Established in 1981, Johnson Marine Services has been providing professional marine surveys to boat owners and prospective buyers for over 20 years in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, and the Caribbean areas.

Our marine surveyors are Accredited Marine Surveyors (AMS ® ) with the Society of Marine Surveyors (SAMS ® ), as well as members of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). In addition to our professional services, both of our surveyors have extended offshore and coastal yachting experience.

We have both worked extensively on commercial and pleasure craft as well as maintaining our own boats. We specialize in performing pre-purchase, insurance, and damage marine surveys for pleasure and commercial power and sailing vessels. Our surveyors provide prompt professional service and generally complete the survey report within 48 hours of the survey. Whether you are purchasing, insuring, or safety inspecting a new or used vessel, Johnson Marine Services has professional, experienced marine surveyors to meet your needs.

Ken and Adrian Johnson

Capt. Ken Johnson, AMS bought his first boat when he was only 10 years of age and has logged in over 150,000 ocean miles since. He started his marine education while serving in the military as a harbor craft operator, then in shipyard management at Electric Boat for 18 years. He founded Johnson Marine services in 1981 as a marine consulting/surveying company serving the public and the military. With over 5,000 surveys under his belt he has the experience you can count on.

Adrian Johnson, AMS has been working commercially on boats for over 20 years. He has thousands of miles in local and transit experience, as well as owning and operating his classic wooden 44 foot sailing vessel and a fishing vessel, as well as several other boats. He has a BS degree in civil engineering, and has been a full time surveyor since 2001. He has performed thousands of surveys in his tested time as a surveyor, and has a vast knowledge of marine structure, composite design and construction, gasoline and diesel engines, and complex mechanical systems.

Get Your Questions Answered

Anyone can title him or herself as a Marine Surveyor and start a business. Certain marine surveyors are permitted to use a designation denoting membership in accrediting organizations that require members to meet strict professional, technical and ethical standards.

Surveyors should provide you with a professionally prepared report that can be accepted by your bank and/or insurance company. Talk with prospective surveyors and ask questions! What does the survey include and what type of reporting format is used? Do they use ABYC, NFPA and USCG standards in their surveys? How much will the inspection cost? How long will the onboard inspection take?

A thorough inspection will not be rushed and will depend on the type of survey required based on vessel size, equipment, and onboard systems. There may be additional services available such as engine surveys, oil analysis, galvanic and stray current corrosion testing, ultrasonic testing, moisture testing and other nondestructive tests. There may be additional charges for these and other services.

Well conducted surveys can provide good information on the vessels condition, but they are not guarantees. The surveyor reports the condition in accessible areas only as it exists at the time of inspection.

Why should you have a vessel surveyed? Most insurance companies and banks will require them on older vessels. They will need to know her condition and fair market value in order to finance and/or underwrite the vessel. Knowing her condition and fair market value before you purchase is also important. However, the most important reason to survey your vessel is for the safety of the passengers and crew.

SAMS® has two membership classes of marine surveyors. The Accredited Marine Surveyor (AMS®) and the Surveyor Associate (SA). Listed below are the items required to apply for membership. A more detailed description will be included in our Membership Request Packet. If you are interested in becoming a SAMS® member, please send your request to [email protected], and include your full name and mailing address.

If applying as an Accredited Marine Surveyor you will need to submit the following:

  • SAMS® Application (included in Membership Packet)
  • SAMS® Admissions Exam (included in Membership Packet)
  • Submit one survey for each of last five years of active surveying
  • Business Card
  • Notarized affidavit attesting completion of 12 surveys per year for each of the last five years
  • $150.00 non-refundable application fee

If applying as a Surveyor Associate, you will need to submit the following:

  • A minimum of one survey report

Marine Surveys are performed for a number of reasons, and the procedures for each vary to best suit your needs.

Pre-Purchase Survey This is the most comprehensive type of inspection and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous onboard systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial.

Insurance Survey This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel’s fair market value.

Appraisal Inspection This inspection is performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally needed for financing, estate settlements, donations and legal cases.

Damage Inspection The surveyor can be retained by an insurance company to determine the cause of a loss and determine the extent of loss related damage and may be asked to recommend repairs, review estimates, and determine the pre-loss value of a vessel. A vessel owner can retain a surveyor for the same purposes, but for the owner’s behalf

Time and additional expense can be saved by preparing the vessel for inspection and making her more accessible.

