Andy Waugh reveals 175m concept Acionna

British designer Andy Waugh has unveiled a new 175 metre yacht concept, called Acionna.

Designed to create a vast amount of interior space, Waugh predicts that Acionna could accommodate almost any desired feature, from a full-size squash court – undoubtedly a nod to the much admired padel tennis court on Aviva – to a helicopter hangar or 20 metre indoor pool.

Included in her eight decks is a double-height main saloon with panoramic curved glass windows overlooking a U-shaped main aft deck pool with two cascading waterfalls. This bathing area leads down to the swim platform and offers a highly original arrangement which sees an ‘island’ of social spaces, including lounge and dining areas as well as two bars, surrounded by the pool and accessed via a tunnel aft and a bridge forward.

“Acionna is the ultimate world cruising megayacht and challenges many of the preconceptions about larger yachts”, says Waugh. “Her avant-garde styling is a feast-for-the-eyes from every angle, exaggerated by her elegant proportions and sheer scale.”

Designed for long distance cruising, Acionna’s power will come from a hydrogen propulsion system, rather than traditional battery powered electric systems which would require regular recharging. It also allows the yacht to be considered ‘zero-impact’ if a renewable source of energy is used to manufacture the hydrogen. However, this kind of technology is still being developed with only a few marine hydrogen facilities in the planning stage.

“The concept is for those who see themselves as trendsetters and game changers, those who appreciate the zenith of luxury but also want to have a positive impact”, added Waugh.

Andy Waugh has become known for his boundary-pushing yacht concepts which, in recent years, have included 45 metre Revolution and 90 metre Nouveau .

A model of Acionna is set to be unveiled at Monaco Yacht Show in September 2018.

Acionna Yacht Concept Revealed

British designer Andy Waugh has announced his latest yacht concept . The impressive 574-foot eight-deck motor yacht is destined to push boundaries—not only in style but in efficiency, too. Designed to challenge preconceptions about a yacht of its size, its elegant lines are complemented by the finishing touches throughout.

Acionna’s interior is built for those with imagination. The yacht’s ample space can include just about anything, including (but not limited to) a full-size squash court, helicopter hanger, or 66-foot indoor pool. With eight decks, there is plenty of space to play with. The double-height main saloon features panoramic curved glass overlooking the main aft-deck pool. Uniquely situated between a central “island” of communal areas, the pool also flows down the sloped transom and into a lower pool of the swim platform.

Yet another unique feature to this advanced concept is the propulsion system. Drawing inspiration from a hydrogen propulsion system currently being trialed in cruise ships and ferries, the aim is to create a zero-impact yacht. And with carbon footprints in the superyacht industry pretty heavy, this hydrogen purchased from renewable energy sources would be a welcome change in that. As Waugh explains, “This concept could easily take five or eight years to build and things may well change in that time. But there are certain areas in the world such as the Norwegian fjords that may well not be accessible by diesel vessels shortly after that time due to planned regulations and so people who build diesel yachts now may find their cruising options are restricted in the future.”

If you’re looking for a long-range vessel that can go the distance, hydrogen propulsion can take you there. According to Waugh, such concepts need to come to fruition in order to create more demand for hydrogen-powered vessels in order to make them economically viable. But this concept is not for the fair-weather sailor—such a design is ready and waiting for the trendsetters and game-changers who will appreciate everything Acionna has to offer.

Acionna Yacht – Named after a Gaelic water goddess

At 175m in length Acionna Yacht is the ultimate world cruising megayacht and challenges many of the preconceptions about larger yachts which are often said to be homogenous and conventional. At first glance it is obvious that Acionna is absolutely unique, her avant-garde styling a feast-for-the-eyes from every angle is exaggerated by her elegant proportions and sheer scale.

Named after a Gaelic water goddess, yacht designer Andy Waugh’s new concept, Acionna, would be powered by hydrogen if built. The designer tells Superyachts.com that he was inspired by Norwegian ferries and cruise liners, reading as much as he could about the new propulsion method before designing Acionna.

Acionna Yacht Interior

The interior space available within the design is colossal and could include almost any feature desired including potentially a full size squash court, helicopter hanger and a 20m indoor pool.(Yes, you read correctly a full 20m indoor pool, for your convenience if your already doing the math or conversion – thats 65 feet long, inside of a boat!) Included in her 8 decks is a spectacular, double-height main saloon with panoramic curved glass overlooking the main aft deck pool.

This area of the design leading down to the swimming platform is highly unusual as it comprises of a central ‘island’ of communal areas completely surrounded by the pool and accessed via a tunnel aft and a bridge forward. The pool flows constantly down the sloped transom and into a lower pool of the swim platform, whether this is used as a method of egress is left up to the individual….

