Know before you go

The yacht selection varies depending on weather conditions and/or capacity requirements to make sure you have plenty of space and the smoothest of rides. Dress code is smart casual – no bikinis and footwear to be worn on board. Please have your booking confirmation ready, either on your phone or as a printout. Lifejackets are available on board for those that wish to wear one. Alcohol is not permitted. Arrive 30 minutes before departure. Boarding and briefing will begin 10 minutes before departure. No time is allocated for swimming. Please note that the tour is dependent on weather conditions and therefore may be cancelled by the supplier at any time. In the event of cancellation by the supplier due to weather conditions, please be advised that we will do our best to reschedule the visit or provide a full refund for the tour/ticket

Why are people in Ireland drinking less alcohol?

Bar manager Barry Reilly has noticed some significant changes in attitudes to alcohol in his time pulling pints in the town of Carlingford in County Louth.

"You would get boys coming in on a Saturday for two pints before going and playing a football match, you don't get that now," he told BBC News NI.

"People are more health conscious.

"Younger people have moved away from drinking due to this, they are more inclined to go to coffee bars and places like that."

Figures show people in the Republic of Ireland are drinking less alcohol.

A report by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) to calculate the 2023 average level of consumption found alcohol consumption in the country is down by almost one-third over the past two decades.

Since the peak of 2001, the average per adult alcohol consumption has declined by 31%, according to the report authored by economist and associate professor emeritus at Dublin City University Anthony Foley.

But why has it fallen?

Mr Reilly's belief that people have become more health conscious was one theory shared on the streets of Carlingford.

Other reasons put forward included work commitments, diet and health, price and the option of non-alcoholic alternatives as to why they think people are drinking less alcohol.

Georgia said she would have a drink at the weekend, but she has seen people in her social circles moving away from alcohol.

"One or two friends would drink the non-alcoholic beers when we are out," she said.

Miriam said while she drank "a bottle a wine a week" with her partner, she saw more people drinking less.

"Our son drinks non-alcoholic beers for health benefits," she said.

Decline in alcohol consumption over two decades

Beer is the most popular drink according to the latest figures, making up 42.9% of all consumption in 2023 and remains the highest despite a small decrease on 2022 beer consumption which stood at 43.5%.

Wine is the second most popular at 28.3%, spirits rank as the third with 22.6% and cider accounted for 6.2%.

"Overall, the long-term decline in alcohol consumption over the past two decades indicates that Irish adults are enjoying beer, wine and spirits more moderately," a DIGI spokesperson said.

"We are not just consuming less alcohol, we are consuming differently with the rise in low or zero alcohol product consumption evident."

According to a recent report from Ibec group Drinks Ireland, sales of non-alcoholic beer grew last year by 18%, as production surged by 50%, in response to rising consumer demand.

The representative group’s report showed that non-alcoholic beer’s market share was now over 2%, an almost 100% increase over the last four years.

This increase in the non-alcoholic beverages market in the Republic of Ireland is catching up with European averages and global trend.

In Spain, alcohol-free beer has reached nearly 14% market share.

At an overall EU level, 7% of beer (one in 14 beers) is a non-alcohol alternative.

Mark told BBC News NI he was drinking less due to "getting older", and while fewer people may go to bars, he believed more might be drinking at home.

Phillip told BBC News NI: "Drinking is more of a social thing. I used to drink non-alcoholic beers but my only problem is that they are not much cheaper than the ones with alcohol."

Lisa said she would only really drink while on holiday, highlighting the impact it can have on your health as the reason for her decision.

Jimmy told BBC News NI: "I have found myself drinking less for health reasons. I would drink non-alcoholic because I drive a lot."

Matthew said he was "drinking less with "several occasions where I... drank non-alcoholic beers instead. Depends on where I am travelling from."

Increase in sales of non-alcoholic beers

Mr Reilly also said he had noticed an increase in the sales of non-alcoholic beers and consumer demand for them.

