There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes). 

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet. 

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

First released at Baselworld 2019, the Yacht-Master 42 is the newest and largest addition to the Rolex Yacht-Master lineup. Historically, the Yacht Master collection has been the only Rolex sports model available in multiple sizes; however, until the release of the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659, 40mm was the largest case size available. Despite the fact that the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 introduced a new and larger 42mm case to the collection, at the time of writing, the model is only offered in a single configuration: a 42mm white gold case fitted with a black dial, black ceramic bezel, and matching black Oysterflex bracelet.

At first glance, the Rolex Yacht Master 42 reference 226659 appears very similar to the 40mm Everose gold model that is also fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet. Both watches feature black dials, matte black ceramic bezels with raised polished numerals, black Oysterflex bracelets, and Rolex’s in-house Caliber 3235 movement. However, while the core design of the Yacht-Master 42 is shared with the other Oysterflex Yacht-Master watches, the larger case paired with its toned-down monochromatic color profile makes it immediately distinct, and these small changes come together to make the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 the perfect poster child for the modern Rolex brand.

The History of the Rolex Yacht Master 42

Compared to many of Rolex’s other lines of watches, the Yacht-Master is a fairly young collection, having only just joined the brand’s catalog in 1992. While Rolex originally built much of its reputation by producing tough-as-nails tool watches, the brand had already started to make its transition towards becoming an all-out luxury manufacturer by the 1980s, and the Yacht-Master was created as an unapologetically luxurious take on the brand’s classic sports watch.

The Rolex Yacht-Master largely follows the same overall design as the Submariner, but leans more towards the opulent and luxurious side of things, rather than being a purpose-built underwater timing tool. Both the Submariner and the Yacht-Master feature rotating timing bezels, but while the Submariner’s bezel rotates unidirectionally and features a luminous dot at the zero-marker, the Yacht-Master’s moves bi-directionally and omits the luminous dot in favor of an insert crafted from either solid gold, platinum, or black ceramic. Similarly, all Rolex Yacht-Master watches feature precious metals somewhere in their construction. Even the most humble models that are largely crafted from stainless steel feature solid platinum bezels, and while the bezel insert on the reference 226659 is built from black ceramic, the watch itself is crafted from solid 18k white gold.

Initially, the Rolex Yacht-Master was exclusively offered in solid yellow gold and with a 40mm case. However, over the years, the collection expanded to include other case sizes and materials including both two-tone and Rolesium (a combination of stainless steel and platinum) references. Both a 29mm Lady Yacht-Master and 35mm Midsize Yacht-Master were previously offered alongside the standard 40mm model, but these two smaller versions were ultimately discontinued in favor of the Midsize Yacht-Master 37.

With that in mind, Baselworld 2019 marked the arrival of both an all-new Yacht-Master size and a new material option for the collection. With the launch of the reference 226659, not only was the Rolex Yacht-Master now available with a 42mm case diameter for the first time in its history but it was also offered with a solid 18k white gold case – something that was previously not an option within the standard Yacht-Master collection. While the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 marked a major step forward for the collection, the new 42mm case size is exclusively available for the ref. 226659, and the watch is only available in one single configuration. Given that the Yacht-Master 42 has only been on the market for a couple of years, many collectors speculate that the solid 18k white gold ref. 226659 is just the first of many 42mm Rolex Yacht-Master watches.

Rolex Yacht Master 42 Defining Elements

For the most part, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is a larger, white gold version of the Everose Yacht-Master 40 that is also on an Oysterflex bracelet. However, the ref. 226659 does possess a number of unique traits that make it immediately identifiable and separate it from all other Rolex watches.

42mm White Gold Case

Probably the single most defining feature of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is its 42mm case crafted from solid 18k white gold. Not only is this unique because the ref. 226659 is the only 42mm Yacht-Master model, but it also holds the distinction of being the only one that has ever been constructed from white gold. Over the course of the Yacht-Master’s history, it has been created in full 18k yellow gold, Yellow Rolesor (stainless steel and yellow gold), Rolesium (stainless steel and platinum), full 18k Everose gold, and Everose Rolesor (stainless steel and Everose gold). Additionally, there is even a version of the 44mm Yacht-Master II regatta timer that is built from white gold with a platinum bezel, but the reference 226659 is the only iteration of the classic Yacht-Master to be offered in full 18k white gold.

Black Cerachrom Bezel

Just like the 37mm and 40mm Everose gold Rolex Yacht-Master models that are also fitted with Oysterflex bracelets, the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 receives a bidirectional timing bezel with an insert that is crafted from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material. The black ceramic insert is given a matte-sandblasted texture, with raised graduations that feature a high-polish finish for improved contrast. Despite having both a different case size and being made from different materials, the matte black ceramic insert on the Yacht-Master 42 instantly unites it with the rest of the Oysterflex bracelets Yacht-Master watches in Rolex’s portfolio.

Oysterflex Bracelet

The Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is quite possibly the most over-engineered rubber strap in the world – however, to call it a “rubber strap” is a bit misleading. Rolex specifically refers to it as a bracelet within its catalog because the elastomer strap features a flexible metal core for optimum durability and longevity. Additionally, the underside of the strap features a comfort pad that elevates the strap slightly off the wrist, better distributing the weight of the watch and promoting airflow and breathability.

One of the more interesting details about how Rolex has chosen to structure its catalog is that the Oysterflex bracelet (seemingly the most sporty and least formal option) is exclusively equipped to the brand’s solid gold models. Whether fitted to a Daytona, Sky-Dweller, or Yacht-Master watch, all of the Oysterflex-equipped models are crafted from solid 18k gold (either yellow, white, or Everose). At the time of writing, the Oysterflex bracelet is only found on the full 18k Everose gold Yachtmaster 40 and Yacht-Master 37 watches, along with the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42.

