The magnificent Port Vell base of Alinghi Red Bull Racing was tonight, the hottest ticket in Barcelona for friends, family, sponsors and dignitaries from Spain and around the world for the ‘reveal’ and roll-out of the AC75 that the whole of Switzerland is hoping will bring the two-time winners more glory at the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing Unveiling AC75 BoatOne in Barcelona April 5, 2024

With the Alinghi Red Bull Racing bell – a huge brass bell engraved with the team logo that they use for every dock-out – tolling the arrival of ‘BoatOne’ as she slid from her shed under the spotlights, with scenic music and faux-smoke, this was classic Swiss dramatism at its very best.

alinghi yacht

To ooh’s and aah’s from the assembled crowd and hundreds peering over the fence to get a first look as the hull form came into slow view, what was revealed was a dead straight, ultra-slender bow profile leading the way back to a long, tapered bustle trailing all the way aft along the centreline and ending right in the stern beneath the communications tower. In the dark and the dramatic smoke, it was tough to see precisely the form, and the suspicion is more bulbous forward before the taper aft, but this will all be revealed in the coming days. The aggressive flaring of the deck off the bustle is key for the expected wavy conditions in Barcelona with the aim of promoting super-fast flight.

alinghi yacht

The bow detail is interesting with what look like ‘bumps’ just aft of the stem which could be used to capitalise on the ‘Venturi’ effect and send air molecules upwards to the jib creating greater pressure along the foot or could simply be there for volume to help lift the boat after a nosedive – remember this boat is the product of thousands of hours of computer simulation and airflow work and the detailing will be extraordinary.

alinghi yacht

The big news though was saved for last as BoatOne revealed its cut-away cockpit at the stern leaving a good 10 feet of open area and just carbon sidewalls that abruptly end. The rule change for the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup means no backstays so weight reduction here is paramount and with the crew-members, now down to just eight, not crossing as they did in the last competition, their concentration is all around the foil area. Expect to see the team continue with inboard cyclors and just two pod positions either side for the two helms and two trimmers – again to be confirmed when BoatOne has its official launch in the coming weeks.

alinghi yacht

The shot of the night however was, with the boat fully out from the shed, a team of acrobats from the renowned Catalan urban theatre troupe, La Fura Dels Baus, mesmerizing the audience with their interpretation of ‘human sails’ on the AC75 – just incredible to witness.

alinghi yacht

A fantastic evening for the hard-charging Swiss and the body language of the team members as they filed smartly onto the base in team uniform was one of unity and excitement. Alinghi Red Bull Racing know that they are right in the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup and ‘BoatOne’ looks fast. The devil will be in the detail.

alinghi yacht

As the late, great multiple-winning America’s Cup designer, Olin Stephens, once said: “If a boat looks fast, she normally is.” Expectations are, quite rightly, rising at Alinghi Red Bull Racing.  (Magnus Wheatley)

Announcing the launch, Alinghi Red Bull Racing posted:

You get one opportunity to make a first impression, and Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s BoatOne certainly made the most of it!

In front of special guests, friends, Team Members and local Barcelona dignitaries at the Team Base in Barcelona on Friday night, the Swiss-built AC75 that will challenge for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup later this year was unveiled publicly.

BoatOne was the star of the night, emerging slowly from the shed shrouded in a fog of smoke. The renowned Catalan urban theatre troupe, La Fura Dels Baus, mesmerized the audience with their interpretation of “human sails” on the AC75.

The crowd that was gathered celebrated the first racing boat among the America’s Cup entries to be presented.

After the festive unveiling, the AC75 will have her final preparations for the Boat Christening in the next days, which will be followed by the excitement of her first sail out on the water.

Recon Report – Alinghi Red Bull Racing:  Alinghi Red Bull Racing rolled out their BOAT_ONE AC75 for the first time this evening during an unveiling ceremony at the team’s base in Port Vell, Barcelona – making the Swiss boat the first of the latest generation AC75s to be revealed in the 37th America’s Cup cycle.

Following a single resonant toll on the team’s large bell the new boat emerged from the shed at just after 2100 to applause from team members and guests on the forecourt and on three spectator large spectator boats.

