Yachting Club of America & Reciprocity

Reciprocity with more than 700 other yacht clubs for our members is made possible by THYC belonging to the Yachting Club of America. If you plan to use this privilege, we suggest investigating the following:

Check if the yacht club you have selected is a member of the Yachting Club of America. This is done by clicking the link below to Yachting Club of America, log in at "Members Only" using the information on your membership card page, and then select "YCA Registered Yacht & Sailing Clubs" to see if your desired yacht club is a member.

It is best to check with your selected yacht club to see if they have any restrictions. We have heard that the Chicago Yacht Club requires that you live more than 35 miles from their clubhouse.

Reciprocal Privileges

The Cottage Park Yacht Club is a registered member of The Yachting Club of America (YCA). YCA has reciprocal privilege agreements with nearly 800 Yacht Clubs throughout the United States. Reciprocity being defined as “A network of Yacht Clubs in agreement for the mutual exchange of privileges within that specific group of clubs.”

Although the extent of privileges may vary slightly, generally, an YCA yachtist can expect to be allowed to use all of the welcoming clubs’ available facilities and services, including short term berthing, meal and bar service, heads and showers, etc. Typically, a yachtist can stop at a Yacht Club along their trip, and if the club visited is a YCA member, they are granted access.

It is always prudent to call ahead to let them know you’re coming as well as to determine what services are available.

At right, are some of the many friends that have extended their privileges to the Officers and Members of the CPYC.

....the answer is clearly a YES....we belong to a club and we have reciprocals on the side and the Canadian side......all of the clubs we have been to have great facilities ...power,wifi, pools, sauna and great bathrooms..

if it wasnt for reciprocals I would have never entered the Royal Canadian Yacht Club or the Boulevard Club etc.....

we could easily spend the season all over the lake without paying for one slip and with great company...the yaucht clubs are very friendly......around here the reciprocal usually offers 3 day at the club.....

almost all the clubs are members of the GYA. Reciprocity is automatic and full between them and other GYA clubs. Non GYA members are typically allowed full access to the facilities, member rates on rentals, space, ect. But unlike other GYA members you may have to pay for it at the time. Generally we don't allow cross to non-GYA clubs unless we have done business with that club in the past.

There are other advantages to being a member of a yacht club anywhere than cross however. Like if you need and don't know which of the four local do a decent job, or who to talk to about sail , where the good is, all of that information is freely available for the of a drink at any yacht club anywhere in the world, and often the ticket to get to the bar is a YC .

The other suggestion is that many YC's have discounted rates for non-local members. We for instance offer a $10/month for people while they are out cruising.

for 14 years, I resigned from that club and joined the Yacht Club. My and I have found the membership there to be very rewarding. Many aspects to our social life revolves around the club and many of our closest friends are also members.

SDYC offers reciprocal privileges to members of other yacht clubs with whom the reciprocity has been established. This includes a slip, if available, for the visiting yachtsmen's vessel, free of charge, for the first three nights. There are checks in place, though, for those who might try to abuse the hospitality of the club by staying for free for three nights, going somewhere else for a night and then trying to return for three more free nights.

However, I think it would be a mistake to join a yacht club merely for the reciprocal . Some yacht clubs have significant initiation and monthly dues. More importantly, a yacht club can offer a gathering place for like-minded people to participate in the sport of their choice, share camaraderie, perhaps enjoy a meal or a beverage. Even though we have been cruising for four years now, I still treasure my membership and continue to stay in close touch with many members of my club.

without a long waiting list (3 years plus!!). Next challenge is the size of your vessel. Most yacht clubs will not have facilities to accommodate a 65ft vessel except perhaps at a . I also remember that when I was a YC member, reciprocity was not generally available, and if it was, it was usually only between like (think membership fee/location) clubs.

Yacht Clubs of America Reciprocity

Bill Michaels

Understanding Yacht Clubs

Yacht clubs are organizations that are dedicated to promoting and facilitating yachting activities. They are places where yacht owners and enthusiasts can come together to share their passion for sailing, boating, and other water sports. Yacht clubs are known for their exclusive nature, as they are often viewed as a symbol of luxury and prestige. These clubs offer a wide range of amenities, including docks, clubhouses, dining facilities, and other recreational opportunities.

The History of Yacht Clubs

The history of yacht clubs dates back to the 17th century when the first yacht club was established in Venice, Italy. The first yacht club in America was established in 1844 in New York City. Since then, yacht clubs have become a popular destination for yacht owners and enthusiasts around the world. Today, there are thousands of yacht clubs in America alone, each with its unique history and culture.

The Benefits of Joining a Yacht Club

Joining a yacht club comes with a range of benefits. Firstly, yacht clubs provide a sense of community and camaraderie among members, creating opportunities to meet and socialize with like-minded individuals. Secondly, yacht clubs offer access to exclusive facilities, such as docks, clubhouses, and other recreational amenities that are not available to the general public. Additionally, yacht clubs provide educational opportunities for members, such as sailing lessons and navigation courses, allowing members to improve their skills and knowledge about yachting.

What is Reciprocity?

Reciprocity refers to the practice of allowing members of one yacht club to use the facilities of another yacht club. This practice is common among yacht clubs, and it allows members to enjoy yachting activities even when they are far from their home club. Reciprocity agreements are typically established between clubs that are located in the same geographic region or have similar membership requirements.

