The Farr 25 OD is an exciting, new sportboat currently under construction by OD Yachting of Istanbul, Turkey.  Versatility, simplicity and balance are the hallmarks of this unique design.  OD Yachting wanted a one-design that would impress advanced sailors with excellent performance yet be easy to handle and operate for the intermediate, weekend sailor.  The Farr 25 OD meets the performance requirements with a beautifully shaped hull (developed alongside our Volvo 70s), an exceptional ballast ratio of 50%, a light displacement of only 930kg (2050lbs) and a displacement to length ratio of 77.  Many sportboats are a thrill when reaching and running but become painful, pounding platforms when you turn the bow towards the wind.  The Farr 25 OD has the power relative to weight to be smooth-handling and sweet-riding upwind.  The 37m2 (400ft2) of upwind sail area is set on a carbon spar from Southern Spars.  The 64m2 (690ft2) well proportioned spinnaker flies on a retractable bow sprit providing plenty of downwind horsepower.

The Farr 25 OD is just a delight to sail and operate.  From the recessed jib furler on the jib to the high efficiency rudder safely tucked under the stern, the Farr 25 OD is packed with unique, well thought out features.  The 6 HP outboard motor swings out of a clever storage locker in the cockpit sole and can be ready to go in just a few seconds.  The single spreader, carbon rig from Southern Spars is a snap to tune.  There is enough space below for two bunks and generous gear stowage.  The large, comfortable cockpit has all the sail controls within easy reach of the crew.  The construction of the hull and deck and the arrangement of the keel and rudder are simple and efficient to reduce weight and simplify maintenance.

As seen on most of today’s high tech racing yachts, the keel on the 25 footer is a fixed T-keel configuration with a lead bulb.  The builders and designers of the boat considered the various pros and cons of a lifting versus fixed keel configuration, eventually deciding in favor of a fixed keel to keep costs down and have a simple, maintenance free installation.  The maximum draft is 1.8m, which does allow the boat to be trailered on its keel throughout Europe and the US.  The keel is assembled into a trunk in the hull with a single M20 stainless steel bolt making keel assembly and disassembly extremely easy.

The carbon fiber fin is one of the major design features of this yacht. The fin spar is constructed in pre-preg carbon over a foam mandrel, giving incredible stiffness and strength in a very lightweight package.  The complete keel fin assembly, including spar, blade and hull attachment fitting weighs a mere 18 kg’s.  Such a light fin allows more weight to be packed into the bulb for a lower VCG and turbo’d performance.  The fin planform is trapezoidal and utilizes one of FYD’s proprietary custom foil section designs for optimum performance in round the buoys racing. Given the propensity of T-keel configurations to snag kelp and weed, this keel fin also incorporates a kelp cutter installation.

The bulb shape takes advantage of the recent CFD research FYD has conducted on bulb shape optimization and features a moderate length to diameter ratio and a high squish ratio for optimum performance in round the buoys racing.  The bulb shape also includes a chine, giving the bulb a low center of gravity and improved lift efficiency upwind and tight reaching.

The 25 footer has an all carbon rudder stock, and a female molded carbon/foam blade. The choice of carbon for the rudder stock gives superior strength and stiffness while minimizing weight in the ends of the boat.  The blade shape is nearly elliptical and of a high aspect ratio for maximum lift efficiency and minimum drag.  The foil section is one of FYD’s proprietary custom shapes, with excellent stall characteristics for maximum control in power reaching conditions.

A relatively high freeboard and simplified internal structure provides for a spacious, open interior with sitting headroom on berths port and starboard of the companionway.  A low aspect keel trunk is unobtrusively integrated into the centerline longitudinal of the internal structure, allowing for easy movement throughout the cabin.  Propulsion is provided by a 6hp outboard, which is conveniently stowed in and deployed through a well in a locker in the cockpit sole.

CONSTRUCTION

Light and simple are the two words used to describe the structure of the Farr 25 OD.  All structural elements are stitched/knitted E-glass in an epoxy resin, vacuum-bagged to achieve high fiber contents with low void content.  The hull and deck shell is E-glass over a tough foam core, with high-density foam and additional uni-directional and multi-axial reinforcements used in high stress areas.

Hull shell support comes from a simple one-piece structural liner, composed of a transverse mast step, transverse keel floor and a single centerline longitudinal spanning from the mast step aft to a composite cockpit support frame.  Additional deck support consists of a transverse bowsprit support frame and a shallow foredeck beam.  A structural companionway strut supports the deck amidships.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Down wind sail area: 87.5 m2/940 sq.ft.

