Over the last decade or so, there has been an increasing emphasis on sailing kit designed specifically for women, including women’s boating shoes.
This is great news as, while some pieces of kit such as lifejackets are reasonably acceptable in unisex form, traditional leather deck shoes designed for men are often impractical and a poor fit for women sailors.
As one of the most essential items of sailing kit, before choosing a pair of women’s boating shoes, it’s therefore worth looking at the many different styles and options available.
While budget is often a starting point in a decision-making process, it’s not always a case of spending the most, but more about what how you will be using the shoes, and how they fit when worn.
For relaxed sailing a good quality pair of traditional style leather deck/boat shoes is still popular, as they are both practical while sailing, non-marking on deck, but also look good and are comfortable to wear on shore.
For more active crew work, racing, and wetter keelboats, there are now many women’s designs of technical sailing trainers/sneakers. These are generally lightweight, supportive and snug fitting, while most sailing trainers are also self-draining/quick drying. Be wary, however, of prolonged wear on land as the super-grippy soles often wear down quickly if walking on rough ground.
9 of the best women’s boat shoes
Gill pursuit trainer.
With 45 years of marine footwear development to its name, Gill knows a thing or two about sailors’ technical requirements. The Pursuit Trainers are designed for ultimate comfort, with a lightweight design, and smart water drainage system, that showcases the company’s latest sailing shoe innovations.
The outsoles are molded using a non-slip compound to work in both wet and dry conditions, while the insoles have been designed with impact-absorbing qualities. They also feature a quick-lace adjustment system to ensure a secure fit.

Musto ladies dynamic pro ii adapt.
Musto has worked hard to produce sailing shoes that provide ultimate stability on deck. Thanks to their construction of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) welded overlay in the uppers, there is plenty of lateral support in the Dynamic Pro II Adapt shoes, as well as shock absorbing heel cages for a secure, comfortable fit.
For extra confidence and comfort when the deck is wet, these shoes feature Musto’s GripDeck rubber and GripFlex tread on the soles, and mono mesh upper fabric, which offers good ventilation and is quick drying.
These shoes also features XPL drainage – a technology designed to disperse and divert water away from areas prone to water ingress.

Wuzzos Whitaker
If you are looking for a pair of practical, yet extremely stylish hand-sewn leather deck shoes, Wuzzos Whitaker Boat Shoes should definitely be a consideration. What’s more, they can also be personalised.
As well as good looks, and day-long comfort, these shoes feature Wuzzos’ standard stitched and bonded, performance UV-repelling rubber, non-marking soles with striped treads that offer excellent grip on deck.
Like all quality deck shoes, the leather laces run continuously around the top of the shoe with the 360-degree lacing system. The Wuzzos leather is also infused with ‘Micro-Fresh’ – a smart antimicrobial technology that offers antifungal and antibacterial protection.
With exceptional attention to detail in its design and technology, it’s hardly surprising Wuzzos are the preferred brand for personalized/branded deck shoes at Yacht Club de Monaco, Fairline Yachts and a growing list of superyacht teams.
Personalisation is simple. Just click the box when ordering and you will be guided through the process.

These ultra-lightweight, sneaker-style deck shoes have been designed to ‘keep you glued on board’ thanks to ultra-high grip soles from Zhik’s non-marking proprietary ‘ZK Soles’.
They also look good and, for the super-active sailor, are ultra-lightweight yet tough-looking, comfortable and have a built-in drainage system.
According to Zhik, the ‘one-way’ drainage system within the soles of these shoes are created by molded channels cast into the mid-soles, which instantly channels water away from underfoot for grip, but doesn’t let it back in when water is running across the deck.
The construction of strong, perforated mesh upper fabric makes the Zhik Fuze breathable and quick drying. Inside the shoes, antibacterial coating has been added to the fast-drying inner liners.
For extra protection when the going gets tough, there is PU reinforcement in the upper, heel and toe areas.

As an endorsement of its functionality, Decathlon say the 100 design ‘has been tested and validated throughout its design phase by the Tribord sailing team in calm to variable sailing conditions (choppy water, small swell, average wind speed of Force 5), in warm and sunny weather (average outdoor temperature of 25°C).
‘These tests on the level of grip during use were carried out mainly on a Figaro and an Open 5.70, in different positions (helmsman, pitman, trimmer, midbowman).’

The Pentle shoes in Chatham’s G2 collection are among the company’s best sellers. They are sturdy-looking classic leather boat shoes and offer all the style and comfort associated with the Chatham brand.
One of key features of this pair of boat shoes is Chatham’s internal Sole Spring – a tri density comfort technology used to enhance comfort and give plenty of absorption.
The shoes are also anti-bacterial. To achieve this Chatham uses an open cell polyurethane, which allows the material to breathe, and the moisture to wick away.
For the classic look, the Pentle shoes are available in walnut nubuck leather with triple-eyelets, side lacing, contrast stitching and the all-important non-slip and non-marking soles.

What to look for in women’s boat shoes
Desire to wear – Comfort is extremely important, so try on as many pairs as you can before you make a purchase. Synthetic trainer-style shoes tend not to stretch after use so if you are going down the ‘trainer’ route, choose a size that fits well initially.
With quality-made leather deck shoes such as Wuzzos and Orca Bay, which have thicker leather and no synthetic lining, will mold nicely to your foot with wear. If that’s the fit you’re looking for, choose a pair that fits more snugly instead of the ‘next size up’, because the leather will soon soften around your foot.
Style v practicality – As well as looking good, bear in mind practicalities. For hardcore sailing, boat shoes need to fit securely around the foot so they don’t come off when scrambling across the deck in slippery, wet conditions.
Ideally, leather deck shoes should have what is known as a 360 degree lacing system where each shoe uses one continuous lace threaded along the side to the front tie eyelets to allow fine tuning for a snug fit.
Safety – Staying safe on deck/around the dockside is essential so choose a pair of women’s sailing shoes specifically designed for sailing with good grip. Make sure also they have non-marking soles.

Summer is in full swing, and this year, it’s all about spending time on the open water. Whether you’re sipping an Aperol spritz in the Hamptons or soaking up the sun in the French Riviera, if you’re spending time on or near the water, boat shoes are a must.
What makes a good boat shoe, you ask? As a girl that grew up on the canals of Long Island, trust me when I say it’s not one size fits all. When traveling and exploring new places, it’s important to keep in mind what you’ll be doing, where you’ll be walking and what exactly you need from your shoe to keep you comfortable in all situations. If you know you’ll be walking a bit to and from the dock, a shoe with arch support is a must — but if you’re rocking your flats on a yacht, breathability and water resistance is key.
No matter what's on your nautical agenda, you've got plenty of options to choose from. From iconic Sperrys to more high-fashion Sebagos, this country club staple is back in style just in time for summer.
Looking to jump on the trend? We scoured the internet for the chicest and most versatile boat shoes around. Read on for some shoe inspiration for your summer adventures.

Sperry women's original two-eye boat shoe.
These are incredibly comfortable, breathable, and stylish.
The heel can be a bit tight while you're breaking these in.