Darkness, smoke, and multicolour light show made it hard to identify much about the nuances of the boat’s design, but, besides a fine bow entry profile which appeared to flare quickly as you go aft, the most noticeable design elements were a very deep rounded bustle that runs all the way to the transom of the boat, and its slab sides that are cut away at the back leaving a wide open expanse of aft deck.

Our vantage point outside the team base was not elevated enough to see down onto the deck. As far as the boat’s appendages were concerned, the foils were encased in protective covers so hidden from view, but the T-foil rudder was on display, with no surprises in its shape compared to what we have seen before.

After the completion of a dramatic aerial ballet that saw around 40 harnessed acrobats suspended above the Swiss AC75 the boat was rolled back into the shed at around 2120.

America's Cup : First Cupper unveiled - Alinghi comeback complete

 ·  08.04.2024

The first racing yacht for the upcoming 37th America's Cup sees the light of day in the darkness of Barcelona: Alinghi's "BoatOne"

It is a special moment when "BoatOne" emerges from the hall on Friday evening shrouded in thick fog. Around a year and a half after Alinghi became the first team to set up in the Barcelona Cup area, it is also the 2003 and 2007 Cup winners who are the first to present a new boat.

  • Alinghi on course for the America's Cup: racing against the clock with "BoatZero" in Barcelona
  • America's Cup Team Base: Comeback after 13 years - the Swiss show off their headquarters

With the deep bustle and the open, flat stern, the most striking features are quickly recognised despite the difficult lighting conditions at the launch. This is because the Swiss-built AC75 is a further development of the winning yacht from the last 36th America's Cup. With "Te Rehutai", the New Zealanders dominated the racing off Auckland back then. Used as a training and development platform, the foiling monohull has already shone in the current cycle.

A logical approach for all teams will have been to adapt the design of "Te Rehutai" to the conditions off Barcelona and to make it even faster within the framework of the current regulations. Consequently, the Swiss team has significantly enlarged the so-called bustle on the underwater hull, especially towards the stern. It is deeper, much more voluminous and has a further gradation, a bustle on the bustle, so to speak. Also known as a skeg, these undercarriages were also seen on the British team in 2021 and serve neither to prevent drift nor as ballast. Instead, the wetted surface and thus the frictional resistance of the hull should be reduced as quickly as possible during take-off, while still providing sufficient lift and thus stability.

This "long keel" also acts as a partition during the flight phase. It is driven as close to the water surface as possible and thus prevents pressure equalisation between the windward and leeward side under the hull. This has the same effect as the foresail and mainsail resting on the deck.

Is "BoatOne" immune to Nosedives?

Especially in the demanding waves off the coast of the Catalan capital, which can be up to two metres high in racing conditions, this can be crucial for getting through the waves well or getting back on the foils quickly after a splashdown. If the conditions are particularly rough, "BoatOne" can also be flown a little lower without any problems. The Bustle doesn't slow down much when it dives into individual waves or slides across the water, but immediately provides some lift and stability.

In such conditions, nosedives are always a problem for flying cuppers. In addition to weight savings and aerodynamic advantages, this could have been one reason why the cockpit capsules for the crew on both sides of the hull, which previously extended all the way to the stern, end abruptly well in front of the transom on "BoatOne". The "wings" move slightly towards the centre of the ship in order to ensure that the flow around the hull is as turbulence-free as possible. This was largely made possible by the space gained due to the reduction in the number of crew from twelve to eight sailors in the rules for the 37th America's Cup. The use of cyclists is also permitted again and is expected by many teams.

  • America's Cup: The cyclists are back

The completely flat stern eliminates volume in this area, whereby the bow section appears somewhat more voluminous at the same time due to bulges that form a nozzle in the direction of the headsail. The Alinghi Cupper should therefore take off better, provided the stern does not get stuck, which in turn should be ensured by the bustle, and also have less of an urge to dive forwards into the wave.

More revelations expected for the 37th America's Cup - will the New Zealanders land a late coup?

However, the foils will play a decisive role in the battle for the world's oldest sporting trophy. While the rudder holds nothing surprising in store, the main foils have not yet been unveiled. Instead, they were covered by a bulky protective cover at the unveiling and will probably be kept out of the public eye for as long as possible. This is because, as with the Cupper itself, only one set of wings may be built, which will then be used in all conditions. A difficult and pioneering design decision that must be perfectly tailored to the area. Because from a purely sailing point of view, several foils would undoubtedly make sense. However, in order to contain costs, this is not permitted. According to Dr Martin Fischer, Chief Designer at Ineos-Britannia and foil expert, a set of AC75 foils costs three to three and a half million euros with replacement foils.

