British tech tycoon Mike Lynch likely died of suffocation after his 'Bayesian' superyacht sank off Sicily: reportTech tycoon Mike Lynch likely suffocated after his yacht sank off Sicily last month. Seven people died after the "Bayesian" yacht went down, including Lynch and his daughter Hannah. Three crew members are under investigation following the incident. British tech tycoon Mike Lynch likely died of suffocation after his "Bayesian" superyacht sank off Sicily last month , autopsy results suggested, an investigative source told Reuters . Seven people died after the yacht went down during a storm off the coast of Porticello on August 19, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. The unnamed source told Reuters that initial autopsy results on Hannah Lynch's body were inconclusive, but they ruled out traumas or wounds as a cause of death. Passengers Jonathan Bloomer, who was the Chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, as well as attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, also likely suffocated to death following the sinking, autopsy results suggested. Italian media reported that their bodies showed signs of having been trapped inside air bubbles before suffocating to death. No water was found in their lungs, trachea, or stomach, suggesting that they ran out of oxygen while inside air pockets. Examinations indicated that Recaldo Thomas, a chef on board the yacht who also died in the incident, likely died by drowning, the Reuters source said. Investigators previously said that five of the bodies they recovered had been discovered in the same cabin. Bentivoglio Fiandra from the local fire rescue service said in August: "The yacht tended to the right and obviously the bodies tried to go to the other side and take refuge in their cabins." "We found five bodies in a cabin on the left and another one in the third cabin on the left. They were in the higher part of the shipwreck," he added, per The Telegraph. Three crew members are under investigation following the sinking — Matthew Griffiths, a sailor who was on watch duty on the vessel when it sank; James Cutfield, the ship's captain; and Tim Parker Eaton, the yacht's engineer. The head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, previously said he was investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Griffiths previously opened up to prosecutors about what occurred when the yacht began to sink. According to Italian news agency ANSA, the British sailor said he had awoken Cutfield as "the wind was blowing at 20 knots." He said the captain then "ordered to wake everyone else up" before Griffiths "stored away the pillows and plants, closed the windows of the sitting room on the bow and some hatches." Griffiths added that he was thrown from the ship into the water once as it tilted to its side but said he climbed back on board and was "walking on the walls" as he and the crew tried to save those they could. New on YahooA billionaire NFL owner's superyacht is now available for charter. It'll cost you.NFL owner Shahid Khan's superyacht Kismet is available for charter at $3 million a week. Kismet, which will debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, features luxury amenities and can host 12 guests. Added costs for provisions, gratuities, and taxes can raise the weekly charter cost to $5.4 million. Want to vacation like a billionaire? You can — for $3 million a week. The superyacht belonging to Shahid Khan, the owner of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars who is worth $13.3 billion, according to Forbes, is officially available for charter. Kismet, Khan's new yacht, will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month. The 122-meter yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests — and a crew of 36 available to serve them — and, like any superyacht worth its weight, has some special amenities . A "Balinese-inspired" spa features a hammam, sauna, and cryotherapy chamber, as well as a massage table and chromotherapy bathtub offering some sort of color-related treatment. For more active wellness, there's a gym, basketball court, and pickleball court. There are three pools — two are jacuzzis — spread over six decks, four outdoor showers, four bars, four fireplaces, two fire pits, and one helipad. For your viewing pleasure, there is an outdoor cinema, and for your listening pleasure, a DJ booth and grand piano. And because billionaires love to play, there is a suite of water toys aboard, including Jet Skis, SeaBobs, e-foils, and WaveRunners. Khan is a committed superyacht owner. His previous superyacht, also named Kismet, was purchased by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt last year. While its final sales price was not disclosed, it was listed for about $160 million. Renamed Whisper, the yacht was built by the same German shipyard as the new Kismet, Lürssen, and measured 95 meters. "The yacht has exceeded all expectations of the client for whom we have built his third yacht in total," Peter Lürssen, a managing partner at Lürssen, said in a statement about the newest Kismet. Kismet is the largest yacht on display at the Monaco Yacht Show, which will feature 120 superyachts . Renaissance, the second largest at 112 meters, charters for the same weekly price of $3 million. While the nine-figure sales prices of these yachts make their seven-figure charter rates seem like a bargain, renting out a superyacht is not for the faint of wallet. In addition to the charter fee, there are costs associated with provisions which can come to as much as 40% of the fee; gratuities, as much as 20% of the fee; and taxes, also as much as 20%. That means a week aboard the Kismet can actually cost as much as $5.4 million. He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht. Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC. The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011. Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011. HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing. In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges . Read more: Lynch's co-defendant dies days before yacht disaster Hannah Lynch Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage. She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports. The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly. Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua. Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board. The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial. Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified. Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors. Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipmaker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors. Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said. But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports? “There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview. The captain of the sailboat that came to the Bayesian’s rescue said his craft had sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale. He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in. “Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast. “If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said. Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water. “So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said. Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were also on the wreck Wednesday. In all, some 27 divers were taking rotations, including four who helped with the recovery of the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement, which for the first time Wednesday referred to the operation as a “recovery.” The limited dive time was designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles. “The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation's managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive. “It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said. Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs. “We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.” “It’s not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it,” he added. “They’ve arrived at the level of the cabins, but it’s not like you can open the door.” This article tagged under:Encouraging the philanthropic ventures and sustainability projects that aim to improve the oceans and environment around us. Navigation for News CategoriesSuperyacht captain says he did everything possible to save those on board - reports. Italian divers retrieve the body of one of the victims of the Bayesian sinking. Photo: AFP The captain of a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily , killing seven, says he did everything possible to save those on board, according to local media. New Zealander James Cutfield was at the helm of the Bayesian when it went down in August during a storm. British tech magnate Mike Lynch, the yacht's owner , and his teenage daughter Hannah were among those killed. Cutfield is now under investigation by Italian authorities for manslaughter and shipwreck, along with two other crew members. Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow. Cutfield was now suffering through the darkest days of his life, sources close to him told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera . He had repeatedly insisted that he did not abandon those on board, they said - he did everything possible to save them, but the vessel took on too much water. Cutfield's brother-in-law Mark described him to Corriere Della Sera as a "very experienced" sailor who was highly respected by his colleagues. There were 22 passengers and crew on board the Bayesian when it sank. Photo: VesselFinder Another sailor, who saw Cutfield just before the sinking, told the newspaper he had not expected the storm to blow in. Meanwhile, Bayesian crew member Matthew Griffiths, who was on watch the night the yacht sank, has told prosecutors that Cutfield rescued a "little girl and her mother" from the wreck. The pair were later found floating on a life raft. Griffiths said he woke Cutfield up when the wind reached 20 knots, and the captain gave the order to wake all the other people on board, Italian news agency Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata reported Griffiths as saying. Shortly afterwards, the yacht "tilted" and fell into the water, Griffiths was reported as saying. He described walking on the walls as the yacht lay on its side. Post-mortem examinations would be carried out on some of the victims on Monday (local time), the news agency reported. Earlier, Oceanlaw New Zealand partner Karyn van Wijngaarden told RNZ the manslaughter investigation would take months at least . "Prosecutors will be considering the events leading up to the sinking and whether or not it was a freak incident," van Wijngaarden said. The weather on the day of the sinking, actions taken by the crew and how the vessel was run would all be looked at - a process that would take many months, van Wijngaarden said. A further complication was that the Bayesian was at the bottom of "quite a considerable" volume of water , she said. "Even just getting to it seems challenging."
