Seller's Description

North American 23 (aka Spirit 23) For Sale Great daysailer or weekender. $4800

This is a great 23 foot swing keel sloop with trailer. Lots of room, both in the cockpit and down below. Long cockpit can easily accommodate 4 people, and the cabin easily sleeps 4. Its also very easy to single hand. All sails are still crisp and in good shape. Includes multiple headsails, Genoa, Jib, and Storm Jib, as well as a symmetrical spinnaker. All cushions including cockpit cushions were reupholstered in 2017. New mainsheet and jibsheets in 2018. New wood tiller in 2018. Tiller extension. New deep cycle battery in 2020. Nice lightweight Fortress anchor. 6hp Tohatsu outboard, only 5-6 years old, starts easy every time. Under the companion way is a pull-out galley with sink and butane stove. The cockpit has one very large lazarette storage locker. Trailer has a tounge extension to make launching and retrieving easy.

The North American 23 was build by Glastron between 1976 and 1981, also known as a Spirit 23 (name changed in 1978). It was designed by Robert Finch, who was also responsible for the very popular Catalina 27.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

North American Yachts was a division of Glastron, one of the largest builders of powerboats in the US. Later known as the SPIRIT 23.

Review of north american 23

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

CentreBoard

The north american 23 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.61 - 0.71 meter (2.00 - 2.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for north american 23 is 2.24, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for north american 23 is about 98 kg/cm, alternatively 551 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 98 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 551 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 18m 2 (193 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

about 10 years and recently had a vacation in both the fresh and salt waters around The Netherlands traveling about 400 nautical miles. Usually we sail every year a total of 800-900 nautical miles. The boat is very practical for us allowing us to sail in both deeper and shallow waters. We still have the original main sail with the NA symbol on it. The front sail has been renewed and replaced with a rol sail. I do not know the names of these parts in English. We consider the inside of the boat to be very practical especially since our boys used to always sail with us when they were small. We recently bought a new Yamaha 8 HP 4-stroke electrical start outboard engine. On our recent vacation in the boat we met another North American owner who gave us the tip to look at this internet site. We enjoyed looking at the site.

. I think I will re-do it again with core mat instead of wood. Please let me know where can I send some pictures.

) for a year, having purchased her from another Poole Yacht Club member, he always raced her and did very well. We are dinghy racing sailors and bought Despirit to cruise and we love her. I will put some information and some pictures together and send them to you in the near future.

William,
I am glad to find your site.  A few years ago I purchased my first sailboat.  A 1978 North American 23.  I have found the information on your page a tremendous help.  I have attached a couple of images of my 23.  Some general information on my boat.  I bought the boat in Knoxville Iowa in 2001 for $3,100.  The boat had been sitting for about 4 years.  It needed a great deal of TLC.  I have rewired the whole boat, had the interior cushions rebuilt and reupholstered, reworked all of the teak, and just generally cleaned and waxed it up.  I love the boat and have no complaints with it.  I have been sailing the boat on for the past 2 years.
   Thanks again,   Destry

Here is a on Lake Clinton. Thanks for your help with the drawing of the chainplate attachment. Our port side attachment failed, and I reinforced with a new support. I'm glad I found your web page. It has been very helpfull.

" and I've made a point of putting it on our favourites list. We fell in love with the boat as soon as we saw her and can't wait to get out on her in the North Sea.  We also thought the pop top was a good idea (any photos). There is quite a history to her. She was brought over here by an American sailor who worked on submarines in the Firth of Fourth. He was called Jo and his wife Anna, hence JOANNA. The boat was sold because they  unfortunately divorced and it was part of the settlement. It was then bought by a lovely couple called Cameron and Alana who have had her for 18yrs sailing the beautiful west coast of Scotland. We have not met, but Cameron has been good enough to send us lots of info about her.
    Love the site

was very big. I bought my boat in 1987 in Maggiore's Lake in north Italy and payed it 6.500 dollars. now my sail is Andora's arbour in Ligure sea. it is a very fast sail boat, and it doesn't fear the sea, it's very comfortable, safe, most of all beautiful. I had a very big problem: water came in from the windows, and so the bulkhead near the washstand has been roted, because of the listing of the boat water came in also in the cockpit, the mast has broken at the base of the cross. but the real big problem is that after 4 years of lake without protection now there is a problem of osmose. so I send you a photo so you can see the situation (editor's note: removed the photo showing the blisters on the hull at Riccardo's request and replaced it with the photo to the left). great hugs for all of you, happy owners of NA23.

