New to Yachting

  • Apr 24, 2016

As the Monaco Yacht Show ends each year, soon follows the close of the Mediterranean cruising season with many yachts choosing to make their way across the Atlantic to the US East Coast for the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Show (FLIBS) at the end of October, and on to the Caribbean for the winter cruising season.

When is the Caribbean Yachting Season?

The Caribbean yachting season runs from late November to May, although the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in early December is generally considered to be the official marker of the start of the Caribbean season. The majority of yachts will arrive in the Caribbean in the first few weeks of December, just time for the Christmas charter period, often using Antigua or St Maarten as their base for the season. The majority of yachts will then begin their crossings back to the Mediterranean in March or April to get ready for the summer cruising season, although some yachts may remain in the Caribbean as late as May.

This means that both October and April are a time of great change for the yachting industry. In October, many of the yachts that have been cruising the Mediterranean begin preparing to make the journey to the US East Coast for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) at the end of the month, and on to the beautiful islands of the Caribbean thereafter. This is, therefore, a key time for those seeking a Caribbean yacht job, as their captains typically begin to hire new crew here in the Med before setting sail. You can find opportunities for the Caribbean yachting season and beyond by keeping an eye on our yacht job vacancies page.

Strategies for Finding A Caribbean Yacht Job

If you're a crew member or crew hopeful currently in the Med, September and October are the peak months to find a Caribbean yacht job for the season. What is your strategy? Are you doing your best to find a yacht to cross on, or are you planning to fly across to Fort Lauderdale to find work?

Without question, we believe that is always best for candidates already in the Med to start their job hunt there, as most yachts tend to crew up before setting sail for the US and Caribbean.

For the best chance of finding a yacht to cross with, join a yacht crew agency like ours, and follow their advice for finding work on a yacht . If it is looking like you might not be able to get seasonal employment before the yachts set sail, you might consider looking instead for a yacht delivery job, as this will give you valuable experience, sea time, and save you an airfare!

If you are not at all successful in finding a Caribbean yacht job in the Med, some crew are granted another chance to find work by flying ahead to Florida. It is however worth noting that many yachts based in Fort Lauderdale will be registered in the US (US flagged), so you will be unable to find work onboard unless you already hold a US passport.

How Can YPI CREW Help You Get a Yacht Job this Caribbean Season?

Here at YPI CREW, our super, superyacht recruiters know exactly which yachts are "crossing the pond' for the Caribbean yachting season, and which are looking for crew. So, before you book that plane ticket, make sure you have spoken to us about all the current options available to you to find work, including yacht deliveries. We can also give you the low-down on the yacht qualifications and visas you'll need to work in the Caribbean.

Already in the States or the Caribbean, or planning to fly there? YPI CREW has a global fleet of yachts on its books, so get in touch with us to find out what exciting opportunities we can offer you.

The best times to find work on a superyacht

The best times to find a job in yachting to give you the best chance at scoring work! 1. At an international event such as a boat show

2. When the yachts are in season

3.  When there’s a change over of crew (generally at the start and end of a season)

All of these times are when work is the most prominent with jobs onboard.

So why is there more workaround when there is an international boat show or large luxury event? If a boat is for sale or up for charter it will be participating at the boat show to show off to potential buyers and charter agents.

When a yacht is getting ready for boat shows you can imagine it needs to look amazing! So it’s all hands on deck with often short turnarounds and extra hands needed its a prime opportunity to get some day work and help out onboard where needed.

Popular boats shows and events include the Miami International Boat Show in February ,  The Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix in May, Sanctuary boat show on the gold coast Australia also in May, The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (Otherwise known as FLIBS) held in late October, and the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in December. I suggest doing a search online to find out more if you’re looking for work and an upcoming boat show or event is happening soon in the yachting hubs or close to where you’re based.

Now for the yachting seasons… the most important time to look for work!

Med Season (Mediterannean Season)- April/May – September/Oct The med season generally begins late April/early May when yachts are preparing for summer charters and events like the Cannes Film Festival held in May. In the lead-up to the season, there will often be opportunities for day work and permanent positions as vessels crew up for the season. Caribbean season Late November marks the beginning of the Caribbean season, with the Antigua Charter Yacht Show kicking things off in early December. Popular spots for yachts in the USA/Caribbean include Fort Lauderdale (Main yachting hub), West Palm Beach, Antigua, and St Maarten.

Dual Season Yachts (yachts that do both main yachting seasons)

The majority of dual-season yachts will begin their crossing back to the Med Feb/March to get ready for the summer season in the Mediterranean . Some yachts remain in the Caribbean as late as May. It all depends on the charters booked, owner preferences and schedules.

