Oceanco Project-Bravo

America’s 10 Best Yacht Builders

Yacht At Last side view

In America, the yachting industry might not be as established. Yet, today, America’s best luxury yacht builders continue to put out award-winning and state-of-the-art designs. Who are America’s best yacht builders?

From Christensen to Trinity, we countdown the best yacht builders in America and highlight what makes each shipyard unique. Here are our favorites:

1. Christensen

Christensen is one of the most established yacht builders in the U.S., and the company is known for its completely custom yachts. Each yacht the company produces is designed according to owner specifications.

Known for its classic hull design, and upscale finishes, Christensen produces some of the most luxurious superyachts in the U.S. That’s thanks in part to the builder’s in-house design team. Many other builders outsource design. Plus, the builder is known for its exquisite interiors, featuring spacious layouts and the finest finishes. Christensen also regularly wins innovation awards for their efficient and powerful displacement systems and state-of-the-art stabilization.

2. Westport

Since 1964, Westport has been a leader in yacht design and manufacturing in the U.S. And its earned a reputation for developing sporty, classically-styled superyachts.

That wasn’t always the case. Originally, Westport designed and built commercial fishing vessels, but today, Westport focuses exclusively on luxury motor yachts, including 34-, 38-, 40- and 50-meter yachts. Westport’s raised pilothouse and tri-deck yachts feature classic nautical hulls with modern touches. The interiors are sleek and comfortable and known for their spacious outdoor deck areas.

3. Derecktor

Derecktor is one of the country’s oldest yacht builders. It was founded on Long Island, NY in 1947, and during its early years, the company produced commercial fishing and passenger vessels. (Even today, Derecktor manufacturers high-speed ferries for cities around the world.)

Derecktor’s output has changed quite a bit in its 70-year history. Today, the company continues to build commercial vessels, but it’s also a top builder of custom motor yachts. Derecktor produces both explorer yachts and motor yachts, and many of its luxury motor yachts feature explorer-inspired designs. Many Derecktor yachts, for example, feature towering superstructures positioned forward. This opens up an abundance of aft-deck space for outdoor dining areas, beach clubs, and even helipads.

In addition to style, Derecktor yachts are renowned for their performance. They might be sizable. But they’re fast, and the ride is stable.

4. Hatteras

Hatteras is a legendary name in American shipbuilding, known for its high-speed and beautiful motor yachts. Initially, the shipyard focused entirely on sportfish yachts – something they’re still known for today. Yet, the company’s line-up of motor yachts offers the best of the best in luxury yachting.

Hatteras offers a full range of superyachts, including the 100 RPH, a stunning 102-foot raised pilothouse motoryacht, and the M90. Hatteras certainly shows its sporty roots in all of its designs; Hatteras exteriors are sleek and streamlined, sharing design details with its sportfish line.

At Trinity , size is the name of the game. The Gulfport-based shipyard produces yachts up to 123 meters (400 feet), including some of the largest luxury yachts ever built in the U.S.

The yachtbuilder has many signatures. For example, classic nautical architecture is one. Trinity produces some of the most inspiring superstructure designs that feature sleek lines and an abundance of glass. When you charter a Trinity yacht, you’ll have plenty of places to relax, as most of their designs incorporate an abundance of deck space. In the past, that’s include beautiful sky lounges and sprawling aft-deck dining/bar areas.

Below deck, Trinity yachts delivers spacious layouts. The yachtbuilder is know for their opulent owner’s suites and staterooms, as well as stunning salons.

6. Broward Marine

Founded by legendary boatbuilder Frank Denison in the 1950s, Broward Marine has been a leader in superyacht design throughout its history. For example, in 1954, Broward launched its first luxury superyacht, ALISA V. At the time, the 96-footer was a behemoth – similar in grandness to today’s megayachts of 150+ feet.

The Alisa paved a path for the company, which shifted its focus exclusively to luxury motoryachts. In the 1980s, for example, Broward was quick to respond to the trend of the superyachts; Broward sold some 80 yachts in the 1980s, an impressive sales feat.

Under new management in the early 2000s, the company continued its focus on stunning megayachts in the 100- to 160-foot range. Broward yachts are grand in scale, with stunning tri-deck and raised pilothouse designs, and they’re also some of the first to feature farmhouse kitchens. Today, the company focuses primarily on refits, but many of their majestic yachts are still available for charter.

7. Hargrave

Hargrave has been producing yachts since the 1950s, and throughout its history, the shipyard has built a reputation for inspiring yacht designs. In fact, the company initially only focused on design. Founder Jack Hargrave, the famed nautical designer, worked closely with other top U.S. yacht builders including Burger and Hatteras, helping to launch numerous brands.

In 1997, the company transitioned from design to designing and building its own luxury yachts. The company quickly made a name for itself. Hargrave has won numerous awards for its sporty tri-decks and sportfish-inspired motoryachts. Hargrave yachts feature contemporary interiors, matched with sleek profiles.

A Horizon yacht has a distinctive look. The company’s yachts have stately exteriors with tons of classic nautical architectural details. Inside, too, Horizon yachts have a lot of character. Most Horizon yachts feature sprawling windows, creating light and airy interior spaces.

Today, the company produces yachts in the 56- to 150-foot range, and their offerings include power catamarans, tri-decks and raised pilothouse motor yachts.

If you’re looking for a power cat, that’s a Horizon specialty. The company’s PC Series features a range of mid-sized power cats up to about 80 feet, with numerous concept yachts in the works. Yet, Horizon does it all. You’ll find Horizon yachts in just about any style, from Fast Displacement yachts (FD Series), to customized tri-decks (CC Series).

The Burger Boat Company is one of the most historic shipbuilders in the U.S. Originally launched in 1863, the company has built more than 500 yachts in its history (more than 250 of which are still in operation). The company was a pioneer in steel yacht building, but today, Burger primary builds aluminum yachts.

Burger produces a range of custom tri-deck motor yachts, ranging from 112- to 214-foot motor yachts. Burger boats have a distinctive look and feel. They have spacious deck areas, like the wrap-around deck on its current 214-foot tri-deck concept, as well as innovative exterior lounge areas.

10. Delta Marine

For more than 50 years, Delta Marine has been producing world-class motor yachts from its headquarters in Seattle. The boatbuilder is known for its sleek exterior designs. Delta Marine yachts feature clean, flowing lines throughout, and the company produces a range of raised pilothouse and tri-deck motor yachts.

Plus, the interiors are completely custom. As such, no two Delta Marine yachts look the same, and the interiors are as unique as their owners. Delta yachts are also well-known for their performance. Many feature performance-minded hulls, and feature state-of-the-art displacement systems.

The Best Luxury Yacht Builders in the World

With build times of around four years, it pays to know which shipbuilder is best for your dream superyacht.

By Kim Ayling

Black pearl - Hybrid superyacht

The superyacht industry has refound its mojo. Following the turbulence of the pandemic, yacht builders have resumed business as usual. Following recent growth in the UHNW population, order books remain full. New superyachts are rolling off the production line at an impressive rate of knots. If you’re considering a new superyacht now, you’ll be waiting over three years to take delivery of a ground-up build. Go with one of the leading yacht builders in the world, though, and it’ll be worth the wait.

This list of luxury yacht builders not only looks at what they have done in the past but also celebrates the stellar efforts they are making to reduce the environmental impact of their products. From lighter materials and onboard energy solutions to hybrid motors and marine conservation funding, these luxury yacht builders are not only leading the superyacht industry’s future but also protecting the oceans.

feadship project 817 superyacht

Recognized as a world leader in building pure custom yachts, Feadship has been in pursuit of building the perfect ship since its inception in 1949 – although the brand can trace its roots back another 100 years. With each new ship that Feadship builds, its team employs the most cutting-edge methods and materials available, which when paired with its unpromising attitude toward fulfilling its clients’ desires, promises to deliver some of the most technically advanced yachts in the world – including Project 817 , which has now been delivered as Viva.

Viva remains a groundbreaking yacht build, with Feadship revealing ambitious aims to keep her environmental impact as low as possible. The 308-ft eco-friendly yacht features an advanced hybrid propulsion system that allows the yacht to travel at 12 knots on diesel-electric power. The ship’s hull has been designed with efficiency as a priority to reduce the energy needed to travel through the water.

The Dutch company has locations throughout The Netherlands, with its headquarters and design and engineering center found in the northern city of Haarlem.

oceanco yacht builders esquel project on water

Dutch yacht building outfit Oceanco was initially founded in 1987 – but it was only in 2002 (when Oceanco found itself in the hands of new owners) that the switch was made to focusing on 260-foot plus superyachts, drawing on old-world Dutch craftsmanship to build the yachts of the future. The award-winning company prides itself on its design-led builds, and in addition to employing its own forward-thinking design team, works with industry-leader designers such as Andrew Winch, Terence Disdale and Sam Sorgiovanni.

Environmental awareness is core to each Oceanco project, with the aim of not only meeting but surpassing environmental legislation with each build. Even its largest yacht to date – the 394-foot Redentore, which is still under construction – is impressively efficient thanks to her hybrid propulsions system, which keeps fuel consumption to a minimum. Other noteworthy Oceanco’s builds are the striking three-masted Black Pearl , which is powered by a combination of wind power and electric propulsion motors, and one of its latest concepts, Esquel  – an advanced expedition vessel.

Most notably, Oceanco delivered the world’s largest sailing yacht, Koru , to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The colossal 417-ft vessel cost a rumored $500m to build and was delivered in 2023. It has since been spotted in Italy, Florida and the South of France. Perhaps more impressive than the yacht itself is the support vessel (built by Damen Yachting), a 250-ft superyacht-in-its-own-right capable of carrying a wealth of billionaire toys including submersibles, helicopters and cars.

Electra Superyacht

Dutch luxury shipbuilder Heesen has received worldwide recognition for its engineering and design prowess since launching in 1978. Heesen proudly pioneers the use of aluminum, which is widely regarded as the premium yacht-building material thanks to its lightness owing to better efficiency. As well as full custom builds, Heesen offers a platform concept that features semi-custom yachts already under construction in order to dramatically cut down delivery waits, without compromising on quality.

One of Heesen’s most notable yachts is Alive, which was the first to feature the revolutionary Hull Vane technology (underwater foil) for greater efficiency and speed, resulting in up to 30% less fuel consumption than a regular yacht. Other celebrated Heesen’s builds are Home and Electra , delivered in 2017 and 2020 respectively, both of which were in the award-winning 5000 FHDF aluminum hybrid class and came as a result of Heesen’s strive to limit the environmental impact of yachting.

luminosity yacht benetti

Part of the Azimut-Benetti Group, Benetti Yachts can trace its shipbuilding heritage all the way back to 1873 when the Fratelli Benetti shipyard was founded in the Tuscan city of Viareggio – the center of classic Italian shipbuilding. While much has changed in Benetti’s near 150-year lifetime, its focus on building state-of-the-art yachts to impeccably high standards has not, cementing its status as one of the best luxury yacht builders in the world.

As concerns on the environmental impact of private yachts have grown over time, Benetti has adapted its methods accordingly, utilizing hybrid technology to ensure its ships are at the forefront of sustainability. For example, when the Luminosity was first delivered in 2019 she was hailed as one of the greenest superyachts on the sea. The 352-foot yacht features advanced diesel-electric hybrid power, with her powerful battery providing up to 12 silent and emission-free hours at anchor.

