The Quick and Easy Guide to Superyacht Interior Careers

yacht interior manager

Following the success of our ‘Quick and Easy Guide to Superyacht Deck Careers’ , we step inside and offer our take on how to enter and get ahead in the interior department.

To ensure that we are up to speed with all of the latest requirements, we take our lead from the recently-launched careers guidance platform, Academy by Ephemeris, whose comprehensive interior pathway clearly lays out all of the steps you need to follow in order to succeed in your yachting career.

Stewardess: The day-to-day

At the entry-level position of the interior pathway, stewardesses are responsible for maintaining the interior on board a yacht and providing five-star service to owners and guests at all times. The role encompasses varied tasks such as laundry, housekeeping, interior detailing, flower arranging, food and beverage service and onboard event planning. Reporting to the second stewardess, chief stewardess or even the captain, depending on the size of the yacht, the steward/ess role requires a strong work ethic, a great deal of organisation, attention to detail and discretion, as well as a willingness to listen and learn the ropes on the job. A junior stewardess within the interior team on a 45-50m+ boat would typically start their career in housekeeping and laundry rather than in service. In contrast, on a smaller yacht, the stewardess can be a department of just one person, with responsibility for all the interior duties on board. This could include setting up and preparing meals, housekeeping, laundry, organising guest activities, formal meal service, cabin turndowns, and the list goes on!

As the interior team enjoys the most face-to-face time with guests and is responsible for communicating their wishes to the captain, chef and deck department, it is important to maintain good communication, high levels of professionalism, and a positive attitude at all times when undertaking this role.

How do I become a stewardess? Qualifications and training

Since it is the entry-level position for the interior pathway, one of the advantages of the junior steward/ess role is that it does not require many qualifications or schooling, meaning that it serves as the perfect gateway to start your career onboard.

EPH4 2

As outlined on Academy by Ephemeris’ interior pathway, all crew need to show evidence of having completed STCW basic safety training (a five-day course), as well as an ENG1 medical certificate. In addition, some yachts may also require certification in Food Safety and Hygiene (a one-day course which can be completed in person or online). Yachts to which the ISPS Code applies require all crew to be trained and hold a Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) certificate (this is a half-day course that can be completed online).

If you are looking to upskill and ensure your CV stands out from the crowd, there are many options for more specific interior training across areas such as administration, galley, laundry, interior management, silver service, drink mixology, flower arranging, and much more. See the Academy by Ephemeris website for a list of accredited courses.

Chief Stewardess: The day-to-day

Providing that a yacht's interior department consists of more than one individual, the chief stew is responsible for managing the schedule and maintenance of the interior, as well as ensuring that guests receive excellent service.

The chief stew oversees and trains the team in all aspects of the interior department to ensure everything is executed to the highest standard, encompassing tasks such as general cleaning and bed making, folding laundry, polishing silver and creating flower arrangements, and delivering professional and impeccable levels of service.

How do I become a chief stewardess? Qualifications and training

Once you have shown evidence of the basic safety qualifications outlined above, unlike with many senior deck positions, there is no a set list of mandatory qualifications which are required to be eligible to apply for chief stewardess roles.

EPH4 3

There is a plethora of options for you to explore which are outlined on the Academy by Ephemeris interior pathway , including Advanced Laundry Service, Advanced Food and Beverage Service, Cigar Service, Floristry and Plant Maintenance, and many more.

Purser: The day-to-day

If you enjoy figures, have a calm head on your shoulders and are supremely organised, the job of a yacht purser may be the one for you and serve as an alternative option to becoming a chief steward/ess.

Still under the remit of the interior department, the yacht purser is a senior role who reports to the captain, often taking on some of the duties and administration, which would be completed by the captain or chief stewardess on smaller yachts. Although the role varies depending on the needs of each individual yacht, the purser can serve as the head of the interior and manage the interior team.

