The History Of Star Clippers

When owner and president Mikael Krafft founded Star Clippers in1990, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of reviving the golden age of tall ships for new generations of travellers and adventures to enjoy.

Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Krafft grew up around the corner from one of the finest yacht builders in the world, the Plyms Shipyard, where he began working when he was just 6 years old. It was while he carried varnish and mixed wood stain for the old-timers that Krafft first learned about Pommern, a four masted steel barquentine, anchored as a national historical museum at the Swedish- Finnish Island of Aland.

By the time he was 10, his father had given him an 18-foot wide wooden sailboat that he would sail the 20- mile journey across the open sea - without a compass - to visit Pommern. He returned often, learning every foot of the ship, dreaming of the day when he would own such a vessel.

Krafft graduated from the University of Stockholm with a degree in maritime law, and he practiced law in both France and Sweden. In the late 1970s he became the managing owner of a small Swedish shipping company, L.Jeansson Co., which was founded in 1875. His company expanded into oil storage, forestry, saw mills, real estate and finance/leasing.

In 1986, Krafft sold his interests in Sweden and moved with his wife , Anne and their children, eric and Marie, to Brussels where he founded the White Star Group of Belgium. The company focused on major real estate developments within the Benelux countries.

Yet Krafft could not let go of his childhood dream. During a leisurely Caribbean cruise in 1987 aboard his own sailing yacht , Gloria, suddenly, as he recalls, "all of the pieces came together". he would build not one, but two clippers ships, and thus have a viable business proposition; a new cruise line to be named Star Clippers.

Turning his dream into a reality took three years of intense clipper ship research, including carefully studying preserved original plans of mid - 19th century ships.Numerous modifications had to be made to allow for modern materials, technology and engineering innovations. Aided by the White Star Group and a trusted team of experienced naval architiects and engineers,  the first new clipper ship in 90 years was successfully designed.

Construction of the tallest  clipper ship began in 1990 at the Belgium Shipbuilders Corporation yard at Ghent. The result was Star Flyer , a 360-foot sailing ship that launched in May 1991. A year later , Star Clipper, it's identical twin, was launched and gave Krafft his long-awaited fleet. In 2000, Krafft attained greater success with the introduction of Royal Clipper, the flagship of Star Clippers and the world's largest square - rigger in service today.

Review of Star Clippers

Star Clippers Ltd Corp (starclippers.com) is a Swedish/ Miami Florida USA -headquartered company and "tall sailing ship cruise" travel brand with a fleet of three luxury motorized sailing yachts. All vessels are fitted with computer-controlled sails in addition to the diesel engines.

The company's current fleet includes Star Clipper (4-masted barquentine/1992-built), Star Flyer (4-masted barquentine/1991-built), Royal Clipper (5-masted ship/2000-built). The brand's newest vessel (under charter) was planned to be Flying Clipper (now Golden Horizon) . However, the 5-masted sailship (2019-built) was instead chartered to Tradewind Voyages UK.

The company's owner and President is Mikael Krafft (1947-born in Stockholm Sweden ).

Star Clippers logo - CruiseMapper

The "tall ship cruise" company officially started operations in 1991, since when it provides 5-star luxury (private yacht-like) vacation travel products and services to its sophisticated clients, with ~60% customer repeat rate.

Founded by Mikael Krafft, Star Clippers Ltd Corp now owns and operates the world's largest full-rigged sail ships. Star Clippers' flag-states are Malta (registered in Valletta ) or Luxembourg - unlike large cruise liners which are usually flagged Panama or Bahamas.

Each of the Star Clippers ships has an aft-located marina platform that is lowered (when the ship is anchored) to serve the company's complimentary scuba diving and water sports activity program. The marina also serves the passenger tendering operations in areas without port infrastructure and facilities (piers, quays, wharves, terminals). When the ship is anchored (at sea), passengers are disembarked via tender boats or Zodiacs (inflatable high-speed boats also used for landings). Each ship has 2-3 outdoor swimming pools (on Sun Deck) which are filled with seawater and open only if weather permits. All the clippers are fully stabilized and with two bilge keels (on both sides of the vessel) to reduce rolling.

