I visited the Royal Yacht Britannia, the royal family's luxurious private cruise ship known as a 'floating palace.' Take a look inside.

  • The Royal Yacht Britannia was the royal family's private yacht from 1953 to 1997.
  • The ship is now a museum open to the public in Edinburgh, Scotland.
  • The tour shows the Queen's bedroom, state rooms used for entertaining, and crew bunks.

The Royal Yacht Britannia was the royal family's private yacht from 1953 to 1997.

royal yacht 2023

With its many royal family vacations and official tours, the yacht logged over 1 million miles , the equivalent of one trip around the world for each of its 44 years at sea.

The Queen once said that "Britannia is the one place where I can truly relax."

royal yacht 2023

The Labour government decommissioned the ship in 1997 due to its high operation cost of £11 million each year, Reuters reported . That's equivalent to about $23 million today.

At the decommissioning ceremony, the Queen  shed a rare public tear .

The ship has made several appearances in Netflix's "The Crown," including season five .

The yacht is now a museum open to the public in Edinburgh, Scotland.

royal yacht 2023

On a recent trip to Scotland , I booked a ticket for the Royal Yacht Britannia museum, which costs £18.50 ($23) for adults.

The entrance is located inside the Ocean Terminal shopping center in Edinburgh.

Before boarding the yacht, visitors walk through a museum detailing the boat's history and connection to the royal family.

royal yacht 2023

The five-story ship was a royal residence as well as a Royal Navy ship, with a full-time staff of more than 240 royal yachtsmen and officers.

The museum displays photos of the royal family's life aboard the ship, as well as items like crew uniforms.

Then, a walkway with more photos leads to the deck of the boat.

royal yacht 2023

The ship is docked on the water just outside the shopping center.

I listened to the audio tour of the ship on my phone by scanning a QR code.

royal yacht 2023

There were also separate listening devices available.

Each room of the ship had a number that you could type in and press "play" to hear about your surroundings in an array of languages.

The first stop was the bridge, the main control point of the yacht.

royal yacht 2023

In this small space, officers navigated the seas and recorded data in the ship's logbooks.

Outside, the flag deck is the highest point on the ship.

royal yacht 2023

Britannia had three masts, and different flags were used to communicate with other ships on the water.

The admiral's cabin and suite is the most spacious on the ship, aside from the royal apartments.

royal yacht 2023

The admiral's accommodations featured a day room, bedroom, bathroom, and pantry. The sofa and armchairs in the dayroom are over 100 years old and came from the previous royal yacht, Victoria and Albert III.

The royal family often sunbathed, played deck hockey, or swam in a collapsible swimming pool on the Veranda Deck.

royal yacht 2023

Part of the yacht's royal quarters, the deck was also used for receptions and group photos.

Prince Philip occasionally set up his easel on the deck to paint.

Overlooking the Veranda Deck, the Sun Lounge was one of the Queen's favorite rooms on the ship.

royal yacht 2023

Queen Elizabeth would often take her breakfast and afternoon tea in the Sun Lounge.

The Queen's bedroom on the Royal Yacht Britannia featured bed linens that once belonged to Queen Victoria.

royal yacht 2023

The embroidered silk panel above the Queen's bed, commissioned in 1953, cost £450 ($560, or $6,250 in today's money).

Her sheets were embossed with "HM The Queen."

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had separate bedrooms connected by an adjoining door.

royal yacht 2023

Each room had its own bathroom.

Philip's bedroom featured red linens, and he requested pillowcases without lace trim.

royal yacht 2023

A button next to each of their beds would summon a royal steward.

Across the hall, the Honeymoon Suite was the only room onboard with a double bed.

royal yacht 2023

The double bed was requested by then-Prince Charles when he honeymooned with Princess Diana in 1981.

The room was also used as a nursery when the royal children were young.

The Anteroom served as a recreational space for the officers, off-limits to the rest of the crew.

royal yacht 2023

Officers would spend their time here listening to the radio and playing board games.

The royal family occasionally dined in the adjoining Wardroom.

royal yacht 2023

Britannia's 19 officers ate meals here, accompanied by the Royal Marines Band.

Britannia has three galleys, which are still working kitchens today.

royal yacht 2023

The galleys prepare food for the Royal Deck Tea Room and events hosted on the ship.

The Royal Deck Tea Room offers an extensive menu of soups, sandwiches, scones, and other treats for visitors to the museum.

royal yacht 2023

The royal family once used the space to entertain guests and play deck games.

