Yächtley Crëw rides like the wind to make you free again at local show

Portrait of Scott Tady

It's almost like Gerry Rafferty, Rupert Holmes, Robbie Dupree, Billy Ocean and England Dan & John Ford Coley are all coming to town −to play at the exact same concert −their most smash-hit song, and nothing else.

Throw in some Player, a little Ace and a helping of 10cc, and we're talking about a sure-to-be smooth-sailing show by Yächtley Crëw.

Billing themselves as the "Titans of Soft Rock," Yächtley Crëw will get spectators loudly singing along with “Brandy (You're a Fine Girl") and “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," plus kindred spirits songs by multiple-hit artists as lofty as Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Toto, Steely Dan and Hall & Oates.

Yächtley Crëw's upcoming shows are April 28, Ardmore Music Hall, Ardmore, Pennsylvania; April 29, The Vine at Del Lago Resort, Waterloo, New York; April 30, Jergel's Rhythm Grill, Warrendale, Pennsylvania.; May 2, Sony Hall, New York City; May 4, Beacon Theatre; Hopewell, Virginia; May 5, Carteret Performing Arts Center, Carteret, New Jersey; and May 6, Tropicana Showroom, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The California band delivers a fun but earnest tribute to yacht rock, a genre that saw its popularity multiply during the pandemic, as sort-of comfort food for people who grew up with 1970s and early-1980s soft rock.

"It's nostalgia and some of the most brilliant songwriters and best songs out there," Yächtley Crëw vocalist Philly Ocean said. "They capture an era, but it's also an attitude and a feeling, that maybe more than ever now, people need.

"I'm pleasantly surprised by how positively people have responded to what we're doing," he said. "I think that was amplified during the pandemic when live music had shut down. Seems now it's bigger than ever. We feel humbled in so many ways."

Yes, his six-man band wears matching stage uniforms of boat captain hats, sunglasses and blue blazers, but this isn't a Spinal Tap-ish spoof.

"We care about this music very much and bring energy and passion to this," Ocean said in an April 12 phone interview.

"Our goal is to make everyone who leaves the show think, 'Man, that's one of the best shows I've ever seen.' It's about how we perform these songs. Our goal is really to play these songs as true to the originals. People don't come to hear us do our own renditions. They're not looking for artistic interpretation. They want to hear us play versions as close to the originals they know. Because people want to sing along.

"I'm sure we've all seen a concert where an artist does an alt- version of their hit song, and you might think that's good, it's cool. But can you sing along to an alt-version?" Ocean said. "We play it like you remember it from some of the best musicians in history, bar none. And it's a show of hits. Every single song we play is a hit."

For those unfamiliar with the concept, '‘yacht rock'’ is a fairly recently coined term for the revival of the soft rock and top-shelf hits of the late '70s to the early '80s. The Yächtley Crëw website concedes much of it is overwrought story-driven narrative, but the music itself remains a treat.

"Some people call it Guilty Pleasure music," Ocean said. "We promise you'll know every song we play. You might not recognize the beginning of a few if you haven't heard them in 30 years, but once the chorus hits, you'll recognize it and be singing right along."

Insisting "We're not characters, we're personas," Ocean is joined on stage by Baba Buoy, bass guitar; Pauly Shores on sax, Tommy Buoy on guitar, Stoney Shores on keyboards, and Sailor Hawkins on drums. The drummer's name is an homage to the late-Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, who Yächtley Crëw now honors with a cover of "Hero."

Yächtley Crëw members are in the same age group, first exposed to this meticulously produced, male-dominated genre as kids.

Ocean recalls riding in his dad's Chevrolet Beretta.

"He'd have the classic-rock radio station on, playing Toto and Steely Dan and Hall & Oates," he said.

Those musical stalwarts became inspirations, as did yacht rock vocalists like Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins "who has a voice that's unparalleled," Ocean said.

Like any good genre, debates emerge as to who should or shouldn't qualify.

"We do 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' by Queen, which is not yacht rock band," Ocean said. "The basic definition is soft rock, but we take our freedoms with it as all bands do. Just like a heavy metal band will put out a ballad.