The dedicated Water Sports staff assists and guides passengers on water-based activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, banana boating, sunfish/dinghy (sailboat) sailing, kayaking, water skiing, windsurfing. Onboard pre-scheduled on each cruise activities (also provided complimentary to all cabin category passengers) include outdoor aerobics and yoga classes, swimming pool (sundeck), deck BBQ parties, talent nights, crew show, fashion shows, local (itinerary/ports-based) entertainment (live folkloric performances by local artists boarding the yacht).

Above-deck lookout stations (mounted on each mast) are equipped with safety rails and comfortable lounge seats to allow passengers 360-degree observation. Access to these stations is via climbing the masts - with supplied safety vests and dedicated deck crew supervision and assistance.

Shore excursions are optional and cost extra (not cruise fare inclusive). Optionally can be also booked pre-cruise and/or post-cruise tours in both homeports (departure ports) and non-port cities. The vessels can be also privately chartered. Ship charter deals are with unique (customized) itineraries and tailor-made activities both onboard and ashore.

Onboard purchases can be made in cash, with travelers' checks or via international credit cards (Visa, American Express, Mastercard) and will be added to the passenger's invoice (debited in EUR). Cash or travel check payments require a EUR 300 deposit. Gratuities (onboard tipping) are not included in the fares (suggested EUR 8 pp per day).

The company's provided cruise documents also include luggage tags, which must be filled out with the passenger's name and attached to his/her bags before checking in. Bringing alcoholic beverages on the ship is forbidden. Ashore-purchased alcohol (in call ports) will be taken at the gangway (upon reboarding the ship), stored and returned upon debarkation.

All staterooms are fitted with twin beds (convertible to a double Queen bed), smart HDTV (with DVD player), satellite phone, electronic safe box, dressing table with an armchair, en-suite bathroom (WC, washbasin, shower, hairdryer), 110V flat plugs (for a deposit, adapters can be borrowed from the Reception Desk) and 220V European plugs (on the 5-masted ships).

During summer, Star Clippers cruises as itineraries visit some of the best-known coastal destinations in Europe's Mediterranean, including the Italian and French rivieras, Balearic Islands (Spain), Adriatic Sea's Dalmatian Coast (Croatia), Greece, Turkey. European homeports include Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Cannes , Piraeus-Athens ,

During winter, the fleet is deployed in regions like the Caribbean (Central America) and Southeast Asia. Star Clippers Caribbean homeports are Bridgetown/Barbados and Philipsburg/St Maarten . In Asia, the company homeports in Phuket/Thailand , Singapore , Benoa/Bali-Indonesia .

In mid-June 2024 the company completed the fleetwide installation of high-speed Starlink WiFi connectivity. The available for purchase onboard WiFi packages include a 1GB plan (EUR 18 pp/valid for 7 days), a 3GB plan (EUR 50 pp/14 days) and a 5GB plan (EUR 80 pp/21 days).

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, Star Clippers canceled all Asian cruises with pre-scheduled departures in 2020 March 21, 2020, through August 2021.

Operations restarted in 2021 on August 3 (Royal Clipper/Mediterranean from Piraeus-Athens), August 7 (Star Flyer/Mediterranean from Athens) and November 20 (Star Clipper/Southeast Asia).

All affected bookings received full refunds in FCC (future cruise credit) available for rebooking.

Star Clipper: a 4-masted Schooner as a cruise ship

To tell the truth, I hardly knew what to expect when I was invited to sail the coast of Costa Rica, that magical Central American country north of Panama and south of Nicaragua.  The ship I would board in Puntarenas, the country’s major Pacific coastal port, was Star Clipper.

It is one of three Sailing Ships Star Clippers operates in sunny climes all over the world. Star Clipper  would be quite unlike any ship I had sailed on in the over 30 cruises I have taken.  The white-hulled beauty is a sleek “Clipper Ship”, a breed of ship that plied the seven seas before steam or coal or combustible engines forever changed ocean travel.

