Communicate, join the movement, ‘jets & yachts the party’s over’: activists glue themselves to a private jet in ibiza.

In July activists in Ibiza carried out a week-long series of actions against luxury emissions and the 1% who cause them.

“We are glued to a private jet at Ibiza airport because we are really terrified of the consequences of the climate crisis”. This is what Bilbo, an activist from Futuro Vegetal, said to camera during an action that took place during a week of actions in Ibiza.

Four activists from Futuro Vegetal and Extinction Rebellion stormed the runway of Ibiza airport on Friday 14 July, in the area where private jets take off. They sprayed a private jet with paint and glued themselves to it. The activists were detained all morning in the airport police station, and are under investigation for crimes of damage and public disorder.

This latest action at Ibiza airport is part of the campaign ‘Jets and yachts, the party’s over’ by Extinction Rebellion Ibiza, with  different action every day over a week in several symbolic places on the island to denounce the lifestyle of the 1% of the population whose luxury emissions are destroying the planet.

The week of actions also saw them paint the hull of a megayacht in an Ibiza port that belonged to one of the world’s richest women, Nancy Walton, a Walmart heiress.

As Futuro Vegetal explain on their social media accounts: “The only reason we continue to maintain an economic system that leads us to eco-social collapse is to sustain the privileges of this small privileged class.”

The activity of private jets has increased considerably in the Balearic Islands in recent years, with the airports of Ibiza and Palma being the busiest airports in Spain during the months of July and August. These two airports were also the busiest two Spanish airports for private jet traffic in 2022, with 7,932 private jet flights recorded at Palma across the year and 6,606 at Ibiza.

Prior to this action in November, as part of the global campaign Make Them Pay, in conjunction with Stay Grounded,  members of Scientist Rebellion and Extinction Rebellion staged a theatre performance in the restricted private jet area of Ibiza airport with banners reading ‘Stop Private Jets’.

The activists demand the banning of private jets and the reduction of luxury emissions. They urge the Spanish government to redirect subsidies from livestock farming to promote environmentally friendly alternatives.

The action temporarily halted air traffic, according to Futuro Vegetal, although the airport authority denies any disruptions.

The activists emphasise the need to adapt the food system to the climate crisis and criticise political parties for their inadequate response. They call for collective action to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and avoid devastating scenarios.

€300m superyacht Kaos attacked by climate change protestors

The superyacht Kaos, said to be worth €300m ($337M), has been attacked with paint sprayed by fire extinguishers in Ibiza Port by the Spanish climate change protest group Futuro Vegetal.

The 110m (360ft)  Oceanco  vessel is reportedly owned by Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie. After spraying the white yacht’s stern with red and black paint, protestors held up a sign claiming “You consume, others suffer.” Two protestors were arrested at the scene yesterday (July 16th)

The attack follows a similar action against a private jet at Ibiza Airport on Friday (July 14th). A statement on the protest group’s website admitted: “We spray paint using fire extinguishers against the 300 million euro mega-yacht of Nancy Walton, heiress to Walmart and one of the richest women in the world with a fortune of 8.7 billion dollars.”

The yacht protest marked the end of its current campaign, said the group . “The action puts the finishing touch to the “Jets and Yachts, the party is over” campaign, convened by @XRIbiz /Extinction Rebellion Ibiza, who demand a ban on private jets and an end to luxury emissions,” according to its website. The attack on the yacht and the private jet before it sparked a range of comment on social media platforms such as Twitter. (See below).

Superyachts are no stranger to paint-based protest action. In February this year, protestors painted the words Pandemic Profiteer on the 40m (131ft) sailing yacht Lady M belonging to the Scottish entrepreneur and baroness Michelle Mone. The action, in a harbour near Barcelona, Spain by the protest group Led by Donkeys, followed allegations that the Conservative peer may have made undue profits linked to the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the global pandemic. Mone has consistently denied any wrong doing.

Private planes, mansions and superyachts: What gives billionaires like Musk and Abramovich such a massive carbon footprint

Tesla’s Elon Musk and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos have been vying for the world’s richest person ranking all year after the former’s wealth soared a staggering US$160 billion in 2020, putting him briefly in the top spot .