"You know, it's very subjective. I define (yacht rock) as a feeling," he said. "Just imagine you're on a yacht, and what music is playing as you're just floating on the ocean or taking a swim before Jeeves brings you a tray of caviar. There's a freedom when you listen to it. It's all about love and having a good time. Memories of life moments are very specific to these songs."

Some acts are bona fide yacht rock for only part of their existence.

"Early Hall & Oates, like 'When The Morning Comes,' isn't necessarily yacht rock, but 'You Make My Dreams Come True' is," Ocean said. "It's a moment in time; it's when a song came out, but it's also about how it was produced and the elements of that song. It even comes down to the songwriting. But I'm very open to what people want to say is yacht rock. Like Billy Joel in the early '80s − 'Just The Way You Are' is in our set.

Does yacht rock have its own "Stairway to Heaven" stature song?

Maybe "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty, Boz Scaggs' "Lido Shuffle," Christopher Cross' "Ride Like The Wind," or Kenny Loggins' "Heart to Heart," Ocean said.

"And then you can start getting into deep cuts like "Thunder Island," and "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". These are all songs from that genre."

More: Revisit the classic Genesis with Steve Hackett

Pivoting like many bands did during the pandemic, by performing drive-in theater concerts and connecting with fans via music videos, Yächtley Crëw is excited to get back in front of live audiences.

"Like we're playing Jergel's again, and could not be more excited. It's almost sold out, which is pretty amazing for a band from California only playing there for the second time," Ocean said. "And we're adding shows all the time, like Atlantic City.

"The whole point of the show is to have fun," he said. "And we love to meet everyone, so come say hi afterward."

'Man, they came to party': Yachtley Crew sails back to Indian Ranch with more yacht rock

W hen Yachtley Crew came to Indian Ranch by the shores of Indian Lake in Webster last summer, it was evidently a very popular voyage through the smooth waters of a yacht rock tribute show.

"We love Indian Ranch. Man, they came to party. They were amazing," recalled Phillip Daniel, also known as Yachtley Crew's Philly Ocean and lead vocalist, about how the the show went and the reaction of the audience.

Yachtley Crew will be setting sail again for an appearance at Indian Ranch on July 25. "If it's anything like last year, we're stoked," Daniel said.

'Sailing ... takes me away ....'

The seven-member band, which dresses in nautical suits with captain's hats and wears aviator sunglasses, is currently on its "Full Steam Ahead" nationwide tour, the biggest tour since it was founded in Los Angeles in 2017. Upcoming dates also include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset on July 26, Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence on July 27, and the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis on July 28.

The band is riding the yacht rock wave since a 2005 video series launched the term in 2005 in an affectionate send up of artists such as Christopher Cross and Hall and Oates. Cross, who was at Indian Ranch July 7 with Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame, had a big hit in 1979 with the soft rock song " Sailing " which is about getting away from everything on a sail boat and so helped form the archetype of Yacht Rock.

Yachtley Crew also call themselves "The Titans of Soft Rock."

Asked for a definition of yacht rock, Daniel said "it's one of those elusive things ... I think the most easy way to define it is the iconic soft rock hits from the late 70s and early 80s music." Except that, instead of soft rock, "yacht rock just sounds kind of more fun."

Yachtley Crew's first recording release "Seas the Day" (2023) includes its renditions of songs that have become regarded as yacht rock classics such as Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” and Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind.” Other songs in the band’s set include Toto’s “Africa,” Looking Glass’ “Brandy” and Rupert Holmes’ “ Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”

Indeed, "The Piña Colada song, that is a great yacht rock core song, like 'Ride Like the Wind,'" Daniel said.

Audiences often dress up for the shows in yacht-themed attire and love to sing-along. Other yacht rock tribute and fun party bands include Yacht Rock Revue who will be performing at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield on Aug. 4.

'It has to be smooth'

Elsewhere, there has been some rather pedantic debate in some quarters about what makes true yacht rock, with terms appearing such as "nyacht" rock. An article in Mental Floss magazine helps keep things straightforward by saying " But above all else, the sound has to be  smooth . "

Daniel's vocals are certainly smooth, and the depth of sound that Yachtley Crew brings to its music is enhanced by having a sax player.

