Skidmore unveils the Valentine Boathouse

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – About 100 guests gathered to celebrate the opening of Skidmore's newest building, the Valentine Boathouse on Fish Creek on Friday, Oct. 19. Skidmore's men's and women's crews will benefit from the boathouse, which is named for Trustee Peg Valentine and Mike Valentine, parents of Martha, a 2009 Skidmore graduate and former rower.

The three-building complex, located at 89 Stafford Bridge Road, includes a completely renovated main building (previously the only building) that houses eights, fours, and quads. The new center building, known as the "Team Building," has a team meeting and workout space with ergometers, a locker room and office space for coaches. The second new building is a sculling pavilion that houses singles and doubles.

"Completing and now dedicating the Valentine Boathouse will allow our teams to take a big step forward," said Gail Cummings-Danson , Director of Athletics at Skidmore. "With pride, our rowers and coaches will train in a facility that enhances their opportunity for success and speaks to the growing tradition of support." "Without the Valentine family gift and the support of others, our three-building complex would not have been possible," Cummings-Danson said.

Skidmore Crew Head Coach Jim Tucci said the interior of the new Team Building is reminiscent of a boathouse one might find on the historic Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. "It has a wonderful sophistication, as well as the functional aspects that will allow us the potential for optimal performance," Tucci said. "The new boathouse will be an inspiring venue to row from, and will increase pride in the program from rowers and supporters," Tucci said, adding that the project would help in the recruitment of scholar-athletes in the years ahead.

Olivia Del Brocco '19, Skidmore women's crew captain, was excited about the new digs. "We are so fortunate to be here celebrating a project that has been rumored about since our freshman year. I cannot express my excitement that, as seniors, we will get a full season's use out of this new boathouse."

"Our team now has a space where, not only will we show up to practice and work out, but where we can also spend time together and bond as a team unit," Del Brocco added. "This opportunity will only help us grow as a team, both in the spring season and in years to come." Ross Powell '19, captain of the men's crew team, agrees. "These buildings next to us foreshadow the bright future that Skidmore Rowing has," Powell said. "Some teams don't have boathouses, and we have three…what more could we possibly need! I want to thank all of the donors here today for providing us this great opportunity, and really, for spoiling all of us."

The Thoroughbreds end the fall portion of the schedule hosting the Head of the Fish regatta, held at the Fish Creek Course on Saturday. The Valentine Boathouse is part of  Creating Our Future: The Campaign for Skidmore , an effort to raise $200 million by 2020 for Skidmore's future.  Creating Our Future  also will increase funding for scholarships and financial aid, the Skidmore Fund, the Tang Teaching Museum, Athletics/Health & Wellness, the Center for Integrated Sciences and career development and transformative experiences for Skidmore students.

Build History as explained by Seller:

"Designed by Tony Skidmore, MINA of Vancouver BC in about 1977; the design was commissioned by Harmon and Hey, then living in Southern California. Jerry Hey was an experienced single-handed sailor whose boat was partially rolled in a near collision with a merchant vessel off the California coast, and the deck house was torn off. He commissioned the Tumbleweed design as flush-deck boat because of that experience. Tony Skidmore was also an experienced single-handed sailor, having sailed from England to Vancouver BC.

I was attracted to the modernity of the cold-molded construction, and purchased the plans in early 1979. I built the boat in three locations - a barn in Merrimack, MA, a boat shed in Hampstead, NH, and our present boat shed in Lincolnville, ME. The first two years involved a full traditional lofting, with the keel laminated directly over the lofting and the frames lofted over a mylar transfer on a plywood platform.

Construction then moved to Hampstead, NH from 1980 until 1996. In that time I build the hull upside down, turned it over and did much of the interior, then finally built the deck. When we moved to Maine in 1996 the hull was complete, including keel and ballast, and the engine was installed.

Construction advanced to the point of launching the boat in August 2000 at Rockport Marine, at which time the rig was installed and sails built. That year the boat was sailable but with much work remaining below. Since then a long series of projects has seen the completion of the interior and many improvements, the latest being updated water tanks.