Day to day, the purser is responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective operations of the yacht, encompassing finances, crew management and administration, guest and crew travel arrangements, administrative tasks and much more. The purser oversees accounting, purchasing, inventories and may also assist the captain with compliance and certification requirements, and the planning of guest itineraries.

How do I become a purser? Qualifications and training

Although there are no mandatory training requirements for pursers, it would be wise for prospective candidates to consider that this is a senior role requiring knowledge and skills across many different areas and departments. This includes administration, finance, maritime law, safety and security awareness, an understanding of ISPS and ISM protocols, as well as strong computer skills.

Those with an existing degree in business, finance or accounting may already be well suited to the role. However, if you do not immediately recognise yourself in this description, there’s no need to panic!

EPH4 4

There are numerous purser courses you can undertake to bring yourself up to speed. These cover topics including VAT, crew administration and vessel operations, human resource management, customs and immigration, and much more. Details of these courses can be found on the Academy by Ephemeris interior pathway .

Sarah Stanger, a spokesperson from Academy by Ephemeris says: “If you are looking to climb the interior career ladder, it is vital to always maintain focus on your professional and personal development, which can be tricky in the demanding working environment faced by crew. Our interior pathway helps to lay out the steps which you need to follow in an intuitive and straightforward way, which is totally unique amongst superyacht career guidance platforms.”

To explore interior pathways for yourself, visit the Academy by Ephemeris website here .

The role of a superyacht Interior Manager

Life aboard a superyacht must be an oasis of tranquility and pleasure for its occupants. Ensuring this is the case depends on a multitude of tasks being coordinated and executed with maximum precision by the crew and the final responsibility corresponds to the Interior Manager .

A super luxury boat requires constant attention throughout the year, but winter is especially demanding because it is the time when repairs, renovations, and essential maintenance tasks are usually performed.

Beyond technical maintenance, comfort in a superyacht has a lot to do with ensuring that everything on the boat is harmonious, beautiful, and elegant. The Interior Manager knows in deep what are the tastes of the owners and how to fit those tastes with the latest trends in decoration, celebrations, and entertainment.

Owners, guests, and crew members must have everything they need to carefree, do their job, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle .

On the other hand, the Interior Manager is responsible for providing support and supervision at all times to the crew, also collaborating in the selection and onboarding of each new team member.

The best Interior Management professionals highlight some of the main qualities that are needed to perform a function of such importance successfully:

  • Project Management skills
  • Team Management abilities
  • Empathy in communication
  • Well negotiation skills
  • Calmness under pressure
  • The anticipation in front of potential risks
  • A positive focus in every circumstance
  • Smiling honestly

The role of a Superyacht Interior Manager by SCS Yachting

The role of an Interior Manager is demanding and also very rewarding. The fundamental thing is to understand that no two days are the same. One day it is necessary to supervise routine operations; the next day, VIP guests arrive by a private plane that will be transferred to the ship to enjoy an ultra-exclusive party. Next week the plan is to navigate spectacular Norwegian fjords … and so on.

Every single day, forecast and precision are required. The conclusion is simple, for an Interior manager, the best description of a typical day is that a typical day… does not exist.

Interior Careers Advice

Thinking of working in the interior.

Interior crew are those who maintain the interior of the yacht from housekeeping, laundry, and service for the principal. It is a varied and exciting environment to be in and no two days are the same.

What is the daily routine of working a Yacht Steward or Stewardess?

Being a Yacht Stewardess is a wonderful, multifaceted role that challenges you in different ways, enabling you to learn many skills and develop a fulfilling and diverse career. The responsibilities of a Yacht Stewardess vary depending on your level and the yacht size.

Responsibilities include

Service skills: Anything from basic breakfast buffet style to fine dining standard, cocktail making, wine pairing and of course how to set beautiful, creative tables for each meal. You will learn about the best crockery and cutlery to use at different times and how to present a menu to the guests after collaborating with the Head Chef. Each meal is a chance to make the guests feel special and welcome in their floating home.