Daniel has memories of listening to the soft music of the late 70s/early 80s era while riding around with his father in a car and singing along to the radio. Later, he was in several original bands in Los Angeles. Besides Daniel (Philly Ocean) Yachtley Crew is made up of drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).

"Each of us had careers with bands," Daniel said. The crew started to be assembled by Jones and Ruiz who are long-time friends and were listening to yacht rock music and felt they could do something with it. They put out a Craigslist ad and found guitarist Gardner. Daniel is friends with Gardner and also came aboard.

"Everything came together really organically," Daniel said.

'I think we have something here'

The idea of uniforms for the band came early. "Just the idea of yacht rock is such fun," Daniel said. But the group spent several months rehearsing to get the music down right. "We wanted to embody what people remember about these songs."

When the curtain was pulled on their first gigs Daniel recalls the shock on the faces of the audiences when they saw a band in nautical uniform. However, "They got it within two or three songs. They were screaming and dancing ... (I thought) Man, I think we have something here."

Yachtley Crew was soon selling out local venues and were noticed by the late legendary Jimmy Buffett who signed them to his own Mailboat Records label. The group have appeared on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio “Yacht Rock 311” show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the station.

Just as the band was about to get ready for its first nationwide tour in 2020, the pandemic struck. "We had a ton of shows booked," Daniel said. Yachtley Crew made music videos, put on live-streamed concerts and played at some drive-in concerts that were organized in the Los Angeles area. "People seemed to really respond.'

As the lockdown eased, "I think there was so much pent up demand for live music it really helped us. We got all the gigs back and places we'd never played before were selling out," Daniel said.

'Something original'

The "Seas the Day" recording also has Yachtley Crew's first original song, "Sex on the Beach," ostensibly about the drink that bears the name.

"We wanted to put something original out there," Daniel said. The challenge for the band was to come up with a song that sounds like it could have been written in the late '70s/early '80s soft rock era. "We wanted to capture the same vibe," he said. The video for "Sex on the Beach" has a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host Mario Lopez.

The song and video includes a list of names of drinks, a couple falling in love, and "innuendo," Daniel said. All the members of Yachtley Crew contributed to the song. Once they had the concept, "we had the song written in 30 minutes. Everyone brings something unique to it." Fans have started requesting the song at shows.

Yachtley Crew has "two albums in the works" and two more original songs "in the mix." With that, "The core will always be the iconic songs," Daniel said.

The band has been venturing out across the seven seas with appearances abroad, including the United Kingdom.

"Total world domination," Daniel joked when asked about his ultimate goal for Yachtley Crew. Or at least, "To play for a stadium full of people," he said.

"We want to play the music for as many people as we can all over the world. When people come to our shows they're creating memories they will have for the rest of their lives. That's what it's about."

Yachtley Crew are the seven-piece So Cal band who burst onto the club scene in 2017, selling out countless local venues before starting a nationwide Yacht Rock craze. The band set sail on their “Full Steam Ahead Tour” in February and continue on their nationwide tour throughout 2024 in support of their debut EP Seas The Day via Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records.

Seas the Day was produced and mixed by Grammy award winning Chris Lord-Alge (Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day) and features the band’s first original song “S*x on the Beach,” accompanied by a video with a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host, Mario Lopez. The video was directed by Myles Erfurth (Dead Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Twiztid). Yachtley Crew is managed by longtime industry icon Andy Gould (Rob Zombie, Pantera, Lionel Richie, Guns N’ Roses) and represented by Jim Lenz at TKO.

“Seas the Day is a love letter to the fans who have made this all possible, and a dream come true to be on the Mailboat Records roster, alongside their incredible artists.”

Adds Chris Lord-Alge: “Yachtley Crew brought new life to the songs we all know so well. The energy and enthusiasm in making the first EP was fantastic! There will be more to come and I have no doubt Yachtley Crew will be full steam ahead of its time conquering the globe!”

The band has also reunited with Chris Lord Alge for a follow up 6 song EP which they are currently in the studio recording.

