Designed for speed and space, superyacht builder Baglietto took a chance with Lucky Me

Building on speculation is risky. The easiest way to cut the risk is to build what everyone else is selling and compete on features, prices, and service. Italian superyacht builder Baglietto  didn’t hedge any bets when it built the house-named Baglietto 46m Fast  on speculation. What some may see as a gamble paid off when a European buyer bought the yacht in February and didn’t ask for any layout changes. The owner re-named the yacht  Lucky Me , which is a story itself.

Lucky Me is a fast displacement 46.3-meter yacht (just under 152 feet). She has a 26-knot maximum speed and 20-knot cruising speed with two MTU 4,615 horsepower diesel engines. Maximum cruising range is 1,000 nautical miles with a full 20,605-gallon fuel load. That works out to almost 21 gallons per nautical mile.

Fast displacement vessels have hulls that split the water as they move forward, whereas regular displacement hulls push the water. The 27 Wallyace , for example, is a displacement yacht. Another factor in Lucky Me’s relatively high speed is the hull has a draft under 7 feet, which means there’s less boat to drag through the water — the shallow draft also gives her access to shallow waters where other large yachts can’t go.

Each hull type has its advantages — it depends on what you want. Fast hulls are, you guessed it, faster than full displacement hulls. A full displacement yacht gives a more stable ride and provides more living and play space because the hull doesn’t come to a point at the bow. Lucky Me has stabilizer systems that work while underway and at anchor.

baglietto lucky me fast superyacht flotta 46mfast esterno 05

But her hull design isn’t why the Lucky Me was a risky build. First, ask what color a typical yacht should be, and most people would probably say “white.” Baglietto chose a lead gray shade for the hull. The hull is highly streamlined and quite narrow for such a large yacht. Atypical trapeze-shaped hull windows alternate with rectangular ones to emphasize the yacht’s narrow shape.

Most superyachts are built high, with multiple decks and elaborate superstructures. The Lucky Me’s superstructure, however, was designed to enhance performance with its compact shape. So not only does the boat’s hull have less water resistance than displacement hull designs, but the upper decks don’t have as much air resistance as typical superyachts. The Lucky Me has an aluminum hull and superstructure.

Lucky Me has four decks with room for 12 guests and 10 crew members. The top sundeck is for lounging and catching the sun. That’s also where the ship’s tender is stored. The upper deck has the wheelhouse and captain’s cabin, a pantry, passenger lounging areas, and outdoor dining.

baglietto lucky me fast superyacht flotta 46mfast interno 01

Lucky Me’s main deck has a beam-to-beam owner’s suite forward with a huge master bathroom, sleeping and lounging areas, and a private owner’s office. The ship’s galley is on on the same level, along with indoor guest dining and lounge areas

The lower deck has the crew’s quarters forward with four twin cabins, a single for the ship’s engineer, and a dinette. Four guest staterooms include two doubles and two rooms with twin beds and pullmans for a third person. All guest staterooms are en suite. The same level also houses the yacht’s engines, generators, and other mechanicals.

While the Lucky Me’s selling price is withheld, the new owner is a three-time Baglietto customer. His previous superyacht, a 136-foot Baglietto also named Lucky Me, is currently for sale for $10,823,670.

It's always frustrating when you get in bed at a reasonable time, then toss and turn for a hours before you actually sleep. The quality of that sleep is important too. If you're waking up multiple times during the night, you're likely not getting the quality REM cycle sleep that truly rejuvenates your body. If traditional remedies like herbal teas and noise machines just aren't helping, maybe it's time to try a modern solution. Enter the Apollo wearable.

