Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2 Review
26th nov 2015 by samantha wilson.
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2 is a luxury cruising sailboat that represents a balance between performance, comfort, and elegance. It has fine entry lines, a responsive and quick hull, and an unencumbered deck layout, together with luxurious 3-cabin accommodation below deck. Teak joinery is blended with white fabric liners to create a bright feeling. A second-hand Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2 is a yacht that comes with a well-deserved reputation as a fast luxurious passage-maker.
Who and what was this boat designed for?
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2 is a 45-foot monohull aft-cockpit fiberglass sloop that a couple can sail anywhere either alone or with family and friends in comfort and style. It has a simple rig that is powerful enough for fast, fun cruising runs or passages, and it’s surprisingly quick and stiff under sail. The boat has a self-furling mainsail that doesn't need battens and a high-cut, furling Genoa with enough power to speed through an ocean seaway.
What commentators say about this boat?
The hull, keel, rudder, and rig, are simple, powerful and created to enhance fast safe and comfortable shorthanded sailing.
On deck, the 45.2 combines Jeanneau's trademark clean, modern lines with an easy-to-handle, all-furling sailplan controlled from the huge aft cockpit.
The innovative, well-appointed interior makes living aboard for long periods an alluring option.
It has the feel of a hand-crafted yacht in which the care of craftsmen still dictates the structure and finish of every detail.
We coveted the boat’s swim platform aft, marveled at the huge cockpit with a table for six and envied its interior volume.
Model variations
There are two different layouts:
- An owner's version, with a single cabin forward and two double cabins aft.
- A charter edition, with two double cabins forward.
Jeanneau offers two keel versions:
- A bulbed fin keel with a standard draft of 6 feet, 7 inches, and a deep, balanced rudder.
- The shoal-draft version, which may prove more popular in many sailing areas in the United States, is 5 feet, 3 inches.
Specifications
- Length overall: 46ft 5in (14.15 m)
- Beam overall: 14ft 8in (4.48m)

What’s great about the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2?
- Under sail the boat is very solid and easy to steer.
- Clean hull lines with fairly narrow entry.
- Designed for fast, safe and comfortable shorthanded sailing.
- Easy-to-handle, all-furling sailplan controlled from the aft cockpit.
- Good power/prop combination for motoring.

- Jeanneau has a long pedigree of designing and building large custom yachts and family cruising boats.
What to look out for on a pre-owned Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2?
If you’re buying a used Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2, owners have reported some things to watch out for and potential faults that might occur on this boat from time to time.
- The speed and windward point is compromised some by the extra weight and design of the shoal draft.
- The 135 Genoa is a little small below 10 knots.
- Buying an ex charter boat means it has probably been well maintained but heavily used and should be considered a much older boat.
- Some owners have reported that older Jeanneau yachts fitted with a spade rudder have the potential problems with the top rudder bearing rusting due to the fact it sits in a metal frame which can trap water. To check, remove the emergency tiller cover and shine a torch onto the top bearing and the frame in the space immediately below.
Keeping your Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2 in shape
When buying a used Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.2, regular scheduled servicing and attention to some minor points will keep your craft in top condition. Jeanneau provides a comprehensive user manual for this boat.
Regular servicing
Carry out regular engine and drive servicing in line with the manufacturer’s recommended intervals.
Maintenance
Check all stringers and ribs for delamination or cracks caused by a hard grounding.
Rinse the sails with fresh water every so often and dry as soon as possible to prevent mould.
Avoid drying the sails in the lee on the mast, as shaking can wear away the seams and the sail could potentially be torn off by the rigging.
If you leave the sails on the mast, even for 24 hours, protect with a cover against UV rays that could damage the sail.
Inspect the rudder closely.
Check the keel/hull joint.
Moisture checks the deck and regularly brush with a degreasing shampoo and freshwater, but make sure you do not use any solvent or solvent-based products.
Rinse the plexiglass/fibreglass with freshwater and brighten up with soft rags soaked in paraffin oil.
Check the mast from top to bottom before each trip and regularly check the chainplates and stays for the condition.
Regularly check the jam cleat jaws on the running rigging for condition and inspect the halyards for wear and tear.
Rinse the windlass and anchor chain with fresh water after every trip.
Protect the interior of your boat from UV rays by simply pulling the blinds down.
To keep your varnish pristine occasionally rinse with degreasing shampoo, mixed with fresh water, then polish with a chamois leather.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1
- By Quentin Warren
- Updated: October 22, 2001
You cant help but be impressed with the way Jeanneau puts together a 40-footer. Design considerations are balanced so that aesthetics, performance and amenity enjoy equal emphasis. Construction is optimized for solidity and strength. Appointments are sensitively addressed. Finish work is expert and clean. A typical late-model Jeanneau draws on years of careful and studied product development, and it shows in what these boats look like and how they sail. Certainly it shows in the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1, a graceful cruiser with a modern disposition.
