Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Hi, I am new to this forum so I hope I will not make any mistakes in terms of etiquette, or anything like that. Anyway, I just found a review of a Maxi 95 on the forum boat reviews section. I am interested in learning more about this boat mostly because I have one, and would like to learn if it is the boat I can use to sail away over the horizon - so to speak. I've had my boat for about 3 years, now, and have slowly been getting into the sort of state I like - mostly a mess, but it behaves better and sails better than it has for quite some time, I reckon. However, I am not a terribly experienced sailor and am not sure what I think about the boat's ability to really be a passagemaker. I am uncertain just how seakindly the boat really is, but the reviewer seems to think that it is. So I find this intriguing. Anyone have any experience with this kind of boat - I would love to hear about your experiences with it.
The Maxi 95 is a Swedish built boat, you might have better luck at a European forum like this Yachting Monthly's Scuttlebutt - Yachting and Boating World Forums Here is a link to a Norwegian boat on longer trip S/Y Serendipity You could try this http://www.maxiowners.org.uk/
thanks - i'll give it a go.

Maxi 95 in OZ

I am considering buying a 1980 Maxi 95 for sale here in Sydney. Only problem, they're unheard of here and nobody can tell me anything about them. Pleased to hear from owners. I'm looking for a very safe and sound sea boat with a good pedigree, easily sailed short-handed (crew of two, sometimes one) for coastal/offshore cruising. Possible ocean crossing. is the maxi 95 a good choice?

Welcome Ian... join in the circle of Aussies who like to stir up the Poms every now and again... ( they give us a bit back, but as usual we are always on top) Now ,I could help you out by joining say 3 x 30' ers together ( well Scandia wasn't always that big ) Saw the article in OZ Yachting April edition , about the 75' Tri built here for Ellen MacArthur.. worth a read. On top? Yes, that's where all the big girls belong! And as for rugby, well you lot couldnt even beat a team that loses to the Irish (and the Frogs for that matter). Anyway, pleasantries over, do either of you Aussies know of an Oz or Kiwi manufacturer of good quality 35 ft cruising catamaran, preferably bridgedeck saloon type? I want to replace my current Prout, but we seem to have given up making anything here except excuses for sports teams.
this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.
Strangely, I do have a Maxi 95 and have cruised /raced her for some 7 years. Really good accommodation & a fantastic cockpit, way way better than anything else her size and a great centre for beer drinking. A very strong boat, easily handled, especially if you internalise the halyards and bring them back to the cockpit - easily done and reefing from the cockpit is 30-45 seconds. Bit slow in light airs but absolutely loves a blow & great at sea. Easlily handled, particularly now I have thrown out the morse cable steering and put in an arrangement of my own based 5mm Dyneema rope. The cockpit is too large for serious off-shore stuff, particularly with the cabin doors, although easily changed to a washboard arrangement. Offshore cruising is fine but you really do have to consider the volume and weight of water that the cockpit would hold if you were to be pooped. Other than that, she is a teriffic boat - enjoy!! By the way, designed by Pele Peterson who was an Olympic Gold Medalist and prolific race winner and boat designer and who is still racing today, almost 80 yrs old.

One of the largest manufacturers of decent sea going catamarans at the moment is South Africa - look at the Lagoon range.

At least our swimmers don't go overboard!
...If you can find the simple solution to a complex problem, you've got it wrong!.........
Surely Lagoon is French.
this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

Fin keel. The Maxi 95 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel ...
Maxi 95 Review. We are grateful to Yachting Monthly for permission to reproduce Yachting Monthly's early review of the Maxi 95, circa 1977. This is of historical significance because it shows that Pelle Petterson was selling the 95 based at Woolverstone on the River Orwell, near Harwich. Click on thumbnail to open in a new window.
Maxi 95 While centre-cockpit designs are often seen as being relatively sedate, with the emphasis on accommodation rather than performance, this is not true for the Maxi 95. The Maxi 95 offers plenty of room below without sacrificing performance and the unusual engine configuration provides easy access for maintenance.

Maxi 95. When first launched in the mid 1970s, the Maxi 95 was seen as a quick performance cruiser that would look after its crew in testing conditions. With a double berth in the main cabin, the Maxi 95 aft cabin, which is only accessible from the cockpit, offers two single berths with no standing headroom. For some owners it tends to become ...
