An environmental workshop for superyacht crew

Companies and crew are joining ocean ambassador emily penn for an educational event in barcelona….

yacht crew barcelona

The captain and owner of M/Y Awatea are joining forces with a number of superyacht companies to organise an environmental event in Barcelona. Evolution Yachts, MB92, Y.CO, OneOcean Port Vell, alongside The YachtCrew Environmental Society and ocean advocate Emily Penn, are to host superyacht crew for the day.

The event, which includes a beach clean-up and a ‘waste art’ creation session, is spearheaded by M/Y Awatea as part of the yacht’s ongoing commitment to encourage the industry to take responsibility for its ecological impact. Captain Micheal Duncker, speaking to SuperyachtNews , explains that he sees this as an opportunity for all levels of crew to get involved in looking after the environment in which they work. “It shouldn’t just be a hierarchy-based programme," he says. "All crew should see that they can have a voice and can start something themselves to help us in safeguarding the environment.”

Duncker explains that he and the owner of M/Y Awatea were inspired to get involved in the Y.CO #Clearwater campaign after hearing Penn speak about the importance of combatting the rise of pollution in our oceans. Hatty Campbell, business development manager for Y.CO, explains that this is the core reason they began the campaign in 2017. “By educating yacht owners and their crew, we hope to help spread the word to those who are in a position to have real influence to make changes on a global scale,” she offers.

“By educating yacht owners and their crew we hope to help spread the word to those who are in a position to have real influence to make changes on a global scale.” - Hatty Campbell, Y.CO

The agenda for the day includes a workshop, led by Penn, to teach crew the small ways to change their behaviour and consumption of plastics. As Campbell explains, “The outcome of the event will raise awareness regarding the danger of single use plastic. We hope to change the mindset of yacht crew – and the industry as a whole – and inspire them to educate those around them.” There will also be a prize giving ceremony for the best work of art created from the rubbish collected during the beach clean-up.

The event, which takes place in Barcelona on April 3, is open to all crew currently based in the region. As a prominent shipyard in the area, MB92 were keen to get involved to demonstrate that anyone can help with environmental initiatives on a local level. “Global issues such as this can often seem daunting to someone wishing to affect change so it is a great opportunity for someone wanting to get involved and contribute to the cause,” believes customer care manager, Marina Peyrard. Furthermore, crew will be able to see the immediate impact of a beach clean-up in their local area; it is a tangible way to see the way that pollutants damage an environment. “Our hope that this event continues to galvanise this message and helps to catalyse positive action among the attendees and the wider superyacht community,” she adds.

“Our hope that this event continues to galvanise this message and helps to catalyse positive action among the attendees and the wider superyacht community.” - Marina Peyrard, MB92

Echoing this view, many of the companies supporting the event form a core part of the yachting industry in Barcelona. “We hope that in the least we get plastic pollution as a talked about topic in the Barcelona yachting community,” explains Kerry Allerton of Evolution Yacht Agents. “Great things start from small ideas and yacht crew are for the most part mobilised, reactive and dynamic citizens of the world, we just need to bring this issue to the foreground and get people thinking.” The inherent nature of crew travelling around the world means that, even though this beach clean-up is in Barcelona, the attitudes and methodologies that are showcased there can be spread wherever the crew cruise in the future.

Allerton believes that if  younger yacht crew are educated about the ways to reduce pollution now, it will become second-nature. “The yacht crew of today are the captains and project managers of tomorrow. If we start with small initiatives today, there is a higher chance that more sophisticated solutions to avoid or eliminate waste in a harmless way are conceived and implemented as integral parts of a yacht´s operating system.”

“For all of us within the industry as well as the communities in which we live and work, the ocean is our passion,” adds Peyrard. “We have a responsibility for ensuring that the next generations have the opportunity to enjoy the ocean as we do. Locally, the community in Barcelona have undertaken initiatives by working more closely together to implement change. However, further afield, the broader superyacht industry needs to be a vanguard for reform.”

It’s a hugely positive sign that so many yachting companies are joining together to raise awareness and educate crew about simple changes that have a big impact. For Captain Duncker, this collaboration showcases the importance of every facet of the yachting industry working together to alleviate the problem of pollution. “We have all found a common goal, and removed all egos, and discussed that this is to benefit everyone for generations to come.” This educational event is a great example of superyacht companies working with yachts and crew to ensure that the conversation about conservation continues to grow. As Allerton concludes, “Awareness is key and it is these kinds of events that are needed to plant seeds in the creative minds of the upcoming yachting generation.”

“We have all found a common goal, and removed all egos, and discussed that this is to benefit everyone for generations to come.” - Captain Micheal Duncker, M/Y 'Awatea'

These Boats Are Really Big, but Barcelona Has the Room

The city has become a hub for billionaires’ superyachts, banking on the strength of the “blue economy.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Launched less than a year ago, the 460-foot-long, eight-deck Solaris is one of the newest of the superyachts that are the floating palaces of the sea. It has a helipad, of course, plus a swimming pool and all the other high-tech amenities required by its Russian billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich .

But on a recent morning in Barcelona, the $600 million Solaris was out of the water, wedged into a dry dock, as workers toiled underneath its light-gray hull. They were fixing its finlike stabilizers, which help steady the massive vessel in rough seas but retract when there are no swells. At the opposite end of the boatyard, another giant, the Sea Rhapsody, was getting a final checkup before being put back into the water.

As the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic, their boats have gotten larger and more expensive — and when these over-the-top superyachts aren’t taking their owners to private holiday spots in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, they need a place to drop anchor and deal with repairs.

yacht crew barcelona

And it is here that Barcelona, whose days as a commercial shipyard faded years ago, sees an economic opportunity.

