2024 CRYA Soling 1m National Championship

Sullivan’s Pond – Dartmouth, NS Hosted by: Halifax Area Model Yacht Club June 15-16, 2024

The 2024 CRYA National Championship in the Soling One Metre class was held this past weekend at Sullivan’s Pond. While all but one entry came from the host club, we were very grateful that Blake Moran joined us from the Quinte Model Yacht Club.

Day one got underway with a steady rain falling, and a light a shifty wind from the south. Organizer in chief Brian Lugar made the gloomy weather a little more bearable with hot coffee, Tim Horton’s treats and most importantly, a tent to keep the scorers and the Race Director a little drier.

With the sailors assembled and the facilities erected, race director Bob Boutilier called for the skippers meeting and racing followed.

Race one started with twelve boats on the line and the rain intensifying. Immediately returning to the shore with a malfunctioning jib sheet, Jim Goddard started the first race in last place. With the shifty wind conditions challenging the fleet, the first race was won by Gary Bugden (213), second Brian Lugar (959) and third Blake Moran (967).

Race two brought a retirement for the balance of the day from Bob White (333) with radio problems before the start. Gary Bugden (213) repeated his winning form as conditions deteriorated further with a hard rain.

Race three saw two more competitors succumb to radio issues because of the dampness with Janice Anderson (625) and Mike McDonah (135) out for the day. The stalwart nine left behind were led to the finish by Jim Goddard (544), Blake Moran (967) and Mike Kennedy (110).

Jim Goddard (544) won race four and lunch arrived. Bob Boutilier announced that we would sail two more races following lunch and call it a day. While we love to race, we were all soaked and the weather was getting colder making the break a welcome announcement.

Jim Goddard (544) won races five and six.

rc sailboat ottawa

In the evening, we attended a BBQ at the home of Bob Boutilier, with most of the competitors in attendance. One interesting item under discussion was that the radios that failed were from Spektrum. Brian McDonah told us that the way he dried out the wet transmitter was to pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees F, turn it off, place the transmitter on the rack and leave it in the closed oven for a couple of hours. Amazingly it worked and two of the units revived while word is still out on the third. Unfortunately, while his transmitter came back on after the oven treatment, Mike McDonah still had issues and was sidelined early on day two.

Day two was beautiful, sunny and warm with a brisk wind from the north. Sullivan’s Pond runs from north to south, so we love winds from directions that favour the longest axis of the pond. North winds are traditionally fickle, with dramatic shifts in direction and changes in velocity. This day was no different.

Gary Bugden (213) retired from the regatta with back problems and Janice Anderson (625) was unable to get her boat operational but Bob White (333) returned to the competition. A few races in, Bill Fiortas (200) caught the radio bug and retired.

rc sailboat ottawa

On this day we sailed nineteen races with Jim Goddard (544) winning eleven of them, Brian Lugar (959) winning four and Blake Moran (967) winning two. Brian McDonah (127) won one and Bob White (333) is still celebrating his win in race eighteen. We sailed through gusts of 25 knots, flat calm, 180 degree shifts (sometimes all in the same race) making no lead safe, all with good humour and clean sailing. This event also included the only tied finish in my memory as Jim Goddard and Blake Moran crossed the line together and the RD could not determine who crossed first.

Left to Right: Blake Moran, Brian Lugar and Jim Goddard

Brian Lugar was the winner of a draw for a suit of sails donated by Dion Sails. Thanks to Pat Dion for his support of the Soling Class.

rc sailboat ottawa

The numbers were a little disappointing for a National Championship, but we had a great time. At awards time, the winners were awarded some local potent potables and Nova Scotia maple syrup for their efforts. Each competitor received a commemorative coffee mug. Blake Moran was awarded a HAMYC cap as the sailor who travelled the farthest to attend.

Many thanks to Brian Lugar who handled the bulk of the work to make the regatta happen, Bob Boutilier for acting as Race Director and hosting the BBQ, Sarah Bugden-Carter for scoring and Richard Joules for assisting with setup.

Thanks also to John McKinney and the CRYA for their support.

A very successful and fun regatta for the Mini-12 class

by Brian Credico, Commodore, Quinte Model Yacht Club

Many thanks to John Clay. Without his drive, enthusiasm and management, this regatta would not have happened! And also to Blake, Marg and Brian, our volunteers who kept the day moving right along. And Noah, our Sailing School Rib driver and mark setter. The Friday forecast for the original Saturday date was terrible! (Rain, T-storms, 40 kph gusts). So the decision was made to postpone to Sunday. Although Saturday wasn’t nearly as bad as forecast, Sunday was a beautiful sunny day with lighter winds.

rc sailboat ottawa

Racing was from 10:15 am to 3:15 pm, while the winds veered during the day from North to SSE.  So we kept our Rib driver busy resetting the marks as the wind shifted

In total, we got in eighteen good windward leeward multi-leg races.  “A” rig was definitely favoured and used by all the competitors.  Although the “B” rig would likely have been competitive for the last few races.

rc sailboat ottawa

The nine racers were all gentlemanly on and off the water, good sailors and competitive. And all were happy with the race organizing, the cookies, water and coffee provided. The BQYC venue was ideal for gathering, and pretty much any wind directions. As you can see from the photos, it’s one of the best locations you can find anywhere. And the bar was open for a drink after the racing!