Yachting Seasons in Australia

The Whitsunday season including Great Barrier Reef charters generally run from April to November. From November to late January/February it is the busy summer season in Sydney.

Finding work at the beginning and end of a season is also prime time to look for work onboard. Yacht crew work all season, some leave some stay, some want a break and some will go and do training, therefore, positions become available.

Don’t leave it too late though when the season is all done – especially if it’s the med season as you could miss your opportunity to jump on a boat that is destined for the Caribbean or the states. The dual-season yachts leave soon after the season wraps up which can be anywhere from September- to October.

Want to know the three best times to find a job in yachting to give you the best chance at scoring work?

Are you wondering how to get a job on a yacht? How to find work as a yacht stew or deckhand?

Check out this episode! Yachting is seasonal, there are boat shows and events when more yacht crew are needed, and there’s a change over of yacht crew at the beginning and end of a season. It’s about timing it right to maximise job opportunities in the yachting industry.

Working on a superyacht - a complete guide.

Patrick Maflin

Working on a superyacht is an exciting prospect if you’re trying to find a job which offers something very different from your typical 9 to 5 grind.

There are numerous roles you may wish to consider on board a superyacht.

What you choose will depend on your personality, interests, skills and background.

In this complete guide to working on a superyacht we hope that you will gain a better understanding of how to best go about getting a job aboard a superyacht, to hopefully embark on the career of your dreams at sea.

What is a Superyacht?

What does working on a superyacht have to offer, what is the work ethic like, chief engineer, second & third engineer, technical officer, first & second officer, chief steward/stewardess, steward/stewardess, how much are yacht crew paid, what skills & experience are required, do i need any qualifications, how do i find a superyacht job, when are the yachting seasons.

A superyacht is the term used to describe any leisure yacht which is over 24 metres in length.

Nowadays the superyacht industry has become a very popular and lucrative one.

Many people are considering taking up a job on board a superyacht, especially since the hit reality TV series Below Deck gained worldwide popularity.

Yacht crew serving guests

Nowadays there are several superyachts sailing the seas, including motor and sail.

Between them, thousands of crew members are employed to ensure the superyacht is kept in top shape and that the owners and any guests on board are served to the highest standards.

Working within the superyacht industry can prove to be a very rewarding and enticing career for the right types of personality.

It’s certainly a different kind of career than most other traditional jobs.

There’s always a great deal going on on board, and travel and adventure will be an integral part of your life.

As most yachts head to the Mediterranean in the summer months, and the Caribbean in the winter, you will get to experience the sunniest places at the best times of the year.

Moreover, yacht crew are very well paid.

Salaries will vary considerably from one yacht to another, depending on its size and type.

It’s important however to bear in mind that working on a superyacht also means having to work long hours.

But the end result can be rewarding, especially if you spent over 183 days at sea.

This essentially means any income earned should qualify for the seafarers earning deduction , which means you pay zero income tax!

A traditional job will often have a set start and end time every day.

You head off home after a long day, and see your family and unwind for the rest of the evening.

This is certainly not the case with a job in the superyacht industry.

At the end of a long day, you will most likely spend the evening having dinner with the rest of the crew.

And you will generally share a cabin with another crew member, so essentially, you live and work in one place around the clock.

It’s therefore important to keep this in mind, along with your openness to this kind of lifestyle.

You need to have the right personality to be able to live in these conditions, and be very personable to get along well with others.

Thus, a friendly and outgoing personality is a must for a crew member.

You would need to also be a grafter with a great work ethic.

What are the Job Roles Aboard a Superyacht?

Yachts Moored in Marina

The Captain is the person responsible for the safe navigation and operation of the yacht.

The Captain will have full responsibility for the crew members, guests, tenders and toys.

Other responsibilities include money management and budgeting, overseeing the upkeep of the yacht, and managing refitting projects.

The role of the captain will vary depending on the size of the vessel.

The smaller the yacht, the more hands-on the captain will be.

Whereas with bigger yachts, the more the captain’s responsibilities become administrative in nature.

However, this job can be very lucrative and Captains tend to be very well paid .

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the engineering department, and for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.

The Chief Engineer will manage engineers, electricians and electronic technical officers, while reporting directly to the Captain.

The Chief Engineer tends to get involved in the daily work revolving around the mechanical and electrical operations of the ship.

They will also ensure that any planned maintenance takes place on time, and that should anything need fixing it is seen to as efficiently as possible.

This is another important role which involves maintaining the mechanical and electrical operations under control.

