Whisper Foiling Cat

The White Formula Whisper is the new foiling catamaran that brings foiling technology to the mainstream.

Designer Ron Price had the idea to bring an affordable flying catamaran to the world sailing scene. After watching the incredible 2014 Americas Cup upset, Ron decided if he couldn’t get a ride on one he would build his own!

Ron designed the Whisper completely on computer and modeled it using very sophisticated marine development software. Six months later he was well on his way to launching his prototype. On day one of testing the Whisper prototype foiled flawlessly for over 4 minutes without dropping off the foils.

The production moulds were completed on a 3D 6 axis CNC milling machine, and the first boats have been built and are on the publicity circuit visiting many of the worlds boat shows. The new wing style mainsail shows all the flare of a wing sail with the easy storage of a regular sail. An active foiling system constantly self adjusts to maintain steady and stable flying.

The boat is made using a cutting edge epoxy / carbon fibre infusion method, fully built in the UK and fitted out in the White Formula production facility in Essex. The Whisper comes in at a platform weight of only 78Kg. The advancements in 3D printing and laser sintering has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, the recent application of printing Carbon Fibre has lowered the cost of manufacturing intricate moving parts. All of the internal parts of the boat are computer cut using an in-house 3 axis CNC machine. This means we can incorporate weight saving areas into the structure of the hull, lowering the overall weight.

The Whisper is a one design class, but when it comes to the styling, the sky is the limit. Our customers have had some pretty wacky ideas, so we are looking forward to a pretty interesting start line, coupled with the ability to foil in just 5 knots of wind we could see some “pretty fly styles”.

The A class catamaran, a unique spirit

The A-Class is a single-handed class, the freedom given by the gauge has allowed it to be always at the forefront of technological innovations. The result is a sports catamaran with a magnificent look, impressive and performing around 3 buoys. This open gauge allowed her to be one of the first light sail series to be equipped with foil. The A-Class now flies above the water.

Class A program

It is a boat intended more for regatta sailors than for sailors looking for "calm" rides. There are many shipyards producing A Class boats, including Marstrom, Bimare , Nacra, Addiction, Askell and DNA.

Second hand Class A catamaran

The second-hand A Classes remain quite expensive for recent productions, however, if one is looking for a catamaran for sailing more oriented towards leisure than performance: the bill will be much less expensive.

The entry prices for Class A boats are very low: sometimes 1000$ for old boats, on the other hand, recent Class A boats, those which can perform in championships, are traded for 20000$.

Extraordinary boats: TF35 semi-automated foiler

The TF35 is a new one-design catamaran with a unique computer-controlled automatic foil system, that will race in the TF35 Trophy. We get all the info on these incredible foiling catamarans

In recent America’s Cups we have seen a small army of grinders pumping away to bring pressure to their flying yacht’s hydraulic lifeblood, while flight controllers attempt to keep up with their speeding craft’s accelerations in three dimensions. But while these athletic and technical skills are impressive, these days there are simply better alternatives to humans carrying out these roles. Enter the TF35.

The TF35 is a new one design foiling catamaran created to take foil-borne sailing to the next level. It has no hydraulics to keep primed. Conventional ropes and winches handle the sails and raising and lowering of foils, but battery powered electric actuators drive the rest, including split-second adjustments of the foils and rudder elevators. What’s more, these operations are automated, leaving crew free to focus on skills such as helming and tactics.

The shape, size and efficiency of the TF35’s foils means it requires just seven knots of wind to take off upwind and nine downwind (when boat speed reaches 2x and 3x wind speed respectively). It also passes the acid test of foiling upwind and through tacks.

A small penalty for having such light wind take-off is ultimate top speed, which is 18-19 knots upwind and 34-35 knots downwind, but still plenty fast enough.

After the prototype launched at the end of 2019, the new TF35 is enjoying its first full season of competition this year. The class follows on from the D35, the one design catamaran that provided sterling service on Lake Geneva for 16 years and countless Bol d’Or Mirabaud victories for Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi , his sister Dona’s Ladycat-Spindrift and many others.