Housekeeping: Stewardess’s must possess an excellent eye for detail, effective organisational skills and the ability to work quickly yet accurately under pressure. Everything will be cleaned daily, usually more than once. You will learn the best cleaning products to use for which surface, how to create beautiful beds in no time at all and maintain the standard of cleanliness that Yacht Owners expect.

Laundry: Duties include washing and drying both the guest and crew clothing, steaming, pressing or ironing any clothes that need it and ensure they are returned to the correct place. You will become a master at stain removal. Those with seamstress skills will also more than likely use these on board too.

As you progress within your career and become a senior member, additional responsibilities can include but are not limited to:

  • Team Management: Maintaining a harmonious, positive environment for your team and training them in areas that need practice.
  • Guest Management: Communicating effectively with the Owners and guests, almost with PA like duties.
  • Accounting and basic Budgeting: Each Head of Department will be responsible for their teams’ accounts and report these to the Purser or Captain on board.
  • Provisioning and Stock Take: Maintaining all interior stock from crew uniform to guest toiletries is a large task that requires excellent organisational skills.
  • Overall Interior Maintenance: Generally ensuring the interior is kept in excellent condition, operational procedures will be kept up to date and repair lists are maintained.

What skills would be an advantage to applicants?

  • High end Hotel Housekeeping experience
  • Fine Dining or Michelin restaurant experience
  • Private Aviation
  • First Class Aviation

Career Progression and Opportunities

Within the interior of a yacht you can expect to progress from Junior Stewardess to Senior Stewardess, to Head of Service, Head Housekeeper or Second Stewardess before securing the role of Chief Stewardess or Interior Manager.

Progression can come from internal promotions when you have proved yourself in your role on board, or you can seek them out on board new vessels.

Substantial time to gain experience should be spent in each role prior to promotions and progressions.

What qualifications do you need for each yacht interior job role?

Skills & experience.

In order to step into the Chief Stewardess role you will have spent a number of years in the industry and spent time as a Second Stewardess, Head Housekeeper or Head of Service.

Experience is key to stepping into the chief role as you will have to build and establish a relationship with yacht owners and guests, manage a team, train the interior crew to the highest of standards, as well as look after accounts, budgets, inventories and in some cases crew travel arrangements.

As Chief Stewardess you will be looked to for advice from your interior crew, liaise and work closely with the other Heads of Departments on board and possess excellent interpersonal skills in order to liaise with the Principal or Family Office, Management Companies, Yacht Agents, Charter Brokers and pass the details on to the rest of the crew.

Qualifications

  • STCW95: Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers
  • Eng 1 Medical Certificate
  • Food & Hygiene Level 2

As well as the legally required yachting qualifications, stated above, you will also require a number of other training certificates. Please note these are not necessarily required for every Chief Stewardess position, but these are regularly asked for

  • WSET level 2 and above
  • Cocktail courses
  • Excel and Microsoft experience or courses
  • Mental health training
  • Accounting or Purser training

To become a Stewardess you will ideally come from a high end hospitality background, such as a 5* hotel or fine dining/Michelin star restaurant. The key is having a good base knowledge of service and or housekeeping and a positive and happy outlook as well as a strong work ethic and a desire to learn.

Additional Qualifications

  • GUEST programme PYA accredited interior stewardess courses
  • Barista, Cocktail or Bar Tender qualifications

Many yachts will employ Stewardesses with additional skills such as Beauty Therapy, Massage, Hairdressing, Nurse, PT and Yoga Instructors to name a few. The roles will be a secondary role, comprising of around 20% of your duties on board, with the other 80% of your time spent as a Stewardess.

In order to secure a position with additional skills you will need proven experience and shore based qualifications in your field as well as references that can verify your experience.

For this position you will need to be flexible, a great team player and be comfortable interacting closely with guests.

