Inside Late ‘Deinde Fernandez’s Yatch, Yemoja | …Amazing Pics of rooms, bath, others inside

yemoja yacht

“His adorable yacht, Yemoja is a delight.   The two-storey wonder has spectacular sitting and dining rooms, a lavish master bedroom with two baths, two children’s rooms, a gym and entertainment centre among other heavenly paraphernalia”.

But the pictures are there for us to see.   In living vivid colors; the resounding successes of Nigeria’s most colorful billionaire, a recurring perpetual echo, is a tale we are proud to tell. Renowned and well-known round the globe, the tall, dark and refined 64 year old man of commerce and diplomacy is an embodiment of good form, surrounding himself with exquisite things only money alone can not buy. From his superlative yacht, Yemoja, six luxurious private jets, head turning beautiful popping chateau in France, the eulogized master of the game has that rare gift of discern splendor that is impeccable. With his eye for details and uncommon panache, Ambassador Deinde Fernandez tower anywhere. Romanticized by most of Nigeria’s richest men, and women, his is the icing on an elaborately decorated multi-tier cake.

“His homes around the world have awards and gifts from every where.   And his dinning rooms usually have flags of visiting head of states.   And some of the most popular world leaders have special seat made for them”

The shinning light has friends in the highest places, mixing with super heavyweights of all races.   During his lifetime, beloved John Fitzergerald Kennedy , assassinated United States of America’s president was a friend. Among his inner circle of friends are ex-president George Bush (of USA), Gnassingbe Eyadema (of Togo) and Samora Michel ( Samora & Gnassingbe are late ) The stamp of luxury and splendor are trademarks of the high chief’s fancy but classy and timeless possessions.

“Well-grounded in Yoruba culture and tradition, Chief Fernandez owns a 340 square kilometers diamond plant in Angola. The Ambassador-at-large for Congo , Angola and Mozambique is United Nation’s permanent representative for Central African Republic”.

The all-steel motor yacht is 46.90 meters in over all length, 8.60 meters in beam and 2.75 meters in draft.   The gracious lady on water exceedingly satisfied its discerning owner. The lower deck provides roomy accommodation for Chief Fernandez and family. The owner’s suite has an exquisite sitting room area, his and hers bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes and a lavish bedroom. Atinuke and Abimbola’s cabins (the children) both have different themes.   There are butterfly and parrot themes. The yacht’s magnificent stairway spanning three decks have carved antelope heads in the balustrade.

… The Island & Chateau Palaces too If you think Ambassador Antonio Fernandez’s taste is lavished only on Yemoja, come with us to his paradise on an island in New York (United States of America). With all the modern services a town might require including a fire service station, and a long bridge leading to the palace, this mansion takes the cake. Lavishly decorated rooms, with golden balustrade, dining room with golden chandeliers, it is splendor at its highest. When the water level is high, the state-of-the-art cars are automatically raised above sea level, protecting all objects on ground. Well-fortified, the Island home is impenetrable.

The chateau in France, once owned by Napoleon Bonaparte is another architectural master piece.   With everything you can think of, it is on a large expanse of land as big as a village. And the interior bears the indelible signature of the wealthy merchant.   Only the best is good enough, and the chateau displays all the beauty under the sun. His homes around the world have awards and gifts from every where.   And his dinning rooms usually have flags of visiting head of states.   And some of the most popular world leaders have special seat made for them. The guardian of panache and prosperity travels in style.   He has six up-to-the minute private jets (Two Gulf streamer G4 and 900 Boeing ).

Nine yachts Africa’s wealthiest people have owned

Isabella Dos Santos (Angola)

If you had all the money in the world, what type of yacht would you buy?

Would it be a $65-million Benetti B .NOW 68M, a $25-million 141-footer Mangusta Oceano 42, or a more subtle $5-million Sunseeker 76?

When it comes to splurging on yachts, African billionaires are not as brazen as some of their foreign counterparts.

For context: Roman Abramovich’s new superyacht, Solaris , costs an estimated $600 million. Another, lesser billionaire, vodka tycoon Yuri Shefler, who is worth $2.4 billion, according to Forbes, once owned Serene , a superyacht which he sold off in 2015 to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman for a reported $550 million. The most expensive yacht ever owned by an African billionaire is arguably Illusion – formerly called Galactica Star – previously owned by Nigerian fugitive oil tycoon Kola Aluko. And it was reportedly worth $50 million .