Aside from becoming fully foiling, a significant difference between the two boats is that the TF35 is designed to race not just on lakes but also on open water, and this year the circuit will include events in Scarlino, Italy, in September.

Behind the TF35 is an America’s Cup-level design team led by Gonzalo Redondo of d3 Applied Technologies, who most recently headed the CFD team for American Magic . On structures is Cup veteran Dirk Kramers with Swiss genius Luc du Bois on the design and flight control system, plus Britain’s own Adam May, Marc Menec and Jean-Marie Fragniere.

The majority of the TF35’s components were created in Brittany with Multiplast building the hulls, beams by Airbus, and Heol Composites fabricating the intricate foils. Spars are from Lorima, with some of the few non-French parts including carbon diamonds and PBO shrouds from Future Fibres.

Surprisingly, the TF35’s platform was one of its least important parts. The aim was to remove every gram of weight while maintaining a structure stiff enough to prevent deformation due to high foil and rig loads.

The D35’s flying central hull now terminates beneath the mast with a long, heavily-rigged bowsprit protruding more than 4.5m forward of the bows. The rig is relatively conventional for a modern day multihull, with a wing section rotating spar and sails that, thanks to the boat’s near permanent upwind apparent wind angle, are never eased far.

To reduce weight the mast has a diamond and a two-part construction, allowing it to fit into a 40ft container along with the boat.

The mainsail is a ‘deck sweeper’, with part of the foot touching the flat deck of the centre hull, creating an end plate to increase the sail’s efficiency. However, this requires an unusual boom – it is curved, like half of a windsurfer’s wishbone boom.

Understandably, much of the development has been focussed on the TF35’s foils, their operation and software control.

Most other flying cats have J-shaped lifting foils, with some ‘V’ (dihedral). This shape provides some inherent ride height stability (the more immersed the foil becomes, the more surface area there is to provide lift) without requiring constant trimming.

However, due to the foils on the TF35 being computer controlled this is less necessary, so they can have a more efficient, flatter and less draggy shape, albeit with a massive 2.7m span.

TF35 auto adjustment

On most flying catamarans the amount of lift a foil produces is determined by its rake. On the TF35 rake of the entire foil is controlled by a rope-driven worm-drive. This is a broad brush setting, determined by conditions, point of sail, wave state, etc.

Split second adjustment of the amount of lift comes from an aircraft wing-style flap on its trailing edge which is able to articulate by up to 5°. This demanded some intricate construction but its operation requires substantially less power than adjusting the rake of the entire foil.

Compared to the main foils, the TF35’s rudders are a simpler inverted ‘T’ configuration with the shaft on each fitting into a cassette attached to each transom via gudgeons and pintles.

Like the main foil, lift is also adjusted by computer/electric actuator via a flap on the elevator’s trailing edge. The amount of rudder lift determines the overall pitch of the boat. This, in turn, affects the rake of the main foils, thus trimming them in conjunction is vital – another job that’s vastly improved by automation.

A key feature of the AC50 s was rudder differential – ie negative lift in the windward elevator, or a downward force that dramatically increases righting moment.

The TF35 also offers rudder differential, but to a much more limited degree. The automation means crew only have the option of switching rudder differential on or off, similarly they have just four settings for ride height and overall boat pitch.

This leaves the software to ensure that foils are trimmed to the optimum and that rudder differential (where loads can quickly spiral out of control) never causes structural limits to be exceeded.

The computer is stored alongside a lithium-ion battery within the central flying hull, controlling four electric motors operating trim flaps – a relatively straightforward system. However, the software behind it, monitoring parameters such as ride height, 3D attitude and accelerations with split second accuracy, is monumentally complex. It requires a multitude of sensors from state of the art GPS to ultrasonic altitude sensors and rate gyros.

While maxi racing yachts with complex hydraulic systems typically use a programmable logic controller (PLC), so the TF35 has a similarly programmable brain, the difference being that it is electronic, controlled via software.

This is especially tested during manoeuvres, when the software must recognise when two foils are in the water and the boat is developing twice its usual lift. So vital is this software that it’s one of the TF35’s strictest one design elements.