The second or third engineer will be responsible for small tasks as well as more complex ones, as they will need to see to anything that requires fixing, be it the main engine, an air conditioner or a jet ski.

They will also need to maintain an inventory of important parts required for possible breakages or replacements.

A Technical Officer or Electronic Technical Officer (ETO), as they are sometimes referred to, will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of equipment, including computers, communication equipment, electronic equipment, and audiovisual equipment.

Such equipment will be more advanced and more commonplace the larger the yacht.

The Technical Officer will need to see to the planned maintenance of the various systems.

Practically all superyachts will have a First Officer on board, but bigger vessels will typically employ a Second Officer as well.

The roles of such officers are very similar, and they revolve around the safety of the yacht and the people on board.

Hence their duties will include various safety and administrative tasks, overseeing all deck operations, supervising toys, undertaking bridge watches and keeping charts updated.

The second officer will act as an understudy to the first officer.

The Chief Steward/Stewardess is a high ranking role which involves being responsible for the interior of the yacht, as well as managing the interior staff members.

They will report directly to the Captain.

Some of the tasks that a Chief Steward will need to oversee include cabin preparation, food service, drink service, silver service, flower arranging, organising events and arranging trips.

It’s a very varied and demanding role, but a yacht stewardess earns a good salary .

This is one of the most common entry level jobs in the yacht industry.

The primary role of a steward or stewardess is to ensure that the interior of the yacht is as clean and organised as possible.

This includes cabin preparation and cleaning, maintaining drinks stock, drink preparation and serving, laundry, ironing, plant care and flower arranging, among others.

The Chef will be responsible for everything relating to food - from the purchase of food items and its transportation to the yacht, to its preparation and presentation to the guests on the table.

The chef will also be responsible for the galley, including its organisation and clean-up.

The chef will need to be creative and inventive, to ensure varied and balanced menus.

Only experienced chefs tend to work aboard superyachts, with an impressive CV of having worked in commercial kitchens for several years prior.

So it’s understandable that a yacht chef makes a very good income .

On larger yachts there will also be a sous chef or second chef alongside the head chef.

They will be responsible for culinary duties as well as assisting the chef in various ways.

The sous chef will typically take care of the cooking for the crew members along with any side work required for meal preparations for the yacht owner and their guests.

The Bosun, or as sometimes referred to, the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand will be responsible for maintaining the yacht’s exterior in tip top shape.

They will also be in charge of all the deckhands.

The Bosun’s role includes organising deck operations such as the maintenance of toys and tenders as well as their proper storage, deck maintenance and storage of any supplies required for deck operations.

The Bosun may also undertake bridge watch duties at sea as well as be the main tender driver.

The Deckhand position comprises numerous roles which revolve around cleaning and maintenance.

The deckhands will be responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht in good condition, and this will include tasks such as painting, polishing, varnishing, sanding, finishing and carpentry jobs too.

Deckhands will also drive tenders and toys.

A deckhand will often need to escort guests who will be using toys.

At times deckhands will also help out interior staff in cleaning cabins, serve meals or to provide assistance in the galley.

Whilst this is considered a low level position aboard yachts, many deckhands gain certification before embarking on a yachting career to ensure they are fully skilled to do the job.

Competition for yacht deckhand roles is fierce, so before applying for a deckhand job , it’s best to be prepared first.

The salaries of the various yacht crew members vary from one yacht to another, depending on the type of yacht, and its size.

However, to give you an idea, the average superyacht salary for an entry level job, such as a steward or a deckhand, will typically range between £1,700 to £3,000 per month.

There’s also the addition of tips to consider.

Sometimes during charter season you can earn a substantial amount from tips, which could even end up doubling your salary.

Another thing to consider is that if you are a UK resident, you would benefit from a tax-free salary if you pass your residency test .

You also need to bear in mind that your day-to-day costs would be taken care of if you work on a yacht, as you would also be living on it.

Hence you will not have to pay for water or electricity bills, rent or meals.

Doctor signing ENG1 Medical

As with any job, the more experience and relevant skills you have, the better.

For example, gaining an ENG1 Medical Certificate and the STCW Basic Safety Training certificate are a must.

You may need to also beef up your CV by demonstrating that you have various other skills or training which will come in useful.

You should try dockwalking to get some experience on board a yacht, even if for just a short period of time.

This will help to show that you are willing to work and learn, while also giving you some experience to include in your CV.

You will need to get an ENG1 medical to certify that you are fit to work at sea.

The STCW Basic Safety Training is a mandatory qualification for a seafarer.

