Peterson The Royal Yacht

For all of the P&C Faithful who were concerned that Dunhill tobaccos had disappeared forever - good news! The blends are back using the same exact blends and tobaccos, coming from the same factory. The only thing that's different is that they are now under the Peterson name. Even the classic artwork remains.

Peterson The Royal Yacht is a singular blend of bright Virginias for sweetness and darker Virginias for more body and richness. The tobaccos are matured, then combined and finally finished with a unique mixture of flavors to create a blend unlike any other.

To clear any misunderstandings, this blend is now being sold as Peterson Royal Yacht. As far as I know, the blend is the same, only the brand name has changed. This is a blend of empire virginias, topped with a plum essence. The cut is a ready rub, somewhat uneven, but very easy to pack and get going. When I pop a tin of RY, I'll smoke the first bowls rather moist. In this state, the topping is obvious and the tobacco itself seems rather muted. The topping is pleasant, lightly applied and fades during the smoke until almost gone by the end of the smoke. Smoking moist tobacco requires more relights and can cause tongue burn. As the contents of the tin dry out, the tobacco burns better, the topping steps back and the tobaccos take the lead. This is a strong blend. Maybe the strongest I have tried. I have not tried the ropes, but compared to 1792 Flake, Irish Flake, ODF and such, this leads the field. It might be because the cut makes it burn a little faster. Empire virginias are stronger and less sweet than the virginias found in, say, Capstan or Full Virginia Flake. The flavors are bready, a little tangy, notes of camphor or something like that arise from the sheer strength of the smoke, especially on the retrohale. There are some prominent flowery notes as well, and I suspect they are the reason some reviewers claim to taste lakeland essences, of which there are none. This blend is way to strong for me to smoke while driving or working, but goes well with an alcoholic beverage, as alcohol and nicotine seem to mellow each other out. I smoke Royal Yacht when I can sit down with a drink on the weekend or when out on the town. I always have some on hand and I give it a full rating. It's perfect for its use.

Royal Yacht was sort of a jokey blend on Forums, or discussed that way, a few years ago. Royal Yuck, etc. Others approved and strongly defended it. I let a tin age for several years, and mentioned that on Forums, and a member encouraged me to try it, maybe with some levity. My experience of it was different than I expected. In context, I had been adventuring with some of the stronger blends, black rope, Indonesian Tambolaka, and one or two others. So Royal Yacht struck me as full-bodied but not extra strong, and aromatic in a good way by being tobacco forward. I finished off the tin quickly, for me, and found it consistent and pleasing. But at that time, it was not a challenge at all, and fell in step with my rotation, including milder tobaccos, with no problem. I have another tin waiting in the wings, Dunhill brand, and hope I will enjoy it a second time. workman, thank you for more detail on the tobacco and topping, which is more nuanced that what I had at the time.

Thanks for your impressions on that blend. It does't make the waiting for it to be rereleased here in Germany a lot easier. But may I ask, what are Empire Virginias?

I tried royal yacht a few years ago and I think I found it too strong. It is one I plan to try again. Thanks for the review Workman

I believe empire Virginia refers to plants grown in other places than Virginia, e.g. places that used to be part of the British empire. Or not, just a guess ?

Alternatively they might be Darth Vader’s side hustle as an evil tobacco lord, lol. Come over to the Dark Side of the Force, Luke. We’ve got Royal Yacht here. Tasty it is.

I wouldn't prompt anyone to go for full strength tobacco per se, but if you are trying a blend you believe to be stronger than your usual smoke, just follow the usual guides. Try it on a full stomach, and when you have had plenty of liquid to drink, i.e. you're hydrated. Some people want to dive right in, but you can begin with a small chamber pipe or a third of a bowl, to get the measure of the beast, before you proceed. If it is not enjoyable, you can use a dusting of the strong tobacco to pick up blends that may be too mild, too bland. I guess everyone wants to test their metal now and then, but with pipe smoking, I do go for pleasure first. Sampling strong leaf in the evening allows you to go to bed if you get too much nicotine, which may be why they call the blend Nightcap.

I have a very old Tin of Royal Yacht. Every time I smoked it before yesterday, it wreaked havoc with my body chemistry. So much so, I stopped smoking it on its own, and used it to mix with Black XX Twist to improve the burn qualities of Black XX. This week, I am revisiting all the tobaccos which are in my cellar, but did not like it for whatever reason. Yesterday it was the turn for Royal Yacht. Since this tin was cracked in 2017 and has been opened many times, as I only used a pinch to add to Black XX, the tobacco is now bone dry. The topping has mostly faded but you can still smell it. I loaded it in a Squat Bulldog and smoked it for an hour. I generally have a slow cadence, but I smoked it even slower. The result was - I finally had a good / successful smoke of Royal Yacht. Now that I know, I can smoke it, I will finish this tin. I will still be very reluctant to buy it again.

I love the stuff and it has never hit me with nicotine, which is strange because I’m usually sensitive to nicotine. I think it’s definitely unique among all of its fellow Virginia blends. Nice review!

kola

It's heavily sauced in BENGAY with a touch of Vicks Vap-o-rub .

danimalia

Nice job with the review. This blend is a perfect example of how tastes are different. A lot of people really dislike the topping and it drowns out the tobaccos for them. I thought the topping was fairly mild, and the overall effect similar to a VaPer. That said, this blend was just kind of "meh" for me. Pleasant enough but not something I'm likely to buy again.

