Superyachts are getting super huge . The race to flex one’s wealth has been heating up, with palatial ships aiming to outdo each other in size. Six years ago, German megayacht builder Lürssen delivered Azzam , the largest privately owned yacht in the world at 590 feet in length, to its owner (thought to be United Arab Emirates President Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan), although it first set sail more than a year later. That yacht one-upped previous record holder Roman Abramovich’s Bloom + Voss–built  Eclipse,  by almost 60 feet. Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones just bought a 357-foot yacht that’s longer than a football field and comes with two helicopter pads (yet it’s relatively compact compared to Eclipse and Azzam ).

But South Korean yacht designer Chulhun Park is aiming to outdo them all—his latest design, the Valkyrie, promises to be the largest superyacht in the world at a whopping 751 feet.

The Valkyrie ,  however, will be off-limits to potential billionaire clients—this superyacht will be open to the public, according to CNN . The yacht is still in the design phase, but if built, the Valkyrie could house 52 guests in 26 cabins with 92 crew members in 46 cabins when it sets sail. If the ship is docked, Park says it could accommodate many more visitors.

Park conceived the idea for his new superyacht as part of his thesis project at the Royal College of Art in London, where he was earning his master’s in design. The project was supported by Monaco-based yacht designers Palmer Johnson Yachts —where Park used to work before moving on to Latitude Yachts. Park designed the yacht above the waterline, while Palmer Johnson took care of the engineering and design down below. Valkyrie ‘s  construction is tallying an estimated cost of $800 million—that’s $180 million more than  Azzam .

Based on sketches at Chulhun.com , the superyacht will have a helicopter landing pad (naturally), a casino, a club, a sky lounge, a beach club, two restaurants, two theaters, a shop, and more. Since it’s not built yet, you will have to wait to find out how much a journey on board will cost you, but with only 26 cabins (and a hefty production cost), you can expect this to blow a high-end cruise out of the water—and come with a price tag to match.

Raising Bayesian superyacht ‘will take up to two months’

Raising the Bayesian superyacht from the seabed off Sicily would cost around €15 million and take six to eight weeks, one of the world’s leading maritime salvage experts has said.

Nick Sloane, the South African salvage engineer who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise ship after it capsized off Tuscany in 2012 with the loss of 32 lives, said around 40 highly-trained divers would be required.

Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah , Jonathan Bloomer, the Morgan Stanley International bank chairman, and his wife Judy, Chris Morvillo, the Clifford Chance lawyer and his wife Neda and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef, died when the yacht sank at around 5am on Monday.

A large platform would have to be constructed and towed half a mile out to sea, above the spot where the vessel sank in an intense storm .

The luxury yacht’s aluminium mast – the tallest of its kind in the world when the boat was constructed – would need to be cut off and removed prior to the Bayesian being lifted to the surface.

The floating platform would support giant cranes, which would be able to raise the vessel from a depth of 165ft – but very slowly.

If the boat is pulled up too quickly, it could break up under the huge pressure of water inside it, Mr Sloane told La Repubblica newspaper.

“This is the most delicate part of the operation and needs to be done very, very slowly, because the Bayesian is full of water,” he said.

“The important thing is that when the yacht reaches the surface the sea must be calm. So they’ll have to carefully check the weather forecasts. The yacht should be recovered exactly as it is, in one piece, with the aim of maintaining it as intact as possible.”

“I would say it would cost up to €15 million but possibly you could do it for a bit less. The recovery operation would take six to eight weeks. It could be completed before the second half of October.”

Recovering the wreck could help investigators find evidence that could shed light on how it sank in a matter of minutes after being hit by a waterspout or tornado.

Although he was feted in Italy for his successful refloating of the Costa Concordia, the South African stressed that he has not been approached in an official capacity about raising the Bayesian .

Italy has more than enough expertise and technical capacity to carry out the operation, he said. But he has been discussing how the operation might unfold with Italian divers who were involved in the Costa Concordia recovery .

There are parallels between the two wrecks. Italian coast guard and fire service divers exploring the cramped confines of the Bayesian this week as they searched for bodies encountered “a miniature Concordia,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the Italian fire service.

