Mission Bay Fireworks are Back After 10 Years!

The Mission Bay fireworks show put on by the Mission Bay Yacht Club to celebrate July 4th was an annual tradition that started in 1982, and it went dark in 2012 due to lack of funding. After a 10-year absence, the July holiday fireworks show is back on Mission Bay entirely due to the overwhelming support of the local San Diego community. The Mission Bay Yacht Club was able to raise more than $45,000 of the $60,000 fireworks show cost through a GoFundMe page, which enabled local residents and local businesses to raise money for the show.

You Can Make The Mission Bay Fireworks Show Even Bigger!

The GoFundMe page continues to accept donations up to the event date—the more money raised, the bigger and better the fireworks show will be!

Big Bay Boom

As the birthplace of naval aviation, San Diego knows better than most cities how to put on patriotic sky show, with fireworks — and even drone spectacles — scheduled across the region on July 4.

Here is Times of San Diego’s complete guide to fireworks displays, from Imperial Beach to Oceanside, and from Del Mar to Ramona, to celebrate Independence Day 2023.

Most are free to the public, but you may have to pay for parking, get there very early or take public transit.

Note that two of the events, over Mission Bay and in Oceanside, are a day early on Monday, July 3.

Big Bay Boom

The Port of San Diego’s Independence Day tradition is the largest fireworks show in California and can be seen all around the bay beginning at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and lasting 20 minutes.

Fireworks will be discharged simultaneously from four barges located off Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the North Embarcadero, and the South Embarcadero.

Fireworks barge locations

The most popular areas to watch from are Shelter Island, Spanish Landing Park, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero, Seaport Village, and The Headquarters at Seaport District.

Attendees are encouraged to follow parking guidelines , use public transportation if possible, arrive early, bring a lawn chair and blanket, and tune a radio to the musical simulcast on KGB 101.5 FM.

Those who can’t make it to the show can watch it on Fox 5 San Diego, KTLA 5 Los Angeles, or Fox 40 Sacramento.

“The Port of San Diego is proud to sponsor the Big Bay Boom and invites San Diegans and visitors to enjoy this incredible celebration,” said Port Chairman Rafael Castellanos. “The Big Bay Boom is one of the port’s iconic holiday events and is a significant economic stimulus for local businesses.”

Chula Vista

The South Bay city’s annual fireworks display begins at 9 p.m. at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. Magic 92.5 will broadcast accompanying patriotic music. Gates open at 7 p.m. for the free event. Bring you blankets and lawn chairs, but alcohol tents, grills and umbrellas are prohibited. There will be food tucks on site. Additional parking is available at New Hope Community Church and Mountain Hawk Park.

The Big Bay Boom can be seen from many areas of Coronado, but the city’s own fireworks will explode over Glorietta Bay near Stingray Point starting at 9 p.m. The Coronado Golf Course is a good vantage point. While you’re watching, tune in the sound track on KYXY 96.5 FM. The fireworks cap a full day of patriotic events in the Crown City.

Del Mar Fairgrounds

If you’re going to the San Diego County Fair on July 4, stay until 9 p.m. to see the fireworks spectacular. For an additional $20, you can reserve a seat in the Corona Grandstand Stage for a ringside view.

The City of El Cajon will host July 4th fireworks at 9 p.m. over John F. Kennedy Park.  The show follows an afternoon of free activities, including train rides, arts and crafts, family games and live bands.

This city’s annual July 4th fireworks show begins at 9 p.m. over Grape Day Park and can be viewed from anywhere in the downtown area. Prior to the show, beginning at 5 p.m., the California Center for the Arts will host a free celebration with live music, activities for children and food to purchase.

Imperial Beach

Fireworks go off from the iconic Imperial Beach Pier at 9 p.m. The best viewing is on the beach from Imperial Beach Boulevard to Palm Avenue. Pick up dinner from local merchants, spread a blanket on the beach and enjoy the show.

Lake Murray

The Lake Murray Music Fest and Fireworks is a day of food, fun, bands and fireworks celebrating Independence Day. The music begins at 11 a.m. at Lake Murray Community Park in San Carlos. The fireworks go off at 9 p.m. and can be seen throughout the Navajo community, from La Mesa to Del Cerro and beyond. The event is free, but donations are encouraged .

La Jolla Shores

It’s not a fireworks display, but safer and possibly more spectacular. The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is hosting a show performed by a fleet of 100 choreographed drones beginning at 8:45 p.m. on July 4. The best viewing area will be the south end of Kellogg Park. The drones are under the control of San Diego-based  Drone Studios . Fans of the eco-friendly event are encouraged to make a donation to the nonprofit LJ STEAM Foundation .

Mission Bay

Early fireworks over Mission Bay are back for the second year in a row, with a show over Sail Bay beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, July 3. Organizers say the best views will be from Sunset Point Park, Santa Clara Point to Fanuel Street Park, along Rivera Drive and other shoreline areas with a view of Sail Bay. The show is sponsored by the Mission Bay Yacht Club and local businesses.

