Raft-Up Party at Devil’s Cove (Lake Travis)

Devil’s Cove is one of the most infamous party coves in America, and for renters visiting the Austin area, it never disappoints. During weekends throughout the summer—and during busy holidays like spring break, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day—it's normal to expect 200 boats or more to raft-up in this location. Local police authorities actively patrol this area, so if you are boating without a professional captain onboard, be sure to boat responsibly and assign a designated sober skipper. Getting to Devil’s Cove : Devil’s Cove is located on the northshore of Lake Travis, just north of Northshore Marina at the Hollows and Vincent’s on the Lake.

Fishing and Cruising the Colorado River

The Colorado River is basically the interstate waterway of Austin, connecting Lake Travis in the north, to Lake Austin, and finally down to Lady Bird Lake and beyond. Anglers will find some of the best bass fishing in central Texas, as these waterways are known for hosting largemouth, guadalupe, and white bass. Other target species in this area include gar, freshwater drum, and carp. If it's your first time fishing near Austin, look to  book a fishing charter for a guided experience and learn from local captains.

Pro Tip : Just past the Mansfield Dam Park, you’ll find Tom Hughes park located along the northern part of the river near Lake Travis. This is one of the lake’s most popular areas to drop anchor to go swimming or watch the sunset.

Take in the Sights at Hippie Hollow (Lake Travis)

Warning—this experience is best suited for adults only! Call the babysitter and leave the kiddos at home for this boat outing. Why? Well, Hippie Hollow Park is the only clothing-optional public park in the state of Texas, and entry to the park is restricted to those 18 years of age or older. And yes, you will see plenty of nude sunbathers here enjoying the summer heat along the rock formations and swimming in the water. Entry to the park is free if arriving by boat. On land, day entry is $8 per person, with park hours open between 9am to 8pm every day, rain or shine.

Pro Tip : The shoreline along Hippie Hollow is known to be quite rocky, so if you’re arriving by boat you’ll want to anchor just off shore before swimming up to the rocks.

Getting to Hippie Hollow : The park is directly across from the Mansfield Dam Boat Ramp, as well as the Commanders Point Yacht Basin and nearby to Marshall Ford Marina near Tom Hughes Park.

Where to Go Boating in Austin

Lake Travis

Lake Travis , which is a 40-minutes drive north of downtown Austin, offers limitless entertainment and things to do for boaters and watersports enthusiasts. Aside from Devil's Cove and Hippie Hollow, places like Starnes Island and Mansfield Dam Park are other well known boating hop spots. Boaters can find Starnes Island in the Sandy Creek area of the lake, and may often hear it referenced by one of its many nicknames: ‘Monkey Island,’ ‘Rattlesnake Island,’ or ‘Snake Island.’ If you’re interested in checking out these iconic Lake Travis locations, we recommend booking a boat rental with a captain who can handle navigation, anchoring, and raft-ups.

Nearby Marinas : VIP Marina Lake Travis is just north of Starnes Island, while boaters will find Lake Travis Marina to the south and the Northshore Marina at the Hollows to the west. Marshall Ford Marina is close to Mansfield Dam Park

Wake zone : Yes - Devil’s Cove, Starnes Island and Mansfield Dam Park each have a lot of incoming and outgoing boat traffic, so be very conscious of your surroundings and keep an eye out for other boaters.

Pro Tips : If you’re visiting Lake Travis for the Fourth of July, Starnes Island is home to the famous fireworks display, put on by local dockside restaurant Beachside Billy’s.

Lake Austin , just 11-miles north and a 20-minutes drive from downtown, is home to the famous Pennybacker Bridge (also known as the Austin 360 Bridge). If you’ve ever seen destination or travel highlights of Austin, you’ve likely seen this beloved landmark showcased. Be sure to grab a group photo of a bridge as the sun sets, and then take advantage of some of the best dock-and-dine locations on the lake—many of which are located along or near Austin Boulevard, including Hula Hut, Ski Shores Cafe, and Abel’s on the Lake, just to name a few.

Lady Bird Lake

Lake Bird Lake is located right near the heart of downtown Austin and is a go-to favorite for locals who want to go kayaking, hiking, biking and stand-up paddleboarding. Motorized vessels are not allowed in this lake; however, watercraft powered by electric motors under 5 horsepower are allowed to operate. While swimming is prohibited, anglers will be happy to hear that there is an impressive population of largemouth bass, as well as sunfish and large carp. Electric trolling motors that meet the horsepower requirements are ideal for fishing and navigating these waters. This location is also popular for night fishing.