Now we understand being a little skeptical. How can a bracelet on your wrist or ankle affect your sleep patterns? Certainly the answer to a better night's sleep can't be so simple. We considered these same things when we first heard of it. We'll dive deeper into the science behind the Apollo wearable, but suffice it to say that many people have experienced deeper, uninterrupted sleep while wearing one. A non-conventional approach to better sleep

While it's the Plus version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 that features in our look at the best tablets, the standard variety is still worth checking out. Saving your Dad the need to dig out their laptop or squint at a small phone screen, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 offers a large 10.5-inch LCD display and all the useful features you would expect. 128GB of storage means plenty of room for all your Dad's favorite apps as well as games too. A long-lasting battery and fast charging save him the need for a power source too often too.

This content was produced in partnership with Apollo Neuro. Stress, anxiety, and insomnia are all concerning things that just about everyone struggles with at one time or another. Maybe you can sleep, fending off insomnia, but you lack quality sleep and don’t feel rested in the morning. Or, maybe when it’s time to kick back and relax, you just can’t find a way to do so. There are many solutions for these issues, some work, and others don’t, but one unlikely area of support can be found in a modern, smart wearable.

Medicine is the obvious choice, but not everyone prefers to go that route. There is an answer in modern technology or rather a modern wearable device. One such device is the Apollo wearable, which improves sleep and stress relief via touch therapy. According to Apollo Neuro, the company behind the device, which is worn on your ankle, wrist or clipped to your clothing, it sends out waves of vibrations to help your body relax and reduce feelings of stress. It's an interesting new approach to a common problem that has typically been resolved via medicine, therapy, or other more invasive and time-consuming techniques. The way it utilizes those vibrations, uniquely placed and administered, to create a sense of peace, makes us ask, can it really cure what ails us? We’ll dig a little deeper into how it achieves what it does and what methods it’s using to make you feel better.

By Rebecca Bradbury   22 May 2017

The 46m/152ft superyacht ‘Lucky Me’ has joined the global charter fleet, and is available for charter this summer in Mediterranean destinations such as Croatia and Turkey .

Launched by Baglietto in summer 2016, Lucky Me is the first in the Italian yard’s Fast Line. With a cruising speed of 20 knots and jam-packed full of modern amenities, she will be perfect for zipping through the Mediterranean waters on a private yacht charter .

Whether island-hopping in Croatia, discovering the delights of Montenegro or cruising along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, Lucky Me is sure to turn heads thanks to her dynamic profile, with a receding bow and strong stern, and the striking lead grey colour of her hull.

Charterers, meanwhile, will be able to take in spectacular views of the region from her luxe deck areas, which are designed to allow those on board to be closer to the sea.

sumptuous seating on the main deck aft of superyacht ‘Lucky Me’

Get-together with your guests on the upper deck aft for a delicious alfresco dinner, enjoy cocktails in the lounging area on the main deck aft or head to the bow for an afternoon of sunbathing and relaxing in the Jacuzzi, which is hidden under a Bimini top.

As well as heading up the exterior styling, Francesco Paszkowski has created a luxurious interior aboard charter yacht Lucky Me, defined by jet black accents, contrasting white lacquered ceilings and warm shades of rosewood.

Sumptuous seating and a formal dining option make up the open-plan main salon, while a serene skylounge provides an intimate spot to unwind. Full-length windows ensure natural light floods into the motor yacht and keeps guests connected with the outside world.

After a day on the water, retreat into one of five staterooms, including a full-beam master suite with a private office, two VIP cabins and two twin cabins.

As well as heading up the exterior styling, Francesco Paszkowski has also created a luxurious interior aboard charter yacht Lucky Me

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

UK's vessel Bayesian

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

Divers of the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian Corps. of Firefighters, near Palermo

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

46m Baglietto motor yacht Lucky Me sold

The 46.3 metre Baglietto motor yacht Lucky Me has been sold with the buyer introduced by Juan Andrade of SuperYachtsMonaco .

Below are two VIP suites and two doubles and all cabins have entertainment centres, LCD television screens and en suite bathroom facilities. In addition, there is accommodation for seven crew in four cabins.