Of course, sustainability doesn’t come at the cost of style: the Luminosity features a stunningly designed interior courtesy of Zaniz Jakubowski, with full-length windows drawing the outside in, and tasteful nods to contemporary artists creating a true home away from home.

Europe rules the roost when it comes to the top yacht builders in the world – the fifth in our list hails from Germany, with eight yards dotted throughout the country including main sites in Bremen, Hamburg and Rensburg. As with most yacht building companies, Lürssen is family run having been first founded in 1870 by Friedrick Lürssen. Since then the company has developed an esteemed reputation as one of the best in the world, breaking many records along the way, including the longest yacht in the world with Azza in 2015, which measures 592 feet, and Flying Fox which is the largest superyacht available for charter.

Lürssen’s latest superyacht is the sizeable 465.5-foot Nord (previously called Project Opus). Nord transcends the typical design of a superyacht thanks to the work of Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard, which was responsible for the yacht’s striking interior and exterior.

As is becoming standard for leading yacht builders, Lürssen is acutely aware of the negative environmental impact of both building and owning yachts. It is taking appropriate action to help mitigate this damage, including providing significant funding to marine life charities and conservation projects and implementing pioneering technologies such as onboard compact silencers and hybrid motor concepts.

Royal Huisman

Ethereal yacht by royal huisman

With a history that dates back to 1884, Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman proudly stakes a claim as one of the oldest yacht builders in the world. While the company was originally founded to build modest wooden fishing boats, its operations have deftly grown with the times, and Royal Huisman is now responsible for some of the finest and most luxurious yachts cruising the ocean today.

Although best known for its stunning sailing yachts ( Sea Eagle II, Ethereal  and  Aquarius  are particular knock-outs) Royal Huisman has also successfully branched out into the world of motor yachts. Its most recent build is the 192-ft Phi,  which was delivered in 2021. This super-slick aluminum yacht has space for up to 12 guests and since her maiden voyage, has been seen cruising on the Thames through London’s financial district. An apt setting for a yacht of this caliber.

Damen Yachting

Damen Yachting, which falls under the umbrella of the wider Damen Shipyards Group, is another Dutch yacht builder dominating the world stage. Operating as Damen’s building division, Damen Yachting was only formed in its existing state in 2019 and is now responsible for the building of the famous Amels yachts, as well as the SeaXplorer expedition ships and yacht support vessels. Since moving its Amels building operations to Vlissingen in 2003, Damen Shipyards proudly boasts the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands.

As a company of this magnitude, Damen Yachting naturally has some impressive builds under its belt, including the newest in the Limited Editions semi-custom range: the Amels 60 . Currently under construction with an estimated delivery of 2022, the 197-foot Amels 60  uses a fuel-efficient hybrid propulsions system to slash emissions, cut noise pollution and minimize fuel and maintenance costs.

Italian-born Sanlorenzo is continuously regarded as being among the best in class when it comes to yacht builders and has been the recipient of numerous awards in its near-65 year lifetime. Despite Sanlorenzo’s longevity and established status, it remains a truly boutique luxury yacht builder at heart. To ensure the attention to detail and high quality for which it is famous for, as well as securing exclusivity for its clients, Sanlorenzo is committed to working with a limited number of customers each year.

In true Italian style, the superyachts that leave Sanlorenzo’s main La Spezia shipyard transcend trends; instead, they exude classic style and authentic craftsmanship. Combined, this guarantees a truly timeless finish – of which the current flagship Attila is a perfect example. Sanlorenzo specializes in fiberglass, steel and aluminum, ensuring that each owner can select a material to befit their needs.

Despite dating back over a hundred years, German luxury yacht builder Nobiskrug always has one eye on the future with a steadfast commitment to innovation. Nobiskrug offers fully custom yacht builds, working directly with owners to fulfill their unique vision, as well as working on ship refits. The company operates out of world-class yacht-building facilities in the city of Rendsburg, which include a climate-controlled superyacht hall.

The need to strive for innovation extends to Nobiskrug’s environmental commitments, where it applies advanced technologies in order to limit the impact of its builds. For example, Artefact – which was first delivered in 2020 – was one of the first superyachts to be built in line with the IMO Tier III regulations (which focus on reducing emissions). Artefact uses onboard solar panels and a battery storage system to allow for a limited period of engineless operation, as well as adopting a waste-water recycling system.

Lürssen

The German name tops the list, having built 11 out of 20 of the world’s largest superyachts in the last two decades. The 145-year-old family shipyard’s largest yacht, Azzam , spans 592 feet, 6 inches. Imagine six football fields laid end to end, with dozens of staterooms and saloons filled with beautiful woodwork, custom furniture, and art, all inside a high-tech hull. That 2013 launch was followed by others like 512-foot Dilbar and this year’s 364-foot Project Tis .

Still owned and managed by the Lürssen family, the company’s ability to consistently produce so many floating masterpieces is directly proportional to its skilled workforce and vast facilities. After recent acquisitions, including the famed Blohm & Voss yard, Lürssen owns eight shipyards across Germany. Its staff, some of the most experienced of any superyacht builder, include 400 designers, 600 engineers, 1,600 skilled workers, and 200 apprentices.

After launching the company in 1875, Friedrich Lürssen declared: “My firm shall be known as a leader in both quality and performance.”

With his name attached to the world’s largest yachts , Friedrich’s words have taken on a greater significance than he could ever have imagined.

Abeking & Rasmussen

Located across the river from Lürssen’s Lemwerder yard, Abeking & Rasmussen has created advanced running surfaces, like its Swath hull that skips over turbulent ocean waves rather than pounding across. The name is known for commercial and military vessels as well as custom yachts.

Its award winners include the 237-foot Cloudbreak , which set new design standards for expedition yachts, and the 244-foot Elandess , featuring its “Nemo Lounge” with a window below the waterline. Abeking’s flagship, the 321-foot Aviva , is unique among yachts its size with an unmatched interior volume that includes a regulation-sized paddle-tennis court .

The 112-year-old yard is typically ahead of the latest trends. It is developing a hybrid fuel cell powered by methanol that emits only clean steam. The system could well be the first hydrocarbon-emissions-free propulsion in the yachting world.

Feadship Amsterdam Yard

Formed as a group in 1949, Feadship is probably the most famous name among the Dutch builders. Feadship is comprised of the De Vries and Van Lent family yards, with locations in Aalsmeer, Makkum, Kaag, and Amsterdam. The group also includes De Voogt Naval Architects .

Feadship, credited with dozens of custom launches over the last seven decades, has grown into Holland’s superyacht powerhouse. In the 2015, it launched 333-foot Symphony , the first Feadship to cross the 100-meter mark. Faith , a stunning 312-footer launched two years later, has a streamlined profile and helicopter pad with hangar on the foredeck and swimming pool with glass floor (forming the ceiling of the beach club below) on the aft deck.

Last year, Feadship launched a half-dozen other yachts, including 241-foot Sherpa . Its expedition-yacht exterior, including two industrial-looking exhaust stacks on the aft cockpit, shows Feadship’s design capabilities. Its Project 814, with its vertical bow and long, lean forefoot, will be an example of an entirely new look, when launched later this year.

Specializing in made-to-measure, custom-built superyachts, award-winning builder Nobiskrug produces its vessels out of three different facilities in northern Germany: Rendsburg, Kiel-Gaarden, and Kiel-Friedrichsort. The yard was established in Rendsburg in 1905, shortly after the Kiel Canal opened in 1895. Today Nobiskrug employs more than 1,000 highly skilled craftsmen and women across the three shipyards. In-house production includes hull construction, steel cutting, mechanical work, fitting, pipe fitting, paint, electrical, and carpentry, with these workshops organized under one roof.

Shown above is the brand’s Best of the Best winner A , designed by Philippe Starck and built by Nobiskrug, the yacht is a 470-foot sail-assisted motor yacht that was delivered in 2017.

Representing the future of the company, Nobiskrug’s hybrid superyacht Artefact (ex-project 790) was revealed last fall in Monaco and is scheduled for a 2019 delivery. With an exterior by Canada’s Gregory Marshall Studio and interior by Reymond Langton Design, the yacht features numerous eco-friendly characteristics, such as lower emissions and a quieter ride. It also utilizes a Dynamic Positioning System to hold its position for longer, delaying the need for sea-bed-damaging anchors.

Amels Shipyard

Amels celebrated its centennial in 2018, but the superyacht builder has modern facilities and one of the industry’s smartest business plans. It was acquired by the Damen Group in 1991, which gave it the financial resources and vision to become one of the most respected custom yacht builders. Ten years ago, it launched a Limited Editions range. Built on proven hull platforms from 180 to 272 feet, owners have a choice of customizing both the interior and exteriors. Close to 40 yachts have been delivered since, proving that the disruptive concept has a place in yacht-building.

Oceanco is a relative newcomer, but it has created some of the world’s most beautiful custom superyachts. Names like the recently launched 295-foot DAR are great examples, but the yard has also built technically advanced vessels like the 350-foot sailing superyacht, Black Pearl , with some of the most advanced sails ever designed. Its other award winners like Jubilee , Aquijo , and Infinity , retain their own unique DNA. The yard has worked with the most sought-after yacht designers, including Terence Disdale , Nuvolari-Lenard , Espen Øino , Sam Sorgiovanni , Igor Lobanov , Tim Heywood , and Andrew Winch .

The Alblasserdam yard is working on 357-foot Project Bravo , the first Oceanco with its proprietary LIFE design (lengthened, innovative, fuel-efficient, and eco-friendly). Bravo will combine hybrid propulsion, weight savings, and extra interior space in a package that could be a game-changer for yachting. “Our approach with Bravo was to maintain a stunningly sleek profile without sacrificing interior space,” says designer Dan Lenard. “The new exterior style concept is bound to create a new design stream.”

Among the Dutch builders, Heesen has seen the greatest expansion of its model line, which is available in aluminum and steel. Its recent launches range from the 164-foot futuristic hybrid, Home , to more conventional designs like the 180-foot Laurentia . The yard really started its upward trajectory in 2011 with the simultaneous launches of Quinta Essentia and Satori, two very different yachts that captivated the superyacht world.

Two years later, Galactica Star , the first fast-displacement yacht, showed that Heesen lived in a world where design and technology intersect. Its largest-ever build, 230-foot Galactica Super Nova , was a sign that Heesen can move into larger categories. The yard has drawings of an ultra-modern 83-meter custom Maximus concept, complete with an entirely open cockpit and swimming pool with waterfall, waiting for the right owner.

Benetti is not only the world’s largest superyacht builder, it is also one of the oldest. Started in 1875, the Italian builder always has a parade of custom and semicustom builds. The Azimut Benetti Group now has 97 yachts under build over 78 feet. In the last year, Benetti has launched a range of yachts, including Ironman , its sixth Fast 140, 207-foot custom Metis and 226-foot Spectre .

Benetti also recently launched its largest-ever build, 351-foot FB277, one of three gigayachts currently being built in its Livorno yard. The other two are due to launch this year. The world’s largest superyacht builder continues to push the boundaries in design and technology, as it moves into gigayacht territory that the yards in Northern Europe have dominated for years.