  • Shore based qualifications in your chosen field

Sundeck of Revelry yacht by Verge Yacht Design

The rising interior design firm behind some of the latest eco-friendly superyacht refits

When turning superyacht dreams into reality, finding the right yacht designer is crucial. US-based Verge Yacht Design , founded in 2021 by principal interior designer Anita Rivera Turcotte, has quickly proven itself as a leader in the industry despite its relatively young age. The firm has already worked on an impressive array of projects, collaborating with renowned shipyards such as Feadship , Amels and Heesen , among others. Currently working on two new builds and two refits, with three additional refits scheduled for 2024-2025, Verge Yacht Design specialises in full-service superyacht interiors and personalised furnishings, all while being committed to using environmentally conscious materials in its work.

Bespoke superyacht interiors

At Verge Yacht Design, innovation is at the heart of every project. The firm collaborates closely with yacht owners and crew to create stylish and functional spaces that cater to the client’s lifestyle and taste. Verge is known for pushing the boundaries of traditional yacht design, offering creative and customised solutions that are truly one-of-a-kind. A hallmark of Verge’s approach is the incorporation of biomimicry, drawing inspiration from nature to enhance the design.

A prime example of Verge’s expertise is on board the 54.3-metre, Amels-built Revelry , which underwent an extensive eight-month refit at Thunderbolt Marine from May to December 2022. Verge Yacht Design led the complete interior transformation, which included bespoke furnishings, reupholstery, curated artwork, custom Roman sheers and blackout window shades, custom lighting and technical upgrades. The sundeck was also reimagined with an LED-backlit quartz bar top, bespoke seating, spatial reconfiguration, custom barware and a soft refit of the bridge deck and crew areas.

“Anita and the Verge team channelled their many high-end talents to produce a refitted interior beyond our owner’s dreams,” praises the captain. “From design to fit, Verge paired yacht practicality and sustainability into their aesthetic design. As with all projects, when challenges present themselves, it’s the commitment that excels a team to the finish line.”

Service that goes beyond design

Verge Yacht Design has significantly expanded its scope beyond yacht interiors to offer a full suite of services, including project management, furniture design and product engineering. The firm oversees every aspect of a project, from the initial design phase to final implementation, ensuring smooth execution through a trusted network of collaborators and vendors.

The studio’s designs are distinguished by their engineering precision. To bolster this technical expertise, Verge has been collaborating with renowned naval architect Nick Eremic on structural engineering. Eremic’s knowledge in engineering and construction ensures that superyacht concepts are both realistic and functional, while also facilitating an organised process for contractors during the build phase.

Eremic will be joining the Verge Yacht Design team on a full-time basis in September 2024. His expertise will enhance the firm’s capabilities, allowing them to offer 3D models and renderings, engineering drawings comprehensive project management services.

Leading the way in eco-friendly yacht design

Committed to staying at the forefront of eco-friendly innovation, Verge Yacht Design strives to integrate technologies and practices that minimise environmental impact into every aspect of its designs. The firm actively sources materials that reduce weight to lower emissions, as well as carbon-neutral decking and upcycled components.

A key focus for Verge is understanding the origins and production processes of the materials it uses to ensure they are environmentally certified. By selecting marine-grade materials that are reusable and biodegradable, particularly for closed-loop systems, Verge minimises environmental impact while adhering to the highest standards of sustainability.

Verge also prioritises the full lifecycle of each material, carefully evaluating its impact on the marine environment. This involves assessing energy consumption, waste production and the potential for recycling and reuse. Looking to the future, Verge considers the long-term impacts of its material choices, emphasising biodegradability, recyclability and positive end-of-life outcomes. But sustainability in yacht design at Verge extends beyond material selection. The firm also focuses on reducing its carbon footprint throughout the entire logistics and procurement process. This includes maintaining transparency in the supply chain, consolidating shipments, optimising routes, partnering with green carriers, and sourcing locally whenever possible.

Verge Yacht Design is currently developing a yacht-specific furniture line in collaboration with a luxury brand, as well as a marine fabric line, both set to launch in 2026. These exciting ventures position Verge as a brand to watch in the world of superyacht design.