STAR CLIPPER CATAMARAN

STAR CLIPPER CATAMARAN

The childhood dream of a Swedish yachtsman named Mikael Krafft, Star Clippers now numbers three ships. In addition to Star Clipper, her twin sister is called Star Flyer  and the flagship of the fleet is Royal Clipper is the largest of all three.  I am a devotee of today’s beautiful cruise ships, magnificent vessels that carry passengers all over the world in luxury and style.

What, I wondered, would it be like to sail with the wind as our propeller?  How would I adjust to the smallest ship I’ve ever sailed on?  Would I be able to fit my wardrobe and myself into a cabin of just 118 square feet (11 square meters)?  What would it be like to share a ship with a truly international crowd of German, French, Belgian and Americans, a crew made up of a Polish Captain, German and Spanish officers and Indian sailors and a service staff almost all of whom are Southeast Asians?  It turned out that on all counts, I loved every minute.

FIRST, THERE’S THE VESSEL ITSELF

At 379 feet long, with a beam of 49 feet and carrying just 166 guests and 74 crew, Star Clipper is likely the closest I will ever get to sailing in an enormous private yacht.  There’s no mistaking Star Clipper for anything other than the most nautical of experiences. The teak decks, the brass fittings, the mahogany woodwork bear all the marks of their glorious forbearers. The interiors are a reminder of that golden age.

Any doubts I had about my cabin were quickly erased. Despite its small size, everything hhd its place and there truly was a place for everything. On Commodore deck, the lowest of four, #110 had plenty of closet space, a small flatscreen TV with a DVR for in-cabin movies and safety drills, a hair dryer, a radio, a telephone and a safe. There were great reading lamps by the bed, and a brass-fitted porthole with a view so close to the ocean, it often splashed right over the glass. The bathroom was a model of functionality with more toiletries than one person could ever use. Cabin service was superb. “Sonny”, my Filipino steward, worked like a flash and made up the room the moment I left it. Turndown service and an after-dinner chocolate came right at the Cocktail Hour.

ON STAR CLIPPER, THEY MEAN WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT “SETTING SAIL”

Star Clipper is built to be powered by the prevailing winds.  But there is a back-up motor that runs on pure low-sulphur gas, so environmentally friendly, it was given an award: The International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate.   And there’s a generator that provides all modern conveniences like air conditioning—a must in the warm weather climates Star Clipper calls home. The 16 sails are simply magnificent, and the crew goes to great effort to raise and lower them, to light them at night and to unfurl them whenever the wind blows. On our sailing we didn’t encounter many breezy days. This may have been a blessing as there are no stabilizers to steady the ride in rougher seas.  Smooth sailing aside, there’s no mistaking Star Clipper for anything other than a sailing ship. Star Clipper isn’t for the less agile. There are plenty of stairs to climb and ropes to step over.  Several ports feature ‘wet landings’ where you disembark down a long stairway, into a tender and then “splash land “ into a couple of feet of water.

THE STAR CLIPPER EXPERIENCE IS REALLY ABOUT FUN!

It takes very little time to realize Star Clipper is all about making passengers happy. And it succeeds. Well over half the guests were past passengers. The Star Clipper experience is all about having a great time. During the day, Star Clipper concentrates on sun and fun. There’s an eager young Sports Staff that presides over activities ranging from morning exercises to all manner of water toys— kayaks, waterboards, diving and snorkeling equipment.  Stops at deserted bays and beaches are a highlight of the Costa Rican itinerary.  Meanwhile back on board, you can don a safety harness and climb the ropes up to the Crow’s Nest.  You can lounge on the bowsprit.  Or you can sit around one of two refreshing pools in full sun or under shade.

You’ll never be puckish because you can eat 6 times a day. “Meal occasions” range from Early Riser Breakfast, to an ever- changing international Breakfast Buffet, a ‘themed’ Buffet at lunch, cocktail hour offerings by the outdoor Paradise Bar. Finally dinner is served course by course in a lovely dining room that serves all guests at a single seating. Late night nibbles? You’ll never go hungry aboard Star Clipper.

