Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Later versions were built by Strettin in Poland, and an unknown builder in Japan. It is thought that at least 300 were built.

Introduced to the UK in 1974, this IOR-derived cruiser was from the prolific and innovative board of American Dick Carter. Northshore Yachts built the first batch as racers, with a large cockpit and bigger sailplan, but when racing success dried up, the company produced a second version with a smaller cockpit, less sail area and a fully-fitted interior with a conventional but effective five-berth layout. In this format she was well built and finished, and made a good fast cruiser with excellent handling. Production moved to Poland in 1979 and was continued by Teliga until 1988, as the Teliga 30. More than 400 were built in all. Polish quality was variable and the interior joinery in particular varied from adequate to poor. New boat prices were low and second-hand values should reflect this. There were also some home-built British boats.

LOA 9.08m (29ft 9in), LWL 7.01m (23ft), beam 3.06m (10ft 1in), draught 1.68m (5ft 6in) displacement 3,084kg (6,800lb). Price guide:  YM Test Report November 1998.

Review of Carter 30

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with 5 berths, a galley and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Carter 30 has been built with different keel alternatives.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The Carter 30 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

This keel is also made of iron.

Carter 30 can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar YS12 diesel engine at 12 hp (8 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.6 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Carter 30 is 2.01, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Carter 30 is about 160 kg/cm, alternatively 897 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 160 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 897 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 27m 2 (290 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Boat: Albin Vega
my old 23ft , and am now on the look for something a bit more . I am gonna be looking at a Carter 30 this weekend, taking her out for a spin, and I know next to nothing about the type. I've heard that some have been extensively cruised, crossing oceans and even doing some circumnavigations, but that's about it.

The boat is from 1988 and has a relatively fresh Nanni Kubota , from 1999. I don't know where the boat was built, apparently Carter 30 was built all over the place.

Do any of you have anything good / bad to say about the boat? Any weak points I might have to look out for?

, crossing Sea and North Sea at yearly basis. Recently two people from my Yacht Club just sailed across Atlantic singlehanded (back and forth) on one of them.

In my opinion it's a little outdated in terms of space and design, but they are sailing quite good from my 4 trips on this boat average cruising speed is about 3.5-4.0 kn.

As a anecdote.
Few years ago one of the Carters 30 was abandoned by a crew in a gale near the coast of .
Crew claimed that the boat started to sink and it was no longer safe to stay on board, they ware taken by SAR and left the boat on the open sea.

A few days later this particular boat was found by Coast Guard... sailing in a good condition but without a crew of course.
So she's was quite , she was sailing by herself especially when the crew was not disturbing her.

. They are good sailing and are quite capable of going anywhere. They actually have quite good stowage space for their size and the layout works very well at sea although the fore bunks are a litle on the short side if youare over 6ft tall. They stand up to their sail well and can point high too. The is fixed onto a moulded stub.

All in all I liked her a lot especilly in bad when she looked after me very well.

. A friend one - coastal sailing from N to and back. He says good things about the boat too.

What I do not like about them is they seem very much based on an (?) IOR - may become a handfull in heavy going downwind (?). My guess, not something I experienced.

They have nice, small and the looks pretty seagoing too.

If you buy one keep eye on the to joint as I know some of them had issues there - probably too little glass used in the keel-ward portions of the hull. (As said they came from various though, maybe it is a boatyar, not design issue).

There are also bigger Carters.

ok in a breeze (did the needles channel in against tide F5 gusting 6) she took a green one into the ,, which is small and it didn't faze her one bit. She kept on going straight even with the cockpit full of . it did not affect her balance and no where near a broach which might have been possible if she had a modern wide stern and a large cockpit. Beneteau Introduces the New First 30… the Planing Cruiser

Beneteau First 30

Beneteau has introduced the new First 30, a sailboat designed to offer a fresh approach to small-boat sailing with the concept of a planing cruiser. This model aims to make the experience of planing—when a boat lifts from the water and moves at higher speeds—more accessible to a wider range of sailors.

A New Category: The Planing Cruiser

The First 30 introduces the idea of a “planing cruiser,” a sailboat designed for both ease of use and performance. Andraz Mihelin, CEO of Seascape, notes that today’s sailors are looking for a different experience than in the past. “Sailing today is less about racing and more about connecting with nature and enjoying time with others,” he explains. In response to this shift, Beneteau and Seascape have worked together to create a new type of sailboat that balances performance with comfort and simplicity.

Building on a Legacy

The First 30 builds on Beneteau’s history, marking an important development for the company’s 140th anniversary. This model was designed with input from a team of experienced designers and engineers to create a boat that responds to the needs of modern sailors.

The First 30 is designed to get up to planing speeds quickly and is easy to manage with a simple rig and a clean, uncluttered cockpit. This makes it a practical choice for a variety of sailors, whether sailing with a small crew or with family. The boat is designed to perform well under different conditions, with an emphasis on ease of handling and safety.

Beneteau First 30 Interiors

Affordability and Accessibility

One of the key aspects of the First 30 is its accessible price point. With a base price of €100,000 (excluding VAT) and various financial options, Beneteau aims to open up the planing cruiser category to a broad range of sailors.

sailing

Comfortable Interior Design

The interior of the First 30 is designed with comfort in mind, offering accommodation for up to four people in two cabins. The saloon features a 1.85-meter headroom, and the boat includes a functional galley with a stove and fridge, a marine head, and well-planned storage options. Sustainable materials such as cork flooring and magnetic doors reflect a thoughtful approach to design.

For those looking for more interior features, Beneteau offers an optional ‘premium pack’ that includes upgraded upholstery, a saloon backrest, and customizable lighting and materials.

Thoughtful Deck and Cockpit Layout

The deck and cockpit of the First 30 have been designed to offer both comfort and functionality. The cockpit can be set up in two different configurations, one for day sailing and cruising, and another for racing. Both layouts focus on keeping the space uncluttered, with easy access to controls. The cruising layout is designed to be manageable with minimal effort, while the racing layout provides additional trim controls for those who are looking for more performance-focused sailing.

A New Offering for a Changing Market

The Beneteau First 30 is positioned as a versatile sailboat that brings together the enjoyment of planing with practical features for both performance and leisure sailing. It will officially launch at Boot Düsseldorf in January 2025.