There are numerous other courses which you may opt to follow to be better qualified and improve your chances of getting a job on a superyacht.

For instance, courses about hospitality, flower arranging, food and drink service are ideal for someone who aspires to work as a steward.

Courses on carpentry, powerboats and diving are ideal for anyone wishing to get a job as a deckhand.

The more relevant skills you have, the better your chances are of getting a job as a crew member more quickly and easily.

To get a job on a superyacht, it’s important to start off by preparing yourself well to be a good prospective applicant.

Complete the STCW Basic Safety Training course and get as many relevant qualifications as you can.

You will also need to hold an ENG 1 medical which proves that you are fit to work on board a sea vessel.

Make sure to prepare a good CV to delineate your qualifications and experience to prospective employers.

You may wish to check for jobs through yachting agencies and online job platforms.

It’s also important to understand how the superyacht charter season works to know when is the best time to look for such job openings.

Dockwalking is a great way to find a job as a crew member, or to gain some experience which will improve your chances of getting an even better job in the future.

The superyacht season in the Mediterranean starts off in March and goes on until May.

The winter season in the Caribbean ranges from October to May the following year.

During these periods the demand for new crew increases greatly.

Hence this is the best time to look for a job on a yacht.

By now you should have a good idea of the various careers available on board a superyacht, along with the various responsibilities of the different roles.

We also gave you some tips to help you to get started and how to best go about finding and applying for such a post.

Working on the Seas: Visas You Need Working on a Superyacht

  • April 10, 2023

Working on a superyacht can be an exciting and rewarding career choice, providing opportunities to travel, meet new people, and enjoy a unique lifestyle. However, one of the key requirements for working on a superyacht is having the appropriate visa. There are many types of visas you can get when working on a superyacht, and the ones you’ll need will generally depend on where you will be going.

Yacht Crew Visa B1/B2

Visas to work on Yachts

Generally to work on Yachts there are only 2 things to keep in mind.

  • What you need to work on Yacht in Caribbean or United States (B1/B2 Visa)
  • What you need to work on a Yacht in Europe and the Mediterranean (Schengen Rules)

Yacht Crew Visa to work in the Meditereanean

First of all there is no “Visa for Yacht Crew”. To work on board, the yacht agent /management company will stamp you on board and you will be part of the crew. The only thing you need to consider is if you are allowed to be/travel in the Europe zone. You do not need a Visa if:

1. You have a EU-passport

2. You have a Passport with a Schengen exemption 90 days in 180 days. Passports include United States, UK, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and many other countries on the Schengen List.

The way it works is. You enter Europe Schengen with your passport. Once employed we stamp you on board and your Schengen days stop counting. The day you disembark or finish your contract you will be stamped back out from the Yacht in to Europe and you are officially in Europe again.

Yacht Crew Visa to work in United States

A Yacht Crew Visa, also known as a B1/B2 visa, is required for non-U.S. citizens who wish to work on a superyacht that will be traveling to or within the United States. Canada Passport and US Passport holders do not need a B1/B2.

Yacht Crew Visa to work in Caribbean

A Yacht Crew Visa, also known as a B1/B2 visa, is required for non-U.S. citizens who wish to work on a Superyacht that will be traveling to or within the United States and Caribbean (Not legally, but required sometimes by the Yacht). Canada Passport and US Passport holders do not need a B1/B2.

Below is other types of visas for working on board.

Seafarers Visa (C1/D)

A Seafarers Visa, also known as a C1/D visa, is the most common visa required for working on superyachts. This visa is designed specifically for crew members working on board commercial vessels, including superyachts, and allows the holder to enter multiple countries for the purpose of joining or departing from the vessel. The C1/D visa is issued by the United States but is recognized by many other countries worldwide. To obtain this visa, you will need to have a valid job offer from a yacht and provide proof of your qualifications and experience.

Schengen Visa

A Schengen Visa is required for crew members working on superyachts that will be traveling within the Schengen Area, which consists of 26 European countries. This visa allows the holder to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. To apply for a Schengen Visa, you will need to provide proof of your employment, a letter from the yacht’s captain or management company, and proof of adequate financial means to support yourself during your stay.

Yacht Crew Visa (B1/B2)

A Yacht Crew Visa, also known as a B1/B2 visa, is required for non-U.S. citizens who wish to work on a superyacht that will be traveling to or within the United States. This visa allows the holder to enter the U.S. for business or pleasure and is typically valid for up to 10 years. To obtain a B1/B2 visa, you will need to provide proof of your employment on a superyacht, a letter from the yacht’s captain or management company, and proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in the U.S.

