Grab a cup of coffee ( or two ) and stay awhile enjoy some beautiful favorites from recent weddings, engagement sessions and more. i’m so glad you’re here , meet breanne, welcome to the brp journal.

Laura and John’s amazing Detroit Yacht Club wedding was absolutely one for the books!! Laura and John are both sailors and they met on a sailboat! Their entire story is like a fairytale. It was only fitting that their special celebration took place at the Detroit Yacht Club! Their love of the water, adventure, and sailing fit so perfectly for their day! Every part of their wedding was thoughtfully planned. Laura is one of the most thoughtful and kindest people I have ever met. It was so important to her that everyone in attendance had the best time at their wedding. When Laura described her wedding to me, she told me that they viewed their wedding as a big celebration for everyone who has significantly shaped their lives and made them the people they are today. They wanted to throw a big party to say thank you! I thought that was so beautiful!

Laura incorporated so many special and thoughtful details into their day. She wore her mother’s veil, the shoes she wore when she took dance lessons with John, and even brought an heirloom bible and old photos of the strong women in her family. They planned special desserts for guests, childcare for their friends with young babies, and even included a cappuccino bar that made lattes with the Claddagh on top! Laura also honored her Irish heritage with the Claddagh ring she wore. The symbol represents love, loyalty, and friendship – three traits that are evident in both Laura, John, and their relationship.

On our way into Downtown Detroit for photos, Laura was beaming from ear to ear and she told me so genuinely that the only thing that mattered all day long was that she and John were now officially husband and wife. They were married! Laura and John were so overjoyed to be married and their family and friends were just as equally excited. Their wedding party was so much fun and all of the speeches their friends and family gave were so heartfelt. You could feel the love for these two all day long. I absolutely love all of the photos we captured throughout their day, but my absolute favorites were the sunset photos we snuck out for at the Detroit Yacht Club after dinner. I still can’t get over these images!! Wait until you see them!

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Gallien! I am still so honored you chose me to capture your incredible Detroit Yacht Club wedding celebration and I hope you cherish these photos for many years to come!

Detroit Yacht Club Wedding | Kelsey & Nick | Sarah Kossuch Photography

This Detroit Yacht Club Belle Isle spring wedding was absolutely spectacular in the most perfect way. When I think back to that gorgeous day in May, I cannot help but be so thankful for the wonderful people, lucky weather, and stunning couple! Kelsey and Nick are truly one of a kind and the love shared between them melts my heart!

The day started out with the threat of rain and this (very) pregnant momma was determined to rock it out, rain or shine! The rain held off and the sun came shining through at just the right moments! I started documenting the day at Kelsey’s home in Northville . Her details were beautiful, but what was more spectacular was the authentic moments captured in the home with her family and bridesmaids.

While I was lost in wedding bliss with Kelsey, our very own executive photographer, Nicole, was photographing Nick and the guys at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center . The Ren Cen is always a fun location to photograph in downtown Detroit. It has a central location and is right next to the Riverfront which always allows for some awesome photographs!

Following the precious moments in the morning, we all headed to the ceremony at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Farmington. The ceremony was filled with rich tradition and meaning. They even received a special, surprise gift. The priest gave Kelsey and Nick rosaries that were blessed by the Pope. They received them with great gratitude and joy! How special!?

After the ceremony, we were off to Belle Isle ! The raindrops started to fall, but we were determined! Kelsey and Nick and their fabulous bridal party endured all the rain! We took photographs in between rain bursts and umbrellas. It didn’t matter if we were in front of the Belle Isle Conservatory or the fountain. It didn’t matter if we photographed these two in front of the greenhouses or in rain, everything they did looked spectacular!

And not to mention that their reception at the Detroit Yacht Club was phenomenal! Their wedding coordinator, Ashley from Festoons and Flourishes , created a greek masterpiece in the ballroom. The room was decorated from floor to ceiling in beautiful greens and details. Kelsey and Nick were shocked as they entered the room for the first time! And this location was not only special because of its aesthetic appeal, but Kelsey’s parents were married at the same ceremony and reception location EXACTLY 30 years prior. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with Kelsey and Nick!