Here are nine yachts that have been owned by some of Africa’s richest people of all time – some living, others, dead.

Former owner: Isabel dos Santos, Angolan

The 49.8-meter superyacht Hayken is a custom-built Heesen yacht owned by troubled Angolan billionaire Isabel dos Santos. She reportedly acquired the yacht from London property developer Christian Candy. Hayken sports an aluminium superstructure and hydrodynamic hull that allows her to sail with minimal fuel consumption. Its exterior was designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects and its interior by Francesco Paszkowski. The naval architecture of the yacht was designed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Hayken offers accommodation for up to 12 guests across five staterooms with ensuites and a luxurious master suite. Powered by twin MTU 16V 4000 M90 diesel engines, Hayken can reach a maximum speed of 23 knots and she cruises at 17 knots.

Boadicea

Owner: Gabriele Volpi, Nigerian

Boadicea is owned by Italian-Nigerian billionaire Gabriele Volpi, founder of Orlean Invest. The 76.6-meter yacht was initially built by Amels of Netherlands for Australian media mogul Reg Grundy. It has a beam of 14 meters, a draft of 4.2 meters and a volume of 2,191 GT. She can accommodate 16 guests and a crew of 23. She is powered by two Caterpillar engines. Boadicea can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots and a cruise speed of 13 knots.

Owner: King Mohammed VI, Moroccan

Badis I is owned by King Mohammed VI of Morocco. The 229.8-foot/70-meter custom-sail yacht was built by Perini Navi in Italy. The interior was designed by PHDesign to comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins, which include a master suite, two VIP staterooms and three double cabins. She also has the capacity to carry up to 11 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Powered by 2 MTU (16V 2000 M72) 1,930-horsepower diesel engines and propelled by her twin screw propellers sailing yacht, Badis I is capable of a top speed of 17.5 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12.5 knots when powered by her engines.

Illusion, formerly known as Galactica Star

Former owner: Kola Aluko , Nigerian

Illusion, formerly known as Galactica Star, is a 65-meter/213-foot motor yacht built by Heesen. It was built for long-range cruising, with a 4,200 nautical mile range at 14 knots and a fast cruise speed in the range of 28 knots. The custom-built interior was designed by Bannenberg & Rowel and offers accommodation for up to six guests in 12 cabins, which comprises one master, one VIP and four double staterooms. Galactica Star was delivered to controversial Nigerian oil tycoon Kola Aluko in 2013, but it was seized and sold in 2019 by the U.S. government following a court-ordered seizure of Aluko’s assets due to possible connections to a continuing Nigerian oil corruption case. It was subsequently purchased by American businessman David McKenzie, head of Associated Television International.

Former owner: Mohammed Al-Fayed, Egyptian

Sokar is a luxury yacht once owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohammed Al-Fayed, the founder of Harrods department store in Knightsbridge. The 63.7-meter motor yacht was built by the Italian superyacht yard Codecasa in steel and aluminium to a design by naval architect Vincenzo Ruggiero. The yacht’s extensive accommodation provides for 18 guests in a master suite and eight double staterooms, all with en suite bathroom facilities. She is equipped with two 3,760 horsepower engines. The yacht also has a beam of 10.4 meters and a draft of 3.9 meters. Sokar was renamed Bash by its current owner, who acquired it in 2021.

Former owner: Deinde Fernandez, Nigerian

Hud Hud, formerly called Yemoja is a motor yacht with a length of 46.9 meters. It has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and was built by Dutch shipmaker Feadship who delivered the yacht in 1994. Its first owner was the late Nigerian billionaire Deinde Fernandez. The yacht features exterior and interior design by De Voogt Naval Architects and Larvor, respectively, with naval architecture by De Voogt Naval Architects. Its features include a beam of 8.6 meters, a draft of 2.75 meters and a volume of 558 GT. It accommodates up to eight guests and 10 crew members, including the captain. The yacht Hud Hud has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. She is powered by two Caterpillar Inc engines, which give her a cruising speed of 13.0 knots and a top speed of 14.5 knots.