  • Interview with Dr Martin Fischer: "There is no such thing as the perfect foil" - how airfoils work

After the ceremonial unveiling, including a performance by the renowned Catalan theatre group La Fura Dels Baus as a human sail, Alinghi's America's Cupper will nevertheless be prepared for the boat's christening and the first tests in the water over the next few days.

Further unveilings are expected at the same time. In addition to the racing yacht from INEOS Britannia, the French AC75 from the Orient-Express Team and American Magic's Cupper have also arrived in Barcelona well packed. Luna Rossa has announced that it will present its boat for the 37th America's Cup to the public on 13 April. Only the defenders from Emirates Team New Zealand are still unknown some six months before the first starting signal.

America’s Cup Team: Alinghi Red Bull Racing

alinghi yacht

Photo: Alinghi Red Bull Racing media

Ernesto Bertarelli’s team, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, is making a return to the America’s Cup scene in 2024 after a long break. The Swiss team, then just named Alinghi, won the America’s Cup in 2003 and then completed a successful defence in 2007.

Team Name: Alinghi Red Bull Racing Yacht club: Société Nautique de Genève Skipper: Hans Peter Steinacher (AUT)

Alinghi’s win in 2003 was famous for several reasons. It was the first time that a European team had won the America’s Cup and the first time a team had won the Cup on their first attempt.

However, they achieved this second point by employing many key members of the winning Team New Zealand side from the previous Cup, causing a significant amount of bad-blood between the teams and sailors.

Another serious falling out followed their 2007 win when a serious disagreement around the rules for the 2011 America’s Cup saw Alinghi taken to court by Larry Ellison and his BMW Oracle team.

The result of a protracted legal battle between the two teams was the 2010 America’s Cup, held between Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing in a Deed of Gift match that saw the teams fight it out in huge multihulls.

BMW Oracle won the contest and Alinghi stepped away from America’s Cup racing. Their return is a welcome one and their Cup history alongside their partnership with Red Bull Racing should see them a solid challenge from the off.

AC37: Challenger Alinghi Red Bull enters America's Cup regatta

Related articles.

A name that has not been part of the America’s Cup series for over a decade will be returning as a new Challenger in the form of the Alinghi Red Bull sailing team.

Red Bull has partnered up with the Alinghi syndicate, which races under the flag of Switzerland’s Société Nautique de Genève. Despite representing a land-locked country, the Alinghi team has won the America's Cup twice – in 2003 in New Zealand and in 2007 in Spain.

"While keeping the winning spirit that has always animated Alinghi, we want for this challenge to do something totally different, totally new, totally fresh," said Alinghi team founder Ernesto Bertarelli.

“With Red Bull we are equal partners in this venture. They will bring their competence, energy and strength in creating performing teams, and we bring our experience in sailing and winning the America's Cup. Alinghi Red Bull Racing will shine a new light on the event," Bertarelli added.

The Alinghi sailing team will benefit from the expertise of the Red Bull Advanced Technologies unit that has powered Red Bull Racing to a total of five Formula One Drivers' Championships and four F1 Constructors' Championships, including the win just secured by Max Verstappen in the last lap of 2021 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Fresh from the Formula One final, Red Bull Racing principal Christian Horner commented on the partnership: "We welcome Alinghi Red Bull Racing to the World of Red Bull, and our F1 team is looking forward to helping this new member of our family to succeed […] We will share our experiences, engineering tips, etc. It is a two-way cooperation."

The new America’s Cup team will establish its headquarters in Écublens in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Located on the fringes of Lake Geneva, this site will be where the hull of the team’s vessel is to be constructed.

The crew of Alinghi Red Bull will be made entirely of Swiss sailors, led by Alinghi's GC32 coskipper Arnaud Psarofaghis and mainsail trimmer Bryan Mettraux who will begin training during the winter period.