The 262-foot Chopi Chopi was a landmark yacht for CRN when it launched in 2013, showing that the Italian yard could go toe-to-toe with the yards in Northern Europe. Chopi Chopi is still CRN’s largest build to date, but the Ancona facility has launched a succession of custom yachts that have established CRN’s place as the crown jewel of the Ferretti Group. The military exterior of 180-foot Atlante , sleek hull of 239-foot Yalla , or stunning, high-tech interior of its most recent launch, Cloud 9 , show the range of the custom builder.

CRN’s current builds include a 260-foot tri-deck motor yacht, a pair of 203-footers with low superstructures and vertical bows, and a 164-foot Superconero , a modern version of the 1970s SuperConero that defined CRN. Ferretti has invested about $10 million to upgrade the Ancona yard, with plans to invest another $15 million.

Baglietto Shipyard

Baglietto is one of Italy’s most revered yacht names, having started in 1840 when Pieto Baglietto built small wooden fishing boats in his backyard. The company built boats for kings and popes, and put the first combustion engine into an 80-foot yacht in 1906. After being rescued from bankruptcy by the Gavio Group, a multinational corporation owned by a yacht-loving family, Baglietto has experienced a renaissance. Both its production facility, which gained a $25 million facelift, and model line, ranging from 43 to 230 feet, are now state of the art.

Francesco Paszkowski, Italy’s most revered yacht designer, does the lion’s share of design for Baglietto, but the builder recently unveiled other concepts by Milan-based Hot Lab and Santa Maria Magnolfi for its midrange superyachts. Baglietto is offering these very different designs on five proven hull platforms. Its 230-foot flagship is from Mulder Design in the Netherlands.

Rossinavi Aurora

Rossinavi ’s recent launches are some of the most inspired designs in the superyacht world. The 2017 launches, 160-foot  Endeavour II and 161-foot  Aurora , are as different in design as chalk and cheese. The yard worked with Achille Salvagn i on both interiors. Salvagni, known for his stylized residential interiors and whimsical decor, brought a fresh sensibility to both yachts that gave them very distinct personalities.

Last year, the yard launched two more inimitable yachts, 206-foot  Utopia IV and 161-foot  Flying Dagger . Utopia IV is unique among superyachts because of its top end of 33 knots, with transatlantic range. Always on the lookout for new ideas, Rossinavi has unveiled concepts with Pininfarina, designer of many Ferrari models, and the Phantom 62, a sleek, futuristic design by Enrico Gobbi.

Sanlorenzo Superyacht Yard

With headquarters in Ameglia and other yards in Viareggio, Massa, and La Spezia, Sanlorenzo is ranked among the top three builders of yachts over 80 feet. In the last two years it has introduced a 118-foot planing yacht, a 210-foot 64Steel (due out this year), the 171-foot custom Seven Sins —not to mention the flagship of its explorer line, the 164-foot 500EXP Ocean Dreamwalker III , which it launched at the last Monaco Yacht Show . The light-blue steel hull shows the style that Sanlorenzo gives to each new launch.

Since a management restructuring in 2017, Perini Navi has introduced multiple new lines , including its E-volution sailing yacht series and three styles of motor yachts—Argonaut, Heritage, and Voyager. With two yards in Italy and a third in Turkey, Perini now has three sailing yachts under construction, including two 138-foot E-volutions. Its three motor achts under build include two Philippe Briand–designed 53 and 56 Voyagers, as well as its 82-foot hybrid-powered Eco-tender. The brand’s new energy promises a bright future.

When John and Robert Braithwaite started their fledgling boat business in 1969, the two brothers had no idea it would become one of the UK’s most important shipyards. Sunseeker is different from most yards on this list because it builds only in composites up to 155 feet.

Prompted by owner demand, Sunseeker is now venturing into aluminum with its new 161 Yacht. Easily recognized by Sunseeker’s exterior design cues, the 161 will be built by Icon Yachts in Holland. “We are combining the metal build expertise of ICON with our design DNA, technical expertise, and market know-how,” says Sean Robertson, president of Sunseeker USA, adding the new yacht will “absolutely” be a Sunseeker. The 161 will be launched in 2021.

Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts is the other British builder that continues to evolve in interesting, new ways. Established in Plymouth in 1965, Princess has grown into multiple modern production sites measuring more than 1.1 million square feet. Situated in a port with maritime ties that date back centuries, Princess’s South Yard, where the M Class superyachts are built, is a former 17th-century naval yard.

Royal Huisman

Established in 1884, Royal Huisman is one of the oldest shipyards in Holland but one of its most modern. Its waterside facility in Vollenhove totals about 350,000 square feet, with four heated bays to accommodate yachts up to 266 feet. It has another facility in Amsterdam and a third in Emden, with facilities for yachts up to 394 feet. Its fleet of famous sailing superyachts include Gliss, Antares, Hyperiod, Hanuman, Elfie, and Arcadia . Its recent launches include the 190-foot  Ngoni , which has one of the most eclectic interiors ever, and the more classic 184-foot  Aquarius . Though best known for custom sailboats, the yard is currently working on Project Phi, a 180-foot motor yacht designed by Van Ooosannen Naval Architects.

Nautor’s Swan

Finnish builder Nautor’s Swan , founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkyla, has always had its sights on building high-performance sailing yachts with beautiful wood interiors. Koskenkyla enlisted Sparkman & Stephens, designer for many winning America’s Cup yachts, to create its first fiberglass boat. The new boats saw instant racing success.

The builder eventually partnered with German Frers Design. The Frers team, working with 30 Swan designers, is responsible for many innovative designs, including the first Swan 115 S introduced in 2015 at the Monaco show. The 115 was the flagship of the its Maxi division, which includes the Swan 98 , and eventually became the Swan 120.

Nautor’s Swan expanded beyond its historical plant in Kallby in 2002, when it opened a new high-tech facility in Pietarsaari for yachts from 60 to 115 feet. Its Kronoby facility produces its famous wood interiors. The most noteworthy yard in Finland has produced 2,000 Swans since it launched operations.

Westport Yachts

Westport Yachts has been North America’s most prolific superyacht builder since it began building boats in 1969. Its facilities in Westport and Port Angeles, Washington, include enclosed spaces of 170,000 and 100,00 square feet, respectively, with a separate 80,000-square-foot cabinet shop and 4,100-square-foot upholstery shop. Westport has launched more than 140 yachts.

Westport’s success lies in its disciplined approach to yacht building, which involves a production mentality that keeps each build on time and on budget. The builder uses leading-edge machinery, proven coring materials, and components like MTU and Caterpillar engines, Northern Lights generators, and Furuno electronics that bring quality and consistency to the build process.

Its line of the W112, W125, W130 and W164 are contemporary but not ostentatious, with high levels of fit and finish across the yacht. That type of production mentality, which allows for a certain degree of customization, means the yachts are built to the same high standards.

Westport clients appreciate that level of reliability, not to mention resale value, when it comes to yacht ownership.

Delta Marine

Delta Marine is not given much to self-promotion, but the Seattle yard shares the same type of pedigree as many of the top European builders.

Delta Marine Invictus.

Its production quality, skilled labor, and proven ability to turn intricate, complex designs into beautiful, custom superyachts has earned it a place among the world’s top builders. The yard comprises a 25-acre complex in Seattle, with 300,000 square feet of manufacturing space in its state-of-the-art facility. With Boeing headquarters just down the road, and Seattle being a leading tech center, the trickle-down influence on the shipyard is noteworthy. Its collection of custom yachts includes 216-foot  Invictus , 164-foot  Arianna , and 240-foot  Laurel . Recently, an unnamed 204-foot launch was seen on sea trials near the yard.

Overmarine Mangusta El Leon superyacht

The Overmarine Group’s Mangusta brand has been known for speed during its 34-year-history. The Balducci family defined their niche, though the range has expanded to maxi open yachts and long-range yachts. The line extends from 94 to 215 feet LOA, with 300 yachts produced over the years. Its Mangusta Maxi Open series, ranging from 94 to 215 feet, offers speed as well as quietness and stability, in a stylish package. Its 50M (164-footer) is considered an industry icon. The Mangusta Oceano are long-range yachts with ranges up to 5,000 miles.

The Mangusta GranSports are a combination of the two lines, fast-displacement yachts capable of covering long distances. The group has 10 production facilities in Tuscany and Viareggio, Massa, and Pisa that total around two million square feet of indoor and exterior space. It has two wharfs in Viareggio where it does the final work on its yachts. Overmarine is vertically integrated, from the initial design to making the molds, to installing the electronics. The company celebrated a milestone in December: Its Gransport El Leon  (shown above) crossed the Atlantic, the first Mangusta to ever accomplish that feat.

Southern Wind

This 25-year-old builder has design offices in Italy and a modern yard in Johannesburg, South Africa, where it builds advanced composite sailing yachts from 82 to 115 feet in length. Over the years, it has worked with renowned sailing yacht designers, Farr Yacht, Reichel/Pugh, and Nauta Design. Most launches are semi-custom projects built on proven running surfaces, giving the owner the choice to customize interior and exterior. Southern Wind ’s most  recent launch is SW105 Kiboko Tres , the second of its performance cruiser series. Designed for offshore sailing but with the comforts of a superyacht, Kiboko Tres passed the ultimate sea trial: 7,000 miles from Johannesburg to Italy, on its way from the shipyard to the offices in Italy.

Christensen Yachts Chasseur

Christensen

Rare among superyacht builders, Christensen Yachts does virtually all of its work in house. The Vancouver, Washington–based yard has its own metal department for completing stainless handrails, stairways, anchor pockets, and other custom pieces, as well as a stone shop for marble, onyx, quartz, granite, and limestone used in the inlaid floors, countertops, and panels; and shops for woodworking, painting, and upholstery. Vertical integration allows the yard to deliver exceptional details for its yachts, which run up to 164 feet. Christensen’s Chasseur won top award in its category in the 2017 International Superyacht Society, in part for the intricate interior.

Best luxury yacht: 7 ultimate luxury cruisers you can buy

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 14, 2024

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best luxury yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

The definition of the best luxury yacht will differ according to personal opinion and from boat to boat. This year’s nominees in the luxury yacht category of the European Yacht of the Year Awards proved that perfectly.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market.

The best luxury yachts

Best luxury yacht winner 2024 – arcona 50.

When you enter the fiercely competitive 50ft luxury performance yacht market you better get it right. And the jury felt Arcona managed that. This watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, by X-Yachts co-founder and former designer Niels Jeppesen, is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees it move away from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors.

The on trend styling inside and out is backed up by a premium level of build and finish quality and sailing performance – particularly if you have the performance sails, traveller and deep (2.95m) keel options the test boat carried, although the latter does limit your berthing and anchoring options.

While I doubt it’ll be raced or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing: a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control.

As chairman of our jury, Jochen Rieker, puts it: “The boat certainly did not win for her somewhat borrowed looks. She wins by checking all the boxes in all other respects. Slipping along gracefully in the lightest of airs, holding her stride and her balance in more demanding conditions, offering warmth, light and this reassuring feeling of utter quality down below – there simply isn’t anything to fault.”

Contest 50CS

The Contest 50CS, for example, is an archetype luxury cruising yacht, one built to the highest standards and that could take you to most waters in impeccable comfort. This model is, uniquely, available in two versions: this more conventional 50CS with aft master cabin, or the forward owner’s suite version on the aft cockpit Contest 49CS . We ran a full test on the latter after spending two days aboard in the North Sea, where that noticeably high freeboard, which may not aid boarding nor windage, helped keep us dry on deck in a steady Force 6 gusting 7.