I balanced all this construction activity with regular sailing on chartered or friends' boats, mostly in Maine. This experience strongly influenced the details I build into  CEOL MOR."

Sailing Qualities:

These comments reflect both our experience and our age - we have been able to sail and enjoy the boat into our late 70s, although it is now too powerful for us to manage safely and prudently.

Maximum speed is about 7 knots, occasionally approaching 8 knots in a reach. The boat tacks through about 110 degrees. The boat has a comfortable motion in a chop, and moves well in any sea state we have experienced locally. The few times we have been caught out in stronger winds than we would like (up to 35 knots+) the boat has continued to behave well.

The boat sails best on its feet - we have found that taking a reef (around 15 knots) has the boat moving more comfortably, faster, and pointing better than hanging on. Our most pleasant experiences have been on Penobscot Bay in 12-15 knots.

All our sailing has been coastal sailing, mostly from Penobscot Bay to Frenchman's Bay. Our typical sailing vacation has been 10 days to two weeks, living aboard during that time. The boat is most pleasant for two people to spend time at a good anchorage or mooring.

I am sure the boat would do well for younger or more robust sailors anywhere, including blue water. It was designed as a blue water boat, and I feel it clearly has the qualities which would enable highly capable ocean sailing."

Switzer Reservoir

skidmore yachts

The state manages the lake as a “put and grow” fishery; meaning trout are stocked when they are only a few inches in length and left to grow in the lake. Trout over 3 pounds have been caught from Switzer! The lake is fished best from a boat or kayak. Trout anglers should target the lake at specific times of the year

April and May provide surface temperatures in the 50s and 60s , and trout will be in the top 10 feet of the water column . Schools of brook and brown trout will feed on or near the surface, eating midges, BWO’s and small baitfish, especially just before dark. It is not uncommon to have the opportunity to cast into large schools of 12-15-inch trout. During the summer, trout will head deep under the thermocline.

In the fall, when surface temperatures cool, trout return to the surface, feeding in preparation to spawn. During wet years, Skidmore Fork will be flowing into the lake, and the brookies and browns will run up the creek to spawn. If the water is low and not flowing above ground into the lake, the trout will school up in the shallows at the head of the lake. This typically occurs at the end of October . Anglers usually have about a month to target the trout before spawn. Once winter arrives, the trout will again return below the thermocline.

Warmwater fishermen can target largemouth bass, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish and pike . Many anglers find the fishing on Switzer to be challenging due to its depth and clarity . The fish could be 50 feet down and unaware of your fly, or 5 feet down and see you coming . Just like with the trout, targeting species at the right time of year is critical.

Warm-water species will be up in the lake and most active spring through early fall. Largemouth will be in the shallows on their nests in mid- April . Pike populations have increased in the last few years, and anglers have had luck sight fishing large streamers to them.

Switzer Reservoir is one of the most beautiful lakes in Virginia; give it a try.

Sharing my creative passions and a love for the natural world., skidmore scooter – a plywood whaleback.

Some early memories

sm Skidmore Scooter - three-quarter

The Skidmore Scooter as she sat

This shapely gunning boat is one I have never seen in use – and yet it holds a special place in my heart.  It was built by a man whom I recall vividly – and fondly – from my early youth.  The boat was built – most likely in the 1950s or 60s – by Brud Skidmore.  It is now owned by Red Oster and I first saw it earlier this year in Red’s backyard in Sayville.  Red is a bayman year-round and guides diver shoots out of one of the last “big rigs” on Great South Bay.

