The New Orleans Steamboat Company is no newcomer to the Mississippi River or American's steamboat heritage.  Our parent company has been operating steamboats longer than any company in the world.  In fact, we've been part of the history of steam transport since 1817, just five years after the first steamboat docked in New Orleans. We're now in our fourth decade of life on the Mississippi.  We've given literally millions of people the experience of one of our country's oldest and richest traditions.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

President Abraham Lincoln summarized Vicksburg’s importance clearly when he said, “Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket… They can defy us from Vicksburg… As valuable as New Orleans will be to us, Vicksburg will be more so.” Several other excursion options are available, including exploring museums and historic sites with local expert guides or on your own. Walk aboard an enormous Army Corps of Engineers towboat. Stroll along the charming series of murals painted along the adjacent floodwall and read panels detailing the Vicksburg stories they illustrate.

5 Natchez, MS Day 4 - Natchez, MS In Natchez, grand homes sparkle like jewels, adorning the bluffs that tower above the river. Since 1716, when the French first built a fort here among the Natchez Indians, the town has grown to boast elaborate mansions built by planters in the 1800s to flaunt their wealth. With no Civil War fighting here, Natchez still features hundreds of antebellum homes and buildings. Each of these architectural treasures has its own story to tell, creating a charming downtown that embodies the essence of southern charm and hospitality. Explore on your own or enjoy an array of curated, guided explorations. Tour the elaborate townhomes, visit a working cotton farm to learn about the crop’s importance in history and today, and discover the historic Under-The-Hill Saloon. Drift through quaint shops, nibble on local delights, and enjoy the expansive views of the majestic river valley from the bluff-top park.

6 St. Francisville, LA As the bow-ramp from the ship opens and stretches to the shore, you will be welcomed into the historic cotton port of St. Francisville. Overlooking the river from atop a high, St. Francisville began as a part of Spanish West Florida in the early 1800s until American settlers overthrew the Spanish governing forces, and the region later became part of the United States. Experience this town’s rich history on your own or with a variety of guided excursions. As you explore, discover the Historic District which boasts magnificent mansions and unique boutique shops and admire cottonwood trees which transition to stately oaks adorned with Spanish moss.

7 Baton Rouge, LA Meaning “red stick,” Baton Rouge’s 1699 French name references an ancient geographical marker and reflects the city’s long history. As Louisiana’s state capital, the city still echoes with tales of the characters who lived here, most notably Governor and Senator Huey P. Long. Learn about his dramatic career at the magnificent 1852 Old State Capitol Museum and visit Long’s 1932 State Capitol building, an architectural marvel of granite and marble. Explore many of the well-known downtown neighborhoods, while embracing the rich art, architecture, and nature along the route. If you feel adventurous, take a narrated boat ride through a Louisiana swamp.

8 Houmas House, LA Step off your ship docked right at Houmas House and explore one of the most elaborately renovated of the grand homes along the river, once a private home and a thriving historical agricultural enterprise. Entertaining and knowledgeable guides will escort you through the magnificently restored home’s unmatched collection of stunning period furnishings and artwork. The ornately landscaped grounds include 38 acres of gardens, fountains, and majestic live oak trees. Later, experience the opulence and natural wonder of the Oak Alley estate with its breathtaking parallel row of 28 ancient and massive live oak trees. Here, you can savor a complimentary taste of one of the best mint juleps in the South.

9 New Orleans, LA New Orleans is worth some extra time. Enjoy a feast for your senses if you linger in this magical city, renowned for its delicious cuisine, vibrant music scene, and rich culture with an international flair. Stroll the tree-lined avenues, take a carriage ride through the French Quarter, hop aboard a streetcar to the gorgeous Garden District, or visit the renowned National World War II Museum. If departing the ship in New Orleans, enjoy available city excursions and motorcoach transfers to the airport. Or extend your stay to further explore the delights of the Big Easy.

Pt-305: a new orleans hometown hero.

As 1943 turned to 1944, PT-305 departed New Orleans, and she would not be back for more than six decades.

