This Yacht Can Walk on Water

One of the coolest hydrofoil concepts should become reality in 2018, with the launch of the 40 Open Sunreef Power. The Polish builder, known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporated four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.

[Sunreef][] is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open ­day-boat category with creative designs. ­Beyond its hydrofoils, the boat’s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

With inboard power, the 40 Open should make about 50 knots, according to the builder. With quad 400 hp Mercury Racing outboards, the boat is designed to soar past 60 knots. Sans foils, the planing-hulled catamaran has a reported top-end of 35 knots.

If the hydrofoils live up to their promise, the 40 Open could be the latest wunderkind in the luxury day-boat category.

Finessing the Foils

The 40 Open’s hydrofoils raise and lower hydraulically, allowing the captain independent operation of the 3-foot-6-inch-long forward foils and 4-foot-9-inch aft foils. “The system lets you set the exact angle of attack to improve the longitudinal balance of the boat for optimum performance,” notes Grzegorz Wladzinski, a Sunreef designer. Placing the foils along the centerline also increases the catamaran’s stability, Wladzinski says.

Unit number one of this catamaran by the Polish yard is already in construction. Sunreef yachts, boatbuilder historically specialized in multihulls, decided to introduce a dynamic day cruiser to their range and to name it Sunreef Yachts 40 Open Sunreef Power (breathe…).

Sunreef Yachts 40 Open Sunreef Power : Vast, Fast and Furious

For once, we decided to keep the press release definition used for the launch of a boat: because those three words (vast, fast and furious) are to us a good synthesis of the features of Sunreef Yachts 40 Open Sunreef Power.

Vast it is indeed, thanks to the double hull construction which provides a beam of over 5 meters . And it sure will be fast, with a maximum power available of 2200 HP for a cruising speed comfortably estimated in 35 knots.

As for the “furious” eponymous, although it may seem a little strong, we reckon it can fit to the Hydrofoil version (available some months after the planing one): Sunreef Yachts 40 Open Sunreef Power H will count on foils to completely get off the water and cruise like an America’s Cup boat, reaching speeds of over 60 knots.

Beside this technical premiere, the main innovation of Sunreef 40 Open Sunreef Power is the choice to apply a multihull design to a day cruiser , which allows for the gain of a massive living space and extreme stability at high speeds . Thus naturally balanced, the 40 Open Sunreef Power doesn’t require stabilizing systems and provides a fast and safe navigation.

Sunreef 40 Open Sunreef Power will be equipped with inboard propulsion ranging from 2×425 HP to 2×1100 HP , while the hydrofoil 40 Open Sunreef Power H has the chance to install even a quadruple outboard solution delivering 4×400 HP. The retractable hydrofoil system implemented lifts the boat above the water when cruising above 25kts. As a result, the 40 Open Sunreef Power H can glide above the waves to reach speeds up to 60kts in foilborne mode. With the drag reduced to a minimum, the boat also benefits from low fuel consumption and long range.

Sunreef Yachts presented the first open foiling catamaran concept in 2014 during the Cannes Yachting Festival. Since that time, company’s engineers and designers have been developing the concept up to this result, where passengers can feel comfortable while experiencing a cruise combining gliding on water and flying through air.

Sunreef 40 Open Sunreef Power offers a high level of onboard comfort : two lateral aft folding platforms enhance the living space of the catamaran, creating a huge space at sea level to better enjoy relax and watersports. Again, the volume below the aft sunpad conceals a huge lazarette to store water toys and diving gear. The helm , fitted with sporty seats, is equipped with a touchscreen to manage all the boat’s systems.

The bow-placed dining area uses the whole beam of the boat, featuring adjustable tables and plenty of seating. Upon customization, this part of the deck can be turned into a comfortable cabin perfect for overnight trips . Large volumes are also available below decks (the plural is perfect in this case…), with the hulls housing a bathroom and an additional bedroom.

As customary with Sunreef, the clients’ needs are relevant in terms of choices: audio-video systems,  technology equipment, upholstery and even the layout are all aspects that can be tailored to owner’s wishes.

Superyachts are a symbol of style, luxury, and sophistication as they take guests on voyages through the seas with all the amenities of a premium hotel. The primary differences between superyachts and other types of vessels are based on their size. It is important to note that a yacht is only ‘super’ if it falls on the farther side of the scale from 24 meters up until 60 meters. 1. Sunreef 100 & 100 Sunreef Power

Despite remaining in the same length range, the Sunreef 100 sailing yacht and the 100 Sunreef Power catamaran each have their unique architecture. While each technology has its advantages, both have been designed for year-long navigation in supreme luxury. The vast alfresco relaxation areas and interiors can both be customized and adapted to match the preferred navigation plan and lifestyle of its owners.

Onboard, the hulls, mast, bimini, and superstructure of the Sunreef 43M are to be embedded with solar panels to limit dependency on fossil fuels. This is a hi-tech, green solar power system engineered in-house by the research and development team of Sunreef Yachts. The system is supported by the industry’s lightest lithium-ion electric boat batteries.

The 4 9M Sunreef Power combines radical naval design with cutting-edge engineering to present a luxurious three-deck concept established over a 17-meter beam. Powered by twin 3400HP engines and aided further with a low resistance twin-hull design, this 49M Sunreef Power allows for a range of over 5000 nautical miles. Apart from the classic, this superyacht also has an alternate version embedded with inhouse engineered solar panels for a more environmentally friendly impact.