Rolex Caliber 3235 Movement

Despite being 2mm larger than the current Yacht-Master 40, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 is powered by the exact same Caliber 3235 movement. Designed and manufactured entirely in-house by Rolex, the Cal. 3235 represents the brand’s latest generation of date-displaying mechanical movements and can be found in a number of other date-displaying Rolex watches, including all-time classics like the Datejust and the Submariner.

The Caliber 3235 movement is based around Rolex’s new Chronergy escapement, which features a skeletonized structure for improved efficiency. When combined with Rolex’s proprietary blue Parachrom hairspring and a redesigned gear train and mainspring barrel, the Caliber 3235 offers users an increased power reserve of 70 hours, which represents a significant step up from the 48-hour reserve offered by its predecessor. Additionally, despite its improved efficiency, the Rolex Cal. 3235 movement adheres to the same incredibly stringent ‘Superlative Chronometer’ precision standards, which permit a maximum timekeeping deviation of -2/+2 seconds per day.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Price and Availability

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 has only been around for a couple of years, so it is still in production and available for purchase from retailers and boutiques. However, as anyone who is familiar with Rolex watches will tell you, finding the model you want brand-new and available for immediate sale is virtually impossible and for many highly popular references, there is no way to buy a brand-new Rolex without spending a significant amount of time on a waiting list. As a result of this lack of availability on a retail level, many buyers turn to the secondary market, where they can add a Rolex Yachtmaster 42 ref. 226659 to their collections without the wait.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master 42?

As of 2021, the retail price for a brand-new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is $28,900, which represents a $1,600 premium compared to its 40mm Everose gold counterpart. However, due to the fact that the white gold Yacht-Master 42 cannot be purchased at a retail level without being on a waiting list, pre-owned prices exceed their brand-new values and you can expect to pay a premium of several thousand dollars if you wish to skip the line and add one to your collection today.

The simplest way to introduce your team is by means of a team slide . This should show high-quality images of your team, either individually or in a group photo.

Keep text to an absolute minimum here.  Anything more than the names of your employees can be distracting.  You can go into greater detail in your narration.

Why does preparing for your first team meeting matter?

You don’t write a test without studying – most of the time – so why would you hold a meeting without preparing? 

The best thing you can do to achieve the amazing meeting you’ve been manifesting is to PREPARE! This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many meetings I’ve attended that were clearly not prepared.

And I’m sure you too have a story or two to tell about your own experiences with unprepared meetings. Let me guess, they go something like this:

  • Zero outcomes
  • No action items
  • Waste of valuable time
  • No assigned roles

The list could go on.

Therefore, it is important to prepare for your first team meeting by creating a meeting agenda , sharing it with meeting attendees ahead of time, and assigning clear meeting roles (and rotating them).

  • Getting to know each other

  • Communication expectations
  • Questions from the team
  • Action items and meeting recap

1 Getting to know each other

Getting to know your team members is especially important if you want to build trust (and trust me, you do!). By getting to know your team members, you are showing them that you want to build a relationship with them. This will ultimately create a more psychologically safe environment and foster more collaboration. 

So, it is important as a manager to encourage team members to get to know each other. This can be achieved by introducing icebreakers in your first team meeting with new team members. 

Here are a few examples of team building questions :

Personal icebreakers 

  • What are your hobbies outside of work?
  • What does your perfect day off look like?
  • What do you like to do on the weekend?

Music, books, and/or movie icebreakers

  • Who is your favourite artist?
  • What is your favourite book?
  • What is your favourite reality tv show? 

Travel and adventure icebreaker

  • Where have you travelled to?
  • What is your dream vacation?
  • Do you prefer spontaneous or planned adventures?

History-themed icebreakers

  • If you could meet any historical figure, who would you meet?
  • If you could live in another generation, which one would you choose?
  • If you had a time machine, would you travel to the past or future? What would you do there?

Food and/or drink icebreakers

  • What is your least favourite restaurant?
  • What is your go-to snack?
  • Do you prefer ordering in or eating out?

“This or that” icebreakers

  • Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?
  • Would you rather be able to teleport or time travel?
  • Would you rather go to space or get to travel the world for free for a year?

2 About your manager (+ what you stand for)

As a manager, it is important to share your values and what you stand for. According to Carolyn O’Hara, Harvard Business Review contributor, managers should explain their priorities, decision-making processes, and how they evaluate their teams’ individual and collective performance. 

This is important to include in team meetings when new team members join in order to ensure new members know your values and what you stand for and to serve as a reminder to current team members. 

For example, Tsedal Neeley explains that there are two types of trust – swift trust and passable trust. Swift trust is the idea that team members decide to trust each other almost immediately, only losing trust when given a reason to. Whereas passable trust is the idea that trust is more permanent and doesn’t have an expectation for a deeper connection. So, if you value one trust over another, it is important to communicate this with your team members. 

“By communicating your vision and values, you will show your team that you’re committed to a healthy degree of transparency.” – O’Hara.

3 Feedback (stop, start, continue)

Feedback is how we improve, therefore, giving your team members feedback is a very important task as a manager. However, as a manager, sometimes we get caught up in giving feedback while forgetting to ask for our own. 

Asking your team members for feedback anonymously is a great tip for managers to ensure they are also evaluating themself. By asking for anonymous feedback, you are more likely to get truthful answers – nobody’s going to publicly critique their boss! For example, holding anonymous polls after meetings asking team members for feedback on how to improve team meetings. 

Another way to get feedback as a manager is to use the “stop, start, continue” method. According to Thomas J. DeLong , there are three questions you should ask yourself in each phase of the method:

  • Are you hearing that you should quit doing something that you feel is a skill or strength?
  • Is your first response that quitting this behavior will have catastrophic consequences?
  • On reflection, is it possible that you’ve fallen into a behavioral rut? If you stop doing one thing, might you have an opportunity to try something new and different?
  • Is there something you’re doing right that people feel you should do more of?
  • Have you been dismissive of this particular behavior or skill for some reason?
  • What might happen if you used this “keep” more? How might it impact your effectiveness and satisfaction with your job?
  • Are people recommending you do something that feels foreign or scary?
  • What about it makes you anxious? Is it because you are afraid of looking like you don’t know what you’re doing?
  • Why are people suggesting you start doing this new thing? What benefits do they feel will accrue to you, your group, or your organization?