Australian Maritime Crew Visa (Subclass 988)

Finally, the Australian Maritime Crew Visa (subclass 988) is required for crew members working on superyachts that will be traveling to or within Australian waters. This visa allows the holder to enter Australia for the purpose of joining or departing from a vessel and is usually valid for up to three years. To apply for this visa, you will need to provide proof of your employment on a superyacht, a letter from the yacht’s captain or management company, and proof of enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Australia.

Obtaining the appropriate visas is a crucial step in preparing for a career on a superyacht. It is essential to research the specific visa requirements for the countries you will be visiting, gather all necessary documents, and submit your applications in a timely manner. By following these steps, you can ensure that you have the proper documentation to work legally on a superyacht and enjoy a successful career in the maritime industry.

Yachtie Careers offers all-in-one yacht training, helping individuals gain the skills and documents they need to work legally and happily across the seas. If you are looking to get your hands on a career in yachting , reach out to us today!

So You Want to Work on a Yacht in the Caribbean

Carol_Bareuther

You know you want it...

Maybe you live in a cold climate and dream of a career on warm tropical seas. Or, perhaps the Caribbean is home, but you’re stuck behind a desk and yearn to work on one of the yachts that cruise by your office window. Either way, you’re in luck. There are many opportunities to work on yachts in the region. What is key is to be prepared.

Positions Aplenty

“There are two types of jobs on yachts: at sea and shore-based,” explains John Duffy, president of the Antigua-based Caribbean Marine Association (CMA) . “Those at sea will include captains, first mates, engineers, stewards and stewardesses, deck hands, chefs/cooks, and even nurses and masseurs, all largely dependent on the size of the yacht.

For crewed charter yachts, “we seek couples, or a better word would be ‘teams’ – a captain and a chef/mate We need folks that are already comfortable working together in close quarters,” explains Dick Schoonover, manager of CharterPort BVI , in Tortola. “For a chef, a week-long sample menu is important to see. This shows that someone can plan for a week, and (theoretically) translate their menu plan into a shopping list.”

Chartering 101: Newbie Tips on WHERE to Charter a Yacht

In the sport fishing profession, “jobs here are mostly for deckhands. Very occasionally, and usually temporarily, a captain may be required,” says Gary Clifford, captain and owner of True Blue Sportfishing charters, based in St. George’s, Grenada.

Shore-based jobs are typically in the maintenance and supply industries, according to CMA’s Duffy. “These range from painting, carpentry and engine maintenance to electronic repairs plus the supply of goods and provisions.”

Sean Devaux, general manager of IGY’s Rodney Bay Marina , in St. Lucia, agrees and adds: “Boatyard jobs include technical work such as welding, woodwork, sail repairs, hydraulic and engine repairs, air conditioning repairs and all other basic repairs.”

Boat Repair and Storage: Caribbean Boatyard Updates

Landside positions on the charter side are for charter brokers and central agents, according to Ann McHorney, founder and director of Select Yachts , a Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based yacht charter, management and sales company. “These positions require a good knowledge of yachts, logistics, maritime regulations and, of course, computer skills.”

Avoiding the Boatyard Blues

Qualifications are Key

There are ‘must have’ qualifications needed in every marine-based position, as well as ‘extra’ skills that can mean the difference between landing the job or not.

“Captains must possess the requisite level of certification necessary for captaining a large vessel with guests on board,” says Ian Pedersen, marketing manager for the Americas for The Moorings , in Clearwater, Florida. “Past experience is a huge positive, as perhaps no other industry can properly prepare you for hosting guests from all over the world aboard the close-quarters of a yacht for extended periods of time. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the individual’s personality is key, as they are ultimately the ambassador not only of the company, but of the destination the guests are visiting as well. It is our hope that our skippers make our guests’ vacation memorable for all the right reasons. Being able to properly welcome guests into the entire yachting experience and lifestyle, rather than simply getting the boat from A to B, is our aim.”

Finding the Right Boatyard

Charter yacht crew applicants must have their STCW Basic Safety Training International Certificate of Competency , says Select Yacht’s McHorney. “Additionally, prospective crew should present applicable skills in their CV. Any watersports, computer, technology and mechanical skills, travel experience, personal training and fitness, massage therapy, restaurant work, family cruising, childcare; so many things are applicable if they present it in a positive light. Employer references or previous captain references are a plus.”