Alinghi Red Bull joins fellow Challengers INEOS Britannia from the UK against Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in a bid to win the oldest sports trophy in the world. In 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand triumphed against Italian Challenger Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli to win the 36th America's Cup.

More challengers are expected to be announced in the coming months as the entry period runs until July 31, 2022. The final America’s Cup regatta will be held in 2024, with the venue and event dates to be announced by the end of March 2022.

In a statement released on social media, Silvio Arrivabene, Co-General Manager of Alinghi Red Bull Racing confirmed that all the team members were safe and the boat had been safely returned to their dock in the Port Vell under tow: “Today there was a rig failure during the early stage of training on BoatOne. Everybody onboard is safe, and an investigation will be carried out in due course. In the meantime, the team remains fully focused on racing.”

This is the second rig failure that the Swiss team have had to endure with a breakage occurring on 13 June whilst in training.

Conditions today saw a southerly breeze coming down the Barceloneta beachfront with a mean of 12 knots and a calm sea state – according to Predict Wind.

The fact that Alinghi Red Bull Racing ‘remains fully focussed on racing’ is a good indicator that the team have a contingency plan in place and the entire community of the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup wishes the Swiss team a speedy return to action.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing are scheduled to feature in the first race of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta against Orient Express Racing Team on Thursday August 22 at 14:00 CET.

BARCELONA, Spain — The world's oldest international sports trophy, best yachtsmen and cutting-edge design and technology will come together in Barcelona when the 37th edition of the America’s Cup starts on Thursday.

Five boats – from Italy, the United States, Britain, Switzerland and France – will spend the coming weeks racing in the Mediterranean waves to decide which will earn the honor of trying to dethrone the almighty Emirates Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug.

As the two-time defender, the Kiwis chose Barcelona’s choppy waters as the venue and helped establish the rules and boat design for this edition. They also get a guaranteed spot in the final to be held in October.

The results of three years of work and massive investment will now be put to the test.

“It is starting to get serious in a hurry. We are now racing for keeps,” Ben Ainslie, skipper of British team INEOS Britannia, said Wednesday.

Here is what else you need to know about the equivalent of the World Cup of sailing.

Sci-fi Boats

For anyone who has not followed the foiling revolution in sailing over the past decade, America's Cup yachts look more like something designed to fly through outer space in a sci-fi film than a traditional sailboat.

The only parts more or less recognizable are the rudder, mast, mainsail and jib on the foiling 75-foot monohull that the champions chose as the boat type for these regattas. This AC75 is an evolution of the 2021 monohulls, which were a radical leap from the catamarans that the same New Zealand team sailed to victory in 2017.

If you are looking for a skipper standing tall at the helm while sailors scamper around the deck, then forget it. The helmeted crew members are tucked into cockpits, keeping them out of the wind and favoring the boats' aerodynamics.

But the most remarkable feature of these boats are the two hydrofoils, attached to winglike appendages port and starboard, that make these boats look like giant water strider insects. The foils enable these wonders of nautical engineering to spend more time with the bottom of their hulls above the water than submerged while racing. Their “T” shape resembles the inverted tail of an orca whale, and their 4.5-meter span sustains the more than six-ton boat as it rockets over the water at 50 knots per hour (92 kph/57.5 mph).

All the teams have two helmsmen for this race – copying a move made by the Italian Luna Rossa team three years ago. The two helmsmen take turns steering and watching the other's blind spot since each one has half his visibility cut off by the sails. There are also two trimmers.

Gone this time are the grinders. Instead, each boat has four cyclists, called “cyclors” — many of whom are world-class rowers — who pedal away to power the hydraulic mechanisms needed to trim the sails and rotate the mast.

The Defender

Emirates Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in 1995 and 2000 before winning the last two editions.

They are without a doubt the team to beat.

The team led by Grant Dalton has earned the respect of their rivals for their daring boat designs and flawless execution. They will participate in the opening round, but their points won’t count. They will then sit out the next two rounds while the remaining teams duke it out to see which will meet them in the final.

Peter Burling is back at the helm after helping the team win in 2017 and 2021. He is joined by fellow Olympic medalist Nathan Outteridge in steering their super-sleek Taihoro yacht.

“The challenger group is the strongest it has been in a long time at the America’s Cup,” Burling said. “It is going to be super exciting to see what happens over the next weeks.”