The state dining room is the largest room on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

royal yacht 2023

Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Nelson Mandela, and many other world leaders dined here with the royal family.

The placement of each utensil was measured with a ruler.

Just off the state dining room, the Queen's sitting room served as her office.

royal yacht 2023

Here, the Queen would meet with her press secretaries and prepare for royal visits.

On the opposite side of the hall, the Duke of Edinburgh had his own sitting room.

royal yacht 2023

Both Philip and Charles used the room as a study. Philip kept a model of his first naval command, the HMS Magpie, above his desk.

The telephones connecting the sitting rooms to each other and their private secretaries' offices are identical to the phones used in Buckingham Palace.

The large Drawing Room and connecting Anteroom could accommodate up to 250 guests.

royal yacht 2023

The Drawing Room featured an electric fireplace and cozy floral furniture. When it wasn't being used as a reception space during formal events, the royal family used it to relax and play games on the card tables.

Petty officers and Royal Marine sergeants kicked back in their living quarters, also known as the mess.

royal yacht 2023

Petty officers would occasionally entertain the Queen and other royal family members here.

The crew bunks weren't as glamorous as the royal apartments.

royal yacht 2023

Each bunk folded up into a seat, and crew members stored their possessions in lockers.

Britannia's NAAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes) shop sold souvenirs and sweets, as well as essentials like toothpaste.

royal yacht 2023

Diana once bought Prince William a Britannia souvenir shirt from the shop. Today, it sells homemade fudge to museum guests.

The ship's sick bay and operating theater still feature the original furnishings from the 1950s.

royal yacht 2023

The ship's doctor attended to crew members, while the Queen's royal surgeon traveled with her on voyages.

Britannia's laundry room could reach temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit as it washed up to 600 shirts in one day.

royal yacht 2023

The royal family's laundry was done on different days than the crew's laundry.

All of the clocks onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia are stopped at 3:01 p.m.

royal yacht 2023

The clocks are frozen at the  time the Queen stepped off the ship for the last time  during its decommissioning ceremony in December 1997.

The tour concludes in a gift shop full of royal souvenirs.

royal yacht 2023

Amid the Britannia-themed mugs, pens, and aprons, the gift shop also sold replicas of royal jewelry.

There's even a photo-op at the end of the tour where you can practice your royal wave.

royal yacht 2023

The tour was full of surprising facts about royal life and travels, and I couldn't believe that we actually got to see inside Queen Elizabeth's bedroom on the ship. It's definitely worth a visit.

What will the new royal yacht look like?

When the Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997 as a cost-cutting measure by the British government, not everyone was ready to say farewell. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has now confirmed that a new royal yacht will be operational by 2026, with design plans due to be released around the time of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee . According to Johnson, the royal yacht will sail around the world hosting trade negotiations as part of Britain's post-Brexit plans – but what will it look like? We pitched the idea to six teams of designers...

Project Albion

Team members : Steve Gresham, Fiona Diamond, Mike Fisher, Mike Brandy, Jarkko Jamsen and James Kandsch

The design : Project Albion is a 140 metre, three-masted sailing yacht with telescopic wing sails that allow the rig to concertina into itself when at anchor or cruising under power. High-profile guests stepping aboard can make use of its two helidecks: one retractable landing pad on the starboard side that doubles as an exhibition space, and another on the bow with a helicopter hangar beneath. Alternatively, there's a hydrogen-powered royal limousine tender named Lillibet (the Queen’s familial nickname)

Star features : At the heart of the yacht sits a grand, double-height ballroom for royal gatherings. Two-storey structural glass windows on either side offer sweeping sea views –  the perfect backdrop to any royal occasion.

“Project Albion is a modern, forward-thinking sailing yacht, incorporating green features and technology, whilst maintaining a sense of grandeur and tradition”  – Fiona Diamond

Stateship Britannia

Team members : Tim Gosling, Luiz de Basto, Bart de Haan, Jerry Lakeman, Luca Scarsella

The design : The Stateship Britannia is a striking 202 metre motor yacht designed to function as a floating embassy. Split into three spaces – public, shared and private – royal yacht is able to host large-scale, international events but also serves as a private residence for royals on board. There’s a helicopter hangar that converts into an emergency hospital, which in light of recent events won't go amiss, while the portholes are deliberately positioned to read ‘2020’ in morse code, marking the year as the beginning of a new era for the royal family.

Star features : A Union Jack-printed glass funnel houses wind turbines with vertical rotors that assist the yacht’s hydrogen propulsion system.