Our favorite aspect of the ACIONNA is the design both on the outside, however more so on the inside. To clarify we are not only referring to its beautiful interior finishings, and amenities such as pools, spas, entertainment, etc, but the functions of the yacht, the engine build out and focus on the future in bettering our world and changing the way yachts are built.

Slightly more space will be used for the propulsion system in comparison to conventional designs as she is planned to be powered with hydrogen using a similar system currently being trialled in cruise ships and ferries. If the power used to manufacture the hydrogen is purchased from renewable energy sources the yacht could be said to be ‘zero impact’.

Hydrogen propulsion currently makes the most sense with larger vessels requiring long range capability (as battery powered electric systems require regular recharging) however at present there are only a few marine hydrogen facilities in the planning stage.

The Acionna concept is for those who see themselves as an innovator, a trend setter, and the game changers. Those who certainly appreciate luxury but also want to have a positive impact.

We wanted to write this article not only because of the obvious beauty and love for the yachting world, but more so due to the positive impact the yacht would have on the world and the change in direction this yacht could create as far as how vessels, cruise lines, and alike boats are manufactured and produced around the world.

EXTERIOR Motor yacht ACIONNA offers plenty of exterior deck space arranged for guests to make the most of the stunning surroundings. On the sun deck there is a large dining setting with a u-shaped sofa surrounding a flexible table: the space benefits from a retractable bimini shade. A double sun pad backs onto the bench creating seating for the helm station. There is also a deck grill for the crew to make lovely BBQ lunches on board.

The foredeck is perfect for sunbathing on the wide, built-in sun pad which offers a sofa at the foot – both offering great views over the bow. The main deck aft is a shaded terrace set up with a dining table and includes steps down to the water’s edge, from where guests can enjoy the water toys.

ACIONNA Specifications

INTERIOR The beautiful interiors from Piero Lissoni blends neutral décor – wood flooring, soft fabrics and light oak furnishings – and is filled with natural light. The main salon is a lovely family friendly space configured with a comfortable lounge aft and a formal dining area forward.

The galley and wheelhouse are forward on the main deck.

The décor is tasteful and elegant, with a beach-house vibe across the four suites. There is one master cabin with king size bed, one VIP cabin with double bed, one cabin with twin beds convertible to double bed, and one cabin with twin beds plus a Pullman berth. All cabins benefit from the luxury and privacy of ensuite bathroom facilities plus the convenience of TVs and ample storage.

The Acionna yacht charter is an 84 foot motor yacht built by the shipyard Sanlorenzo. Acionna means See Goddess in Latin and the name certainly fits. This beauty was first launched in 2004 and refitted for an update in 2019. 

The Acionna luxury yacht was custom designed with four suites that can hold a total of eight guests. There’s a master suite, two twin cabins and a VIP cabin. It’s equipped with six beds, one convertible bed, four singles, a double and a queen bed. You’ll have four crew members with you on the Acionna yacht charter. 

Destinations & Seasonality

You can charter this boat in summer and winter and it’s a bit cheaper in the low season. This super yacht cruises the Mediterranean, mainly Greece and Mykonos is a favorite hot spot for people. It’s 84 feet with a 20 foot, 3 inch beam. It has 8 feet, 10 inches of draft and 65 gross tonnage. 

Dimensions & Performance

This boat is fast and very efficient with a GRP hull and superstructure. You’ll have a cruising speed of 22 knots and a max speed of 31 on this updated beauty. The twin MTU engines and planing hull make this a high performance yacht.

Amenities & Recreation

It’s got amenities and toys for days. You can pretty much do whatever you want on the water when you anchor off the Acionna. It’s got a Seadoo Spark Pro Jet Ski, a wakeboard, a paddleboard and two F5 Seabobs. 

There’s two pair of adult water skis and towable toys like a Banana, a Tube and a Hotdog. You’ll also have fishing and snorkeling equipment and can chill on either of the two Nautibuoy floating platforms. It has a 15 foot, 50 horsepower Yamaha Tender you can use. 

On top of that, it’s got a BBQ and Satellite TV with constant WiFi capabilities and of course air conditioning for when you’re inside. 

Festivals & Events

Mykonos is known for having the world’s top DJs year round. You can also take this charter to their annual Harvest Festival and get a great taste of the local cuisine and wine. They also have what locals call “feasts” several times throughout the year.

Established in Viareggio, Italy in 1958, Sanlorenzo offers clients custom-made steel, aluminium and fibreglass superyachts from 19 to over 50 metres in length.

Acionna measures 25.60 metres in length, with a max draft of 1.83 feet and a beam of 6.00 feet. She has a gross tonnage of 104 tonnes. She has a deck material of teak.
