Is the 40-50m size range the ideal superyacht length?

In a sea of choices in the superyacht market, superyacht brokerage firm Camper & Nicholsons has noticed rising popularity in the 40- to 50-metre size range amongst prospective buyers. BOAT International spoke to Benjamin Bensahel, head of sales at Camper & Nicholsons, to explore what is driving this increasing demand and some of the compelling advantages of owning a yacht in this size bracket.

Simplified ownership

Yachts in this size range are typically below 500GT, which comes with a wealth of advantages that enhance the yachting experience for owners and crew. This includes more flexible crew qualifications, where RYA certifications can be used, providing owners access to a broader range of skilled crew options. Additionally, these yachts require fewer certificates to maintain, typically seven, as opposed to 13 for yachts exceeding 500GT. This reduction in administrative burden allows the captain and crew to dedicate more time to serving guests and managing crew affairs. Beyond administrative benefits, these yachts boast lower fuel consumption, crew costs and berthing fees. All this makes this yacht category an ideal choice for owners seeking commercial use.

Charter opportunities

For owners considering commercial use, this size bracket is a magnet for charterers and a cost-effective option for owners. Bensahel highlights: "Among our fleet, this size bracket consistently attracts the highest number of charter requests. And for the charter price in this size range, the owner can truly offset their operational costs."

More for your money

While the firm has witnessed a notable surge in demand for this category, Bensahel suggests that the reasoning behind this trend may be due to the current price in the market, with yachts in this size bracket "typically ranging from €10-15 million, and €25-30 million for the newer models". Bensahel goes on to explain that this size range certainly does not compromise onboard amenities: "You're not going to have the space you have on a 60-metre, but you still can manage to have all the main features, including a beach club, gym, full-beam master suite on the main deck and a spacious saloon."

Greater marina accessibility

Larger superyachts often face limitations when it comes to docking in marinas. "If you want to slip into Saint-Tropez, for example, and be right in front of the big restaurants, you need to be below 50 metres," Bensahel explains. "So, there's an assurance of owning a yacht in this size bracket that you can fit in most ports in the Mediterranean and in the Caribbean."

Enhanced onboard service

With smaller crew requirements, Bensahel notes, "Having a large number of crew on board makes the boat feel a bit like a corporation. When the yacht is below 50 metres, there are generally fewer crew members, which makes the service on board feel a little more relaxed and personal."

Anchoring flexibility on the French Riviera

A buyer’s guide to the 50m-plus sailing yacht segment

This most niche of sectors continues to be a challenging landscape for both buyers and builders….

In recent years, the custom sailing yacht market has experienced a decline in fortunes and, as a result, has created challenging market conditions for many of the world’s most prolific large sailing yacht builders. When buying in this sector, therefore, it is imperative to do a thorough evaluation of shipyard activity and financial stability in order to ensure that any project is likely to reach fruition on time and on budget, while ensuring that the shipyard will still be operational by the end of the project. While it is a challenging landscape, this uniquely passionate and desirable segment of the market is served by an equally unique and passionate pocket of specialist sailing yacht builders.

By way of example, over the last 20 years, the most prolific 50m-plus sailing yacht builder is Perini Navi , which has delivered an impressive 22 projects during this period. Nevertheless, in recent years it has become clear that Perini Navi has been in financial difficulty as its majority owner, the Tabacchi family, became increasingly discontented with the business’ diminished returns. (In September 2020, it was announced that Perini Navi had secured new investment from Blue Skye Investment group.)

It is hard to provide concrete buying advice in this sector, given that Perini Navi has been the most prolific 50m-plus sailing yacht builder over the past 10 years, yet has still faced challenges. There is, however, an elite tier of builders within this most niche of sectors that continues to represent both quality and consistency, including Baltic Yachts and Royal Huisman .

Oceanco features as one of the top 50m-plus sailing yacht manufacturers in terms of cumulative tonnage and meterage, having delivered two projects over the past 10 years. These projects stand apart from the other ‘top’ yards in so far as they are 85.9m and 106.8m respectively. And the world’s largest ever sailing yacht, S/Y A , (142.81m) was built by Nobiskrug . Indeed, in the past five years, three of the five sailing yacht projects over 70m have been constructed by shipyards that are better known for motoryacht builds. It is worth noting that, while outside the parameters of our data, Royal Huisman also delivered 81m Sea Eagle II this year (pictured above).

What is perhaps encouraging for the 50m-plus sailing yacht market is that the scarcity of builds has created a healthy demand ‘new and nearly new’ 50m-plus sailing yachts on the secondhand brokerage market. While the demand for new build sailing yachts has fallen, and demand for motoryachts now dwarfs it, sailing remains an in-demand pastime for a passionate group of the world’s ultra-wealthy.

“The NAVIX50 embodies our philosophy of creating vessels that excel in any environment,” Leapher CEO Yiannis Andriotis said in a statement. “From the Drake Passage to the coast of St. Tropez, this yacht redefines what’s possible in the sub-500GT category.”

The spacious interior includes six generous cabins, with the option for a seventh cabin or expanded skylounge. The guest cabin on the main deck can also be turned into a gym, wellness area, or an expanded owner’s suite. All guest cabins are equipped with king-size beds, while the owner’s suite is fitted with a plush super king-size bed. The yacht is also home to six crew cabins that can sleep up to 11.

The exterior decks are replete with alfresco dining areas, lounges, and sunbeds. The aft deck is arguably the standout, with two folding terraces, a large, 18-foot pool, a sprawling sunbathing area, a swim platform, and not one but two wet bars. At the opposite end, the foredeck doubles as a garage for two tenders.

“It [the NAVIX50] offers unparalleled versatility and luxury while maintaining an attractive value proposition for seasoned owners,” added Andriotis.

Leapher operates on a site formerly owned by cruise ship producer De Hoop that closed at the height of the pandemic. The yard is set to deliver the first NAVIX60 later this month. Christened Horizon, the 198-foot explorer will be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show from September 25 to 28.