The 45.1 sports a tall, high-aspect masthead rig built by Sparcraft and held up with continuous wire stays and hefty fore and aft lowers. The section is deck stepped, a proven Jeanneau staple, supported by a sturdy compression post below and bolstered with bulkhead and cabin top structural reinforcement. Chain plates are secured with stainless rod to the transverse component of the hull grid. Standard are an in-mast furling main and a recessed jib furler at the stemhead.
Jeanneau hull construction features solid glass with Kevlar reinforcement hand laid in isophthalic polyester resin. Longitudinal stringers fully bonded-in provide hull rigidity, and substantial transverse members also bonded-in serve as floors to carry keel and rig loads and to render the underbody as unified and sound as a rock. The deck is cored with end-grain balsa. This tapers to solid glass outboard where the deck flange is mated to the inturned hull flange at the hull-deck joint. Hull and deck are affixed with an adhesive-sealant, then the joint itself is finished with an aluminum sheer extrusion that incorporates a toe rail and rub rail; this element is fastened mechanically with thru-bolts. The keel is made of cast iron and bolted externally through the vessels built-up flooring with no less than ten galvanized steel fasteners threaded into steel keel inserts.
On deck the 45.1 is clean and functional. Nearly 15 feet of beam brought well aft provide plenty of real estate for open-air lounging and allow the side decks to remain wide and easily negotiated; the inboard location of the chain plates abets the clear path forward. Heavy-duty double bow rollers lead ground tackle fair to a horizontal windlass recessed below deck level in the top portion of the anchor locker. As noted, the jib furler is similarly recessed, which adds up to a remarkably clean-looking foredeck. Just aft of the anchor locker is an enormous watertight deck locker for running rigging, dock lines, fenders and the like; it is accessed through a large hatch and is equipped with its own ladder.
The cabin top is so low-profile as to appear nearly flush, penetrated by more than 20 opening ports and hatches. This certainly promotes ventilation below, but keeping track of whats open and whats closed is apt to be a frustrating exercise when it comes time to dog the boat down — especially if you have to do so in a hurry. Certainly those for whom any hole in a boat is a potential weak link might question the efficacy of this arrangement.
Sail-handling cordage is led aft to the cockpit through organizers and jammers on the cabin top. A social and focal point of the boat, the cockpit falls into that category called Really Big, with large lockers beneath the seats, room in comfort for at least eight, a double-leaf folding table amidships and helm stations port and starboard. The backstay is split and the after coaming hinges, allowing unobstructed access to a scooped-out transom all the way aft. Primary winches are located forward near the cabin bulkhead and the main traveler is fixed across the cabin top forward of the companionway, all of which results in an open, unencumbered space.
A low-step bridge deck followed by a lip at the cabin bulkhead gains you the main hatch and companionway below. Angled treads lead you into the saloon. Here a first-class nav station tucked in on the starboard side is opposed by a head installed to port. Two matching cabins, one port and one starboard, reside aft of this beneath the cockpit area in the hips, each with its own hanging locker and storage system. Common areas in the saloon include an oval-shaped settee on the starboard side with storage beneath, and a longitudinal galley area strung along outboard to port. Finally, all the way forward you can choose between an owners double stateroom or two partitioned cabins. A second head is located on the starboard side in this area.
It is worth noting that the execution below and the materials used are top notch. There is plenty of sugary varnished teak, offset by a light-colored, rot-proof headliner and attractive solid-color velvet upholstery. Details such as custom bins, trays and drawers for storage of glassware and utensils point to a thorough interior design approach.
The 451 is powered by a 60-horsepower Yanmar 4JH2TE diesel, easily accessed all the way around by lifting the companionway element and opening engine bay panels in the after cabin(s). It is equipped with a powerful 70-amp alternator that tops off the battery bank secured nearby beneath the port berth aft. The fuel tank with its own shut-off is located beneath the starboard berth aft. A water tank resides forward beneath the owners berth; the freshwater control panel is installed cleverly at the end of the main settee in the saloon. The electrical distribution panel is located conventionally at the nav station. Wiring is neatly bundled and carefully labeled.
Under sail, the boat is solid, quick and responsive. We had the opportunity to go for a ride off southeast Florida last March following the passage of a cold front that left in its wake some gusty northerlies and lumpy seas. Ballast and sail area are nicely balanced, and control from the helm is excellent. The 451 is wide enough to make having port and starboard steering stations a sensible feature, giving you terrific visibility from well outboard on the high side or the low. The hull is weatherly and the ride steady through chop, which allows you to put the boat in the groove and click off the miles handily upwind or on a reach.