They could only stay under water for 12 minutes and had to negotiate a pitch-black world of tilted surfaces, floating debris and dislodged furniture , he said.

Italian authorities have so far said nothing officially about when, or even if, the Bayesian will be recovered from the seabed and brought to shore.

The Concordia operation took months of careful planning and dangerous underwater work, whereas bringing up the much smaller yacht would be a quicker operation, albeit still fraught with technical challenges.

The 114,500-tonne Concordia, about twice the size of the Titanic, was eventually towed to Genoa to be broken up for scrap two and a half years after it capsized. The effort to raise and salvage it was the largest operation of its kind ever attempted, and cost around €1.5 billion.

Valkyrie, the world's greatest superyacht of the future?

Valkyrie is a superyacht 229 m long and 30 m wide. If it were built, it would be the largest private yacht in the world, but for the moment it is only the concept of Chulhun Park, designer of the Latvian shipyard Latitude Yachts. Designed for a private owner, it would also be open to the public on certain spaces.

The yachting world is a dream come true and superyacht designers have understood this. Concepts and projects regularly emerge under the pencil strokes of these imaginative designers.

If today the world's largest superyacht is Azzam - 180 m long - it could well lose its status. South Korean designer Chulhun Park designed the Valkyrie, a huge yacht 229 m long and 30 m wide. If this project is only an exercise in style to date, its designer thinks he can one day bring it to life and evoke the interest of potential buyers. An interest that still costs the trifles of some 800 million dollars?!

Chulhun Park developed Valkyrie as part of his final year project at the Royal College of Art in London. An 8-month project, supported by the Monegasque manufacturer Palmer Johnson Yachts , which also employed the young designer at the end of his studies. The yacht was therefore designed on the trimaran hull developed and patented by the Monaco-based shipyard . A choice of hull that reduces drag at high speed and provides more stability .

If the hull is already existing, the dead works are totally invented by the designer. Unlike traditional designs with an imposing stepped superstructure and a white hull colour, Chulhun Park has opted for a steel or aluminium hull and a grey carbon fibre superstructure and non-rectilinear shapes.

If this project was to be visually unique, its main characteristic is that it created a floating entertainment space open to the public. "Most people consider superyachts to be the exclusive property of billionaires, a way of showing their wealth. But with Valkyrie, I have added public spaces, where everyone can go like a shopping mall, restaurants, bars, theatre, casino, art gallery or convention centre. A way to satisfy visitors and generate profits" explains the designer.

49 m taller than the current largest private yacht in the world, Valkyrie will accommodate 52 guests in 26 cabins and 92 crew members in 46 cabins. A bridge will be entirely reserved for the owner and its average speed will be 25 knots.

If you’ve seen one superyacht, you’ve seen them all. At least that’s how it can feel when so many of the world’s largest privately owned seafaring vessels play it safe, offering little more than slight tweaks on the same cookie-cutter look. Hoping to break from those stale conventions, one ambitious designer has introduced a strikingly innovative concept for what would not only be the biggest luxury superyacht in the world but also undeniably the boldest as well.

It’s called Valkyrie , and its purpose is to shatter preconceived notions about the size, shape, and fundamental purpose of superyachts. The long-gestating project of Chulhun Park, chief designer for Riga, Latvia–based Latitude Yachts, the Valkyrie project aims to be a 751-foot floating entertainment hub, unlike anything the world has ever seen. If completed, it would shatter the superyacht length record of 591 feet currently held by Azzam , a boat that's believed to be owned by Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates.

The 751-foot-long Valkyrie would far surpass the length of the 591 foot-long yacht, Azzam , which currently holds the record for the world's biggest superyacht.

At first glance, Valkyrie seems to take its aesthetic cues from science fiction rather than existent superyacht design tropes. Its sleek yet surprising shape was inspired by deconstructivism, a postmodernist architectural movement that eschews harmony and symmetry in favor of warped unconventionality. Park says his interest in the work of deconstructivists, like that of the late Zaha Hadid, predates his career in yacht design, which might explain why he was able to effortlessly integrate its aesthetic hallmarks into the shape of Valkyrie . “Having seen too many conventional white yachts, which were vertically stacked like wedding cakes, I was determined to design a visually unique yacht which would stand out from a fleet,” Park says. “I was interested in manipulating a structure’s surface to create non-rectilinear shapes, which appear to distort and dislocate elements of shape.”

