Skippered by John Bertrand, she was the challenger that secured the first successful Cup challenge, ending the New York Yacht Club’s 132-year reign (with 26 successful defenses). Designed by Ben Lexcen, built by Steve Ward, owned by Alan Bond, and helmed by John Bertrand, Australia II’s design featured a reduced waterline length and a winged keel with a short chord, providing a significant advantage in maneuverability and reduced heeling moment (lower center of gravity) but proved to be a significant disadvantage in rough seas. The yacht was also exceptionally fast upwind. The winged keel was a major advancement in design, and its legality was questioned by the New York Yacht Club . During the summer of 1983, as the selection trials were underway to defend the Cup that autumn, the New York Yacht Club challenged the legality of the winged keel design. The controversy was ultimately ruled in favor of Australia II. Australia is a famous racing yacht that represented Australia in the 1983 America's Cup, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing races in the world. Designed by Ben Lexcen, Australia was a revolutionary yacht that featured a unique winged keel design, which gave it superior speed and manoeuvrability compared to its competitors. This design caused controversy and legal challenges from other teams, but ultimately it was allowed to compete. Australia's skipper, John Bertrand, led the team to a historic victory in the 1983 America's Cup, defeating the American yacht Liberty in a dramatic and closely contested series of races. The victory ended the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak in the America's Cup, and it was a moment of great pride and celebration for Australia. Today, Australia is considered a national treasure and an important part of Australia's sailing history. The yacht is currently on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, where visitors can learn more about its design and racing history. Be the first to review this product. Australia II$ 400.00 Australia II Yacht ShipVisit us on Facebook DescriptionAustralia ii – model yacht ship. Designed by Ben Lexcen, built by Stephan Ward, owned by Alan Bond and helmed by John Bertrand, the Australia II featured an innovative winged keel design developed by Lexcen. This helped to make it very fast and maneuverable in many conditions, and was the most notable and controversial design feature of the boat. During the summer of 1983, as selection trials took place for the Cup defense that autumn, it was unclear whether the keel design was legal within the strict rules governing the 12-metre class. Questions also surrounded the Dutch involvement in the design of the keel, which under the rules had to be designed by an Australian. The keel design was eventually confirmed as legal while the keel origin controversy remains unanswered. Despite being the first 12-metre to sport the new design, Australia II was not the first boat to have a winged keel, though her success did much to make the concept popular. Recommended PostsWith the Buzzards Bay 14 & 12 1/2 proto-type nearing completion , I decided to build the 1983 Americas cup winner AUSTRALIA II KA-6 .( in a 3/16" = 1' - 0" Scale.) This will be a hull only build . When I was a kid, this Boat with all it's inovations gave the America's Cup a wake up call. it kinda ended an Era, soon after, corporate sponsorships and constant rule's changes would be a constant thing .( anyone who follows the Cup knows what I mean) Don't get me wrong I am still a big fan of the America's Cup . This to me is the Boat that shook up the Cup . And is a Boat that I have wanted to build for a long time . So I thought I would squeeze it in before I start the Revised Herreshoff 12 1/2 , Plus it should be alot of fun to build - augie , mtaylor , Omega1234 and 5 others

I first layed out the Keel with the help of tracing paper and the lines drawing . I then cut out the Keel, and started to lay out the frames and deck. I think this will be a fun build , She's like 65 ft. long ( so I am not just building small boats LOL) Here are the results - piperjoe , hexnut , mtaylor and 3 others
She has some sweet lines, Pete, and it'll be great to see an America's Cup build that's unique--looking forward to following along as you bring her to life! Current Build: Ariel Excellent. A great yacht to build! The original is now housed in the Fremantle Maritime Museum in Western Australia. Love it!!! The kA6 also has a very strong place in my heart too. What a wonderful boat and a formidable achievement to have beat Liberty with Dennis Cooner at the helm! I'm definitely going to follow this one. Regards, Keith Oh this does look interesting Peter, I will be following along as well. Great idea, Pete. The America's Cup boats have come a long way since those days. Australia II looks almost quaint! The modern stuff today do not have the lines or the look or the grace. A classic beauty. Have fun with the build. Thank you Jay , She has all the right elements, lines, beauty and speed Thank you Geoff, did you take a sicky ? . and a prime minister who was a beer sculling champion. thats Awesome Thank you Michael, I hope she turns out as well as the Herreshoff's Thank you David B., I would like to keep it a simple build , so just the hull . Thank you Michael Mott , There is always room for 1 more Thank you John, I have wanted to build an