The Great South Bay Scooter

Like many terms specific to the sport of waterfowling, particular names for boats, gear and even the birds themselves evolved locally and remain today as relics of an indigenous culture.  Such is the case with the name “Scooter”.  The original Scooter was “invented” in Bellport Bay – the eastern reaches of Great South Bay – in 1874 by Wilbur R. Corwin.  It was originally designed to negotiate a frozen bay that – thanks to the tides – was perforated with patches of open water – what we call either “water holes” or “air holes”.  A Scooter could be dragged, piked or sailed over ice of all kinds – and could also be sailed or rowed across open water.  In fact, it could “scoot” across the ice, through the water, then back out onto the ice again.  The hulls were carefully shaped to run over the ice on metal-shod runners and could go from water to ice either forward or backward.  Scooters caught on quickly – to the east into Narrow and Moriches Bays and west throughout Great South Bay.  They became the winter vessel for gunners and baymen and even for the Lifesaving Service  (now Coast Guard).  When the battery was finally outlawed on Great South Bay in 1935, the cumbersome winged contrivances were replaced by Scooters anchored in the open bay.  Many, like the Skidmore Scooter, retained the capabilities to hunt in either frozen or unfrozen waters.

sm Skidmore GSB SEPIA

Great South Bay

The well-known Scooters from the east were built by Wilbur Corwin, Benjamin Hallock and Oliver Howell.  To the west, one of the better-known builders was the firm of Dodge & Crowell – hard on the east bank of Orowoc Creek in Islip.  As with any specialized craft, the details were refined to meet the local conditions.  Whereas the eastern Scooters were designed for use in the ice and also as “grassboats” to hunt the saltmarsh, many of the western boats were designed for use in the ice and in the open bay.  Hiding best in the open bay resulted in higher-crowned decks and lower gunwales – what is known as the “whaleback” design.  Brud Skidmore built his Scooter from the lines of a Dodge & Crowell whaleback Scooter.  Whereas the Dodge & Crowell craft were carvel-planked of White Cedar over bent (steamed) frames, Brud built his of 1/4″ marine plywood (fir) over plywood frames.

Brud Skidmore - inboard circa 1960

Brud in his woodshop at East Islip Lumber , circa 1960

Brud Skidmore

I probably met Brud before I could remember anything.  Brud was a friend of my Dad .  My Dad had worked at Brud’s East Islip Lumber before becoming a State Policeman and – always working at least two jobs to provide for his family – had his woodworking shop there for a few years, probably in the late 1950s.  I recall being in the shop with my Dad after dinner.  I would play among the sawdust and cutoffs on the floor while be built cabinets and – along with Brud – the occasional boat.   Finally, I just learned from my Mom that “Brud” means “brother” – a common nickname among the Dutch and Germans.

The Big Rigs

Like my Dad and so many others of that era, Brud loved nothing more than hunting Broadbill – the Greater Scaup that wintered on Great South Bay in prodigious numbers – well over 100,000 birds each year.  While Broadbill could – and certainly were – hunted from shore rigs and in the ice, the “ultimate” was to pursue these finest of gamebirds with a “big rig”.  A big rig was simply the rig used to hunt Broadbill in an open Great South Bay – and it evolved directly from the battery rigs.  It usually consisted of three different vessels – each with its own purpose.  The tender (or “mother ship”) was a big cabin boat – replete with stove – that towed both a stool boat and a Scooter.  The stool boat held all of the decoys and was used to set and pick up the rig.  The Scooter was the floating blind from which gunners shot.  Gunners cycled in and out of the Scooter during the day, ferried back and forth by either the stool boat or the tender.  When not laying in the Scooter, gunners could observe all of the action from the comfort of a warm, dry cabin, often with hot drinks or soup at hand.

sm Skidmore 1 - As She Sat

The work at hand

Happily, the years and the elements have wrought only minor damage to the Skidmore Scooter.  When I met Red – and his brother Steve – in the rain last Saturday, the obvious damage included rot in the hatch cover and in a bit of the coamings, a few “penetrations” of the ‘glass skin, and some suspicious softening around the pipe oarlock stanchions.  So, the Scooter was lashed to my duckboat trailer and rode happily the 250 or so miles north to Pencil Brook Boatworks. Not surprisingly, Red also sent a few Herter’s Model 81 Brant stool north with me – for their own brand of special attention.