These are my favorite for days spent on the hull, whether I'm fishing or simply enjoying the sun.
In addition, Sperry’s stain- and water-resistant design also has rust-proof eyelets, making these shoes durable and built to last through all sorts of oceanside adventures. The lacing system is 360 degrees, offering a secure fit so your shoe will stay put, no matter if you’re walking miles to the ocean or wading through rocky waters. Best yet? The hardest part of every vacation is packing your bag without going over the weight limit. Though leather boat shoes are the most traditional, they are certainly not the most lightweight, and they can be a bit hot to wear in warmer climates, which can make traveling with them a pain.
A canvas shoe such as the Sperry Women’s Lounge Away 2 Boat Shoe is an excellent alternative, providing a lightweight option for packing while also being versatile for a variety of activities and events. Best Water-resistant
Sebago portland roughout boat shoes.
The moccasin toe design allows you to wear these to work, the beach, or out on the town for versatile travel needs.
The color is not as rich in person as it appears online.
The Sebago Portland Roughout Boat Shoe offers a happy medium between practicality and the classic boat shoe aesthetic. We also love that the leather sock lining offers an extra level of comfort, so you can easily wear them on deck or while wandering around a seaside town.
Tips for Buying Women's Boat Shoes
Prioritize shoes with great traction.
If you’re going boating, whether that’s cruising on a yacht or doing a bit of sailing, it’s important to buy shoes with traction to avoid any injuries or mishaps. Look for shoes with rubber or vinyl soles to help create traction and ensure you’ll remain safe. Rubber is likely your best bet, however, as its firm and grippy material can stick to the ground with ease and allows for liquid to disperse easily. Rubber also won’t leave any scuff marks on the boat, so it's a win-win.
Find the right balance between comfort and style
We all love a cute pair of shoes, but comfort is just as important, especially when traveling to new places. Depending on the activities you have planned, you’ll want to take a closer look at the materials to determine what is best for you. Heading out on the boat to explore a local fishing town? A canvas shoe with rubber soles will be the better choice. Meeting friends out at a fun, local restaurant? Leather will be your best friend (so long as it stretches over time).
Do keep in mind where and how often you wear your shoes. Wearing the same pair of shoes for multiple functions is a necessity when traveling (when aiming to pack light) but it can also affect the soles, if over worn. If you plan to do a lot of walking on cobblestone streets, you may want to invest in a separate pair of boat shoes for when you’re actually boating, so you don't wear away the rubber and risk reducing grip and traction.
Boat shoes are designed to be worn without socks, which is what gives it that nautical look and feel. Though if you are a sock lover, you absolutely can wear them with your boat shoes — truly, anything goes and it is all about preference, comfort, and style.
The break-in process is a necessary evil for most boat shoes, especially those made with leather or similarly stiff materials. The amount of time and process are different for each shoe, so be sure to consult the manufacturer’s recommended instructions to ensure you are breaking in your shoes as quickly and easily as possible.
If you have a big trip or event coming up, try wearing your new kicks around the house for a few days or even weeks to help them mold to your feet. When breaking in, you can also wear chunky socks with your leather shoes to help provide a comfy fit in no time.

There are several different styles of the best women’s sailing shoes available in the marketplace. Although they are called boat shoes, not all of them are as effective as you may desire if you are a serious sailor. While the name implies that they are primarily to be worn when boating, some styles have a more casual flavor to them. As such, they are more suited to wearing onshore.
Most women’s boat shoes, particularly when worn with socks, can easily substitute sneakers or loafers, depending on the function. It is because of the design and construction material that they are so versatile. However, with this in mind, here is a list of things to look for and what you will typically find when shopping for the best boat shoes for women:
- Uppers are traditionally found in mid to dark-brown leathers. More contemporary styles feature canvas and leather uppers in different color choices as well as in numerous patterns.
- Uppers should be water and stain-resistant.
- Construction is often hand-sewn and top-stitched.
- The overall design would be identified as ‘ moc-toe ’ in construction.
- Lacing systems vary but commonly include a 360-degree design.
- Boat shoes typically have two or three sets of eyelets.
- Laces come in different materials but usually match the uppers.
- Rubber soles are usually white and are always non-marking.
- Soles have patterns carved into them to provide grip and to flush away water.
- Shock absorption features appear in many styles.
- Comfort in design and padding (often with removable liners) are typical.
- Breathability comes from mesh panels and lightweight construction.
- Many styles offer quick-dry materials in the uppers.
As you can tell, the details listed above can easily describe more than just women’s deck shoes. For serious sailors, not all of these factors make for good sailing shoes. As mentioned, some boat shoes are a good choice onboard boats and yachts, while other shoes in this category are best worn on dry land and not used for any kind of sailing activity.
Regardless, for a serious sailor, boat shoes serve a very different purpose than many of the shoe styles that fall under the actual name of ‘boat shoes.’ To find out more about the best sailing shoes for men and women that are specifically designed for sailing yachts, dinghies, and sailboards, click here .
How To Properly Care For Boat Shoes
Because boat shoes are exposed to elements that regular shoes are not typically (sun and saltwater) they require special care. By taking these precautions, your boat shoes will last longer and perform at their best at those times you need them most:
- Clean the leather frequently with water-based cream shoe polish. Apply a leather conditioner to maintain the flexibility and water resistance of the leather.
- Do not use alcohol-based or silicone polish.
- Brush frequently to remove dirt, dust, and salt deposits.
- Clean suede boat shoes with cornmeal massages. Let sit overnight then brush clean.
- You should hand wash canvas boat shoes unless otherwise noted.
- Dry at room temperature. Do not dry in the sun.
- Store with shoe trees to keep their shape intact. Store shoes in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew.
- Put on with a shoehorn to keep the back of the shoes in proper form.
- Monitor sole condition and seek repairs when needed. Replace shoes when the soles show signs of wear to maintain traction and stability on the deck.
Important Features of Boat Shoes
When choosing the perfect boat shoes for women, consider specific features. Finding the right combination of comfort and functionality is vital to ensure your happiness with them. Factor the following main considerations into your selection process:
- Comfort : Put comfort at the top of your list when choosing new boat shoes. If you anticipate wearing them for long hours, then you will want to ensure that a well-cushioned insole is part of the shoe construction. This, combined with arch support will reduce the development of pain and fatigue when worn for extended activities. Also, the fit of the show on your foot is crucial. Boat shoes that fit poorly can cause blisters and other forms of foot pain.
- Durability : Boat shoes made from high-quality materials will generally last longer. The better choices are those made from either durable synthetic materials or genuine leather. Look closely at the shoe construction making note of the stitching and other details. A well-built shoe will give you countless hours of service. Plus, there are two benefits to factoring durability into your boat shoe search: you will contribute to sustainable fashion practices and receive a good return on your investment.
- Traction : Boat shoes typically stand out from other types of sports shoes simply because of the type of traction they provide. A good pair of boat shoes will keep your feet where you plant them or help you move around without slipping or falling, even on wet surfaces. The soles of boat shoes are specially designed and contain patterns that grip well on wet decks and slippery surfaces. The superior traction found on boat shoes makes them a good choice for not just boating. Walking on docks, taking strolls on the waterfront, or enjoying activity on a rainy day are all possible with the safety that boat shoe traction offers.
- Breathability : Look for boat shoes that contain either mesh panels or perforated leather as part of the design. These features provide breathability which keeps your feet cool and dry. Also, these features add ventilation to the shoes. This is important as ventilation keeps feet from experiencing discomfort and contributes to foot hygiene by reducing odor and eliminating the conditions that may otherwise lead to the development of bacterial growth.
Versatility and Beyond Boating
Although they are called boat shoes, they are for boating and so much more. Known as a staple in women’s fashion, boat shoes have become versatile over the years which has allowed them to fit into so many different settings. This is why adding boat shoes to your wardrobe is a wise decision. The style, comfort, and functionality of boat shoes perfectly fit many different occasions. Some of their most common uses include:
- Outdoor Gatherings : The blend of casual comfort and subtle sophistication that come from boat shoes make them a perfect addition to your wardrobe when attending one of many different types of outdoor gatherings. They fit well at garden parties, picnics, or barbecues.
- Vacations : Traveling across the country or to exotic overseas locations, boat shoes are a great companion due to their versatility. Because they are easy to wear and lightweight, they can easily be packed into luggage. They also look great worn with shorts, skirts, or sundresses.
- Everyday Wear : Because of their timeless style, boat shoes have become part of everyday fashion. They are comfortable and functional when worn to run errands around town or when spending time with friends. Plus, they can be easily paired with any outfit thanks to their classic designs and neutral colors.
- Casual Work Attire : If you work at a place where the dress code is business casual, boat shoes can easily become your go-to choice for work footwear. They pair well with blazers, blouses, and tailored trousers. Boat shoes will also tone down the look of your outfit by bringing a laid-back elegance to your ensemble.
- Weekend Escapes : Whether you’re exploring the mountains or walking the city streets, you’ll find boat shoes a welcome addition to any weekend adventure. Their effectiveness stems from their construction – sturdy soles and durable build. Boat shoes ensure your feet remain comfortable and offer the necessary grip for any surface.
Boat Shoes For Women FAQs
How should women’s boat shoes fit and what sizes are available.
You should ensure your boat shoes are comfortable with a secure fit that is neither too tight nor too loose. Consider these tips:
– Snug Fit : Boat shoes should have a snug fit around the heel and instep. This ensures that your foot does not slip out of the shoe when walking. – Toe Space : The boat shoe should have enough room in the toe box to permit you to move your toes with ease. They should not feel squeezed or cramped. – Arch : There should be enough arch support to keep your feet comfortable when wearing them for extended periods. – Heel : The boat shoe should have enough room for a little heel movement. If the show slips off your heel, the size is too big.
As for sizing for women, boat shoes usually range in size from US size 5 to 12. Keep in mind that sizing may vary depending on the brand and some manufacturers produce boat shoes in half sizes which can help you find a better fit.
What are some popular materials used for women’s boat shoes?
There are several different types of materials used in women’s boat shoes. They include:
– Leather : This is a popular choice for boat shoes as leather is durable, comfortable, and has a classic look. – Canvas : This is a lightweight and breathable material that is commonly used for casual boat shoes. It is easy to clean, and canvas is considered a practical selection. – Suede : As a soft, velvety type of leather, suede is both flexible and comfortable. Its elegant look makes it a great choice for boat shoes. – Nubuck : This is another type of leather that has similar qualities to suede. However, Nubuck is more durable and water-resistant. – Mesh : This lightweight and breathable material is used in many athletic-style boat shoes. It keeps feet cool and dry as it permits maximum airflow. – Synthetics : Boat shoes often come in synthetic materials like polyester or nylon. People choose them often because they are lightweight, water-resistant, and quick-drying.
Which brands of boat shoes do you recommend for women?
Several different brands produce great boat shoes for women. Some popular brands include:
– Sperry : Known well in the sailing community, Sperry was the brand that produced the first-ever boat shoe. They boast a large product line of women’s boat shoes. Sperry uses high-quality materials in their products, designing them for style and comfort. – Helly Hansen : Helly Hansen, a brand with a high-quality outdoor and sailing gear reputation, also boasts a line of women’s boat shoes. They design these shoes with non-slip soles and construct them using water-resistant materials. – Sebago : Sebago, another reputable brand, provides a variety of boat shoes for women. They construct their shoes from high-quality leather and equip them with non-marking, slip-resistant soles. – Timberland : This is a popular outdoor and casual wear brand that also carries women’s boat shoes. These products are made with premium leather and come complete with anti-fatigue technology for all-day comfort.
Are there any specific boat shoes designed for women with wide feet or specific foot problems?
There are boat shoes designed for women with wide feet or specific foot problems. Most brands have wide widths of up to EE or EEE. Others have removable soles which allow some women to insert custom orthotics.
Here are a few examples of shoe brands with special design features to accommodate women with wider feet or other foot issues:
– Sperry : This brand has boat shoes in wide widths and removable insoles. For the extra room in the toe box, Sperry also has a “relaxed” fit option. – Clark’s : This brand features women’s boat shoes with wide widths and cushioned insoles. – Rockport : The women’s boat shoes made by this brand have wide and extra-wide fits and an extra cushioning system that provides additional support. – Vionic : This shoemaker has boat shoes with orthotic insoles and widths ranging from medium, wide, and extra-wide. – Skechers : The boat shoes from this brand have a relaxed fit and memory foam insole for added comfort.
Are boat shoes suitable for other water activities besides boating?
Boat shoes are suitable for occasional water exposure like at the beach or poolside. However, they’re not ideal for activities that involve prolonged submersion or water sports. For those, specialized water shoes are recommended.
Can boat shoes be worn for casual or dressy occasions, or are they only suitable for boating?
Boat shoes, while originally designed for boating, are versatile footwear suitable for casual and semi-casual occasions. They pair well with shorts, jeans, and chinos. However, for formal events, traditional dress shoes are preferable.
There are several different options available in ladies’ deck shoes, even if not all of them are made just for sailing. However, if you are looking specifically for the best boat shoes for women, you are in luck. Manufacturers that are known for their sportswear, and men’s boat shoes in particular, also happen to have ladies’ styles available in their product line.
You really have to be clear on what you intend to use the shoes for as not all boat shoes are suitable for serious sailing. Some of the deck shoes on the market are intended to be used in and best suited for a more casual setting. Although that adds to their versatility, it reduces their value for boating.
Regardless, shoe manufacturers will continue to produce what they call deck shoes. Serious sailors know a good boat shoe when they see one. Even if you don’t own a boat nor do you intend to, you will surely find some boat shoe styles to be comfortable enough to wear casually.
Hopefully, this list of some of the best women’s sailing shoes has helped you decide which pair is right for you.
With so many different types of sailing shoes on the market, it’s interesting to see what other people like to get ideas. So, ladies, if you have a favorite pair of sailing shoes, let us know. What is your pick for the best boat shoes for women?

