Superyacht influencer interview: sunreef yachts founder francis lapp.

Sunreef Yachts have developed an innovative solution to using solar power onboard

Sunreef Yachts founder Francis Lapp is a force of nature whose shipyards in Poland and the United Arab Emirates build innovative custom catamarans. I say he’s a force of nature simply because no other shipyard founder I’ve interviewed—ever—blew me away quite as much as he did when we spoke during the Monaco Yacht Show .

At first, I was intrigued when he told me about his love of fast cars and competing the Paris Dakar race. But lots of business leaders like to dive fast and take risks. It was when he told me how he runs the company he stared back in 2002 in the legendary polish shipyard where Lech Walesa founded the first independent labor union in the old Soviet Union that really blew my mind.

Sunreef Yachts Founder Francis Lapp in his beloved shipyard

He tells me he manages his entire company of roughly 2,400 workers by himself! “We have no director of production. And up until recently, we’d never had a financial director either. I control all by myself,” he says with a smile. “I sleep in the shipyard. It’s the only way I know how to do it.”

“Are you crazy?” I ask?

His colleagues all nod yes, but he simply replies, “We hired the first financial director in October.”

Luxury Suites On Live-Aboard Superyacht ‘Ulyssia’ Start At $10 Million

The ultimate guide to msc ‘meraviglia’ by msc cruises, the world’s best luxury cruise lines, according to globe travel awards.

And while our conversation touched on topics ranging from his choice to build a new factory in the United Arab Emirates to how he went from racing across the Sahara to building boats in Poland. His eyes really light up when I we start talking about Sunreef’s groundbreaking line of eco-friendly boats.

The Sunreef ECO 80 made it's debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last year.

“Three, four years ago I had a dream one night to build a truly sustainable boat. And not like all the other boats that have a few the solar panels screwed onto the outside of the boat.

“So, I went to the shipyard after I woke up from my dream. Okay, I'm living in the shipyard, so it’s very easy. I asked my purchasing team to buy solar cells, not the panels, only the cells. We made some tests for about a year to have the solar cells embedded in the entire hull.” And by essentially turning the whole boat into a proprietary solar charging system, Sunreef has been able to make significant strides towards net-zero cruising.

And that type of thinking is only the beginning. In fact, the company’s wholistic approach to eco-responsible cruising is more than just a platitude. In fact, Sunreef yachts are available with cutting-edge green propulsion solutions, naturally sourced finishing materials, smart energy management and new technologies in addition to the proprietary composite-integrated solar power system produced in-house to power their newest range of solar catamarans. Their new philosophy includes using ultralight custom- engineered batteries, a revolutionary air-conditioning system, wind-generators, nontoxic bottom paints, green composite structures as well as state-of-the-art watermakers and water-saving systems.

F1 driver Fernando Alonzo relaxes aboard his Sunreef catamaran.

“Electric is easy, he adds. “While you have the sun everywhere. You have potential power. The big change is more and more people want to have a more sustainable boat and don’t need to go 30 knots all the time like they used to. For those people who really care about the environment, we have something for them. Take for instance we have former world champion formula one driver, Niko Rosberg, he loves his Eco boat. And now Fernando Alonso bought one too!”

Raphael Nadal and the custom-built door and mirrored glass of his Sunreef 80 catamaran Great White.

And since Rapha Nadal also owns a Sunreef, I just had to ask: “You seem especially skilled at getting high profile ambassadors to buy your boats. How do you do it?”

“It started with Rafael Nadal. First, he came aboard at the Cannes boat show for a short visit. One year later in Cannes, we decide together what he wants. I fly one time to visit him in his house in Majorca, and we sell him the boat. After Nadal, it was, for sure, easier for us because he is a good ambassador. Nico Rosberg is passionate about sustainability. And they all love the quiet of being on the boat where the generator isn’t running all the time.”

No wonder he’s so successful. I just can’t wait to see what he dreams up next.

The creative spark and driving force of the Sunreef Yachts shipyard is Francis Lapp – the company’s Founder and CEO.

Born in France in 1958 Francis Lapp began his business activity in the domains of electric power and construction. After occupying managerial positions in the industry’s major companies he endeavored to found his own. An avid rally enthusiast, he visited Poland for the first time to take part in a race held by Warsaw’s Automobile Club. Having discovered Poland’s immense development potential throughout the 1990’s he chose to establish his business there and soon became a successful manufacturer of electrical equipment for some of the biggest global brands, soon expanding to providing services including the design and installation of electrical, sanitary and air conditioning systems for large industrial facilities.

Poland is also where Francis Lapp developed a vivid interest for sailing, having discovered the world of small racing catamarans. This experience encouraged him to buy his first, larger cruising catamaran which he based in Madagascar. With the purchase of more similar yachts he opened a travel agency, specializing in charters on the Indian Ocean. The company grew quickly as clients demanded more comfortable and larger catamarans. While trying to source such boats, he discovered there were no suitable yachts available on the market. This inspired him to get involved in building large, customized, luxury multihulls. This is how Sunreef Yachts was born.

