Monaco Yacht Show: 7 Yacht Interiors That Will Steal the Show

Room on yacht with intricate blue stone flooring and walls

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Sitting area inside a yacht

An oversized chandelier defines the space in the informal dining room aboard Ahpo .

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Interiors of main deck lounge on a yacht

Blue accents channel the traditional nautical aesthetic.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Bar and seating area on a yacht

Modern and laid-back, Come Together is effortlessly cool.

Amels, Come Together

Built in the Netherlands by Amels with interiors by London-based Winch Design, the 197-foot Come Together has soft and laid-back beach-y vibes with a dose of Southern California cool. Elements like bleached oaks, woven linen fabrics, cabinetry with natural coconut shell, and hair-on-hide leathers all unite to bring the natural world aboard this chic ship.

Stairs leading down to a seating area on a yacht

Crisp and clean, the interiors of Be Cool are to-the-point in a refreshing way.

Swan 98, Be Cool

There’s a fleet of around a dozen large sailing yachts on display at this year’s yacht show in the dedicated Sailing Yacht Area. One of the most notable new launches of the bunch is Swan 98 Be Cool  by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan. The clean and crisp interior hull design by Genovese architect Misa Poggi embraces graceful nautical style and Scandinavian practicality with navy linen and cotton fabrics, dark oak, and handsome tobacco-hued leather.

10 Abandoned Cities With Eerily Beautiful Architecture

Kokomo ’s interiors will speak to the minimalist.

Sunreef, Kokomo

Packed with cutting-edge green tech and ultralight solar panels, Sunreef’s newest catamaran  Eco 80 will be making waves at this year’s show. However, it’s the interiors of the 80-foot Kokomo (done in-house by Sunreef) that will impress the design lovers. Outfitted in cool and calm shades of white with rattan finishes and eucalyptus veneers, Kokomo is both on-trend and a complete classic.

Seating room with glassbottomed pool above it.

The glass-bottom pool is a highlight of the yacht.

Abeking & Rasmussen, B2

One of the largest vessels currently on the market, the 281-foot B2 by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen, will be showing off an ultra-chic over-$4-million interior refit just completed in July at this year’s show. Sprawling out over five decks, Winch Design has curated a serene floating sanctuary of indoor-outdoor living, the highlight of which is the main deck’s glass-bottom pool, stationed above the light-filled beach club lounge with fold-down balconies that extend the living space right to the water’s edge.

Seating area on a yacht

With dark wood, tubular steel accents, and black furnishings, the interiors of State of Grace could be described as a nautical take on the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Perini Navi, State of Grace

State of Grace by Italy’s Perini Navi is a gorgeous high-performance sailing sloop. It’s picture-perfect with polished teak decks, an ocean-blue hull, and billowing white sails. Inside is a study in midcentury-modern elegance with a split-level saloon and a spacious and full-beam owner’s suite with a hammam shower.

The Côte d’Azur meets the shores of Miami Beach at Monaco Yacht Club & Residences , the highly anticipated twelve-story enclave of just thirty-nine luxurious waterfront residences and a private marina slated for completion Fall 2021.

We sat down with Bernardo Fort-Brescia , founding principal of the award-winning international architecture firm, Arquitectonica , to learn more about his design inspiration for the nautically-themed, boutique Bayfront condominium.

At just 12 stories, how did the boutique nature of Monaco Yacht Club & Residences inspire your design?

The scale of the building lends itself to a more exclusive and private living experience. It allowed us to offer discreet arrival to the units, fewer residents per floor, and proximity to the water.

Did it present any unique challenges or opportunities?

The challenge is always how to ensure all units face the water. That is the greatest asset south Florida offers. The broad frontage and favorable ratio of width to depth of the site allow the building to be situated parallel to the water's edge that provides an opportunity for increased sightlines of the dramatic widening of the Intracoastal Waterway offering expansive views of a lagoon-like setting.

Monaco Yacht Club & Residences Mar2021 11

From vision and concept, can you describe your design process from the beginning?

