24m Drettmann Explorer Yacht to be revealed at Düsseldorf yacht show

The new 24 metre Drettmann Explorer Yacht will be revealed at the Düsseldorf yacht show next year (January 23-31). Ordered in 2013, it is the first of a new range of 24 to 45 metre explorer yachts from the German designers.

The 175 ton steel and aluminium yacht has been built at  Acico Yachts in the Netherlands and is the first of Drettmann’s explorer yachts to be built in Europe rather than in Taiwan. Exterior design for the series comes from Focus Yacht Design .

Explorer yachts need to be able to travel long distances without refuelling. With this in mind the Drettmann Explorer 24 has an impressive range of 5,000 nautical miles.

The yacht is propelled by an economical diesel-electric pod drive that takes up less space than the conventional shaft driven system. This innovative system is capable of taking her to a top speed of 13 knots.

Commenting on this type of propulsion, Claudia Drettmann said that it “makes sailing much more fun, makes the vessel perfectly easy to steer, reduces maintenance and optimises energy utilisation.”

The garage houses a Williams 445 tender, while a SeaDoo RXP personal watercraft is carried on the foredeck.

This layout frees up space for a large beach club area and sauna next to the bathing platform. Three cabins for the owner and guests are set amidships for comfort during voyages.

Drettmann Yachts has had great success at the Düsseldorf show in the past. The Elegance Series was introduced in 1998 with seven sales at the show while Bandido yachts were a success at the 2007 show, with one yacht being sold before the show had even opened.

With a beam of just over 30 feet and an interior volume of 499 GT, the B-50 also offers a generous amount of space onboard. The yacht can accommodate 12 guests across six large cabins. Located on a private deck, the scenic owner’s suite provides sweeping 270-degree views and opens to an outdoor lounge with a Jacuzzi.

The Jacuzzi isn’t the only water feature, either. The main deck aft centers around a striking 20-foot swimming pool that can double as a helipad. How? After all the water is drained, the bottom of the pool is raised until it is flush with the deck. This creates a touch-and-go landing pad that can facilitate comings and goings via chopper. The aft deck is also fitted with fold-out bulwarks that can be opened to create a larger lounge area.

Other notable amenities on the B-50 include a sheltered outdoor cinema at the rear of the upper deck, a gym with a fold-out balcony on the lower deck, a side garage with enough room for a tender and Jet Ski, and a hidden anchor deck with a drop-down hatch.

Drettmann’s new 24 M Explorer Yacht

Even in the yacht scene which is well used to highlights, wonders never cease: the new Drettmann Explorer Yacht (DEY) can undoubtedly be classified as one of these wonder, simply because hardly any other new yacht combines luxury, comfort and innovation in such an exclusive way.

And as exclusiveness has been a traditional feature of Drettmann Yachts for more than 45 years, the DEY was no longer built in Taiwan like its predecessors, but in two countries which are regarded as the cradle of shipbuilding: the Netherlands and Germany. With 10,000 ships sold and 1500 new-build yachts, Drettmann once again delivers a quality that lives up to the acclaimed “Made in Germany” standards in every single detail.

Of the numerous innovations on board, the most important is probably the diesel-electric POD drive system. True progress that has a noticeably positive impact on many different aspects: from sailing comfort and optimum energy utilisation, to minimum vibrations, efficient use of space and ease of service. This makes the DEY sensationally easy to steer, with a joystick which enables the owner to handle even difficult mooring manoeuvres himself.

Energy utilisation is significantly improved, whilst vibrations have been substantially reduced. The new drive system means that the engine room can be located under the forecastle deck. This frees up space on the lower deck, so that the guest cabins are now closer to the beach club (with sauna and lounge area) and the sea.