Here are the final results with total score for each racer. Note that there was only ONE point difference between first and second place! The three podium winners got very nice forged aluminium keeper trophies and Rick, of course, also will have his name added to the club trophy.

We enjoyed hosting this regatta and look forward to other clubs hosting regattas in 2024.

Report on 2023 Soling 1M National Championship Regatta

By Al Oliver, Secretary, Steveston RC Sailing Club

rc sailboat ottawa

Eighteen racers enjoyed marvelous conditions June 24 and 25 for the Soling 1M Nationals in Steveston BC. Winds started out around 12 kn on Saturday and got everyone charging hard right away. Skippers had to be on their toes as they beat into a strong tidal current heading to the windward mark. Those who attempted to cut the corner a bit were usually rewarded with a second approach before they rocketed off down wind. Sunday was a bit less challenging with currents reduced and winds lighter.

Race officials did a fantastic job setting courses that provided good upwind legs in Steveston’s fairly narrow race area. Starts were usually in quite close quarters and very competitive and were mostly followed within a minute or two with a dozen or more boats heading directly for the dock on starboard tack. Rule 20 came into play frequently. The varied talents of racers often showed up with a group of regular leaders intensely fighting for the top six positions and the rest of the fleet engaged in another battle a ways back from the front. Perhaps this helped make both days highly enjoyable for most participants.

rc sailboat ottawa

In the end, Blair VanKoughnett showed us all how its done with a commanding performance of 19 first place finishes in 24 races. Second spot went to Bud Fassnacht and third to Colin Huggett. Its interesting to note that a total of four skippers found themselves crossing the finish line first in at least one race. Also, no one dominated last place with five different skippers pulling up the rear at least once in the regatta.

rc sailboat ottawa

The organizing committee put together a great experience. Beautiful First Nations art, donated by Aspen Insurance, was awarded to the top three skippers. A number of door prizes, donated by local businesses, were also presented in a random draw.

rc sailboat ottawa

The big prize, a brand new 3DRCBoats Soling with rig and sails by Dion Sails and graphics by DragonSkins USA was won by Michael Kidd who had just competed in his first Soling 1M event with borrowed boat.

rc sailboat ottawa

Good nutritious food and refreshments and a social gathering at Goodco Restaurant and Bar completed the experience. Many thanks to Paul Killeen for the photos, a full set of which will be posted to https://www.stevestonrcsailing.com/ in due course.

It was an honour for Steveston RC Sailing Club to host this National Championship and we thank CRYA for their support and guidance.

Jun 15 – New IOM Class Secretary

The CRYA welcomes Peter Grimm, who has been appointed as the IOM Class Secretary. Peter is an avid IOM sailor who has attended the 2019 WCR in Brazil, the USA NCR in Texas this year and will be sailing in the WCR in Croatia this fall. He has been very active in promoting and attending IOM sailing events in the Pacific region. With many regattas having been cancelled over the past 2 years due to Covid restrictions, we are hoping for a return to some regularly scheduled events next year.

Volunteer wanted for Victoria Class Secretary position

The Class Secretary position does not entail a lot of work, but the duties are important for the functioning of the class. Those duties involve promoting the class and answering questions about the class rules and sailing locations, and along with the appropriate Regional Director, selecting and recommending host clubs to hold sanctioned events such as Regional and National Championship regattas.

Without a Class Secretary, a class cannot function. So if you are interested in helping the Victoria Class continue and prosper, we need you to volunteer. Remember, you will not be alone – the CRYA Board will be there to help as needed

Jun 13 – IOM World Championship Regatta allocations

Places will be awarded based on the IOM ranking results here: https://crya.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/…l-2022.pdf

Mar 25 – HMS 2022 is now available

HMS has been updated to match the RRS2021-2024, notably some new scoring designations. The new version, including documentation is available here

The MYA link provides the following notes about the changes.

The Heat Management System (HMS) and the associated HMS Scoring Spreadsheet have been updated from HMS 2016 v1 to HMS 2022 v1. The update incorporates the new scoring abbreviations of ‘NSC – Not Sailed the Course’ and ‘UFD – U Flag Disqualification’ and removes two redundant abbreviations ZFP and DGM. This brings the scoring into alignment with RRS 2021-2024. A correction to Schedule A6 and a number of minor changes to the text have also been made.