Arrange to present a clean, shipshape boat, and have all papers and miscellaneous gear ready. If applicable, you will need to make arrangements with the marina to haul the vessel for bottom inspection and retain a captain for sea trials. Lockers and cabin areas should be cleared of all miscellaneous gear.

The surveyor should never be asked to prepare a boat for inspection. The surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior ceilings, headliners, flooring, etc. in order to gain access to the suspected areas. Random removal and examination of below-the-waterline fasteners on wood boats may be required. Any dismantling and reinstallation of parts should be performed by qualified personnel and is the responsibility of the person ordering the survey.

Written authorization from the owner may be needed to board and/or to remove part of the vessel.

ONCE YOU RETAIN THE SURVEYOR, HE OR SHE WORKS ONLY FOR YOU AND REPORTS TO NO ONE ELSE. THE SURVEYOR IS THERE TO PROTECT YOUR INTERESTS!

About Marine Surveys

Marine surveys are conducted on boats or yachts for a variety of reasons, and for various entities or people. Marine surveyors are, by nature of their industry standards, supposed to be impartial and unbiased. Their job is to tell the truth about a boat or yacht, as pleasing or painful as that may be. A marine surveyor’s product is a written report. The survey report should be clear, concise and relay the information needed by the customer(s). Due to the highly technical nature of a marine survey, it may (and will) include terms or jargon that are not familiar to the average boat owner, bank employee or insurance underwriter. You should have a pretty good idea what the overall condition of the vessel is and what needs to be done to make it functional and safe. If you have questions or don’t understand what the surveyor is saying, contact the surveyor and have them explain. That’s their job.

Types of Marine Surveys

  • A Prepurchase Survey is conducted when someone is contemplating buying a vessel. It is a very comprehensive “Condition and Valuation” (C&V) survey that often includes operational testing of all systems and equipment, as well as a sea trial. Its primary purpose is to provide the potential buyers with the information that they need to make an informed purchase decision. It may also be used to satisfy insurance company and bank loan requirements.
  • A Limited Condition & Valuation marine survey is often done specifically for insurance purposes. Each insurance company has their own set of requirements as to what age/size vessel needs a survey, and what the survey report should include. The information contained in an insurance C&V survey report is not sufficient to make an informed decision regarding the purchase of the vessel.
  • Appraisal surveys are used for financing, estate and divorce settlements, and donation of vessels to charities. Professional marine surveyors are recognized by the IRS, courts, banks and insurance companies as boat and yacht appraisers within their area of expertise.
  • Damage Surveys may also be performed for insurance companies, vessel owners and other vested entities. This includes determining the nature, cause and extent of damage to a vessel when something goes wrong.

Finding a Surveyor

A marine survey is a useful tool for buyers when negotiating price based on what repairs the boat needs. Additionally insurance and lending companies that need to know the true condition and fair market value of a vessel often require it.

The task in choosing a trusted marine surveyor can be challenging since it is not a regulated or licensed industry and anyone can call him or herself a marine surveyor. To complicate matters, your yacht broker can’t ethically recommend a surveyor to you.

Many insurance companies and banks require that a marine surveyor be a credentialed member of either the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). Be sure to check for requirements prior to hiring a surveyor. NAMS and SAMS are recognized and respected marine surveyor professional associations that hold their members to a strict code of ethics and require continuing education credits to maintain membership.

ABYC Standards are the authoritative reference for evaluating issues of design, construction, maintenance and product performance and only ABYC members have verifiable 24/7 access the standards. Make sure your surveyor is one of them.

What a Good Survey Provides

The survey report should be clear, concise and relay the information needed by the customer(s). Due to the highly technical nature of a marine survey, it may (and will) include terms or jargon that are not familiar to the average boat owner, bank employee or insurance underwriter.

A Condition & Valuation survey report should contain all of the pertinent information about the vessel, including the names of the owners and/or buyers, weather conditions, location, etc. It should:

  • Identify unique markings such as the name, hailing port, hull identification number (HIN), and federal or state government registration numbers
  • Provide published dimensions of the vessel and describe its construction
  • Detail the construction of the vessel and equipment installed to the degree needed or required, depending on the purpose of the survey
  • Remark on the condition of the vessel and its systems, both in general and in detail
  • Provide recommendations for repairs or corrections needed to make the vessel function properly and safe
  • Photographs of the vessel from several angles should be included, as well as of the HIN and registration numbers. Photographs of any notable improvements or deficiencies should be included as well
  • Include the vessel’s current fair market value, and possibly its replacement value

Regardless of format, after reading a survey report, and maybe re-reading it a couple of times, you should have a pretty good idea what the overall condition of the vessel is and what needs to be done to make it functional and safe. If you have questions or don’t understand what the surveyor is saying, contact the surveyor and have them explain. That’s their job.