Whether it's your first time out on the water, going laser sailing, or your umpteenth sailing trip, a good pair of sailing shoes is essential to your safety. Designed specifically for use on wet surfaces and slippery conditions. They'll improve traction and keep your feet comfortable during long days on the boat.
In this guide to sailing shoes, we're highlighting the best sailing shoes on the market from top boat shoe brands and offering helpful tips to ensure you find just the right pair. So grab your sailing hats and let the adventure begin.
What Type Of Shoes Is Best For Sailing?
Sailing shoes are designed specifically for wet conditions, such as on a slippery boat deck or wooden dock. While some are fashioned after athletic shoes, others styles are closer to boots or gaiters. Those referred to as boat shoes or deck shoes are typically made with a canvas or salt water resistant leather upper, a non-marking rubber sole, and a slip-on silhouette similar to a loafer.
Do You Wear Socks With Sailing Shoes?
While some people prefer to go sock-free, most prefer to wear socks with their boat shoes. Without them, you risk getting painful rubs and blisters that can quickly ruin your day on the water. Stick with performance socks designed specifically for use in soggy conditions. Slip a pair of low-cut, no-show socks under your boat shoes for a laid-back, European look that doesn't fall short on protection.
What To Look For In Boat Shoes
Sailing shoes are designed for everything from dinghy sailing to deep-sea fishing, so you'll want to shop for styles designed specifically for your intended end-use. Here are a few key product features that make for a great pair:
Non-slip rubber sole
The primary purpose of sailing shoes is to provide traction. Look for pairs with non-slip, non-marking soles that keep you safe in wet, slippery conditions. Some soles feature durability and anti-slip properties.
Performance fabric
While traditionally crafted with leather, most pairs today are made with quick-drying fabrics with added breathability and water resistance.
Mesh construction
Many boating shoes feature strategically-placed mesh panels to improve ventilation and drain away excess water. They'll help keep your feet dry and comfortable all day long.
Adjustable fit
Any good pair of water shoes is designed with laces or adjustable straps for a customizable fit. If you're shopping for kids, stick with simple velcro straps.
Removable insole
Opt for a pair with fully removable insoles for easy cleaning and faster dry times. Slip them out in between uses so they can fully dry.
Antimicrobial treatments
The best boat shoes are treated with innovative antimicrobial treatments that minimize foot odors, prevent mildew growth, and keep fungal infections at bay.
Avoid flip-flops and open-toe shoes as they are an injury risk, thanks to the number of deck fittings on most yachts.

Boat shoes have always been synonymous with holey, dirty, and stinky for me. My first boat shoes were a pair of mismatched Converse Allstars. After a summer of hard fishing, those shoes could walk on their own. Now, the competition to create the ultimate boat shoe has produced next level footwear that is comfortable and quick-drying; a far cry from holey, dirty and stinky. Check out my picks for the best boat shoes, your feet will thank you.

How I Tested the Best Boat Shoes
I’m lucky to have a perfect boat shoe test course in my backyard. Fishing out of Virginia Beach, I can test deck boots from the fall drum run to winter striper run. Mid-Atlantic heat and humidity put deck shoes through the gauntlet. For the ultimate test of boots, I fish for bluefin tuna in late February. Pounding offshore in my center console or creeping into the backwaters in my kayak present diverse obstacles for boat shoes. But slippery decks and saltwater are only half the course, the best boat shoes also need to look good and wear well on land. From washing up the boat to trips to the garden store and evenings at the dockside cafe, the best boat shoes are at home on land and at sea.
Best Boat Shoes: Reviews & Recommendations
Best overall: columbia castback tc.