We begin always seeking the perfect layouts. We think of the eventual user and the lifestyle expected of an urban resort like Miami Beach. If I had to define the feel it is best described as relaxed luxury. Another aspect is the connection with nature the spaces needed to flow to the terraces. Because of the amazing weather in Florida, exterior living is an important part of the living experience. Outdoor living is key to relaxed luxury.

What was your design aesthetic for Monaco Yacht Club & Residences ?

We thought the architecture had to have a nautical feeling. We wanted the residents to feel that they were on a luxury yacht because due to the proximity to the water one may not see land from an interior vantage point. Therefore, the idea of a yacht club emerged.

monaco yacht club interior

Where did you draw your design inspiration from?

I have always liked the coastal towns of the Italian Riviera and the sleek romantic designs of the yachts cruising the waterways. Yacht design has an aerodynamic aspect combined with warmth and elegance. This led us to combine white sweeping lines and warm tones that are reminiscent of the finest Italian yachts.

How did you adapt your design philosophy to the project?

Every project is unique to its place, purpose and scale. This project is unique and its low-slung proportions, fluid horizontal lines, soft curved geometries resulted in a design fitting to the time and place. It still falls within our brand of waterfront modernity, but with a twist that makes it fitting for the personality of the program and place.

Now let’s talk about the role that Monaco Yacht Club & Residences’ location in Miami Beach’s coveted MiMo District played on the building design.

How will the building’s design reflect Miami and North Beach?

Miami Beach is a 20th-century resort. Its architecture is decidedly modern and referential to the principles of the early modern masters. Many of its buildings are also inspired in naval architecture and this building continues that tradition, but in a more contemporary way, with more glass, larger terraces, and more organic fluidity of its curves rather than more traditional rigid geometries.

monaco yacht club interior

Are there any design features unique to Miami that were incorporated?

The outdoors identifies Miami’s brand. This building takes that branding seriously by using the roof as a pool deck. That ensures exposure to the sun, the ocean breezes, and long-distance views from a very special vantage point. There is nothing more romantic than panoramic sunset views of the intercoastal and downtown Miami beyond.

How does the architecture reflect the building’s natural surroundings and blend of the outdoors with the interior living?

One of the important aspects of the design is the amount of glass between the living areas and terraces. The indoor-outdoor feeling is key to tropical Florida living, more so if that feeling flows beyond the habitable spaces, into the water and the horizon.

How did the building’s Bayfront location on one of the area’s last remaining waterfront parcels inspire the design?

Life on the water is both calming and invigorating. The opportunity to design on the water’s edge is always an inspiration for any project. There is an abundance of water activity with marinas along the seawalls and docks on both sides of the lagoon. The early morning rowers from the nearby rowing club crews add charm and dynamism to the project.

monaco yacht club interior

Explain how you incorporated the private marina into the project design. How did this amenity influence the overall property design?

The marina is integral to the design idea of the project and is part of the overall composition. The nautical design of the building continues into the actual naval architecture of the moored yachts in the marina along the waterfront of the site allowing the building and the yachts to coexist harmoniously.

Let’s discuss your method for working alongside an interior designer, such as Italian master architect Piero Lissoni on this project. How do your design philosophies complement each other? What do you think the end result will reflect?

We have worked with Piero before. We understand each other. We are both modernists, believers in the power of forms, of geometric purity, of the richness of materials within the boundaries of sophistication. Piero is the ultimate artist when it comes to interior design, his designs work well with our architecture. He blurs the boundaries between architecture and interior design so they appear seamless.

What is special or different about working on a project like MYC? What did you learn?

The beauty of this project is its human scale. Seldom in Miami Beach are there sites with this sense of an enclave for few residents who appreciate clean architectural lines and calm elegant interiors in a one-of-a-kind waterfront setting within the ultimate tropical global city that is Miami Beach.

The Making of… Yacht Club de Monaco

‘The Making of…’ is an opportunity to reflect on Foster + Partners’ completed projects and the process of making them.