Valkyrie ’s exceptional design is made possible by cutting-edge tech that grants Park additional freedom and flexibility to play around with the yacht’s shape without sacrificing performance. If created, Valkyrie will incorporate a steel or aluminum Trimaran hull (in other words, a multihull vessel) first engineered by Palmer Johnson Yachts (where Park previously worked as a senior exterior designer) for use in its super sport series. This unique below-the-waterline construction minimizes drag during high-speed travel and boosts fuel efficiency by up to 50 percent, all while creating up to 30 percent of additional interior and exterior space. Additionally, the extensive use of Palmer Johnson’s carbon construction technology throughout Valkyrie reduces weight and allows for better sight lines from inside the boat.

Valkyrie would serve as a multifaceted space where guests can come aboard to explore things like a casino, theater, gallery, restaurants, and convention space. Park’s design will also incorporate elements such as “large windows and open areas” that offer the chance to experience the beauty and luxury of nature in addition to the onboard amenities. This concept achieves the dual purposes, which will be good news for anyone ready to spend the estimated $800 million price tag for owning the vessel.

Though Valkyrie is still in its conceptual stage, Park emphasizes that there is “genuine interest” in the project. And with ongoing advancements in design and technology, the largest, most distinctive superyacht might be ready to welcome you on board sooner than you’d think.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht

PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down. 

Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.   

Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.

“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said. 

It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said. 

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said. 

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in. 

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair. 

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found . 

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday. 

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help. 

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said. 

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water. 

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank. 

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid. 

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

The 750-foot ‘Valkyrie’ Will One Day Be The World’s Largest Superyacht

Although it has the look of an intergalactic spaceship, this is 750-feet (229 metres) of pure superyacht luxury. Once construction is complete, yachting will be open to the public – thought with a hefty price tag, we can safely assume.

While it is still in its design stage, the superyacht is being referred to as ‘Project Valkyrie.’ The yacht is far more than just an entry into the record books – a casino, movie theatre, club, art gallery, and convention hall will all be found onboard. Chulhun Design has created a striking 229m/751ft giga yacht concept known as VALKYRIE, packed with luxury amenities and an exterior that has a carapace-like appearance that looks as if it has come straight out of science fiction.

The concept images show a deceptively sleek appearance for the chrome-coloured hull and superstructure, where dark glazing covers multiple floors and creates a svelte stern, concealing the large open areas with flowing forms. The mega yacht covers seven decks, with the entire top deck dedicated to the wheelhouse and the below decks boasting an array of amenities more often seen aboard a luxury cruise ship than even a mega yacht.

The exterior styling showcases three extensive foredecks that a perfect for hosting hundreds of guests at dockside events, or for outdoor exercise and relaxation while cruising.

Extensive glazing curves down the aft of the topmost four decks, providing panoramic 180 views in all weather conditions. The lower decks host a helipad, an alfresco lounge and dining area and a swim platform that acts as an extension to the beach club.

To match her incredible length, motor yacht VALKYRIE would also have an expansive beam of 30m/98ft to ensure that there is plenty of room on board for amenities such as the salon and spa, beach club, casino, restaurant, exhibition hall, three-floor theatre and secondary theatre. A performers’ waiting room is also included in the design, and that is to say nothing of the accommodation for guests and crew, which includes an Owner’s salon and suite.

A pair of 17Mw engines would give her a top speed of 25 knots, a cruising speed of 20 knots and at an economical 16 knots would give M/Y VALKYRIE a staggering range of 10,000 nautical miles.

From a thesis project to the largest yacht in the world: that's the story of the Project Valkyrie Superyacht. Designed by Chulhun Park with support from Palmer Johnson, the vessel measures 229 meters, with accommodations for 52 guests and 92 crew members. Meant to be more than just a billionaire's plaything, it also offers public spaces in the form of a casino, theater, mall, restaurants, and exhibition halls. Investigators seek answers to why luxury superyacht Bayesian sank in storm

Italian and British authorities are trying to determine why a 184-foot luxury superyacht sank in a violent storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday. Divers have recovered six bodies.

