Corsair 880 out of Wareham Massachusetts

On a cold November afternoon, we rolled up to the dock at the ancient Cape Cod Shipyard, hard along the waters of the Wareham River Basin, for the concluding sail of our 2021 Boat of the Year campaign aboard the Corsair 880, a 28-foot folding trimaran built in, of all places, Vietnam. It wasn’t on purpose, but you could easily say we saved the best for last. The best sail in our 2021 BOTY sea trials, that is.

We were joined by Bob Gleason, who’s been peddling fast tris for as long as we can remember, and Dave Reed, the editor of our sister publication, Sailing World : two boys who always can be counted on to press on a bit more sail. In other words, for the task ahead, darn-near perfect companions.

The classic Buzzard’s Bay sea breeze had kicked in, appropriately—like, what else is new?—as we powered out of the basin and into the fresh southwesterly. Up went the big, roachy, powerful square-topped mainsail, and out went the self-tending jib. We were sailing.

The Corsair 880 is cool, cool, cool. Comfortable canvas bench seats. A nice little interior with all the basics for pleasant camping-style cruises. A rotating carbon-fiber spar. A tiller with an extension, and the traveler and mainsheet right at hand. Sails up, daggerboard down. As good as it gets.

We tacked upwind for a while to say we did, got some numbers, and then the real fun commenced. First, bye-bye jib; hello Code Zero. Welcome to the realm of double-digit boat speeds, which always feel faster when you’re reaching on a screamer under 30 feet. Greetings, sailing world, indeed.

We swapped the helm back and forth, and took snapshots of one another. Who had the biggest smile? It was a tie. Then the kite went up for the run back to the dock. Heaven on Buzzard’s Bay.

There wasn’t another boat around, and for that matter, there wasn’t another boat in the competition that matched up with the Corsair. But you can be sure as heck we were still going to name it the year’s Best Sportboat. Which we could. So we did.

As the sun set over Buzzard’s Bay, it also set on Boat of the Year 2021 . Thanks, one and all, for the memories.

Multihull of the year

Corsair 880

An easy-to-transport trimaran that’s comfortable for both cruising and racing. This is how the 880 comes across, a worthy heir to the famous F-27, an iconic model launched back in 1986. This time, the yard started from a blank canvas and integrated elements of comfort previously unknown on board a trimaran of less than 30’ (9 m): complete lighting system, refrigerator, manual or electric toilets, and even reversible air conditioning are available! Performance enthusiasts can rest assured: the air conditioning and generator are removable... And the Corsair 880, available in a Sport version with its carbon mast, should be able to fully convince them!

Chafe Protection for Dock Lines

This unusual and innovative trimaran is not only fast, she can even fold up while still afloat.

corsair trimaran 27

You can count the number of successful builders of production fiberglass cruising multihulls on the fingers of one hand. In the U.S., Tony Smith of Mayo, Maryland, who builds the 30′ Gemini catamaran, is certainly a pioneer, having developed the ill-fated 26′ Telstar trimaran many years ago (the molds were destroyed in a fire). Condor Ltd. and the Outrigger Boat Co. have made some inroads into the market and have helped in the grudging conversion of American sailors to multihulls.

A number of European builders, most notably the British builder Prout and more recently Prestige and Ohlala from France, import to the U.S. a handful of boats each year.

None, however, has made a splash as big as Ian Farrier’s F-27 trailerable tri, first launched in 1985.

Farrier is a New Zealander who moved to Australia after college and began building small racing/cruising trimarans. His 19′ Tramp was Australia’s 1981 Boat of the Year. In 1984 he moved to California to begin work on the F-27 and to patent the folding mechanism that makes trailering possible.

When PS readers who own F-27s began writing to us about their boats, we took note. “Look at the F-27,” they said, “it’s something special.” A number of them sent in our Owner’s Questionnaire with raves about speed, construction and company service.

Construction

The F-27 is all fiberglass with a PVC foam core in the hull and deck. An NPG gelcoat is used, backed by AME 4000 (acrylic modified epoxy) resin. In areas of high stress, double bias fabrics, Kevlar, and carbon fiber are used. Vacuum bagging techniques are employed to ensure constant and uniform pressure on both sides of any laminate. Excess air and resin is bled off to achieve the desired, calculated weight. Light weight is essential to good multihull performance.

Unlike a monohull, which is built from basically two molds (hull and deck), the F-27 requires 52. Besides the main hull there are the two amas and four akas (cross beams), not to mention all the smaller moldings for the pop top, outboard well, hatches, and sinks. The F-27 possesses a definite “assembled” look rather than being a homogenous whole. As your eye surveys the numerous attachment points—hull/ deck joints, akas to amas, etc.—there seem to be numerous potential weak spots. The builder, however, claims there have been no failures, and we have not had reports of any. This is no doubt due to the use of quality high-tech materials and extremely careful engineering. After all, the F-27 represents nearly two decades of refinement on the original concept, not unlike the last generation of Volkswagen Beetles.

Of particular interest are the folding akas. A company brochure explains: “The beams are bolted down into molded recesses with two bolts each, the bolts being anchored into specially reinforced internal bulkheads. Once bolted the beams are strong enough on their own for all loadings. However, add the lower struts (part of the folding mechanism) and these become the primary structural members, actually relieving all bending stresses from the inner ends of the beams. Sailing is then quite possible without any bolts in beams at all! The beam bolts thus act as a backup system in the unlikely event of a folding strut failure. But should this occur the beams simply take over all loadings making the inboard structure completely safe. The actual folding struts are precision engineered from solid high strength aluminum, with nylon bush inserts being used at the pivot points with stainless steel pivot bolts.”

The akas can be folded underway while motoring, heading for the slip or launch ramp. Total beam with both amas folded in is 8′ 5″. Therein lies its appeal to Southern California sailors, who find slip space expensive if not unavailable. Also, it makes cruising Baja and the Sea of Cortez a practical adventure. Baja is the only really good cruising ground in that area, but too far to reach under sail for short term vacations.

F-27

The trailering feature will be less appealing to sailors elsewhere, except that the ability to store the boat in the backyard saves yard fees and makes maintenance a far easier chore.

The centerboard and rudders are foam-cored fiberglass with carbon fiber added for strengthening. Unlike most builders, Corsair publishes its lamination for all parts; indeed, the documentation and control evidenced at Corsair is rather extraordinary in the sailing industry.

Much of the hardware is made by Harken, including the mainsheet traveler, blocks and cleats. One reader wrote, “As the boat is well rigged, you will not need to replace any of the rigging such as winches, etc. Everything is both top quality and over-engineered.”

The boat we sailed was equipped with Lewmar #30 jib sheet winches, #24 self-tailing genoa and halyard winches; the linestoppers were made by Antal.

Performance

The F-27 is a fast boat. Obviously, speed was a priority of the design. The rig is tall and no attempt was made to provide standing headroom in the cabin, which would have added windage and weight. Already it has achieved some success racing, though it can’t be compared to monohulls and there are only a few other multihulls in its range (compare to the Newick-designed Somersault 26, Firefly 26, Dragonfly 25 and Stiletto 27). Unfortunately, we are unaware of any head-to-head competition between these boats.

We sailed Tony Cabot’s new F-27 from his mooring in Squantum, Massachusetts, under mainsail and working jib. The fully battened main can be reefed on the roller boom, though there wasn’t enough wind for us to see how the sail would set.

As we tacked out of Quincy Bay and into Boston Harbor, the wind was light (usually the case in test sails!). The boat moved effortlessly and heeled little (even in heavy weather, trimarans shouldn’t heel more than 12° to 15°). The helm was very well balanced, requiring just fingertip control (one reader said he had tuned the rig to add a little weather helm).

Approaching a fleet of racing monohulls at the harbor entrance, the 30- and 40-footers were making just a knot or so and appeared virtually dead in the water. We, on the other hand, slipped past at five knots in about as much wind, and we confess to feeling quite smug. With the board down, we also were able to point fairly high with the apparent wind between 35° and 40°, though of course multihulls are more comfortable and efficient cracked off, especially in a sea. With the F-27, this is due in part to its relatively flat, planing bottom.