“We want a yacht that stands out and cannot be confused with any other multi-million pound boat. It’s something different”  – Luiz de Basto

Royal Red Diamond

Team members : Frank Neubelt, Theodoros Fotiadis, Guido de Groot, Enrique Tintore, Carl Sorenson

The design : A seven-deck modern-classic with a conservative design that reflects the tradition and values of the royal family. Measuring 140 metres, Royal Red Diamond features a Neptune lounge, two helipads, a duplex royal stateroom and a swimming pool that sits between the two funnels. The motor yacht will be powered by twin Rolls Royce 5,500hp diesel-electric engines.

Star feature : A grand atrium with an imperial staircase sits aft, enclosed by structural glass, and doubles as a gallery and exhibition space.

“It’s a seven-deck world cruiser with a modern-classic style to reflect the conservative ethos of the royal house”  – Frank Neubelt

Team members : Daniel Nerhagen, Guglielmo Carrozzo, Willem Jan Kuipers, Claudio Zimarino

The design : Royal Lion takes its inspiration from the famous Cutty Sark clipper, a merchant sailing ship that used to bring tea back to Britain from China in the 1800s – with a few upgrades of course. A 180 metre sailing yacht requires some serious sail power, which comes in the form of 24 solar sails housed in four DynaRig masts, allowing the royal yacht to reach 17 to 18 knots.

Star features : A platform that opens from the transom can be used as a touch-and-go helipad for royal visits and also doubles as a party platform for state functions and social occasions.

“Royal Lion can store solar energy through the sails into high capacity batteries, which can be used for the hotel load or for manoeuvrability when coming in to port”  – Claudio Zimarino

Britannia As A Rule

Team members : Michele Dragoni, Bart Bouwhuis, Wayne Parker, Aristotelis Betsis, Kriss Hogg

The design : This modern eco-yacht is designed to be carbon neutral for a new era of eco-savvy royals. Among its credentials are solar panels, turbine tubes and a nuclear power plant by Rolls Royce. In their downtime, the royal family can make use of the yacht's electric Jet Skis, electric helicopter and there's even an electric Land Rover Defender for trips ashore. Other highlights include a dedicated "palace deck" with a royal stateroom and a helicopter hangar on the foredeck.

Star features : For those boarding the yacht via the aft, sliding glass doors on the transom open to reveal one large indoor-outdoor exhibition space.

“It’s a floating showcase of all that’s great about Great Britain”  – Bart Bouwhuis

Project Winston

Team members : Andrew Winch, Gabriel Gabie, Jenny Skoog, Sally Storey, Alejandro Hahn

The design : With the Union Jack plastered across three DynaRig masts, there’s no confusion as to which family this royal yacht belongs to. Project Winston takes its design cues from three great British symbols: the hull is inspired by an Aston Martin, the upper deck by a crown, and the sails by the Union Jack. Elsewhere, sitting proudly on the bow is a figurehead of a British bulldog, while a bejewelled royal balcony is the perfect spot from which to wave-off the evening's guests.

Star features : The sails feature an integrated LED system that showcases the Union Jack on one side and act as a virtual billboard on the other to promote the best of Britain wherever it goes.

“Greta Thunberg has already agreed to come on board”  – Jenny Skoog

Royal yacht: Why Britannia will definitely cost more than £200m to build

  • Superyachts
  • Top stories

Boris Johnson has confirmed that there is to be a replacement for the Royal Yacht Britannia using new green technology.

The surprise announcement came in a statement from 10 Downing Street at the end of May. Rather than purely serving the British Royal Family, however, this new vessel will be a national ship rather than a private yacht – a floating embassy that will be operated by the Royal Navy.

The idea is that the new royal yacht will support working royals and government departments alike, while furthering the nation’s interests abroad, both commercial and strategic.

“Every aspect of this ship, from its build to the businesses it showcases, will represent and promote the best of British,” said Johnson, “a clear and powerful symbol of our commitment to be an active player on the world stage. It will be the first vessel of its kind in the world.”

Following appropriate consultations with the Royal Family, the Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Treasury, the Government will put the design and construction out to tender. If all goes to plan the build could start as early as next year with a view to entering service by 2024.

Some critics had suggested that World Trade Organisation obligations would mean the tendering process would have to be open to overseas yards as well as British ones, but the fact it will be operated by the Royal Navy gives it ‘warship’ status and therefore renders her exempt.