Musk isn’t alone in seeing a significant increase in wealth during a year of pandemic, recession and death. Altogether, the world’s billionaires saw their wealth surge over $1.9 trillion in 2020, according to Forbes.

Those are astronomical numbers, and it’s hard to get one’s head around them without some context. As anthropologists who study energy and consumer culture, we wanted to examine how all that wealth translated into consumption and the resulting carbon footprint.

Walking in a billionaire’s shoes

We found that billionaires have carbon footprints that can be thousands of times higher than those of average Americans.

The wealthy own yachts, planes and multiple mansions, all of which contribute greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. For example, a superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines and pools emits about 7,020 tons of CO2 a year, according to our calculations, making it by the far worst asset to own from an environmental standpoint. Transportation and real estate make up the lion’s share of most people’s carbon footprint, so we focused on calculating those categories for each billionaire.

To pick a sample of billionaires, we started with the 2020 Forbes List of 2,095 billionaires. A random or representatives sample of billionaire carbon footprints is impossible because most wealthy people shy away from publicity , so we had to focus on those whose consumption is public knowledge. This excluded most of the superrich in Asia and the Middle East .

We combed 82 databases of public records to document billionaires’ houses, vehicles, aircraft and yachts. After an exhaustive search, we started with 20 well-known billionaires whose possessions we were able to ascertain, while trying to include some diversity in gender and geography. We have submitted our paper for peer review but plan to continue adding to our list.

We then used a wide range of sources, such as the U.S. Energy Information Administration and Carbon Footprint , to estimate the annual CO2 emissions of each house, aircraft, vehicle and yacht. In some cases we had to estimate the size of houses from satellite images or photos and the use of private aircraft and yachts by searching the popular press and drawing on other studies . Our results are based on analyzing typical use of each asset given its size and everything else we could learn.

We did not try to calculate each asset’s “ embodied carbon ” emissions – that is, how much CO2 is burned throughout the supply chain in making the product – or the emissions produced by their family, household employees or entourage. We also didn’t include the emissions of companies of which they own part or all, because that would have added another significant degree of complexity. For example, we didn’t calculate the emissions of Tesla or Amazon when calculating Musk’s or Bezos’ footprints.

In other words, these are all likely conservative estimates of how much they emit.

Your carbon footprint

To get a sense of perspective, let’s start with the carbon footprint of the average person.

Residents of the U.S., including billionaires, emitted about 15 tons of CO2 per person in 2018. The global average footprint is smaller, at just about 5 tons per person.

In contrast, the 20 people in our sample contributed an average of about 8,190 tons of CO2 in 2018. But some produced far more greenhouse gases than others.

The jet-setting billionaire

Roman Abramovich, who made most of his $19 billion fortune trading oil and gas, was the biggest polluter on our list. Outside of Russia, he is probably best known as the headline-grabbing owner of London’s Chelsea Football Club.

Abramovich cruises the Mediterranean in his superyacht, named the Eclipse , which at 162.5 meters bow to stern is the second-biggest in the world, rivaling some cruise ships. And he hops the globe on a custom-designed Boeing 767 , which boasts a 30-seat dining room. He takes shorter trips in his Gulfstream G650 jet, one of his two helicopters or the submarine on his yacht.

He maintains homes in many countries, including a mansion in London’s Kensington Park Gardens, a chateau in Cap D’Antibes in France and a 28-hectare estate in St. Barts that once belonged to David Rockefeller . In 2018, he left the U.K. and settled in Israel , where he became a dual citizen and bought a home in 2020 for $64.5 million.

We estimate that he was responsible for at least 33,859 metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2018 – more than two-thirds from his yacht, which is always ready to use at a moment’s notice year-round.

Massive mansions and private jets

Bill Gates, currently the world’s fourth-richest person with $124 billion, is a “modest” polluter – by billionaire standards – and is typical of those who may not own a giant yacht but make up for it with private jets.

Co-founder of Microsoft, he retired in 2020 to manage the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest charity, with an endowment of $50 billion.