The main deck saloon is voluminous with allowance for ample comfortable seating and a small bar, and is separated from the dining room with formal dining for 12 guests by a retractable widescreen television set which can be concealed to create a stunning open plan area encouraging guest circulation and conversation. Inside Story of Billionaire Whose Luck Ran Out on Superyacht

Mike Lynch became one of the very few people to score an acquittal in his recent federal criminal case. But months later, that luck was wiped away.

Michael Daly

Special Correspondent

British entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Henry Nicholls/Reuters

Less than half of 1 percent of federal criminal cases end in an acquittal, so billionaire Mike Lynch and his co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, seemed to be the luckiest of unlucky men on June 6 this year, when they were found not guilty of fraud charges that could have landed them in prison for 25 years.

But two months after that ebullient moment on the 17th floor of the federal courthouse in San Francisco, their fortunes took a tragic turn.

On Saturday, Chamberlain suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a car while out for a run near his home in Cambridgeshire, England.

And then, on Monday, Lynch was among the six declared missing after a tornado-like waterspout sank the 184-foot sailing yacht Bayesian, as it was anchored a half-mile off the coast of Sicily. Lynch’s younger daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, who had recently earned a place at Oxford, was also missing. So was one of the defense attorneys in the case, former federal prosecutor Christopher Morvillo, and his wife.

The bodies of all those missing were recovered following a search by divers that lasted several days. Hannah’s body was brought ashore last, on Friday.

“In the course of 48 hours, I can’t process what has happened, but both of our clients, as well as Chris and his wife, are gone,” law partner Gary Lincenberg told Business Insider .

A paper trail indicates that the ill-fated yacht was owned by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares. It is named after the Bayesian inference, an approach to probability that was both the focus of Lynch’s PhD thesis and the underpinning of the software that made him Britain’s first tech billionaire.

The fact that Lynch ever got a doctorate from Cambridge was an improbability in itself. Lynch was the son of Irish immigrants; his mother was an intensive care nurse from County Tipperary, his father a firefighter from County Cork. They advised Lynch not to enter a profession that involved charging into burning buildings. Lynch was bright enough to secure scholarships at an exclusive private school and then a university. His genius was not so much in engineering itself, but in applying it.

He studied machine learning before it was fashionable, and co-founded a series of start-ups. One was Autonomy, which he sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11.7 billion after a secret meeting with its top executives in 2011. Hewlett-Packard’s then-CEO, Léo Apotheker, had hoped to turn it from a faltering computer hardware clunker into a high-profit software giant. He ended up taking the combined companies towards an $8 billion loss.

The new CEO, Meg Whitman, alleged that Lynch and others at Autonomy had cooked the books before the sale to make it look more profitable than it was. Hewlett-Packard sued Lynch in England in a civil fraud case in 2019, and he spent 20 days testifying. Then, in early 2022 , Justice Robert Hildyard issued a 1,700-page decision finding that Lynch and Autonomy had committed fraud. The Crown sought $4 billion in damages that are still pending.

At the same time, federal authorities in the U.S. sought to extradite Lynch on criminal charges. Lynch fought it for two years before he arrived in San Francisco in chains in May of 2023. He was released on $100 million bail and consigned to house arrest in a rental home with cameras installed in every room, and two armed guards on duty around the clock.

The judge in San Francisco was Charles Breyer, brother of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Charles had also overseen the trial of Lynch’s right-hand man, Autonomy Chief Financial Officer Sushovan Hussain, on fraud charges, in the same courtroom some months before. Hussain had been convicted. Lynch and Chamberlain seemed all but sure to suffer the same fate as their trial commenced in March of 2024.

British entrepreneur Mike Lynch leaves the High Court in London, Britain March 25, 2019.

British entrepreneur Mike Lynch leaves the High Court in London, Britain March 25, 2019.

The prosecution plodded through seemingly endless exhibits culled from 15 million financial documents and emails obtained for the case. One juror repeatedly dozed off.