Thanks for your in-depth review,I have had this a few times before, and I come to the realization one has to accustomise himself to smoking this blend, so to say , going slow is the safest bet with this one

Peterson The Royal Yacht Mixture Pipe Tobacco

£ 20.70

A very characterful pipe tobacco that is enjoyable from the first bowl to the very last. With notes of plum, raisin and Perique, The Royal Yacht Mixture is a pipe tobacco worth appreciating, burns smooth whilst delivering a consistent strength and rounds off to a sweeter note.

Ages of children, maxx royal bodrum resort.

Booming Bodrum's latest five-star resort is more of a village than a hotel. Minimalist suites and villas are set amongst lush vegetation and buggies shuttle guests between tropical green swimming pools, restaurants, and the beach. Impeccable service means if you're a toddler or tech millionaire you'll want for nothing.

Once cocooned inside the gates of the Maxx Royal in a way it doesn’t matter where you are. With so many dining options, places to lounge and onsite facilities it is a destination in itself and you are unlikely to feel the need to leave. Hugging the cliffs of the Bodrum Peninsular the resort curves round a private bay, the twinkling Aegean always in view. Bodrum town is a 30-minute taxi ride away (12 miles) should you wish to go haggling in the bazaar, take a gullet boat trip or visit attractions like the castle and marina. Bodrum airport is a 50-minute transfer (30 miles).

Style and Character

Leading Turkish architect Mahmut Anlar has excelled with his chic, minimalist design which manages to be both subtle and yet simultaneously jaw dropping. Set on a slope leading down to the sea, the 11-hectare hotel has a contemporary look. Sleek timber and glass suites, villas and public spaces emerge from the fragrant, juicy green gardens. In the huge lobby new guests are greeted with a glass of chilled champagne and a gigantic video installation by Turkish-American artist Refik Anadol, which takes up a whole wall. Colourful pixels swirl and swoop mimicking the ocean’s waves. The experience sets the tone well for a property which is aiming high in all areas, from its look and vibe to the levels of service.

Service and Facilities

On hand almost around the clock via WhatsApp were my personal “Maxx Assistants” Nazifa and Tugberk who helped book restaurants, order buggies and suggest activities. The young, international staff are exceptional. We lazed by the numerous swimming pools on loungers with mattresses so thick they were hard to leave. We also enjoyed the vibe at the beach, laid back tunes only interrupted by someone offering to clean my sunglasses. What a treat. Mykonos’s famous bar-club, Scorpios, has now arrived in Bodrum in partnership with the Maxx Royal. From yoga to top name DJ’s it’s a hip, hedonistic 24-hour hang out.

At the other end of the clubbing spectrum the kids’ club is phenomenal. Maxxi Land is a huge palace for pre-teens, with separate zones for different ages. Ball pits, video games, a cinema room, craft workshops, a dressing up area – and best of all for parents – a dormitory. Your children can stay until the early hours while you party. For grown-ups the 4500 sqm Maxx Wellbeing Centre offers a sanctuary of treatment rooms, hydro and thermal experiences and a traditional Turkish hammam. I had an incredible Swedish massage. There’s an indoor pool and a fitness centre with machines I didn’t even recognise. Numerous classes are available – antigravity yoga anyone?

  • Fitness centre
  • Kids' club

The hotel only has suites and villas and all come with a private balcony and big terrace, with great views of the coast. Rooms feel spacious and are a soothing mix of dark wood, green hand glazed tiles, stone and marble. The living area in our Royal suite had large burnt orange sofas which can be turned into single beds. Behind the main double bed is an open-plan dressing area and bathroom with a double shower – although no bath. I was amused to spot a team of gardeners on top of a neighbouring suite – trimming the grass on the ‘living’ roof. They are very hi-tech – I enjoyed waking up the kids from my bed by opening their curtains via the room’s iPad. The Presidential Villa has five bedrooms, a heated saltwater pool, steam room, sauna, hot tub and private fitness centre. Stay a week and get a free trip on the resort’s yacht!

Food and Drink

The food makes the resort truly standout with a choice of eight restaurants. Breakfast is included, and what a breakfast it is. In the large Twentyfour restaurant (which never closes) before you even order, small plates of cheeses, meats and jams arrive. My favourite touch, grinning waiter Emrullah proudly wheeling his pastry trolley between guests. Spago, by chef Wolfgang Puck, is fine dining at its best. I tucked into a stunning filet mignon while watching mega-yachts glide past. Amongst olive trees and a few steps from the beach, Casa Sol has a Latin theme. The grilled prawns were amazing. ORO by Alfredo Russon is an elevated Italian dining experience while Caviar Kaspia boasts the best views, location, and wallet busting prices.

Value for Money

Suites from €875 (£750). Breakfast included.

Access for guests with disabilities?

Accessible rooms are available, and all public areas have full access including the beach.

Family-Friendly?

The resort is perfect for families with children’s menus, an ice cream parlour, watersports, flexible accommodation and the incredible Maxxi Land meaning from toddlers to teens and beyond everyone is happy.

Pleasant to Tolerable. I actually purchased a tin of Royal Yacht as more of an evening/after dinner smoke. When my tin arrived in the mail, I of course opened it, and took a whiff. It has an outstanding tin note, slightly sweet, but with hints of raisin and fall leaves. Just a very very nice tobacco aroma.

Dunhill Royal Yacht was introduced in 1912 and has been a firm favourite with smokers around the world ever since. What is essentially a Virginia mixture is given a slight plum topping, adding a little to the smoking experience. It comes across as almost a VaPer without the addition of Perique. From the tin this tobacco has a wonderfully complex Virginia aroma with a slight raisin not to it.