Thank you for your inspection last week. I ‘do’ appreciate your work and review of the 39’ Shannon sailboat. I also appreciated and enjoyed you pulling me to your side time to time and pointing out the challenges of upgrading and maintenance. I felt as if you were mentoring me, and I truly thank you for that.

I imagine that the survey process can be intimidating for people looking to buy a boat across the country. Thankfully, it was not that way for me and my wife. Prior to selecting you, I spoke with a few other surveyors. I am really happy that we decided to work with you.

What stands out to me the most about the survey process was your knowledge, thoroughness, and ability to educate.

8 Things A Marine Surveyor Wants You To Know

If you've never had a marine survey before, here are some things to help make the experience better.

A man smiles and holds on to the side of a sailboat sitting on jacks on land

It's not hard to make a surveyor smile. All it takes is a little prep work on your behalf. (Photo: Mark Corke)

Over the years, BoatUS has written plenty on the importance of getting a marine survey on a boat you're considering buying, and for good reason. For many people, a boat may be the second biggest purchase they make, after a house, and there's a lot at stake financially.

Many insurance companies and banks require a Condition and Valuation survey in order to provide coverage or financing. But if you've never had a boat surveyed you might be wondering what to expect when you do need one. BoatUS Magazine's  contributing editor and accredited marine surveyor, Mark Corke, offers up this advice.

Do Your Research Ahead Of Time

Decide what sort of boat you want and need. Have a look at a few models, then narrow down the list to one or two before you engage a surveyor. A surveyor has looked at hundreds or thousands of boats during his career and can offer advice on many boats, but he does not know which boat will suit you. One of my clients, after having me check out several boats, eventually asked me if I thought he should buy a power or sailboat! You'll need to have your choices much narrower than that. The last thing a surveyor wants to do is tell you what kind of boat is best for you.

It's Not Just About The Cost

yacht surveyor

Don't choose a surveyor on price alone. Of course you need to know up front what the cost of the survey will be, but it could be a case of "if you don't pay now, you'll pay later." That bargain-basement-price survey could cost you in the long run should the surveyor miss some important fault on the boat.

If problems are caught before inking the deal, you have the option of renegotiating the price or getting faults corrected before you take delivery of the boat. While there is no guarantee that you will get more from a more expensive surveyor, as in all things, you typically get what you pay for. Prices are generally around $20 to $22 per foot, but if you're quoted $12 per foot you need to ask yourself why.

Surveyors often get concerned when a client asks for a cheap survey because "it's only for insurance." Most surveyors are professionals and want you to be happy with your boat and ensure your safety on the water. In return, you want him or her to spot any deficiencies with the boat. Surveyors need to be able to stand behind their work (possibly even in the courtroom), and doing a "light" survey doesn't help anyone. Most surveyors have a set fee based on the size and type of boat, the type of survey, travel costs, and so on.

By all means ask how much the surveyor charges, but don't wait until the day of the survey and then try to start negotiating the fee. You have the right to back out of the purchase up until your contract acceptance deadline, which is often at least several days after the survey date. If you change your mind about the boat after the survey is done, the surveyor still has to be paid. Most surveyors expect payment on the day the service is completed. Surveyors typically won't send out the completed survey report until they get paid. It's the surveyor's version of "no cash, no splash."

The Surveyor Works For You Only

You'll be paying the bill, so it's important that you understand that the surveyor reports only to you. He doesn't share his findings with anyone else unless you specifically request it. If you have a broker acting as your buyer's agent, then you may ask that the surveyor send a copy of the survey to the agent as it makes your broker's job easier if he's asking for things to be addressed. Keep in mind that a survey is only good for a specific time because it's really a snapshot of what the boat was like on a specific day. Old surveys should not be relied upon.

Make Sure The Boat Is Prepared

If you are asking a surveyor to come to your boat to perform an insurance survey, make sure that the surveyor has access. Don't expect him or her to empty out lockers of heavy anchors, bags of sails, and boxes of spare parts. The surveyor needs to look at the mechanical parts of the boat, and it causes delays to have to move tons of stuff out of the way. If in doubt, ask the surveyor what he needs before he arrives. He won't expect everything to be off the boat, but he will appreciate reasonable access. One client asked me to survey his 33-foot sailboat, but it turned out that the entire contents of a small apartment seemed to have been crammed aboard. If that wasn't bad enough, the boat also had a Great Dane aboard!