As the 50CS proved, this Judel/Vrolijk design keeps slipping along in the light stuff too, providing enjoyable sailing in 6 knots breeze under a code sail. The centre cockpit offers a deep protected guest area, but also links well to the spacious aft deck.

And the Wetzels-Brown-designed interiors of Contests today are stunning and hard to match. The engineering, access to usable stowage, details and finish on the 50CS is first class and to get this level of quality at this size is special.

Both Contest and X-Yachts are early adopters of hybrid power, offering their bluewater cruisers with optional electric drives. For the XC 47 this was designed-in from the start to offer Oceanvolt’s award-winning new 25kW regenerative drive.

The XC 47 is another wonderfully engineered and thought out yacht for distance cruising, in particular for those who also enjoy hands-on helming pleasure. That should come as no surprise to any X aficionados, but what really struck me most about this yacht was the stowage, and the forethought needed to create that, together with how practical it has been made.

That may sound slightly anticlimactic but ask any long-term cruiser and stowage is always a priority. On deck, this constitutes a huge lazarette and sail locker, plus clever systems for launching a dinghy via davits and a liferaft canister, while below decks every square inch of space has been used effectively, with lockers hinged with gas struts.

It’s clear the Danish yard went to considerable time and effort, even building a full mock up of the interior that could be canted 20° each way.

If the deck saloon style looks didn’t sell this model to all – this is the first full non-Jeppesen designed X – the jury were converted once they’d taken the helm. ‘Quirky’ became ‘muscular and bold’. The ease with which it can be sailed from the cockpit was also appreciated.

While I understand many offshore cruisers like a protected centre cockpit and more sun protection, the attention to detail, stowage and practicalities, combined with the direct steering, motion and enjoyable sailing this X offers make it a standout new offering.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

Meanwhile the Jeanneau Yachts 55 stands out for different, unique reasons in this category, offering a completely new concept in comfort on deck while at anchor and a novel accommodation layout. Its focus is on outdoor living space.

What helps place this in a luxury bracket is not simply the price or the creative input of superyacht specialist design duo Philppe Briand and Andrew Winch, rather that its layout creates a palatial amount of private space for the owner’s suite. Guest cabins have their own direct access from the extensive cockpit via gullwing doors.

It certainly makes sense for solo owners or couples using it as a warm water apartment. How many people this will suit is another question, as it segregates any guests, crew or children from the galley and saloon.

I used the term monocat when I first viewed it, as the 55 really does attempt to mix the two worlds, particularly in terms of providing owner privacy and lounging space. Choose the rigid hard top and windshield and there’s a vast amount of covered area including a dinette and chart table – plus a bimini can shade all that extensive aft deck too.

The penalty comes in additional weight and wetted surface, and is felt in the handling and performance, the latter particularly in lighter breeze with the optional in-mast furling, self tacking headsail and shallow draught package we had. However, it’s set up to be easily managed from the mid cockpit with good visibility from the twin helms and easy circulation thanks to the ramped side decks. Full report in YW February 2024.

Best luxury yacht 2023

Best luxury yacht winner – oyster 495.

It is hard to imagine that the decor of a yacht can change its look and feel quite this much, yet the layout of this second 495, Eddie Jordan’s dramatic looking Tuga , is in fact identical to the first boat that I spent several days aboard last summer.

At its heart is a wonderfully (Humphreys) designed and engineered luxury bluewater cruiser conceived from the ground up, built in a new dedicated facility to a repeatable quality very few yards are capable of.

The 495 offers consistent passage making speeds in real voluminous comfort – whether enjoyed from the deep cockpit or the best-in-class aft cabin. Deck stowage and mechanical space is also superb.

Then factor in the family appeal of Oyster’s after sales and world rally programme and you start to appreciate the premium world this sub 50-footer gives access to.

The first yacht fully conceived under CEO Richard Hadida’s reign, this is also the smallest completely new Oyster 495 since 2005 – and it’s a triumph. It was our September 2022 cover star in which we featured the full review from our Oyster 495 three day test .

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60

The Oceanis Yacht 60 is a very different beast indeed to the 62 it replaces as flagship for the Beneteau range. The yard has learned plenty from the success of the First 53/OY 54 and wanted to create a 60 in this style and with the same deck layout (albeit larger and wider) and ease of circulation.

The construction experience of the smaller model clearly helped too, as this is a whopping five tonnes lighter than the bulky OY62 and with a deeper (2.6m) keel. The telling result is on the water. It feels sporty to helm and we averaged a knot slower than the single figure 6-8 knot windspeeds upwind and matched them reaching with Code 0 and a slight swell.

The vast cockpit works well, sheltered below the semi rigid bimini, it has plentiful lounging space with sailing systems led aft to the twin helms. The interior sees a 3+3 layout, where Beneteau wanted to get rid of the corridor effect of the OY62. The galley is forward to help open out space, while the forward suite with offset berth and headboard aft works well to give space with privacy.

This is an attractive, voluminous yacht that leaves a good overall impression whether under sail, on or below decks.

Ice 62 Targa

It all looks pretty funky below decks on the Ice 62 Targa too, especially if you’re watching the masthead fore and aft cameras (plus bow and prop cam) on central displays mounted in the saloon while you slip out of the dock! The Ice is a seriously impressive, contemporary yacht, one that in looks, performance and execution, won over many of the judges.

The first to launch is a highly customised project for a passionate sailing owner who covers long distances solo – he’d already sailed it 3,000 miles around the Med that autumn. It’s impressively stiff, sails handsomely and, thanks to a telescopic keel, points well. We matched single figure windspeeds, and clocked up to the high 9s in 12 knots wind.

Umberto Felci’s team spent 4,000 hours on the design, providing lots of space and light to the interior and a chillout zone in the semi raised saloon. This was easily the coolest looking yacht, with its aggressive reverse bow, chamfered gunwales and carbon T-top bimini, and all engineered and built to a high standard.

The top 25 largest yachts in the world

Every year, shipyards from around the world push the boundaries of superyacht design to deliver bigger and better yachts. The Samuda-built El Mahrousa may have carried the title unchallenged for a remarkable 119 years, but in the 21st century, she has descended down the pecking order to make room for even larger and longer yachts. German shipyard Lürssen currently holds a near monopoly in the construction of supersized superyachts, having delivered 13 of the world’s top 25. But the list is ever-changing with the 158 metre Blue breaking into the top five in 2022. These yachts, all measuring over 100 metres, are impressive not only for their hull length but for what they carry above and below deck. From submarines and helicopters to swimming pools , cinemas and science labs, the onboard features of these superyachts show them to be truly ground-breaking pieces of engineering. Read on to discover our official list of the largest, privately owned yachts in the world.

1. Azzam | 180.6m

In October 2013, Lürssen delivered the largest privately owned superyacht in the world in the form Azzam . Originally, she was designed to be 145 metres, but in the process of optimisation grew to 180 metres. Other stunning facts about Azzam’s impressive design include her staggering 13,000 GT and accommodation for 36 guests and as many as 80 crew members. The behemoth was reportedly built for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, for use as a dayboat to reach his favourite diving grounds. The main saloon alone encompasses nearly 522m² and has a relaxed French Empire style and mother of pearl finishes, designed by Christophe Leoni . On board features include a gym, pool and a special ‘golf training room’.

Exteriors have been penned by Nauta Yacht Design , and the technical engineering was directed by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi for the owner. The yacht has an impressive speed for her size owing to her innovative water-jet propulsion system (two fixed jets, two directional), which catapults her along at a staggering 31.5-plus knots. At 17.5 metres longer than Roman Abramovich’s Eclipse , this boat takes the prestigious title of the world’s largest yacht. The all-white superyacht has held her title unchallenged for nearly seven years, but this reign will come to an end with the expected delivery of 183 metre REV .

More about this yacht

More stories, 2. eclipse | 162.5m.

After five years of intensive design, development and construction, Eclipse left the Blohm + Voss yard in December 2010. She carried the title of world’s largest superyacht for just three years before being usurped by Azzam . Managed by Blue Ocean Yacht Management, Eclipse features a diesel-electric propulsion system with generators powering rotating Azipod drives, dramatic exterior styling and a stunning interior design by London-based Terence Disdale Design , which has been responsible for all aspects of aesthetic design and layout, including the superstructure design, deck layouts, interior design and construction supervision. Eclipse was voted Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in 2011 and Motor Yacht of the Decade at the 10th World Superyacht Awards in 2015.

Her accommodation includes an owner’s deck of 56 metres in length and facilities for up to 92 crew. Her interior boasts hundreds of custom finishes exclusively developed especially for this project, while her deck areas include a 16 metre swimming pool which can be transformed into a dance floor. The yacht can also accommodate three helicopters, one on each of the two helipads and the third in a storage hangar below the fore deck.

  • Builder: Blohm & Voss
  • Delivery year: 2010
  • Length Overall: 162.5 m

3. Dubai | 162m

Dubai was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri of Brunei with exterior styling and interior design by Andrew Winch . The Blohm & Voss project was suspended in 1998 with just the bare hull and partially complete superstructure. It was eventually sold to the Dubai government, and responsibility passed to Kostis Antonopoulos of Platinum Yachts , which prepared a new in-house interior design completed in 2006.

The aptly named Dubai is the royal yacht of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum of Dubai. The accommodation, styled by Nakheel Interiors , is designed for 24 guests and comprises an owner’s suite, five VIP suites and six guest suites, all with open balconies. Special features include a 21.3m-wide atrium, a swimming pool, barbecue area, cinema, disco, a landing platform for a Blackhawk helicopter, a gymnasium, and a garage for the yacht’s submarine and a vast array of water toys. Full certification was obtained from Lloyds Register of Shipping in October 2006 and she has since made several voyages. She can reach a maximum speed of 25 knots.

  • Length Overall: 162 m
  • Gross Tonnage 12488 t

4. Blue | 158m

Taking her place at number four in the list of the world’s longest yachts, Lürssen’s Blue is so voluminous that she beats all the longer boats in terms of gross tonnage. Built for a Middle Eastern owner, she is exceeded for internal space only by those behemoths Dilbar (15,917GT) and Al Said (15,850GT). Terence Disdale has penned classic exterior lines with a sharply raked bow and gentle curves to the deep overhangs of the decks. The main helipad is positioned on the bow, with a smaller one aft. Other exterior features include a pool under cover on the main deck aft, a bathing platform at the stern and twin balconies flanking the owner’s cabin forward. Blue ’s interior is designed to be timeless and rich in “feminine elegance”, a deliberate contrast to the exterior.

Blue is equipped with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system that was developed in-house. An electric Azimuth pod drive can manoeuvre the boat alone or in conjunction with the twin propeller shafts. To reduce noise, vibration and NOx levels, Blue has a state-of-the-art exhaust treatment system. The boat is also equipped with new membrane technology that means her treated waste water achieves drinking water quality.