In normal conditions, the F-27 can be expected to make seven to eight knots to windward. On a spinnaker reach in winds over 20 knots, speeds faster than 20 knots are possible. Cabot told me that he’d tried his darnedest to tip the boat over, but couldn’t do it (we assume he meant that the boat was not easily overpowered).

Though the F-27 is not as large a boat, with as much righting moment, as many sailors would prefer, it has made safe transoceanic passages, including California to Hawaii and New England to Europe. Through-bolting the pop top is one safety measure you’d want to take for such a passage.

F-27 owners are somewhat apologetic about the livability of the interior, mostly because there isn’t standing headroom except under the pop top, which covers the immediate galley area forward of the companionway. An optional screen/curtain encloses the sides for protection against mosquitos, gnats and other pests.

“The lack of interior space,” one reader wrote, “is a drawback compared to a monohull.”

The overall layout is clever but a bit cramped. The forward V-berth is suitable for but one medium-height person because the bow is too narrow for four feet. A head and sink are also located in this cabin, separated from the saloon by a partial bulkhead.

F-27

The main cabin has opposing settees with a convertible table hung on the daggerboard trunk. An optional insert unites the settees into one large berth. There is stowage outboard. The galley is aft with sink and flush mount stove top. The furniture foundations are fiberglass and are glassed to the hull. The access boards in the cabin sole are unvarnished teakfaced plywood. The single 12-volt battery is located in a starboard compartment between the settee and bulkhead, and there is a six-circuit electrical panel on the outside. Wiring is run through a molding behind the settees. The aft cabin sleeps two and has two windows in the transom, one vent and one lighting fixture. Kids will love it.

One difficulty monohull sailors have making the mental switch to multihulls is the comparative lightness or flimsiness of furnishings—no heavy teak cabinetry, no ash ceilings, in fact, not much wood at all unless it’s veneer. Rather, it is customary to find extensive use of fabrics on the overhead and hull liners, and that is the case in the F-27. The attractiveness of such an interior depends largely on choice of fabrics (color, pattern, texture), and Corsair has done a decent job of it. Fiberglass molding edges are covered with a vinyl molding, which looks rather cheap but does the job. Again, saving weight is paramount.

The F-27 is definitely not a liveaboard boat, but is highly functional for short cruises. One reader said,

“This has proven to be a very safe boat which both my wife and four-year-old son enjoy racing as well as cruising. The interior is small but is very livable for two weeks. We haven’t tried staying on the boat longer than that.”

The cockpit is small, as it should be for a boat touted as having offshore capabilities. It seats four with reasonable comfort. In good weather, crew can sit forward on the cabin trunk or on the netting between the main hull and amas. Moving about requires some care as the footing changes between the rigid structures and netting, and because all sail controls are led aft to the cockpit, there are winches, lines and linestoppers to trip on.

The nonskid is molded in and effective, though it looks hard to clean; we were not surprised to hear from readers confirming our suspicion.

Handling the tiller is easy, whether sitting athwartships or resting your back against the aft cabin bulkhead. Spray is deflected quite well by the tremendous flare in the topsides of the main hull. The lifeline stanchions give some security when seated, but are too low to do any good standing.

The rudder kicks up and lowers easily with dual control lines, as does the centerboard. Again, both can be managed from the cockpit.

The outboard motor sits in a well on the port quarter, and lifts by means of a block and tackle arrangement to clear the prop for sailing. Eliminating this source of drag under sail is a great bonus of small boats.

The F-27 is, in our opinion, an exceptional boat that offers decent accommodations and unparalleled performance for the standard price of $43,800 new. Options to consider are the toilet, solar panel, cabin table, sails, outboard (8-hp recommended), trailer, electronics and spinnaker.

CORSAIR F-27: A Fast Folding Trimaran

' src=

First introduced in 1985, this trailerable trimaran quickly became a seminal boat in the world of multihull sailing. Designed by Ian Farrier, a Kiwi who emigrated to California (by way of Australia) with the specific goal of perfecting his concept of a production-built trimaran with folding amas, the F-27 is both an excellent high-performance coastal cruiser and a competitive one-design racing machine. During a 12-year production run that ended in 1997, a total of 453 hulls were launched, making this by far the most successful boat of its type to date. Arguably, the boat is still in production, as Corsair’s successor design, the F-28, though it has a rotating wing mast and is generally more sophisticated, is quite similar and is built with much of the same tooling.

The F-27 is certainly not a boat for anyone interested in roomy accommodations. Though the body of the main hull flares out a great deal above the waterline to maximize interior space, the layout and furnishings are cramped and strictly minimal. There is only sitting headroom, except under the pop-top roof near the companionway where the simple galley is located. Berthing is limited: in the tiny aft cabin there is a narrow double berth, there are two narrow settee berths in the saloon (separated by a small removable table), plus there’s a tiny berth suitable for a small child in the forepeak.

Even a couple sailing alone on this boat will want to spend much of their time, weather permitting, hanging out in the cockpit or on the wide nets between the amas and the hull. As such, the F-27 serves best as a weekend cruiser with perhaps occasional stints aboard as long as a week or two. Though several of these boats have made ocean passages, they are not really suitable for long-range bluewater cruising unless you are something of a masochist.

Nicely finished saloon on a F-27

A less nicely finished saloon, but with the berths all filled in

The forepeak. The small single berth forward is rarely used as such, due to the close proximity of the toilet

The best way to expand living space aboard is to add a cockpit tent

What the F-27 lacks in amenities and comfort it makes up for in cruising range. Because it can be trailered, the boat can get to all sorts of places–inland lakes and distant shorelines, for example–that would otherwise be out of reach. And because it is so fast, it can cover a lot more ground than most boats once it is in the water. In a little speedster like this you can potentially travel over 100 miles during a long daysail. If you don’t really care about sailing fast and aren’t interested in taking advantage of this sort of capability, this is definitely not the boat for you. But if you want to both cruise and race, you should give the F-27 a hard look. Many people cruise these boats, and there is a very active one-design class.

Folded up and packed to travel on a trailer. You can easily expand your cruising range by simply hauling the boat to a new body of water

As originally conceived the F-27 carries no bowsprit and flies a conventional triangular (or “pinhead”) mainsail hoisted on a fixed aluminum mast. In 1996 a “formula” version of the boat was introduced with both a square-headed main that carries a lot more roach and a fixed bowsprit for flying a big screecher or asymmetric spinnaker. Many of the earlier boats have since been updated with formula rigs, as they are both faster and easier to manage.

On the whole, the boat is not hard to sail shorthanded. The self-draining cockpit is quite small with the mainsheet within immediate reach of the tiller, which extends from the transom over the top of the short aft coachroof and under the raised main traveler. Other controls, likewise, are right nearby. If anything, unless you can convince idlers to stay clear of the cockpit, the boat is harder to sail with a big crew.

There is a large central daggerboard to hold the boat to weather and unlike many multihulls the F-27 is rather closewinded and makes excellent progress to windward in light air. I once spent a delightful hour beating up a very narrow channel in an F-27 in a mere whisper of breeze and had no trouble maintaining apparent wind angles of 40 degrees. In a moderate breeze the boat points as high as 35 degrees apparent and chugs along at 8 knots no problem. With the wind on the beam, if you press hard with a spinnaker up, you can get up to 20 knots, which is a thrill and a half in a vessel this size.

If there are kids aboard and you don’t want to terrify them, just douse the headsail and the boat still sails well under main alone. Or stash them all in the aft cabin where you can keep an eye on them while steering and let it rip anyway.

A formula-rigged F-27 sailing to windward

Here’s one way to carry a tender while cruising on an F-27

The F-27’s construction is structurally impeccable and thoroughly modern. The S-glass laminate is set in epoxy resin with a PVC foam core to reduce weight and increase stiffness. Kevlar and carbon fiber are used to reinforce high-load areas, and all components are vacuum-bagged when laid up so as to minimize voids and achieve uniform resin saturation. The patented folding ama arms are well engineered, with few if any reports of failures or problems. The amas can be folded up while motoring through the water, which is a great convenience when pulling into a marina berth. When launching the boat from a trailer it takes about 30 minutes for an experienced owner to step the mast and set up the rig without assistance. Because they are so well built these boats are not cheap given their size, but if you factor in the savings realized from being able to store the boat on a trailer, they are in fact quite affordable over the long run.