Jan 15 2022 – In Memory of David Cook

Cool stuff. Will be checking progress here and taking a look at your channel as well.

rc sailboat ottawa

Good stuff, nice to see another Ottawa sailor. Will be checking out your vids.

Love it. Good luck. I've often considered having an RC sailor to play with at anchor. Last I looked into them, I wasn't sure what to get that would prove fun and reliable. Read a bunch about them leaking or failing. I suppose I just hop in the dinghy and go get it. They might be kind of big to store aboard too.

From what I've seen of the 15 or so different RC models at our yacht club, they rarely break down totally. It's ls very handy to get a transmitter that includes battery monitoring: you can set an alarm to warn you when the boat's power is getting low, not expensive either. If you don't sail in a small pond-like area, the worry about your boat sailig off to the horizon out of control, or drifting there dead, is real, so we stick to harbour areas where the farthest it can get is the far wall of the harbour. They are great fun, specially when the big-boat season is over, and they are all stored for winter, but there is still open water, which is for a few months here in Ottawa..

rc sailboat ottawa

Nice little boats. I'll check your channel and give you some likes!

rc sailboat ottawa

Moored next to a guy in Avalon once who fitted his RC sailboat with running lights, great after dinner entertainment and very cool in the moonlight.

rc sailboat ottawa

A few years ago I made a scale model of a Colin Archer double-ender, and fitted eight-channel radio control. The boat has individual sail control, (jib, staysail, main, and mizzen) a variable speed electric motor, navigation lights, and a motley crew of four and two cats. This was from a kit, not from scratch, because I didn’t have the skill for that. Buying and figuring out how to fit all the ancillary radio control equipment was time-consuming enough. You can see pictures and read the story here: OLD GAFFER (schooner-britannia.com) Warning: you definitely need a lot of patience to make a radio-controlled model boat.

Hi Arcb, I think your question may have been been answered in other responses here. There is the group at Andrew Haydon Pond, and another Ottawa RC boat club I'm aware of. I have no interest/involvement in any other model groups because they all have either One-Design requirements to join in, or too many rules. I created a model race series at BYC Ottawa, that allows anyone, with any kind of model (ie from Walmart, or the most expensive, huge OD RC models) to race together reasonably fairly. I use the NHC/RYA handicap system and scale it for the models' dimensions etc. We had a great season kick-off in 2019 but the pandemic put a stop to our fun in 2020 & 2021, Hoping to get it rolling again next year. You can join BYC Britannia Yacht Club (byc.ca) for an amazingly low price and still have full access to all the club amenities. I maintain an email list of all the RC model boat owners at BYC, and could include you, if you might be intererested in joining in. regards, Tony

rc sailboat ottawa

Fun stuff. Back in the day I used to build different r/c sailboats. Pretty much all from scratch, using line drawings, it was a long process, but I enjoyed it, back in y teens and 20's. I built everything from an Alberg 37, One J-class which was huge, an EC12, etc. We used to have a fairly active r/c racing group in SW Michigan, now they have almost all but faded away. If you want to get into a boat, with a good chance of similar ones nearby, the International One Metre class is the worlds largest, and they do not take up a ton of space. One Metre (radiosailing.org)

Arc B the soling onemeter is a very popluar one design RC sailboat. if its a complete kit, worth around 3-400 bucks US Ive build about 8-9 of them. not the easiest build, but can be done on a kitche table. Water Watercraft Boat Boats and boating--Equipment and supplies Naval architecture

@marcjsmith Awesome, thanks for the info. I may PM you for help once I get going on it. I think it's a complete kit except for the lead for the keel.

Is this a build your own only deal or can some of these boat be purchased. I'd really like to build a kit, but I've signed up for too much this winter already.

Thanks. Lead shot should be easy to get, just can't use it for waterfowl hunting. I shoot trap and black powder, so probably have a fair bit, maybe not 6 to 7 pounds though.

Easy to assemble easy to sail. Df65 or the df95. Df95 is a better sailing boat, but it’s also a larger boat 95cm long vs 65cm long. The reason I mentioned a local club, you might be able to find a boat built and ready to go, maybe older or not suited for racing. Both the df65 and 95 go together out of the box easily in an afternoon. And disassemble easily for transport/ storage. https://radiosailing.net/ . Some folks save the box it came it to transport to events. Others use a bow and arrow case or build their own out of doorskins Hull is abs plastic, lead bulb, carbon keel carbon rudder carbon mast Mylar sails. Boat can be powered by aa batts. I am not a seller of the boats, but I do know person who imports and sells the df boats. Arcb. If you end needing a few lbs. let me know...