Starting a new business and a lifelong adventure with yachting, Francis Lapp opened a shipyard in Gdansk – a city with long traditions in naval construction and the most skilled workforce. With the launch of the world’s first 74ft luxury oceangoing catamaran with a flybridge in 2003 Sunreef Yachts started a new era in the history of yachting and sparked a change in the philosophy of multihull design.

Today, Sunreef Yachts both sailing and power, set a new standard for luxury, and spread the unique Sunreef touch around the globe. The company is now the world leader in the design and construction of large, customized luxury catamarans, exhibiting at the most important yacht shows including Cannes, Monaco, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Dubai, Qatar or Singapore.

History [ edit ]

A luxury catamaran shipyard [ edit ].

In 2002 at the Gdańsk Shipyard, Francis Lapp rented the first production hall and began preparatory works for the construction of the first craft, Sunreef 74 [1] . The catamaran was launched in September 2003. The 74-foot vessel was the first seagoing catamaran with a flybridge, which comprised the main steering position and relaxation area [2] .

Sunreef Yachts specializes both in sailing and power catamarans. The sailing range of catamarans originated with the first Sunreef 74 vessel. In 2008 the shipyard launched its first power catamaran 70 Sunreef Power JAMBO [3] , designed with the renowned Swiss yachtsman Laurent Bourgnon [4] .

In 2010 the company launched two multihull superyachts exceeding 100 feet: the Sunreef 102 Ipharra and the Sunreef 114 Che. The Sunreef 114 Che was the second largest sloop-rigged catamaran and the third largest sailing multihull in the world at the time it was launched [5] [6] . The Sunreef 102 Ipharra was the world’s first double deck sailing catamaran and the third biggest sloop rigged multihull [7] .

In 2016 Sunreef Yachts revealed a new series of sailing and power catamarans with emphasis on living space and innovative design – Sunreef Supreme range. The Sunreef Supreme is an original line of comfortable and spacious yachts and superyachts. [8] .

The New Beginning [ edit ]

In 2017, when the company celebrated its 15th anniversary [9] , Sunreef Yachts revealed a line of sailing catamarans named The New Beginning [10] [11] , including models such as: Sunreef 50, Sunreef 60, Sunreef 70, Sunreef 80 and Sunreef 100. The New beginning concept combines a classic yacht design and modern marine architecture.

The shipyard also unveiled a new range of power catamarans, including: 60 Sunreef Power, 70 Sunreef Power, 80 Sunreef Power [12] [13] and 100 Sunreef Power – a multihull superyacht [14] . The 80 Sunreef Power is the motoryacht model that one of the world-famous tennis players, Rafael Nadal commissioned for himself [15] [16] . His yacht was delivered in 2020 [17] . At the beginning of 2020 the company has been commissioned to build the largest model from the New power range: 100 Sunreef Power [18] .

In 2019 the company announced the signing of a contract for the construction of a 49 metre multihull superyacht [19] . In 2020 the company revealed 2 more superyacht concepts: sailing yacht Sunreef 460MM Cat, created in collaboration with British superyacht designer Malcolm McKeon [20] and 40 metre power catamaran 40M Sunreef Explorer [21] .

Construction Facility [ edit ]

The Sunreef Yachts shipyard consists of specialized and technologically advanced manufacturing halls, the paint shop, the upholstery workshop the carpentry workshop, and the stainless steel & aluminum workshop [22] .

A new shipyard [ edit ]

In 2020 Sunreef Yachts began to relocate to the new shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, expanding its production capacity. The new shipyard is currently nearing completion and covering an area of almost 85,000 m2.

In the new production halls a carpentry workshop is already operating, with a modern facility including one of the Europe’s largest CNC machines. The complete relocation of all offices and production workshops from the historic shipyard located in the city center to the new headquarters is scheduled for April 2021 [23] .

Custom Design [ edit ]

Sunreef Yachts offers custom-designed luxury catamarans. The shipyard's team of designers works in close collaboration with every customer to find the optimal solutions for interior arrangement. Each yacht is adapted to the owner's navigation plans, style and specific needs.

Innovations [ edit ]

Sunreef Yachts introduced many innovative solutions to the nautical world. The shipyard manufactured the world’s first luxury catamaran with a flybridge (sun deck) [24] . In 2008 the company launched the world’s first double deck power catamaran with oceanic range – the 70 Sunreef Power JAMBO [3] . In 2010 the shipyard unveiled the first double deck sailing catamaran and multihull superyacht: the Sunreef 102 Ipharra [7] [25] . Sunreef Yachts also developed the world’s first carbon built catamaran-superyacht [26] and the first folding mast on a catamaran-superyacht [27] .