  • Length Overall: 160.6 m
  • Beam: 22.5 m
  • Gross Tonnage 14785 t

5. Dilbar | 156m

With a total interior volume of over 15,000 GT, Dilbar is the largest yacht in the world by gross tonnage, if not by length. She was built in steel and aluminium by Lürssen to a design by Espen Øino . In 2016, she was delivered in the Mediterranean for her owner, the Uzbekistani billionaire Alisher Usmanov. She replaced Usmanov’s previous yacht of the same name, which has since been renamed Ona . She is usually spotted cruising around the South of France, northern Spain and sometimes Cyprus.

Record-breaking features on board this SOLAS-class superyacht include her 180 cubic metre swimming pool and her 30,000KW electric diesel power plant. Her interiors, styled by Winch Design, can accommodate up to 24 guests served by nearly 100 crew members. She also has two helipads, 3,800 square metres of living space amd an expansive garden complete with a specially developed variety of grass that tolerates salt air, according to its creator Axel Massmann. Dilbar has a single colour for her exterior, a buttery cream shade, that makes her instantly recognisable at sea and can reach a top speed of 21 knots.

  • Delivery year: 2016
  • Length Overall: 156 m
  • Beam: 23.5 m
  • Gross Tonnage 15917 t

6. Al Said | 155m

This Lloyd’s-classed vessel, known as Project Sunflower during construction, was delivered by Lürssen’s Vegesack yard to her owner, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, in March 2008. Measuring an impressive 155 metres, Al Said is the principle vessel of the Oman Royal Yacht Squadron. Designed by Espen Øino with the looks of a classic cruise liner, she sails under the Omani flag and her home port is Muttrah Harbour in Muscat.

This Germanischer Lloyd-classed, 15,850GT yacht can reach a top speed of 25 knots and is reported to have a crew capacity of 150. Her panelled interiors, designed in a traditional style by Jonathan Quinn Barnett , offers huge entertaining spaces and accommodation for 65 guests. Her pièce de résistance is the on-board concert hall that can accommodate a 50-strong orchestra, but across her six decks she also has a helipad and a cinema.

  • Delivery year: 2008
  • Length Overall: 155 m
  • Gross Tonnage 15850 t

7. El Mahrousa | 150.6m

El Mahrousa was first delivered by the Samuda Brothers shipyard in 1865. She held on to the title of longest yacht in the world for over a century before finally being usurped by the delivery of Prince Abdulaziz in the 1980s. She was originally built for the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, receive visiting dignitaries. and was present at the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in 1869, when she was used to receive visiting dignitaries. She was lengthened by 12.1 metres in 1872, when her paddle wheels were removed, and by a further 5.2 metres in 1905. Her last major rebuild was in 1950.

Significant moments in her lifetime include her participation in 1976 as the Egyptian representative at the Bicentennial Fleet Review in New York harbour. She slipped into disrepair after this while being used as a museum ship. In 1992, a major effort was put into making her seaworthy enough to travel to Italy for the Christopher Columbus Fleet Review. She now serves as the Egyptian Presidential Yacht but is seldom seen in public. She is usually berthed in Alexandria, where she is cared for by the Egyptian Navy, which lists her as a training ship. Powered by three Parsons steam turbines, she can achieve a top speed of 16 knots.

8. A+ | 147.3m

Formerly known as Topaz , the Tim Heywood -designed A+ was launched by Lürssen in 2012 and uniquely features Heywood’s signature illuminated on her superstructure. Although she flies a Cayman flag, her owner is a member of the UAE elite – reportedly Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who also owns the UK’s Manchester City football club.

Having previously been chartered twice by Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, the 147.25 metre superyacht features a helicopter landing pad located at the bow and her interiors have been designed by Terence Disdale – but not much else is known about this superyacht, as many of her details are still shrouded in secrecy.

  • Delivery year: 2012
  • Length Overall: 147.25 m
  • Beam: 21.5 m
  • Gross Tonnage 12532 t

9. Prince Abdulaziz | 147m

The 5,200-tonne Prince Abdulaziz was delivered by Danish shipyard Helsingor Vaerft in 1984 to her first owner, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. Since then, she has continued to serve the Saudi royal family and is berthed beside the king’s palace in Jeddah. She has been refitted three times; in 1987, 1996 and in 2005.

Prince Abdulaziz was built at a reported cost of $184m to a design by Maierform . Her interior, designed by the late David Hicks , blends ancient and modern. One notable feature is the large lobby, said to be designed to mimic that of the Titanic . She includes a hospital, a mosque and a cinema, and there are also rumours of surface-to-air missiles and an underwater surveillance system on board. The mega yacht can accommodate as many as 64 guests and is manned by a crew of 65.

  • Builder: Helsingor Vaerft
  • Country of build: Denmark
  • Delivery year: 1984
  • Length Overall: 147 m
  • Beam: 18.3 m
  • Gross Tonnage 8233 t

10. Opera | 146.4m

Reportedly built for a senior Emirati royal, Opera 's size and gross tonnage catapult her directly into the ranks of the world's 10 biggest private yachts. The 146.4-metre yacht certainly has some of the hallmarks of a Middle Eastern boat, with deep overhangs between decks and lots of enclosed deck space hinting at use in an aggressive climate. Pictures taken during a maiden voyage from Bremen to Portsmouth last summer showed lots of floor-to-ceiling glass across six guest decks, as well as two helicopter landing spots and a beach club whose twin staircases must climb two decks to reach a 10-metre, stone-lined pool aft of the main deck. The pool rises to form a dance floor.

Lürssen has kept the project shrouded in secrecy, but designer Terence Disdale confirmed that interior facilities include a cinema and an extensive spa and wellness centre, plus other features that are being kept under wraps. He also mentioned an upper lounge with a 110-inch television and bay windows.

  • Delivery year: 2023
  • Length Overall: 146.35 m
  • Gross Tonnage 12518 t

11. OK | 146m

This unusual vessel spent decades plying the seas as a float-on yacht carrier for DYT Yacht Transport with the unglamorous moniker Super Servant 3 – and it is this carrying ability that caught the owner’s eye.

40 years after its original launch by Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding , the yacht emerged from a root-and-branch refit at Karmarine in Turkey. The exterior has been smartened up, with a new matt-black paint job, gold-tinted glazing, teak decking at the bow, stern and sides and an expanse of artificial grass on the submersible aft deck – an idea of the owner’s, to enliven the guest cabins’ view. There are reports that this space doubles as a tennis court and, at 32 metres by 100 metres, there would certainly be the room for it.

With a strengthened hull, the boat’s original role as a yacht carrier has been enhanced. Pumping ballast into tanks under the aft deck allows the platform to lower so that the owner’s 46-metre ketch can be floated aboard and secured. There’s also a 40-tonne crane for positioning other toys – reportedly up to 70 of them, from launches and cars to a seaplane.

Under the direction of Bozca Design , Karmarine has stripped out and rebuilt the accommodation area at the front of the yacht. There are cabins for up to 20 guests, a glazed sundeck spa pool, a "botanical" garden and an outdoor cinema. The lift between decks runs through a glass tower outside the superstructure.

  • Builder: Oshima Shipbuilding
  • Country of build: Japan
  • Delivery year: 1982
  • Length Overall: 146 m
  • Beam: 32.01 m
  • Gross Tonnage 11296 t

12. Sailing Yacht A | 142.8m

This Philippe Starck -designed vessel is the second superyacht commissioned by Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko, after his first Motor Yacht A . She was built in Germany by the Nobiskrug yard and delivered in February 2017.

A sail-assisted yacht like no other, Sailing Yacht A comprises eight decks, and her rotating curved carbon fibre masts tower to 100 metres. She is made to set 3,747 square metres of sail and is manned by crew of 54. She sports an underwater viewing pod (moulded into the keel) and balconies enclosed by the largest pieces of curved glass ever. There are 24 shell doors in her hull, and she has a diesel-electric power plant controlled by computer. Records claimed by the Starck superyacht include the world's tallest carbon masts, with the tallest standing at 100 metres above sea level.

  • Builder: Nobiskrug
  • Delivery year: 2017
  • Length Overall: 142.81 m
  • Beam: 24.88 m
  • Gross Tonnage 12700 t

16. Scheherazade | 140m

Another titan by Lürssen , Scheherazade carries the same name as the enigmatic story-teller of the Middle Eastern epic One Thousand and One nights . She hit the water in July 2019 and offers phenomenal volumes at 10,167 GT. Her Espen Øino exterior features a four-deck aluminium superstructure with elegant tapering roofs and an eclectic range of coloured LED exterior lighting. She also has two large helipads – one at the bow and one on the upper deck – plus a prominent beach club aft.

There is very little information regarding her interior by François Zuretti , but if the work of the French design house on 106-metre Amadea is anything to go by, it is imperious and sophisticated. With the owner known to be a Middle Eastern billionaire, this yacht is designed with warmer climates in mind. Temperatures in excess of 45 degrees Celsius are quite normal in the region during the summer months, so Scheherazade has relatively little exterior space for a yacht of this size. There is limited covered deck space at the aft end of the main and upper decks, but it is well enclosed by glass sides for cooling. Even the sundeck is completely shaded by a hardtop, which all helps to give her an astonishing internal volume.

  • Delivery year: 2020
  • Length Overall: 141.96 m
  • Beam: 23.3 m
  • Gross Tonnage 10167 t

13. Nord | 142m

Nord started life as Project Redwood, then Opus. Everyone involved in her design and build has remained tight-lipped about the details, but build manager Rob Moran shared some exclusive insight with BOAT International .

First up, she has an Ice Class hull for real exploration. Her aluminium superstructure runs to four decks, contained within the dramatic sweep of a black-painted arch – a key part of the vision of designers Nuvolari Lenard . Not one but two helipads are in evidence, while a vast beach club and tender garage gives  "space to store a plethora of toys including 16 tenders, a submarine and an ROV", according to Moran. The largest tender reportedly measures 15 metres, and there is a watersports and dive centre on the lower deck. Nord has a generous touch-and-go helipad at its heavily flared aircraft carrier bow, but there is also a much bigger space aft up on the bridge deck that offers landing, parking and bunkering for the owner’s helicopter, as well as an entire hangar for protection during longer passages.

Also visible to onlookers was the exceptional 25-metre-long swimming pool on the main deck aft, plus a spa pool on the upper deck. Her interior is reported to include a gym, spa, sauna and a whole deck devoted to the owner.

  • Delivery year: 2021
  • Length Overall: 141.6 m
  • Beam: 19.5 m
  • Gross Tonnage 10154 t

14. Yas | 141m

Delivered in 1978 by De Schelde as a navy frigate, Yas was rebuilt in 2013 by Abu Dhabi MAR. Previously known under the project name Swift 141, she was completely modified with new machinery and electronic systems and outfitted with a luxurious interior. It has been suggested that her owner is a member of the Emirati royal family.

She has been designed inside and out by Pierrejean Design Studio of Paris . The unique superstructure of Yas is built in advanced composites and glass and was supposedly inspired by the profile shape of a dolphin. She is reportedly able to accommodate 60 guests and 56 crew, and on-board features include a heli-pad and al fresco dining spaces aft, and a Jacuzzi on her top deck. Her beach club Jacuzzi is complemented by a waterfall feature and a spiral staircase connects her the multiple decks. Powered by twin MTU diesels, Yas has a top speed of 26 knots.