Americas Cup Boat , since I was a kid . I think Australia 2 is the perfect boat for this build Thank you Omega, I was in high School when liberty lost the cup . I remember watching it on tv . it turned the sailing world upside down . I saw the cup in San diego in 87 after Dennis won it back ( Stars and Stripes The last of the 12 meters) Thank you Keith, for the Awesome photos . its pretty amazing to see them in person , in 92 I saw NZL 20 up close ( its very impressive ) I would love to go to Fremantle Thank you Robert , it should be fun to figure out the wing keel Thank you Tom, The America's Cup has come along way ( I remember when the cup was in court , back in 88 due to a hostile Dead of Gift Challenge ) the races went on, and we defended with a catamaran ( wich was not ever spoken in the same sentence as Americas Cup ) Now look that what the Americas cup has become ( see pic ) Thank you Augie , should be a fun build Best Regards, - Aussie048 , mtaylor , hexnut and 1 other
Today, I actually got more time to build than I thought. I started by laying out the rest of the frames. ( for anyone that is new to scratch building , When you use a lines drawing for your plans , You have to subtract the thickness of your planking from the frame's . or your boat will have to much Beam... just throwing it out there ) I then cut them out with an X-Acto knife ( I do not use power tools when I build models, I save that for Full size builds ) I then thought to add the America's Cup logo to the Keel . I then cut out the notches in the Keel and frames, and dry fit them . Next I cut out the deck , I then dry fit all the pieces ( I still have to trim a few frames to deck height) My wife thinks she is very Sleek , and I have to agree. I am having alot of fun with this one . I am off to the Family 4th party. Here are the results - Elmer Cornish , Jay 1 , piperjoe and 11 others
Very nice, but it looks as if your deck is going to be completely flat? How are you going to install the little depression in the deck for the crewmen (not sure what you call it), given that your bulkheads rise to the level of the deck? Very nice Pete!!! Construction is really kicking along quickly and smoothly. Well done. Can't wait for further installments as the progress continues. Hope you have wonderful evening of celebrations with your family! Hi Keith , I should have mentioned in the beginning that the sheer line is cut into the Keel. ( so the top if the keel is the bottom of the deck or deck height ) there wont be any cockpit details as this is a hull only build . the tops of the frames will be cut down to match the deck height , thus giving her the sheer line once the deck is installed . if you look at the photo you can see that the frames are to tall ( I do that so there is wiggle room ) nothing at this stage of the build has been glued . - mtaylor , egkb , Piet and 2 others
Hi Omega , Thanks, She is practicaly building herself , everything so far has gone together very easy , She has been alot of fun to build Hi Jay , It was quite the shin-dig last night , I dont think I will need to eat this week . Fortunatly, I learned the reduction in Half bredths from my Dad,( I was about 14 years old ) and the use of scantling's to make all the calculations for the frames and keel . I have been bitten by the lofting itself a few times . ( most recent is the 12 1/2 proto-type , the profile drawing was incorrect ) it resulted into alot of fairing , I can totally relate Hi Geoff , The Boxing Kangaroo, is now her nickname in this house.( Full credit goes to you ,) I think it would be great to see other's who want to take on this build . or any of the modern AC boats. here is a shot of Australia II tacking over Liberty . and I had to throw in the other shot as well - egkb , Omega1234 , mtaylor and 3 others
Good work Pete, you work fast. She's really coming along well, Pete! Thats right Geoff, I remember that song . It was on the radio all the time . Thank's Robert , It's not that I work fast , it's that I am constantly working Thank you John , "The Boxing Kangaroo" Has been a fun build so far. Pete- gotta admit, that I can't wait to see KA6 come to life. I too, have seen her at the Fremantle Maritimpe Museum and she is certainly every bit the holy grail of yachts; just as much as the Americas Cup, itself. Would you know whatever happened to Liberty? Is she in a Museum somewhere in the US, perhaps? Pete I am looking forward to seeing this boxing kangaroo go forward. You might even get a few more wanting to take on this build. Cheers Geoff I love the pic Geoff , my wife thinks its great , It's Very inspiring ( I better not mess this one up ) Thank you Omega, I am not sure what happened to liberty, I will have to look into it ,( she may be a charter boat ) I am not sure wich cup boats are on display at the Herreshoff Museum and America's Cup Hall of fame, Last I checked they had America3 , another thing I will look into Hi Omega, and for anyone else who is intrested . I did some research on liberty. It seems that She was sold to a Japanese Broker and shipped to Japan. Here is the Quote I found : "For the boat, Dennis Conner's 'Liberty',we do not know about what she is doing now. However, she had been in Japan certainly. We know some sailors who had sailed Liberty. Since she has been lost, many people looked for her, and we received a lot of inquiries about it. May be someone who didn't know about her history sold or let her die (rusting away) “ But the yacht was the only one up to now which forced the challenger to sail all 7 rounds before she lost finally 4 : 3 ". And here is a pic of her being shipped off from San Diego - Elmer Cornish , dgbot , SawdustDave and 2 others