SEEING COSTA RICA WITH STAR CLIPPER

Nearly half a million species of animals populate Costa Rica’s lush tropical forests. That makes Costa Rica one of the most bio-diverse countries on earth.  As Star Clipper sailed the coast of the country from one end to the other, we had amazing opportunities to view the plant and animal life up close.  Dropping anchor close to Manuel Antonio National Park, recognized as the jewel of Costa Rica’s National parks, the shore excursion almost guaranteed wildlife and tropical bird sightings. It did not disappoint.

STAR CLIPPER Monkey

Further shore excursions on our voyage included kayaking through mangrove forests, canopy forest tours, unspoiled coves and beaches reached by catamaran where snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing awaited. And along the way we were greet with the expression “Pura Vida” by the great people of Costa Rica, the national motto of this very special country.  Other sailings dip into Panama and its natural treasures.

GETTING TO COSTA RICA IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK

San Jose (SJO), Costa Rica’s capital, has the country’s largest airport and it’s a 2-hour drive from Puntarenas where Star Clipper sails from. Her European passengers had a choice of 6 gateways direct to Costa Rica. Flights leave from Paris, London, Frankfort, Zurich, Madrid and Amsterdam

No fewer than 11 US Cities have direct flights to San Jose. I was astonished to discover San Jose is just 4:25 from New York – far closer and quicker to get to than California.  And it’s on Central Time so jet lag presents no problems.  Canadians can fly direct from both Montreal and Toronto.

PRACTICAL MATTERS

Star Clipper doesn’t fall into the all-inclusive category of cruises.  You’ll find a welcome plate of cookies and fruit and a bottle of water in your stateroom, and you won’t be ‘nickeled and dimed’ and you certainly won’t go hungry. But you will have to shell out for your drinks …in Euros. However, those drinks represent a bargain. The “Daily Drink Special”, leans heavily on Umbrella drinks, for 5 Euros. Wines are truly a bargain. I ordered bottles of great Rose again and again for 16 Euros. Shore excursions are reasonably priced.

STAR CLIPPER Outdoor Tropical bar

Gratuities aren’t included. The recommended amounts won’t break the bank:  Suggested is a 5 Euro tip per person per day for the waitstaff and 3 Euros per person per day for the cabin steward.  If you’re not carrying Euros, you can add these to your final bill using a US Credit card.  Star Clipper pools tips to cabin stewards and waitstaff so they encourage you to use the provided envelopes for both. For shore excursions, tour guides and drivers’ tips are at your discretion…but please do!

Then there’s the matter of the Internet .  Star Clippers sells packages for 1 hour or 4 hours of WiFi use.  The 4-hour package makes good sense. But you must log out every time you’ve checked your email or posted on Instagram. Otherwise, the meter keeps on ticking. Massages are a popular additional expense. The fee for a massage is reasonable by any standard.

On board Star Flyer and Star Clipper the Commodore Deck offers four categories of stateroom, the lead-in staterooms offering 86 square feet of space with upper/lower berths and a compact bathroom with shower, but we'd suggest opting for at least the 118-square-foot Category 5, 4 or 3 cabins of varying designs with double beds and bathrooms with shower. For more space upgrade to the Clipper Deck and a Large Outside Cabin of 129 square feet with double bed and bathroom with shower, or the Main or Sun Deck, each of which feature a 156-square-foot Deluxe Deck Cabin featuring a minibar, bathroom with bathtub and cabin doors that open onto deck. Finally, the spacious 237-square-foot Owner's Cabin offers a sitting area, bathroom with bathtub and mini bar.

On Royal Clipper, the layout is very similar, except the the main deck offers a 156-square-foot Deluxe Deck Cabin featuring a minibar, bathroom with whirlpool and cabin doors that open onto deck, and a 280-square-foot Deluxe Outside Suite with a private verandah, sitting area, minibar, bathroom with whirlpool and room service, while the Owner's Suite has no private verandah but offers two double beds, a separate sitting area, minibar, bathroom with whirlpool and room service with 430 square feet of space. All accommodation includes a private bathroom, flatscreeen TV/DVD player (except category 6) and under bed storage.