The Challengers

— Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team reached the last final in 2021 — and lost 7-3. The team representing the Sicily Yacht Club is steered by helmsmen Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni.

— INEOS Britannia is hoping to end Britain’s painfully long search for a title. No team has challenged as many times as the British, a losing streak which started back in 1851 when they were bettered by the schooner America in a race around the Isle of Wight. INEOS is led by helmsman and Olympic great Ainslie and is supported by the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

— NYYC American Magic is back after its 2021 campaign ended shortly after its Patriot boat capsized and almost sank. The New York Yacht Club draws on the history of having won the first edition and then successfully defending the title 24 times until that incredible 132-year run ended in 1983. It's helmed by Tom Slingsby, the sailor of the year, an Australian who has an American passport thanks to his American mother, and Englishman Paul Goodison, a fellow Olympic gold medalist.

__ Alinghi Red Bull Racing is backed by the sports drink giant and its F1 team. The Swiss outfit is seeking a title after the landlocked nation won the cup in 2003 and 2007. It has been training in Barcelona the longest after setting up base here two years ago.

__ Orient Express Racing Team comes with a boat based on a design it purchased from the New Zealand team. The last team to arrive in Barcelona, the French face the extra challenge of having less on-site practice time.

A round-robin stage will eliminate the weakest challenger by Sept. 8. The remaining four will have two playoff series to decide which boat will take on New Zealand in a best-of-13 series starting on Oct. 12.

This year’s event also includes a new Women’s America’s Cup and a youth competition.

The Race Course

The racing will take place in the same stretch of water used for the sailing events at the 1992 Olympics.

Boats zigzag back and forth across a rectangular race course located in waters just off the Barcelona beachfront, within view of fans on the shore. Boats have to pass through a pair of buoys – called a gate – and perform hairpin turns by shifting from one foil to the other.

Several teams have said that Barcelona’s waters can produce trickier race conditions than, for example, Auckland, since there is no natural bay to stop the wave action that comes from far offshore and often goes in a direction off-angle from the wind.

Race starts are crucial as boats maneuver to be in a leading position when they hit the starting line.

In choosing Spain, New Zealand broke with its tradition of picking Auckland as this edition’s venue because of the need to ensure a big payday. And what better place to ensure people would flock to see the event than one of Europe’s major Mediterranean destinations?

The last regatta in New Zealand was held when the world was still in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. That meant there were scant crowds and little of the glamor – think superyachts and wealthy sailing amateurs — who are expected to be back en masse at Barcelona. Fashion and luxury goods designer Louis Vuitton has returned as the official sponsor of the race, and the trophy is secured in a custom Louis Vuitton case when it travels.

Barcelona calculates the event will attract some 2.5 million tourists and leave over a billion euros in the city. It is being held during an upsurge in citizen complaints against what they consider “overtourism” and skyrocketing rents.

Luna Rossa racing Team Emirates New Zealand.

But this four-day round-robin, only good for bragging rights, is just the start of the three-month series of yacht-racing. The Louis Vuitton Cup starts Thursday and runs through October 5, when the overall winner faces New Zealand in the 10-day America’s Cup Match, ending on October 21.

If it sounds like a long season, it is. But the America’s Cup has slowly evolved from an often boring, elitist “sport” held offshore in very slow boats, into something of a tech spectacle with fast, foiling, 75-foot monohulls, called AC75s, that all have the same specs, with some modifications allowed. But not much. The idea is to make the event a more level playing field, technically and financially. Previous America’s Cups have favored the wealthiest teams that could afford technical modifications often executed in days to give an edge over competitors.

“New Zealand and Italy look really strong this year, with both strong boats and teams,” Dave Reed, editor-in-chief of Sailing World, tells Robb Report. “But the American team is also a contender. They have a really fast boat and some of the best sailors in the event.”

The US team, American Magic, and Emirates Team New Zealand.

The teams are now projecting competitive scrappiness rather than erudite sophistication, with a racecourse that encourages close encounters at speeds reaching 58 mph. But the dangers are mitigated this year, since there’s an electronic boundary around each boat that dishes out penalties to competitors that wander into their opponents’ territories.

Last week’s series, which pitted one team against another in head-to-head match races, showed flashes of brilliance and many self-inflicted errors, but also how fast and nimble the AC75s are.