Systems are primitive and therefore are easy and inexpensive to maintain. Auxiliary power consists of an 8 or 9 hp outboard engine hanging in an offset engine well at the stern. The stove is usually a simple two-burner non-pressurized alcohol rig; the ice box (never mind any kind of refrigeration) is a loose cooler dragged aboard and stowed in a convenient nook or cranny. The boat has a 12-volt electrical system powering a few lights and instruments and probably requires some extracurricular charging from a solar panel or two if used very much. The toilet is often nothing more than a porta-potty stashed under the forward berth. To those who value comfort and convenience all this no doubt sounds unpleasant, but to those who enjoy sailing fast and cherish simplicity it should seem like heaven afloat.

Should I Buy an F27 Trimaran?

Telemark Sailor

I am going to buy a sailboat next summer for cruising quick overnights/weekends & daysailing in Long Island Sound. I am currently enthralled with getting a Corsair F27 trimaran. http://www.multihull-maven.com/Boats/Corsair_F-27 The ability to get across the sound in a half day is particularly appealing (as well as the fun of going fast- I am a former Hobie 16 sailor). I can see no downside to a tri besides the potential to capsize vs a keelboat, which I feel comfortable I can avoid. I'm fine with a shorter/smaller cabin. Any downsides I might be missing?

The surface state of the sound will determine how much of that speed capability you can actually use. That is a very powerfully canvased boat, and a wet ride, especially in big chop. They are huge fun to sail, and Ian Farrier's folding ama design is genius. It is a great trailer sailor, but pretty spartan by my standards.

Love Them A friend down here in florida has one that he seems to still use for weekend over nighters and not a younger guy and retired and 60 which enjoys very much and hope to go sailing on it soon. i also had hobie 16 up when in NY and saw many times those trimaran's going from Ct. to Block Island. I am sure you can add things for over over nighters and weekends,we are retired here our 60 ish and enjoy our comforts when cruising here 2 or 3 weeks at a time. Nick

Would you keep it in the water? My main worry would be how hard/ how long it would take to rig one of these if you are going to trailer sail it. I used to have a Mac 26, and it almost always took me an hour to get it fully ready to go. A lot of people say it should be a lot faster than 1 hour, but that's about what it always took to go from ready for the highway to ready for the water. These trimarans look a decent bit more complicated. They also look like a lot of fun.

Caboteur

It all depends on what you're looking for... I rented an F27 once to go from LA to Catalina. Fast and furious, I was with a teen-aged daughter; we loved the boat and the trip. You can overnight in spartan comfort: the boat will remain fast and fun and wet, no matter what. You won't be buying comfort no matter what you do to make it more sedate! Reefing for comfort would be a sin on this boat. I owned a Tornado for about fifteen years, when I gave it away I (we) wanted comfort; if you are younger and do not want to go the long-term cruising route this might be the perfect boat. Good luck & have fun. Pierre

I met a very nice fellow last summer that crossed the atlantic in his f31 with his wife, he took me out for a ride with the boat and the speed impressed me , very fast boat

It is a very light boat and doesn't need much sail once the wind builds. The boat accelerates much more quickly than a mono, or even your average cruise cat so you need to be keenly aware of sails and trim.

Johnb

That boat is one heck of a performer. Multi hulls are not supposed to go well up wind but with a friend sailing close hauled in the Oakland Estuary we were dusting mono hulls that were motoring. The accommodations are also surprisingly good for what it is. The ability to trailer and it's skinny water capability are a massive attraction. Just be warned though, some time back on the bay one was capsized when the downwind amah was hit by a large wake and submarined, it is nowhere near as forgiving as a big ole monohull and proper caution is needed. For what it is good for it is a great boat.

Tom J

This sounds like the boat for you. The beauty of having a cabin is that guests (or the Admiral) can seek shelter if they don't want to get wet. Heeling on a mono is usually what upsets most newbies to sailing, so at least that isn't as much of an issue on the tri. It's probably the speed that will concern most guests. My friend's wife was scared ****less on our buddy"s F-24, but my wife loved it. But then, my wife likes to drive motorcycles, fast. Just be picky about who goes with you, but get out there and have fun.

A great go fast cruiser The only caution is that you have to load it light to keep it fast. It's surprising how much you will want to load for just an overnight! On the other hand, this is a great cruiser for inland archipelagos. The Thousand Islands are not far away. Short fetches between the islands keep the waves down. And there are hundreds of places to anchor - all kinds of destinations. I met a couple cruising the North Channel of Lake Huron for a couple of weeks in one.

Joe said: Yes, don't wait till summer.... get it asap so you can have it ready for summer... Those Corsairs are very cool sailboats... you'll be the envy of every sailor on the sound when you whiz past them with the windward ama skimming over the wavelets. Click to expand

Welcome to the land of sheer silent whiteness. Its vast expanses are filled with fresh Arctic air, howling winds, and the spirit of true adventure. Come with us to the lands of the ancient Khanty and Mansi tribes that survived in this harsh climate of the Nether-Polar Urals . See the mountains that defy any logical or geological reason for their existence. Experience the wonders of this sparsely populated land where you can hardly see a human trace. Welcome to Yugra!

Flora & Fauna

Water resources, landmarks and tourism, major mountains, mount narodnaya, mount zaschita, mount neroyka, the pyramid mountain, samarovskaya mountain, ski and sports facilities, protected sites, reserves, national and natural parks, rivers and lakes, major cities, khanty-mansiysk.

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – Yugra (KhMAO) is located in the central part of the West Siberian Plain, stretching from west to east from the Ural Range to the Ob-Yenisei Watershed. The vast areas of this plain, as well as the Lower Priob region, are considered one of the most recently inhabited areas.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area (KhMAO) was established in 1930. Its name comes from two main northern indigenous peoples – the Khanty and the Mansi. From 1944 it was legally part of the Tyumen Region , but in 1993 the Area received autonomy and became a full-fledged territorial entity of the Russian Federation. It is a part of the Urals Federal District. The administrative centre is the city of Khanty-Mansiysk , whereas the largest city is Surgut. The word Yugra was introduced to the name of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area in 2003 to pay tribute to the old name used by the locals to call the territories lying beyond the North Urals.

The KhMAO borders the Komi Republic in the north-west, the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District in the north, the Krasnoyarsk Area and the Tomsk Region in the east and south-east, the Tyumen Region in the south and the Sverdlovsk Region in the south-west.

The area of the territory is 534,801 sq.km, the length from north to south is 800 km, from west to east is 1400 km. The population of this huge territory is 1,674,676 people as of 2020, which is the same amount as people living in Barcelona or Munich.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The main part of the territory is a huge, poorly dissected plain where absolute elevation marks rarely exceed 200 meters above sea level. The western part of the KhMAO territory is characterized by low and middle mountainous terrains with some Alpine relief featured in the Subpolar Urals. Here are ridges and spurs of the mountain system of the North Urals and the Subpolar Urals. The maximum absolute elevations are on the border with the Komi Republic . Mount Narodnaya (1,895m) is the highest peak.

More than 800 species of higher plants grow in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area . Almost the entire territory is covered by taiga forests that occupy about 52% of the area. Spruce, fir, pine, cedar, larch, birch, alder grow here. In the northern parts of the area, the composition of the vegetation is greatly influenced by perennial permafrost. Light lichen grasslands which are used as deer pastures are widespread there. Tundra dominates in the mountainous and hilly areas. River floodplains and lowlands are characterized by meadow vegetation, the so-called water meadows. High floodplains of large rivers are mainly covered with woods that mainly feature willows, birches and aspens. Forests and swamps are rich in berries and various valuable plants, most of which are used in traditional indigenous medicine.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area

The animal world is typical for the Russian taiga zone. There are 369 species of vertebrates. Mammals are represented by 60 species (28 of them are commercial species). The most common and valuable of them are wild reindeer, elk, fox, sable, fox, squirrel, marten, ermine, Siberian weasel, polecat, mink, weasel, otter, hare and others. Wolverine and West Siberian river beaver are included in the Red Book of Russia.