The nautical-suited and captain’s-hat-clad Yachtley Crew (also known as “The Titans of Soft Rock”), includes lead vocalist Phillip Daniel (Philly Ocean), drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).

Yachtley Crew Will Ride Yacht Rock Wave to Robins Theatre

WARREN, Ohio – The “yacht rock” music genre has no formal definition.

But people know it when they hear it. And they love it.

The term encompasses the soft pop music that was all over the airwaves in the ’70s and ’80s. Think “Lido Shuffle,” “Brandy,” “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” and “Ride Like the Wind.”

They’re not heavyweight tunes, but for anyone who lived through the era – and many who didn’t – they evoke good times and carefree days.

The resurgence of yacht rock has become a national phenomenon.

Just ask Yachtley Crew, the California-based band that is riding the resurgent genre’s wave. Yachtley Crew will make its Mahoning Valley debut Thursday, Aug. 8, when it comes to the Robins Theatre.

Philly Ocean – his real name is Phillip Daniel – is the lead singer and frontman for Yachtley Crew. He said the genre needs no introduction.

“We’ve been doing this for seven years and we still get asked the question, ‘What is yacht rock?’” Ocean said.

His stock answer is, “You know what yacht rock is even if it’s the first time you’ve heard that term.”

By the way, the term originated with the YouTube comedy series “Yacht Rock,” which spoofed that music scene in a campy way.

The seven-piece Yachtley Crew band has been making ports of call all over the country for years. Clad in nautical Navy dress whites and captain hats, the act delivers a Jimmy Buffett-style party wherever it goes.

Yachtley Crew likes to get the crowd involved and having fun, but it also has respect for the music. Part of the appeal of the songs, Ocean said, is that they connect with almost everyone.

“The fans are passionate about it,” he said. “There is a core set of songs that they need and want to hear, and they’ll get mad if we don’t play them.”

Diehard fans of Yachtley Crew have been dubbed “crewpies” (rhymes with “groupies”) and they are ready to get into the spirit at concerts.

“Some of them wear captain’s hats,” Ocean said. “I’ve seen them dressed as Gilligan and The Skipper or wearing a life preserver.”

The members of the band are all seasoned musicians and performers who had careers before Yachtley Crew. They not only do justice to the songs but infuse them with new energy.

“These are not just three-chord pop songs,” Ocean explained. “They are interesting and complex, with complicated chord changes and a lyric that tends to tell a story.”

Appreciation of the yacht rock genre is growing.

“There’s fun and nostalgia to these songs, and it connects to people of our generation,” Ocean said. “But the cool thing is, since the pandemic, there’s been a resurgence, and it exposed a much younger generation to this music. We just played five shows in the New England and New York area, and we saw kids under 10 with captain’s hats on, singing the songs like they’ve known them all their lives.”

The success of Yachtley Crew has taken even the band by surprise.

“We had no idea of the attraction it would have on people,” Ocean said. “We started this in 2017, just because we thought it would be fun. We grew up with this music and love it. But it’s always been the guilty pleasure, the elevator music. It was a sin to admit you liked it.”

Fans responded to the act from the very first show.

“It’s cool to see this music get to have a second life, or a third or fourth, or whatever life it’s on,” Ocean said.

Yachtley Crew recently released its first album, “Seas the Day,” on Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records. It includes five classic yacht rock songs (“How Deep Is Your Life,” “Lido Shuffle, “Steal Away,” “Ride Like the Wind” and “How Long Has This Been Going On?”) plus one original, “Sex on the Beach.”

The latter tune sounds like a hit waiting to happen.

“We’ve all had careers and made original music, so bringing our own creations was a goal,” Ocean said. “But the timing had to be right. [‘Sex on the Beach’] fits right in alongside the other songs on the album and sounds like it’s from the era, both in lyric and theme. It tells a specific story, kind of tongue in cheek, with a playfulness.”

The video stars actor Mario Lopez, who is a fan of the band, as the bartender. Check it out HERE .

Thursday’s concert at the Robins Theatre starts at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $45 to $25 and are available at the theater’s box office and its website .