Last month marked 10 years of the Yacht Club de Monaco, the symbolic centrepiece of Monaco’s harbour front. The nautical building features a clubroom and ballroom, a number of restaurants and a series of ‘cabins’ for visiting guests. The upper floors accommodate a range of event spaces, while the lower floors include a rowing club and sailing school, with sliding doors that encourage activities to spread out onto the quayside.

Patrick Campbell, Senior Partner, Annamaria Anderloni, Partner, and Ivan Kaye, Associate Partner, describe the process of designing and realising the project on a complex waterside site.

Designing a flexible city in miniature

At the start of the design process, Norman produced a powerful concept sketch that showed the yacht club as a city in miniature, with schools, parks, restaurants, a network of interior circulation ‘streets,’ and a hierarchy of public and private areas. He saw the project as a continuation of Monaco’s dense urban fabric and an important part of civic life.

Bringing together the various functional spaces under one roof required a creative and coordinated approach from our team. We began by understanding the needs of the different users, from the children attending the sailing school (that is part of Monaco’s teaching curriculum), to the members and corporate partners using the event spaces and social areas. The building had to be extremely flexible to allow these different spaces to function in unison. Terraces and external staircases were designed to accommodate different flows through the building, without disturbing the club’s private areas.

Harnessing a shared commitment to sustainability

To realise the project, we worked closely with the Palace, the government, and a specially appointed Yacht Club de Monaco Commission, as well as a local architect and specialist contractors. Collaborating with these different stakeholders was an exercise in organisation and communication. We held fortnightly meetings with representatives from all parties, to ensure everyone could contribute to – and feedback on – the developing scheme.

It was crucial that the Yacht Club de Monaco Commission could recognise themselves in the new building, which marked a new chapter in their 60-year history. Additionally, the principality and the Commission both shared the practice’s commitment to sustainability, which was reflected in the finalised design. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems are integrated within the building to meet the highest sustainability standards. Furthermore, the glazed harbour elevations are shaded by intricate louvres for protection from the sun and can be opened to naturally ventilate the building.

Working with a complex site

The site for the yacht club had to be created by reclaiming land from the Mediterranean Sea and extending the city’s existing marina eastwards. We began by removing rock from under the water and then created a new sea wall to drain the water away and start excavating. Although this was quite a challenging process, there is a long history of land reclamation projects in Monaco, and we worked with brilliant contactors who were experts in their field. Another challenge was making sure the bordering Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit could be used in July during the renowned event. This required us to pause construction, once a year for seven years, and restore the track before the race began.

During the construction phase, we created mock ups on site to review different options with the client. This allowed us to engage with the design in a more tangible way and make informed decisions about materials, finishes, and lighting. We mocked up sections of the north and south façades, the external balustrades and louvres, as well as the external decking to make our final selections.

Responding to Monaco’s nautical heritage

With the city and mountains on one side – and water on the other – it was essential that the yacht club made the most of its spectacular surroundings. Cascading terraces along the harbour offer unrivalled views of sailing races and inland over the Grand Prix circuit. The building also speaks to the principality’s nautical heritage, with strong horizontal lines, wide deck-like terraces, and masts that are visible out at sea during the regattas.

Our bespoke interiors capture the spirit of sailing and communicate the yacht club’s incredible history. The refined colour palette and custom furniture is inspired by Tuiga, the club’s much-loved flagship vintage yacht. Every detail was considered, from the caulking between the floorboards that creates continuity between inside and outside, to the display system that is integrated into the walls of the main spaces. Channels are recessed into the panelling to allow the objects and artworks to be presented in different ways and tell the evolving story of the club.

During our final days on site, we worked together to carefully unpackage and curate the yacht club’s extensive collection.

Celebrating ten years of Yacht Club de Monaco

Today, ten years since completion, the building still feels absolutely right for its context and has stood the test of time. Last month, over 150 people attended the 10-year anniversary celebrations, including the club’s president Prince Albert II.