There are 256 bird species in the region, including 206 sedentary and nesting species. Some rare bird species are listed in the Red Book. There are 42 species of fish in rivers and lakes. Of these, 19 species are commercial, among them are starlet sturgeon, lelema, muksun (whitefish), pelyad, chir, lake herring, wader, tugun, freshwater cod, pike, ide, roach, bream, fir, perch, ruff, golden and silver crucian carp, carp (carp is grown in the cooling ponds of the Surgutskaya and Nizhnevartovskaya hydroelectric plants). Sturgeon is listed in the Red Book. There is an abundance of mosquitoes and gnats in the area, the greatest activity of which is in the second half of summer.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Reindeer

Yugra can boast of over 2 thousand large and small rivers, the total length of which is 172,000 km. The main rivers are the Ob (3,650 km), the Irtysh (3,580 km). These are some of the largest rivers in Russia. Other significant rivers include the tributaries of the Ob (the Vakh, Agan, Tromyogan, Bolshoy Yugan, Lyamin, Pim, Bolshoy Salym, Nazym, Severnaya Sosva, Kazym rivers), the tributary of the Irtysh (the Konda River) and the Sogom River. Ten rivers are over 500 km long. All the Yugra rivers with the exception of the rivers in the Ural part of the region are characterized by rather slow currents, gentle slopes, some surge wave phenomena, spring and summer floods. The Ob River basin extends over a distance of 700-200 km from the mouths of its tributaries. Such abundance of water facilitates the appearance of floodplain swamps and seasonal lakes.

The region's swamps are predominantly of the upper and transitional type. Those water basins occupy about a third of the region. About 290,000 lakes with the area of more than 1 ha are surrounded by swamps and forests. The largest lakes are Tursuntsky Tuman, Levushinsky Tuman, Vandemtor and Trmemtor. The deepest lakes are Kintus (48 m) and Syrky Sor (42 m). However, most of the lakes (about 90%) are modest and quite small and have no surface runoff.

The area is rich in resources of fresh, mineral and thermal underground waters, which are still insignificantly used.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. River

The climate is moderately continental. Winters are harsh, snowy and long, and summers are short and relatively warm. The territory is protected from the west by the Ural Mountains but its openness from the north has a significant impact on the climate formation because cold air masses from the Arctic freely penetrate the area. The flat character of the terrain with a large number of rivers, lakes and swamps also has its impact. Most of the precipitation falls during the warm seasons. But even with a small amount of precipitation, their evaporation is very low, which as a result contributes to the formation of the zone of excessive moisture throughout the Yugra. The snow cover is stable from late October to early May, its height varies from 50 to 80 cm. The region is characterized by a rapid change of weather conditions, especially in transitional seasons (autumn and spring), as well as during the day. Late spring and early autumn frosts are rather frequent and can happen even until mid-June. Average January temperatures range from -18ºC to -24ºC (0 F to -11 F) and can reach -60ºC to -62ºC (-76 F to -80 F) when the northern cold air masses break through. The average temperature in July, the warmest month of the year, ranges from +15ºC to +20ºC (+59 F to +68 F) and on very rare days can reach a maximum temperature of +36ºC (+97 F). The prevailing wind direction is north in summer and south in winter.

The weather in the mountains is quite changeable and cool even in summer. The best time to visit the region's mountains is between July and mid-August.

The Yugra of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area has a huge natural resource potential. These are oil and gas deposits, forests, gold and iron ore deposits, as well as bauxites, copper, zinc, lead, niobium, tantalum, brown and hard coal deposits, rock crystal, quartz and piezo quartz, peat deposits, etc. The region has plenty of natural resources. In terms of natural gas reserves, the Yugra ranks second in the Russian Federation after the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District .

The industry is dominated by oil and gas production, power generation and processing industries, including woodworking except for pulp and paper production.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Pump-rocking

The Khanty-Mansi area has very developed tourism of all kinds. There is a modern infrastructure for cultural exploration as well as for active recreation.

Fans of sports and eco-friendly tourism will be able to conquer majestic mountains and raft down picturesque rivers, enjoy the beauty of nature in nature reserves and natural parks. The hills and mountains of this area open up endless opportunities for skiing and snowboarding.

The mountainous part of the Subpolar Urals located on the territory of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area is very beautiful. The highest peaks of the Ural Mountains are situated here.

Being the highest point of the whole Urals, Mount Narodnaya (1,895 m), also known as Naroda and Poenurr and translated as People's Mountain is territorially situated in the Subpolar Urals, on the border of the Yugra Area and the Komi Republic . It is the highest point in European Russia outside the Caucasus. This leads to its large topographic prominence of 1,772 metres (5,814 ft).

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Narodnaya

The top of the mountain is half a kilometre from the border towards Yugra. As for the name of the mountain, scientists could not come to a common opinion for a long time, so there are two versions. According to one version, in the Soviet years, an expedition of pioneers gave the mountain a name in honour of the Soviet people - Narodnaya (the stress is on the second syllable). According to the other version, even before the arrival of the first Soviet tourists, the peak was named after the River Naroda (the stress is on the first syllable) flowing at the foot of the mountain. The Nenets peoples called the River Naroda Naro, which means a thicket or a dense forest, and the Mansi peoples called it Poengurr or Poen-urr, which translates as the top, or head. The maps used to refer to it as Mount Naroda or Mount Naroda-Iz. Nowadays, it appears everywhere as Narodnaya.

In the 1980s, someone set a bust of Lenin on the top of the mountain. Its remains can be found there to this day. There is one more symbolic relic there – some Orthodox believers erected a worship cross on top of Mount Narodnaya after a Procession of the Cross.

The slopes of the mountain are steeper in the north-east and south-west and there are many steep rocks on them. The south-eastern and northern parts of the mountain are more gentle but they are also covered with scree. Be vigilant and careful when climbing! On the slopes of the mountain, there are many not only boulders but also caverns filled with clear water as well as ice. There are glaciers and snowfields. From the north-eastern part of the mountain, you can observe Lake Blue near which tourists and travellers like to make bivouacs.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Narodnaya

Mesmerizing with its beauty and inaccessibility, it attracts many tourists and fans of active recreation. This majestic mountain is quite remote from the settlements, so getting to it is not an easy task. The mountain is located in the Yugyd Va National Park , so it is necessary to register in advance and get a visit permit from the park administration. How to get to the park administration and get a permit, read the article on the Yugyd Va National Park .

Mountain Zaschita (1,808 m) is the second-highest peak in the Ural Mountains, after Mount Narodnaya . Mysteriously, the name of the mountain, which roughly translates as Defense or Protection Mount, does not correlate in any way with the Mansi names of the nearby mountains and rivers. The origin of the name is unknown. There are some speculations but we will consider just one of them. On the map of the Northern Urals which was made by the Hungarian researcher Reguli the closest peak to Mount Narodnaya was called gnetying olu. Its location coincides with that of the present-day Mount Zaschita . The name gnetying olu in the Mansi can be deciphered as a mountain on which there is some help from ice. The mountain is believed to protect deer grazing on glaciers from mosquitoes. So, early topographers called the mountain more briefly – Mount Defense. Indeed, the slopes of this mountain are covered with a lot of snow and glaciers (the Yugra, Naroda, Kosyu, Hobyu glaciers and others). And it is here that the Mansi shepherds bring their deer which can rest on glaciers and snow. Summarizing all the above, we can say that Zaschita Mount is to some extent protection for deer from mosquitoes. The very name Zaschita appeared on maps with the beginning of hiking tours in the Subpolar Urals.

Mount Neroyka (1,645 m) is 100 km from Neroyka village, the closest tourist base to this peak. In the 1950s, people who were engaged in quartz mining near the mountain worked and lived in this base. Later, a gravel road was built from the village of Saranpaul to the mountain for large-scale development of the quartz deposit. In recent years, the road has not been much used and is practically not cleaned from snow in winter. There has been a plant built 20 km down from the mountain for primary processing of quartz with the use of nanotechnologies. There is an annual big camping event near the mountain. It is organized by the Tourism Department of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area. You can have a 1-hour helicopter ride to the mountain from the village of Saranpaul. Should you wish to fly from the city of Khanty-Mansiysk , be prepared to fly over the taiga for 2.5-3 hours.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Mount Neroyka

Quite inquisitive tourists happened to discover, by a lucky chance, a Pyramid similar to that of Cheops but four times bigger. It is located on the territory of the Narodo-Ityinsky Ridge. The closest to the pyramid is the village of Saranpaul. The sizes of the found pyramid are as follows: the height is 774 m, in comparison to the Egyptian pyramid which is 147 m; the length of a lateral edge is 230 m whereas the Egyptian pyramid is 1 km. The pyramid is located precisely according to the cardinal directions, there is not a single degree deviation at that. The origin of the pyramid is unknown, scientists are still making assumptions. No traces of human activity were found near the pyramid. The only way to get here at this time is by helicopter.