"I thinking people have been drinking less alcohol over the last two years for a few reasons, price is one and another is the choices of non-alcoholic beers.

"It is fast increasing."

Aidan Baker, who also runs a bar in Carlingford, he said he had seen more people drinking non-alcoholic beer and he saw that as an opportunity.

"We are making our own non-alcoholic lager," he said.

"We have a lot of tourists in Carlingford for the day so not everyone who comes in can drink alcohol so they might drink a non-alcoholic beverage."

Two British Bayesian crew members under investigation

Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffiths to be questioned by Italian prosecutors after Mike Lynch’s superyacht sank off Sicily

Two British crew members of Mike Lynch’s sunken superyacht have been placed under investigation for multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck.

It comes after James Cutfield, the captain of the £30 million Bayesian, was put under investigation on Monday.

The inquiry into the tragedy has widened to Tim Parker Eaton, 56, from Bedfordshire, who was in charge of the engine room, and Matthew Griffiths, 22, who was reportedly on watch when the yacht was hit by a violent storm and sank 16 minutes later.

Under the Italian legal system, being placed under investigation does not imply guilt and does not necessarily mean that charges will be made.

Mr Cutfield is expected to be allowed to leave Italy today, several Italian media outlets are reporting. 

The Kiwi skipper has not been charged with any offence and is free to leave the country and return to the home he shares with his wife Cristina in La Palma, Majorca. 

He lost his passport when the Bayesian sank last week but has been given a replacement travel document.

Prosecutors said at the weekend that while he was not obliged to remain in Sicily, they expect him to cooperate with their investigation into why the yacht sank with the loss of seven lives.

Mr Cutfield has an injury to his knee which requires him to use a crutch, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.

Seven people, including British tech tycoon Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah , died when the superyacht sank after it was struck by an extreme weather event known as a downburst about half a mile off the fishing town of Porticello, Sicily. Fifteen people survived, including Mr Lynch’s wife.

Mr Cutfield, the skipper, declined to answer prosecutors’ questions on Tuesday, invoking his legal right to remain silent.

He broke down in tears when he met investigators, according to Italian media reports, with Aldo Mordiglia, his lawyer, saying there were two reasons for Mr Cutfield’s decision not to respond to questions.

“He is understandably distressed,” he said. “In addition, we were only appointed as his lawyers [on Monday] and we need to gather information, which we do not have yet, in order to prepare the defence.”

Supporters of Mr Cutfield in Majorca, where he lives with his wife, have launched a fundraising initiative for him and the crew. Mr Cutfield was reportedly well-known in yachting circles, as were other members of the crew mincluding Mr Thomas. So far, more than £6,800 has been raised.

Paul Madden, the expat behind the initiative, wrote: “I would like the yachting community and anyone else to donate to support the crew and the fellow crew member who sadly lost his life in the line of duty. 

“The funds will be shared equally amongst all of the crew to support them in the mental, physical and financial challenges that lie ahead. I hope the outcome of our help allows the crew to move forward with their lives and can rely on the support of our yachting community.”

Investigators want to establish what measures the crew took to raise the alarm and why the six passengers who died did not leave their cabins and escape to the deck in time.

Asked whether the passengers were warned of the approaching storm, Raffaele Cammarano, one of two prosecutors leading the case, said: “That’s precisely what we’re trying to ascertain from the statements made by the survivors.”

Investigators said the storm that hit the Bayesian about 4am local time on Aug 19 was “an extreme event” that happened “really, really suddenly”.

Prosecutors are scrutinising whether any hatches were left open and whether the keel was partially raised – which would have rendered the yacht less stable.

Post-mortem examinations on the seven victims are expected to be carried out this week at an institute of forensic medicine in nearby Palermo.

Prosecutors say they want the wreck of the yacht to be raised from the seabed as soon as possible, as part of their investigation into how the disaster unfolded.
