RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc.

If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore.

If you need a Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed . You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 6 waters - that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours.

Special Racing Opportunity

Boat rental.jpg

A very unique special opportunity has been offered for a season long loan of a complete, ready to go GT15 outfit. The idea is to attract a newcomer to join our regular 9-16 year old club competitors for the 2025 season without the initial outlay of purchasing a boat!

Full, comprehensive CPA training will be given prior to racing and all that’s needed from the competitor is to source their own safety equipment and cover the fuel and race entry costs each week. Additional T’s & C’s will be covered once a competitor has been confirmed.

A great chance to get on the water at little cost and with a full support package!

The end of the LOBMBC 2024 Powerboat Racing Season, "Battle of Britain" event, sadly fell foul of high wind conditions yet again for the 5th time this year ! The overall advantage with this being an afternoon event was that time was on the side of the Club Officials, unlike the normal Thursday evening racing when loss of daylight becomes a critical factor. However, racing was delayed for a considerable time during which officials assessed the water and wind conditions, joined by drivers on several occasions in one of the rescue boats and finding that in many of the exposed areas west of the clubhouse, water conditions varied to a great degree over the course. Eventually, cautious practice laps were undertaken following these; one GT15 driver retired for medical attention and two GT30s retired one with suspected hull damage, another using his discretion having had  previous bad rough water experience. The long hoped for Racing Hydro heats had to be abandoned due to the water and wind conditions disappointing fans and drivers alike, especially Paul Hart who had recently received his F500 back from being repaired following a major incident whilst racing in Europe.

OSY400 Hydroplanes raced for the Rex King East of England Trophy, each heat with a mass pontoon start was exciting to watch as they powered head first into the rough conditions, their bruised bodies fueled by adrenaline, covered in spray. From the first heat onwards it was evident that Bulldog Racing's 37 James Bowman was the man on fire and he proceeded to take a clean sweep in all heats, overall first place, Driver of the Day and fastest lap of the class trophy. Another driver who was on top form was 73 Brian Shulver, having entered the Hydroplane class late in his long racing career hard on the heels of James in each heat he took second with another top performance by 21 Thomas Lacey-Goodman, third.

Just two F2s were entered for the Battle of Britain Trophy, sadly this depleting, expensive, "Gas Guzzling" class of  boats are now few and far between on the course but a big thank you goes to 28 Richard Grant and 88 Colin Stewart for turning up and giving an excellent example of "Tortoise & Hare Racing" as Colin gave chase from a much later start and roared to victory, receiving the unique award from Flight Lieutenant James Lavery, 469 Squadron ATC.

GT15 Monohulls raced a mixed format of heats with Pontoon, rolling and handicap starts, also a delayed start in the first heat due to engine power differential. As always these youngsters entertained with their determined attitude, particularly highlighted in the last heat when 3 of the 4 boats started early so that they all, apart from 43 TJ Masters had to complete a further lap. This was such a shame as what had appeared as the finish of the day with all four boats over the line together saw just "TJ" get the chequered flag as the others were waved on for another lap. The highly prestigious Lord Louis Mountbatten Trophy went to 88 Poppy Stewart, followed by TJ with 21 Riley Hudson 3rd.

These were the conditions for the more powerful GT30s and two group races developed as 1 Ashley Penfold, 2 Mason Jessup and 6 Jonny Brewer fought it out at the front of the field with regular 8 Darrel Hibbert having to contend with his brother Richard in boat number 4  further back. Sadly Jonny suffered a breakdown only completing 2 heats but once 4 Richard Hibbert had familiarised himself as to where the Wherry Buoy was he was able to complete his first race meeting with a 3rd place in front of Darrel in fourth. as first place for the East Point Sports Trophy was shared by Ashley and Mason.