Samarovskaya Mountain is another wonder that is baffling many people. It is dividing the city of Khanty-Mansiysk into northern and southern parts. Few now living residents know that in the old days the highest part of the modern city used to bear a plural name of the Samarovsky Mountains among which there were Mount Palenina, Komissarskaya, Miroslavskaya, Filinova, and Romanova. Originally, there was a village called Samarovo amidst these mountains. Until now, many issues bewilder both residents and scientists. How could a mountain form in the middle of the West Siberian Plain? What is inside it? Won't the weight of the buildings erected on the top of the mountain affect its height? The uniqueness of Samarovskaya Mountain is that it consists of numerous large stones, boulders, rocks that are absolutely foreign to this area. Scientists have not yet come to a consensus on the mountain’s origin.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area.

The Yugra is very famous for its ski resorts, the main of which are:

  • The Cedar Ravine ski resort (Surgut city, Naberezhny Ave. 39/1)
  • Three Mountains (Trekhgorie) ski resort (30 km from Nizhnevartovsk, Ermakovsky settlement)
  • Stone Cape (Kamenniy Mys) ski resort (near the city of Surgut)
  • Pine Urman ski resort ( Khanty-Mansiysk , Sportivnaya Str., 24)

The far-away lands of the Yugra are the blessed sanctuaries for many animals as the area is rather hostile to a human There are reserves, natural parks, wildlife sanctuaries here that aim to protect the national treasures of the lands. Having visited these regions once, you would crave for coming back again and again to feel that unique sense of unity with nature, to forget about the urban fuss and and hustles whatsoever. The harsh but beautiful nature of this extraordinary area leaves an indelible trace in the soul of every person.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Samarovsky outlier. Archeopark

On the territory of the district there are 25 specially protected natural areas, the most famous of them are:

  • The reserves are two: the Malaya Sosva Reserve and the Yugan Reserve, the latter was established in 1982 as the largest reserve of taiga landscapes. The purpose of the reserves was to study unobtrusively and carefully preserve the endemic flora and fauna without disturbing natural processes. Hunting and economic activities are prohibited here, which is important for the preservation of natural ecosystems.
  • The natural parks are the Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park, the Siberian Sloping Hills (Uvaly), the Numto (also called Lake Numto), and the Kondinskie Lakes.

These reserves and natural parks offer tourists their own excursion programs to make visiting their territory much more enjoyable and educational.

The Samarovsky Chugas Nature Park is located in the center of Khanty-Mansiysk , on a small hill between the Ob and Irtysh rivers.

The territory of the Siberian Sloping Hills (Uvaly) natural park is 350 km away from the city of Khanty-Mansiysk . You can get there by helicopter or by plane. The office of the park is located at 7a Pionerskaya Street, Nizhnevartovsk.

The Kondinskie Lakes Natural Park is located 380 km from Khanty-Mansiysk . Half of the park is covered with swamps, but there is also a recreational area. There you can rest, swim, do some amateur fishing, picking berries (cowberries, cranberries) and mushrooms is permitted. There is only one independent walking route here, it runs for 3 km in the deep forest. It is a cool place for kids since the park is equipped with sports grounds, a pool and a small zoo where the kids can interact with brown bear cubs. What else, try the TaiPark, it is a rope course running at the height of 2.5 meters, having 15 stages, the full length is 125 meters. There is an opportunity to order water walking tours in the town of Sovetsky, which can be reached by train from Khanty-Mansiysk .

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Kondinskie Lakes

The Numto Nature Park is located almost in the center of the West Siberian Plain, in the Beloyarsk district of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, 300 km from the city of Surgut and 200 km from the town of Beloyarsk. It is located on the border of Yugra and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. The administration of the park is located at 2, Beloyarsky micro-district, 4a. The territory of the natural park is a treasure trove of archaeological and ethnocultural monuments. As of today, there have been discovered 20 architectural monuments, including fortified and not fortified settlements, places of worship abandoned by the peoples who lived here from the Stone Age to almost the present day. Researchers have also found 65 monuments of ethnic value, the main of which are worship objects, sacred places and cemeteries.

The Malaya Sosva Reserve includes several subordinated territories and sanctuaries, including Lake Ranghe-Tour. The reserve offers a 4-km walking guided route that gets the visitors introduced to the typical features and characteristics of flora and fauna of the region. The route is called Bear Trail and you can spot bears there (don’t come close though, we’ve already written how to behave if you meet a bear in the wild). Also, you will see the River Malaya Sosva, some marshes, ancient cultural monuments and other nice sights. Permission to visit the reserve can be obtained from the administration of the reserve at Lenina Str. 46, town Sovetskiy.

As to the Yugan Nature Reserve , it is inaccessible to common hikers who are afraid of flying since there are no roads to it. The only way to get there is taking a helicopter ride. You also must obtain a permit in the administration of the reserve, go accompanied by employees of the reserve, and only on special transport of the reserve (motorboat, snowmobile). The central manor of the Reserve and the administration are located in the village of Ugut. To get to this village, you should first go to the town of Surgut, then go to the town of Pyt-Yakh, and from it there is a road to the village of Ugut. It is about 100 km from Ugut to the southern border of the reserve i, and another 25 km to the nearest cordon. The administration works from Monday to Friday. You can request a permit via mail at [email protected] , order a guided tour at [email protected]

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Yugan Nature Reserve

The Yugra lands are heaven for water sports aficionados. They can have some awesome fishing or go rafting along such rivers as: the river Naroda, the Deep Sabun, etc.

The Naroda River is 140 km long. It is the left tributary of the Manya River located in the Ob River basin. The river has its origin on the south-western slope of Mount Narodnaya . It is a mountain-taiga river with rapids, swifts, numerous rolls, which attracts interest among water tourists. However, it is usually not rafted very often.

The Deep Sabun River flows through the territory of the Siberian Sloping Hills Nature Park. The park has developed multi-day water routes. It is possible to raft along the river in summer and to go skiing along it in winter.

The Kondinskie Lakes are a system of lakes along the left bank of the Konda River. The largest lake is the Arantur, with pine forests on the northern side and sandy beaches well equipped for a nice relaxing me-time. The water heats up well in summer. The small river Okunevaya and the river Maly Akh flow into the lake. The Maly Akh comes in on the west side and connects lake Arantur with Lake Pon-Tour. This lake is the richest in fish, and there is also a parking lot for fishermen here. The streams connect Pon-Tour with small lakes Krugloe and Lopukhovoye. When you look at Lopukhovoe lake, you feel as if you have found yourself in a fabulous place: more than half of its surface is covered with white lilies, as well as yellow flowers of the water-beans. Then the river Big Akh, which flows into the river Konda, connects all the lakes into a single system. Along the river there are many archeological monuments such as forts and settlements which have paths to them. The southernmost lake of the park is Ranghe-Tour.

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area. Rivers and Lakes

Yugra is not the easiest destination and not the most accessible, but the effort is well worth it. You should first get to the capital of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – the city of Khanty-Mansiysk either by air or by train.

Khanty-Mansiysk is based on the premises of the former village Samarovo founded in 1582. It used to be the territory of the Khanty people and a pit stop for coachmen who rode their wagons across the country. The village was founded by Russian Count Samara, thus the name Samarovo. The modern city actually began to develop in 1930 because amidst the Siberian taiga there finally started to appear stone houses on the high bank of the Irtysh River. In 1940, the village was renamed into Khanty-Mansiysk by the name of the peoples living on this territory – the Khanty and the Mansi, and in 1950 it received the status of a town.

Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

The city has several attractions. Mount Samarovskaya is probably the biggest natural and scientific wonder. It divides the city in two parts and causes many concerns for urban developers who always wonder whether this mountain can move making the buildings slide or even sink in.