Don't Get In The Surveyor's Way

Most surveyors like it when the buyer is at the survey. They can answer questions and point out things of interest on the boat that may not find their way into the survey report. That being said, it makes the job slower if you hover. Allow the surveyor to do his job — you'll get a complete written report about everything he sees.

A Sea Trial Is Not A Boat Ride

The purpose of a sea trial is to check the boat's systems, engines, generators, electronics, and other parts that cannot be inspected while the boat is not under commission or is "on the hard." The surveyor will need to pay close attention to the engines, helm, and systems, and how the boat handles. To get the most from a sea trial, leave the kids, dog, and Aunt Kate at home. They can get a ride on the boat later, assuming you buy it. Too many folks on the boat makes it difficult for the surveyor to do the job properly.

Surveyors Are Happy To Talk Things Over With You

Most surveyors are only too happy to talk to you about the survey process, especially if this is your first time employing a surveyor. They will also answer questions after the survey, so don't be scared to call them up if you see something in a survey report that you don't understand. Surveyors are on boats every day, but owners and buyers may not always understand some of the technical terms.

Relationships Are Important

Surveyors want to build solid relationships, because their reputations are at stake. There's a saying experienced surveyors tell newbies: You're only as good as your last survey. Marine surveyors are often independent businesses and want you to call them first when you buy your next boat and also to recommend them to friends and family. If you have a problem with a survey (or a surveyor) don't hesitate to bring it up.

How Much Does A Boat Survey Cost?

If you’re seriously thinking about the prospect of buying a boat – or guaranteeing the safety and structural integrity of your current vessel – one question that may be on your mind is this: How much does a boat survey cost? The cost of a boat survey – internet searchable as “ boat survey cost ” or “boat surveyor cost” – can vary greatly depending on a number of factors. In the following, we will explore these factors and provide you with valuable insights into what to expect when hiring a marine surveyor.

Factors Affecting Boat Survey Cost

Below are some of the factors that can affect the cost of carrying out a boat survey:

  • Type of Survey : The type of survey you need plays a big part in determining the boat survey cost. There are several types of marine surveys, including pre-purchase surveys, insurance surveys, marina admittance surveys, and haul-out surveys. Each type serves a specific purpose and comes with its own pricing structure.
  • Boat Size : The size of your boat also plays an important role in determining the cost of the survey. Larger vessels usually require more time and effort to inspect thoroughly. That can result in higher boat surveyor costs.
  • Location: The geographical location of the survey can affect the cost. Marine surveyors may charge different amounts depending on the region or country where the survey is conducted.
  • Complexity of the Boat : The complexity of your boat, including its age, design, and systems, can affect the boat survey cost. Older boats or those with complicated systems might need more in-depth inspections. That can lead to higher expenses.
  • Additional Services : Some boat surveyors offer additional services, such as sea trials or moisture meter testing. These optional services can increase the final boat survey cost.
  • Surveyor’s Experience : The experience and qualifications of the marine surveyor you hire can also influence the cost. Highly experienced surveyors might charge higher fees for their expertise.

Types of Boat Surveys and Their Costs

A pre-purchase survey is needed when you’re considering buying a boat. It provides a complete assessment of the vessel’s condition, helping you make a much better decision. The boat survey cost for a pre-purchase survey typically ranges from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the factors mentioned above.

Insurance companies frequently require an insurance survey to determine a vessel’s insurability and set appropriate coverage rates. The boat survey cost for insurance purposes can vary but is usually more affordable than a pre-purchase survey. It can range from a couple of hundred to over a thousand dollars.

Marinas may require a survey of your boat before granting admission to their facilities. The cost of a marina admittance survey is pretty moderate, often falling within the lower range of survey costs.

Haul-out surveys are conducted when a boat is removed from the water for inspection and maintenance. These surveys can be more labor-intensive and may have higher boat surveyor costs because of the additional effort needed for a thorough inspection.

Choosing the Right Marine Surveyor

When choosing a marine surveyor , it’s important to think about their qualifications, experience, and reputation in the industry. While cost is a factor, it should not be the singular determination in your decision. A skilled and experienced surveyor can provide you with a thorough and accurate assessment of your vessel – and that can save you money in the long run by identifying any hidden issues.