Key Features
- Omni-Grip sole
- Omni-Max traction
- Stain-Shield upper
- Stain resistant
- Stable foot bed
- Shock absorption
- Reduced stability
- No drain holes
For the past few years I’ve been wearing boat shoes with thick EVA soles. After a long day on the water, my back profits from the foam’s shock absorbing qualities. This summer, I’m wearing Columbia’s new Castback TC with an extra thick EVA foam sole. Foam is great at absorbing energy, but it’s not great at support. To improve support and balance, the Castback uses a molded foot bed and cupped heel bed to secure the foot. The responsive foam is assisted by small domes on the bottom of the shoe that increase flexibility and shock absorption.
To improve traction, the sole is reinforced with a layer of scalloped and sipped rubber designed to displace water and stick to wet surfaces. Each summer, my boat shoes die a slow death bleached by salt and sun and stained with fish blood. The Castback TC’s stain resistant upper ensures these shoes will last several seasons. My favorite feature, the back of the shoe is designed to fold down turning the sneakers into a pair of slip-ons.
- DWR water repellent
- Recycled upper
- Women-specific design
- 30 percent lighter than similar shoes
- Breathable mesh
- Not available in lace-ups
- Limited color choices
For generations, Alaskan watermen have worn XtraTuf boots to battle the elements. Today, XtraTuf takes their heavy-duty design and materials to lightweight boat shoes. Now, they’re adding ecologically responsible materials to completely modernize the XtraTuf line. The new Sharkbyte 2.0 Eco boat shoes combine XtraTuf’s latest tech and trendy looks for a performance boat shoe that looks cool on land, too.
The slip-on shoes are convenient for wearing around the house or a full day of hard fishing. The Biolite EVA outsole is environmentally friendly and 30-percent lighter than other Sharkbyte models. The upper is made of Repreve Our Ocean material recycled from ocean-bound plastic bottles. To reduce pollution and increase performance, the latest generation of eco-friendly materials hold their own with traditional performance fabrics. The Sharkbyte 2.0 look like a sports shoe with the traction and durability famous at XtraTuf.
- Perforated footbed
- Inexpensive
- Rigid heel for extra support
- Draw-string laces
- Soles not non-marking
When a new feature trickles down to products with a lower price tag, I know the trend has really gained traction. That’s the case with the Magellan Outdoors Tidewater boat shoe. The same knit upper and EVA sole found on high-end boat shoes are now available at a more affordable price. I fell in love with the knit upper shoe a couple years ago. The soft, one-piece textile is smooth against the skin and fits snugly for added support. But the material isn’t stain resistant, so my expensive knit shoes were quickly ruined.
This summer, I picked up a pair of Magellan Outdoors Tidewater shoes for the dirty work. They are nearly as comfortable as the expensive model and just as durable. The Tidewater shoe is the lightest in my review while still maintaining support and shock absorption. To drain the shoe, the sole has large ports. I can wear the Tidewater on the kayak or the boat. Since the shoe drains water and dries quickly, I also wear the Tidewater when I’m scrubbing the boat after a long day of fishing. Best of all, the Tidewater boat shoe costs less than half the price of similar boat shoes, so I can wear comfortable knit shoes wherever I’m fishing.