Another beauty is the century-old cedar grove that is within the city limits. The grove is a part of the natural park Samarovsky Chugas. The word chugas in the language of the Khanty means a lonely hill in the low river floodplain.

Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

The park is one of the main attractions of the city, it hosts an open-air ethnographic museum called the Torum Maa, a cultural and tourist complex called Archaeopark, a biathlon center. Kids and adults, nature lovers and fans of culture love this place dearly.

A memorial sign to Yugra's discoverers is installed on top of the Samarovsky Chugas. It is a tall stele pyramid divided into three portions. On the lower level, there is a restaurant, on the second level is a small museum, and on the third level there is an observation deck, 40 m above the ground, with a magnificent view of the Irtysh River and the river port. The pyramid is decorated by the bas-relief depicting the discoverers of the region, from the 16th-century Count Samara to the geologists of the 20th century.

Another trademark of Khanty-Mansiysk is the State Museum of Nature and Man. The museum hosts a gallery and a workshop of a famous artist G. Rayshev.

The city has a lot of small monuments generously spread around the city. There is the Khanty family resting on a camp, this monument is near the airport building. You can take a pic at the Golden Tambourine located at the intersection of Gagarin Street and Mira Street. Connoisseurs of culture should also visit the Sun – the Theatre of Ob-Ugrian Peoples, it is the world's first professional theatre of Khanty and Mansi peoples. And if you are travelling with kids, the Khanty-Mansiysk Puppet Theatre is a must-visit. In the period from May to October, you can take a boat ride to the confluence of two rivers – the Ob and the Irtysh. Yugra Service Co. operates such cruises, you can find more information locally at their address Tobolsk Trakt street 4, Khanty-Mansiysk .

That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

How do I increase my chances of getting a PhD studentship?

You must be able to show your suitability for a UK research degree if you wish to apply for fully-funded studentships.

This includes evidence either of a relevant and successful academic background or equivalent relevant professional/expert background in the applied subject area. Applicants from overseas will also have to fulfil any English language and visa requirements.

This will be true for studentships in the UK across most of the UK universities. It is usual for applicants either to have completed (or be about to complete) a masters degree, have an exceptional undergraduate record and references, or demonstrate the equivalent scholarly potential.

Supervisory staff and research students at the University of Brighton consider how important diverse thinking and inclusive practice are to their doctoral studies.

Can I get PhD funding at the University of Brighton?

We have a long-standing annual programme of funded PhD opportunities across all our disciplines, including several rooted in research council (UKRI) partnerships .

The initiatives allow postgraduate study for UK-based students as well as study in the UK for international students (depending on the PhD programme).

We are also keen to encourage students who might be able to self-fund their doctoral studies. Studying part-time, for example, is likely to prove more affordable and more easily balanced with professional life than you'd imagine.

We are dedicated to providing a welcoming and supportive atmosphere and structure for your studies. Show us your own qualities and your suitability for programmes as they become available and we will look forward to receiving your application.

Fully-funded EPSRC PhD studentship available in Lancaster Data Science & AI Institute: Novel geospatial methods for combining data at multiple spatial and temporal scales in the context of historical disease mapping

Home status students only

With the advent of advanced technology, a vast amount of data has become available, making the integration of information across spatial and temporal scales increasingly crucial for understanding complex systems and making informed decisions. For instance, in environmental sciences, researchers often seek to understand the impact of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity. To achieve this, data must be integrated from various spatial scales, ranging from local habitats to regional landscapes, and temporal scales, spanning decades or even centuries. Similarly, in epidemiology, the spread of infectious diseases is influenced by factors operating at different spatial and temporal scales. For example, the transmission of vector-borne diseases like malaria or dengue fever depends not only on local environmental conditions but also on global climate patterns and human mobility.

However, existing geospatial methods often fail to effectively account for the misalignment in time and/or space of data from multiple sources, with an increasing need of novel methods that are tailored to the characteristics and complexities of the data being integrated.

This research project aims to develop a novel geospatial modelling framework to address these challenges and improve the integration of data across different spatial and temporal scales in the context of historical disease mapping. This framework will then be applied to mapping, analysing, and interpreting sixteenth-century primary sources on diseases and epidemics, utilizing datasets and methods from the ESRC project Digging into Early Colonial Mexico. Epidemics, like the recent COVID-19, have had profound and enduring consequences throughout history. The application area of this project will be in the context of the introduction of diseases, like smallpox, during the Conquest of America that led to catastrophic declines in populations, with mortality rates reaching 97% in some regions. Traditional research methods struggle with the sheer volume, incompleteness, and uncertainty of historical data. In this project we will leverage advancements in machine learning, corpus linguistics, and geographic information sciences presents opportunities to explore vast historical collections and better address data variability and uncertainty. Specifically, the student will:

  • Develop geospatial methods to extract and analyse and geographic information from ambiguous and uncertain descriptions of health and disease within textual records.
  • Develop and apply spatio-methods capable that enable the identification of clusters of disease using uncertain data from historical records.

The successful applicant will be supervised by an interdisciplinary team consisting of experts from history, linguistics, statistics and geography.

Prospective candidates should have a first or upper second-class honours degree, or a combination of qualifications or experience equivalent to that level in a relevant subject.

For informal enquiries about the project please contact Duncan Whyatt ( [email protected] ), Patricia Murrieta-Flores ( [email protected] ) or Emanuele Giorgi ( [email protected] ).

To apply, please send a CV and cover letter demonstrating your motivation for the post to [email protected] . The closing date for applications is 15 th July 2024 and we anticipate a start date of October 2024 for the successful candidate.

No need to fork out US$40,000 for a PhD – here are 10 fully-funded PhD programmes

fully-funded phd

The journey to obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a long and expensive one.

From completing a diploma or A-level programme to getting a bachelor’s degree, the journey only gets more expensive as you embark on a three to seven-year journey of obtaining your PhD.

It’s why competition for a fully-funded PhD can be fierce.

On average, the total cost of a PhD programme is somewhere between US$30,000 to US$40,000 per year, depending on where you enrol. This expense does not include the cost of living if you are moving to a different city or country to study.

Multiply that with the number of years it’ll take for you to complete your studies, and you’ll see why it’s not an easy decision to make.

Still, there are always ways to pursue higher education at a more affordable cost. While student loans are an option, you might want to aim for a fully-funded PhD instead.

What is a fully-funded PhD programme?

A fully-funded programme usually means full tuition reimbursement and a stipend to help cover the cost of living while pursuing the degree.

However, requirements differ according to the university.

Some universities offer a “no-strings-attached” fellowship where they receive funding but do not owe the university anything aside from their research. In many cases, a student will need to work part-time for the university by providing teaching or administrative assistance which might be useful in their professional career.

It’s also important to take note that universities are not the only ones funding your PhD.

Some grants might come from government bodies to support national research objectives and train future professionals to carry them out. Others could come from independent charities that have similar goals or businesses that see potential benefits to achieve their targets.

Things to know before you attempt to secure a fully-funded PhD programme

Before we jump into introducing some fully-funded PhD programmes, let’s take a closer look at how PhD funding starts out.

Seek advice

Reach out to an academic advisor or supervisor for advice on the next steps to take. Chances are that they can provide suggestions or even recommendation letters. Otherwise, they can leverage on their own knowledge and networks to redirect you to a better source of information.

If an advisor isn’t available, try reaching out to the university’s graduates to get a clearer viewpoint from someone with first-hand experience.

Many PhD projects are actually advertised with generous funding, and this is particularly so for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects.

However, it doesn’t mean you won’t find funding in other subjects like education, sociology or even English.

Be sure you don’t single out universities in your search. Explore opportunities with external parties, such as business or industry partners too.

Build a funding portfolio

Getting into the PhD scene is competitive, more so when you’re looking to score a fully-funded PhD. To help secure funding, put together a portfolio to make your case as strong as possible.

Similar to a resume, your portfolio should outline what you plan to study, how long for, and above all else, why you wish to take the PhD.

This demonstrates your commitment and understanding to the subject and its industry field.

Living costs and expenses

Not all funded PhDs offer to cover your living expenses, especially if you’re an international student. But even if they do, it’s a good idea to set aside some funds for your day-to-day life.

