Centre Stage’s ‘Summer Breezin’ evokes a yacht rock beach party

Centre Stage’s “Summer Breezin’” is designed to make everyone feel like they’re at a beach party.

The musical revue, running July 13-Aug. 6, focuses on yacht rock, that popular style of music from the ’70s and ’80s that combines smooth rock and soul with a little jazz, R&B and even disco.

A six-member cast, backed by an eight-member band, will perform songs by Hall & Oats, Fleetwood Mac, Carole King, Steely Dan, Bobby Caldwell, the Eagles, ABBA and many others.

They’ll sing in various combinations, including solos and full ensemble numbers.

Featured songs include “Sail Away,” “Stuck in the Middle with You,” “Want You Back,” “Baby Come Back,” “Stayin’ Alive” and “Surfin’ USA,” among a dozen others.

If you like pina coladas and getting’ caught in the rain, “Escape” — also known as the “Pina Colada Song” — is also on the menu.

For Eckenrod, a devoted yacht rock fan, the problem was not coming up with a set list but figuring out what to exclude from the rich array of possible songs. Eckenrod spent eight months exploring the possibilities.

“It was very hard to narrow down the song list,” Eckenrod said. “It was definitely difficult to not include a lot of great songs. I really tried to play to the yacht rock fan club and not just choose my own personal favorites.”

Long-standing tradition

Centre Stage is well known for its popular summer music revues, a long-standing tradition. Those shows have centered on a variety of music styles, including hard work, country and 1950s and ’60s music.

“Summer Breezin’” is firmly in that “tried-and-true Centre Stage tradition,” Eckenrod said.

Featured actors are Townsend J. Pass, Jonathan Raines, DeAndre Presley, Meg Jones, Miranda Harrison and Kelsey Olivia. Pass, Presley and Olivia are making their Centre Stage debuts.

The show’s creative team includes several longtime Centre Stage collaborators. Eckenrod is a longtime Centre Stage actor now working as an artistic associate in Colorado at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Christopher Rose serves as assistant director and Meghan Reimers is the associate music director. Lustra Miller makes her Centre Stage debut as choreographer. Greg Day serves as the band director.

Funeral plans have been announced for Rob Pitts , of Greenville, South Carolina, who was famous for starring in the Netflix series "Tex Mex Motors."

Pitts, also known as "The Rabbit," died Sunday from stomach cancer at the age of 45, according to his videographer Jeff Trahan.

Pitts' funeral will be held Friday at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley.

A visitation and public car show will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The public is welcome to bring chairs and tents.

The public funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. and is expected to last until 1 p.m. The capacity of the church is 3,500.

Pitts was filming the second season of the Netflix show "Tex Mex Motors" in March when he was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer.

The tribute video below was posted on YouTube Sunday night.

In the video, Pitts said, "Don't be sad for me. I accomplished my dream of buying my own store, filming Season 2 of Netflix, and marrying the love of my life."

Trahan said Pitts grew up in Greenville and attended Wade Hampton High School.

Pitts was also the CEO of Pitts Truck Service and owned Rabbits Used Cars in Seneca.