According to witnesses, the sailing ship Bayesian was struck by a waterspout while at anchor. It sank quickly in 160 feet of water about half a mile off the Sicilian coast near Porticello around 5 a.m. local time.

Twelve guests and 10 crew members were aboard the ship when it sank. Fifteen people were rescued. The body of one man, the ship’s chef, was found later that day.

Names of the deceased have not been officially released by Italian police, but those aboard included British tech mogul Mike Lynch, the ship's owner, and his daughter Hannah, 18.

Mike Lynch's body has been recovered , USA TODAY reported. His daughter's body was recovered early Friday .

The Bayesian was built in Italy by Perini Navi and delivered in 2008. It was one of 10 models and sailed under the United Kingdom flag.

With the recovery of Lynch and his daughter, a total of seven bodies were found after the sinking:

• Christopher Morvillo, an attorney from New York
• Neda Morvillo, his wife
• Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley executive
• Judy Bloomer, his wife
• Recaldo Thomas, the ship's chef

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among those rescued.

Lynch was acquitted on fraud charges in June stemming from the sale of his tech company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard. Prosecutors said Lynch and another executive misrepresented Autonomy revenue.

The yacht trip around southern Italy was planned as a celebration of Lynch's acquittal.

What are investigators focusing on.

The Bayesian is the type of ship that’s “unsinkable,” says Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that built the vessel, reported the Independent. Costantino said it was one of the safest boats in the world.

Italian authorities in the town of Termini Imerese Sicily, and the U.K.'s Marine Accident Investigation Branch are investigating the sinking. The ship's captain, James Cutfield, has been questioned.

Early reports said the ship's 240-foot aluminum mast had broken, but Italian divers later said the vessel was intact , according to The Wall Street Journal.

Investigators will try to determine whether the ship's crew followed safety procedures, which include closing portholes and hatches ahead of the storm's arrival.

Superyachts seem to know no bounds – or financial constraints – when it comes to extravagance, and now another design has come along to blow the others clean out of the water.

Envisaged by the Valkyrie Project, the whopping 751-foot-long vessel would dwarf the world's current largest superyacht Azzam – a 590-foot-long boat thought to be owned by former United Arab Emirates President Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan that is said to have cost more than $500 million. And it makes multibillionaire Jeff Bezos' 417-foot "Koru" yacht look like a mere dinghy. Valkyrie is set to be kitted out with entertainment features including an on-board casino, theatre, art gallery and convention hall.

Speaking to CNN Travel, Chulhun Park, the South Korean designer behind Valkyrie, said he was "determined to design a visually unique yacht which would stand out from a fleet". But he insists the luxury ship isn't yet another example of an ultra-rich vanity project, a case of the haves and the have-yachts. Apparently, you won't need to be a billionaire to hitch a ride.

"Most people consider superyachts to be exclusive properties of billionaires to display their wealth. However, such a hub would essentially be floating architecture utilized by the public," he claimed.

Park took inspiration from deconstructivism, an architectural movement dating back to the 1980s that championed asymmetrical shapes and non-linear styles. Speaking to SuperYachts.com, Park said: "Having seen too many conventional white yachts, which were vertically stacked like wedding cakes, I was determined to design a visually unique yacht which would stand out from a fleet. I was interested in manipulating a structure's surface to create non-rectilinear shapes, which appear to distort and dislocate elements of shape."

Valkyrie would accommodate 52 guests in 25 cabins alongside an extra 92 crew members in 46 cabins – and could hold many more day visitors besides. If built, Valkyrie will incorporate a steel or aluminium Trimaran hull first engineered by Palmer Johnson Yachts – where Park previously worked as a senior exterior designer – to minimise drag during high-speed travel and boost fuel efficiency by 50% while creating up to 30% additional interior and exterior space.

And despite its hefty price tag of an estimated $800 million, Park emphasises that there is "genuine interest" in the project and could welcome passengers one day soon.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

• A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
• British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
• Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph . 
• Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
• A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

Valkyrie is a custom motor yacht launched in 2001 by Crescent Yachts and most recently refitted in 2011.
