This New Solar-Electric Catamaran Comes With A Massive, Fold-Down Beach Club

Cosmopolitan Yachts just unveiled an electrifying new catamaran.

The simply named Cosmopolitan 125 spans, you guessed it, 125 feet, making it the largest model in the burgeoning Spanish yard’s five-strong lineup. The zero-emission newcomer is also equipped with a hybrid solar-electric propulsion system that makes it cleaner and more efficient on the high seas than traditional diesel-powered yachts of a similar size.

The 125 features a lightweight aluminum exterior and sleek, modern lines. With a focus on sustainable luxury, the cat is replete with innovative, eco-friendly materials and the latest green technologies. Solar panels have been integrated into the rooftop, for instance. The yard didn’t share exact specs but says the yacht can traverse the seas sans emission at a cruising speed of 10 knots.

Described as a floating haven by Cosmopolitan, the multihull has an impressive interior volume of 500 GT and offers nearly 6,500 square feet of deck space. The living quarters are replete with “state-of-the-art amenities and luxurious finishes,” according to the yard.

The spacious layout includes four VIP guest cabins, one owner’s suite with a private terrace, three crew cabins, and a captain’s cabin. The guest accommodation is spread across the lower and main decks, while the owner’s cabin can be positioned on either the main deck or the bridge deck. The crew quarters are located on the lower deck, along with the crew mess, galley, and laundry.

The 125 offers more than just a place to sleep, of course. The main deck is home to a large living room with a TV and game area, while the upper deck is outfitted with a giant dining area and bar. A second bar and a gym can be found on the lower deck. Alfresco lounges are positioned forward and aft, while a helipad sits on the uppermost deck.

One of the standout features of the 125 is the beach club. The innovative platform is fitted with expandable terraces that open directly over the water to transform the stern into what Cosmopolitan calls “a private waterfront resort.” The sprawling space, which affords guests direct and easy access to the sea, can be used for sunbathing, swimming, or sundowners.

Cosmopolitan Yachts was founded by Christian Braun and Iván Salas Jefferson in 2021. Based in Barcelona, the yard specializes in custom aluminum catamarans with highly efficient electric propulsion systems. The range currently includes four models ranging from 70 to 111 feet and, of course, the electrifying new 125.

Belarus Warning Update: Russia Fields New Motor Rifle Division in Kaliningrad and Conducts Joint Command Training with Belarus

The Kremlin is increasing its projection capabilities against both NATO and Belarus.

The Kremlin announced in December 2020 its decision to field a new motorized rifle division in Kaliningrad . Baltic Fleet commander Admiral Aleksandr Nosatov announced on December 7, 2020, that the Kremlin decided to reinforce the Baltic Fleet’s 11 th  Army Corps with a motorized rifle division in response to an alleged NATO military buildup near Kaliningrad. [1]  Nosatov said this new division includes one motorized rifle regiment, one artillery regiment, and one separate tank regiment.

This new division’s formation is likely still underway.  The Russian Ministry of Defense is still renovating barracks for new elements of the 11 th  Army Corps as of January 2021. [2]

The Kremlin likely began plans to form a division under the 11 th  Army Corps before 2019.  Each Russian ground forces division structurally has at least three combat units each at the brigade/regimental level. [3]  The 11 th  Army Corps had only two combat brigades before 2019. The Kremlin reinforced the 11 th  Army Corps with a tank regiment—increasing the Army Corps’ total combat units to three like other Russian ground unit divisions—in January 2019. [4]  The Kremlin likely intended the fielding of this tank regiment in 2019 to enable the creation of this division later.

The Kremlin’s military buildup in Kaliningrad poses a significant threat to NATO.  The division’s formation in Kaliningrad compliments other ongoing Russian military efforts to project against NATO from Belarus. The Kremlin likely seeks to establish a continuous Russian military presence in Belarus and has intensified efforts to do so since August 2020. [5]  The division’s formation in conjunction with Russia’s total freedom of movement in Belarus would further enhance Russian forces’ ability to threaten the Suwalki Gap and geographically isolate NATO members Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia from the rest of the alliance.

The Belarusian Ministry of Defense (MoD) began Russian-Belarusian joint headquarters training for the Russian-Belarusian "Regional Grouping of Forces’" (RGV) Joint Command in Minsk on February 8, 2021. [6]   Unspecified Belarusian and Russian defense personnel are participating in this staff training, which reportedly will run from February 8-12. [7]  The primary stated goal of this training is to coordinate Russian and Belarusian command staff in the RGV’s Joint Command to work out RGV operations to protect the Union State—a supranational organization between Belarus and Russia that the Kremlin seeks to use to subsume Belarus. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on this training as of this writing.

The Kremlin will likely increasingly leverage the RGV in its efforts to integrate Belarus into Russia.  The RGV’s further formalization with a common military doctrine in October 2020 was a major achievement in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s larger campaign to subordinate former Soviet states’ militaries to Russian-dominated structures. [8]  The RGV’s founding treaty from 1999 defines the RGV as a combined military structure—broadly encompassing both forces and control elements—of the armed forces of Russia and Belarus. [9]  The original RGV treaty states both Russian and Belarusian defense ministries determine the military units that constitute the RGV. The RGV’s operation jurisdiction is all Belarusian and Russian territory and airspace. Open sources do not discuss the full roster of Russian and Belarusian units that currently constitute the RGV. Former Belarusian Ministry of Defense Andrei Ravkov said the RGV included Russia’s 1st Tank Army of the Western Military District in March 2017. [10]

This training is a February 2021 iteration of the monthly joint Russo-Belarusian joint military activity intended to support Russian-Belarusian military integration at the upcoming Zapad 2021 exercises.  The Belarusian MoD explicitly said this training is part of joint Belarusian-Russian activities to prepare for Russia’s capstone military exercise for 2021—Zapad 2021.