The New York Yacht Club’s American Magic team, which took third place overall because of a broken rudder early in the series, beat the New Zealand Defenders soundly on the last day of racing, showing the world it was a serious contender. American Magic’s AC75, called Patriot, outdistanced the Kiwis by more than nearly 700 yards on the final stretch.  “It’s hard not to be happy, but we still got third in the series,” says Terry Hutchinson, skipper and president of American Magic. “You may win a couple of battles but don’t win the war, so you’ve got to keep the bigger picture in mind. That’s what we will do.”

UK Team Ennoy

The pundits seem to be favoring Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic as the top contenders of the Defenders, with the Swiss Alinghi Red Bull Racing, with its team of young sailors, the U.K. team INEOS and France’s Orient Express Racing, on the second tier. The Kiwis are generally seen as the Cup favorites, helped by the fact that they won’t be racing any other teams until they meet the Louis Vuitton Cup winner in the America’s Cup finals.

But the dynamics could change over the next few months as the teams become more familiar with their boats and racing conditions in the Med. Beyond a team’s racing prowess, a mechanical failure could end the hopes of any team at a critical juncture. That happened to American Magic in the 2021 Louis Vuitton series.

Team New Zealand wins the initial round robin series.

Last week’s round-robins gave a glimpse of how the next races could unfold as the five Challenger teams compete against each other. For the most part, the boats performed well through the four days, with the final day being particularly challenging, with unstable winds and a confused sea state. Most were worried about boats breaking, something that could’ve been disastrous just days away from the Louis Vuitton Cup. But the teams soldiered on with only minor technical problems, looking forward to what should be a great three months of racing.

NZ replacing part of yacht's hull after it was dropped by crane on first day of America's Cup

B ARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Emirates Team New Zealand worked on Friday to replace a piece of the hull of its yacht that was damaged in a crane incident after its first warmup race at the America’s Cup .

The mishap happened late on Thursday when the 75-foot yacht named “Taihoro” was being removed from the water after racing.

Team leader Grant Dalton said the multimillion-dollar boat fell some six meters (20 feet) onto the support cradle at their team base inside Barcelona’s old port. Dalton said the impact sounded “like a bomb went off.” The boat was eventually lifted to get the tips of its critically important hydrofoils off the concrete ground.

On Thursday, Dalton believed the repair job could keep his defending champion team sidelined throughout the double round-robin phase that lasts through next week.

But less than 24 hours later, Dalton said enough work was done overnight to give him hope they could be back on the water sooner than he expected.

“It’s possible that we could be back out by tomorrow,” the CEO of the team and race said.

“We're pretty lucky. If it had fallen 200 millimeters to either side it could have been a whole bunch worse, but it fell into the cradle, perfectly into the cradle,” he said. “The guys have literally cut out a hole, it looks like the Titanic.”

Missing any racing time is a setback, but it should be manageable as long as the boat can be refitted in the coming days or even weeks since as defending champions the Kiwis are guaranteed a spot in the finals in October.

The incident means New Zealand didn't participate in the two warmup races it was scheduled for on Friday. That won’t impact the standings since its races don’t count; they are essentially only for practice to keep the team sharp for the final.

One of those races was against INEOS Britannia, which according to the rules had to start the race even though its rival couldn't.

“We were obviously very worried that someone had gotten hurt initially, so we are very happy that everyone was safe,” INEOS helmsman Dylan Fletcher told The Associated Press about how he saw the Kiwis' crane incident.

“You don’t really wish anyone to have bad luck or anything like that to go wrong because you just want to beat them because you're better.”

American Magic got its first point and handed Switzerland's Alinghi Red Bull Racing a second straight defeat after a race where both teams struggled to find wind and spent long periods of time becalmed. The race control shortened the race from six to four legs to keep it from dragging on. It still lasted 31 minutes.

“It wasn’t pretty at all. It’s just tough conditions,” American Magic helmsman Tom Slingsby said. “I would have loved to foil across the line, but we just did what we had to do to get the win.”

The light winds forced the postponement of the Americans' scheduled race against Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli later Friday.

One of the five challengers will be eliminated after the opening phase before the final four go to semifinals.

(heg/DPA)