On sport fishing boats it’s not only about fighting blue marlin. Photos courtesy of Hackshaw Charters

In charter fishing and day tours, “we prefer experience, however many of our most successful staff members came in with no experience,” says Chris Hackshaw, owner of Hackshaw’s Boat Charters , in St. Lucia. “We look for people who are willing to learn, have good social skills, able to work flexible hours, and having a love of the ocean does not hurt! Once someone meets this, we see how they work and what line of work best suites them. Some may be better suited on the sport fishing boats, while others on the whale watching boats.”

For a boatyard position, “reliability, experience and qualifications” are most important, according to IGY Rodney Bay Marina’s Devaux.

Keep Your Day Job

Advice from Insiders

Patience is key, says The Moorings Pedersen. “There is a delicate balance between being the captain responsible for the safety and maintenance of the vessel and everyone on board, and recognizing that the guests on board are there to have fun and experience a special vacation.”

Yet, crews need to keep the word ‘work’ in mind. “Owners spend heavily on their investment. Therefore, crew need to be fair in providing the work for which they are paid. Creating a good mix of work combined with personal time is the best way to go,” recommends Select Yacht’s McHorney.

For those who don’t call the Caribbean home, there are often employment restrictions regarding non-nationals.

“Don’t come here to work unless you have a job lined up in advance,” says the CMA’s Duffy. “You are not permitted to seek work when you are on a holiday entry visa. If you do work ashore without a work permit you will be deported. If you wish to work either on a yacht or ashore, check the internet. There are plenty of jobs available and there are legal ways of getting employment.”

Don't Miss a Beat!

Best Locations and Seasons to Land a Yacht Job

Yachts normally operate seasonally. During these times, there is plenty of opportunity to find a position aboard a luxury or superyacht, no matter your level of experience. There are several different yachting hubs from where you can launch your career – usually the most beautiful places in the world! To ensure that you secure your spot on deck, it’s important to know where to be and when.

Can you get a job from home?

The short answer is, no. Crew members are often picked up with very short notice, sometimes even on the same day of applying! The captain of the vessel usually conducts the interview and will want to meet with you in person, so you have to make yourself physically available in these main hiring ports. Book short-term accommodation, as you hopefully won’t be at this location very long before getting a job on a luxury yacht! The process could take a week, if you’re very lucky, but sometimes up to two months – be sure to budget accordingly! Perhaps consider doing other jobs like waitressing on land while you wait for a yacht job.

Top yacht crew hiring ports

Best for newbies.

The six locations below are the hiring hotspots and will offer far greater access to quality job opportunities for those individuals freshly entering the industry:

  • Sails Marina, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Rybovich, West Palm Beach, Florida
  • IYCA Port Vauban, Antibes, France
  • Port de Palma, Palma de Mallorca, Spain
  • Port Vell, Barcelona, Spain
  • Newport, Rhode Island

Second-Tier Yacht Crew Hiring Ports / Locations

The following is a list of what we’ll term “secondary” options for worthwhile hiring ports. Mega-yachts pass through these destinations, but not in vast numbers or as frequently as with the list above. These places, however, have STCW-recognised training schools, or at least some crew-recruitment agencies in the area, so you can get take your STCW certification and register with a placement service before heading to where more boats are located (if you have not already qualified in South Africa):

  • St. Martin/St. Maarten in the Caribbean
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Auckland, New Zealand
  • Antigua in the Caribbean
  • San Diego, California
  • Viareggio, Italy

Third-Tier Yacht Crew Hiring Ports / Locations

While these may not be the key spots for easily finding a position, the destinations below can be considered a third tier. Experienced crew tend to do okay basing themselves here, but we do not recommend them for entry-level job hunters. For some individuals, however, these spots may be the only option due to proximity and the inability to travel far:

  • U.K.— London, Southampton, and Dover
  • The Netherlands
  • The Bahamas
  • South Africa

Other ports to consider:

  • Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
  • Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
  • Phuket, Thailand
  • Galle Harbour, Sri Lanka
  • English Harbour, Antigua

The Mediterranean

Ports: Spain, Italy, France.

The best time to be in the Mediterranean is March/April/May/June. Plenty of ports are extremely accessible during this period as trains constantly run the entire length of the French and Italian Riviera. This means that you could simply go from port to port to meet captains and crew. September, which nears the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, is also a good time to find employment as an entry-level crew member. We recommend heading to Antibes in the South of France.