Owner: Femi Otedola, Nigerian

Nana is a Sunseeker Predator 108 motor yacht owned by Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola, the chairman of Geregu Power. The 32.91-meter motor yacht has a beam of 6.3 meters, a draft of 1.2 meters and a volume of 142 GT. It can accommodate up to eight guests and four crew members. Nana has a grp hull and grp superstructure. She is powered by three MTU engines, which give her a cruising speed of 28 knots and a top speed of 42 knots. The yacht carries 11,000 liters of fuel onboard, and 1,800 liters of water. Nana is capable of a top speed of 42 knots, and comfortably cruises at 28 knots.

Owner: Naguib Sawiris, Egyptian

Yalla, built by CRN Yacht, is owned by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris. The 73-meter yacht can accommodate 12 guests in six suites, and she has facilities for 22 crew members. Her interior was designed by Droulers Architecture, while her exterior was designed by Omega Architects. The yacht is powered by two Caterpillar engines, which bring her a top speed of 18.5 knots. Her cruise speed is 13 knots.

Owner: Aliko Dangote, Nigerian

Africa’s richest man is the owner of a Sunseeker Predator 108-foot motor yacht christened, “Mariya.” Mariya is designed to comfortably accommodate up to eight guests overnight in four cabins, comprising a master suite, one VIP stateroom and two twin cabins. Mariya is capable of a top speed of 44 knots and comfortably cruises at 30 knots.

Yemoja: The Yoruba water goddess celebrated by Afro-Brazilians every New Year’s Eve

yemoja yacht

Every New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro, millions of celebrants in Brazil mark festivities in the name of the sea goddess Iemanja. But not many people know that she was taken to the New World by Yoruba slaves from Africa.

The celebrations on December 31 in Rio reportedly took in almost 3 million people, who danced, sang and chanted into the first day of 2020.

CGTN America reported that the celebration came at a whopping cost of $2.5 million to the state. But all of that money may be the right price for what the people came for.

Lucrecia Franco wrote,”…like many other Brazilian takes on celebrations, New Year’s Eve draws from its African roots. Drums, rituals of Candomblé and Umbanda, the two main Afro Brazilian religions.”

For worshippers in Afro-Brazilian religions, it is only fair that the water goddess Yemoja, or Iemanja, as they know it, is paid homage by the people in the country with the world’s famous beach culture.

Yemoja is a major deity or orisha, in the Yoruba pantheon of superbeings. She is the goddess of the sea and other waters.

Yemoja: The Yoruba water goddess celebrated by Afro-Brazilians every New Year's Eve

But Yemoja is a little more than that. She is a mother spirit which means that in the cosmology of the Yoruba, she is the primordial bringer of life.

What follows in the same logic is the conceptualization of Yemoja as the patron saints of women, motherhood and femininity. It is Yemoja that women pray to in order to have children, or the ability to care for them and the family.

In Yoruba, Yemoja etymologically approximates to “mother of fish children”, an eponym of a sort that also connects her utility as the patron saint of the fisherfolk.

It is in this role as the goddess of the seas that she is most noted in the Americas. And in Brazil where Yemoja has become a fixture thanks to the Candomblé and Umbanda , all the festivities in her honor are as a result of what she is thought to have done for the seas and seafarers.

In Salvador where the Candomblé is very popular, Iemanja is celebrated on February 2. But with the exception of the number of celebrants, what happens in Salvador is no different from Rio.

During the festivities, Iemanja is offered flowers at the seashore in the morning and her followers watch while the water carries away the flowers. Incantations are said, among which are prayers of thanksgiving and safekeeping.

In the night, music and dancing ensue all night long. Among the followers in Candomblé where Iemanja’s celebrations are a little more sacred than fun, other activities accompany.

People can make shrines out of sea sand to Iemanja on the day of celebrations. Apart from flowers, beauty products such as perfume, lipstick, jewelry may also be consecrated to the goddess.

Yemoja: The Yoruba water goddess celebrated by Afro-Brazilians every New Year's Eve

Food is also offered but it has to be the color of white. Statuettes of the goddess atop replica boats should also be available at the beach for worshippers.