In the 1990s, Gates built Xanadu – named after the vast fictional estate in Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” – at a cost of $127 million in Medina, Washington. The giant home covers 6,131 square meters, with a 23-car garage, a 20-person cinema and 24 bathrooms. He also owns at least five other dwellings in Southern California, the San Juan Islands in Washington state, North Salem, New York, and New York City, as well as a horse farm , four private jets, a seaplane and “a collection” of helicopters .

We estimated his annual footprint at 7,493 metric tons of carbon, mostly from a lot of flying.

The environmentally minded tech CEO

South African-born Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, has a surprisingly low carbon footprint despite being the world’s second-richest person, with $177 billion – and he seems intent on setting an example for other billionaires .

He doesn’t own a superyacht and says he doesn’t even take vacations .

We calculated a relatively modest carbon footprint for him in 2018, thanks to his eight houses and one private jet. This year, his carbon footprint would be even lower because in 2020 he sold all of his houses and promised to divest the rest of his worldly possessions .

While his personal carbon footprint is still hundreds of times higher than that of an average person, he demonstrates that the superrich still have choices to make and can indeed lower their environmental impact if they so choose.

His estimated footprint from the assets we looked at was 2,084 tons in 2018.

The value of naming and shaming

The aim of our ongoing research is to get people to think about the environmental burden of wealth.

While plenty of research has shown that rich countries and wealthy people produce far more than their share of greenhouse gas emissions, these studies can feel abstract and academic, making it harder to change this behavior.

We believe “shaming” – for lack of a better word – superrich people for their energy-intensive spending habits can have an important impact, revealing them as models of overconsumption that people shouldn’t emulate.

Newspapers, cities and local residents made an impact during the California droughts of 2014 and 2015 by “drought shaming” celebrities and others who were wasting water, seen in their continually green lawns . And the Swedes came up with a new term – “ flygskam ” or flying shame – to raise awareness about the climate impact of air travel.

Climate experts say that to have any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, countries must cut their emissions in half by 2030 and eliminate them by 2050.

Asking average Americans to adopt less carbon-intensive lifestyles to achieve this goal can be galling and ineffective when it would take about 550 of their lifetimes to equal the carbon footprint of the average billionaire on our list.

How To Host The Most Memorable Yacht Party Ever

A yacht party is one of the most fun and extravagant ways to celebrate an occasion. Not only are they unique, but they can also be far more versatile than you might think. It's the ultimate venue for a glamorous party; think top-notch DJs, magically mixed drinks, and your favorite vape juice  here are a few tips for planning and throwing the ultimate yacht party.

Pick the Right Yacht

Firstly, you need to pick the right yacht. They come in all shapes and sizes, and some are better for parties than others. You need to pick one that is the right size but in terms of space for guests, not a boat that is big because it has an onboard gym, helipad, etc. You need one that can hold dozens of guests comfortably. 

One-Day vs. Multi-Day

The need for beds and extra facilities will also come into play if this is a multi-day event. If you are planning on guests staying on the yacht, you need one big enough to house them, not just one with enough space for a party.

Bedding Options

Many yachts will have multiple sleeping options, which would include couches that can be turned into beds. It is important to remember that there are limitations; therefore, you need to have a set guest list for those who will sleep on the yacht well before the party date. 

Considering this is a party, you need a yacht that is fitted with extra facilities, such as a kitchen, bathroom, possibly showers, etc. It would be difficult to have an easy-flowing party if guests had to constantly leave the boat to go to the bathroom, get food, etc. 

Docked vs. At Sea

Another decision you need to make is whether the yacht will be docked or if you will go out to sea. Docked is typically easier as you can have all your food and drinks on land, and there are more options for guests to move around, sit somewhere else, etc. 

Going out to sea is far more fun and exciting, but it does require more planning. You need to ensure that the yacht is fully stocked with everything you may need, from bottle openers to toilet paper, as well as all the food and drinks for all your guests.

When it comes to weather, it isn’t about safety at sea, as your captain will make that decision, but it is more about guest comfort and available undercover space. If you are out at sea and it begins to rain, and you all have to get below deck or under cover, it can be a very tight squeeze. 

Instead, choose a yacht that has ample cover or below-deck space, or ensure you have large umbrellas that can be set up in the event of a downpour. 