Various sources have quoted ballpark figures of £200 million to build the new Royal Yacht Britannia but once a working specification has been drawn up for a suitably large yacht MBY expects this to rise considerably.

new-royal-yacht-britannia-winch-design

Superyacht designer Andrew Winch’s proposal was for a much larger craft

Everything will depend on how much space is needed for conferencing and entertainment areas as well as the number of staterooms, guest cabins and crew, not to mention helicopter and tenders, and the high levels of security needed to protect her passengers and guests.

How much will the new royal yacht cost?

So exactly how big will the new yacht be? Length is not the key metric for superyachts ; usable volume measured in gross tonnage is the name of the game.

£200 million sounds a lot and could buy an impressive 280ft (86m) quad-deck superyacht with a volume of around 2,500GT from a superyacht yard, but a ship of that length is unlikely to be big enough.

The old Britannia measured 421ft and 5,769GT. The Royal Navy is unlikely to spend less than £100,000 per tonne today for such a vessel and will probably end up spending a significant amount more given that this would be a full-custom project. We suspect the final bill for New Britannia is likely to be more like £600 million.

new-royal-yacht-britannia-flagship-company

The New Flagship Company also produced this rendering to try and win private backing for a Britannia replacement

This isn’t the first time a new royal yacht has been mooted. Businessman Ian Maiden launched the New Flagship Company in 2001 to try and garner private backing for a similar national ship to promote the UK and Commonwealth’s business interests. Superyacht designer Andrew Winch also drafted plans for a new royal megayacht.

As far as we know neither of these designs have been adopted by Number 10, which released its own uncredited rendering of what the new Royal Yacht Britannia might look like . One man that has had a bigger hand than most is Craig Mackinlay, Conservative MP for South Thanet, who recently led a cross-party campaign supported by no fewer than 70 MPs.

Mackinlay is a lifelong sailor and the commodore of the House of Commons Yacht Club, and his most recent submission seems to have influenced the government’s statement. Some have suggested that an alternative to a brand-new yacht could be a keel-up rebuild of the old Royal Yacht Britannia , which is now lying alongside in Leith, Edinburgh.

new-royal-yacht-britannia-side-view-winch-design

Winch’s design was first proposed in 2016

She was formally retired in 1997 after 44 years of service and over 1 million nautical miles. Until recently she has been open to the public. Any new Royal Yacht Britannia is expected to have a service life of at least 30 years.

The expert view

“The debate about how or even whether to replace the Royal Yacht Britannia has been gong on for as long as I’ve been editor and seems to crop up every few years when there’s no real news to talk about,” says MBY editor Hugo Andreae.

“But this time it’s different, this time it’s government policy – at least until Boris changes his mind, which has been known to happen!

“I sincerely hope he doesn’t because a new Royal Yacht Britannia really could invigorate British ship building and cast fresh light on the amazing leisure boat industry we do still have.

“But if we’re going to do it, please don’t skimp on the budget. We don’t want Britannia being overshadowed by a tasteless megayacht belonging to some shady despot!”

Is the Royal Yacht Britannia worth Visiting?

Is the Royal Yacht Britannia worth Visiting? – The Royal Yacht Britannia recently won the best historic attraction award from Which so that’s a very positive start. There are five decks of ship to explore, including the Queen’s bedroom, the honeymoon suite, a fleet of v cool vehicles plus a corgi treasure trail for kids. This attraction works in all weather, but makes an excellent Edinburgh rainy day activity, so here’s the lowdown.

is royal yacht Britannia worth visiting

After decommissioning in 1997, the esteemed Royal Yacht could have docked anywhere. Competition was fierce to host it, but the pitch that won brought the vessel to Leith . Visitors get a real ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ experience comparing how the Royals lived, in contrast with the ‘work hard play hard crew’.

You can get to Leith via bus, tram, taxi or the hop on/hop off bus . The tour bus is cancellable 24 hours beforehand so book now and decide later. Access to the ship is through the Britannia reception area within the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre (which is also home to shops and a soft play centre). Pick up your audio guide at the Britannia reception, which is v simple to operate. Then it’s time to step aboard.

royal yacht 2023

The tour starts at the bridge with all the steering, gadgets and power, and great views over the bow where the Royals would position themselves to wave at the crowds. Then you visit the Verandah deck with its thick teak floors that had to be cleaned daily by 8am without disturbing the Royals. This was an area for games, sunbathing, events, whatever was required. My favourite room came next, the Sun Lounge (pics above). Turns out it was the Queen’s favourite room too. It’s airy and relaxed and the sea views must have been fantastic.