“I know it’s not fascinating, but you’ve got to tell me whether you can stay awake for eight more weeks during this testimony,” Breyer said, according to The Times .

“That’s a negative,” the juror replied. “I can’t.”

The juror was replaced and the case crept on, until Lynch took the stand on his own behalf. He testified that his first job had been cleaning floors in the hospital where his mother works.

“I’m still a demon mopper,” he testified.

He also described being Irish in England during the conflict with the IRA.

“You had to learn to run fast,” he said.

When it came to the decision to sell Autonomy, he said Hewlett-Packard was so anxious to make the deal that it had offered double the usual takeover price margin.

“The normal premium on the London market was about 30 percent,” he said. “HP was offering 60 percent. That would be like trying to stop a herd of elephants in terms of shareholders agreeing to it.”

His attorney, Chris Morvillo, asked what the trial had been like for him.

“It’s surreal,” Lynch testified. “I’ve heard comments from people that just don’t paint the picture of the company that I and my colleagues and friends worked at for 15 years.”

Lynch added, “I’ve sat and watched a parade of witnesses that I’ve never met and some that I may have just shaken their hand, and I’ve heard about a series of transactions I have no involvement in.”

At the end of the 11-week trial, the jury acquitted Lynch and Chamberlain of all charges. Morvillo joined in their tearful exultation at being among the lucky very few.

Chamberlain’s luck ran out Saturday with a fatal encounter with a car. Lynch and Morvillo were on the Bayesian at 4:30 a.m. on Monday when the freak storm suddenly struck. An emergency flare went up into the darkness, but the boat had sunk by the time help arrived.

Fifteen of the passengers and crew were rescued, including Lynch’s wife. There was also a 1-year-old child, Sophia, and her mother, Charlotte Golunski, a partner at another Lynch venture, Invoke Capital. The mother recounted her ordeal to the Italian press, saying she had been on deck when the raging storm tore her child from her arms.

“For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” the mother told Giornale di Sicilia . “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

She summoned the fury of a mother.

“I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark. In the water, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of the others.”

A man in an inflatable lifeboat pulled her and Sophia to safety. They were joined by the child’s father. They were all lucky to be alive.

Mike Lynch’s remarkable luck, meanwhile, had sadly run out.

Irish survivor of yacht sinking is from family of adventurers who have known tragedy

superyacht lucky me

The Irish crew member who survived this week’s superyacht tragedy in Sicily comes from a wealthy family of sporting mavericks with a long history of adventure pursuits.

Chief Stewardess Sasha Murray, 29, was one of 15 survivors when the Bayesian dramatically sank on Monday taking seven lives, including that of owner Mike Lynch and his 18‑year-old daughter, Hannah.

Story continues below.

Ms Murray and her family have divulged no details of her lucky escape, during which she injured her leg.

Locals in Sligo were at first unaware she had been in Italy working on the vessel, but those who know the Murray family were not surprised to learn of Sasha Murray’s presence on the Bayesian superyacht .

‘We were all water babies,’ a family friend told the Irish Mail on Sunday this weekend. ‘It is no surprise to me that Sasha ended up on the water. It ran right through the whole family.’

Ms Murray and her family have divulged no details of her lucky escape, during which she injured her leg.

In fact, Ms Murray’s family on both sides are steeped in adventure sports and count scuba diving and water skiing champions in their ranks.

As a result, Ms Murray and her brother Killian grew up surrounded by adventure-seeking figureheads who appear to have inspired similar interests in the next generation.

But this adrenaline-fuelled lifestyle has also spawned a double tragedy for the extended Murray family.

On May 30, 1998, Ms Murray’s father Fionn was killed in an aircraft crash during an airborne treasure hunt.

Her maternal grandfather, Holger Schiller, who was piloting the light aeroplane, also perished in the accident at Sligo’s Cummeen Strand.