  • Builder: De Schelde
  • Country of build: Netherlands
  • Length Overall: 141 m
  • Beam: 14.6 m
  • Gross Tonnage 5002 t

15. Ocean Victory | 140m

Ocean Victory was completed at Fincantieri’s Muggiano yard in Italy after launching in April 2014. This seven-deck yacht is based on a design by Espen Øino and her interior is by Alberto Pinto and Laura Sessa . She has internal seawater dockage for a 14-metre tender and six pools of up to 8 metres in length. There’s a certified helideck and a hangar to store the aircraft, while inside Ocean Victory boasts an underwater observation room and more than 300 square metres of spa facilities. She is SOLAS-classed and is the largest yacht ever built in Italy.

In 2016, the superyacht world was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of one of Ocean Victory’ s crew members, who suffered critical leg injuries while setting the anchor off the coast of Mu Ko Similan National Park in Thailand. Little else is known about this top-secret yacht, which is kept much under wraps and away from prying eyes.

  • Builder: Fincantieri
  • Country of build: Italy
  • Delivery year: 2014
  • Length Overall: 140 m
  • Gross Tonnage 8506 t

17. Solaris | 140M

The 140-metre expedition yacht Solaris was launched in the city of Bremerhaven in February 2021 as the flagship model of German shipyard Lloyd Werft . She is the debut project of Australian designer Marc Newson , who has given her a dramatic grey and white superstructure which features a unique fashion plate which wraps around the mast and connects both sides of the hull. Spanning eight decks in total, Solaris has been constructed in aluminium and steel and offers a 26-metre beam. Little information has been shared about her interiors, but her exterior is equipped with a large helipad, a sun deck and a spacious beach club aft.

Turning to the technical elements, Solaris is reportedly outfitted with a power and energy management system from ABB and features two Azipods powered by nine megawatts – the most powerful propulsion system of its kind to ever be installed on a yacht. She runs on a total of eight MTU diesel engines, providing 19,040hp. Little else is known about the superyacht, on which construction first began in 2018.

  • Builder: Lloyd Werft
  • Length Overall: 139.7 m
  • Gross Tonnage 11247 t

18. Al Salamah | 139.3m

Built by the consortium of Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel and the Lürssen shipyard in Germany, Al Salamah is often referred to as "Mipos", the code name used during the construction of this most secret of yachts. Mipos was short for "Mission Possible" – a statement proved correct by her delivery in 1999.

She has a length of 139.3 metres, a massive beam of 23.5 metres, and is reported to have a top speed of 21.5 knots. Both the interior design and the exterior styling are by the London-based Terence Disdale Design . Al Salamah was owned by the late Sultan bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, who also owned 147 metre Prince Abdulaziz . She was refitted by Lürssen in 2007 and is rumoured to carry a hospital room with an underwater treadmill for physical therapy on board.

  • Delivery year: 1999
  • Length Overall: 139.29 m
  • Gross Tonnage 12234 t

19. Luminance | 138.8m

Espen Øino is repsonsible for this giant yacht's crisp exterior lines. Despite a traditional raked bow, she looks bang up to date with a gleaming hull and superstructure that counterpoise dark blue and silver to create a masculine look. Øino has played with the profile of the overhangs to give the illusion of reverse sheer amidships. The effect is especially striking when viewing the yacht from beam-on. Her twin helicopter pads – one on the foredeck and another high up aft – will make her capable of ambitious explorer programmes. She also boasts a large beach club and an infinity pool, with a private spa pool area on the foredeck of what may be an owner's deck.

Luminance was expected in 2023, but delivery has fallen back a fraction. It is a mammoth project, whose true length has only just been confirmed at 138.8 metres. Her Ukranian owner, mining and financial services mogul Rinat Akhmetov, told The New York Times last year that he was mulling the boat's sale following Russia's invasion of his homeland, but it's not known whether he followed through.

  • Delivery year: 2024
  • Length Overall: 138.8 m
  • Gross Tonnage 8999 t

20. Rising Sun | 138m

Rising Sun was built for Larry Ellison, co-founder and CEO of Oracle. She's the last yacht that ever came from designer Jon Bannenberg’s drawing board, with interiors styled by   Laura Seccombe . Rising Sun ’s naval architecture experimented with an extensive use of structural glass for a clean and stripped-down profile.

In 2006, Ellison sold half ownership to media mogul David Geffen, who bought the remaining half in 2010. Rising Sun is reported to have cost more than $290,000,000 and was extended by 18 metres in-build to ensure she was larger than the 126.2-metre Octopus , belonging to Microsoft’s co-founder, Paul Allen. Her 8,000 square metres of living space can accommodate 45 crew members, and includes a wine cellar and basketball court, plus accommodation for 16. One of her tenders, a catamaran, carries the yacht’s 4x4 vehicle ashore.

  • Delivery year: 2004
  • Length Overall: 138 m

Formerly Project Shu, PYC-compliant Flying Fox was built by Lürssen for a serial charter yacht owner and completed her sea trials off the coast of Germany in May 2019. Her elegant, well-balanced profile by Espen Øino conceals an extraordinarily voluminous interior by Mark Berryman , including a double-height atrium that forms the main deck lobby. There are 11 cabins for 36 guests, all with private sea-view terraces, and expansive outdoor living spaces, such as a 12-metre swimming pool transversing the main deck aft, swim platforms and two helipads. The 400-square-metre spa is the stand-out feature. It has heated limestone floors, a Hammam, massage and beauty treatment rooms and the first cryosauna ever installed on a yacht, with a main chamber that reaches a chilly -110C. 22. savarona | 135.9m.

Built by Blohm + Voss for American bridge cable heiress Emily Roebling Cadwalader in 1931, Savarona was sold in 1938 to the Turkish government and became the presidential yacht of Kemal Atatürk. In 1989, Kahraman Sadikoglu obtained a 50-year lease and, with investors, spent $35,000,000 on the refit of this classic superyacht, including a library suite dedicated to the memory of Atatürk and furnished with his personal artefacts. In 2010, after an alleged scandal, the Turkish government cancelled the lease and resumed ownership. In 2014, she was refurbished and now serves as the state yacht of Turkey.

Savarona was, for a time, offered on the market for superyacht charters around Istanbul, although she is no longer available to the public. Key features onboard this superyacht include a marble-finished Turkish hammam bath that spans the entire 16-metre beam, a swimming pool, a gold-trimmed grand staircase and a private cinema. Øino went to great lengths to maximise what he calls the "vision lines" from the interior and the decks – especially from the centreline, which on such a beamy boat is a long way from the sides – by having full height windows and keeping the bulwarks as low as possible.

She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and was built to DNV GL standards. Her striking black hull is matched with a silver superstructure that has distinctive wing stations amidships. Just forward of the wing stations are three-deck windows, providing spectacular views for her 18-strong guest list.

10 Top San Diego Fish Species

10 Top San Diego Fish Species

top ten yacht companies

Table of Contents

Last Updated on September 13, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

Fishing in San Diego is incredibly popular, and considering the diverse species of fish you can catch both inshore and offshore, it’s no wonder why. In fact, everything from monstrous marlin to small sand bass can be caught in its nearby waters. That’s because San Diego offers both deep sea fishing action just off the coast and inshore fishing in San Diego Bay. So, which species top the angling charts? Let’s take a peek at the top 10 picks, with five for offshore and five for inshore.

Explore fishing boat rentals in San Diego

Top Offshore Fish Species in San Diego

1. bluefin tuna.

bluefin tuna

Tuna fishing has been getting better and better in recent years, and these top-tier predators get as much or more attention than any other species in the ocean when they come within range of San Diego. Check out Tuna Fishing in San Diego: 10 Tips for Catching Bluefin to get the scoop on how to get ‘em on the line .

2. Calico Bass

Calico Bass

Although these fish don’t get very large (a 10 pounder is considered a trophy) they’re good eating, can be found near shore so long cruises aren’t necessary to catch them, and they’re good fighters that are usually willing to bite.

3. Mahi-Mahi

This prolific pelagic predator is one of the most common gamefish you’re likely to encounter offshore. Be sure to keep a sharp eye out for weed paddies and flotsam, which mahi-mahi often congregate around.

4. Mako Shark

fishing-for-mako-san-diego

The waters of south California are famous for producing epic mako sharks, including some topping 1,000 pounds and one caught in 2013 that weighed an astonishing 1,323 pounds. If you want to go mano-a-mano with a shark the size of a car, this is the place to make it happen.

5. Yellowtail

Yellowfin Tuna Fishing in Los Angeles.

A favorite at sushi restaurants and kitchen tables, yellowtail are a prized species which can be found both offshore in open waters and close to land near kelp forests or rocky drop-offs. When you’re after yellowtail look for terns wheeling and diving, which are often trying to pick off baitfish the yellowtail have chased to the surface.

Top Inshore Species in San Diego

1. bonefish.

bonefish fishing

The population of bonefish found in San Diego Bay consists mostly of small fish in the one- to three-pound range, but they’re popular among catch-and-release anglers looking for a challenge. The species is different from, but closely related to, the famed bonefish so popular among east coast and Caribbean flats fishermen. In both cases they’re known for being amazingly hard-fighting and punching well above their weight.

Corvina

This species is a member of the croaker family that looks very much like the popular speckled sea trout found along the East and Gulf coasts, but without the specks. They don’t get very large and a five-pounder is considered a whopper, but corvina are also considered an excellent fish to eat thanks to their mild flavor.

Croaker fishing

Croaker get their name from their ability to “talk” by rubbing a muscle against their swim bladder. There’s a handful of different species (white, yellowfin, and spotfin), which can grow to varying sizes, but most that anglers catch are panfish of up to a few pounds. These fish are quite popular because they’re one of the most common catches among shoreline and pier anglers. Tip: they love eating bits of sand crab.

Halibut Fishing in Los Angeles.

Few fish can rival California halibut for their popularity on the dinner plate, so it’s no wonder they make this list. They can also get fairly large (though not nearly as large as the Pacific halibut found farther north) and are known for putting up a tough fight. If you want to target halibut remember to keep those baits close to the bottom, where these flat fish lurk.

5. Sand Bass

While sand bass don’t get very big (a five-pounder is huge) they’re excellent eating, bite willingly, and are found throughout the bay and inshore waters in great numbers. They’re popular among anglers simply because so often sand bass are what’s biting, and those who fish with artificials enjoy targeting them since they readily strike small jigs and swimbaits.

When you’re ready to go fishing in San Diego, remember that there are plenty of interesting species you can target beyond these top 10. California sheepshead, white sea bass, leopard sharks—the list goes on and on, and anglers fishing in San Diego have plenty to choose from.

Best Texas electricity companies (September 2024)

Nathan Schluter

Nathan Schluter is a contributing writer for USA TODAY Homefront. As a native Texan, Nathan has five years of personal experience in the deregulated energy marketplace. Nathan’s writing covers energy deregulation, electricity companies and energy efficiency. He is particularly adept at helping newcomers and longtime residents navigate the complexities of energy shopping in Texas. He has also written for Home Energy Club and MarketWatch Guides. When he isn’t working, Nathan scribbles short stories and explores the Piney Woods with his dog, Freya.

Enroll with a new provider in 5 minutes with our trusted partner Home Energy Club.

Reliant Energy is our No. 1 pick due to its wide range of plans, competitive prices and excellent customer service.

Green Mountain Energy offers low-cost green energy plans and predictable monthly costs.

TriEagle Energy provides the most affordable and predictable energy bills.