The evening continued with lots of delicious food and tons of fun on the dance floor! And as the clouds rolled in and the sun was setting fast, Nicole took Kelsey and Nick onto the dock for some beautiful sunset photographs overlooking the Detroit River. Then it was back to the party! Nicole documented family and friends getting crazy on the dance floor! The night couldn’t have ended any better!

Kelsey and Nick kicked off our 2017 season! And it was a great start to many more fabulous weddings!

Detroit Yacht Club Wedding

Sunday, may 14th, 2023.

When Beth emailed me about shooting her Detroit Yacht Club wedding, I knew we had to work together. Between her kind personality and the way she described her then-fiance Toby, I knew it would be a beautiful wedding that was centered on the love they shared for each other. When their day came, my intuition proved to be right. Both Toby and Beth were a little nervous leading up to the ceremony, but once they saw each other, all was right in the world. It was heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces and the details of the day just drift away as soon as they were in each other’s presence. Nothing else mattered except each other and the future they had planned. To be in that moment with them was truly an honor.

Beth and Toby started their day getting ready at the Foundation Hotel in downtown Detroit. Toby and his groomsmen were up first. Coming in from England, Toby’s dad didn’t want to miss any of the fun and joined us for the morning festivities, including some Carlsberg and football.

Once Toby and his groomsmen were done, we stopped by Beth’s room. Judging by the laughter we could hear walking down the hallway, we knew we were in for a good time. While Beth and her girls were putting on their finishing touches, we photographed her details.

After Beth was ready, we headed to the Detroit Yacht Club. Since we had some time before the ceremony, I wanted to capture a few portraits of just Beth in the beautiful space.

While we photographed Beth and her bridesmaids, Toby was waiting patiently in a different area of the Detroit Yacht Club.

As guests began to filter in a cellist welcomed guests to the ceremony. It was a fitting touch as Beth plays violin in the Detroit Opera House .

One of my favorite parts of Beth and Toby’s Detroit Yacht Club wedding ceremony was the variety of emotions on display. Everything from laughter to tears was on display.

As guests enjoyed cocktail hour, Beth and Toby took a few family formals in front of the beautiful fireplace before sneaking away for some pictures of just the newlyweds.

I mentioned earlier that both Beth and Toby were fully at ease in each other’s presence. I think Beth’s smile says it all.

GRACE + MATT | Detroit Yacht Club Wedding

Southeast Michigan wedding photography in Birminham at Holy Name Catholic Church and the Detroit Yacht Club provided by Kellie Saunders and Dionne Haglund, two favorite Detroit Michigan wedding photographers. Day of planning and coordination by Kate from Purple Clover Events.

Grace + Matt + Teddy = The cutest family EVER! I'm a little partial to cute dogs. Okay, I'm partial to all dogs, but darn it Teddy is probably the cutest dog I've ever met. PLEASE do not tell my two doggies at home that I said this. I realize this blog post is about Grace and Matt's wedding, not Teddy, but if I don't at least give him an honorable mention I would never forgive myself!

Okay back to the blog post at hand. It was a gorgeous summer afternoon, a wee bit hot since we were in the middle of a heat wave, but still lovely nonetheless. Grace and the girls prepped for the nuptials at a salon and met me back at her parents house in Troy. After a quick lunch she dressed and the crew was on their way to Holy Name Catholic Church in Birmingham for an afternoon ceremony. Matt met my sidekick Dionne at Holy Name a bit earlier for some portraits with the guys, and soon both Grace and Matt were face to face down Holy Name's aisle. It never fails - I think I cry at every ceremony and this one was no exception. I am truly excited and get a bit emotionally overwhelmed when my couples exchange their vows. It is so special for me to have the honor of witnessing my couples at this moment, and I can genuinely feel the presence of God every single time a couple say's I do. Matt and Grace's parents were exceptionally special and without a doubt, everyone in attendance could feel their love for God and for their children. It was pretty powerful and their parents are pretty darn special.