Sustainability [ edit ]

In 2019 Sunreef Yachts developed environmentally responsible range of sailing and power catamarans named Sunreef Yachts Eco [28] .

The Sunreef Yachts Eco range is a concept of eco-responsible sailing and power catamarans [29] . Sunreef’s eco-yachts offer electric propulsion, smart energy management, in-house produced solar panels and ethically-sourced finishing materials among many solutions for a more sustainable yachting experience [30] .

The company is active in many fields of sustainability. At the beginning of the 2020 Sunreef Yachts became the official main partner of the Africa Eco Race [31] [32] . The goal of the race organizers is to raise the awareness of environmental issues. As an avid motorsports enthusiast, company founder and president Francis Lapp participated in the 12th edition of the Africa Eco Race onboard a custom-built rally car.

On the occasion of the World Oceans Day 2020, Sunreef Yachts announced a partnership with Nico Rosberg , becoming the brand ambassador for the Sunreef Yachts Eco range of catamarans [33] . The ambassadorship followed after the former Formula 1 Champion’s participation in Sunreef Yachts Eco Virtual Press Conference on Earth Day 2020 [34] .

Sunreef Yachts partnered up with the Rosberg Xtreme Racing Team [35] to take part in the inaugural season of the Extreme E [36] racing series. The Extreme E teams will compete in remote environments across the globe, drawing attention to climate change and nature damage [37]

Sunreef Yachts and North Sails Champion Eco-Friendly Build Materials

  • By Kim Kavin
  • September 11, 2024

Sunreef Yacht

Sunreef yachts continues to try and position itself at the forefront of eco-minded boatbuilders. It already works with solar panels that are built right into yacht hulls, propulsion and other systems that reduce the use of traditional fuels, and onboard furnishings that run the gamut from leather and animal-skin alternatives to sustainable and reclaimed woods.

Now comes the use of recycled PET bottles in the construction process for composite superstructures. “This innovative use of structural foam, composed of up to 100 percent recycled PET materials, represents a significant stride toward more eco-conscious yacht construction,” the builder announced in April.

PET plastic bottles

According to Sunreef’s team, the recycled thermoplastic core comes with quite a few benefits. The material has high resistance to process temperatures, “exceptional” chemical resistance, strong adhesion, and mechanical properties. It’s also fully recyclable. “The construction of an 80-foot sailing catamaran requires approximately 2.4 tons of this foam core, equivalent to recycling around 600,000 PET bottles,” according to the Sunreef team.

Other companies in the marine industry are thinking in similar directions. Earlier this year, North Sails announced the debut of its Renew line, which is made with bio-based and recycled raw materials.

Sunreef Yachts

The team at North Sails says it took a few years to figure out the process to source the materials and make the sails, but product director Tom Davis is confident in the result: “This product has been tested to the absolute limit, and we are confident that a sail constructed with Renew will offer comparable, unbeatable durability and sail shape for our cruising customers without compromising on performance.”

What Else Can It Be?

Recycled pet bottles are used in all kinds of products today. They can be turned into polyester fiber for clothing and carpets, a stuffing-type material for pillows and sleeping bags, straps to keep items secure on carts and pallets, and various types of packaging such as egg cartons and food containers.

Third new build Sunreef 43M Eco catamaran sold to repeat client

Third new build Sunreef 43M Eco catamaran sold to repeat client

Polish catamaran specialist Sunreef Yachts has announced that it has sold a third 43M Eco at this year's Cannes Yachting Festival . The buyer is a repeat client who previously owned a 24.4-metre Sunreef 80 Power.

"We're very proud to have a client go fully eco," said Sunreef CTO and co-founder Nicolas Lapp. "And we are already talking with other customers [about the 43M Eco]. The interest in sustainable yachting is growing. This is the direction that we wanted to go in, so we're happy to see the market agrees."

The first unit was sold in late 2022 and will be the world's largest electric catamaran once delivered.

The hull, superstructure and rigging of the vessel is designed with integrated solar panels that supply the yacht with 250kWh of energy in a 24-hour period. An advanced hydro-generation system will also produce "clean power" for emission-free cruising and "infinite range", according to the shipyard.

Accommodation is for 12 guests, including a master cabin with a private office and direct access to a lounge space at the bow.

Leisure highlights include an "ocean lounge" that connects the aft deck to the swim platform, creating a single space for waterside lounging. This area is heavily customisable, with clients able to instal a massage room, a bar or a fitness area. An invisible aft garage is also nearby for tender and toy storage.

A second sun lounging option can be found up on the flybridge, arranged with a spa pool, sunpads, a bar and dining area and an outdoor cinema.

This follows the reveal of a smaller entry in the shipyard's sailing catamaran series, the 35M Eco.