The worshippers believe that if one’s gift is washed up on the shore, Iemanja has rejected it. But she has accepted your offering if the waters take it away.

Discovering the Rich History and Symbolism of Yemoja, the Mother of All Orishas

Every year in October, the Yoruba people of South-Western Nigeria give thanks to the water spirit known as Yemoja. She is ancient goddess, believed to be the maternal figure to the hundreds of nature-based orisha's the Yoruba people revere. The special day is called 'Odun Yemoja', set aside by her followers to remember and celebrate their beloved goddess.

Yemoja is a pivotal part of ancient Yoruba pantheon. Her name comes from the words 'Yeye-omo-eja' translated as 'Mother whose children are fish', and she is associated with water and the ocean. She is often depicted in lore as a mermaid with androgynous features and her followers stretch far, from West Africa, Cuba, Brazil and many others.

Bode market, Molete is the setting for the occasion - here is where the Yemoja shrine can be found. The community is made up of narrow passageways and interconnected buildings, as is conversant with the classic mode of building for the Yoruba, and these passageways house tales, rituals and relics as old as the Yoruba pantheon itself.

Yemoja worship, African spirituality, African goddess, African religion, Yoruba religion

The faces of the community reverberated warm auras. They were preparing to honor the beloved goddess, whose presence is associated with peace, prosperity, and good fortune for those who honor her .

Adults were dressed in blue and white regalia, the colors the goddess is associated with, and they accessorized with colorful beads, cowries and flamboyant hairstyles. They shared cheerful greetings and prepped for the ceremony, while the laughter of children lulled through the corridors.

The Yemoja shrine was the hub of all the activity, and it was our first stop for the day. It is customary to pay a visit to the Yemoja shrine to pay respects, and offer prayers and sacrifices to the deity and in return she blesses, protects and guides. People offer all kinds of things from flowers, fruits, cooked food and live animals. Sacrifices are a big part of Nigerian spirituality and I go deeper into that here .

yoruba offering, nigerian spirituality, yemoja, bode market, west african spirituality

The excitement grew steadily fueled by the music and dancing and songs in the goddess' honour. Yemoja worship brought the community together in a warm way and I was touched. The celestial being is seen as a caring, protective and healing figure, plus her association with water and the seas gives one a sense of calmness despite how powerful she can be. The rituals and ceremonies are done in the open and gives a sense of community because they are practicing it together, so there is a strong sense of hope and optimism.

children of yemoja, fertility goddess, yoruba ancestry

Another interesting thing to note, is the depiction of the Goddess. Her imagery shows characteristics that blur the lines between male and female. For example, the statue below show male characteristics in the face and shoulders, but also features breasts used in nursing one of her children. This blending of traits suggests that ancient African spirituality creates and has always created spaces for the intersex, the trans and all other in between children.

yemoja statue, fertility goddess, goddess of the sea

Too often, especially in Nigerian societies, we tend to think in the binary - things must either be this or the other - but the world and the humans in it are way more complicated than that. Leading with love and showing no prejudice are the only way to coexist and I was pleased to discover that the ancient Yoruba not only do that, but also elevate them to demigod status in their society.

Baale Yemoja getting ready to perform the propitiation rituals

When it was time to move the party to the waterside, we paraded excitedly alongside a crowd several hundreds strong. Fruit, cooked meals, yams, small birds and goat in hand; she would be eating well on this day! We followed the drainage canal to the point where it connected to the stream, and this was the point the head priest offered these items to Yemoja.

Once this was done, parents eagerly dunked their children into the water, as they prayed for protection in the months and years to come. It filled me with so much joy as a witnessed perhaps the greatest show of love on this day, a nurturing love that makes it apparent to the children that they are cherished and they are whole. One of the best experiences I have ever had.

These fantastic pictures are courtesy of Ugochukwu Emebiriodo and you can find his work @Hitchoflife .

To see video content of the celebration, you can watch it on TikTok or on Instagram .

My only concern is the level of hygiene of this waterway and I think effort should be put into keeping it clean all year round. It is a holy site that children are being put in contact with so as not to expose them to harmful organisms, but other than that, an experience that I would never trade for anything. Don't forget to like, share, and put your thoughts in the comments!