4 Communication expectations

Communicating your expectations is a great way to ensure that new team members know how to act. O’Hara suggests having team members share their best and worst work experiences to help your team learn good and bad dynamics to implement or avoid and ensure everyone is on the same page. 

Also according to O’Hara, it’s the role of the leader to set expectations and explain processes. Failure to do so may lead to an environment where team members feel left out, unsure, and hesitant to contribute. 

“Discussing those good and bad dynamics will help everyone get on the same page about what behavior they want to encourage — and avoid — going forward.”

5 Questions from the team

In every meeting, it is important to allow time for questions. However, this is especially important in the first team meeting because you are providing team members with a lot of new information and setting the tone for future meetings.

We’ve all been in a meeting where we are confused over something but are saying in our heads “is this a stupid question?” or “am I the only one with this question?”. 

Well, guess what… NO questions are stupid questions and if you are wondering, so are others! Therefore, as a manager, it is important to provide a safe, judgment-free space for questions.

6 Action items and meeting recap

It is important to include action items in your meeting agenda, especially with a new team as they tell team members what their next steps will be. For “veteran” employees, they may be able to delegate their own action items based on what was discussed in the meeting. However, for new employees, providing as much guidance as possible is important. 

Furthermore, even the most veteran employees forget things. Therefore, by recording action items in a note-taking tool, like Fellow, you can ensure that your employees know what is expected of them and hold them accountable for their tasks. 

It is also important to include a meeting recap (which includes action items) so that missed attendees can be informed on decisions made and action items assigned. 

Starting your first team meeting with a new team can feel like a lot of pressure. You want to make a good impression and set a positive tone while ensuring that your meeting is productive and delightful.

According to O’Hara, there are 3 do’s and 3 don’ts for your first team meeting with a new team:

  • Be clear about what goes into your decision making and how you’ll evaluate the team’s progress
  • Encourage team members to connect — better communication early on will help avoid misunderstandings and poor results later
  • Look for roadblocks or grievances you can fix — it will earn you capital and inspire the team
  • Jump into trying to accomplish the work without building relationships with the team
  • Assume that new team members understand how you or others work ­— take the time to explain processes and expectations.
  • Be afraid to communicate often early on — you can always pull back when the team is working well

Important Steps when Building a new Team

This article outlines essential steps in forming a new team . These steps are also useful for existing teams that are interested in assessing their format and effectiveness.

First, the work of the team needs to be clearly defined and matched to some real needs of the department, lab or center or of the Institute as a whole. If the team doesn't get a clear mission or scope statement from the team sponsor , creating these should be part of the team's kick-off process. (See our Checklist for Team Start-up Microsoft Word tool.)

In the early stages it is important to talk to the team's sponsor about their role and how they will support the team's work. What will the sponsor do for the team? What does the sponsor expect from the team? Teams need the clear support of the organization's leadership, including concrete support such as release time, funding and resources.

Selecting the right team members is critical. Ideally, teams should be small (not more than ten people) so that members can develop a high-level of connection and interdependence. Members need both technical expertise (including writing and presentation skills) and good interpersonal skills for working in small groups. For teams working on Institute-wide projects, diverse membership (across MIT's units, across payroll/employee classifications and across gender/race categories) can lead to a richer team with better results. Content experts, process experts and end users can all play key roles.

Team kick-off events are an important part of the start-up process. Kick-off events enable the team to articulate and understand the goals, mission and structure. A well-planned kick-off can increase team productivity and build team momentum. A formalized start-up activity will help the team define its mission, deliverables, roles & responsibilities, and success factors.

How can I build a successful team?

Six items are crucial to help teams function effectively.

It is the shared commitment to a specific mission that helps define a team. A mission statement can provide powerful documentation about the team's purpose. Creating a mission statement requires team members to think about, discuss and come to agreement on the following questions:

  • What is the work we were brought together to do?
  • Why can this work best be done as a team?
  • What will be different as a result of our working together?
  • What will our work create for our organization, our team and ourselves?
  • For project teams: What will a successful outcome look like for our team? How will we know we've completed our task?
  • For standing teams: How will we measure our success in an on-going way?

A team's mission may be based on a directive from management or others outside the team. But good team discussion about how each member -- and the group collectively -- understands that mission will make the mission statement meaningful and useful to the team. Mission statements may be short; they should be written in everyday language that each team member understands and supports.

Mission statements give a team guiding principles, but goals give the team a real target for their activity. Goals should be something worth striving for -- important results that the team can provide for the organization.

The best goals are S-M-A-R-T goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. "Improving customer service" may sound like a good goal for a team, but it doesn't really meet the S-M-A-R-T criteria. A more effective goal would be "Reduce call-back time to customers to two hours or less within six months." The revised goal is:

  • Specific (reduce call-back time to customers)
  • Measurable (to two hours or less)
  • Achievable (The team would need to decide this. Maybe call-backs need four hours, or maybe the time can be reduced to 30 minutes.)
  • Relevant (Again, the team will know - is slow call-back time an issue for the customers? For the team's manager? Is reducing call-back time important enough to merit team effort?)
  • Time bound (within six months)

3. Roles and responsibilities

It's particularly important in a team environment that team members know what is expected of each of them. Without these expectations, members can't develop mutual accountability or trust in the team. When a team's expectations are clear and members meet (or exceed) expectations, trust and an increased sense of "teamness" are natural by-products.