Pick a Theme

Once you have chosen your yacht, a theme is a great way to add a layer of fun to the entire event. When it comes to themes, the sky is the limit, as you can choose almost anything, and it can easily work in a yacht setting. 

A few themes that always work well are black-tie, James Bond, etc. To add an extra layer of excitement, consider a pirate-themed extravaganza where guests can don their finest pirate costumes  and embark on an unforgettable voyage of swashbuckling adventure and maritime merriment. The goal is to make the theme memorable, as an average theme can quickly turn the party into a forgettable event. 

Food & Drink

Food and drinks are two of the most important things for any party. The first decision you need to make is whether you will have buffet-style food  or canapes that can be handed out throughout the night. Depending on your budget and the amount of guests you have, you can hire a chef to cook lunch or dinner onboard, too. 

For drinks, many high-end yachts will have a bar; this means you can hire a bartended for the day/night that can serve drinks and also mix up a few cocktails for your guests. All of these things will cost more money, but it does add an extravagant touch that is hard to beat.

Music & Entertainment 

Another essential for any great party is music and entertainment. Once again, you have multiple options for both, depending on your budget. If you want it to be more budget-friendly, a laptop or phone with a few playlists  plugged into the sound system will do the job. 

If you want to go the extra mile, you can hire a DJ to come play at the party. There will be ample space for them to set up, and not only will it keep the party going all night long, but being able to do requests, sing-alongs, etc, make the event that much more fun. 

Finally, it is always important for you and your guests to understand the safety aspect of being on a yacht, especially if you go out to sea. Consulting with the captain beforehand will allow you to create a mini “safety briefing” that can be included with the invitations. 

It is also important to clearly tape off or lock areas or rooms that shouldn’t be accessed by guests. Once again, the captain can handle this, but making signs and informing your guests will ensure everyone is on the same page and stays safe throughout the party.

How Air Partner’s JetCard Program Changed Private Aviation

Air Partner’s Ty Smith on why its JetCard remains the longest running private jet membership on the market.

There once was a time when, even for the lucky few, flying by private jet was reserved for only the imagination. Today, as the market floods with more and more options on how to get you down the runway, the challenge has become trying to find a program that works for you; with your lifestyle, work and family life. From fractional ownership , membership programs , chartering flights or outright ownership , there have never been so many ways to get you into the skies. 

One of the companies that has been leading the way with its JetCard program for almost two decades is Air Partner. We may take for granted now how jet cards have become fundamental in many ultra-high-net-worths’ travel plans, but this dominance within the private aviation market is only fairly recent. While Air Partner was founded in 1961 and has been providing brokering services, including private jet and commercial airliner charters since 1980, its JetCard scheme was introduced back in 2008 – making it by all accounts one of the longest-running private aviation membership programs on the market. 

A JetCard membership works by signing up for a pre-paid card that then secures 25-hour blocks or more of flying and guarantees first-class access to Air Partner’s best-in-class fleet – from entry-level light cabin jets like Phenom 300 and Pilatus PC-24 , or more spacious global-category cabin aircraft like the Gulfstream G650 . And when members are not flying, there are no charges, with an endless expiry date on hours used, allowing for annual under and overflying with no penalty or premium attached.

In other words, as Ty Smith, director of JetCard UK, puts it: “The JetCard just takes all of those headaches away from our members.”

The popularity of the JetCard and its quick integration into the industry is easy to understand, not least because it’s much more than an affordable and accessible gateway into the world of private aviation. As Smith tells me over video call from the company’s headquarters near London’s Gatwick Airport , the program is intended to be the middle ground between fractional ownership and chartering services. “The people that tend to want to join our membership program are fed up with the inconsistencies of the charter market, and they want some quality and consistency around the aircraft selection.

“But on the fractional ownership side,” Smith continues, “if you’re not sure exactly how many hours you’re going to be using or if you want to upgrade or downgrade, it can be quite costly.” On the alternative, a JetCard membership is not a long-term binding contract and members can upgrade from a chosen category or downgrade, and there are no premium interchange rates for members to deal with.