After the ceremony we hit the road and headed over to Belle Isle where the reception was to be held at the Detroit Yacht Club. Grace and Matt are members of the club and lovers of everything Detroit! If anyone has knowledge of the club you will know that they do not have air conditioning in the ballroom. It's common knowledge among my wedding photographer friends that when we have a summer wedding at the Detroit Yacht Club, you have to pack ice packs, Gatorade, a gallon of water, and one of those neck fans you buy at an amusement park. It might look silly, but that neck fan does help. Guess what this wedding photographer did NOT have to pack on Grace and Matt's wedding day? NONE of this! Why??? Because Grace's dad (God bless him!!!) put in air conditioning for the night! Yes, if you are reading this post and considering the Detroit Yacht Club for your wedding, Grace's dad has raised the bar for every wedding I will ever shoot at the club. It was amazing and he kept his friends, family and of course Grace and Matt cool that night. It was a good thing too, because temps have been close to 100 around here lately.

Guests noshed on a marvelous fruit and cheese spread while we stole a few moments on Belle Isle for bridal party photographs. We headed over to the club for the reception and Grace and Matt were welcomed with a grand entrance and toasts and congratulations from friends and family. There was so much fun, laughter and love that night! To Grace and Matt - thanks so much for sharing your wedding day with me! It was an honor!

Some fun facts about Matt and Grace. They met in 2010 at college - Yay for Notre Dame! They started out as friends, but you know how that goes. Matt proposed Christmas Eve, 2014. Matt's proposed in his childhood bedroom. Teddy is their first child, but one day they hope to add a human child to the mix.

The Detroit Yacht Club is a private yacht club on an island in the Detroit River, between the MacArthur Bridge and DTE's generating plant. Its clubhouse is a restored 1920s Mediterranean-style villa and is the largest yacht club in the country . It was founded in 1907, but was only recently incorporated in 2006.

The club was organized shortly after the Civil War and now occupies a beautifully restored 1920s Mediterranean villa. The Detroit Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States and houses some of the world's most beautiful boats. In the 1920s, the club brought world-class attention to Detroit thanks to its sailing team, Gar Wood. The club was also the home of several Gold Cup victories, but some of its services were suspended during the Great Depression.

After years of declining popularity, the Detroit Yacht Club began to see a decline in its membership. However, in 2012, the Detroit Yacht Club Foundation was created to support its restoration and preservation. The DYC still has members, but the usage of the facilities has shifted from recreational purposes to historical education. Its current commodore, Dr. A.J. Telmos, is a member of the foundation.

The Detroit Yacht Club was formed in Owen Park in 1868. It is home to the largest yacht club house in North America, designed by renowned architect George D. Mason. It is a national historic landmark and is now administered by the Michigan State Historic Preservations Office, which was created in the late 1960s. It also provides technical assistance to local communities. The Detroit Yacht Club's history is rich in events and architecture.

Its clubhouse is a 1920s Mediterranean-style villa that has been restored. Despite its modest size, it is one of the largest yacht clubs in the country. Members and guests enjoy the onsite restaurant, private lounge, and other services, as well as the use of the club's boat docks.

The Detroit Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in North America and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This listing is meant to preserve historical properties. The Detroit Yacht Club is now officially on the National Register, a program of the National Park Service. The listing will go into effect on or near March 1, 2011.

In addition to banquet facilities, the Detroit Yacht Club offers a variety of additional services to make planning a wedding an easy and stress-free experience. In addition to its wedding planners , the Detroit Yacht Club can arrange for bar and catering services. The club also provides a variety of menu options, wine toasts, and hors d'oeuvres, as well as valet service. Other services include room setup, cake cutting, and a wedding planner.

Kelly & Seth’s photographs at St Joseph Shrine Detroit Wedding & Detroit Yacht Club Wedding Reception on Belle Isle

St. Joseph Shrine Detroit MI wedding

In the beginning at this St Joseph Catholic Detroit wedding…

Kelly & Seth’s St. Joseph Detroit wedding was so much fun!   The list of wonderful things that day were numerous–a stunning church (The Historic, German Gothic Detroit), the beautiful Detroit Yacht Club , Kelly’s gorgeous wedding gown, the very pretty cake, the music, and don’t forget the “blue tongue”!