Ocean Beach

A pet-friendly July 4 light show beginning at 9:05 p.m. will feature a fleet of 300 drones, meticulously choreographed to create stunning formations and patterns in the night sky. The drones will launch over Ocean Beach Elementary School, but the spectacle can be seen throughout Ocean Beach and Point Loma. You can listen to an accompanying sound track online . The show by the community organization LUMINOSITY replaces fireworks that can no longer be launched from the storm-damaged Ocean Beach Pier.

Oceanside always celebrates Independence Day on July 3, since that’s the date of its incorporation, and this year it’s the city’s 135th anniversary. The celebration begins at 5 p.m. at the SoCal Soccer Complex at El Corazon with live entertainment, a family fun zone and food vendors. The fireworks go off at 9 p.m. Parking is $12 at the SoCal lot, but free at the adjacent Ocean Ranch Business Park

Fireworks go off at 9 p.m. at two locations on July 4 in Poway, the Poway High School Stadium and Poway Sportsplex. Gates at the high school open at 6 p.m. for games, activities, and a DJ spinning tunes. No registration is required, but there’s a $5 charge at the gate. You can also see the high school show from Lake Poway.

Ramona’s Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club are sponsoring a family picnic and fireworks at Olive Pierce Middle School on July 4. The grounds open at 4 p.m. followed by fireworks at 9 p.m.

Rancho Bernardo

This San Diego neighborhood’s fireworks begin at 9 p.m. on July 4 at Rancho Bernardo High School after a full day of celebration at Webb Park. The Spirit of the Fourth event includes music, a parade, crafts, food trucks and more.

The Red, White and BOOM! fireworks show starts at 9 p.m. at Bradley Park. The free pre-show begins at 5 p.m. with 80s cover band BetaMAXX, carnival games, jumpers and food sales. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs.

The annual Santee Salutes celebration begins at 2 p.m. at Town Center Community Park East. Enjoy live music, sample the food vendors and watch the fireworks that begin just after 9 p.m. on July 4. Preferred parking is available for purchase.

Fireworks will fill the sky over Brengle Terrace Park at 9 p.m. The show is free, but you can watch from the Moonlight Amphitheatre for $5 per person. Gates open at 5 p.m. with tickets available at the entrance. Food and drink are available for sale in the amphitheater, along with entertainment by the Cassie B Project at 7:35 p.m.

Mission Bay Firework Show Returns After 10 Years

For nearly 30 years, residents in the area would gather on nearby beaches to watch the fireworks, but in 2012 the show went dark, by amber frias • published july 2, 2022 • updated on july 2, 2022 at 7:16 pm.

After a decade-long hiatus, fireworks will once again light up Mission Bay this Fourth of July weekend.

“I’m excited, said Audrey, a mission bay resident. “My mom had told me how she used to watch them when she was my age and I think it'll just be a full-circle moment.”

“We are so excited,” said Christy Wile, mission bay resident. “She's been talking about the fireworks for weeks now.”

For nearly 30 years, residents in the area would gather on nearby beaches to watch the fireworks, but in 2012 the show went dark.

“It’s one of those things that was a long-time tradition for the Yacht Club to put on the fireworks and we had to stop it because it just got too expensive for our budget,” said Kathy Dryden, Yacht Club rear commodore. “For 10 years it's been a little lonely here on the Fourth of July.”

So this year Dryden made it her mission to bring it back.

“It means a lot because families and friends and everybody comes down and hangs out for the day and waits for the fireworks,” said Dryden.

She says the show costs at least $60,000 to put on. Dryden initially went to the board for help but they only approved $20,000 so she turned to the community for help. She created a GoFundMe page and the response was overwhelming.

“Immediately people that just live in the community just donating which was really heartwarming,” said Dryden.

Not only did residents come forward, but so did hotels and nearby businesses.

“As soon as I saw Kathy posted about the fundraiser we shared it with everyone we knew,” said Wile.

The GoFundMe page raised over $48,000. With the necessary funds, the show was back on, giving San Diego residents one more reason to celebrate this holiday weekend.

The Mission Bay show will be held Sunday, July 3rd, at 9 p.m. Organizers say they wanted to make sure the community was able to attend multiple shows this weekend.

San Diego Yacht Club

The Mission of the San Diego Yacht Club is to encourage and foster interest in all aspects of yachting. Tucked away in beautiful Point Loma, the San Diego Yacht Club is consistently ranked among the top 5 yacht clubs in the Nation and is recognized by the Club Leadership Forum as one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world.

Stories from San Diego Yacht Club

In 1886, a group of local boating enthusiasts joined together to found what has become a cornerstone yacht club in the annals of American yachting. San Diego Yacht Club’s facilities had humble beginnings in several locations, including an old ferry boat. SDYC has been at its present location on Point Loma since 1924. Its facilities operate year-round and include 576 boat slips, dry storage for 161 boats, tennis courts, a swimming pool, picnic areas, a full-service dining room, bar, banquet facilities, snack bar (summer only), gift shop, and an internationally renowned year-round Junior Program. SDYC members are dedicated to the principles and traditions of Corinthian yachting.