- Close-spaced tread captures dirt
From fall through spring, I live in my low-profile deck boots. The short collar offers greater range of movement than tall boots and the full-rubber lower keeps my feet dry. I’m not alone, pro guides and tournament anglers who live with wet feet are wearing ankle boots year round. Foot funk is the biggest problem when wearing rubber boots in the summer. To set themselves ahead of the competition, AFTCO’s deck boots have a breathable, quick-drying insole that keeps the inside dry. In the competitive deck boot race, AFTCOs Ankle Deck Boots won the Best Footwear category at the 2023 ICAST fishing tackle trade show.
After each trip, I remove the insole to dry and air out the boots. The outside of the boot is reinforced at the heel and toe for extra protection and the molded, antimicrobial footbed provides solid support for hard fishing. My favorite feature is the reinforced, welded, extra large finger loops to pull on the boots and the thick, molded heel kick to easily remove the boots. The tight-packed hexagonal tread pattern is super sticky on a slick deck, but a little difficult to kick off dirt and grit when I get on the boat.
- Removable insole
- Neoprene ankle padding
- Neoprene liner
- Thermal support
- Lower collar
- 100-percent natural rubber upper
- Only available in one color
Just another deck boot isn’t just another deck boot when it comes from Gill. The quality of Gill’s outerwear and footwear continues with their short deck boot. With a shorter collar than other ankle boots, the Gill Hydro Short Boot provides even more mobility while keeping my feet warm and dry. The 100-percent natural rubber upper is soft and supportive to move with my feet.
I like the large neoprene ankle pads that reduce friction and increase flexibility. The Hydro Short Boot is my choice for winter footwear. The neoprenes liner provides a layer of insulation and support. At the end of the day, I pull out the removable insoles to air out the boots.
- Waterproof neoprene booty
- Certified slip-resistant sole
- Compression molded midsole
- Double pull loops
- Reinforced toe cap
- Molded heel cup
- No removable insole
Last summer I wore a pair of Under Armour Micro G boat shoes on almost every fishing trip. From pounding through waves to perching on the bow looking for cobia, the versatile water sneakers offered comfort and support in a lightweight and durable package. This spring, when the water and air temperature are below 70 degrees, I’ll wear the Under Armour Shoreman Deck ankle boot to keep my feet warm and dry without adding weight or restricting movement.
The lightweight Shoreman Deck Boots are formed out of multi-layered polyurethane uppers, a neoprene liner, and ankle pad to improve comfort and increase warmth. I can even wear them without socks. The Shoreman uses a compression molded and charged midsole for springy comfort and performance. The EVA sole absorbs shock while the responsive material flexes and bends with each step.
The sole features an increased surface area and three types of tread for improved traction and ground feel. The cupped heel keeps these slide-on boots from slipping off. My favorite feature is the large pull loops in the front and back of the collar. Sometimes it takes two hands to pull on deck boots. The Shoremans will be available later this year, 2024.
- Lugged outsole
- Removable orthopedic sock liner
- Integrated boot band
- 100 percent waterproof
- Reinforced wear points
- Poured polyurethane midsole
Each winter, I pull on my big boy pants and tall boots for bluefin tuna season on the Outer Banks. Cold temperatures, high winds, rough seas, and giant 800 pound fish call for serious anglers and serious gear. Don’t show up without 130-class rods, 300 pound test monofilament, and the best outerwear available. This year, my bluefin kit will include Grundens’ Crewman Tall Boot.
The angry ocean off the fabled Outer Banks requires a full-size boot. When the boat is backing down on a big bluefin and the deck is awash in sea water, I need a high boot to keep my feet dry. Grunden further keeps water out with an integrated boot band that seals the legs of my Grunden bibs to the top of the boot. The outside of the boot is waterproof rubber with reinforced patches at critical wear points. Inside, the boot has a removable orthopedic sockliner that helps the boot dry and provides padding and support.
The poured polyurethane midsole further cushions and supports with excellent vibration reduction for all day comfort. The crowning jewel is under the shoe. The lugged outsole is designed by Michelin with proprietary rubber compounds for optimal grip and durability. When I walk onto the boat on a wet, cold, and windy February morning, the reliable performance and comfort of Grunden’s Creman Tall Boot keeps me confident I’ll be ready for battle with the biggest tuna in the world.
Key Features
- Slip-resistant sole
- Neoprene and rubber upper
- Reinforced pull straps
- Breathable mesh liner
- Micro channel traction
- EVA Footbed
- Not available in half sizes
A lightweight deck boot balances waterproof protection with breathable comfort. To keep feet dry, the Rogue Wave’s rubber outer is reinforced in high-wear areas, but flexible where the boot needs to move. On the inside, a mesh liner allows moisture and heat to leave the boot so feet stay dry from the inside, too. Standing all day on a boat deck is tough on my feet. The Rouge Wave uses an eight-millimeter thick EVA foam molded foot bed for cushioning and support. Boat shoe soles come in many patterns; I like a micro channeled sole to maintain optimal traction on a wet, slimy boat deck. The razor-thin perforations in the sole displaces water while maintaining maximum contact with a slippery surface.
- TPU reinforced in high-wear areas
- Quick lace with drawstring
- Easy on and off
- Barefoot compatible
- Slip resistant siped sole
- Looks funny at the grocery store
When I’m kayak fishing, I spend as much time with my feet in the water as in the kayak. I need a boat shoe that is as good at sticking to slimy rocks as holding onto a slippery boat deck. Simms new Pursuit wet shoe is a hybrid boat shoe and wet-wading boot. The mesh upper and drain ports move water through the shoe so when I lift my feet into the kayak, the water drains out without puddling inside the shoe.
To improve balance while I’m standing in the kayak, I like a shoe with a thin sole that puts me in contact with the deck. The Pursuit shoes are narrow to fit inside the kayak cockpit with reinforced TPU rubber patches to protect my feet from sharp rocks and shells. The neoprene and mesh upper and molded insole are focused on barefoot comfort. The tread pattern is widely spaced to release mud and dirt before I get into the boat while the razor sipped to maintain traction on wet surfaces.
- Super sticky rubber
- Hidden laces
- Wide toe box
- Level footbed
- Soft midsole and outsole for ground feel
A few years ago, I quit wearing wading boots with my waders. When I’m surf fishing or kayak fishing, I prefer a paddling bootie for low-profile and lightweight wading footwear. Unlike heavy wading boots, the booties are light and low profile. They don’t offer as much protection as wading boots, but for sand, mud, and the occasional oyster shell or barnacle, wading boots offer enough protection.
Astral Hiyaks are my pick for wader boots because I can just as easily wear them without waders. Astral worked overtime to develop a shoe with extraordinary ground feel. The thin, pliant sole grips rocks and connects with the boat deck to increase balance and stability. The soft sole also conforms with the ground surface to improve contact and traction. Whether I’m wearing waders or wet wading, I can use the Astral Hiyak for all four seasons.
How to Choose the Best Boat Shoes
Shoe, Boot, or Bootie?
The first decision when choosing the best boat shoes is matching the shoe to the fishing conditions. In the heat of summer, a pair of light, breathable, cushy water sneakers are cool and comfortable with enough protection to keep feet safe. If you spend time wading or kayak fishing, a hybrid bootie with drain holes and mesh upper efficiently transitions from dry land to the water to the boat deck.
For cool weather and tough fishing conditions, a deck boot keeps feet warm and dry. In recent years, ankle boots have become popular for offering protection without increasing weight or reducing mobility. When the conditions get real ugly, nothing beats a pair of full-size, calf-high boots to prevent water from entering and heat escaping.
Water Management
For water shoes and booties, water should exit the shoe quickly without pooling or soaking into the material. Most importantly, to prevent foot fungus, the shoe should dry quickly and completely between fishing trips. I like a shoe with a removable insole to further hasten drying and reduce the formation of stinky and itchy bacteria.
Shock Absorption
At my age, my back is worn out from years of rough seas. I look for a shoe with a cushy midsole that absorbs the thousand shocks passing through my feet on a typical day fishing. The difference between the right and wrong boat shoe is evident at the end of the day. Happy feet are the foundation of a happy angler.
Slip Resistance
Whether I’m perched on the tuna tower of a sportfishing boat or pulling my kayak over slippery rocks and sharp oyster shells, slip resistant soles that push water out and increase surface area keep my feet planted.
Of course price is an important consideration. High performance boat shoes aren’t cheap. Weather resistant, waterproof, slip resistant, shock absorption, antibacterial, and stabilization are a lot of features to pack into a pair of shoes. The good news is high-tech designs and materials are trickling down to lower-priced boat shoes. Now you can get a comfortable and capable pair of boat shoes at a reasonable price. But if you’re serious about hard core fishing, no price is too great for safe and happy feet.
Boat shoes are more than an old pair of sneakers or a funky pair of flip-flops. To understand what shoes are best to wear on a boat, look at the requirements for safety and comfort. Boat shoes have super-sticky soles with traction and channels to move water from underneath the shoe, so more rubber connects with the deck. Since the boat is always rolling and rocking, shock absorption is another important quality. Soft rubber and spongy foam insole and outsole reduce vibration to protect the angler. Finally, boat shoes have to manage moisture. In cold, wet conditions, a pair of rubber boots are the only thing that will keep feet dry. When the weather is warm, I wear boat shoes with breathable, water-repellent uppers and a sole with drain holes. Not only does this keep my feet dry on the water, but it allows the shoes to dry faster between trips. Dry shoes are more comfortable, and they reduce the chance of spawning stinky foot fungus.
After a long day on the water in the wrong shoes, my back is screaming, my legs ache, and my feet stink. Without a doubt, the best boat shoes are worth it. My small boat is always rocking and rolling. I can’t count the times boat shoes saved my feet from sharp objects and blunt force trauma. Boat shoes are necessary to protect my feet from damage. The right boat shoes reduce shock so that I can fish without pain. Taking a couple waves over the side and landing a few fish turns my boat deck into a slimy skating rink. I won’t go fishing without grippy boat shoes to keep my feet on the ground.
The boat shoes in this review range from $30 to $180. The best boat shoes use premium materials and the most advanced construction for a shoe that dries quickly, provides reliable traction and responsive cushioning.
Final Thoughts
The best boat shoes are worth their weight in gold. Not only do boat shoes make fishing more comfortable, it makes the sport more safe. In the past, the best way to have dry and funk-free feet was a pair of flip flops, but they don’t offer protection or support. And don’t get me started on the infamously funky white boots. Today’s best boat shoes use the latest technology and most advanced materials to improve comfort and safety. In the winter I wear high-top boots. In the shoulder seasons, I’m in ankle boots. And in the summer, my feet are cool and dry in the best boat shoes. But you’ll never again catch me in a pair of flip flops.