Some yachts will be looking for crew to complete the Atlantic crossing from the Mediterranean to the USA or the Caribbean. Yachts are often registered offshore, therefore, working on board a Cayman Islands registered yacht in the USA, is not considered illegal by Maritime Law. You cannot, however, work on US flagged vessels without a legal US Passport, US Working Visa, or Green Card. Chat to us for advice regarding the visa requirements for working on board any of these luxury yachts.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a popular port to find work. Visas for entering the USA have become more challenging to attain, however, so this option isn’t the simplest. Most yachts will go into a Shipyard period once or twice a year for maintenance, which is a great time to look for daywork. This varies, but many yachts will complete their maintenance periods from February – April in the USA.

The Caribbean and Bahama Islands

This is one of the most beautiful routes in the world – understandably making it one of the most popular . Super yachts sail to the Caribbean and Bahamas from December to May, the Northern Hemisphere winter months. Most vessels are based in South Florida, making Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach the places where most people find crew work. We recommend finding ways of boosting your skill set before applying for any positions, as it will help you stand out from the many people keen to land a job on vessels sailing this route. Consider getting a scuba diving licence or growing your knowledge of the local marine life.

Getting Placed From South African Ports

Getting placed directly from South Africa is a little harder for newbies, as most vessels hire only more experienced crew. Locations of travel from South African ports include: Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Maldives / Seychelles) and South Atlantic (Brazil, Caribbean). Best time for work is December through March and May through July.

Necessary Qualifications

To qualify for work on board a yacht, you will need to complete:

  • The STCW Basic Safety Training course, and
  • An ENG1 or seafarer medical certificate

To work on a boat cruising the Caribbean it is advisable to have both a Schengen and B1B2 visa as some of the Islands still fall under European and US dependency. It is also highly advisable to have many spare pages in your passport for a Caribbean season as there is immigration control and an entry and exit stamp on your passport for every Island.

Speak to us if you’d like to discuss possible courses that could benefit you ; our academy is internationally accredited. If you’d just like to get an idea whether a yacht job is really for you, consider downloading our ultimate yacht crew handbook that will give you the ins and outs of yacht crew life, with additional tips to help you get that job on a private yacht.

work on super yachts caribbean

Superyacht jobs are available in Europe and the U.S. for travel around the world.

According to a Superyachting Index Report :

“… about 25,000 crewmembers are necessary for today’s fleet of superyachts, but only about 15,000 currently work aboard yachts.”

I can imagine the eyes of any aspiring superyacht job seeker lighting up after reading a statistic like that!

However, it is important to remember that, even though the superyacht market has expanded at a quicker rate than at any other point in its history, finding work as superyacht crew still represents a massive challenge—especially for the inexperienced.

This seems to be an ongoing concern for many industry outsiders. I recently received an email from a friend seeking help on the subject of how to find work on superyachts.

“Hi Matt, my son is just about to leave the Royal Navy after 6 years of service; he wants to work on a superyacht at entry level as a deckhand. Please could you advise where you think would be the best place to visit agencies in person and at what time of year? He is registering with the various online agencies but doesn’t seem to be having much luck at the moment. I am sure that if he could meet prospective Captains and crew it would be the best way for him to sell himself, as he is honest and hardworking. Is it the wrong time of year to do the French Riviera dockwalks, etc.? Your advice would be so much appreciated.” Brian

Is the Superyacht Industry Seasonal?

The first thing to be aware of is that the superyacht calendar is cyclical—not necessarily seasonal in the traditional sense.

It typically involves the summer season spent in the Mediterranean (April–September) and the winter season in the Caribbean (October–March).

At the start and end of a superyacht season, there is usually a lot of chopping and changing going on among superyacht crew as many leave their yachts for a number of different reasons.

Sometimes the position was only seasonal to begin with, sometimes the itineraries of certain yachts do not agree with the wishes of a certain crew, while others may decide to leave the industry to explore other interests altogether.

Whatever the circumstances, it can be a very unsettling time for crew — especially when good friends leave!

Know Your Options

Now that you have an idea as to the movement of superyachts at the various times of the year, it is relatively straightforward to decide where you are going to start your job search. Job boards also exist to help you, and are listed at the bottom of this article.

The two key months here are April (Europe) and October (U.S.).

There is all kind of work to be done on a superyacht.

How To Make It Happen in Europe

If you intend to start your job search in April, then you need to be based at one of the major ports like Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics or Antibes in France. The latter is by far the best option, given the access to other ports and marinas on the French Riviera, Monaco and Italy. Also, certain docks are blocked off in Palma and you cannot access them without an electronic key card.

Once you are in Antibes, you can use the French and Italian rail system to explore literally hundreds of docks and thousands of berths across the Mediterranean’s largest ports and marinas. There a number of boat shows from April onwards including the Antibes Boat Show, the Monaco Boat Show, and later in the season the Cannes Boat Show.