Within the State rooms things get intimate. It’s fascinating to see the relatively simple bedrooms of the Queen and Prince Philip, plus the honeymoon suite installed at Prince Charles’ request. I was drawn to the relaxed country feel of the chintz  State Drawing Room (above). It’s nowhere near as grand as it sounds, and appears to be a comfortable family room. On the other hand, the Dining Room  feels appropriately formal and has hosted SO many international leaders the mind reels.

On the lower decks discover the quirky lives of the crew. The segregation between ranks is clear, with different bars and restaurants reserved for different sailors. Tales of a toy wallaby in a ceiling fan, plus a wooden monkey make it clear the crew got up to a fair amount of mischief.

The practical side of the ship is also clear – this prestigious ships was carrying the Queen after all and required everything she may require to look amazing, keep healthy and keep safe. There’s a huge floating laundry room, a very well-equipped sick bay for any emergency, plus a fleet of vehicles including a grand Rolls Royce, a Landrover and a v James Bond style landing vessel.

Finally, take a coffee break or have lunch at The Royal Deck Tea Room. It’s only open to those who  visit Britannia so should never get too busy.

Fingal’s restaurant boasts two AA rosettes, and welcomes non-residents too. I enjoyed my starter of Orkney scallops with ruby grapefruit and taramasalata. Then I opted for a vegetarian main, and it really delivered – harisa roast celeriac with hispi cabbage and potato fondant.

is royal yacht Britannia worth visiting

Afternoon tea is also available, served Wednesday – Sunday from 12.30pm – 3.30pm. It starts with an amuse bouche of sweet potato velouté. The savoury highlight for me was the Wye Valley asparagus and chorizo tart. And the sweet treats included a gorgeous Amaretto and raspberry white chocolate bar and a lemon and poppyseed macaron.

Royal yacht: Government sunk £2.5m on successor to Royal Yacht Britannia before project was scuppered

Boris Johnson in 2021 announced plans for a new royal yacht as a successor to Britannia, but the project was given the chop around a month ago.

Handout image issued by 10 Downing Street showing an artist's impression of a new national flagship, the successor to the Royal Yacht Britannia, which Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said will promote British trade and industry around the world. Issue date: Sunday May 30, 2021.

The government sunk almost £2.5m into commissioning a new royal yacht before scuppering the project, Sky News can reveal.

Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request found the Ministry of Defence (MoD) splashed £2,476,000 on the vessel, a successor to the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Announced in May 2021 by Boris Johnson and set to be named after the Duke of Edinburgh, the plans were cut adrift last month .

It was paid for by the MoD .

John Healey, Labour's shadow defence secretary, said the money was "blown" on a "Tory vanity project".

A breakdown of the spending obtained by Sky News shows that £648,000 was spent on crown servant and military staff costs.

Some £348,000 was spent on workforce replacement costs.

Around £40,000 was spent on operating and admin costs, and £809,000 was spent on private sector support.

The government racked up £476,000 in consultancy fees, and £110,000 in branding and digital media costs.

It is not unusual for unrealised projects to cost a lot of money - the garden bridge commissioned by Mr Johnson when he was London mayor cost the taxpayer tens of millions before it too was scrapped.

An MoD spokesperson said: "The initial phase of the National Flagship programme delivered significant value to the maritime industry that will be fundamental to the future success of the British shipbuilding pipeline.

Almost £2.5m was spent on the royal yacht

"There are multiple costs involved in commencing a credible, rapid commercial competition, including internal and external staff costs, consultancy spend and private sector support.

"However, as threats continue to evolve it is right that we prioritise delivering capabilities which safeguard national infrastructure."

Mr Healey said: "The Conservatives have blown millions on a Tory vanity project at a time when threats are increasing, and they are cutting the size of our armed forces.

"The scale of waste in the defence department is unacceptable. Ministers are failing British troops and British taxpayers.

"A Labour government would get to grips with these deep-seated problems from day one.

"We would commission the NAO to conduct an across-the-board audit of MoD waste and make the MoD the first department subject to our new Office for Value for Money's new tough spending regime."

All of the vendors were approached for comment, but most either declined to comment or did not reply.

A spokesman for the Royal Institute of British Architects did get back to Sky News, saying: "The MoD contracted RIBA for the provision of specialist architectural services and support related to the design of the National Flagship project."