Thanks for that. What a sad ending for a boat that's, in some ways, every bit as famous as KA6. Liberty would make a good subject for your next model. Hint? Hi Omega, Perhaps ,or the 87 winner,or Maybe a 92 challenger ( hint ) Hi Pete. Nice thought, but I'm looking at something like another dockyard style model of a three masted warship to keep me off the streets! Hi Omega, I hear what you are saying, the " Boxing Kangaroo " to me is the Cup Boat to build ( I had considered others ) She's got that certain somthing that the others just dont have . - mtaylor , Piet , egkb and 5 others

Website Designed by Bocain Designs Sailors met by family on dry land after yacht rescue in 'horrendous conditions'By Millie Roberts A man and a woman have returned to dry land after being rescued from a yacht on the New South Wales South Coast. Brett and Lisa were saved during a multi-agency rescue on Tuesday morning, before docking in Sydney on Tuesday. Lisa, 48, said she was feeling "safe and secure and happy" after the ordeal. A man and woman have expressed gratitude for being back on dry land after they were rescued from a stricken yacht on the New South Wales South Coast on Tuesday. Brett, 60, and Lisa, 48, were found "safe and sound" about 170 nautical miles east of Nowra at around 7:30am. "I am so pleased to say that this rescue operation has been a resounding success," NSW Marine Area Command Acting Superintendent Siobhan Munro said. The rescue mission was launched off the South Coast after a distress beacon was activated about 1pm on Monday. Two sailors, Lisa and Brett, were rescued off the NSW coast after their yacht began taking on water. ( ABC News: Victoria Pengilley ) At the time, the yacht was 85 nautical miles from Sydney, and had drifted 160 nautical miles offshore by the time emergency services reached Brett and Lisa. "That's how strong the winds were and how fast it was, pushing the vessel away," NSW Marine Area Command Sergeant Ryan Spong said of the conditions. The 19-metre vessel, Spirit of Mateship, had experienced mechanical failure and was taking on water, Ben Flight from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said on Tuesday morning. Spirit of Mateship was left abandoned at sea following the rescue. ( Supplied: POB Jason Herrmann ) It's believed Brett and Lisa left Jervis Bay on Sunday or Monday for Sydney, NSW Marine Area Command Chief Inspector Anthony Brazzill said. On Tuesday, a multi-agency operation retrieved the pair "in some quite horrendous conditions", Sergeant Spong added. The pair were taken on board NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis, and thanked everyone involved in their return to Sydney. Lisa said she was feeling "safe and secure and happy" despite not getting much sleep last night. The 60-year-old man and 48-year-old woman were greeted by family members at the NSW Police Area Command in Balmain. ( ABC News: Victoria Pengilley ) Brett said the waiting was "alright" and that the boat was "safe" and "more than seaworthy". "It was more we were tired, seasick, we couldn't continue any further," he said. "That was a decision we made to call ... it could have got worse ... I think we made the right decision." The Nemesis passed through Sydney Heads just before 6pm, before the pair were met by family in Balmain half an hour later. Spirit of Mateship, which has raced in several Sydney to Hobart yacht races, was abandoned at sea. 2 people are rescued from a disabled yacht off the Australian coastTwo people have been rescued unharmed Tuesday after spending a night aboard a disabled yacht in the heavy seas off the Australian coast SYDNEY — Two people were rescued unharmed Tuesday after spending a night aboard a disabled yacht in heavy seas off the Australian coast. The 60-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were rescued at 7:30 a.m. from their 19-meter (62-foot) yacht, which was abandoned 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of the New South Wales state coast, Police Chief Inspector Anthony Brazzill said. The pair were expected to reach Sydney aboard a police boat Tuesday night. The pair had activated their emergency beacon around 1 p.m. Monday, about 185 kilometers (115 miles) east of the New South Wales coastal town of Nowra, police said. The yacht, “Spirit of Mateship,” had experienced a mechanical failure, lost a rudder, was taking water and was drifting east away from the shore, Brazzill said. With an ocean swell of 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet) and winds of up 110 kilometers (70 miles) per hour, he said, conditions were considered too dangerous to attempt a rescue in the dark. An air force C-130 Hercules transport plane flew to the yacht and made radio contact with the two people onboard. A police boat and an Australian navy warship reached the yacht early Tuesday. Brazzill said a winching rescue by military helicopter was considered, but ruled out as too dangerous because of the sea conditions. The pair were rescued in a small craft launched from the police boat, he said. My Hero Academia: You're NextIzuku Midoriya, a U.A.