As a piece of ground-breaking technology, the TF35 is perhaps the first one-design class to have its own operating system.

HAMILTON, Bermuda — The wingsail of a foiling F50 catamaran being steered by Martine Grael of Brazil suddenly crumpled and crashed to the deck during a SailGP preseason training camp. There were no injuries. The boat was foiling at about 70 kph (43 mph) when the wing measuring 24 meters (79 feet) failed. Video from the boat showed the crew beginning a maneuver. One crewman ran to the jib, which began flapping, and another crewman scrambled to the base of the wing and then back to the starboard cockpit, narrowly avoiding the falling debris. A loud popping sound could be heard.

VIDEO: Candela electric foiling boat makes record breaking Baltic crossing

In another breakthrough for electric foiling vessels, a Swedish team from Candela last week set a world record by driving a hydrofoiling Candela C-8 between Stockholm, Sweden, and the Finnish autonomous region of Åland, marking the first time an electric boat has crossed the Baltic Sea and made the journey between the two countries. They even returned the same day – at 95% lower costs than a fossil-fuel-powered boat.

“The aim was to demonstrate that zero-emission sea travel is not only possible today, but that foiling electric ships and boats are so much cheaper to operate than fossil-fueled vessels,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela.

While the record breaking trip was made with the latest version Candela C-8 leisure boat, the company also uses that vessel as a test bed for its larger vessels which, of course, including foiling ferries. This fall, Candela P-12, the company’s new 30-passenger elrctric foiling ferry , will begin operating the Ekerö-Stockholm City Hall route, where it is expected to halve travel times thanks to its not producing damaging wakes, allowing it to gain permission to travel quickly in the inner city.

Another city that will soon see a Candela P-12 on its waters is Berlin, with Candela recently announcing the sale of a P-12 to Funkhaus/Reederei Riedel, which plans to deploy it on a shuttle service connecting the East Side Gallery, near Ostbahnhof, with the cultural hub Funkhaus.

The recent record trip across the Baltic and back was made last Thursday in the latest version of the Candela C-8, equipped with a Polestar battery, starting at 6 a.m. from Stockholm’s Frihamn. After a charging stop in Kapellskär, the team reached Mariehamn, the capital and largest town of the Åland Islands.

“The disadvantage of electric boats has been their short range, due to traditional boat hulls consuming so much energy. With our hydrofoil technology, we combine high speed and range, but you get so many other benefits. Flying over the Åland Sea in total silence and without slamming was absolutely magical,” said Hasselskog.

The trip was made mostly with the existing charging infrastructure, and in partnership with Kempower, a charging solutions provider. In Kapellskär, the electric foiling Candela charged with a Kempower movable charger, a 40-kW wheeled charger connected to the existing power grid at the harbor. In Finland’s Mariehamn, the boat was plugged into the marina’s three-phase outlet. In the evening at 6 p.m., the electric boat pioneers flew back toward Sweden. After a top up in, Kapellskär, the C-8 returned in dense fog to the starting point, Stockholm’s Frihamn, at 11.30 p.m.

“We actually had range anxiety, but not for the Candela. The irony is that the photographer’s gasoline-powered chase boat had to refuel six times during the trip, while we only charged three times,” said Hasselskog.

Candela says that its electric foiling technology enables massive cost reductions for sea transport, which was proven when the electric costs of the cross-Baltic trip were summed up. The gasoline-powered chase boat of similar size that accompanied the trip had to refuel for EUR 750 during the 150 nautical miles – while the Candela C-8 consumed 213 kWh of electricity, at a cost of about EUR 40-5.

“We’re talking about 95% lower operating costs,” said Hasselskog. “This is a revolution that makes waterborne transport competitive with land transport in terms of costs, which we will now demonstrate in public transport in Stockholm.”

At the heart of Candela’s hydrofoil tech stack is the Flight controller, which automatically stabilizes the vessel during flight by regulating the foils, using sensors that gauge wave height and wind speed, among other factors. Even in rough weather, says Candela, passengers experience 90% less G-forces than they would on a traditional boat.