From Epic Sailing Vessels to Rugged Explorers: The 10 Best Superyachts That Will Launch This Year

Beyond size, this year's launches are unusually diverse, including motoryachts, sailing vessels, explorers and even a giant sportsfisherman., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Oceanco Koru Superyacht

With a combined length of 2,929 feet, the world’s top 10 superyachts scheduled for delivery this year are moving away from the idea that yachting is about whose boat is bigger. The trend is now more about mission than size. This year’s launches will be wide ranging, from motoryachts to sailing vessels, explorers and even a giant sportfish.

The list includes offerings from German shipyard Lürssen , which has two 400-foot-plus yachts ready to splash this year, with noteworthy deliveries from other shipyards in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands showcasing different definitions of design, power and performance.

Here are the yachts we can’t wait to see.

‘Koru’ (564 feet) Oceanco

royal yacht 2023

Jeff Bezos’ first yacht, Koru , was spotted last week on sea trials. The Amazon founder chose to make a bold design statement by commissioning the world’s largest sailing yacht, not to mention the longest pleasure vessel, motor or sail, ever from The Netherlands. Built by Oceanco, the titanic sailing machine is an incredible 3300 GT, powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails. Besides its massive length, its classic canoe stern, a double-deck wooden coach house and navy hull with a red stripe differentiate Koru from any other vessel on the water. The project remains hush-hush. Even the designers remain a secret.

‘Liva’ (387 feet, 1 inch) Abeking & Rasmussen

royal yacht 2023

Launched late last year and scheduled to be delivered in early 2023, Liva is the largest yacht built by Abeking to date, overtaking the German shipyard’s previous flagship Aviva by 65 feet. The French studio Joseph Dirand Architecture was commissioned to pen both the exterior and interior, which is reported to include a semi-submerged underwater observation room on the lower deck, a supersized pool, helipad, spa with sauna and beauty salon, and a lower-deck beach club.

‘Alchemy’ (216 feet, 5 inches) Rossinavi

royal yacht 2023

Commissioned by a private American client, the 216-foot multi-deck motoryacht Alchemy is one of three yachts to be launched by Italian shipyard Rossinavi in 2023. Exterior design is by Philippe Briand, with interior styling by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design. Little information has yet to be revealed, though it’s visible from images that the custom yacht features an axe bow, drop-down side terraces at the stern and large floor-to-ceiling windows that afford views from all levels.

Project Jag (400 feet) Lürssen

royal yacht 2023

The 400-foot displacement motoryacht known only as “Project Jag” is reported to be the owner’s third Lürssen. His most recent is Kismet . It is set for delivery in late 2023. Capable of sleeping 20 guests and 40 crew, the gigayacht is equipped with a helipad, spa, swimming pool, two cinemas, gym and storage for a sub. Italian design firm Nuvolari Lenard designed the steel yacht’s exterior, while UK studio Reymond Langton has crafted what is rumored to be a “bespoke homage to the owner’s lifestyle”—whatever that means.

Project Luminance (426 feet, 5 inches) Lürssen

royal yacht 2023

Project Luminance is a 426.5-foot motor yacht that Lürssen claims will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced boats in the world. It’s also the largest yacht due to deliver in 2023. Construction began in 2018, yet few details have been revealed. What we do know is that the seventh-largest project to ever come out of the German shipyard to date features state-of-the-art propulsion systems, advanced navigation and communication systems, as well as next-generation entertainment.

‘T52’ (170 feet) Baglietto

royal yacht 2023

The first model in Baglietto’s T52 line, which splashed in February 2023, features sleek lines and aerodynamic grills penned by Francesco Paszkowski Design. Power comes from a diesel-electric-hybrid propulsion system. The yacht celebrates outdoor space, including a large multi-level beach club at the stern with a fold-down transom, oversized sunbeds and a swimming pool with a floor that rises flush with the deck. Sliding windows on the upper deck convert space into an open-air sky lounge and a 78-foot sundeck with a glass-encased hot tub.

Project 406 (170 feet, 6 inches) Royal Huisman

royal yacht 2023

The Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman made its name building some of the world’s largest sailing yachts, including 296-foot Athena , but now it’s hitting the record books again with the impending launch of Project 406 , the world’s largest sportsfisherman. Naval architecture, exterior and interior are by Dutch studio Vripack. The firm gave the six-decked aluminum yacht a towering profile promising spectacular front-row views of the big game fishing action. The team balanced its height by a long bow, high bulwarks and uncluttered fishing cockpit.