Jeanneau has jumped through a lot of hoops here. If you are partial to a sailboat with sophisticated performance, elegant accommodations, a clean look and a reasonable price tag, the Sun Odyssey 451 deserves a look.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS review: from the archive
- Theo Stocker
- April 13, 2021
Sunshine isn’t what most people sail to Scotland for, but Theo Stocker finds that this Sun Odysssey is surprisingly well suited to West Coast cruising
A cruiser that is quick on the water and comfortable at anchor, the 45DS is an attractive boat for British sailing. Credit: Theo Stocker Credit: Theo Stocker
Product Overview
Just how well would a high-volume cruiser designed predominantly for warmer waters handle the tough conditions often found off Scotland?
It was the question I pondered as I drove north to Loch Craignish.
Mottled mountainsides shape-shifted under scudding cloud shadows and arms of water snaked inland among scattered islands across the waters where Blue Damsel , a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS (deck saloon), was waiting on the pontoon.
I’d arrived at Ardfern Yacht Centre, with owners Boyd and Kitty Holmes, to sail their 45DS – big sister of the Sun Odyssey 41DS (YM, Sep 2013) and now superseded by Jeanneau’s 44DS.
Performance of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS
We headed Blue Damsel around the rocky outcrop that shelters the marina, and out into the head of Loch Craignish, where a keen 14-16 knots met her head on.
Under power, her 54hp Yanmar saildrive pushed her along at 6 knots at 2,000rpm, or 7.5 knots flat out.
With one reef in the main and a roll in the genoa, Blue Damsel put her shoulder to gunmetal grey water.
On the wind, Blue Damsel was quick to answer the helm as gusts barrelled over the hills.
All lines are led aft, but a lack of storage makes for a bit of a snakes’ wedding.
With 15-20° of heel, she was very well mannered.
Beyond that there was some weather helm and, pushed hard in the stronger gusts, she had a slight tendency to round up to the wind.
Off the wind, she sat up and accelerated, feeling well under control.
We soon had two reefs in the powerful main. As another squall came through, Boyd assured me, ‘If you don’t like the weather here, just wait 20 minutes and it’ll be fine.’
It wasn’t long before we were in calmer, sunnier conditions.
As we sailed out past George Orwell’s hideaway at Barnhill on Jura and into the Sound of Jura, Boyd told me about his yacht.
‘She’s a good stable boat and she has a long waterline.
I’m glad I went for the performance rig and deep keel, rather than the shallow draught version,’ he said.
Design & construction
Drawn by Philippe Briand, the Sun Odyssey 45DS aims to offer good stability, comfort at sea, easy handling and ample living space, so she has a lot to live up to.
Unloaded, she is a light-displacement boat at under ten tonnes, but she is designed with enough stowage for another four tonnes of cruising gear.
Her voluminous hull is solid glassfibre laminate, with a liner to spread the forces of keel and rig.
She is fitted with a 9/10 fractional Z-Spars rig with two sets of swept-back spreaders and a hydraulically adjustable split backstay.
A powerful fully-battened mainsail and large overlapping genoa give her plenty of drive and options for adjustment. Single-line slab reefs are led back to the cockpit.
A high boom and the mainsheet forward of the companionway keeps the cockpit clear, but does mean that a couple of mast steps are needed to get hold of the head of the sail and to zip up the mainsail cover.
Deck layout on the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS
From the pontoon, the height of Blue Damsel’s topsides is noticeable.
On board, there’s a feeling is of being up on top of the water, thanks to a wide, open cockpit.
The helm position at both wheels is well laid out, with the engine throttle at the port wheel, and instruments – Autohelm, VHF radio command mic and pod-mounted Raymarine E120 chartplotter – all nicely to hand.
There is plenty of space in the cockpit to sit back and enjoy the stunning views, especially in the sunshine.
The Harken genoa winches are also within easy reach but the mainsheet is led to the coachroof.
Sitting outboard to steer is comfortable with clear visibility forwards and a curved footwell provides good bracing when standing.
There are plenty of grab handles around the wheels, table and companionway for moving around, and the table provides necessary bracing for crew when heeled.
One of the two winches on the coachroof is electric for hoisting the mainsail.
With all lines led aft, there was a lot of rope lying on deck.
Rope bags would have helped, though the 41DS and 44DS have rope bins in the cockpit sole.
Wide side decks allow an easy passage forward, although there is a narrow ledge outside the cockpit coaming to look out for.
Shrouds terminate just outboard of the coachroof, leaving plenty of space to step round them.
The low-profi le coachroof creates a large working area on the foredeck and the deep anchor locker contains an electric windlass.
Moulded GRP decks give good grip and a teak toerail keeps feet securely on deck.
The steps down to the wide bathing platform contain the liferaft and cockpit storage is ample, with shallow cockpit lockers under the benches and plenty of space beneath the helm seats and cockpit coamings aft.