The Best Sailing Shoes For The 2024 Season
The best sailing shoes are both waterproof and slip-resistant. Outdoor boots are popular, but specialty sailing shoes are available.
Traditional sailing shoes are typically made of suede or similar material and feature a low-profile design and relatively flat soles. Modern sailing shoes are designed for offshore use and made of waterproof synthetic material.
Table of contents
Types of Sailing Shoes
Sailing shoes come in two primary types. These are stylish traditional sailing shoes (which are made of natural materials) and modern waterproof offshore sailing shoes. Both are practical and useful aboard sailboats.
Traditional Sailing Shoes
Traditional sailing shoes have been around for almost a century. These shoes, also known as "yacht shoes," are made from suede leather and are soft and flexible. They're not usually waterproof, but they can be made more water-resistant using chemical treatments.
Traditional sailing shoes are primarily used as a style statement, but they can be quite practical for some sailors. After all, they were designed to be used on boats. They utilize a flat sole that features a unique non-slip texture, which was designed to give sailors traction on a wet deck.
Modern Waterproof Sailing Shoes
Modern waterproof sailing shoes are made from synthetic materials and engineered for traction on wet surfaces. These shoes are preferred by offshore sailing crews who need to stay warm and dry in rough weather conditions.
Sailing Boots
Sailing boots are often used in conjunction with full-body foul weather gear. These boots resemble snow or rain boots, and they're made of a waterproof material such as rubber.
Sailing boots are often reserved for foul weather, as they're heavier and more clumsy than modern lightweight sailing shoes. That said, every offshore sailor should have a set of waterproof boots onboard.
Best Traditional Sailing Shoes
Traditional sailing shoes are practical, stylish, and still widely available. High-quality examples can last for years, and they're a staple of yacht clubs and sailing organizations across the country. Here are four of the best traditional sailboat shoes.
1. Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe
Sperry practically invented the 20th-century boat shoe, and they're still the go-to shoe company for sailors across the world. The Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe is an excellent introduction to traditional boat shoes.
Sperry's traditional Leeward shoe is a tan leather slip-on deck shoe made of a water-resistant hide. It features a rubber sole, which incorporates the Sperry anti-slip design that's popular across the line.
The design of the shoe is simple, and it's stitched together using thick and sturdy thread for long service life. Its water-resistant treatment makes it easy to clean and quick to dry should it become waterlogged.
This traditional marine shoe is both comfortable and stylish, making it ideal for regattas and dockside events. Despite its looks, the Sperry Leeward shoe is also practical. The Sperry Top-Deck line is popular with sailors and boat owners, as it stands up well to spray and slippery conditions.
2. L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs
L.L. Bean is another household name in traditional boat shoes. While not as ubiquitous as Sperry, L.L. Bean shoes are an excellent choice for traditional sailing footwear.
L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs are made in the traditional boat shoe style. They're slip-on by design and feature a low-profile sole with a very slight heel. L.L. Bean uses a different sole design philosophy, opting for a non-textured material.
Counterintuitively, the L.L. Bean flat non-textured sole actually has excellent anti-slip characteristics. It's made of sturdy leather that resists sliding on wet decks, and it features slight outsole siphons to increase grip on wet surfaces.
The L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat shoe is constructed with durable yet flexible leather that is comfortable and easy to clean. It features a leather liner inside, which works well with short socks and wears evenly over time.
That said, the leather liner is designed to work with or without socks. This is a plus, as it makes taking the shoe on and off easy after a day on the beach or walking around the deck barefoot.
These shoes feature a lace-up top with leather laces. They can be tied and left in place, as this is a slip-on shoe. The L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe can be worn with or without socks, just like the Sperry mentioned above.
3. J. Crew Classic Leather Boat Shoes
J. Crew produces an affordable and classic-looking set of boat shoes that are ideal for a first set. These shoes are made of suede-like leather, and they feature a non-slip rubber sole with a traditional profile.
J. Crew Classic Leather sailing shoes follow the stylistic trends of early boat shoes, yet they incorporate some modern materials that make them more practical for use on a sailboat. These include a non-marking rubber sole that's specifically designed to improve traction on wet and dry surfaces.
These J. Crew boat shoes feature leather laces in a way similar to the L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe. Like the L.L. Bean variants, these shoes can be worn with or without socks.
The leather is treated for easy cleaning, and they're hand-stitched for strength and longevity. The laces come through the sides of the shoe through grommets, which helps prevent the leather from wearing or breaking around the entry and exit points.
These classic boat shoes are a perfect first pair, and they're affordable enough to wear frequently. They also function as sailboat shoes, which is a plus as many new "boat shoes" are designed for looks only.
4. Sperry Gold Cup Original Boat Shoe
Sperry Gold Cup boat shoes are a classic and premium boat shoe. It features the standard Sperry anti-slip sole and durable leather construction for long life and easy cleaning.
Like most standard Sperry shoes, the Gold Cup Original series is designed to be used on a sailboat or yacht. The shoe's design is based on the original Sperry, which was worn by sailors and yacht owners for decades.
Sperry shoe soles are lightly scored and made with a coarse rubber material that resists slip on wet decks. They're excellent for teak and fiberglass decks and add a layer of security to existing non-slip surfaces.
The shoes themselves follow the classic Sperry design philosophy. They're made from a non-suede leather that's water-resistant and dries out quickly, and they feature leather laces fed through 18k gold plated eyelets.
These shoes feature durable stitching that's used to extend their service life. Inside the shoe, a lambskin lining makes it comfortable to wear with or without socks. The Sperry Gold Cup shoe is a high-quality sailing shoe that's ideal for warm conditions.
Best Modern Sailing Shoes
Although modern sailing shoes lack the aesthetic appeal of traditional sailing shoes, they offer the added convenience of modern design and the functionality of synthetic materials. Here are four of the best modern shoes for sailing.
1. Atlantic Heritage Comfort Boat Shoe
The Atlantic Heritage Comfort Boat Shoe combines traditional styling with modern functionality. It features a suede and stitched appearance and the design of a modern running shoe, and it offers superior support and anti-slip characteristics.
The primary drawback of flat-soled shoes is that they can be uncomfortable, especially if you have foot, back, or knee problems. The Atlantic Heritage shoe eliminates these issues, as it offers the support of a modern shoe.
The primary selling point of the Atlantic Heritage shoe is comfort. It's designed specifically to offer all-day comfort when standing on the deck or walking alongshore. They work just as well on sand and gravel, and they offer elevation in all the right places.
The Atlantic Heritage shoe features a proprietary anti-slip sole, which is designed to provide traction without leaving marks. They stand up to water well, despite the fact that they're not technically waterproof.
2. DLGJPA Lightweight Aqua Water Shoes
The DLGJPA Lightweight Aqua Water shoe series is a radical departure from what most people would consider a traditional boat shoe. These woven shoes are designed for grip and use in wet conditions.
The Aqua Water shoe series takes a different approach to water resistance. Instead of keeping water out, they're designed to let it flow around and inside of the shoe. The woven body of the shoe dries almost as quickly as it gets wet.
The Aqua Water shoe is a warm-weather shoe designed for wet tropical environments and water sports. They're especially useful for launching boats if you need to get in the water to guide the vessel.
The bottom of the Aqua Water shoe is perforated for quick draining. These shoes are highly breathable and ultralight, making them a comfortable and non-slip option for warm weather sailing.
3. Riomar Deck Driver Stingray Boat Shoe
Are you looking for traditional styling with a modern non-slip grip? The Riomar Deck Driver Stingray is the perfect combination of style and modern materials for use in wet and dry sailing conditions .
A unique feature of the Riomar Deck Driver is the sole. It features a series of protruding rubber buttons that conform to the shape of the ground for optimal grip.
These shoes are non-marking, which is especially important for boats with polished white fiberglass deck spaces. The shoes are flexible and comfortable and designed to be worn with or without socks.
Riomar is a well-known producer of marine shoes, and the Deck Driver Stingray is the culmination of years of experience making high-quality sailboat shoes. These shoes are ideal if you're looking for an attractive and practical modern sailing shoe.
4. Swims Waterproof Penny Loafer
Here's a unique and modern machine-washable sailing shoe designed for comfort and good looks. The Swims Penny Loafer is a well-executed take on an old design and an excellent choice for warm-weather sailing.
The Swims Penny Loafer is completely waterproof and designed for use in wet conditions. It's washable and contains antimicrobial materials to stay sanitary even in the worst conditions.
The shoe features a proven traction sole design with scoring and anti-slip compounds. It's ideal for walking around fiberglass or wooden deck and maintains traction when the deck is wet.
These shoes are designed to look like penny loafers, which means they're both stylish and comfortable. They can be worn with or without socks, but they're designed primarily for sockless use.
Swims Waterproof Penny Loafer sailboat shoes are currently available in light blue, gray, brown, black, and dark blue. Two-tone gray and neon green are available, and the rest of the colors feature a close-to-matching sole.
Best Sailboat Boots for Rough Weather
Warm weather and calm conditions aren't the only things that sailors encounter. Thus, it's a good idea to have a set of waterproof sailing boots to accompany your foul weather gear. Here are the three best sailboat boots for less-than-ideal sailing conditions.
1. Xtratuf 6 in Ankle Deck Boots
These modern deck boots are the perfect way to prepare for rough weather onboard a sailboat. They're comfortable and waterproof and slip on easily without any laces.
The lack of laces on these boots is more than just convenience. Laces pose a hazard on a sailboat, as it's easy to get them snagged on a cleat or trip while walking around the deck. The Xtratuf 6 Ankle Deck Boots eliminate this hazard.
Aesthetically, these are attractive boots that go well with foul-weather gear. They're not noticeably larger than standard fishing boots. In fact, they're lower-profile than most foul weather boots. That makes them an excellent choice for fair and inclement weather
These are low boots, as they only reach about halfway up the ankle. They're made of a waterproof rubber material that's comfortable, durable, and easy to clean. Xtratuf sailing boots also feature a flat non-slip sole for traction when moving about the deck.
2. Gill Short Cruising Boots
Here's a traditional sailboat boot that's designed for comfort, safety, and water resistance. These "short" boots are fairly tall and ideal for pairing with the waterproof pants from your foul weather gear.
Gill Short Cruising Boots are designed specifically for marine use, which makes them ideal for keeping aboard a sailboat. The soles feature a proprietary design that offers durability and superior anti-slip properties.
These boots resemble traditional fishing boots or barn muck boots, but they're designed for waterproof use on slippery surfaces such as the deck of a sailboat.
They're comfortable and easy to clean, and they're a highly affordable option if you don't already have a pair of foul weather waterproof sailing boots.
3. Rugged Shark Great White Deck Boots
Rugged Shark is a household name in sailboat boots, and they produce a line of premium deck boots for foul weather use. These full-size boots are perfect for all sailing weather conditions.
The Rugged Shark Great White deck boot is a serious heavy-duty deck boot. It's the "real deal," as they say, and this boot offers numerous advantages when the weather gets hazardous (or simply damp and uncomfortable).
These boots are roomy and waterproof, allowing sailors to wear warm insulated socks inside without fear of waterlogging. They work well with standard foul weather gear, and they're high enough to keep water out if the cockpit fills up.
These boots feature an anti-slip sole with corrugated scoring. This anti-slip surface is comparable to traditional deck shoes that date back almost a century. These are proven premium boots with the right combination of durability and flexibility.