‘Black Shark’ (252 feet, 6 inches) Nobiskrug

royal yacht 2023

Black Shark first began construction in 2019, but all work ceased when Nobiskrug later filed for insolvency. In March 2022, following the German shipyard’s acquisition by entrepreneur Lars Windhorst, work on Black Shark recommenced, with delivery set for 2023. The 252-foot boat, designed by Winch Design, gets its name from its predatory profile and mast shaped like a dorsal fin. A reverse bow, black matte hull and metallic silver superstructure will also help to enhance the marine connection.

‘Ultra G’ (196 feet, 8 inches) Heesen

royal yacht 2023

Heesen is renowned for building fast boats, so it’s no surprise that Ultra G , equipped with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, with four water jets and a top speed of 37 knots. The Dutch yard hailed this as its most powerful project to date. The motoryacht was commissioned by an avid sportfisherman, with a fighting chair and storage for 40 rods. Entertainment was also a big mandate for the design, stretching from Samsung’s “The Wall” screen, an infinity pool, and a dedicated self-cleaning “dog park” for furry guests.

‘Maverick’ (145 feet, 3 inches) Cantiere delle Marche

royal yacht 2023

Maverick is the first Flexplorer 142 to soon be delivered by Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), bought by a young German who is a keen sailor and serial owner of both sailing boats and motoryachts. The owner’s itinerary will see him cruising the Mediterranean, before heading to the Northern latitudes to cross the Northwest Passage and put Hydro Tec’s bold exterior design and running surface to the test. Key features include a custom-built A-frame crane that sits flush on the deck when not in use, collapsible bulwarks that fold-down to reveal a 1,450-square-foot beach club, and an infinity pool at the transom.

‘She’s my queen and I’m her pharaoh’: Welcome to a royal wedding like no other

A wedding is usually a joyous occasion, and a royal wedding doubly so, but at this weekend’s nuptials for Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise and her controversial self-styled shaman partner, bisexual African-American Durek Verrett, there will be more than a few family members wishing she would say “I don’t.”

Not that any such censure would deter Märtha Louise, 52, the rebel princess who has chosen her beau not on the basis of any noble bloodline. Instead this is a marriage based on the outlandish idea that the loved-up couple – who both claim to possess mystical powers – met in Ancient Egypt in a past life.

It’s the latest extraordinary, and to many alarming, choice by Norway’s fourth in line to the throne, who calls herself a clairvoyant and, from 2007 to 2018, ran an alternative therapy centre dubbed the “angel school” because she asserts that she can aid healing by communing with angels.

The eldest child of Crown Prince Harald and Crown Princess Sonja, Märtha Louise has frequently shocked her nation with such statements. Perhaps, in a strange way, that makes her the perfect match for Verrett, 49, who boasts that he realised he had shamanic powers aged three when he saw his deceased ancestors in the room. He will make history as the first black man to marry into a modern European royal family.

However, the reaction to their 2023 engagement was deeply hostile. “We get comments like ‘It’s not going to last’,” Verrett reveals. He has even been accused, he says, of “casting spells on [Märtha Louise] to have her fall in love with me and [that] I’m doing black magic,” and people have made death threats on Instagram. Märtha Louise adds: “Being a white person, I don’t meet racism every day, so I don’t know what it’s like. It’s been shocking.”

Verrett admits that he occasionally plays up to that “kooky shaman” reputation. “I’ll call Märtha up and say ‘So, today I told everyone I’m a reptile’ and she’s like ‘Oh, here we go…’”

But many are struggling to see the funny side of her wedding to a man who has been accused of lying about his origins, peddling dangerous conspiracy theories, and abusing a former partner.

While Märtha Louise spent her childhood in Norway’s royal residences, Verrett grew up in San Francisco’s Bay Area, born, he has publicly claimed, to a wealthy architect father, David, who had servants and a private plane.

However his mother, Veruschka Urquhart, and his paternal aunt, opera singer Shirley Verrett, vigorously dispute that. They say David was actually a contractor who twice went bankrupt, while Urquhart, in an interview with magazine  Se og Hør last year, warned that her estranged son is a dangerous, lying manipulator who has “brainwashed” his royal bride.

A furious Verrett responded by sending his mother a cease and desist letter, threatening her with a million-dollar lawsuit, and stating that she was not invited to the wedding.

What is not in doubt is that Verrett has a criminal past. In 1991, he was sentenced to five years for felony, arson and trespassing after hosting a party in an unoccupied house which was set on fire. He was arrested again in 1993 and 2011 for crimes including fare evasion and threatening his Los Angeles landlord with murder and “black magic”. In 2015, he was charged with assault and battery after a domestic violence attack on his then fiancé, masseur Hank Greenberg.