It was a great privilege work on such an important project for Monaco, which has become the social heart of the principality.

The Yacht Club of Monaco: a prestigious club

The Yacht Club of Monaco is a world-renowned institution located on the French Riviera, in the heart of the Principality of Monaco. Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III, it now has more than 2,500 members from more than 81 countries. The club is best known for its commitment to sailing, its fleet of luxury yachts and its large-scale events.

An iconic building designed by Norman Foster

The architecture of the Yacht Club of Monaco is remarkable. Designed by British architect Norman Foster, it was inaugurated in 2014. The building, 22 meters high, 204 meters long, with 5,000 m² of interior space and 4,000 m² of terraces, is reminiscent of the transatlantic liners of the last century. It is located along the Quai Louis-II, at Port Hercule, and offers breathtaking views of the sea and the Rocher of Monaco. The building was built in compliance with HQE (high environmental quality) standards, limiting the environmental impact during construction and throughout the life of the structure. It is home to two of the Principality's most prestigious institutions: the Nautical Society and the Yacht Club of Monaco.

Elegant interior design

The interior of the Yacht Club of Monaco is just as remarkable as its exterior architecture. The interior spaces were decorated by renowned French decorator Jacques Grange. The club's rooms and terraces look like ship's decks, all made of European oak by local carpenters. The warm tones of wood are found in the interior spaces, creating an atmosphere of both tradition and modernity. The most prestigious areas of the club house – lounges, private areas and guest rooms – are furnished by Fendi Casa. The palette is made of soft pastels and shades of nature, from leather to sand to ivory.

A fleet of luxury yachts

A quarter of the world's 100 largest yachts fly the club's banner, which shows its prestige and fame. The club hosts large-scale sailing events, such as the Rolex Cup, the Monaco Classic Week (a unique gathering in the world of classic sailing and motor yachts, motor boats and 12' dinghies) and the Monaco Yacht Show, an annual international show dedicated to yachting that is held every year at the end of September in the enclosure of the Port Hercule of Monaco. The event, established in 1991, features an exhibition of exceptional yachts afloat as well as exhibition stands on the docks. It is now an iconic event popular with visitors who come to discover an incredible concentration of yachts available for purchase or charter.

Dining and relaxation at the Yacht Club of Monaco

The Yacht Club of Monaco offers its members a wide choice of quality activities and services, for an unforgettable experience. In addition to water activities, the Club also has facilities for dining and relaxing.

The Restaurant 1909, located on the terrace of the Club, offers refined and elegant cuisine. Executive Chef Renato Secchi and his team concoct tasty dishes, based on fresh and local products, to offer an unforgettable culinary experience. The terrace offers stunning views of the marina, for a romantic dinner or a sunny lunch.

The Sunrise, with its 180° panoramic terrace overlooking Port Hercule and the bay, is the ideal place to enjoy a buffet of appetizers and desserts, as well as a dish of the day, during summer lunches. The idyllic setting and tasty cuisine make it a popular place for members.

The Yacht Club de Monaco also has a wellness area to relax. Members can also enjoy the pool and gym equipped with modern machinery to keep fit.

Become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco: the application and sponsorship process

The Yacht Club of Monaco is a very selective club, reserved for a high-end clientele passionate about sailing and the nautical world. To become a member of the club, it is mandatory to follow a rigorous application and sponsorship process. All candidates must be presented by two sponsors, members of the YCM for more than one year. Once the application file has been completed and signed by the candidate and his two sponsors, it is examined by an admission committee chaired by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, president of the club. If the application is accepted, the official induction of the new member is done at a cocktail party in the presence of all members of the club. The sponsor plays a vital role in the admissions process as they are responsible for the new member they introduce. He must integrate him into the life of the club, introduce him to other members, involve him in the various activities, but also ensure that he adheres to the philosophy and values of the YCM. Only one application per sponsor may be proposed per session, and the Admissions Committee reserves the right to refuse it without notification.
