Make the most of our coast

catamaran training uk

The beautiful South Coast of England is definitely the place to be in the summer and if you have ever thought of spending a weekend or a week on a luxury catamaran with your family or friends, we can make it happen in style. On a private charter, you get the boat to yourself with the skipper there to look after you, to advise on where to go, to show you the ropes and how a catamaran works – ideal as a familiarisation course for charter abroad. The price includes the yacht, the skipper, berthing at Gosport and free parking for a car.

Weymouth, Dorset

Sailing trips

We pioneered the idea of charter-a-berth, with organised weekend trips to exciting destinations at minimal cost to each guest. This year we have an exciting range of destinations. Book-a-berth sailing weekends are a fantastic way to get out on the water at a great price. Trips are suitable for novice and experienced sailors, each being led by a professional instructor. Sailing, sight-seeing, learning or just socialising – the choice is yours, but you are definitely part of the crew. This year, in addition to the weekend trips, there’ll also be long weekends and longer trips to more distant destinations.

Solent Sail is an RYA approved sea school and can therefore run courses at all levels – Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore. Training on a catamaran is a always a little different to a mono-hull, but your qualification is not restricted and our instructors will explain where the differences are important. Ultimately a catamaran provides more space and comfort for the trainees and we make sure that the equipment on board is of the highest standard. A training course with us is also great primer for chartering overseas. We can show you how to manoeuvre under engine, trim the sails, anchor with a bridle, pick up buoys and all the other skills that are key to safe and enjoyable sailing.

A yacht makes a great venue for some corporate team building, client entertainment or just a treat for a job well done. A catamaran enhances the experience for the guests and puts everyone together on one level, half inside and half outside. The itinerary is up to you, but as an example a day might comprise: 9:00 – join the boat in Gosport with a glass of champagne or juice and croissants or bacon rolls served by our stewardess. 9:30 – the skipper will provide a safety brief and a tour of the boat 10:00 – depart the dock, raise the sails and head out of the harbour 12:00 – stop on the Isle of Wight for lunch overlooking the sea 14:00 – return to the yacht for a virtual yacht race or treasure hunt 17:00 – arrive back at Gosport. Prizes for the winning teams 17:30 – depart the yacht.

This month’s nautical quiz was – a yachtsman turns up at the fuel pontoon with a 5-litre container and asks the attendant to put 4 litres of diesel in it. Unfortunately he only has a 3-litre jug. How can the men measure exactly 4 litres of diesel using just the two containers? And the answer – First fill up the 3-litre jug. Pour this in to the 5-litre container. Refill the jug and again poor it into the 5-litre container until it is full. This leaves 1 litre in the jug. Empty the 5-litre container back in to the storage tank and pour the 1 litre in the 3-litre jug in to the 5-litre container. Fill the 3-litre jug again and pour it in to the 5-litre container. The container will now have 4 litres in it.

International Bareboat Skipper Sail - Catamaran

This is a 5 to 6 day course.  This course is not for beginners. This is a certificate of competency for those candidates who wish to train to command a catamaran sailboat up to 24 metres in length, in fair weather and in sight of land.

  • Candidates should be 16 years of age or over.
  • To have logged with proof of a total of 200 nautical miles and 10 days at sea by the end of course.
  • Must have taken IYT’s International Crew physical course with an IYT Partner School (candidates must either hold an IYT International Crew Certificate proving they have taken and passed the course, OR, a gold seal affixed to the IYT Boating & Sailing Passport signed by the school’s principal). Or they must hold an equivalent qualification from another training organisation
  • Hold an IYT VHF Radio Operators Certificate or equivalent from another training organisation. * Please note that we do not accept ISSA VHF qualifications. (I f you are unsure if your radio license will be accepted, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to [email protected] .  We will verify that your license is sufficient to receive the IYT International Bareboat Skipper Catamaran license).

Note:  For IYT recreational certification, a “day at sea” is defined as 8 hours at sea, but not at anchor for prolonged periods of time. This certificate is the level of competence that one needs when chartering a boat in the Mediterranean or West Indies where there are restrictions in terms of cruising area and distance from the base.

IYT’s International Bareboat Skipper Sail – Catamaran Certificate covers command of a sailing vessel with a sail area of greater than 80 square metres/861 square feet. Please see the official statement here.

If a candidate already holds an IYT Flotilla or Bareboat Skipper Sail certificate, the modules for catamaran training should be a 1.5 to 2 day course. A review of the Flotilla or Bareboat Skipper course should be considered at the beginning of the course. Those who have obtained the International Bareboat Skipper Sail – Catamaran qualification, can automatically obtain the “International Certificate of Competency” (ICC), provided the student meets the requirements as laid down by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40).  Please click this link for more information.  Please note that the ICC Certificate will not state “catamaran”.