Almost all teams at MIT have designated team leaders. Team leaders are the individuals who are held accountable for the team's results by the team's sponsor. The Team leader often serves as a spokesperson for the team and may also be responsible for coordinating the team's work. Facilitators may be a member of the team or a resource person for the team. The facilitator is responsible for guiding the team's process. This might include helping to set agendas for team meetings and running the meetings. Sometimes these two roles are played by one person. (Learn more about facilitators in the Meeting Design and Facilitation Learning Topic.)

4. Groundrules

To be effective, teams need to be explicit about the ways they will work together. Groundrules are guidelines for specific behaviors. Teams don't need a lot of groundrules to work together well, but everyone on the team should agree to the groundrules and share responsibility for ensuring that they are followed.

Possible areas for groundrules include:

  • How you communicate DURING team meetings (Are interruptions OK? Should the Facilitator call on you before you speak? What about side conversations?)
  • How you communicate BETWEEN team meetings (How quickly should you respond to emails? Are there suggested length limits on emails or memos? How do you keep everyone on the team informed of your progress?)
  • What constitutes respectful behavior towards other team members?

Some sample ground rules include:

  • Be respectful of others -- don't bad-mouth team members within the team or outside the team
  • Share your own experiences and opinions; avoid "they say" statements
  • One speaker at a time
  • Keep discussions focused on topic at hand
  • Honor time limits - start and end on time

5. Decision-making

Teams may choose different models for making decisions; the most important factor is that the decision-making model be explicit and understood by all team members. A clear decision making model describes who makes the decision and how others will be involved. (Will decisions be made by consensus where everyone can agree to support the final decision? Will the team leader get input but make the final decision? Will the team vote?) Knowing what decision-making model will be used lets team members know what to expect and what is expected; this can help build support for the final decision.

Good decisions have two characteristics: quality and commitment. Quality decisions are logical, supported by sound reasoning and good information. Steps towards making quality decisions include checking to see if all available information has been gathered and shared, that all team members have been consulted, and that critical input from stakeholders (individuals or groups affected by the decision) outside the team has been considered as appropriate.

Commitment is demonstrated by the active backing for the decision by every team member. Each team member agress with the decision, is committed to carrying out the decision, and understands their individual role in doing so.

6. Effective Group Process

Communication: Using groundrules as a starting point, teams need to develop practices for open communication. Examples include:

  • Listen respectfully and respond with positive interest to ideas from team members. If an idea is confusing or seems unconventional or odd to you, ask for more information to understand the idea better. (Saying, "Can you tell me more?" is a great way to continue a conversation.)
  • Help create an environment that encourages team members to share all ideas - even the "half-baked" ones. Most great ideas are built by teams building on an initial thought. Sometimes it's the "crazy" ideas that really spark the team's creativity. Treating every idea as important keeps team members from holding back some "half-baked" thought that could be just what the team needed.
  • Don't hide conflicts; try to surface differences and use them to create better results that all team members can support.

Mutual Accountability: Each member of a team is responsible for the success of the team as a whole. This is the interdependence that makes teams stronger than the sum of their parts. Working together towards specific tangible results is the best way to start creating mutual accountability. Recognize and celebrate small accomplishments and successes of individuals and milestones (large and small) for the team as a whole. By acknowledging successes, team members can develop an increasing trust in their teammates and the team as a whole.

Appropriate self-evaluation: It is be helpful for team members to "stop action" at regular intervals and check out how the team is working. These self-evaluations can be as simple as a team discussion: "Looking at X, what things worked well and what would we like to improve next time?" or they can be deep and reflective (e.g., "How can we deal with conflict more effectively?"). Regardless of the method or tool used, the real benefit of self-evaluation comes from the team discussion about their assessments of the team.

Stages of team development

Just like individuals, teams go through stages of development. Although there are a number of descriptions of the stages of team development, the most commonly used terms are forming, storming, norming and performing. (Bruce Tuckman, "Developmental Sequence in Small Groups," 1965 Psychological Bulletin, 63, 384-99)

As in human development, team development is not a linear process -- the introduction of new members, a change in the organization's climate, or the successful completion of a particular milestone can cause a team to loop back to an earlier stage of team development.

Recognizing the team's development stage can be really helpful as you work to improve your team's effectiveness and meet your goals. Each stage has recognizable feelings and behaviors. Even the most experienced and confident people have the jitters w hen first meeting with a new team.

That's true for extroverts and people in every industry. Whether you're a new manager  or a new employee, you want to get the first meeting with a new team right.

The first meeting with a new team is important because it introduces who you are as a person, what you'll contribute to the team, and how you plan on helping your team succeed. It's a time to answer and ask questions and start bonding with the people you'll be working closely with. You have one shot at this, so preparation is crucial for a successful first meeting.

Fortunately, simple strategies are available to ease your nerves and help ensure your first meeting is successful.

Fir st impressions matter a lot. Walking into your first team meeting gives you and the rest of your team members a lot of information, even if it seems nonchalant. 

If you're joining a new team at work, you want to clarify that you're ready to contribute  and bring your skills and ideas to the team — especially if that team is high-performing. Maybe you're meeting with a new boss before your team's first meeting. Don't be afraid to ask questions so your introduction meeting with your new team goes smoothly.

If you're wondering what to say when joining a new team, remember to be your authentic self as you introduce yourself. New employees want to relate to team members on a personal level, so tell them some things about yourself that aren’t work-related to easier connect.

You can gain a sense of team values and culture by listening to people talk . If you're leading the meeting, ensure there are plenty of opportunities for different people to speak.

If it's your first meeting with employees as a new manager , the first meeting is a time to establish your management style . When you're managing a new team, people need to bond and get to know each other. Aim to build trust and foster a team where everyone gets along . The initial meeting will help you start off on the right foot and develop your team .

Your first meeting can bring a lot of pressure. Of course, you want to get your points across clearly and not fumble with your words. The best way to do that is to walk in as prepared as you can be. (Don't forget breathing exercises are an important part of the preparation for a big meeting.)