The Kremlin may leverage the RGV to exert military pressure against NATO.  The Kremlin may use RGV forces to project against NATO given Russian and Belarusian units have already conducted joint exercises with explicitly anti-NATO objectives before Putin coerced self-declared Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko into further formalizing the RGV in October 2020. [11]

Belarusian forces continued combat readiness-exercises postured against NATO throughout Belarus on February 8.  The Belarusian MoD mobilized an unspecified battalion of the Minsk-based 120 th  mechanized brigade to the Borisov training ground in Grodno for exercises and raised an unspecified battalion of the Vitebsk-based 103rd airborne brigade to its highest combat readiness level on February 8. [12]  There is no evidence these exercises were preplanned.

These exercises have no clear complimentary Russian counterpart as of this writing. Russian and Belarusian forces held likely joint (though nominally separate) large combat-readiness exercises in Kaliningrad, Belarus, and mainland western Russia on January 25. [13]

ISW will continue monitoring the situation and providing updates.

Member Login South Coast Baltic Where boating adventure begins Tips for visiting Kaliningrad Region / Russia (UPDATED!) Arrival and departure with the boat Baltijsk is the only harbour with regular border and customs clearance for foreign boats. It is therefore always the first and last port of call. International boats may approach Baltijsk only from the Bay of Gdańsk. Entry via the Curonian Lagoon or the Vistula Lagoon is not possible. It is not allowed to stay in Baltijsk over night. Boats must leave the harbour immediately after the border and customs clearance. The continuation of the journey to the next marinas via the Sea Channel takes 3 to 4 hours. Leisure boats are only allowed to use the canal during daytime (i.e. between sunrise and sunset) and only under engine with a maximum speed of 25 km/h. When entering Kaliningrad Region, therefore, you should arrive in Baltijsk at least 4 hours before sunset. For sailing and motor boats: „Marina Haydekrug“ in Vzmorje (travel time from Baltijsk: approx. 3 h, max. draught: 2-2,3 m, depending on the water level). For motor boats, alternative: Marina at the Museum of the World Ocean in Kaliningrad (travel time from Baltijsk: approx. 4 h, max. height: 3,5 m because of a bridge passage). For the larger yachts: Marina Kaliningrad “Fish Boat” (travel time from Baltijsk: approx. 4 hours; Note: the marina does not operate on a regular basis. Please contact the harbour master well in advance if you consider to stay in the harbour and ask if mooring will be possible on the planned day of your arrival. Check-in and check-out in Baltijsk Boaters should hold radio watch on VHF ch. 74 when entering Russian waters and approaching Baltijsk. It is required to make a call by VHF ch.74, call sign «Baltijsk Traffic» for arrival permission. Border and customs clearance in Baltijsk takes place at the border control point next to the container terminal (pier no. 81). If all documents are in place and prepared beforehand, check in and check out should usually not take more than 30-60 min per boat. Please note that you have to check in and check out on the side of European Union, too. Please contact the responsible authorities in Gdańsk, Hel or Klaipėda. The harbour masters are glad to help you and to give you further information on process and contact persons. Required documents for entering Kaliningrad Region with the boat Please prepare following documents before entering Russia: Passport (recommended: original & 1 copy of the photo page of the passport) e-visa (recommended: printout of the PDF version; alternatively: Download-version on the mobile device) Proof of health insurance / insurance certificate for Russia (can be obtained from the insurance company, min. overage: 30.000 EUR) Passport with a valid visa (original & 1 copy each of  photo page & the visa page) International boat certificate or flag certificate (original & 1 copy) For charter boats: charter contract (original & 1 copy) Crew list (min. 5 copies, usually you need 3 of them for the check-in and another 2 for the check-out) Applying for Russian visa Citizens of the European Union need valid Russian visa to enter Kaliningrad Region. There are different types of visa available: E-visa (new from 1 July 2019): This type of visa is free of charge. Application and issuance are done online. An invitation is not required. The electronic visa allows a one-time entry to Kaliningrad Region and (within 30 days after issuing) a stay of max. 8 days. Tourist visa (non-electronic): This visa is subject to a fee (approx. EUR 80-120 per person). The application must be made in person or in writing. Furthermore, an invitation is required. The maximum stay is 4 weeks. Within this period, up to 2 entries into Russia are possible. Other types of visas: In addition, other types of visas (e.g. business visas, multiple visas, etc.) can be applied for. However, these may be relevant for boaters only in some special cases (e.g. multiple entries over a longer period). E-visa (new from 1 July 2019): As a general rule, the electronic visa is the best option. It is free of charge. Application and issuance takes place online. An invitation from Kaliningrad Region is not required, too. Single entry and a maximum stay duration of 8 days is sufficient for most kind of trips, too. The application for e-visa is done online via http://electronic-visa.kdmid.ru/klgd_home_en.html. On the website (languages: English, Russian), you will be guided through the application process step by step and with detailed explanations. Passport (valid for at least 6 months after the day of application) Digital photo (in color) as a jpg-file Proof of foreign health insurance for Russia (issued by the insurance, minimum coverage 30,000 EUR) This document does not have to be uploaded when applying for the visa, but it has to be shown shown when you cross the border. Since some insurance companies send it out only by post, it is best to apply for it before the trip begins. The issuance of the e-Visa takes place via the website, too (download via an user account that is created with the application). You can choose between a PDF version for printing or an electronic version that you can directly upload into your smartphone. You can apply for e-visa at the earliest 20 days and at the latest 4 days before the planned entry. Processing and issuing takes 4 calendar days. Depending on the trip plan, therefore, the application for the electronic visa may in some cases be possible only during the cruise.