Some fully-funded PhDs offer accommodation for up to a certain amount of years, so if you intend on staying on for a longer period of time, it may be wise to have some finances ready for living on your own.

Determine your timeframe

It’s common for PhD students to work while studying. Part-time study offers that flexibility, but it also stretches out the length of your PhD and increases your maintenance expenses.

Carefully consider your options before deciding on a part-time or full-time PhD, especially if you’re employed or have other commitments.

Don’t feel discouraged if you’re nervous about your chances of securing a fully-funded PhD. There are many other universities and programmes that readily offer generous funding and high stipends , such as MIT and Stanford University.

These stipends often cover tuition, living expenses, and healthcare, so don’t count them out.

University of birmingham - school of psychology.

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Birmingham
Funding for: UK Students
Funding amount: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 15th May 2024
Closes: 24th May 2024

About the project

We seek candidates interested in completing a PhD at the intersection of developmental and computational human neuroscience. We will support the selected candidate to apply for a fully funded 4-year PhD position with a teaching component (~1 year of full-time teaching spread across the 4 years) at the Centre for Developmental Science and Centre for Human Brain Health and, School of Psychology, University of Birmingham. The project will be supervised by Dr Barbara Pomiechowska, Dr Paul Muhle-Karbe, and Prof. Sarah Beck. The expected start date is September 2024. The project is only open to home students.

Project details

Have you ever wondered how is it possible that humans are the only species on the planet that practices medicine and science, writes books, invented social media, travelled to the moon, and more? What makes human cognition special? Classic theories have suggested that humans are special thanks to cognitive abilities such as language, tool use or theory of mind. Recent evidence suggests, however, that human singularity may be due to a human-specific special mode of thought that allows people to use discrete symbols and their combinations to mentally represent experience, in language (e.g. “I found a cat by my fridge”) and beyond (e.g. in maths, a2 + b2 = c2), and create brand new ideas. Symbolic thought allows us to easily compress and transfer information, thus supporting learning and prediction. This project will use behavioural and state-of-the-art neuroscience methods with infants and adults to explore cognitive and neural mechanisms underpinning symbolic representation and symbol manipulation. You will have the opportunity to acquire cutting edge research skills and use these to develop your own research studies. In addition to conducting research, you will be required to deliver teaching (equivalent to ~1 year full time, including e.g. tutorials, seminars). You will also be supported to get a teaching certification (PGCHE). Apply to work in a friendly and exciting research environment.

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree (high 2.1 minimum, or equivalent). A Master’s in Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science or a related discipline (merit minimum, or equivalent) is desirable. Experience in conducting experiments and analyses is desirable. Experience with working with infants is not required, as training will be provided. The successful candidate will need to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. The deadline to submit the stage 1 application form is Friday 24th May, 5 pm BST. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed between 29th-31st May 2024. The selected candidate will be supported to submit a full application by the 7th June 2024.

Applicants should fill in the stage 1 application form: https://forms.gle/Sfce1m2q2J8fYwM77 and submit a 2-page (max) CV by Friday, 24th of May, 6 pm BST. Informal enquiries can be addressed to Dr Barbara Pomiechowska ( [email protected] ) and Dr Paul Muhle-Karbe ( [email protected] ).

08 fully funded phd programs at newcastle university, england.

Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Newcastle University, England invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum digital signatures and quantum formal methods

Summary of phd program:.

This PhD will involve in developing novel quantum digital signature protocols, and verifying the security of the protocols using a branch in computer science known as formal methods. The success of formal methods in classical computing – they are ubiquitous e.g. in software development – led to the development of quantum formal methods, which helps to describe and analyse systems that combine quantum and classical elements. Previous research in quantum formal techniques focused on analysing realistic quantum information processing systems, to gain an understanding of concurrent and communicating quantum systems, and importantly to support the future development of tools for verifying the correctness of more complex quantum technologies.

Application Deadline: 23 July 2024

2. fully funded phd position in incentivizing participation in privacy-enhancing technologies.

Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Secure Multi-party Computation (MPC) and Federated Learning (FL) allow parties to collaboratively analyze a collection of data partitions where each data partition is contributed by a different party (such as banks, or law enforcement agencies). Two facts about most PETs exist: (i) the output of PETs reveals some information about the parties’ private input sets (i.e., the computation result in FL or MPC), and (ii) various variants of PETs do not output the result to all parties, even in those PETs that do, not all of the parties are necessarily interested in it. Given these facts, a natural question arises: How can we incentivize parties that do not receive the result or do not express interest in it to participate in PETs?

Psoriasis vulgaris is a systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disease affecting 2–3% of the world population. It manifests itself as red scaly plaques distributed over the whole skin, causing significant disability and impairment to quality of life. The pathophysiology of psoriasis is complex, multi-factorial and thought to be triggered through environmental genetic interactions. For example, psoriasis can be triggered in response to innate or environmental stimuli (e.g., injury, infection, or certain behavioural patterns).

Aligned programme of study:  PhD in Medical and Health Care Studies (Biomedicine)

Mode of study:   Full-time

Project description:

Effective communication is an integral part of standard health care but the importance of using the patient's first language as part of their care has not been strongly established (Irvine et al.2006). Language choice is even more important for specific groups of vulnerable patients such as children or the elderly, who have not learned/lost bilingual skills, as well as people who suffer from mental health illnesses (Martin et al. 2018). Defects due to language barriers can lead to a communication gap between patients and clinicians which then has negative effects on patient safety and outcomes including medical errors, readmissions to hospital, lower numbers of outpatients, lack of use of preventive services, lack of compliance with medication, and lack of effective management of chronic conditions (Bowen 2015; van Rose et al. 2015).

There is literature suggesting that a lack of care in a patient's mother tongue is associated with the severity of particular eye conditions at the time of diagnosis. More specifically, in the USA, non-English speaking glaucoma patients have worse results in their initial visual field test (Visual Field (VF) test) compared to English speakers (Altangerel et al.2009; Halawa et al.2022). But these studies did not see a link between the severity of disease progression and language. However, a lack of linguistic concordance between a patient and their doctor contributes to non-compliance with a treatment plan (Moissac & Bowen, 2019). Furthermore, there is an increased likelihood of developing glaucoma in patients with the chronic illness Diabetes (Zhao et al.2015), where a lack of English proficiency has been shown to contribute to poor diabetes management among the Latino population in the USA (Fernandez et al.2010). Thus, it is possible that a lack of language concordance could contribute to increased severity of chronic eye conditions.

Although there is evidence of a link between the language of care and the severity of some chronic conditions, there is a lack of evidence in the field of optometry and as a result many opticians are either unaware or doubtful of the possible negative impact of a lack of care in the patient’s mother tongue. In 2023 a questionnaire was provided to optical practices in Wales, asking about their experiences of linguistic barriers in optical care and their opinion on the Welsh 'active offer'. The responses included comments that convey that some see a need for bilingual care in Wales (Figure 1). But also, comments suggested that some opticians in Wales are not aware of the possible impact of a lack of care in the patient's mother tongue and are not likely to agree with the Welsh government's 'More Than Words' plan and strategy, which describes the intention to increase the number of bilingual health carers (Figure 1). We see from these comments that there is a need for direct evidence of the impact of a lack of care in the Welsh language on Welsh patients in the field of optometry. Therefore, for this project we intend to investigate the impact of care in Welsh language on chronic eye conditions.

How to Cite a Thesis or Dissertation in APA

In this citation guide, you will learn how to reference and cite an undergraduate thesis, master’s thesis, or doctoral dissertation. This guide will also review the differences between a thesis or dissertation that is published and one that has remained unpublished. The guidelines below come from the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020a), pages 333 and 334. Please note that the association is not affiliated with this guide.

Alternatively, you can visit EasyBib.com for helpful citation tools to cite your thesis or dissertation .

Guide Overview

Citing an unpublished thesis or dissertation, citing a published dissertation or thesis from a database, citing a thesis or dissertation published online but not from a database, citing a thesis or dissertation: reference overview, what you need.

Since unpublished theses can usually only be sourced in print form from a university library, the correct citation structure includes the university name where the publisher element usually goes.

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year published). Title in sentence case [Unpublished degree type thesis or dissertation]. Name of institution.