Certificate Limitations

  • Command of a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 metres.
  • In coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore
  • Most charter agencies will insist on daylight hours as a condition to charter.

As you advance and become more proficient as crew or skipper you take on bigger challenges that require proper training to ensure the safety of your family and friends. The bigger the boat or length of adventure the more training you require.

Most of us prefer to spend our time on the water and not in a classroom. To facilitate this, IYT has a series of E-learning courses available for the theoretical part of sail and powerboat training.

  • Take one of our online (Elearning) courses for your next level of training.
  • Plan your practical training at one of our many schools worldwide to earn your final qualification.
  • Book in advance with your school as class sizes and availability may be limited.
  • Review the IYT course progression details to learn about professional level courses.
  • Spend time on the water and properly log your seatime.

The Boating Lifestyle is one of the most rewarding pursuits available. There is something physically and emotionally invigorating when you are offshore. To enjoy the experience fully you need the proper training & skills to be safe, prepared and command a vessel.

Sailing School

If you have always fantasized about chartering a sailing yacht or catamaran setting sail towards the open sea, and feeling the excitement and wind in your hair with you behind the steering wheel, contact us!

Sailing Europe offers sailing lessons for beginners, refreshment courses and advanced sailing courses for their clients. We will find a suitable program for you in any of the numerous destinations from our catalogue - from the always popular Mediterranean ( Croatia , Greece , Italy , etc.) to the Caribbean and the more exotic Seychelles and Thailand .

Sailing course with skipper instructor

Whether you already have a license but have not sailed in a while or are a total beginner with an immense will to learn how to sail – you have come to the right place. Refreshment courses are great if you have not sailed in a while and would like an expert near you to refresh your memory and even show you some new tips and tricks.

The usual sailing school course is held on sailing yachts. However, recently, there has been an increase in demand for catamaran sailing schools .  If you're interested in learning how to sail a catamaran and would like to try it out with the guidance of professionals before you charter one on your own, we are happy to find the best sailing course for you.

There are sailing schools that provide just a course (without obtaining a license after the end of the course) and there are courses at the end of which you can receive a sailing license. The usual license obtained is RYA . However, there are others you can obtain – such as ISPA , ASA , etc.

Keep in mind that you can choose individual sailing lessons or decide on a group class. If there are other students with you, then the expenses of sailing school are divided by the number of students.

The Cruising Catamaran Certification Course is a four-day sailing class designed to create confident, competent catamaran sailors. You’ll spend the first day learning the fundamentals of sailing while aboard a 33-39’ monohull. This is the perfect setting to learn terminology, sail trim and boating basics. Days 2-4 have you practicing and exhibiting those new skills aboard your catamaran classroom. From start to finish, you will get the feel for truly living aboard a catamaran from provisioning and cooking to cleaning. This is the perfect course for those that have always dreamed about sailing away on a catamaran or those who want to upgrade their skills.

This course is designed to train two sets of students at a time but can be set up as a private course for an additional fee. You should bring your own bedding and towels and plan to work with the other students to provide and prepare provisioning while on board the boat. You will spend one overnight at anchor with your instructor on board. The rest of the time, you can plan on living on the boat while in the marina.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

How to find us

  • Top Cat’s sailing instructor

For those who are particularly interested in Multihulls, The Multihull Centre with Richard Woods designs and Darren Newton and his Dazcats are just a wander down the beach at Multi Marine Composites.  Millbrook is the home of the Multihull in the South West. There are about fifty cats and trimarans moored here. I am based here but we normally start our courses at Mayflower Marina in Plymouth. Easier to find by far and faster.

How to get there

Driving? Come down the A38 to Plymouth and come off the A38 at Plymouth. Head into the city centre. Follow signs for the Torpoint ferry. You will drive through the city and find yourself on Union street. Follow this passing Aldi and Lidl. Then keep straight on over a roundabout and past lots of motor cruisers at Marine Projects. At the next roundabout turn left onto Richmond Walk. Mayflower is at the end. Just go through the barrier and park.

I’m on 07974 779298 if you get lost.

There are good rail links to Plymouth and a 5 minute taxi ride takes you to the Mayflower Marina on Richmond walk. PL1 4LS.

Fall overboard from sail training vessel Pelican of London with loss of 1 life

Location: Sharpness, England.