Here are nine tips to help you lead your first meeting with confidence and ease:

1. Have a set agenda

What new team leaders should do first is create a set agenda. When you have something to reference, remembering everything yourself takes the stress off. Make a template with either a slideshow or handwritten cue cards .

These aides will help you stay on topic and hit all the points you wanted to discuss during your meeting. 

As a new manager, you want your first impression to be that you’re organized and can lead your team well . Your agenda template sets the tone for the meeting. It also indicates your broader expectations and leadership philosophy .

2. Prepare questions and prepare to be asked questions

Ask your team members to tell you a bit about themselves in a professional way. Social connection and trust are hard to build in the virtual environment. Model vulnerability by sharing a bit about yourself, including who you are as a person. Be thoughtful about what details you want to share and why to avoid going too deep or intimate.

Ask each person to introduce themselves with a few points that might include something light-hearted but also something about their current work. Icebreaker questions help lighten the mood and encourage people to share their values and what's meaningful to them.

For a new manager, first meetings with staff are the chance to start learning who they are in addition to what kind of professional development  and mentoring opportunities they're searching for.

Don’t be afraid to ask some tough questions, either. Ask them what their worst team experiences have been like and how you can help them with their problems. Allow them to ask you some questions, too, to help them better know your management style .

3. Get your meeting space set up just the way you’d like it

What’s worse than walking into a meeting space and finding it totally upside down? If you're lucky enough to be in-person, set up the physical space. 

If people are too spaced out or too close together, they’ll feel awkward. Make sure your space is intimate enough to have room for everyone, but they aren’t struggling to hear others when they speak. Make sure that any seating faces in the direction you want and that there’s enough space for everyone.

Even in the virtual environment, consider what virtual collaboration tools you will use, when, and where. Err on the side of leaving the presentation off so that people can see you and each other for a first meeting.

A comfortable environment for your first meeting can help ease any tension or nerves. That goes for both you and your new team members.

4. Research your new team ahead of time

There's nothing wrong with doing a little research before you meet face-to-face . Try using Lin kedIn to check out what kind of skills your team members bring to the team and where they've worked before. It's a way of getting to know your team ahead of time, which is helpful if you're nervous. It can inspire you to ask questions and help you relate more personally.

It will also help you remember names, learn pronunciations, and become familiar with their faces ahead of time. Check out your new company's website to see if they have a "meet the team" page. 

Even if you do a lot of research, don't let that get in the way of getting to know your team and leaving them room to tell you about themselves. People are far more than their LinkedIn profile. Leave room for them to surprise you.

5. Set a good example

Model the behavior you want to see from your team members and throughout the office in your new role. Keep distractions such as electronics away so they don't derail your prepared agenda. If cameras-on is the norm, tell people in advance and remind them again in the first meeting.

Show them what kind of team culture you want to establish. Explain the i mportance of collaborative intelligence in the workplace and set an example during your meeting by listening to others, asking questions, and being open to feedback. Bring an optimistic attitude and be excited about the work you're about to do.

Up your energy by doing quick exercises or breathing before the meeting, if possible. If it's a video call, take it from a standing position and speak to the camera as if the team members are in the room with you.

And, of course, arrive on time. You don't want to be late for your introduction meeting with a new team.

6. Set proper goals

Establish what goals you want to set for your team ahead of time. Think about what direction you want your team to take, or what quota you want to fill. These goals for your team members could be daily, weekly, or monthly. High-performing teams will want you to set goals so they can continue to grow, but setting clear and attainable work goals benefits every kind of team.   

7. Don't over-explain things

It's great to be articulate when you're communicating, but make sure you aren't over-explaining things. Your team members are intelligent. If people already know their roles and responsibilities, you don't need to include onboarding information in your initial meeting.

Check-in with people if they seem confused, but don't assume they don't know anything about how the business works or what their roles demand. 

Your working relationship with others should respect and acknowledge their intelligence, experience, and expertise rather than doubt it.

8. Practice your timing

There's no need to spend the whole meeting talking about one topic. You want to keep your team member's attention, not bore them. An effective team meeting doesn't have to last two hours. It should be concise and respect other people's time and attention.

Review your meeting agenda, see if one section seems too long, and see how you can shorten it. Leave some time for questions, too. Your new team is likely just as curious about you as you are about them.

9. Have a strong close

Don't be the first to leave the room. But don't let the meeting trail on awkwardly. Summarize your points and action items and end it. Your close should be concise and motivational, too. Motivating your team  will encourage team members to become passionate, set goals for themselves, and work hard.

Be inviting and reinforce what you've put effort into preparing for your new team by sticking around to chat. Offer to clarify any final questions and schedule any one-on-one meetings , if necessary. Show that you're open to connecting with people and getting to know your team members by being openly interested in what they have to say.

You want your first meeting with employees as a new manager to be successful since you've done so much preparation. You also want your employees to succeed , and a strong first meeting helps with that.

CrowdStrike was tapped to investigate the hack of Sony Pictures in 2014, which resulted in the release of confidential data from the movie studio, and the hack of the Democratic National Committee in 2016, which exposed Hillary Clinton’s emails. CrowdStrike serves about 29,000 customers and has about $4 billion in annual sales.

Cybersecurity software like CrowdStrike’s has broad privileges to run across a computer system, including into sensitive areas. That means when errors occur, the ripple effect can be significant.

CrowdStrike updates its security software automatically and silently. A flawed update on Friday morning, of its Falcon Sensor software, resulted in crashes of machines running Microsoft Windows operating system and caused the worldwide chaos.

We’re deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers,” George Kurtz, the chief executive of CrowdStrike, said in an interview on the “Today” show. “We know what the issue is. We’re resolving and have resolved the issue now.”

Mr. Kurtz said the outages were not the result of a security incident or cyberattack.