Onboard activities and facilities on Windstar

The atmosphere on board Windstar is relaxed and largely unstructured, perfect if you're looking for a more chilled out cruising experience. When it comes to entertainment, it's typically low key - you might enjoy an acoustic duo in the bar after dinner, or a band playing classic Beatles songs in the Lounge. Every evening there is a destination briefing to prepare you for the following day, and every cruise includes a deck barbecue (weather permitting) with music and entertainment. An open bridge policy means you can visit the captain and his crew.

On selected sailings on board all of Windstar's small ships - check with us before booking - a marina is deployed, making a day anchored in a secluded bay even more special. There are plenty of time for swimming, watersports and snorkelling - all perfectly suited to the line's enormous variety of warm water voyages - and all snorkelling equipment, paddle boards and kayaks are complimentary. Then, there's a compact but well equipped gym, the World Spa by Windstar on all ships with a range of invigorating treatments, pool, two whirlpools, small boutique and a library.

Onboard activities and facilities on Star Clippers

You're encouraged to involved on board Star Clippers, including the chance to watch the crew repair the sails on a giant sewing machine, knot tying and navigation classes, or even (not for the faint-hearted) climb the mast (with safety harness provided) to one of the passenger lookout crow's nests. Guests can also take part in the Talent Show alongside the crew to showcase their talents, dress like a pirate on Pirate Night as well as get involved in fashion shows and music trivia. The Captain frequently recalls stories from his career, and local musicians come on board for live band performances.

You can also enjoy yoga and, on Royal Clipper only, complimentary water sports such as kayaking, water-skiing and windsurfing from the marina. Across all three ships there's also a boutique, sun decks with seating and loungers, two saltwater splash pools, a library with a fireplace and, on Royal Clipper, a spa - or you can enjoy spa treatments in the below decks or open air on the two smaller ships.

Bars and socialising on Windstar

Windstar guests will enjoy an attentive team of officers and crew who are totally engaged with the guests, a commitment to creating magical and memorable moments on board, and a laid back style we refer to as 'the Big Chill'.

The Compass Rose bar offers indoor and outdoor seating with low key entertainment after dinner, with talks and destination briefings that take place in the Lounge, and you can swing by the Yacht Club during the day for snacks and speciality teas and coffees. The Pool Bar is a popular sunset spot and the Terrace Bar is the place to enjoy a fine cigar, while the popular Star Bar on the Star Plus ships is the place to be for al fresco drinks on the top deck.

Bars and socialising on Star Clippers

The experience on board a Star Clippers cruise is sociable with a warm, welcoming atmosphere in their three bars, including the convivial indoor/outdoor Tropical Bar on the main deck that hosts evening events and pre-dinner cocktails and canapés - guests can even sleep here on deck under the stars.

Then, the intimate, wraparound Piano Bar offers fun singalongs at night, while the small Pool Bar on the top deck has space for 12, perfect for sunset watching.

Itineraries and shore excursions on Windstar

These sociable ships have plenty of outdoor space, perfect for soaking up the sun in warm weather destinations like the Greek Islands or the Caribbean, though you'll find that most of your fellow guests are keen to get off the ship and explore whenever you're in port. As the ships are so small you can swim in the sea right off the back of the yacht as you call at smaller ports and lesser-visited bays, and itineraries are designed in such a way that you can combine a series of cruises to create a long voyage of exploration - look out for these, which often represent extraordinary value.

Shore excursions are not included, although some cruises include a complimentary Destination Discovery such as a private beach party on Tahiti cruises, performances by local artists in Iceland and dining among the ruins of Ephesus on some Mediterranean cruises. Excursions can be booked pre cruise from three categories: Essentials, which Windstar say are for 'first-time visitors who want to see the must-see sights'; Concierge, for more hands-on experiences, largely centered around culture and cuisine, limited to smaller groups; and the Beyond Ordinary category for unique and exclusive experiences.

Itineraries and shore excursions on Star Clippers

The Star Clippers' fleet summers in the Mediterranean, with itineraries featuring the Greek Isles, Amalfi Coast, and French Riviera. In winter they cross the ocean to explore the Caribbean as well as Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. You can expect to find a number of kindred spirits who have chosen this type of adventure, rather than a more conventional cruise ship.