Pure pleasure, inside and out

The new line of the Drettmann Explorer Yacht with its striking appearance –compact on the outside and extraordinarily spacious on the inside due to offset levels –was created for owners, who above all want to own a proper ship. A vessel, whose elevated prow will repel splash water and waves far away. However, also a ship that leaves nothing to be desired in regard to storage space, for instance for diving equipment and jet skis. And additionally a vessel, which on the inside enables a stylish and comfortable life onboard due to its exclusive interior, selected by Claudia Drettmann in cooperation with the designer Birgit Schnaase. A particular highlight is the large, pleasant eating and living area on the main deck. On top of the 54 m2 large flying deck there is an outside steering position, two couch areas, a bar with a BBQ and storage for deck chairs.

The interior design by Claudia Drettmann in cooperation with Birgit Schnaase makes optimum use of the available space to celebrate a modern look combined with urban casualness, with accentuating eye-catchers such as a blood-red bar counter and Italian furniture. Drettmann has paid meticulous attention to these and all other functional or stylistic details, testing them again and again to guarantee that the owner can enjoy a perfect yacht experience for years on end.

“To us, it is of prime importance not merely to claim the qualities of the new Explorer Generation, but to back these claims with experience. POD technology, for example, has already been successfully used in professional shipping for a long time. But we are the first company to use this system in a 24-metre yacht. This is a world premiere – and just one of many innovations of which we are justly proud,” says CEO Albert Drettmann.

This is yacht design that captivates at first glance: the DEY exterior by Focus Yacht Design, with taupe hull and white superstructure, conveys a masculine, sporty, voluminous image, simply made for long trips on all the seven seas, for water sports and diving.

Drettmann Explorer Yacht to launch at Düsseldorf show

The German yard has announced that it will be launching the 24M Drettmann Explorer Yacht at next month’s Boot Dusseldorf boat show

The 2016 Boot Dusseldorf boat show will see plenty of product launches, but few will be as imposing or eye-catching as the new Drettmann Explorer Yacht.

This 24m displacement cruiser is due to make its debut on January 23 at the Messe Dusseldorf exhibition centre.

Arguably the most remarkable feature is the engine set-up, which Drettmann describes as a diesel-electric pod drive.

Co-founder Claudia Drettmann said of the new system: “It is based on tried-and-tested technology, but this is the first time that it has been used in a yacht of this class anywhere in the world.”

This should make for a more comfortable and economical ride, she claims, as well as freeing up more space for on-board features, such as a beach club area with sauna and lounge.

Founded in Bremen in 1970, Drettmann has gone on to launch more than 10,000 vessels, and its current model line-up ranges from 20m to 45m.

Albert Drettmann adds: “We have a sufficient basis for comparison to say that our new yachts are state-of-the-art today and will be the classics of tomorrow.”

1970 founding of the world wide success of Drettman Yachts was laid - all began with Dierk & Traute Drettmann who set up a small business selling pre owned boats. 1989 their son Albert followed their footsteps together with his wife Claudia and took over the management of the company. In 1993 building of the Elegance- and Bandido Yachts range started. Three futher brands, the DDC, DEY and DMY followed and reached international acclaim. The hull was constructed of steel plates 8 mm. 6 mm and 5 mm. over T simple frames of 140 x 5 / 80 x 6 mm and 130 x 5 / 90 x 6 mm size with minimum spacing of 840 mm. At topsides, surfaces can be seen at fair condition. Superstructure surfaces were in fair and sound condition without cracks and welding problems. Bulwark at the fore side has stopped at the fore side of the superstructure and should continue to bow end to be completed. The 2 meter square surface of inner side of the roll bar structure has not been completed to finalize welding.

The superstructure was constructed of aluminum alloy plates 6 mm and 5 mm. over T simple frames of 60 x 5 / 40 x 5 mm and over T simple beams of 120 x 5 / 60 x 5 mm size with minimum spacing of 840 mm.

Welding details; randomly welding joints has been visually controlled and none of the defects listed. The hull bottom under waterline has been protected with epoxy primer. The steel surfaces above waterline have their protective original primer from the steel plate supplier. All surfaces, needed to be sand blasted and epoxy primer applied. Aluminum surfaces need to be completed than after cleaning, they should be epoxy primed before filling and firing process.