Are the rigs and keels readily removable and reinstalled? This sounds like fun, I just don't think I can devote much time to it.

keel is held in place by a single hex head machine screw bulb is held in place on the keel by a single hex head machine screw as is the rudder linkage The main and jib sheet are attached to the booms by a snap swivel(fishing). The jib club and back stay are attached via a string and a snap swivel as well. The mast is keel stepped in a trunk that is adjustable fore aft. No side shrouds. Honestly 10 min max to rig and start sailing For the 65 or 95. Boat can be launched/ retrieved by grabbing the mast at the mast crane and lifting the boat. Two channel radio, one channel for rudder and one for sail. The sails has all the typical adjustment, ouhauls, downhaul, Vang, jib topping lift, forestay tension, jib halyard tension.

@glatus12345 sounds cool. Keen to learn a new style of sailing. I will PM you with my email address.

The DF65 RTR Version is shipped with everything necessary to get started . Preinstalled Servo's, Preassembled booms, sails, fittings etc. All you need to do is assemble the spars , Mast, hang the sails, install your radio system and go race! Click to expand...

DragonForce 65 / 650mm DF65 Class RC Sailboat

Df65 is a nice boat, would a great boat to tool around with at anchor. Strong ondesign class so if you ever decided to play with other df65 boats you’d be on an even playing field. The df95 is a better sailing boat, but that is a virtue of the longer waterline and heavier weight. The a+ Sails add a bit more sail area for the light days. And if you want to customize the exterior of the boat https://www.dragonskinsusa.com/df65

Glatus, as you move forward on your project, keep us updated, pics of plans, ect... Also, if you need anything printed out in large format. let me know. I have easy access to a 36" black and white plotter

Hi All! Here's Update video # 2 of the 1/18th Scale Bristol 41.1 RC model. The hull and spars are well-developed now, and the mainsail has been sewn up. History of Chelyabinsk Oblast

People began to settle in the Southern Urals in the Paleolithic era. Bogdanovka site on the Ural River (Kizilsky district) is the most ancient archaeological site found on the territory of the region (about 70 thousand years). The age of Paleolithic layers in Ignatievka cave (Katav-Ivanovsky district), famous for its wall paintings, is about 15 thousand years. There are numerous archaeological sites of the Stone Age, settlements of the Bronze and Iron Ages.

In the 13th century, the territory of the Southern Urals was part of the Mongol Empire. Kesene mausoleum, preserved to our days near Varna village, is an outstanding monument of the late Horde time. The first Russian settlements in what is now the Chelyabinsk region appeared in the late 17th century.

Administratively the formation of the region began in the 18th century. It was the result of Peter’s I policy aimed at developing producing forces of the country and the expansion of its borders. This was reflected in the activities of the Orenburg expedition. For military and commercial purposes the expedition founded a number of fortresses, one of them was the fortress of Chelyabinsk (1736).

More Historical Facts…

In 1737, Isetskaya province was founded that included the northern part of the present Chelyabinsk region and the Kurgan region. In 1743, Chelyabinsk became the center of the province. In 1744, Orenburg gubernia was formed, it included Isetskaya and Ufimskaya provinces.

In the second half of the 18th century, mining and metallurgical areas of the Southern Urals began to grow rapidly. Several large mining plants were built, which became the basis for future towns. The first towns were Chelyabinsk, Verhneuralsk (1781) and Troitsk (1784).

In the early 19th century, most of the territory of the region was part of the Orenburg gubernia. Since the mid-19th century, Orenburg Cossacks started the rapid development of the steppe areas. New settlements were named in honor of the battles and victories of the Russian army: Varna, Fershampenuaz, Borodino, Paris and others.

After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway (1891-1916), the province became the largest transportation hub connecting central Russia, the Urals and Siberia.

In 1919, Chelyabinsk gubernia was formed. November, 3, 1923, Ural Oblast with the capital in Yekaterinburg was formed. January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was enlarged and was named Chelyabinsk Oblast. Later on, the territory of the region was diminished not once. In 1943, 32 districts were transferred to the newly formed Kurgan Oblast. After that, the borders of Chelyabinsk Oblast remained almost unchanged.

During the Second World War, this region played an important role producing metals, ammunition and military equipment. After the war, Chelyabinsk became the supplier of equipment and human resources for the restoration of Stalingrad, Donbass and other areas of the USSR.

In the 1950s, part of the territory of the region was subjected to radioactive contamination as a result of the accident at the plant for processing waste “Mayak”.

The collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economic situation in the region. From 1990 to 2000, rail transportation halved. In 1995, the decline in production in all sectors was 52%, in agriculture - 44%.

February 15, 2013 a relatively large meteorite flew over the territory of the oblast. It became known as the Chelyabinsk meteorite (diameter - about 17 meters, weight - about 10 thousand tons). The meteorite exploded in the vicinity of Chelyabinsk, at an altitude of 15-25 km. Several fragments of it fell in the area of Lake Chebarkul.