Excursions include the likes of guided tours, wine tasting boat trips, jeep safaris, kayaking, bike rikes, volcano explorations and more, many of which can be booked beforehand and some which must be booked while on board.

All Things Cruise

Three of the world’s largest and tallest sailing (cruise) ships – a life-long dream come true

Story and Photos by Judy Zimmerman Special to AllThingsCruise

Royal Clipper

Swedish ship-owner, Michael Krafft, has realized his lifelong dream to provide  unique sailing experiences which are often away from ports congested with tourists.

Before Kraftt’s elegant 170-passenger identical Star Clipper and Star Flyer were commissioned in 1991, he meticulously researched the Golden Age of tall, swift sailing ships in order  to reflect their nostalgia and romance.  He also wanted to provide the luxury of a modern mega-yacht at affordable prices.

The success of the twin Clipper Sisters in the 90’s convinced Krafft that in 2000 the time had come to launch the 227-passenger Royal Clipper , now the largest true sailing clipper ship in the world.

Although passengers are not required to assist the crew in sailing the three Clipper ships, they have opportunities to help with the lines or take the helm.  Some even opt to climb the mast to the crow’s nest for a panoramic view of the horizon.

“It’s a real kick for an experienced sailor to watch how the crew handles a fully-rigged boat,” said passenger Jack Mallinekrodt from Southern CA.  “On the Wind Surf cruise ship, they just push buttons to control the sails.  On the Star Clippers, much of this is done by hand.”

At sea, Royal Clipper is always under sail power except when weather or sea conditions require she be assisted by her twin 2,500 horsepower diesel engines.

Royal Clipper dinning room

The rich décor of the Clipper ships is reminiscent of its proud heritage.  Polished brass and gleaming mahogany, an Edwardian-style library with Belle Epoque fireplace (plus two computers).   The convivial indoor-outdoor Tropical Bar and Piano Bar all boast antique prints and paintings of famous sailing ships.

But the most dazzling of the interior spaces is the majestic dining room.  An open atrium begins at the Piano Lounge on the Main Deck with a spiral staircase that ends at the center of the Dining Room three decks below.  Soft piano music filters through the dining room during the open-seated evening meal which features excellent international cuisine and a no-tie dress code.

2012-12-17 14 55 35

Although room service is not available, it’s only a short walk from any cabin to get a sunrise cup of coffee at the bar.  Better yet, a ship’s officer always welcomes a friendly chat on deck.

Typically, about half the passengers are from the U.S. and most of the others are from France and Germany.  The Cruise Director makes announcements in all three languages and the currency on board is the Euro.

Most of the low-key social activities take place on deck next to the Tropical Bar (where smoking is permitted).  They include talent shows, crab racing, star-gazing and amateur entertainment by local performers.   According to many guests (myself included!), it’s this easy-going informality that contributes to making the cruise so enjoyable.

The ship, however, is not appropriate for persons with mobility issues, as there are lots of stairs (no elevator) and getting from the ship to the tender can be challenging.

There are three very small swimming are pools aboard and  the Captain Nemo Spa and Health Club.

In port, a convenient marina platform lowers from the stem for watersports.  Snorkeling, kayaking, sunfish sailing, wind surfing, and water skiing are complimentary.  Scuba diving is available for a fee and certification is required.

Some of divers reported that the diving and snorkeling opportunities were much better on previous cruises.

When we sailed away from each port , the sails were raised with great ceremony as the moving “Conquest of Paradise” by Vangelis played on the loudspeakers.

To get a feel for the majesty of the three Clipper ships under sail, I recommend you watch the 10-minute video “Tall Ship Cruises that Dreams are Made of,” at www.starclippers.com . Select the “Explore” tab at the top of the screen.

Royal Clipper sails one-week itineraries in the Western Mediterranean, the Star Clipper in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Star Flyer in Northern Europe, France, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

SPRING TO FALL

All three ships also offer Grand Voyages of 12-18 days from April to October.