2 day mississippi riverboat cruise new orleans

Top Photo: For several years, PT-305 cruised Lake Pontchartrain offering rides to National WWII Museum visitors. The National WWII Museum Collection

With the re-opening of the John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion , PT-305 once again appears on public display. The vessel is unique not only because it served in combat in the Mediterranean during the war, but because the Navy’s patrol torpedo boat began its life here. Built in the city of New Orleans, this “hometown hero” is now back for visitors, tourists, and the local community to examine and appreciate up close.

PT-305 came into being over eight weeks in the spring of 1943 at Higgins Industries ’ City Park Plant, a site which is today the grounds of Delgado Community College. The keel became a hull, and that hull emerged from the line in June for the fitting out process, which extended to November 1943.

Once ready, crews took the new vessel out of Lake Pontchartrain and let its trio of Packard 4M-2500 engines roar. During the war years, the lake was abuzz with landing craft, small tugs, swift torpedo boats, and even locally-built Consolidated PBY floatplanes, all plying the waves and enduring the sun strictly for business. At the time, nearly every operation on the lake was dedicated to the hard work of supplying the United States government with the tools of warfare.

As 1943 turned to 1944, PT-305 departed the Crescent City, and she would not be back for more than six decades. Like many young men and women of the Louisiana area, PT-305 would travel far and join in the fight at some far-off territory. After a quick stop in Miami, PT-305, along with the other eleven boats of the US Navy’s Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 22 (Ron 22), hitched a ride across the Atlantic Ocean on the decks of oil tankers.

The men of Ron 22 began conducting patrols in May 1944 just a few weeks before the liberation of Rome. While their vessels were all built in New Orleans, the crews came from all over the United States—from such places as New York, New Mexico, Maine, Illinois, and Texas. By chance, out of the hundreds of men in the unit, upwards of 20 joined their ‘hometown hero” Higgins 78-foot motor torpedo boats in hailing from the city of New Orleans. Now, they were over 5,000 miles from home and at war.

The vessel was based on Corsica and later in Saint-Tropez, France. PT-305 and her sisters of Ron 22, policed enemy waters, most commonly at night. PT-305 took part in 77 offensive patrols, supported two amphibious invasions, and destroyed three enemy vessels during her run in the Mediterranean. The small boat with a powerful punch performed admirably, nearly always deftly avoiding catastrophe. But there was the one day, while pulling into port, that PT-305 struck the dock and sent nearly everyone sprawling. The crew, unhurt after the collision, decided to nickname PT-305 the “USS Sudden Jerk.”

When the war in Europe came to a close, the Navy retained the combat veteran vessels of Ron 22 for possible redeployment to the Pacific. When Japan surrendered, such boats had little use, with PT-305 sold, as surplus, for the incredibly small sum of $10 in 1948. With new names such as Scalloping 1 and Miss Point View the former warrior hauled New York tourists, plied the seas for prized fish, and helped bring oysters to market. Over the years, she became worn, battered, and even cut down in length.

The National WWII Museum worked to bring this rare and locally significant war-horse home in the early 2000s. In 2007, a deal with the Defenders of America Naval Museum in Galveston, Texas, brought the remains of PT-305 back home.

In the years that followed, hundreds of Museum volunteers—including some veterans and former Higgins workers—stepped forward to return PT-305 to her wartime glory. The daunting task took ten years and more than 120,000 hours of labor. Thanks to the skills of many, both local New Orleanians and interested parties from all over the United States, PT-305 was ready to return to Lake Pontchartrain in 2017.

PT-305 Restoration

Years of work went into putting PT-305 back into World War II condition. The National WWII Museum Collection

More than 70 years after her last hometown cruise, PT-305 was once again roaring over the waters just a few hundred yards from where she was conceived in 1943. Instead of her original wartime mission she was taking hundreds of passengers on the ride of a lifetime.

The plans always accounted for a return to the Kushner Restoration Pavilion —a building outfitted specifically to house PT-305. In 2022, the vessel came up the Mississippi River via barge, was rolled through the streets of New Orleans, and nestled back into The National WWII Museum’s campus.

As the centerpiece of the Museum’s STEM Innovation Gallery, PT-305 once again looks ready to set sail in the Mediterranean Sea with a complement of four deadly 2,000-pound torpedoes used for hunting enemy shipping. She is one of only a small handful of war-era PT boats left in the world today and now, finally, she is home for good.