The boat survey cost, also referred to as “boat surveyor cost,” can vary based on things like the type of survey, boat size, location, complexity of the vessel, additional services, and the surveyor’s experience. Remember to obtain multiple quotes and pick a marine surveyor who can provide a complete assessment of your boat’s condition. By investing in a quality survey, you can guarantee the safety and value of your vessel for years to come.

At Lawson Marine Surveyors, we offer numerous types of services, including pre-purchase surveys, insurance surveys, marina admittance surveys, and haul-out surveys. Our goal is to assure the safety and structural integrity of every vessel assignment. We’ll spend as much time as needed to achieve this goal. We follow a strict code of ethics with continuing education all year long. We will answer every question you may have regarding the inspection we have been hired to do.

International Yacht Surveyors

Thorough Yacht Surveys, Promptly Reported, Clearly Explained.

  • Experienced Yacht Surveyor specialising in leisure craft
  • Authorised Small Commercial Vessel Surveyor on behalf of the UK Marine and Coastguard Agency
  • Reports delivered promptly, most within 2 working days of leaving the boat
  • Over 1000 vessels surveyed

Working in the Marine Industry since 1988, and on small craft since 2007, our surveyor has been elected a fellow member of all of three major surveyor associations : Royal Institution of Naval Architects, Yacht Designers and Surveyors (YDSA), and the International Institution of Marine Surveying (IIMS).

We can undertake small commercial vessel (Coding) surveys for the following certifying authorities :

  • RYA (Royal Yachting Association)
  • IIMS (International Institution of Marine Surveying)

Maple Marine is an independent yacht survey company with an international outlook.

We have a reputation for performing thorough surveys.

Our role is to inspect the boat in an objective, fair and independent way, factually reporting on the condition of the boat.

We highlight both the good features as well as the defects, giving a rounded assessment of the boat as we find it.

“I really am very impressed with the quality, thoroughness, depth and professionalism of the survey you carried out on the boat last week. There probably isn’t that much to do with boats with which we can ever feel that we have achieved great value but I truly feel in the case of your survey that on this occasion you have provided just that.” Glenn Haley.

The aim is to report in a prompt manner, finishing and delivering the report the as quickly as practicable. We know that prompt receipt of the report is important to you so you can complete the purchase, be able to use your boat commercially, or have your boat repaired at the earliest opportunity.

“Very impressed with Martin his explaining of everything on the day was good and clear taking the time to explain the details and the process. The best part for me was that he rang up before the Survey was sent to explain the key findings. A very professional and knowledgeable person who I would recommend to everyone. Thanks Martin for making the process a pleasure” Paul Reynolds

Before we send you the report we normally talk to you in order to go through our findings so you have a good understanding of the issues and recommendations before you read the report. In this way you can ask for clarification and gain a full understanding of what is behind each of the findings.

Our aim is to provide you with a clear understanding of the condition of the vessel so you can make your decisions with confidence.

Hmmm, my kind of boat. If I were rich, I'd want to buy one of these.

It has always baffled me why, in the south, the open fisherman wasn't a more popular boat.

I mean, everyone says they like the great outdoors, but then they wrap themselves up in a closed box.

Maybe its because the ladies don't like to sweat, who knows. I don't like to sweat either, but I got to tell you, you'll do a lot less sweating on a boat like this than one where they tried to cram a house worth of accommodations into a 43 foot space. Entire Article .

All About Buying Used and Older Boats

When we were young, we just loved the idea of buying a new car. But by the time we've owned three or four of them - often without paying off the balance of last one before buying the next - eventually we discover what a tremendous waste of our financial resources this is.

How to prevent your boat from sinking.

Tens of thousands of boats of all types and sizes sink every year, most of them at their dock. The exact number is not known because there is no agency that keeps statistics. But just ask any marine insurance company and they will tell you that the number is far too high. In fact, sinking is the number one cause of major marine losses, and one of the primary reasons why marine insurance costs so much. Entire Article

They have had surveys performed on boats they propose to buy on which the surveyor used a moisture meter on the hull.

Core and Structural Issues

Are they fiberglass boats anymore.

It happened when I was asked by a client to attend an auction of storm damaged boats here in Fort Lauderdale.

There were two minor hurricanes and one tropical storm in Florida last year, but other than to trees, I wasn't aware of much damage having occurred.

In fact, during one of the hurricanes, I was out there with a video camera filming what was going on at several marinas.

Not much, except for a few people that did nothing to prepare. Mostly it was these people's boats that ended up in the auction. Entire Article