FALL AND WINTER

Royal Clipper offers weekly round-trip voyages from Barbados to the Grenadines and the Star Clipper , round-trips from St. Maarten.

The Star Flyer sails through the Panama Canal to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama.

Star Clipper Cruise Ship: 15 Interesting Facts About the Sailing Vessel

' src=

Star Clipper is appealing when you look at her from the outside. Her 16 sails are awe-inspiring, with countless ropes and crew to make them work harmoniously.

But there’s much more to Star Clipper than meets the eye. Her build and program intricacies unfolded as we sailed for a week in Costa Rica. Interesting things about Star Clipper sailing cruise ship abound; we share them all below.

Disclosure: This post has affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission if you click the link and proceed with a purchase at no cost to you. 1. Star Clipper is a Multi-Lingual Ship for Guests

Every cruise we have ever been on has crew members from multiple countries. Thus, the languages spoken on board are many.

However, one of the interesting things about Star Clipper is that the daily program is written in three languages: English, German, and French.

Announcements on board were first recited in English then in German when we sailed because there were a lot of German-speaking passengers on our cruise.

Even the library on Star Clipper is multilingual: there are shelves for books in various languages, including Swedish, English, French, German, and Dutch.

2. Star Clipper Marries Classic Ships of Yesteryear with Modern Day

We were immediately struck by the nautical vibe of the classic sailing ship when we embarked on Star Clipper. Plenty of dark-colored wood with rope motifs was used as decoration in several places, from signage to dining room plates.

But while the ship has the beauty of a centuries-old vessel, it’s a fully modernized sailing boat in many ways. A perfect example is the plastic credit card-like Ship IDs used to scan passengers in/out of the ship. Yet physical keys are used for cabin-door access.

Your Ship ID card can also be used for all onboard purchases, including at the bar and the Sloop Shop.

3. Star Clipper is Modeled After Classic Sailing Ships

Mikael Krafft, the owner of Star Clippers cruises, fulfilled a lifelong dream when he started the company.

He grew up in Sweden, 20 km outside of Stockholm. Here, he would see the classic Clipper ships come in and out of one of the largest shipyards in the world. A passion for sailing was quickly formed, and years later, his dream of owning his own sailboats was realized.

While sailing aboard his ship “Gloria,” he came up with the idea to start a cruise line. Star Clipper and Star Flyer were built first, followed by Royal Clipper some years later.

The Star Clippers website states, “His dream was to recreate the legendary clippers that crossed the oceans in the 19th century and in doing so offer people the chance to experience the unique thrill of sailing aboard a Tall Ship.”

4. The On Board Currency is Euros

The official currency of the ship is the Euro. While you certainly don’t have to have euros on hand as a passenger, it’s good to know that any price you see is for euros. While I initially thought my cocktail was $6 USD and Dan’s glass of champagne for the sail away party was $7.50, we quickly remembered that the price was in euros, not US dollars.

This doesn’t matter much when the exchange rate is practically even, but it’s good to keep in mind when it’s not.

Additionally, it’s good to remember when you get your final bill and final credit card charge; if your home currency is USD, your credit card statement will show a different amount than the final bill on the ship, taking the currency conversion into account.

5. There is Always a Cocktail of the Day

Who doesn’t love a great drink while cruising? The drinks onboard are incredibly affordable but even more so when a drink is featured as the drink of the day.

For example, the first day we sailed, it was a Pina Colada, and the second day it was a Melon Ball. The third day offered a Mai Tai, the fourth day it was an Aperol Spritz, etc.

star clipper yacht owner

6. Display Food is Set Out Nightly to Showcase the Dinner Plates

They say you eat with your eyes before your mouth or stomach. In the same vein, Star Clippers displays the evening’s dishes in the early evening each day, around 6:00 pm, so you can see the dish before you order it.

To see them, make a point to stop at the Piano Bar area, where they’re on display.

star clipper yacht owner

7. Star Clipper Doesn’t Have Balcony Cabins, but They Do Have Portholes

It’s very popular these days for cruise ships to have balconies, whether a Panorama balcony like on Emerald Cruises river cruise ships or a full balcony like on a Celebrity Cruises ship, like Celebrity Apex.