The Lone Star State deregulated its energy market in 2002, giving you the power to choose your energy provider.

Reliant Energy is our pick for the top Texas electric company based on our review methodology. Reliant offers several plan types and provides top-class customer satisfaction scores. Green Mountain Energy and TriEagle Energy are very close runners-up.

For 100% renewable energy, we recommend Green Mountain Energy, which offers a wide range of plan types, including wind and solar options. Meanwhile, TriEagle Energy provides some of the best plans for total average energy costs and monthly billing predictability — even its bill credit plans tend to offer consistent costs.

No matter which energy provider you pick , you may be able to score fairly low Texas electricity rates . The current average electricity rate in Texas is 14.47 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while the U.S. average electricity rate is 16.41 cents per kWh, based on data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Competition is a big factor in keeping Texas energy costs relatively low, according to Brandon Young, CEO of Payless Power. “Competition is always good for the consumer,” he said. “Prices in Texas are very competitive and cheap compared to other major markets.”

Don’t just focus on the average rate when comparing Texas electricity companies, though. Consider bill predictability, plan offerings and customer satisfaction.

Who is the best energy supplier?

Reliant Energy is the top-rated energy supplier in Texas, based on our review standards. That said, your needs are unique. The best electricity supplier for you may not be the one that scored the best in our ratings. We recommend you evaluate providers that are available in your specific city.

We evaluate electricity companies in Texas across four key categories: plans, customer satisfaction, bill predictability and cost. To find the best company for you, check out our quick light company summaries below.

We researched provider electricity rates via Home Energy Club, the PUCT and provider websites. We used the ZIP code 75001 in the Oncor Electric service area. Rates are accurate as of September 2024.

Reliant Energy

Reliant Energy is our top-rated provider, offering various plans with fair rates and excellent customer satisfaction scores. Reliant scored 4.7 out of 5 in our review standards.

  • Top plan name: Secure Advantage 24
  • Top plan rate: 16.5 cents per kWh
  • Top feature: Best for personalized plans
  • Plan types offered: Fixed-rate plans, green energy plans, time-of-use plans, bill credit plans

What we like about Reliant Energy

What we don’t like about reliant energy.

Reliant Energy offers high-quality customer service and many plan types. Whether you want green energy or a bill credit, it offers a plan for your needs.

Reliant Energy doesn’t offer the most competitive prices per kWh. Additionally, its plan offerings can be confusing, with times of use, bill credits and free days per week making it difficult to estimate your monthly energy costs accurately.

Green Mountain Energy

Green Mountain Energy also earned a 4.7 out of 5 in our methodology, ranking well for its cost-effective green energy plans. This renewable-energy-focused light company also ranks well for customer satisfaction.

  • Top plan name: Pollution Free e-Plus 12
  • Top plan rate: 18.1 cents per kWh
  • Top feature: Best for green energy plans
  • Plan types offered: Fixed-rate plans, time-of-use plans, green energy plans, solar buyback plans

What we like about Green Mountain Energy

What we don’t like about green mountain energy.

Green Mountain Energy — one of the early pioneers of renewable energy — offers a wide range of 100% green energy plans, including solar and wind power options. Green Mountain offers predictable monthly energy bills.

Green Mountain Energy doesn’t offer the cheapest energy rates, even for green energy plans.

TriEagle Energy

TriEagle Energy is one of our top three energy providers because of its highly predictable energy bills and competitive prices. TriEagle also earned a rating of 4.7 out of 5.

  • Top plan name: Savvy Value 36
  • Top plan rate: 12.9 cents per kWh
  • Top feature: Best for bill credit plans
  • Plan types offered: Fixed-rate plans, bill credit plans, month-to-month plans

What we like about TriEagle Energy

What we don’t like about trieagle energy.

TriEagle offers some of the most predictable monthly energy bills and competitive energy rates. Its bill credit plans feature smaller usage credits, which are less likely to cause serious billing surprises. The provider also features high customer satisfaction rates.

TriEagle Energy’s plan offerings don’t include options that some customers might want, such as solar buyback plans or time-of-use plans, which have grown in demand in recent years.

Rhythm Energy

Rhythm Energy — a newcomer in the energy sector — provides low-cost energy plans and predictable monthly energy bills. We gave Rhythm a score of 4.5 out of 5.

  • Top plan name: Digital Discount 12
  • Top plan rate: 13.4 cents per kWh
  • Top feature: Best for predictable green energy costs
  • Plan types offered: Fixed-rate plans, green energy plans, time-of-use plans

What we like about Rhythm Energy

What we don’t like about rhythm energy.

Rhythm Energy offers a small range of energy plans with transparent and competitive electricity rates. Its plan offerings include 100% green energy, autopay discounts, time-of-use plans and electric vehicle (EV) charging benefits.

Rhythm Energy doesn’t have the widest selection of plan types, so it may not have the best plans for your needs. It’s also a relatively new player in the energy industry, so it lacks the established brand trust that other providers have built.

Pulse Power

Pulse Power scored 4.5 out of 5 in our review standards due to its cost-effective and predictable energy plan offerings.

  • Top plan name: Pulse Texas Fixed 12
  • Top plan rate: 13.8 cents per kWh
  • Top feature: Best for avoiding bill surprises

What we like about Pulse Power

What we don’t like about pulse power.

Pulse Power offers competitive prices with transparent rate structures for more predictable energy bills.

Pulse Power could offer a wider range of plan types, including month-to-month plans. Its customer service is solid, but the provider doesn’t have the highest rankings with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), and it’s still relatively new to the industry.

How do you choose the best power company in Texas?

Choosing the best power company in Texas is all about customization. Specifically, you’ll want to understand your personal energy needs. This includes knowing your home size, which appliances you use, and the times of day you typically use the most energy.

Afterward, you can easily compare rates and plans from top providers, evaluate their customer service quality and reputation, and then enroll with your chosen provider.

Understand your energy needs

Knowing how many kWh your home consumes per month is critical to understanding your energy needs. We recommend reviewing your usage for an entire year to better understand how your usage changes from season to season. This can help you assess whether you might benefit from a bill credit plan — assuming your usage stays fairly consistent from summer through fall, winter and spring. Or perhaps your usage tends to occur primarily at night and over the weekends, in which case, a time-of-use energy plan may suit you.

If your usage tends to be unpredictable, with very high kWh consumption over the summer and very low demand throughout most other seasons, you might benefit from a flat, fixed-rate plan with more straightforward prices.

Some providers with the most predictable energy bills include TriEagle Energy, Rhythm Energy and Pulse Power.

Compare rates and plans

Once you know your energy usage, you can compare plans and rates using providers’ electricity facts label (EFL). A state-mandated document, the EFL provides critical plan data, starting with the rate you’ll pay across three key usage levels: 500 kWh for apartments, 1,000 kWh for medium-size homes and 2,000 kWh for larger homes. Using the EFL, you can find the rate you’ll pay based on your kWh usage.

Consider a plan with a $125 bill credit when your usage goes above 1,000 kWh. This plan may secure you low rates during the summertime when average usage levels can exceed 1,100 kWh across the U.S., according to the EIA . But if your usage drops below 1,000 kWh in milder seasons, such as spring or fall, your effective energy rate may double. Knowing your usage can help you leverage the EFL to find the right plan for your needs.

The EFL will include any promotional offers, such as bill credits or times of use. Your energy usage can help you determine if you’ll qualify for those discounts and how much you’ll pay if you don’t secure those benefits.

Lastly, the EFL provides important cost information regarding transmission and distribution utility (TDU) delivery fees and early termination fees (ETFs).

Evaluate customer service and reputation

Customer service and brand reputation are also important factors. To evaluate an electricity company’s reputation, consider verified customer reviews from reliable third-party sources, such as the Better Business Bureau, Trustpilot and Google Reviews. Remember that upset customers are more likely to be vocal, so use good judgment when reading reviews and focus on recurring themes.

You can also see how common customer complaints are by reviewing customer insights from PUCT .

Should you choose a long-term or a short-term electricity plan?

When comparing energy providers, you may notice that every company offers a different range of term lengths. Some companies may offer only 12-month or 36-month terms, while others offer everything from month-to-month to 60-month plans. There are pros and cons to both longer and shorter plan lengths, so the best term length is the one that meets your energy needs.

Long-term plans

Long-term plans offer price protection for an extended duration, typically one to three years — although some providers offer five-year contracts. Some even offer lower rates for longer term lengths, so you may be able to secure lower energy costs for extended periods.

Long-term plans also mean you can spend less time worrying about shopping for a new energy plan every few months or even once a year. Keep in mind that most long-term plans will charge higher ETFs.

Short-term plans

Short-term energy plans sometimes charge enticingly low rates. These plans typically charge lower ETFs as well, and month-to-month plans don’t have any cancellation fees. Because you’re not locked into an extended contract, you can price compare regularly and take advantage of any price drops resulting from the competitive market.

However, you’ll also be subject to the whims of the market. If rates suddenly spike due to increased demand, adverse weather events or even the volatile prices of natural gas, you’ll have no choice but to enroll in a new plan because you won’t have the price protection of a long-term fixed-rate plan.

Pay attention to your contract’s end date no matter which term length you choose. If you don’t enroll in a new plan when your contract ends, you may be automatically enrolled in a high-cost variable-rate energy plan, which can cause serious billing surprises.

What are the renewable energy options in Texas?

Your plans’ EFL will include a section on the average green energy content. In Texas, that’s currently around 33%.

Green Mountain is one of the original clean energy providers, pioneering green energy in 1997. That said, it doesn’t offer the cheapest energy rates. Gexa Energy uses bill credits to offer some of the lowest green energy rates, while Rhythm Energy delivers more straightforward energy plans with very competitive rates.

A common misconception is that green energy is more expensive. But competition and investment have led to grid parity, meaning clean energy is typically as affordable — if not cheaper than — traditional energy.

Texas deregulation has seen the rapid expansion of renewable energy options, with many providers offering some form of renewable energy plan. Texas’ vast land area and many sunny days have made it the largest generator of green energy in the United States.

Because Texas invested in both wind farms and solar farms, you can find energy plans that are 100% green without having to invest in a solar system for your home. That said, it may still be worth investing in solar panels for your home, depending on your location, roof condition and energy usage.

Best renewable electric company

Based on our review and rating methodology, Green Mountain Energy is the highest-rated renewable energy company, followed closely by Rhythm Energy and Gexa Energy. Chariot Energy is another solid option, offering 100% solar energy and solar buyback plans — a great option if you already have solar panels installed on your home.

Why should you switch your energy company in Texas?

While switching energy providers can seem intimidating, it can help lower your energy bills. Competition in the Texas deregulated electricity marketplace means energy companies are incentivized to offer lower rates to gain more customers. By comparing energy rates and switching providers, you may be able to secure a more affordable energy rate than you’re currently paying.