One witness, Michael Fletcher, who was walking on the beach, later described the aircraft’s final moments in an interview with the Sligo Champion newspaper: ‘As it came in closer it was clearly losing height.’

‘When it was directly above me I heard an almighty roar, like a tractor trying to start up and then, within a matter of seconds, it had nose-dived.’

‘There was very little I could do for the occupants. All I could do was say a prayer over them.’

Years later, in 2005, the family sued the US manufacturer and were awarded €550,000 in damages by the High Court.

Prior to his death, aged 33, Fionn Murray had been a champion racing driver. In a glittering career, he won every available title at the Formula Ford level and in 1990 took second place at the prestigious Brands Hatch Festival.

Chief Stewardess Sasha Murray, 29, was one of 15 survivors when the Bayesian dramatically sank on Monday taking seven lives, including that of owner Mike Lynch and his 18‑year-old daughter, Hannah.

He left behind his wife Jessica and their two children. At the time Sasha was just three and her brother was one. Both children would go on to enjoy motor racing from an early age.

They were also schooled in sailing and water sports at the Sligo Yacht Club where their grandfather Kevin Murray – Fionn’s father – was a renowned figure. Kevin was a well-known businessman in Sligo and the majority owner of Brooks Hanley builders’ providers.

Originally from, Balgeeth, Kilmessan, Co. Meath, he lived in Strandhill Road, Sligo and had nine children – all of whom engaged in daring pursuits.

Kevin Murray kept a 50-foot, 270 horsepower motor cruiser called the MV Chumvi at the Sligo Yacht Club, and used it to assist in many search and rescue missions.

During one daring rescue, which led to a bravery award, Kevin Murray, accompanied by his eldest son Alan, plucked stranded sailors from the rocks of the Black Rock lighthouse in stormy seas at considerable risk to themselves.

On another occasion in 1970, the MV Chumvi led the Asgard into port for the famous vessel’s first-ever visit to Sligo. Now on display in the National Museum at Collins Barracks, the Asgard played a key gun-running role in advance of the 1916 rising and later became Ireland’s first national sail training vessel.

Kevin Murray was also a pilot, as was his wife, Peg, and local newspapers dubbed the family the ‘Flying Murrays’ in headlines.

One Donegal Democrat photo from 1964 shows Kevin and Peg and their nine children (including Fionn) sitting on the wing of their Swallow plane.

Kevin Murray was also a motor sport champion and water skiing fanatic and one of the founders of the Sligo Waterski Club.

He built his racing cars – the Murray’s Mercury series – himself, and was a four-time winner of the Hewison Trophy, the longest-running motor race in Ireland.

During the blizzards of 1947, he used a US army truck, purchased after the war, as a snow plough to help ESB restore power and distribute food supplies receiving council tributes for this work. Kevin died in 2000 aged 91, two years after the accident that claimed the life of his son, Fionn.

Sasha’s mother Jessica Schiller was also a racing fanatic and worked as a mechanic for Fionn Murray’s team. Jessica’s parents, Holger and Erika, are part of a German mining and granite dynasty from Weidenberg, Bavaria that dates back to 1890.

Three bodies were found after the boat sank.

In the 1970s, Holger and Erika fell in love with Ireland during a holiday and bought Ardtarmon Castle, near Lissadell House in Sligo. Holger placed an ad in a local newspaper seeking a German-speaking architect to renovate the property. Today, Ardtarmon Castle is run by Erika and provides self-catering luxury accommodation to visitors.

It is also home to an estate agency called Schiller and Schiller, which is run by Bjorn, an uncle of Sasha.

In 1996, Bjorn won the Formula Ford 1600 ‘Star of Tomorrow’ championship in the Phoenix Park, with Fionn Murray as manager and Kevin Murray as the engine builder.

Two days before Monday’s yacht tragedy, Bjorn presented the Fionn Murray Memorial Trophy to the winner of an annual race held in his honour in Mondello.