When Should I Arrive?

If you choose to start in Europe, you should plan to arrive around the middle of April. This is early in the season but will give you plenty of time to register with the crew recruitment agencies, start networking with other crew, and implement some dock-walking strategies, such as those found at work on superyachts.

Many superyachts will still be in the U.S. at this stage and/or crossing the Atlantic back to the Med for the European season. If you arrive early enough you can literally be there standing on the docks with your CV in hand as they arrive in the port.

How Long Will It Take To Find Work?

For anyone with little or no experience with the yachting industry, I would allow for a minimum of 4-6 weeks to find permanent work onboard a superyacht.

This time period is not set in stone as you may find a permanent position within a couple of weeks, but I just want to make sure that your expectations are as accurate as possible—there are a lot of people looking to find work on superyachts today, and the role of the deckhand is especially competitive.

You may find that first permanent job in a couple of weeks, but you must be prepared to ride it out if necessary. You can and will find daywork during this period so you will be earning money during this time. Daywork pays anywhere from €12 to €15 per hour or approximately €100 per day.

How Much Should I Budget For Every Day?

This all depends on how much time you spend down at the bar! All jokes aside though, it will depend on how disciplined you are.

You can expect to pay €6 for a pint of beer at The Blue Lady (a popular yachtie hangout) and close to €10 for a drink in a nightclub. You can get away with spending €20 a day on meals as there are many snack bars and delicatessens.

Transport on the French and Italian train system is relatively cheap and I know many yachties that don’t pay for transport on the trains at all. Just don’t get caught as the fines are €25 without a valid ticket and €50 if you hold no ticket at all.

For accommodations, you can expect to pay between €100 and €150 per week in a flat share or crew house. It is often cheaper to rent an apartment with four others, for example, than, say, staying in a crew house. Do the research and network, network, network!

Where Do I Stay?

There are many crew houses in Antibes. However, there are a lot of people looking for work so you can expect the crew houses to be fully booked more often than not.

If you cannot find accommodations in Antibes, I would highly recommend looking in Juan Les Pins or Biot—both are a very short train ride away from Antibes and are accessible by bus and even bicycle. You can do it by foot if you really need to.

What Visas Do I Need to Look for a Job in the European Union?

Holders of European passports do not need a visa. If you hold a passport from outside of the European Union, always check with your local consulate about whether or not you need a visa to enter France or any other country where you decide to start your job search. For holders of non-European passports, you will most likely need to obtain a Schengen visa .

How To Make it Happen in the U.S. (and easier option for Americans)

The superyacht capital of the world is Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. There are many shipyards, docks and marinas, and all are relatively easy to access by bicycle, public transport or car. Around October, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show takes place, so many of the words finest superyachts will be in town for the world’s premier yachting exhibition.

Whether you are currently based in the U.S. or planning to travel there from Europe or elsewhere in the world, I would look to arrive from October onwards. Once again, this is early in the season as many yachts will still be in the Med and/or crossing the Atlantic and making their way to the U.S. for the Caribbean season. Many yachts will undergo a yard period at this time of year, as these days it is often cheaper to have maintenance work done in the U..S than it is in Europe.

As in Europe, it’s a bit of a lottery and a very difficult question to answer. Once again though, it will all depend on your level of experience and skill set. Many recruitment agencies like Elite Crew in Fort Lauderdale will not be able to help you with a job search if you don’t hold an appropriate visa for the U.S. ( B1/B2 or C1/D Seaman’s visa). As a guideline it could take someone with little or no experience at least 4–6 weeks to find a permanent position. This factors in how long it will take you to find daywork and thereby gain enough experience onboard a superyacht so that your CV or resume will be seriously reviewed by a Captain or 1st Mate.

There are a number of apartment shares and crew houses available in Fort Lauderdale. Simply search for “Crew accommodation.”

Once again this depends on how disciplined you are. If you’re going to go out partying at Waxy’s (a popular crew bar) every night of the week, then you’re going to make this far harder than it needs to be. A beer at Waxy’s will cost you $6 and a drink in a nightclub around $8.

You won’t have to spend much money on transport as the best way for you to hit the many docks, marinas and shipyards is by bicycle. You can pick up a new bicycle from Target for $150 or buy a second-hand one from a used bicycle store for around $50. You can get away with spending $30 on food a day, as there are many fast food establishments. Crew accommodations will set you back approximately $100–$150 per week.

What Visas Do I Need?

For non-US citizens, remember to obtain a B1/B2 visa (currently $185) or C1/D Seaman’s visa before you leave.