Ames, J. H., & Doughty, L. H. (1911). The proposed plans for the Iowa State College athletic field including the design of a reinforced concrete grandstand and wall [Unpublished bachelor’s thesis]. Iowa State University.

In-text citation example:

  • Parenthetical :  (Ames & Doughty, 1911)
  • Narrative :  Ames & Doughty (1911)

If a thesis or dissertation has been published and is found on a database, then follow the structure below. It’s similar to the format for an unpublished dissertation/thesis, but with a few differences:

  • The institution is presented in brackets after the title
  • The archive or database name is included

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year published). Title in sentence case (Publication or Document No.) [Degree type thesis or dissertation, Name of institution]. Database name.

Examples 1:

Knight, K. A. (2011). Media epidemics: Viral structures in literature and new media (Accession No. 2013420395) [Doctoral dissertation, University of California, Santa Barbara]. ProQuest Dissertations Publishing.

Example dissertation-thesis

Trotman, J.B. (2018). New insights into the biochemistry and cell biology of RNA recapping (Document No. osu1523896565730483) [Doctoral dissertation, Ohio State University]. OhioLINK Electronic Theses & Dissertations Center.

In the example given above, the dissertation is presented with a Document Number (Document No.). Sometimes called a database number or publication number, this is the identifier that is used by the database’s indexing system. If the database you are using provides you with such a number, then include it directly after the work’s title in parentheses.

If you are interested in learning more about how to handle works that were accessed via academic research databases, see Section 9.3 of the Publication Manual.

In-text citation examples :

  • Parenthetical citation : (Trotman, 2018)
  • Narrative citation : Trotman (2018)

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year Published). Title in sentence case [Degree type thesis or dissertation, Name of institution]. Name of archive or collection. URL

It is important to note that not every thesis or dissertation published online will be associated with a specific archive or collection. If the work is published on a private website, provide only the URL as the source element.

In-text citation examples:

  • Parenthetical citation : (Kim, 2019)
  • Narrative citation : Kim (2019)
  • Parenthetical citation : (Stiles, 2001)
  • Narrative citation : Stiles (2001)

dissertation and thesis Citations for APA 7

We hope that the information provided here will serve as an effective guide for your research. If you’re looking for even more citation info, visit EasyBib.com for a comprehensive collection of educational materials covering multiple source types.

If you’re citing a variety of different sources, consider taking the EasyBib citation generator for a spin. It can help you cite easily and offers citation forms for several different kinds of sources.

To start things off, let’s take a look at the different types of literature that are classified under Chapter 10.6 of the Publication Manual :

  • Undergraduate thesis
  • Master’s thesis
  • Doctoral dissertation

You will need to know which type you are citing. You’ll also need to know if it is published or unpublished .

When you decide to cite a dissertation or thesis, you’ll need to look for the following information to use in your citation:

  • Author’s last name, and first and middle initials
  • Year published
  • Title of thesis or dissertation
  • If it is unpublished
  • Publication or document number (if applicable; for published work)
  • Degree type (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral)
  • Thesis or dissertation
  • Name of institution awarding degree
  • DOI (https://doi.org/xxxxx) or URL (if applicable)

Since theses and dissertations are directly linked to educational degrees, it is necessary to list the name of the associated institution; i.e., the college, university, or school that is awarding the associated degree.

To get an idea of the proper form, take a look at the examples below. There are three outlined scenarios:

  • Unpublished thesis or dissertation
  • Published thesis or dissertation from a database
  • Thesis or dissertation published online but not from a database

Dissertations & Theses

Dissertations and theses are formatted the same way in APA 7th edition. Theses are generally the culminating work for a master's or undergraduate degree and dissertations are often original research completed by doctoral students. Here are examples of a dissertation & a thesis, and how they would be formatted:

Examples:

Introduction

When creating references for dissertations, theses, and projects, you will need to determine the correct reference type to follow. Dissertations, theses, and projects are generally divided into two separate groups; those that are published and those that are unpublished.

In most cases, unpublished projects are those that are in print and available only from the degree-granting institution. On the other hand, published projects are those that are available in a database, a university archive, or a personal website.

Variations - URLs?

Some URLs may be long and complicated. APA 7th edition allows the use of shorter URLs. Shortened URLs can be created using any URL shortener service; however, if you choose to shorten the URL, you must double-check that the URL is functioning and brings the reader to the correct website.

Common URL Shortner websites include:

More Information

For more information about URLs, see Section 9.36 on page 300 of APA Manual, 7th edition.

NOTE:  Check your instructor's preference about using short URLs. Some instructors may want the full URL.

Variations - DOIs?

Some DOIs may be long and complicated. APA 7th edition allows the use of shorter DOI numbers. Shortened DOIs can be located at the International DOI Foundations, shortDOI Service .

More Information:

For more information about DOIs, see Section 9.36 on page 300 of APA Manual, 7th edition.

NOTE: Check your instructor's preference for using short DOIs. Some instructors may want the full DOI.

Variations - Live Hyperlinks?

Should my urls be live.

It depends. When adding URLs to a paper or other work, first, be sure to include the full hyperlink. This includes the http:// or the https://. Additionally, consider where and how the paper or work will be published or read. If the work will only be read in print or as a Word doc or Google Doc, then the URLs should not be live (i.e., they are not blue or underlined). However, if the work will be published or read online, then APA advises to include live URLs. This would allow the reader to click on a link and go to the source.

For more information, see Section 9.35 on pages 299-300 of the APA Manual, 7th edition.

NOTE: Check your instructor's preference about using live URLs. Some instructors may not want you to use live URLs.

Use the language described by the degree-granting institution to describe the project. Then, add a comma and the name of the institution. Add a period after the brackets.

Thesis and dissertation can mean different things, depending on which institution the work is from.  For study purposes and for your APA reference you need to know the level of the work.

  • Always check the title page, or subsequent pages, to determine exactly what the work is
  • Use the information there for your APA reference

At Auckland University of Technology (and other NZ universities)

Thesis is either for a doctoral or a master's degree.

Dissertation is either for a master's or a bachelor's degree with honours.

Exegesis is the written component of a practice-based thesis where the major output is a creative work;  e.g. a film, artwork, novel.

In some other parts of the world such as North America, a dissertation may be for a doctoral degree and a thesis for a master's degree.

Note:  This page reflects the latest version of the APA Publication Manual (i.e., APA 7), which released in October 2019. The equivalent resource for the older APA 6 style  can be found here .

Important Note: Because the 7 th edition of the APA Publication Manual heavily emphasizes digital and electronic sources, it does not contain explicit instructions for certain less-common print sources that earlier editions covered. For this reason, some of the examples below have been adapted from the instructions for sources with similar attributes (e.g., the conference proceedings example is derived from the instructions the 7 th edition manual gives for citing edited collections). Every example below that has been adapted in this way is accompanied by a note explaining how it was adapted.

Please also note: While this resource contains many examples of citations for uncommon print sources that we think are helpful, it may not account for every possibility. For even more examples of how to cite uncommon print sources, please refer to the 7 th edition of the APA Publication Manual.

Entry in a Dictionary, Thesaurus, or Encyclopedia with a Group Author

The 7 th edition of the APA manual does not provide specific guidance on how to cite physical reference works such as dictionaries, thesauruses, or encyclopedias. Therefore, this citation, as well as the one for an individual author of an entry in a reference work, is modeled on that of a chapter in an edited book or anthology, both which are similar in format to reference works.

For example, if Deleuze and Guattari’s work is cited in Nail and you did not read the original work, list the Nail reference in the References. In the text, use the following citation:

Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the assemblage (as cited in Nail, 2017)….

Dissertation Abstract

The cabin was described that it has the width of a double-bed, but the length of a queen. In addition, it is claimed to make you feel that it’s bigger than a 31-footer’s. Moreover, thanks to the workmanship design, the aft-cabin is built to maximize the interior volume as well as the space for you and your guests. The aft-cabin offers enough space for a good night’s sleep which is appreciated for extended cruising crew.

Corsair 880 is well known for the sailing characteristics as well as the renowned for speed and synonymous for cruiser-racer with style. The boat has radically different aesthetics in both the interior and exterior design for a truly trailerable trimaran.