Best waterproof boat shoes: 8 of the best options to keep your feet warm and dry

If you are going to be out on the water then you will need a pair of waterproof boat shoes, even if you intend to stay largely dry. We take a look at what's on the market...
Photo: Colin Work - Pixstel.com
We’re not suggesting for a moment that boating in the wet will result in trench foot, but anyone who’s been on the receiving end of a good soaking at sea will know just how unpleasant cold, soggy toes can be! So a good pair of waterproof boat shoes is essential.
In addition to personal discomfort, there’s also the not insignificant matter of staying safe on board – and if you can’t feel your toes, safety is likely to be compromised to some degree or another. Another reason why donning the appropriate waterproof boat shoes when casting off is so important.
But what to wear? While some marine footwear is designed to withstand pretty much anything – see the Musto Goretex Ocean Racer sailing boots below, for example – they come in at a hefty price and simply might not look the part on the deck of a motor cruiser.
Progressing along the spectrum come deck shoes , neoprene bootees and trainer-based footwear. All play a part and all are capable of fulfilling a defined set of needs, but ultimately, as always, the choice of what to buy is yours.
Our footwear buyers’ guide is certainly not exhaustive – there are literally hundreds of makes and a multitude of types of shoes and boots to choose from. Rather, this list seeks to provide an overview of the type of footwear you might consider purchasing for your boat.
In our view, it’s worth keeping a pair or two on board which can be slipped on whenever you step aboard as that will help protect your boat from any grime and small stones picked up by the soles of your day shoes.
As with any other type of footwear, fit, comfort, grip, quality and price are all factors to take into consideration when buying a pair of shoes for boating.

The outer material is entirely synthetic, so should both perform well and last at sea. Three colours – Navy, Graphite Blue and Off White – are available and a full range of sizes from UK 3.5 to 8 (including half sizes) are offered.
Reasons to buy: High-performance reliable brand, breathable and flexible, full size range

Quayside Clipper unisex adult’s boat shoes
A marine classic if ever there was one, the Quayside Clipper has all the features boaters and sailors have come to expect in a deck shoe or waterproof boat shoes.
The moccasin-style navy and chestnut brown breathable leather upper has been hand-stitched and looks solid and sturdy. The 360-degree laces are made of leather too, and there’s a flat-heel on the non-marking rubber sole. While the inner material itself is unlined, a padded insole is provided to keep feet comfortable.
Quayside’s website bills these as adult shoes, but we noticed the size options go all the way down to UK 3.5, meaning there’s plenty of kids out there who could also benefit from a pair of these smart boat shoes.
Reasons to buy: Classic, padded insole, great size range
Reasons to avoid : Inner material is unlined, boots offer more foot coverage
Price: £59.95

Tribord adult’s sailing boots
Tribord is sports and leisure goods retailer Decathlon’s in-house sailing sports brand. The company has a history of developing its own products and reports these boots have been created by its designers and fellow sailors.
Made of genuine rubber, functionality was clearly at the top of their list. Where they score especially highly is when it comes to keeping feet dry and warm – obviously important on the high seas. The soles, which are also made of rubber, are non-marking and non-slip.
The boots are also extremely flexible, adding to the comfort when wearing them for extended periods. An inner sock provides additional insulation and the entire product is salt water resistant.
Reasons to buy: Genuine rubber, great functionality with non-slip soles
Reasons to avoid : Other options provide better ankle support
Price: £39.99

Musto Goretex Ocean Racer sailing boots
Weighing in at the heavyweight end of the boating footwear spectrum, these boots are made for sailing in the kind of conditions that confine most of us to quarters.
Just about every protection system known to man has been incorporated; a waterproof GORE-TEX membrane, Grip Deck sticky rubber soles, Grip Flex multi-directional outsole grip, EVA midsole, footbed and ankle protectors, this boot has it all – and more.
There’s even a removable gaiter to provide an additional layer of protection from water ingress and inside the boot has a unique DynamicFit bellowed tongue and bungee-style lacing to hold the foot safely and securely in place. They’re not cheap, but this kind of specification is always going to come at a price.
Reasons to buy: Incredible protection, GORE-TEX membrane, removable gaiter
Reasons to avoid : Premium price, heavy
Price: £269.90

Wuzzos Corinthian Pro
As a high-end product, the Wuzzos Corinthian Pro raises the bar for the ubiquitous deck shoe. The attractive leather and mesh uppers have been designed not only to look good but also to provide high levels of ventilation and drainage.
The metal lace hole eyelets are salt water resistant, and water-dispersing, anti-aquaplaning soles help the wearer keep their feet come what may. An extra safety feature are the shoes’ forward-facing ‘Wave-Shock’ panels. Built into the white outsole, these limit torsional twist and absorb impact to help prevent injuries to ankles, knees and other joints.
Wuzzos Corinthian Pro shoes are available in a choice of three colours; navy, brown and grey.
Reasons to buy: Salt water resistant eyelets, attractive leather, ‘Wave-Shock’ panels
Reasons to avoid : Premium price, boots offer more foot coverage
Price: £120.00 inc VAT

Gill Race Trainer
Smart and functional, this shoe is a quality product from one of the marine industry’s most respected names. Available in adult’s sizes from EU 41 – 46 (UK 7 – 12), the Race Trainer is attractively styled in navy with royal blue laces and orange detailing on the lace holes.
The shoe has been designed to be non-marking, non-slip, quick draining, and incorporates moulded toe protection and a padded tongue. An EVA insert gives extra impact protection at the heel, and the lightweight, cushioned midsole is anti-microbial treated to reduce odour.
An additional noteworthy feature is that an air-cell has been incorporated into the insole to provide an impact-absorbing base for this tough and practical shoe.
Reasons to buy: Respectable brand, non-marking and non-slip, an EVA insert for extra protection
Reasons to avoid : Could be more size options
Price: £79.95

Lands’ End men’s water trainers
“Hooray for holey soles,” trumpets Lands’ End’s website and we have to agree it’s a pretty clever idea. For these trainers have been designed to get wet, and when they do, the drain holes built into the soles are there to help disperse it as quickly as possible.
There’s lot of other features to commend these reasonably-priced shoes as well. Take, for example, the polyester mesh upper, bungee style lacing, removable foam-cushion insole, and pull tabs on both the heels and tongues. The cotton/polyester lining has been anti-microbial treated and the shoe’s thick rubber soles provide protection and absorb the shocks.
Reasons to buy: Affordable, mesh upper, comfortable
Reasons to avoid : Heavy water flow might not be advised
Price: £33.60

The shoes are held in place by way of an elasticated ankle band with an adjustable toggle at the heel. Water-draining mesh panels are incorporated into the top surface, and underneath there’s a durable, anti-slip outer sole.
The neoprene uppers dry quickly once back on land and the insoles can be removed and simply wrung out.

