The CQ Boat Ramp & Harbor is adjacent to the CQ Propety, but not associated with the Marina.  Access is controlled via electronic gate and access is only permitted to members and paid guests.  

Options to launch boats, Kayaks & PWC's is available during business hours of the restaurant by paying $15 in the lobby, OR you can purchase a membership access key that will allow 24/7 access to the ramp.

No overnight boat, trailer or car storage is permitted.

It's important to mention that this is not a free ramp to use.  There are free options in the area, but this ramp is not free.

Prior to 1958, the last defense of the America’s Cup had been in 1937, by the J-Class yacht Ranger , owned by Harold S. “Mike” Vanderbilt. The J-Class rules prescribing a vessel of some 120 feet in length were promoted by Vanderbilt and others for the defense planned for 1958, but economic concerns and the desire among aspiring competitors to employ smaller dual-purpose yachts won the day. The New York Yacht Club settled on the twelve-meter class rules, reducing the length of the average vessel to around sixty-five feet. Harry Sears, then the club’s commodore, formed a syndicate to build the ship and asked Briggs to join to help with finances.

Although building and racing his cars had long been Briggs’ primary field of endeavor, he had never stopped sailing, and he agreed to join the effort. Sailing legend Cornelius Shields was appointed as the team’s skipper but, when he suffered a heart attack, Sears asked Cunningham to take Shields’ place.

As a member of five East Coast yacht clubs, with almost thirty years’ experience racing several different classes of vessel, Briggs was a solid choice to lead. The one thing he lacked was experience with the starting strategy required by the head-to-head style of America’s Cup competition. Shields, a master of this type of racing, was happy to impart his knowledge to Cunningham, who proved an able student.

Unfortunately, as skipper it was Briggs who had to inform Shields that he could not remain a member of the crew; if he suffered an attack during competition and had to be taken to the hospital, it would leave them a man short and result in their disqualification. It was a tough moment for both men, but it was also characteristic of both to do what was best for the team.

The eliminations for the American side would prove to be more exciting than the final races. Four twelve-metre yachts, Easterner , Weatherly , Vim and Columbia , survived two months of run-offs to compete in the final eight-day round of match races to determine the defender of the America’s Cup. Of the four contenders, only the Vim had raced previously, but the nineteen-year-old vessel was so completely refitted as to be virtually brand new. The Easterner and Weatherly had been hurriedly completed and neither was fully prepared to compete, although the Weatherly would successfully defend the Cup in 1962.

Columbia benefited from a strong syndicate whose membership included Harry Sears, Olin Stephens, the designer of the Vim , and Cornelius Shields, Jr., who occasionally spelled Briggs as skipper. The competition finally narrowed to Vim and Columbia , which prevailed by virtue of her ability to better handle rough seas and strong winds.

The British challenger, Sceptre , entered by the Royal Yacht Squadron and skippered by Graham Mann, was a quite rotund 68,000 pounds compared to the svelte Columbia at 57,000 pounds, and the event was decided in four straight wins by the Americans.

During the post-race celebrations, Briggs located a pay phone and called Alfred Momo at Watkins Glen, where Ed Crawford had just won the main race. As Briggs was returning to join his crew, a reporter approached and commented, “Briggs, that was a fine race!” to which Briggs, still with the Glen on his mind, replied, “That’s what I just heard. I wish I could have seen it.”

A member of a yacht club asked to bring her service dog into the clubhouse and argued that she was entitled to do so under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The club responded that it was covered by an exception for “private clubs or establishments exempted from coverage under title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” 42 U.S.C. § 12187, and it refused the member’s request for an exception to its pet policy. The relationship between the member and the club deteriorated from there. The member filed an administrative complaint with a local civil rights authority, and the club suspended her and then expelled her from its membership. All students must take a swim test each year on the first day of class. The swim test requires each student to swim 200 feet wearing sailing clothes (shoes included), tread water for two minutes without a lifejacket and then put on his/her lifejacket in the water. Equipment Quissett Yacht Club (QYC) provides all boats used by sailors in the Junior Sailing Program. Daily, each sailor must bring a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device with an attached whistle to be worn at all times on the water, and wear toe-covering shoes (no Crocs). Sailors are encouraged to wear sun protective clothing. In addition they should bring sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle to class each day. Registration Class sizes are limited. • Press Release Bayerischer Yacht-Club Wins St. Petersburg Press Release Bayerischer Yacht-Club wins St. Petersburg Qualifier in SAILING Champions League St. Petersburg, 7 July 2019 – Bayerischer Yacht-Club from Germany has won the third and final Qualifier of the SAILING Champions League 2019. They won by 4 points from the also German runner-up, Wassersport-Verein Hemelingen. Union Yacht Club Wolfgangsee from Austria became third. Of the 20 teams competing, the top six have qualified for a place at the Final in St. Moritz next month. They are: 1. Bayerischer Yacht-Club (Germany) 2. Wassersport-Verein Hemelingen (Germany) 3. Union Yacht Club Wolfgangsee (Austria) 4. PIRogovo (Russia) 5. Regattaclub Oberhofen (Switzerland) 6. St. Petersburg Yacht Club (Russia) The event was frustrated by no racing on day one, due to excessively strong winds. This was followed by two days of very light airs, which meant only five flights of racing could be completed before the final day. The wind for the last day was also light but consistent and enough for another three flights, making every result count more than usual. Skipper Julian Autenrieth of the winning team from Bayerischer Yacht-Club commented: “The location in St. Petersburg is great here in the middle of the city. But the conditions were really tricky, with the low winds and the current. You always had to be able to stay calm. What we did well throughout were the starts with the current. • 20150907 Press Release Clubs Porto Cervo En YACHT CLUB COSTA SMERALDA Press Release Preparations Underway for Second SAILING Champions League Hamburg/Porto Cervo, 7th September 2015 – For the second time in sailing history, the SAILING Champions League is taking place, with this year's event being hosted at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo in Sardinia from 18th to 20th September 2015. The organisers are expecting 32 clubs from over 12 nations to participate in the prestigious, transnational club competition, ready to challenge the defending champion, the Royal Danish Yacht Club from Copenhagen, and claim the trophy. Only one year after the inaugural event of the SAILING Champions League, this year’s event in Porto Cervo at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda brings a showdown of the best sailing clubs of the national sailing leagues. The club competition with a standard format featuring short races lasting not more than 15 minutes on one-design boats very close to the shoreline was an important development for the sport of sailing. The 2014 event was so successful that 13 European countries and the USA were so excited about the format that they created their own sailing leagues in 2015. Rules: Races will be governed by the rules as defined in the current The Racing Rules of Sailing and by the Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions. 2. Eligibility and Entry 2.1. Races are open to boats of all types from CYC and NHYC with a currently valid PHRF certificate issued by HRYRA or by YRALIS, except as allowed by 4.2. 2.2. Start will be Pursuit Start - Each boat will be assigned a start time addition to the Starting gun based on their PHRF rating. 2.3. First Gun ( Warning) will be at 2:30 pm 3. Signals Made Ashore: There will be no signals made from shore. 4. Classification. 4.1. Boats shall have a currently valid PHRF certificate issued by HRYRA or by YRALIS. 4.2. All CYC and NHYC members and guests are encouraged to participate regardless of their experience level.