Ensuring a better energy rate

To ensure a better energy rate, we suggest browsing electricity companies and energy rates on an energy comparison marketplace, such as Home Energy Club . This allows you to see multiple companies’ rates and plans simultaneously. Here are some more tips to secure a better energy rate:

  • Determine your home’s average usage: Knowing how and when you use the most energy can help you identify the right plan for your needs.
  • Time your switch properly: Energy prices in Texas change regularly, with providers updating costs multiple times in a month. Meanwhile, TDUs can update their charges twice yearly, typically in March and September.
  • Avoid switching companies during the summer: Texas’ infamous heat waves typically cause demand to increase, sending prices soaring. You can often find the lowest rates in fall or spring.
  • Pay attention to ETFs: If you’re enrolled in a fixed-rate energy plan, you may be responsible for a cancellation charge if you end your plan early. You can avoid ETFs if you’re moving or wait until the last two weeks of your contract. Some providers may pay some of your ETF if you switch to their service.
  • Look out for seasonal discounts: Pay attention to gift card incentives or short-term savings, as some can help you save money. Others may hide rates that increase significantly after the promotional period ends.

As always, keep your personal needs in mind. The best rate will suit how you use electricity.

Moving within Texas

If you’re moving within the Lone Star State, it’s important to note that not all electricity suppliers offer service in every part of the state. Companies available in Houston may not provide service in Dallas , for example. We encourage you to compare rates by ZIP code to ensure you only consider providers and plans available in your neighborhood.

Current transmission and distribution utility companies in Texas

  • CenterPoint Energy – Houston
  • Oncor Electric Delivery – Dallas– Fort Worth –Arlington
  • Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP) – Lewisville, Pecos, Texas City
  • AEP Texas Central – Corpus Christi , the Rio Grande Valley
  • AEP Texas North – Abilene
  • Lubbock Power & Light – Lubbock

Your service area determines which local utility company serves you. For example, if you live in the CenterPoint Energy service area, you may have access to electricity companies that don’t offer service in the Oncor Electric service area.

Your energy rates will also vary based on the TDU service area. Every TDU charges a flat delivery fee per month and a delivery fee per kWh — and each company’s utility fee is different. This means monthly energy rates will vary across TDU service areas, even if you’re considering plans from the same light company.

If you’re moving within the same TDU service area, you can typically transfer your energy plan to your new address free of charge. As a bonus, your rate should stay the same. However, if you’re moving to a new TDU service area, you’ll be required to enroll in a new plan. Because you’re moving, you won’t owe a cancellation fee.

What is the cheapest electricity provider in Texas?

The electricity providers with the lowest advertised rates are Gexa Energy, Frontier Utilities and 4Change Energy. However, other providers may offer competitive rates with more predictable energy bills.

Remember, the best rate isn’t just about the bottom line, but about your total average energy costs. For the most predictable and affordable energy bills, consider plans offered by TriEagle Energy, Rhythm Energy, Pulse Power and Shell Energy.

What’s next?

If you’ve found a provider that meets your needs, you can use Home Energy Club to check out provider review pages, where you can compare rates and plans, and learn more about that provider’s customer service quality. You can also look for energy plans and electricity companies based on specific cities.

When you’re ready to choose a provider, you can enroll online in just a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions about energy companies in Texas

Who is currently the best energy supplier.

Based on our ratings and reviews, Reliant Energy is the top energy supplier in Texas. Reliant offers competitive energy prices with a wide range of plan types. Its customer service is also excellent.

How many energy providers are in Texas?

As of September 2024, there are more than 130 energy providers registered with the PUCT.

Why does Texas use deregulated energy?

Texas deregulated its energy market in 2002 in an effort to break up monopolies and give Texans more control over where they get their energy from. One of the goals was to ensure lower energy costs for the average Texan consumer. The free market encourages competition between energy providers, incentivizing companies to keep costs low.

Can I switch providers if I’m in the middle of a contract?

Technically, you can switch energy providers if you’re in the middle of your contract, but you may owe a cancellation fee, also called an ETF. Termination fees can range from $150 to $395, although some companies charge a flat rate of $20 per month remaining in your contract.

If you find an energy rate that’s significantly lower than your current rate, you may find that it’s worth paying the ETF and enrolling in the new energy plan. However, be sure to estimate your monthly costs to determine if the potential monthly energy savings will offset the cost of the ETF.

Intruder logo.

In addition to its continuous pentesting services, Intruder also harnesses the power of automation to offer both external and internal vulnerability scanning for around-the-clock coverage. This approach helps clients find and fix critical vulnerabilities, even if it’s not yet time for the next scheduled pentest. If you need vulnerability scanning in addition to pentesting, then you can get it all from the same company with Intruder.

Why I chose Intruder

I selected Intruder because of its internal and external vulnerability scanning tools, which are relatively affordable. Do note that you’ll need the Premium plan if you want to add-on the continuous penetration testing tool . I also appreciated that Intruder offers a 14-day free trial as well as integrations with popular tools like Slack and GitHub.

  • Essential : Starts at $157 per month billed annually or $174 per month billed monthly for 1 application and 1 target.
  • Pro : Starts at $221 per month billed annually or $284 per month billed monthly for 1 application and 1 target. A 14-day free trial is available.
  • Premium : Contact sales for a custom quote.
  • Add targets by IRL, IP address, or cloud integration.
  • Compliance reports are always audit-ready.
  • Schedule various scans and set parameters according to business priorities.
  • Continuous pentesting ensures rapid response times.

Cobalt.io: Best for on-demand pentesting

Cobalt.io logo.

Cobalt takes a Pentest-as-a-Service approach, providing on-demand penetration to companies as needed. Depending on which plan you opt for and the type of testing engagement, Cobalt can sometimes start pentesting in as little as 1-3 business days. Its flexible, credits-based model allows each company to distribute the work based on their business priorities or asset complexities (credits are purchased in yearly packages).

Why I chose Cobalt.io

I chose Cobalt because of its fast response times and flexible pricing model. This unique model helps businesses save time and money, which is always a positive since penetration testing can be lengthy and costly. If you need on-demand pentesting fast, this is definitely a penetration testing company worth checking out.

Cobalt offers three pricing tiers — Standard, Premium, and Enterprise — but doesn’t disclose how much each one costs or how many credits they get. For pricing details, contact the sales team for a quote.

  • Tests are compliant with many different industry standards.
  • Customized team is selected from a pool of 400+ security experts according to each client’s needs.
  • Both preset and configurable reporting options are available.
  • Free retesting included with all plans.

Acunetix: Best for small businesses

Acunetix logo.

Acunetix is a web application security product owned by Invicti that is geared towards small businesses that don’t need the bells and whistles of enterprise-grade pentesting. Acunetix is meant for web applications, so it can’t be used to test other infrastructure like networks and APIs. Acunetix’s vulnerability scanner can detect 7,000+ web vulnerabilities and combines both DAST and IAST scan results for extremely thorough reporting.

Why I chose Acunetix

I chose Acunetix because its automated pentesting will help small businesses save time while searching for thousands of potential vulnerabilities. I also liked that it provides unlimited users and unlimited scans as opposed to charging for each seat or scan, which will help to save smaller companies money and hassle.

Acunetix does not disclose pricing, so you’ll need to contact the sales team for a quote.

  • Vulnerability reports are categorized by order of severity.
  • Test over 7,000 types of web vulnerabilities.
  • Can schedule one-time or recurring scans.
  • Possible to scan multiple environments at the same time.

The Acunetix dashboard sorts vulnerabilities by severity.

Invicti: Best for large companies and enterprises

Invicti logo.

Invicti (formerly Netsparker) is similar to Acunetix, but it’s designed for large companies and enterprises as opposed to small businesses. Invicti’s proof-based scanner harnesses the power of automation to quickly identify vulnerabilities and deliver actionable data. Invicti’s automation and scalability allow enterprise cybersecurity teams to secure hundreds or even thousands of sites at once.

Why I chose Invicti

I picked Invicti because its automated vulnerability scanner is specifically designed with the needs and scope of large companies in mind. I also like that it offers a healthy selection of integrations, connecting to many popular developer and communication tools.

Invicti does not disclose pricing — contact the sales team for a quote.

  • On-premise and on-demand deployment options available.
  • Onboarding assistance and training provided.
  • Flexible support options.
  • Advanced scanning manual toolkit.

BreachLock: Best for flexible pentesting options

Breachlock logo.

BreachLock provides three different pentesting frequencies to choose from, so you can select the one that works for your business. Select either one-time security validation, annual security validation, or continuous security validation according to your needs. All three types of tests are run in-house by Breachlock’s pentesting team and come with unlimited online remediation support as well as audit-ready reports.

Why I chose BreachLock

I selected BreachLock because of the many different pentesting options it provides, which makes it one of the most flexible penetration testing companies out there. I also appreciate that its pricing is transparent and clearly lays out what level of service you will get with each of the different pentesting packages.

  • One-time Security Validation : Starts at $2,000 per engagement.
  • Annual Security Validation : Starts at $5,000 per year.
  • Continuous Security Validation : Contact sales for a custom quote.
  • Free manual re-tests included with each plan.
  • Dedicated project manager for Annual and Continuous plans.
  • White glove onboarding and implementation support available.
  • Unlimited online remediation support.

How do I choose the best penetration testing company for my business?

To select the best penetration testing company for your needs, you first need to decide what kind of support you are looking for. Do you want automated scanning, manual testing, or both? Next, make a list of all the targets, applications, and asset types that you need tested. Also consider the frequency of pentesting that you want: Do you only need a one-off test or around-the-clock surveying for your entire infrastructure?

SEE: How to Run a Cybersecurity Risk Assessment in 5 Steps (TechRepublic Premium)

Once you’ve got a clear idea of these parameters, reach out to your top choices to begin gathering pricing quotes. Many pentesting companies use a quote-only pricing model because each pentesting engagement is unique. Each sales team has an in-depth conversation with you about your needs and budget and creates a quote based on what you tell them. You might also be able to access a free trial or demo of a vulnerability scanner, depending on the pentesting company.

Once you’ve vetted all your top choices and received your pricing quotes, it’s time to make your final selection of the best penetration testing company for your business. If you’re on the fence, you may be able to first engage the company for a limited-time, scope-limited project so you can see how they work in action without committing to an annual contract right out of the gate.

Methodology

To select the best penetration testing companies, I consulted service documentation and customer reviews. During the writing of this review, I considered features such as pentest capacity, compliance standards, and expert remediation. I also weighed additional factors such as pricing, customer service, and turnaround time.

The 15 companies business students around the world most want to work for

  • Business students worldwide think it would be great to work for Apple, Google, or JPMorgan Chase.
  • They were at the top of an ideal employer list according to business students in different countries.
  • Deloitte ranked the highest among the Big Four companies, coming in at No. 4.

Insider Today

Universum, an employer branding specialist, used feedback from thousands of business students from around the world to see where they really want to work. It's part of its World's Most Attractive Employers results.

"We asked these groups of future talent to provide insights into the company characteristics they find most attractive in a potential employer, as well as who they perceive to be their ideal employer," Universum said.

With the hiring rate continuing to be lower than it was before the pandemic, college students may find job searching challenging when they start looking for postgraduation jobs.

Some business students find Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and BMW Group attractive employers to work for, based on the top 15 in Universum's ranking based on business students in different countries.

Universum surveyed students from September 2023 to part of 2024, although the survey collection period wasn't the same for each of the nine countries participating. The survey asked students to list up to five ideal employers, and the ranking is based on the most commonly listed ideal companies for business students. Canada, the US, and India were just three of the places surveyed.

A few companies in the top 15 of the ranking based on business students held the same rank as last year. That includes the top three: Apple, Google, and JPMorgan Chase. All four Big Four companies made the top 15, with PwC coming in at No. 11 and Deloitte at No. 4.