COMPARISON TABLE – THE BEST SAILING SHOES
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SAILING SHOES
Type of sailing.
Equipment and clothing that you require for sailing very much depend on what type of sailing you’ll be doing. Whether it’s dinghy racing or classic cruising, your footwear needs to be right.
DINGHY SAILING
Dinghy sailing is probably the wettest kind of sailing (unless you’re into extreme performance yachts!) and so your dinghy sailing shoes need to cope. Dinghy sailing also involves shifting your body and weight quickly so clumpy shoes just aren’t going to cut it.
To keep your feet warm and easy to move in wet conditions, most dinghy sailors wear wetsuit booties. Made from neoprene , these types of boots come in different thicknesses depending on what temperatures you’ll be sailing in. Some dinghy sailing booties also have reinforced top sections so they don’t wear out when you’re feet are under the straps.
Cruising tends to be a much more laid back affair than dinghy sailing and shoe choice is much larger. From deck shoes to sailing wellies, your footwear choice will depend on your boat, the conditions and whether you need to go on deck or not.
The main consideration for cruising sailors is a non-marking sole. Black rubber marks are a big no-no on any boat! Cruising shoes should be reasonable waterproof in case waves come over, but also grippy, comfortable and easy to clean.
While many cruising yachts can also race, the act of racing is a more extreme form of sailing. What does that mean? It means that you’ll probably have a lot more water washing along the decks and into the cockpit.
Yachts may also be more heeled over when racing than other types of sailing so it’s easier to slip. If you want to do some racing or will be sailing a racing yacht, grippy soles are a must. Sailing shoes should also be waterproof and with a low-profile so you can move quickly should you need to.
LOCATION AND WEATHER
Will you be sailing on a lake? At sea? In big waves? In flat water? Will it be cold? Hot? Tropical? No one wants cold feet right?
If you’re sailing in a cold water area, you should plan your shoes for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Why? Because when the wind crosses water, it will often cool to the temperature of the water. Even on a hot, sunny day, sailing can get chilly if the water is cool.
In cold weather, numb toes can be a real problem. If you’re planning on cold water sailing then remember to leave room in sailing shoes for warm, thick socks.
On the flip side, if you’ll be sailing in warm seas and hot sun, you’ll need breathable sailing shoes that won’t leave your feet sweaty. Shows made from leather, mesh or GORE-TEX are usually very breathable.
Sailing shoes come in all sorts of materials, mainly suited to conditions and environment. Dinghy sailing shoes need to allow you to swim in them should you capsize, hence being made out of neoprene. The thicker the neoprene, the warmer they’ll keep your feet.
Other sailing shoes can be made out of rubber or plastic. These materials are waterproof, making them good for cold water sailing. Rubber isn’t breathable though, so for warmer weather, leather or breathable synthetics are a good choice.
Non-marking soles are crucial for any type of boat. A passenger or crew member with a marking sole is liable to be made to walk the plank. Luckily, it’s hard to find marking soles in the sailing shoe industry. All the sailing shoes featured in our reviews have non-marking soles.
Grippy soles are important as decks and cockpits can get very slippery. However, deep tread isn’t necessarily good and can pick up stones and gravel ashore which then scratch the gelcoat and wood on a boat.
Neoprene booties usually have reinforced soles for longevity and extra comfort when walking up dinghy ramps. Cheaper booties might lack this feature and could wear out much faster but are great for beginners .
Uncomfortable shoes are terrible so it seems like a no-brainer to buy comfortable sailing shoes. But there’s often more to it than ordinary shoes.
For instance, will you always be wearing socks? Sometimes, you might need to get out on deck quickly when you have to reef a sail . You may not have time to put socks on, so can you still wear and walk in your shoes without them?
Do you find shoes often rub? If so, finding shoes with a softer opening might be a good idea. Blisters can get infected in saltwater environments, especially if you’re sailing in the sub-tropics and tropics.

Best Boat Shoes for Women Over 50 That Are Affordable, Stylish and Comfortable: 7 Cushioned Options
These picks will support feet and keep them happy all day long
Share this:
While sunny weather and days spent on the boat may not be all year round for most of us, boat shoes can be (well, maybe not for the snow, but you get the gist). The preppy-chic style works just as well in summer as a closed-toe option for the days you want to ditch the sandals as it does in the fall for a comfy slip-on pick. Boat shoes essentially are the more casual sister shoe to loafers, and are typically more lightweight and easy for everyday wear. That’s why we rounded up the best boat shoes for women over 50 that are not only stylish, but keep comfort top of mind with features like arch support, cushioning and more.
What to look for in boat shoes for women over 50
As we age, our feet develop certain needs we need to fulfill to keep them happy — especially as women. Women especially deal with foot aches and pains from plantar fasciitis to bunions and corns and more. That’s why it’s so important for us to take care of our feet by choosing the right shoes. Keep reading for a few things to look for in boat shoes for women over 50.
Boat shoes with arch support
As mentioned, plantar fasciitis is a very common foot issue many women deal with, and it can be extremely painful, especially if you’re not wearing supportive shoes. Shoes with arch support can help give your foot back that natural arch it’s lacking, whether from plantar fasciitis or just your foot’s arch naturally “flattening” with age.
Boat shoes with cushioning
Next, consider options that have adequate cushioning. Not having proper, supportive cushioning can leave feet sore and painful, and also probably won’t last you as long. Shoes that seem very “thin” probably do not have enough cushioning for your feet, so best to stay away from these styles.
Boat shoes with security
Since boat shoes are slip-on style, you’ll want to make sure they aren’t too “loose” where your heel will slip out while walking. On the contrary, you’ll also want to make sure they aren’t too small or tight where they’ll leave you with painful blisters, since boat shoes are closed-toed and have a heel backing. Read reviews before buying a pair to see if they run true-to-size or if you need to size up or down.
The 7 best boat shoes for women over 50
Keep reading for the best boat shoes for women over 50 that are supportive, comfortable and chic.
Columbia Boatside Breathe PFG
The first thing that caught our eye about Columbia Boatside Breath PFG boat shoes was the breathable mesh fabric. This is great for those beginning weeks of fall where it’s a little chillier but not quite cold, and your feet are likely to still get hot and sweaty. Plus, they feature special grip and traction technology, and foam cushioning.
Sperry Starfish Boat Shoes
If you’re familiar with boat shoes at all, you’re probably familiar with Sperry, the brand many consider to be the “OG” or poster shoe for boat shoes. So of course, we had to add Sperry Starfish Boat Shoes to this list! We love how this neutral color makes it easy to pair with anything, and even more, we love that they have a foam midsole for shock absorption.
Skechers On-the-Go Flex
Skechers are widely-recommended by the thousands of podiatrists for their comfort and supportive technology at an affordable cost — and their stylish options! Skechers On-the-Go Flex boat shoes are no exception, and come in this gorgeous navy shade as well as a bright, summery coral. It has an air-cooled insole and comfy cushioning that will keep feet happy all day long.
Croft & Barrow Boat Shoes
If you’re looking for shoes similar to Sperry but want to save a little money, turn to Croft and Barrow Boat Shoes . They look nearly identical to Sperry’s classic boat shoe, but cost less than $50.
Sperry Lug Boat Shoe
Style-wise, Sperry Lug Boat Shoes may just be a winner. They are oh-so-fabulous and look luxurious, but still have the practicality and comfort of a traditional boat shoe. Its chunky platform heel also offers a bit of height sans the pain. To make them even cuter, this pair has just the slightest touch of pastel pink around the heel (but black, burgundy and navy options are available too if you’re not a fan of the brown and pink combo).
Eastland Marcella Loafer
Deal of the Day
While they are technically loafers, Eastland Marcella Loafer looks very similar to what’s considered boat shoes, and are just as comfortable. These boat shoes are right on trend with the metallic color option, as metallics are all the rage right now. Even better, they have a memory foam footbed.
Bed Stu Overboard Boat Shoes
We love how these boat shoes — Bed Stu Overboard Boat Shoes — are neutral enough to wear with just about any outfit, but are also still very fashion-forward with its unique touch of a dainty chain along the side of the shoe. The detail is subtle, but can make all the difference when trying to elevate your outfit.