Review of Farr 25

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.80 - 1.90 meter (5.91 - 6.21 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Farr 25 is 2.55, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Farr 25 is about 115 kg/cm, alternatively 644 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 115 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 644 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 22m 2 (236 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

FARR25OD – THE HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTBOAT Given the many year’s of success of the Platu25 (Design Number 316) Farr Yacht Design together with OD Yachting Turkey decided to develop a new sportboat that fits the high performance needs of today’s sportboat world as seen by the popular HP30 class in the UK, the Cape31 class in South Africa or the growing HP Boxrule class in the US. Together both parties gave birth to a unique, fresh, and modern sportboat: the Farr25 OD. Even though the Farr25OD shares the same water-length with its older sibling, Farr Yacht Design 667 is very much different from the famous Platu 25: a t-keel, carbon mast and appendices as well as a completely new hull design inspired by the modern Volvo Ocean Racers and TP52s, make this design an up to date sportboat capable of not only winning races under elapsed time but to collect also silver in diverse rating rules such as Australian SMS, ORC International and ORC Club (as demonstrated by a well deserved second place in the 2015 ORC Sportboat Europeans), as well as IRC. Even though the boat easily reaches speed in excess of 17-20 knots, it remains easy to handle and provides plenty of fun and excitement to its owner. Boats are now racing in Australia, Turkey, Switzerland and Germany and have proven track record of not only being faster than many larger boats but to also win under handicap. This all comes at a reasonable budget and involves only a minimum of effort, as the 930kg boat can be easily towed around and brought to multiple venues a year with a minimum of budget.

Looking at the Farr 25. Too much boat for a novice sailor?

I would like to enjoy a faster boat. My port is Rochester, NY on the south shore of Lake Ontario. These seem to be in my budget and the videos I have seen are very impressive in terms of the boat's performance. Can these be rigged to be sailed single handed? Or do I need a crew of 4 as all of the videos show? Thanks, Bob

Ted

If you're physically up to the challenge, most boats can be single handed, even the Farr 25. As a novice sailor you will have your hands full especially if you plan to fly a kite solo. How novice a sailor are you? Do you plan on sailing this boat by yourself most of the time? What is your comfort level regarding wind speed?

Well, I'm still pretty strong at 61. I cycle a lot with a group here in Rochester and I trailer the family cruiser, launch and retrieve every time we go out. I think I can manage the physical part. I don't think I would try a spinnaker alone out there. Just trying to look at this boat realistically. I would go out initially only on light wind days. There is a huge sailing community here in Rochester and at the Yacht club in particular. I think I would have experienced access at my disposal. Thanks for your input. Bob

Jackdaw

The Farr 25 (AKA the Beneteau Platu) is a full on race boat, designed for expert crews. It's a fun boat, but very powerful and would be very easy to get in over your head. So not a sold NO but a caution.

JohnShannon

Well I am just made this mistake. So I used to have a First 375 with roller furling and mainsail on a track and below decks autopilot. Single handing was no problem, the wind would push me backwards out of the slip, motor for a bit, autopilot head to wind raise main, unfurl jib and good to go. My new boat has a jib that is run up a foil, a two person operation, has a main with a bolt rope and the halyard below decks, so again a two person operation, even motoring is a two person operation the control panel is below decks! So I am busy modifying things to allow for single handing. Main is being converted to slugs, jib will be converted to hanks, looking at a better autopilot etc. I haven't gotten to spinnakers yet!.

61 year old nerves can lead to bad decisions notwhistanding an excellent physical condition . I find that making quick and sound decisions are key to solo sailing. The slower the boat the better decisions we tend to make. The Farr 25 has terrific acceleration and requires fast trimming and precise reactions in certain conditions. I would compare it to a newbie motorcycle rider that takes off in the bike and cannot twist the throttle down to stop the bike before crashing through a fence. I would say learn how to operate the boat with an experienced crew aboard so you may anticipate boat reaction under different situations before attempting to sail it solo. F1 cars are not a Farr model but you get the idea.

SG

J/80 singlehanded? http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2015/07/23/video-singlehanded-racing-on-j80/ You may get some ideas.

I believe it could be sailed single handed, but probably not sailed well. If you want a performance boat and are willing to find 3 friends to sail it well, get it. You can always sail it solo with just the main, and that would be easy. Jib would add to the work and probably result in being overpowered in any kind of wind. Spinnaker should probably be left in the bag. I used to have a Rocket 22, and would sail it with my then young kids, so essentially single handed. Up to 15, main and jib. More than 15, just main. Spinnaker when I had 3 or 4 crew. Those kind of boats can be a lot of fun, but you better know what you're getting into. And, you should learn how they handle differently than a traditional keeled boat. You have to keep them going or that fin will stall like there's no tomorrow. By the way, I'm 60 and can still sail a sport boat well, so rubbish on the "61 year old nerves" comment.

Right you are !! Thanks so much for your input. Bob

i vote you buy it. fast is always fun. that hot rod will attract crew easily. it's designed to have fun in. it's an over sized planing dingy with a keel. super safe. it's got all the cool toys. fast always looks good. planing boats are a hoot

keep the hull closed. hatch boards in and hatch closed. nothing bad can happen. it's a keel boat with great floatation that way. buy it and never look back, except to wave at the boat you just passed.

  1. FARR 25

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