Accident Investigation Report 10/2024

Read our marine accident investigation report, which includes what happened, subsequent actions taken and recommendations:

MAIB investigation report 10-2024: Pelican of London

Pelican of London

At 2308 on 2 October 2023, the volunteer relief cook on Pelican of London fell from the top of the vessel’s gangway into the flooded drydock while under the influence of alcohol. His absence was not noted until the next morning and a search was started. In the early afternoon of 3 October 2023, police divers recovered the relief cook’s body to the dockside where he was declared deceased.

Safety issues

the gangway did not provide a safe means of access to Pelican of London

on board training and risk assessments did not mitigate the risk of a fall from the gangway

the relief cook was above the legal limit for duty on board Pelican of London and the drug and alcohol policy did not specify parameters for crew returning on board from recreational time ashore

Recommendations

The vessel owners, Seas Your Future, were recommended (2024/130, 2024/131 and 2024/132) to review and amend: its policy and training for the rigging and approval of the gangway when used; the risk assessment procedure; and the fleet policy and procedure for dealing with drugs and/or alcohol.

A safety flyer to the shipping industry was produced with this report, signposting guidance on how to safely rig a gangway.

'Running left me with a pelvic stress fracture – but it taught me lifelong lessons'

I averaged four 5ks per week

stress fracture

Women’s Health’s Fitness Director Bridie Wilkins, 30, sustained a pelvic stress fracture after excessive running without strength training to build muscle and protect her bones. Since, she's used weight training to stem the effects of osteopenia.

I was 21 when, while running on a treadmill on holiday in Portugal, I felt a pain so severe it felt like I’d been stabbed in the groin. I limped back to my hotel room in tears and took some painkillers, writing it off as a sprain. But in the months that followed, the pain roared back.

Several physiotherapists and an X-ray later, I was still without answers. Finally, after ten months of pain, an MRI revealed a pelvic stress fracture too small for the X-ray to spot, and I was sent for a DEXA scan, which measures bone density. Only then was I diagnosed with osteopenia; a pre-cursor to osteoporosis – a condition that weakens bones, making them more likely to break – osteopenia occurs when you have lower than average bone density for your age.

running stress fracture

I was devastated. Doctors treating me believed it had been brought on by excessive running (I was averaging four 5ks per week), alongside a calcium deficiency; I’m dairy intolerant and calcium (obtained primarily from dairy) is essential for strong bones. Alongside a diligent regime of calcium supplementation , I was under strict instructions to rest until the pain subsided – even day-to-day walking was discouraged.

As someone for whom fitness is as much of a mental salve as it is a physical one, the seven months that followed were among the longest of my life. When I was finally signed off to exercise again (17 months after the incident), I knew my routine had to change – and I'd interviewed enough experts about the power of strength training for bone health to know I had to incorporate weights into my workout week.

stress fracture

I started doing one full-body strength YouTube workout weekly for six weeks, increasing by one workout every two weeks until I hit three. But if I took it up for my bones, I kept it up for my mind – every new PB delivering a fresh wave of motivation to see what my body could do next. Not only have I stayed injury-free, I’ve overhauled my health.

stress fracture

In January 2023, at a health retreat in Switzerland , another DEXA scan revealed my bones to be much closer to the ‘normal’ tissue range. Having been warned by doctors that it wouldn’t be possible to improve my bone density - only to slow osteopenia’s progression – the relief was overwhelming. It’s the reason strength training remains the focal point of my workout week – and the reason I harp on about it to anyone who’ll listen.

What are the benefits of strength training in your 30s?

Sports medicine doctor Dr Rebecca Robinson says: ‘Muscle mass decreases by between three and eight percent per decade after 30, and strength training limits this by triggering hypertrophy – when your muscles break down and grow back stronger.

'As your muscles weaken, your bones have less cushioning, and impact force from lifting weights leads to bone formation by laying cells called osteoblasts – the precursor to new bone, and stimulating cells called osteoclasts, responsible for helping older bone tissue renew and repair.’

How often should women strength train in their 30s?

‘Aim for 30 to 40-minute sessions, three to four times per week. This will be sufficient to build both bone density and muscle. After four to six weeks, consider progressively overloading the amount of weight you lift in these sessions by five to 10 per cent every two weeks, to safely increase the amount of stress on your bones and joints.’

Which other types of exercise should you combine with strength training in their 30s?

‘Take up yoga or Pilates once or twice weekly to build core strength and improve balance, enabling you to lift heavier. Finally, add in one weekly session of aerobic exercise to maintain good cardiovascular health; low-intensity steady-state jogging is a good choice for bone production if that’s your focus ( high-intensity intervals and sprints are too impactful), while swimming and cycling are extra low-impact options if you feel sore.'