But Star Clipper harkens back to the classic sailing days when portholes alone were considered a cabin luxury. Most rooms have at least one porthole. All guest cabins are on either decks 1, 2, or 3.

Deck three has eight cabins that are the biggest onboard by square footage. Their doors open to the outside. Though they have a porthole on their door, which opens to an outdoor deck, they do not have their own balcony.

star clipper yacht owner

8. The Shower is Part of the Bathroom (in Most Cabins)

Star Clipper cabins remind us of bathrooms we’ve experienced in other countries, like Norway. The shower is very much a part of the bathroom, without a separate tiled space or delineation that goes into another structure, so to speak.

Our cabin bathroom floor was ever-so-slightly sloped towards a floor drain in the corner of the bathroom. A shower curtain slid around the space to create a shower surrounding the shower head on the wall above the floor drain.

Some cabins, like a Category 3 cabin we could see, had a slightly separated area in the bathroom for the shower.

9. The Ship May Feel Like a Maze, but You Quickly Figure It Out

The ship feels a bit like a maze the first day you’re onboard, with several dead ends forcing you to turn around, go upstairs, and go back down in another area, or vice versa. But you quickly figure it out because the ship isn’t that big.

We could make sense of the ship layout within 24 hours of being onboard. There is also signage and ship maps throughout the vessel to help you navigate.

star clipper yacht owner

10. Star Clipper is a True Sailing Ship…with Many Sails

With four masts and 16 sails, you can be sure that Star Clipper is a true sailing ship.

In fact, she has 36,220 square feet of sails that can be repaired or altered on the onboard sewing machine. (If you’re wondering, the mast height of Star Clipper, where the sails attach, is 206 feet.)

The ship, of course, also has an engine for instances when there isn’t enough wind to keep the boat in motion.

star clipper yacht owner

11. Weather Permitting, You Can Climb to Star Clipper’s  Crow’s Nest

There is a Crow’s Nest lookout platform on one of the ship's masts. Weather and signed “Sports Waiver” permitting, one of the Star Clippers onboard activities is to climb to the platform.

To do this, you sign up with the Sports Team during designated times of your cruise. Then, when it’s your turn, a tethered safety rope is fastened to you and the ship via a harness. Then you climb your way to the platform along a rope ladder up to the Crow’s Nest.

12. The Knot in the Carpet is a Sheet Knot

Some creative activities are on board, including a knot-tying class that a member of the Sports Team teaches.

During the class, you learn to tie a Sheet Knot, the same knot in the patterned carpet on the ship.

star clipper yacht owner

13. You Can Lay in the Bowsprit Net Towards the Front of the Ship

Want to feel like a rockstar on Star Clipper? The bowsprit net is where you want to be!

If the weather is favorable and the ship isn’t rocking too much, grab sunscreen and some water (it can get hot out there) and head to the bowsprit net. The net allows you to lay over the water, free of the ship’s wooden floor beneath you.

star clipper yacht owner

14. There are Mulitple Flags Raised on the Ship Everyday

The Star Clippers flag is raised daily and taken down each night. It’s a blue flag with three stars. Additionally, a flag is raised for the country the ship is in.

So, for example, while we sailed the Pacific coastline of Costa Rica, the country's red, white, and blue-striped flag was raised and flown alongside the Star Clippers flag every day.

star clipper yacht owner

15. There is a Crew Fund

The Crew Fund helps crew should they need extra financial help for personal reasons (such as needing to return to their home country in case of a family emergency). Or, the money sometimes goes to the entire crew, like providing extra funds for a crew party.

During our cruise, a special map was raffled off. The proceeds from the raffle ticket sales went to the Crew Fund.

Conclusion of Interesting Things about Star Clipper

This truly beautiful sailing ship has many wonderful things about the design and crew, inside and out, that will intrigue and delight you during your cruise.

It’s all the more reason to sign up for a Star Clipper adventure. Be sure to take note of all her wonderful intricacies as you sail on the classic vessel.