Living aboard the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS
Below decks, large windows and a pale wood finish give a bright, spacious feeling.
Hull ports offer views outside when sitting at the saloon table.
The joinery was still in good condition after several years of use.
She is bright and airy below decks, perfect for a relaxing evening afloat.
Nice details include recessed grabrails running the length of the saloon in the deckhead and just below the windows, so there is always a handhold at any angle of heel, and a locker dubbed ‘the juke box’ by Boyd, just forward of the chart table, which opens to reveal a mirror-lined cabinet of glasses and a good selection of bottles – a dangerous proposition one might argue, in a remote anchorage.
Two rather cave-like aft cabins are helped by an extra dose of daylight from hatches that open into the cockpit.
The forward heads provides an en suite for the owners’ cabin with a closed-off shower compartment.
The other heads, aft of the chart table, has two doors for access from the saloon or the port aft cabin.
Chart table
The chart table seat is comfy, but lacks bracing for offshore navigation INSET: The large ‘juke box’ drinks cabinet adds a touch of glamour.
The forward-facing chart table has a comfortable seat, but lacks bracing or straps for navigating on port tack.
Admittedly, with a chartplotter on deck, this is of less importance, but traditionalists will find the contoured surface around the table limits space for paper charts.
I would also prefer the chartplotter ahead of me, rather than having to twist to the side.
The galley is tucked out of the way but still has space for two fridges and a double sink.
The L-shaped galley offers good space for preparing meals, with two cool-lockers, one of which could be opened from the front and top.
The other is used as a freezer. The cook can prepare meals without being in anyone’s way and the companionway steps provide bracing for cooking under way.
Work surface space is increased with infills over the double sink.
Maintenance
Curved companionway steps lift on gas struts for engine access, and batteries are stowed in the aft cabins.
All seacocks are tucked away but have individual access hatches, and the electric switch panel is hinged for easy access.
Thanks to Mark Cameron at Ardfern Yacht Centre for the photo-shoot boat.
Our verdict on the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS
What’s she like to sail.
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45DS had options for shallow draught or a deeper, high-performance setup.
With the performance rig, a fully battened main has plenty of power even in light airs.
We tested the performance option, so she had plenty of power over a long waterline, giving her a good turn of speed.
In light conditions and off the wind she handles like a much smaller boat than she is.
She is a high-volume cruiser with ample space to live aboard, but this entails some sacrifice in her handling of stronger wind.
Weight has been kept down to keep her light and responsive and her good form stability compensates for this, but with a ballast displacement ratio of just under 30 per cent, she can be tender once a blow gets up.
This isn’t a problem as long as you reef early and sail her reasonably flat.
The newer 44DS has been stiffened up by a seven per cent increase in her ballast: displacement ratio.
There is acres of space on deck, so she is great boat for warmer climates, or for shorter cruises with friends and family.
The sails and helm are easily handled, so she won’t scare less-experienced crew, but with the ability to cover plenty of miles she should keep keen sailors happy.
What’s she like in port and at anchor?
She isn’t a true deck saloon as the saloon table is slightly too low to give its occupants a 360° view.
Not that this is matters as there is ample light and the views from the hull ports make the saloon a genuinely pleasant place to while away an evening at anchor.
Her space on deck and numerous opening hatches would make her a comfortable choice in the Mediterranean, but two Webasto heaters on the test boat would be enough to keep her cabins toasty warm even in a Scottish winter.
The 45DS was available in two and three cabin versions. In the two-cabin boat, a full-width owners’ cabin aft creates a palatial hideaway, but also limits the accommodation to four berths.
We tested the three-cabin version where the owners’ cabin is forward.
It’s pleasant and private with adequate space.
The saloon table had two folding leaves, with shallow grooves in place of real fiddles and there’s certainly space for at least six round the table.
There’s plenty of stowage in the cabins, saloon, and even under the sole in the bilge.
On a rainy day there would be enough space to relax without being on top of each other.
Would she suit you and your crew?
The Sun Odyssey 45DS is a competent, well-rounded and homely boat that is more than capable of cruising UK waters, the Mediterranean or further afi eld to the trade winds.
Some might find her cockpit exposed and her handling too tender in a real blow, preferring to opt for something with more protection and better at plugging away to windward.
She is a large boat, with high topsides, so getting to the pontoon during berthing manoeuvres could be tricky if flexibility or speed is an issue.
She is very well thought out and set up, though, so a couple can easily handle her.
Second-hand, she offers a lot of boat for the money. If you sail to relax during weekends and holidays and get a good few miles in, rather than testing your endurance in a hooley, then this boat could be just the one for you.

Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Also called MOORINGS 45.2, STARDUST 453-454 and widely used in the charter trade. A number of different layouts were available. Draft for deep keel: 2.0m/6.58’.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