Smith joined the company 12 years ago, spending his first 10 years at Air Partner in its sales department. “ I think what that gave me was a really good understanding of what our members actually want,” he tells me. He goes on to explain that the collaborative working environment at Air Partner means he has always been a part of shaping the program to some degree over the years, but he was officially offered the chance to lead the JetCard service 18 months ago.

As Smith suspects, this understanding and open communication with its members is one of the key reasons why Air Partner is one of the longest-running jet card programs. In fact, longevity seems to be a running theme at Air Partner – perhaps a testimony to the brand’s success. 

Smith introduced me to Stuart Larkin, an account manager at JetCard, who has been working on the program for 17 years, and he tells me that this insight and awareness for their members has always been at the heart of Air Partner’s approach: “It has never been simply an account management affair, but an in-depth understanding of our members’ expectations and inclinations – their lifestyle and what it takes to be a part of that.” 

Another of Smith’s colleagues, senior sales director Chris Thomas, tells me that within the 10 employees that make up the account management team, there are more than 150 years of industry experience, all contributing to bringing that premier personalized touch to Air Partne r ’s approach to its members.

However, something both Larkin and Smith point to is the prominent change over recent years has not been with Air Partner, but in the attitude of its members. “There has been a huge shift in terms of sort of our members’ behavior over the years, where we see a lot more forward bookings now than we ever used to,” Smith explains. “Our forward bookings are probably up 100% of what they were last year.”

Smith is also quick to point out that this behavioral change is not seen in all of the JetCard members either, and that it seems to be the leisure users who are getting organized and booking months in advance. As well as satisfying the designated control freak in their lives, there are benefits to this preference towards planning vacations well in advance, and it’s a jet-setting lifestyle that seems to perfectly complement the JetCard system. “We can then book far in advance and get first access to the best aircraft and get to the front of the queue for slots,” Smith explains. “Because at some of these airports like Courchevel , slots are at a premium.” 

And booking in advance doesn’t mean members are tied down or committed to these flights either. Air Partner ’s flexible flight cancellation terms mean flights can be canceled up until three days before departure without costing the JetCard holder anything. “You can say, ‘right, let’s put this in, let’s pencil this in,’ and then if you have to amend it by a day or two or you have to cancel it altogether, you can do so right up until three days before the date of departure with no fees at all.”

For those JetCard users with a more spontaneous attitude or unpredictable schedule, this cancellation policy is, of course, a massive appeal and advantage of Air Partner’s program. As well as the fact that Air Partner’s concierge team takes care of all the admin involved in booking a flight to begin with. “If one of our members is looking to go somewhere and they give us their schedule, within the hour we can send them an itinerary, and that effectively confirms their booking.” 

In other words, a JetCard holder can have their flight confirmed in less time than it takes to pack. “Corporates or corporations have more sort of last minute plans, where they have business meetings and timings and passenger numbers that change right up until the flight,” Smith expands, “[JetCard] allows them a lot more or affords them a lot more flexibility in their schedules.”

Of course, all these practical benefits are important and make the process seamless once a member has already signed up into the JetCard program, but they wouldn’t matter if Air Partner’s service wasn’t as equally as accommodating, streamlined and (most importantly) luxurious. No matter where they may be in the world, from the moment members pull up to their elite private terminal – as little as 20 minutes ahead of their flight, may we add – travel is transformed into a personable and enjoyable experience: from being greeted by the captain and crew in the departure lounge, to being served fresh Nobu sushi and glasses of Gusbourne Brut Reserve , one of England’s leading sparkling wine producers (the partnership means those departing the UK will also be gifted a bottle, too, in Air Partner’s version of an airport souvenir).

It’s almost no surprise, then, that a successful model like JetCard would be replicated by other private charter providers. But on Air Partner’s part, certainly for Smith, they seem unphased by any potential competition in the jet card market. “In terms of sort of competitors, I mean, obviously, we can’t control other companies setting up,” Smith rebuts. “But we have to draw on our strengths – and that’s our experience.” 

His confidence isn’t misplaced. Air Partner’s experience and longevity have turned its JetCard program from a pioneer in private aviation to an industry leader. And while the world of luxury travel is always undergoing some form of change, we’re certain that Air Partner’s JetCard program isn’t going anywhere soon.