We "bought" our Spirit 23 from a friend for $1.00 back in 2002. It came from Lake Lanier, Georgia. "Missing Piece" is now sailed on the Severn River in Maryland, several miles north of Annapolis. Her hull was in decent shape, but much of the deck hardware needed rebedding. The starboard jib-block track was the worst. I had to completely remove the soggy plywood coring from below and replace it with new wood that I sealed with epoxy before installing. I rebedded the track and it hasn't leaked since. The windows also leaked every time it rained. A previous owner had tried to seal them with polysulfide, which had dried out and degraded the plastic frames. After removing and cleaning them up, I rebedded them with Dow Corning 795 silicone, which has worked well. She still has the original main and also came with a working jib, genoa, and asymmetrical spinnaker. Reaching with the chute is a great ride. Concerning the boat name, the hull has "Spirit23" detailing on the rear quarters and the maker's plate mounted inside the cabin says "North American." She was built in 1979.

Cheers, Jeff and Jenelle Piepmeier

. The two of me standing on the boat were taken in the harbor of Victoria, BC with their Parliament Building in the background. I've owned the boat for 3 years and kept it at the Boston Harbor Marina in Olympia, WA. In the summer of 2004 I took a trip up the full length of the Puget Sound in Washington State, over to Victoria and then back to Olympia. I have moved and now keep the boat in the Kirkland, WA marina, across from Seattle on Lake Washington.

with dodger and sail bag, etc. It is still a good looking boat after all these years. Thanks again for the site--I just passed it on to a friend of mine which brought me back to it once more....

in shape, I expend many hours in the boat and still need a thousand hours more, but that’s it´s the fun part. Since I have this 23, my first, I and my friends sailing all the peninsula Yucatán shore, have many adventures and fun. We compete in local regattas and in this year we have first place. I hope someday can have in shape like others In this page.

Calling All North American Spirit 23 Owners

If we get enough action here we may get our own Thread, but these beautiful boats are few & far between.!!

My Boat I have a 79 pop top version with a swing keel I'm restoring here in Surrey BC. Lets hear from other owners.

23 north american sailboat

Post some pictures, windy! 2 more posts and you'll be allowed.

All pictures I have are on the hard, as I've yet to set her afloat. The bottom looks like it has the pox right now & it's too cold to fill with epoxy, so the hull is basically waiting & drying out a just little more (it's been out of the water for a few years) Pressure wash this weekend I hope.

I had one 15 years ago in Ft. Myers, Fl. Loved it, 5 sails with spinniker. Pop top, step mast by my self. Built custom trailer for it. I missed her untill I get my Offshore 33 sloop.

Great I bought my 79 Spirit last summer and have spent most of the winter doing a little restoration. If I can I will post some pictures. I found some bad core around the deck but a little west systems fixed it right up SLOW FLIGHT

.How did you find the soft core around the deck & where

Hey I just got one of these; for the life of me I can't figure out how to hook up the mainsheet. It looks like there is a spot for it to attach about 1/2 way down the boom, but I don't see any coresponding point on the boat to attach to. there are two eyes on the transom one on each side of the tiller inbetween where the backstays attach. Of the few pictures I can find on the Internet some are at the back of the boom, but I can't get a good look. Some attach mid boom and have some kind of track in the middle of the cockpit (no evidence anything like this was ever installed on my boat.) and most seem to be at anchor with the main sheet removed entirely. Would one of you please be so kind as to educate me on this.

Steve; PM me your email address & I'll send you some pictures of mine.