Gallery # 1 – Admission & Diagnosis

1 - The profile shows the tall whaleback design

The work begins

Working clean and comfortable

Up on the “high horses”, the Brud Skidmore is upside down so I can work “comfortably” on the inside – especially on the stanchions.

I began by cutting and grinding back the ‘glass where it had been penetrated.  The nose – around the bow eye – was the worst – but it still was not bad.  The wood had not gotten soft and mostly needed a thorough drying-out.  There were a few more minor penetrations toward the stern.  They required a quick fairing back with the grinder (40-grit on a 7-inch disc) and then time to dry.  Rot in the coaming required me to excise about 24 inches on the starboard side and both oarlock stanchions required major – and challenging – attention.

Gallery # 2 – The Repairs

skidmore yachts

Other minor tasks included a permanent fairlead for the stern – so the Brud Skidmore will lay at anchor without yawing.

Fairlead machining

The fairlead is fully machined – with bandsaw and router while still attached to the original piece of lumber – some vertical grain Douglasfir.  It was finally cut free on the table saw.  Then, it got two sealing coats of epoxy before it was fastened to the deck with SS screws and thickened epoxy.

The next job was a new hatch – from scratch.  I began by scribing the crown of the deck forward of the cockpit to establish the lower curve.  The upper curve was similar but the crown was drawn on a 47-inch radius.  I did not use the scribed crown of the deck because it flattened off a bit on the centerline of the boat.  The 47-inch radius became the “master curve” and was used for all of the transverse frames.

1 Front coaming - scribed

The framing is all Cypress – and the sheathing is 1/4-inch Lauan plywood – scavenged from a pattern on another project.  After clamping with Titebond II, the plywood was nailed to each frame with #14 x 7/8″ bronze boat nails.

3 Cockpit Hatch

The outside of the hatch was was sheathed with 4-oz ‘glass and epoxy and the underside was sealed with grey primer.

New Cockpit Hatch - from stern

All done.  It was important to owner Red Oster to return the boat to a sound condition – but at least as important was honoring Brud.

Thanks for the interesting over view on the Brud Skidmore. After viewing an historical Ariel photo of East Islip lumber yard it led me to this. Tim Dowd

Kostroma: The home of Russia’s Snegurochka, the snow maiden

Who is Snegurochka?

Snegurochka is the granddaughter and assistant of “Ded Moroz” also known as Father Frost, Russia’s version of Santa Claus. While Santa Claus is rumored to have residences in Finland and the North Pole, Ded Moroz is a proud patriot and maintains a home in Veliky Ustyug in the Vologda Region. His estate is a major tourist attraction receiving more than 200,000 guests a year. See  Veliky Ustyug: The Russian Santa's Home .

Snegurochka does not have roots in Slavic mythology and only came into being in the late 19th century. However, to many Snegurochka appears to be as eternal as Russia itself.

Snegurochka is born

There were predecessors to Ostrovsky’s version. Alexander Afanasyev, considered the Russian equivalent of the Brothers Grimm, wrote a story in 1869 about a character called “Snegurka.” The tale tells involves the poor peasants Ivan and Marya, who build a doll made of snow that comes to life.

In Ostrovsky’s version Snegurochka is the daughter of Spring the Beauty and Father Frost. She longs for human companionship, but lacks the capacity to love. Her mother bestows this ability on her, but as she is made of snow, she melts when her heart warms after she falls in love.

By the reign of Nicholas II, Snegurochka had become associated with winter holiday celebrations. She was part of Christmas events until the Soviet Union banned religious holidays in the years after the Revolution. She was revived when New Year’s became the major winter holiday, replacing Christmas, in 1935. Since then Snegurochka, who had now become Father Frost’s granddaughter (instead of his daughter), has become a mainstay of holiday parties all over Russia. Along with her grandfather, she usually arrives bearing gifts.