San Diego Yacht Club won the America’s Cup in 1987, 1988, and 1992, hosting the event in 1988, 1992, and 1995. In 1987 and 1988, Dennis Conner won the America’s Cup on behalf of SDYC. The competition was won a third time by SDYC in 1992, by Bill Koch on the yacht America .  In addition to America’s Cup, ten SDYC members have won the Star World Championships. San Diego Yacht Club has also had 13 members sail for their country in the Olympics earning 10 Olympic medals between them.

India’s “King of Good Times” Sells Bay Area Home for $14.4M

A photo illustration of embattled Indian liquor magnate Vijay Mallya along with 6 Bulkley Avenue in Sausalito (Getty, 6 Bulkley Avenue)

Embattled Indian liquor magnate Vijay Mallya has sold his panoramic Sausalito home for $14.4 million, just inching past a $14 million trade in Ross to become the most expensive sale in Marin County so far this year.

When the 11,000-square-foot home at 6 Bulkley Avenue first came to market in 2021, it was listed at $22.5 million. That price dropped to $20 million the following summer . It was most recently listed at $16.85 million, according to a marketing site from Mill Valley-based Coldwell Banker agent Farnoosh Hariri.

Hariri confirmed that she was still the listing agent on the home, which has been in and out of foreclosure since 2019, when it sold. Hariri declined to comment on the sale.

Mallya purchased what was then a shell home for $1.2 million in 1994, according to a San Francisco Chronicle profile in 2003. Its previous owner had defaulted on the property.

The former chairman of United Spirits, known for its Kingfisher beer brand, Mallya spent many times the sales price finishing the house and filling it with art by Picasso, Renoir and a gold Steinway piano, according to the Chronicle. It also said he owned 26 homes around the world at that time, plus 260 classic cars, and several jets and yachts, including the famed Kalizma, once owned by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Mallya, once the face of Kingfisher and known as the “King of Good Times” in India, has sold off the Kalizma as well as many of his homes and other assets over the last few years as his bet on starting Kingfisher Airlines in 2005 failed to pay off. In 2016, he had to flee India to avoid arrest on money laundering and fraud charges, with more than $1 billion owed to more than a dozen banks.

The country is still seeking his extradition from England, where he hosted a lavish week-long wedding celebration for his son Sidhartha on his $14 million estate in Hertfordshire this summer, according to the Economic Times.

Sign Up for the undefined Newsletter

Back in Sausalito, Mallya’s $5 million loan from 2015 first became distressed in 2019 and was in and out of foreclosure throughout the pandemic. A notice of trustee’s sale was filed on an unpaid balance of about $5.3 million in March 2023 on behalf of lender Wilmington Trust, and a public auction set for May that year. It appears not to have sold at auction at that point, and another notice of default was sent to Mallya that summer.

Records from the Aug. 20 close show Mallya’s daughter Leana as the seller of the property, though a substitution of trustee filing from earlier that month still put Wilmington Trust as the beneficiary.

The buyer was Puna LLC based in Colorado. Its mailing address from Colorado state records matches the San Diego address of Wenthur Law Group, a law and tax firm which specializes in yacht, jet and vintage automobile purchasing, according to a feature on senior partner Cris Wenthur by the International Superyacht Society.

Wenthur speaks internationally at superyacht events around the world, according to the story, and has worked for the America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race teams, Oracle and other teams as legal counsel over more than 20 years. Wenthur’s name is listed on the state LLC filing but it is unclear if he bought the home for himself or on behalf of a client.

The hillside home has panoramic views of the bay, Alcatraz, Angel Island and the San Francisco skyline, and while it is less than half a mile to the Sausalito Yacht Club, it does not have its own dock.

Marin’s biggest sale last year was a $23 million dock home in Belvedere, and its second-biggest was a $17.5 million trade for a property on Bolinas Bay in Stinson Beach.

Though 6 Bulkley lacks direct water access, there is a swimming pool, spa, sauna and steam shower on the view terrace, on the lowest of the four-level elevator home. Ornate interior details in the seven-bedroom, 12-bath house include inlaid Italian marble floors, gilded columns and mosaic bathroom tiling. It has a three-car garage and room for three more behind its gated entry.

Great Racing and Sportsmanship Shine Under Clear Skies at the 7th Annual San Diego OCR

The 7th annual San Diego Olympic Classes Regatta (OCR) rolled out on a perfect June weekend. The classic San Diego "June Gloom" burned off quickly and a nice westerly filled in for the majority of both days. With winds ranging from 7-14 kts, and modest little swells running down the course, 28 sailors in three classes completed seven races on a trapezoid course located just south of Point Loma on the Coronado Roads.

Light Winds, with Heavy Competition

What's Yachting Cup without on the water fierce competition, tasteful strategy, and a hint of chaos? The outside courses on the Coronado Roads gave way to quite the interesting turn of events for some. Though the course was square with light and shifty winds, there was still plenty of energy in the air to create that chaos.