An updated fix of the software has been sent to computers, but experts said outages would most likely persist as CrowdStrike customers worked to reboot computers that had already been affected. Some systems were able to automatically install the fix, Mr. Kurtz said, while others would require manual intervention from I.T. specialists.

CrowdStrike, which went public in 2019, is worth about $76 billion. Its stock fell dramatically on Friday after news of the outage, and remained down about eight percent that morning.

“This is an unprecedented event and not something we or anyone had in their cards,” analysts for Evercore, an investment banking firm, wrote in a note to investors. “This event clearly proves that cyber needs to be diversified and the idea of relying on one or two vendors will come under scrutiny.”

COLLIDER: I just want to say that it is pretty crazy; I did a set visit on Iron Man back in the day, the first one, and I remember you talking about the dream. The first three Marvel movies needed to make money, or it was game over for the entire company, and where you are now, it's incredible.

KEVIN FEIGE: It is. It's incredible we've been together that long, Steve. Wow!

The fact that I'm still doing this, you know what I mean? I could say on camera so many stories from those early set visits, but I got a lot of questions.

What Will the Deadpool Comic-Con Panel Be About?

A lot of people are wondering, with the Deadpool panel Thursday night at Comic-Con in Hall H, is there any possibility you would screen the entire film that night?

FEIGE: This is a Hall H panel called [The Ultimate Deadpool and Wolverine] Celebration of Life. Why is it called the Celebration of Life, you ask? Because Ryan thought it'd be weird. It'd be funny. It is the opening day, we think people have their tickets to go see the movie, and we wanted to acknowledge that fact. Deadpool was not going to be a part of our Saturday panel, so we wanted to have this extra panel so people could see the cast before they go see the movie.

Got it. Every Marvel movie obviously has spoilers in it, and some are larger than others. How would you rank Deadpool & Wolverine in terms of the level of stuff that's gonna happen that might affect the MCU spoilers versus some of the other Marvel movies?

FEIGE: I don't know what the criteria is, or what the levels are that you're talking about. I will say there's lots of stuff that happens in it. The most important things that happen in it happen between the characters, and that's what the whole movie is about—that emotional journey between the two of them and some friends they meet along the way.

Is Cassandra Nova the Next Thanos?

Cassandra is a character that many people have been waiting to see. Cassandra could be a Thanos-level character in terms of power. What is that character's power level, if you will, compared to some of the other characters?

FEIGE: She is extremely powerful. When we meet her in this movie, I'm not sure she's ever encountered anybody that she couldn't swat away. She, as you say, is very, very powerful.

The future of Ryan and Hugh in the MCU, do you even know what might happen with them in the future, or is it sort of like “Let's get through this and then…?"

FEIGE: It's definitely, "Let's get through this." But as we sit here talking, and the movie comes out in a week, and the movie's been finished for a couple of weeks, there's certainly been a lot of discussions of, " That was fun. What should we do next? "

Werewolf by Night and the Guardians [of the Galaxy] special — I love these special presentations, and all the fans did as well. What do we need to do to get more special presentations?

FEIGE: There will be more. You just have to wait.

Are you actually actively in development on one right now?

FEIGE: Yes.

Something I've heard rumors about for a long time, and I've been waiting to ask you about, is a lot of the contracts for Fox characters with Marvel expire in 2025, and that was one of the reasons why we were waiting a little while to get mutants and other characters. Is there any truth to that?

FEIGE: Actor contracts?

No, producer contracts. I'd heard a lot of people were attached to things, and contracts expire in 2025.

FEIGE: No, I don't even know all the contracts. There are people who are attached for much longer than 2025, and will be a part of them. But I don't think that was any magic year.

How Has the MCU Changed Since 2020?

What have the last few years done to impact Marvel's future? How have plans changed as a result of the last few years, or have they not changed, and everything is still status the way it was?

FEIGE: I think they've changed. The release cadence has changed because of the pandemic and because of the strike. Deadpool & Wolverine being our only movie this year was never initially the plan, and I think that ended up working out pretty well. I like the notion of all of this attention being on one movie and a movie that's gonna be able to carry that attention because it's quite good.

I've said that building a fictional narrative, whether it's been in the comics over 85 years or in the MCU over the last 17 years, is a living, breathing, evolving thing. I love the idea that people think we have a plan that is set in granite, and then we just follow it. We have a plan that's set in sand, and then we modify it.

Which Marvel Characters From the Comics Should Join the MCU?

Despite not quite soaring to the heights of the Infinity War era, the MCU is showing no signs of slowing down as Marvel boss Kevin Feige prepares to drop several major announcements next weekend at SDCC. While on the press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige revealed that Richard Rider aka Nova is finally coming to the MCU with his own TV series. Between this new addition, Wolverine himself, and the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, I want to know which Marvel comics characters — that we haven't seen on screen yet — are you dying to see join the MCU?

Do you have the next four years figured out at this point, or is it still very much, “We're figuring it out?”

FEIGE: We have our hopes and dreams for the next five years figured out, and we will adapt as reality adapts us. But with the X-Men and with the Fantastic Four, and with all those thousands of characters we got from Fox, that really did help us chart out, with excitement and enthusiasm, decades of potential blue sky ideas of what we could do. And the response to X-Men ‘97, which the Marvel animation team did such a great job on, only reinvigorated us. The X-Men soap opera has been done very well in certain movies in the past, but we really think it’s an untapped reservoir of amazing emotional stories.

Will Marvel and DC Ever Cross Over?

I know this is a long shot, but James Gunn's at DC. You guys are obviously very good friends. The dream for a lot of people is wondering, “Will DC and Marvel ever do something together?” Is that even something that you are thinking about, or are you like, “There is no chance?”

FEIGE: I think about it occasionally, like any fan would think about it. I don't know when in the heck that would ever happen, or how that would happen. But we've been talking too long for me to go, “Never! We'd never be able to do that.” We'll never say never, but no, no plans. I've seen the paparazzi shots of the Superman set looking cool. So he's focusing on that. We're focusing on this.