Hold on

It looks like

I have to

Have 5 posts to do that.

How about that. There are actually some Spirits still floating. I had one for 10 years and sailed it primarily on Lake Lanier, GA but took it to the Abacos, Bahamas on several occasions. Sailed out of West Palm. I made extensive mods for ocean sailing. Changed out the flimsy 3" mast with a 5" off a Catalina 25, added extra rudder gudgeons that I custom built from SS plate because the original broke away on the 1st crossing and I had to use the dining table as a rudder, moved the mainsheet to mid-boom with a traveller mounted just aft of the companionway. It was a great little boat and served me well. Saved my life when I got into that nasty storm in late October '81 that killed 5 people on the 40' Trashman and 54' Vera. 40 foot seas and 50K winds but she never faltered and pushed on for 16hrs. Sustained no damage at all, thanks to the mods I had made. Otherwise, I'm sure I would have also joined the ranks of stupid sailors who tried to make crossings in late October in the face of a Nor'easter and ended up as dinner for sharks. In spite of all the havoc, I managed to keep my log updated every 2 hours. It is a very interesting read. I have hundreds of pics put I'll have to find them and scan them in.

Floating Spirit 23 WOW!! That is awesome lionshooter. It gives me more faith in my boat for sure! I'm just going thru sea trials right now & have only launched her twice. Hopefully all issues are corrected & will be able to enjoy her more fully. That swing keel needed some more thought for sure. I ended up mounting a pulley in the keel pocket for the cable to work correctly.

That seemed a little pointless.. but anyways. Just picked up this little boat on the MS Coast for 500$ w/ trailer. had to patch 2 little holes, but she's about ready to be back in the water. Sails, All Rigging in good shape, Interior is there, but it's 30 years old, so thats the next step. Need a front hatch and don't want to pay some guy 300$ for it, since that's almost as much as I have in it. Anybody got one laying around? Or a rudder template? Here's a link to some pics I have right now. Some of it on the coast and after we fixed the trailer and dragged it back home. Paul Sims's Photos - Work in Progress.. | Facebook

Sweet deal. Brings back a lot of good memories of Lorilei. She was my 1st and I am still in love with her.

I thought my deal at $1,000 was a good one. Yours seems to be in better shape than mine was. I also have the same trailer, I wonder if SHORELINE trailers was the standard trailer these boats were sold with??

Great Boat. I got mine finished this spring. She (slow flight) was a great winter project. I added teak and holly sole and floor grates in the cockpit new upolstery in the cabin. Yhe big project was fixing the fiberglass on the deck and resealing all the deck fittings. SHES GREAT TO SAIL steve

Thanks, she needs some work, but is coming right along. From what I can tell Shoreline is the original trailer, or at least that what the original paperwork I have says. Original title say $13986.00, from 1979. I think I got a little better deal than the first owner. ha Any ideas on where to dig up a fiberglass from hatch, don't know how I feel about the smoked glass ones... just don't seem quite as strong.

Count me in for the thread We bought a '79 Spirit 23 Poptop @ the beginning of this summer & we love it. (We bought ours in Ft. Myers Beach & it remains docked there) It's a great, comfortable beginner's weekender - it's easy to sail & way faster than, for example, a friend's Hunter 22. We hung a Nissan 8 HP 2 stroke on the stern which moves the sloop very well. Let us know if there's anything we can do to help this effort.

Here's a few pics of WindyWay on the water; I've since lowered the engine & added a stainless transom ladder.

Lesson Learned Windy Way looks great. Really like the dark windows, I'm definitely going to have to do that. Lesson for the day: Check for rot in the bulkheads, Had my port, side stay foot almost out through the deck this weekend. The bolts ripped all the way up to the deck completely splintering the wood inside the cabin. Luckily one of the bolts caught it or I would have demasted the boat. The urethane finish on the inside can be deceiving, be sure to check. Could have been a major disaster, but i guess thats part of buying a 500$ boat.. But man she was moving, making the Hunters and Catalina's that were racing look stupid. ha

  1. NORTH AMERICAN 23

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