Kelly and Seth are both trained actors and had no trouble in front of the camera.  We wish all the best, it was a fantastic day!  Thank you for the opportunity to be part of it.  Break a leg!

We can’t wait for our next St Joseph Catholic Church wedding!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Brides and grooms…by the time your wedding day comes, you’ve done everything you can do to prepare for the day. Stressing about the details does no good at this point and you want to remember every second of this huge day in the happiest way possible. Kelley and Lindsay are beautiful souls who let the day sweep them away in fun, love, and happiness and it was a joy to document. Huge congrats Kelley and Lindsay!!

And always special thanks to my good  friend and second shooter, Laura Finley 🙂

Hey! I'm Erin from Detroit. I'm so grateful you're here!

detroit yacht club wedding

Two things I was reminded of on Allison + Joe’s  Detroit wedding day were: End of September can still be mid 90 degrees (!) and I LOVE Chaldean weddings.  Like LOOOOOOOOVE.   Their Grand Entrance was so full of love and celebration – it’s something and a feeling I will never forget.

We met them at The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center downtown while they were getting ready and there was this amazing excited, nervous energy.  Surrounded by their favorite people, they headed to The Most Blessed Sacrament for their ceremony.  And such a perfect ceremony it was!

Guys, it was hot.  Like sweat in your eyes HOT.  You know this girl doesn’t care, but A + J were troopers as I asked them to touch foreheads.  We headed down the docks at The Detroit Yacht Club to catch some air and give them some time to really take it all in.  It was definitely the calm before the celebration waiting for them inside!  Everyone laughed, loved and danced the night away.  It was so good, I didn’t even want to leave!  Allison + Joe, thank you so much for letting me tell your story and witness your deep love.  I still smile as I type this up thinking of how perfect your day was!  xo, e

Allison, Nurse

Joe, Engineer

Three words that describe their wedding:

Love, party, and HOT!

Allison’s favorite memory of the day:

Walking down the aisle with my dad to meet my groom. Seeing Joe at the end of the aisle eased my nerves. It was so surreal to see all of our favorite people in one room!

Joe’s favorite memory of the day:

Dancing into the venue for the first time as husband and wife, surrounded by our family and friends.

Wedding planning advice for newly engaged couples:

Hire a wedding planner/coordinator (shout out to Jen House/A Moment in Time) to keep you on track during the process and to make the day go smoothly! Take time throughout the day to sit back and truly be present, the day goes by SO fast!

Detroit Yacht Club Wedding Venue at Sunset

Detroit Yacht Club

Detroit Yacht Club, 1 Riverbank Dr, Detroit, MI 48207

The Detroit Yacht Club is a wonderful venue to host your wedding in Detroit. Not only is it another historical venue found within Detroit, but it is also located along the Detroit River, giving it a very picturesque appeal to local and out of town brides.

They have several different intimate event rooms, along with a Grand Ballroom for your wedding to use. This historical location was designed by George Mason in 1922 on Belle Isle, and the club itself was founded in 1868. You won’t find a lacking of beauty here for your wedding day.

We’ve compiled some more information along with weddings we have photographed there, on our Detroit Yacht Club Weddings page!

Situated on 17 acres, this historic location was constructed in 1903 and features multitudes of locations to use for spectacular scenes in your wedding day portraits.

This venue offers options for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies, as well as access to their classic car garage for some truly unique talking points with your guests. Historic Fort Wayne Detroit Wedding Venue - Historic Barracks

Historic Fort Wayne

Historic Fort Wayne, 6325 W. Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI 48209

If you are a history buff, or simply like old-school military charm, then you should check out the Historic Fort Wayne. This beautiful fort, constructed between 1842 and 1851, sits half a mile from the Canadian shoreline of the Detroit River, and is in the Delray neighborhood of Detroit proper.

This venue offers two different locations for weddings to take place; one indoor location, and one outdoor location. The beautifully restored limestone (and brick) barracks are the perfect backdrop for an outdoor wedding ceremony at this historic location. We simply love the history and beauty of this old fort, and how close it is to Downtown Detroit.

Gem Theater Detroit Wedding Venue