Nearby Boat Ramps : Festival Beach Boat Ramp is the best location for launching small vessels. 

Wake zone : Yes - the entire lake is a no wake zone.

Pro Tips : Zebra mussels (an aquatic invasive species) have been found in Lady Bird Lake. Be sure to clean, drain, and dry your boat, trailer, livewells and bait buckets, and other gear before launching into another body of water.

We had a great time with Wave in Water for July 4. Our captain was new but he was very nice and accommodating. The only downfall is the dock is very small so you have to wait for all the other boats. Lake Travis is beautiful.

Our main pickup location on Lake Austin is at the Loop 360 Boat Ramp just 15 minutes from downtown Austin. 

We include everything in our boat rentals ! This includes: 12' Lay on floating mat, floating pong table with cups and balls, XL cooler with water bottles and lots of Ice, fuel and a captain .

Almost all of our groups get a nice cruise up the lake and head over to the party cove. This is where all the action is. We will tie up with other boats, layout our floating mats, pong tables and jam out to some tunes!  A tour of Little Venice is a Lake Austin favorite.

Lake Austin is rated the overall best Lake. Lake Austin is definitely the closest, cleanest and safest Lake out of the two. While both Lakes boast party coves, Lake Travis is home of Devils Cove which is the infamous party barge cove.

This was the most perfect trip. We did 3pm tour that started with a party and ended with the most beautiful sunset. Captain Chris was the bomb and can throw a deep eddy cocktail perfectly onto the Lilly pad so we never had to leave the water. He was an excellent Grillmaster and the perfect host. We did this boat experience for my bachelorette party, there were 13 females from the age 25-65. We had Captain Dave and he was awesome!!!!! We weren’t sure what to expect but the whole day exceeded our expectations by far!!!! We went to the party area of the lake but chose to not hook up to the other boats just so there wasn’t so many people we couldn’t keep up with our own party. Captain Dave was the best dj/bartender/entertainer and more! He made our whole weekend and I cannot wait to do this again. I highly recommend this to EVERYONE! Yes of course your choice of type of food. If drinking beer or other alcohol make sure everyone is over 21. We’re not afraid to card you.

What not to bring?

Please do not bring:

Glass (that includes wine bottles and the monogrammed cups for your bridal party

Temporary tattoos Spray tan applicators Pets of any size Glitter or something similar Silly spray Bubble machines Sunflowers seeds Fishing poles Children under the age of three kayaks

And pretty much anything the color red that will stain, like tabasco, red wine, or Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. 

Where do I park?

There’s a lot right outside of the marina where you can park for $15 per vehicle. But let’s be honest, you should probably Uber.

What if I want to cancel my charter?

If you want to cancel your party barge rental we’ll be sad, but we’ll survive — as long as you as long as you follow our cancellation policy.

Can we bring more people?

No. If the number of people you have is more than 17 you want to invite on a boat then you need fewer friends. Our double decker party barges don’t have the design, length, or weight for over 17 and must comply to occupancy rules.

What time should we arrive?

All parties must arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled party boat time for departure.

Your time starts when you booked, not when you arrive — and the ship will sail without you.

What activities will be a part of the boat rental?

We will suggest itineraries however the destinations are your choice. Places we typically go are Mansfield Dam, The island, the Oasis at sunset, Hippie Hollow or Devil’s Cove, lake restaurants, or whatever your choice for your passengers to swim, float, and create some memories. 

We will not be wakeboarding or tubing, kayaking, or renting kayak.

How far in advance should I make a reservation?

Make sure to give yourself plenty of time (at least 4-6 months in advance).  Reservations fill up quickly.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

P ORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off the Italian coast where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm while anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city of Palermo.

The body of the the ship’s cook, identified as Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was recovered Monday. 

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, are also missing. 

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after getting into a lifeboat.

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.  

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury earlier this year, stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

We had the best time on lake Austin! We had 6 adults and 5 kids (from ages 6-2). Captain Christopher was awesome with our group and made sure everyone was comfortable and having an awesome time. He was super safe and thoughtful of all the kids on board. They loved the Lilly pad and he gave us lots of time to play in the water. The boat was really nice and well kept. We will definitely be going again this summer!

Boat bros atx was excellent. thomas communicated clearly in the days leading up to our outing and our captain, haigen, was great. they made everything super easy, were on time, and provided a great experience. the price was great too, beating just about every competitor in austin., it was a great experience. we loved our stop surrounded by awesome people enjoying their day as well. plus, the ride afterwards around the lake enjoying the beautiful view and houses is all worth it our captain heigen was awesome as well., our driver haigen was great he listened to our group and accommodated our interests.