How Reciprocity Works

When a member of a yacht club visits another club that has a reciprocal agreement with their home club, they are allowed to use the facilities of the visiting club. This includes access to docks, clubhouses, and other recreational amenities. The visiting member is expected to follow the rules and regulations of the host club, and they may be required to pay a fee for using the facilities.

The Benefits of Reciprocity

Reciprocity agreements provide many benefits for members of yacht clubs. Firstly, they allow members to continue enjoying yachting activities even when they are traveling away from their home club. Secondly, reciprocity agreements allow members to experience the unique cultures and facilities of other yacht clubs, broadening their horizons and exposing them to new experiences. Lastly, reciprocity agreements promote cooperation and friendship between yacht clubs, strengthening the community of yachting enthusiasts.

Yacht clubs in America have established reciprocity agreements with each other to provide their members with access to a variety of facilities and experiences. The Yacht Clubs of America (YCA) is an organization that facilitates these agreements between clubs. The YCA was established in 1922 and has been promoting cooperation and friendship among yacht clubs ever since.

The Benefits of YCA Reciprocity

The YCA offers many benefits to its members, including access to a network of over 700 yacht clubs across America. Members of YCA-affiliated clubs can use the facilities of other member clubs, allowing them to enjoy yachting activities wherever they go. Additionally, the YCA provides educational opportunities for members, such as seminars and workshops on yachting-related topics.

How to Use YCA Reciprocal Privileges

To use YCA reciprocal privileges, members must present their membership card and a letter of introduction from their home club to the club they wish to visit. The visiting member is expected to follow the rules and regulations of the host club and may be required to pay a fee for using the facilities.

Yacht clubs are an important part of the yachting community, providing members with exclusive access to facilities and experiences. Reciprocity agreements between yacht clubs allow members to enjoy yachting activities even when they are far from their home club. The Yacht Clubs of America facilitates these agreements between clubs, providing members with access to a network of over 700 clubs across America. Reciprocity agreements promote cooperation and friendship between yacht clubs, strengthening the community of yachting enthusiasts. Whether you are a seasoned yachting enthusiast or just starting, joining a yacht club and taking advantage of reciprocity agreements can enhance your yachting experience.

On the trail of the Vikings in Veliky Novgorod

yachting club of america reciprocity

Veliky Novgorod (589 kilometers from Moscow and often referred to simply as “Novgorod”) was for many centuries the most important commercial hub in Eastern Europe, having developed relations with German and Scandinavian cities, the Black Sea region and with Muslim centers of the East. A unique political system emerged here that was republican at its core. Novgorod was fortunately spared a Mongol invasion and its development was not stunted by the catastrophic destruction that afflicted ancient Rus’, whose largest cities were turned to ashes.

From the Varangians to Rus’

yachting club of america reciprocity

The Vikings sailed great distances for more than just plunder: in the ninth century Novgorod’s rivers were part of a major trading route “from the Varangians to the Greeks.” Byzantine merchants preferred traveling along this route and traded in the cities located along its river banks, as in the hinterland merchants could fall prey to murderous bandits and thieves. The demand for warriors that could guarantee the security of overseas guests and these thriving cities was enormous. The Vikings had no equals in the art of war and were welcomed. Therefore many offered their services to a Slavic ruler, settled down here and became citizens of Rus’.

The ancient capital

yachting club of america reciprocity

According to another version, outlined in the “Tale of Bygone Years” (the 12th century Russian chronicles and the oldest that have survived), it was Novgorod’s inhabitants themselves who asked Rurik to be their ruler and establish order during a difficult period of internecine fighting. As a result, in the ninth century Rurik reached the banks of the Volkhov River with a small group of warriors and founded a settlement there whose traces can still be seen 13 kilometers from Novgorod.

On the right bank of the Volkhov River there is a towering hill. This is all that’s left of Rurik’s ancient settlement, the residence of the first Russian ruling dynasty, the Rurikids. The city of Novgorod was later christened as the “New City” (Novy Gorod in Russian) to differentiate itself from this older outpost. This small hill today is covered by green grass. However, in the 10th century wooden streets could be found here, the first ones to appear in ancient Rus’.

In the 12th century it was on this hill that the Annunciation Cathedral was built, while on the opposite bank of the river a cathedral was built in honor of St. George, becoming the main church of the Yuriev Monastery. The sparkle of the two sanctuaries’ domes welcomed guests coming to Novgorod’s land from the northern direction of Lake Ilmen. Today all that’s left of the Annunciation Cathedral are some picturesque ruins. But if you come here by boat (the river is open to navigation from May to September), it’s not difficult to imagine the prince sailing on a light “ladya” boat towards his town and being welcomed by the ringing bells of the two cathedrals.

It is worth going to the local museum-reserve to inspect the personal correspondence of Novgorod’s citizenry dating back to the 11th-12th centuries. Such sentences are common: “buy butter, buy clothes for your children and let your son learn to read and write;” “so let your heart and your soul burn of passion when you see me;” or “send me the money, even if you don’t send money to Svenya, send money to me.” These correspondences allow visitors to practically look through the keyhole of an ancient city.

If you want to do more than just read about the days of old, then go to the small town of Staraya Russa (about 100 kilometers from Novgorod), on Aug. 8 to attend the festival of early medieval culture “Knyazhia Bratchina.” For a couple of days you can pretend to be Rurik or a Viking guard before returning to reality with a Varangian sword as a souvenir.