FEIGE: There's always a chance, Steve. We'll really be focusing on the next movies coming out there.

FEIGE: It's Deadpool Prime. Ryan Reynolds, the main Deadpool, is my favorite. They all look very cool. Headpool, in particular, is ridiculous and looks awesome.

Helping our customers through the CrowdStrike outage

On July 18, CrowdStrike, an independent cybersecurity company, released a software update that began impacting IT systems globally. Although this was not a Microsoft incident, given it impacts our ecosystem, we want to provide an update on the steps we’ve taken with CrowdStrike and others to remediate and support our customers.  

Since this event began, we’ve maintained ongoing communication with our customers, CrowdStrike and external developers to collect information and expedite solutions. We recognize the disruption this problem has caused for businesses and in the daily routines of many individuals. Our focus is providing customers with technical guidance and support to safely bring disrupted systems back online. Steps taken have included:  

  • Engaging with CrowdStrike to automate their work on developing a solution.   CrowdStrike has recommended a workaround to address this issue and has also issued a public statement. Instructions to remedy the situation on Windows endpoints were posted on the Windows Message Center .   
  • Deploying hundreds of Microsoft engineers and experts to work directly with customers to restore services.   
  • Collaborating with other cloud providers and stakeholders, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), to share awareness on the state of impact we are each seeing across the industry and inform ongoing conversations with CrowdStrike and customers.  
  • Quickly posting manual remediation documentation and scripts found here .
  • Keeping customers informed of the latest status on the incident through the Azure Status Dashboard here .  

We’re working around the clock and providing ongoing updates and support. Additionally, CrowdStrike has helped us develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix for CrowdStrike’s faulty update. We have also worked with both AWS and GCP to collaborate on the most effective approaches.    

While software updates may occasionally cause disturbances, significant incidents like the CrowdStrike event are infrequent. We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines. While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services.  

This incident demonstrates the interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem — global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and other software vendors, and customers. It’s also a reminder of how important it is for all of us across the tech ecosystem to prioritize operating with safe deployment and disaster recovery using the mechanisms that exist. As we’ve seen over the last two days, we learn, recover and move forward most effectively when we collaborate and work together. We appreciate the cooperation and collaboration of our entire sector, and we will continue to update with learnings and next steps.

Project 2025 Explained: What To Know About The Controversial Right-Wing Policy Map For Trump—As He Speaks At RNC

Former President Donald Trump will speak at the Republican National Convention on Thursday after he formally clinched the party’s nomination , bringing renewed attention to Project 2025, a conservative think tank’s wide-ranging blueprint for a potential second Trump term that covers everything from recruiting like-minded personnel to eliminating entire agencies—a platform assembled partly by ex-Trump staffers, though the former president has tried to distance himself.

Project 2025, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation with help from more than 100 other conservative groups , is a multi-part plan for the next conservative administration—namely a Trump presidency—which includes a LinkedIn-style database for presidential personnel hopefuls, training programs for executive branch positions and an as-yet-unreleased “playbook” laying out what Trump should do in his first 180 days.

Though the project is led by the Heritage Foundation and other private third-party groups and is not formally tied to Trump, who has tried to distance himself from the operation, its proposals were developed in part by former members of his administration and other Trump allies, and the ex-president has previously praised Heritage for its policy work.

The project has drawn the most attention for its “Mandate for Leadership,” a 900-page proposed policy agenda that describes itself as a “plan to unite the conservative movement and the American people against elite rule and woke culture warriors,” laying out plans for all aspects of the executive branch.

Personnel: Project 2025 broadly proposes to insert far more political appointees who are ideologically aligned with the president into the executive branch—replacing many of the nonpartisan career civil servants who serve in it now—proposing an executive order that would put political appointees into any “confidential, policy-determining, policymaking, or policy-advocating positions” (which Trump previously did at the end of his presidency, but President Joe Biden then overturned it).

Federal Agencies: It proposes a scaled-down federal government, including the abolishment of multiple agencies—including the Department of Education, Department of Homeland Security, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau—whose remaining departments would be folded into other agencies or privatized, including the Transportation Security Administration.

Transgender Rights: Transgender rights and gender identity beyond biological sex are roundly rejected, with such steps as reinstating the ban on transgender Americans serving in the military, prohibiting public school educators from referring to students by anything other than their birth name and pronouns without parental permission, and ensuring no federal funds are used to provide gender-affirming care.

DEI and LGBTQ Rights: Project 2025 seeks to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs from throughout the federal government and in universities, and while it doesn’t outlaw same-sex marriage, it supports “nuclear families” that include a “married mother, father, and their children,” and calls for restricting laws that bar discrimination on the basis of sex to exclude sexual orientation and gender identity.

Climate Change: The proposal would undo much of the federal government’s climate work, including by leaving the Paris Climate Agreement, overhauling the Department of Energy to promote oil and natural gas and deemphasize green energy sources, removing the Department of Agriculture’s focus on sustainability and curtailing climate research.

Abortion: While Project 2025 doesn’t explicitly call for an abortion ban, it would take many steps to restrict the procedure, including directing the Food and Drug Administration to revoke its approval of abortion drug mifepristone, using the Comstock Act to block any abortion equipment or medication from being mailed—which abortion rights advocates have said would be a “backdoor” way to ban abortion—barring federal funds being used to provide healthcare coverage for abortion and requiring states to report all abortions that take place there to the federal government.

Education: Project 2025 emphasizes a “school choice” policy that directs public funds to be used for students to attend private or religious schools, bars “critical race theory” from being taught in federally funded schools and advocates for legislation that would allow parents to sue schools they feel have acted improperly—such as by teaching controversial subjects or requiring students to disclose information about their religious beliefs.