But most worrying are Verrett’s wild health claims. In his 2019 book  Spirit Hacking , which was dropped by publisher Cappelen Damm, he declares that children get cancer if they’re unhappy, chemotherapy is a scam, and women need to buy his exercises to “clean out” their vaginas because casual sex attracts subterranean spirits.

In 2022, Verrett sold a medallion that he promised would cure Covid until the Norwegian authorities shut him down. He rants about 5G and the Illuminati, says he has risen from the dead, and that he knew the September 11 attacks would happen but chose not to intervene. Verrett also claims that naughty children and suicidal people are possessed by evil spirits.

One might have thought this horrific statement in particular would deter Märtha Louise, given that her first husband, writer Ari Behn, committed suicide , yet she has been dating and working with Verrett since May 2019. Although they believe they first met centuries ago: “I have memories of us in Egypt,” Verrett said. “She was my queen and I was a pharaoh.”

Märtha Louise stepped down as a senior member of Norway’s royal family in November 2022 but senior figures have continued to criticise the union. In 2023, politician Ole Henrik Krat Bjørkholt labelled Verrett “an unscrupulous and dangerous charlatan”, while many in the Norwegian media have called for Märtha Louise to be stripped of her “princess” title. Most recently she used that title and her royal monogram on a custom gin created for the wedding, but was forced to withdraw it following an uproar.

But that was just one element of this elaborate New Age event, which began on Thursday with a meet and greet at Hotel 1904 in the Norwegian coastal town of Alesund. The couple donned matching bespoke bubblegum-pink outfits by Märtha Louise’s brand Hest. The princess wore a heart-shaped buckle to symbolise, she said, that “love conquers all.”

On Friday, guests were transported by boat to the four-star Hotel Union in the village of Geiranger (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), with views of waterfalls and mountains. That was followed by a glamorous Latin American-themed cocktail party with salsa dancing. The wedding ceremony takes place at about 1pm on Saturday, followed by afternoon tea and then a gala dinner and party (with the bar open till 3am). Finally, there’s a post-wedding brunch on Sunday, which reportedly features performances by Stevie Wonder and the Black Eyed Peas.

The wedding party features seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen – the former likely including Märtha Louise’s daughters, Maud Angelica, 21, Leah Isadora, 19, and Emma Tallulah, 15. Parish Priest Margit Lovise Holte is officiating, while Reverend Michael Beckwith, a New Thought minister whose LA church has been attended by Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle’s mother Doria Ragland, is also participating.

Instead of the country’s national broadcaster and news agency covering the wedding, as is tradition for royal occasions, she and Verrett have struck lucrative deals with Netflix (which is filming a documentary about them) and  Hello! magazine. Guests must abide by a social media ban – although Märtha Louise is already teasing details on her own Instagram.

The Royal House of Norway’s head of communications Guri Varpe has confirmed that the rest of the royal family (which includes Märtha Louise’s parents, King Harald and Queen Sonja, and her brother Crown Prince Haakon, all of whom are staying aboard the Royal Yacht) will avoid being photographed or filmed, since that would give Netflix and  Hello! unfair access.

But that decision perhaps also reflects their serious reservations about this marriage. Although Märtha Louise tells  The Telegraph that her parents “have grown to love Durek very much,” she admits that this union is “extremely, terribly out of the box.”

Other signs that this will not, as Verrett put it, “be just some ordinary wedding,” include the dress code for the pre-wedding party, which – in a departure from royal protocol – is “sexy and cool.” For the ceremony itself, women are asked to wear long ballgowns but to avoid white, all black, all pink and gold, while men are encouraged to think “Oscars red carpet.”

The 350-strong guest list includes celebrities and social media influencers, such as American reality star Cynthia Bailey and body-positive model Margie Plus. Oscar-winner and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow may well be in attendance too: she has called Verrett a “soul brother,” and he and Märtha Louise holidayed with the actress in the Hamptons in 2019.

One notable absentee is 27-year-old Marius Borg Høiby, Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, who earlier this month was arrested on suspicion of physically assaulting a woman and damaging her apartment. He has admitted he was “in a haze of alcohol and cocaine.”

Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip are confirmed to be attending the wedding, along with Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, but many others are steering clear. Isaksen speculated that foreign royal houses “are not too keen on being part of this circus.”

But with such a colourful couple now at the heart of the establishment, this lavish wedding is just the start of a dangerous high-wire act for Norway’s royal family. A recent poll shows that 36 per cent of the public have taken a more negative view of them in the past year. The kook and the shaman could yet reduce a stately institution to a clown car.