Sun deck: Sun deck has a roll bar with a sun and weather protection of 29 m2 area. Roll bar has a height from the sundeck surface to lower side of the roll bar which is 2080 mm. Sun deck has 76 m2 floor area. This section is structurally completed and in needed to be primed, filled and painted. Floors should be covered with desired floor covering layers.

Bridge Deck: Bridge deck is made out of aluminum sheets as being part of super structure. It has a forward deck area of 56 m2. Aft side deck area is 44.20 m2. Side walk area on both sides which connect forward and aft bridge deck has 18 m2 area. This side walk has 750 mm width. This walk area has a narrow location for passing under roll bar side supports and it is needed to be re-planned and corrected. Bulwark construction has stopped towards bow side and it is needed to be completed before surface preparation process. Bulwark height is 700 mm.

On Bridge deck the windlass winch and chain tubes are not connected to its place. The fairleads, cleats and scuppers are not located and installed yet.

Main Deck: main deck has made out of sleet plates and has a aft side area of 22 m2. Main deck side walking area is 28.50 m2. With a 1150 mm. width. It has interior section with fore side of 67.50 m2 and aft side of 53 m2. That is divided with a bulkhead. The interior height is 2300 mm.

Lower deck: Lower deck is seem structurally well and sound. The location of bow thruster and stabilisators are supported with extra steel sheet. And, they are not yet installed and their holes and tubes are not done.

Engine and rudder room: There are engine beds and foundations are ready. And, no holes for the stern tube installation and rudder stock penetrations are ready.

Bilge: structurally bilge is completed. The structural tank panels are fitted and they need to be completed with manholes and inside special painting regarding to their holding fluid. On tanks, bulwarks and hull bottom, there are no pipe penetration, recor and fittings are arranged or installed.

Summary: This hull and superstructure shells which are connected to each other with bi-metal ribbons are well and sound for to be continue their construction to the finished sea vessel. There is no equipment has been found on or around the shell to be installed. This shell will still need some construction, shaping and welding processes to be completed. In order to do required jobs, this shell needs to be shifted to a boat yard to be finalized its construction to be ready for surface preparations. Then fitting-out processes would go on at the same period. I may estimate that this shell will need still 1 year of concentrated work in a well-organized boatyard. Then, this vessel would be competent motor yacht for her intended service.

New standards

The wealth of innovative and ingenious solutions has obviously struck the right chord in the market: the keel of the first DMY is about to be laid, no fewer than two vessels from the new Explorer Yacht series have already been sold in 2013 and other negotiations are in process.

Needless to say, Albert Drettmann is delighted that Drettmann Yachts has picked up speed so soon. Increasing interest, however, means lower capacities for building new yachts. Drettmann has accordingly been keeping its eyes open for potential new partners all over the world, for people who share our ideas and can live up to our exacting technical standards.

This search has been successful – and has taken us back to the Netherlands once again and also back to Asia :

The Dutch shipyards are regarded as market leaders in international yachting circles, and back in the early days of the company, Drettmann already cooperated successfully with Neptunus Shipbuilding in the Netherlands. By the year 1998, Drettmann had commissioned and sold more than 700 yachts with lengths of up to 20 metres by the yard.

Nor is Asia “new territory” for the Drettmanns. For almost 20 years, up until 2010, Drettmann collaborated with the Taiwanese yard “Horizon”.

From the initial figure of 90 employees, Drettmann raised the workforce to a total of 1300 and, in its heyday, purchased 80% of the yard’s production. Drettmann commissioned a total of more than 300 Motor and Explorer Yachts from its own well-known “ Elegance ” and “ Bandido ” lines, in a class of up to 55m, and found satisfied owners for them on behalf of the yard.

The Bremen company gradually evolved into the world’s most success-ful yacht vendor in this class.

The next chapter in this success story is now to be written in cooperation with shipyards in the Netherlands and Asia and – if all goes according to plan – will surpass the company’s previous performance.

“Our new partner yards belong to the top players in the high-end shipbuilding market. They have already delivered proof of their experience, skilled craftsmanship and quality awareness for many years,” explains Albert Drettmann.