Student Loans: Student loan relief efforts would come to an end—including the public service loan forgiveness program and income-driven repayment plans—as the proposal states “borrowers should be expected to repay their loans.”

Big Tech: TikTok would be banned, and the proposal calls for reforming Section 230 —which shields tech companies and social media networks from being sued over content on their platforms—and allowing laws like those passed in Florida and Texas that seek to punish social media companies who ban or suspend users based on their “viewpoints.”

Justice Department: Project 2025 calls for a “top-to-bottom overhaul” of the DOJ and FBI that gets rid of what it calls an “unaccountable bureaucratic managerial class and radical Left ideologues,” proposing an agency that would be more focused on violent crime and filing litigation that’s “consistent with the President’s agenda” and filled with far more political appointees; it also proposes prohibiting the FBI from investigating misinformation or making “politically motivated” moves against U.S. citizens.

Taxes: Project 2025 would seek to get rid of current tax rates and most deductions and credits, instead proposing a 15% rate for anyone under the Social Security wage base ( $168,000 in 2024) and 30% for taxpayers earning more than that—which means the lowest-income taxpayers will now pay more and some higher earners will pay less, and it would also lower the corporate income tax rate to 18%.

Federal Reserve: The project seeks to reform the Federal Reserve by “tak[ing] the monetary steering wheel out of [its] hands and return[ing] it to the people,” which the authors propose could be done by getting rid of the government’s control over the nation’s money entirely—instead leaving it up to banks—or returning to the gold standard, in which the dollar’s value would be tied to a specific weight of gold.

Foreign Relations: Project 2025 emphasizes opposing China, which it describes as “a totalitarian enemy of the United States,” and directs the U.S. to pull out of international organizations when they don’t serve the administration’s interests, including the World Health Organization and various United Nations agencies.

Healthcare: Project 2025 does not seek to overturn the Affordable Care Act, but would make significant cuts to Medicaid and impose work requirements to receive coverage, as well as reform Medicare—including by making Medicare Advantage, a paid supplement to Medicare, the default option for patients.

Is Trump Involved With Project 2025?

Trump has denied any connection to Project 2025, claiming on Truth Social last week that he has “nothing to do with them,” has “no idea” who’s behind the plan and finds some of its ideas “absolutely ridiculous and abysmal.” But many aren’t buying his claims: The team behind Project 2025 includes 140 people who worked for Trump in his administration, according to CNN , including six former Cabinet secretaries and four people he nominated as ambassadors. The ex-president has also seemingly endorsed the project in the past, saying at a 2022 dinner for the Heritage Foundation that the group was “going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do … when the American people give us a colossal mandate.”

What Impact Could Project 2025’s Policies Have?

Experts have warned Project 2025’s proposals could have seismic impacts on how the federal government operates if carried out. In an article for Justia , criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor John May suggested Project 2025’s language endorsing the executive branch being able to “restrain the excesses” of the judicial branch and Congress means “if the President wants to, the President can defy any decision of the Supreme Court, any legislation by Congress, maybe even the act of impeachment and removal from office.”

Who’s Behind Project 2025?

The main team behind Project 2025 includes Heritage Foundation director Paul Gans and former Trump White House personnel leaders Spencer Chretien (who also served as Trump’s special assistant) and Troup Hemenway, according to the project’s website. Other groups listed as participating in the project include ex-Trump adviser Stephen Miller’s America First Legal, legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, Liberty University, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America and Turning Point USA. The 900-page policy agenda was co-authored by a series of conservative figures, with chapters penned by such Trump allies as former Housing Secretary Dr. Ben Carson, former Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli, former HHS Civil Rights Director Roger Severino and former Trump advisor Peter Navarro, who went to prison in March for contempt of Congress.

Will Trump Have To Follow Project 2025’s Plans?

Trump will not be under any obligation to follow Project 2025’s proposals if he wins the presidency, though history suggests he’ll listen to at least some of them. The Heritage Foundation made a similar policy proposal for Trump ahead of his presidency in 2016, and boasted two years into his tenure that Trump had already followed 64% of its recommendations, CBS News notes .

Would Project 2025 Change Social Security?

One area that Project 2025 doesn’t touch on is Social Security benefits and any potential cuts to the program, even as proposals outline changes to numerous other government “entitlements.” Changing Social Security and making cuts to its spending has been a priority for the GOP for decades, though the American public has long opposed slashing benefits. Republicans’ efforts have waned under Trump, however, and the ex-president publicly claimed in March he “will never do anything that will jeopardize or hurt Social Security or Medicare,” after he came under fire for suggesting otherwise in an interview with CNBC.

Surprising Fact

While much of Project 2025’s policy agenda concerns federal agencies, the proposal has also gotten attention for its call to outlaw all pornography, which it claims is tied to “the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children” and is not protected under the First Amendment. Project 2025 calls not only for pornography to be made illegal, but also for anyone involved with its production and distribution to be imprisoned, for any librarians or educators who “purvey it” to be registered as sex offenders and for telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its distribution to be shut down.

Key Background

The Heritage Foundation’s practice of laying out a policy roadmap for a future Republican administration actually dates back to the Reagan era, founder Edwin J. Feulner noted in the afterword of the 2025 edition. The organization first laid out a blueprint in 1981 that President Ronald Reagan ultimately adopted, fulfilling half of its recommendations by the end of his first year in office. The Heritage Foundation has continued to come out with blueprints for potential conservative presidents each election since, it notes, and its 2025 Mandate for Leadership was published in 2023. While it came out last year, Project 2025 gained new attention in the past week since Trump disavowed it—sparking a wave of reports highlighting his ties to the figures behind the project that debunk his claims. Democrats have also used the controversial proposal as a key talking point and argument for why the left should unite behind President Joe Biden and focus on defeating Trump, particularly as Biden’s candidacy has come under widespread scrutiny in the wake of the president’s poor debate performance in June.