Barcelona has turned itself into a hub for these luxury vessels, combining a private marina that is investing 20 million euros ($22.7 million) this year to turn itself into the largest port reserved for superyachts in the Mediterranean and maintenance facilities that can hoist behemoths out of the water and then summon a small army to do repairs.

And it doesn’t hurt that Barcelona offers the ships’ crew members downtime in one of the Mediterranean’s biggest tourism destinations.

Attracting billionaire yacht owners is only a small part of Barcelona’s efforts to tap into the “blue economy” of the sea, said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. Barcelona’s port authority recently approved the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, set to open in 2024. The city is also overhauling the seafront area that was developed for the Summer Olympics of 1992, which Barcelona hosted.

The pandemic was a huge blow for a city that normally welcomes millions of visitors. It showed that “diversification is becoming very important,” Mr. Collboni said. “When tourism dropped down to zero, some parts of the city were heavily affected, and we have needed to find new jobs, also for a less qualified work force.”

At the same time, the spread of the coronavirus gave the world’s billionaires a new excuse for keeping their distance from other people, a role perfectly suited for superyachts.

Worldwide about 5,700 yachts are over 30 meters long (just under 100 feet), and this fleet is set to expand 15 percent by 2025, according to industry projections . At the pinnacle of this market are about 370 megayachts of over 60 meters, whose number has risen 70 percent in the past decade and is forecast to reach 500 in about seven years. Construction yards have been struggling to keep up: The order book for superyachts is full until 2025.

MB92, the company that operates Barcelona’s superyacht maintenance facility, known as a refit yard, has 180 employees, but much of the labor is carried out by about 1,000 subcontractors whose jobs cover a variety of specialties, including painting, carpentry and insulation work. About 40 workshops are scattered around the yard, and during the peak repair seasons of spring and fall the yard can work on about 25 yachts at a time.

The yacht maintenance business has been jumping. MB92, which also owns a smaller yard in La Ciotat, France, reported revenue of €191 million (about $215 million) in 2021, up from €150 million in 2019.

Even if a superyacht is a striking showcase of wealth, owners expect those working for them to keep silent about their assets and whereabouts. When asked about the Sea Rhapsody’s destination once it left the yard, Henk Dreijer, the commercial director of MB92, demurred, suggesting that it was bound for “the Caribbean, but it could also be the Seychelles or somewhere else.”

“We work for people who like to be very discreet,” he added.

In Barcelona, which is led by a left-wing city government , not everybody welcomes the arrival of billionaires and their yachts, whose marinas are typically fenced off from the rest of the city’s waterfront.

“We are bringing in the richest people in the world, but they don’t spend their money in our local neighborhoods, they have yachts that fly the flags of tax havens, and they hire crews who are not from Barcelona,” said Gala Pin, a city lawmaker in Barcelona until 2019.

“We have also allowed private and very opaque companies to squeeze profits from public land and instead fence off access to a port area that should be enjoyed by all the citizens of Barcelona,” she added.

A decade ago, Ms. Pin and other residents held demonstrations to protest the initial project to develop Port Vell, a privately owned marina for luxury yachts. But Ms. Pin now concedes that the yacht business is very firmly anchored in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the city’s dwindling fishing fleet is squeezed into a small enclave, sandwiched between MB92’s yard and the superyacht marina.

Port Vell is in the midst of a major overhaul to become the largest superyacht marina in the Mediterranean. It is jointly owned by QInvest, a Qatari investment firm, and a group of investors led by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the Russian oil company Lukoil. Mr. Alekperov is also a partner in a fund run by Squircle Capital, a private equity firm based in Luxembourg. In 2019, Squircle bought a majority stake in MB92, the shipyard operator.

Even if the owners spend little time in Barcelona, the largest of these yachts have several dozen crew members who make lengthy stays and are “people with salaries that are generally higher than local salaries and money that they have not been spending on board,” said Ignacio Erroz, the director general of Port Vell. He said a PwC study commissioned by his company had estimated that Port Vell contributed €30 million a year to Barcelona’s economy.

Mr. Erroz forecast that Barcelona would continue to grow as a superyacht hub, in large part because “being able to anchor right in the heart of a big city is a major selling point.” But he also anticipated tougher competition.

“I think we will see many more existing ports adapting their infrastructure to welcome this kind of boat,” he said.

Raphael Minder covers Spain and Portugal, based in Madrid. He previously worked for Bloomberg News in Switzerland and for the Financial Times in Paris, Brussels, Sydney and finally Hong Kong. More about Raphael Minder

Yacht rental in Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital of the province of Catalonia. It is located in a uniquely picturesque area south of the Pyrenees, on the border with France, next to the Mediterranean coast. Tourists from all over the world come here to spend at least a few days on an unforgettable trip. Renting a boat in Barcelona is one of the most effective ways to discover the Costa del Maresme or Costa Brava in all its splendor, get great pleasure and enjoy your holiday in this unusual and original place.

The best time to travel starts in the first days of May and ends in the last days of October. This is the most favorable season when the sun shines around the clock in Barcelona and there is almost no rain. The only thing that can overshadow the rental of a boat in Barcelona during the high season is the huge crowds of tourists. They are everywhere — on the streets of the city, on the beaches, in restaurants, in amusement parks…

However, there is a proven way to relax in privacy, and avoid crowds — hiring a boat. It will allow you to visit incredibly beautiful deserted bays and beaches, which can only be reached by water. This is only possible if you book the boat in advance. If you take care of this in advance, even before the start of the high season, you can choose a boat at a lower price from a large range of unoccupied options for the desired date and time.

Boat rental services in Barcelona by the hour will be provided by our company, and our experienced captains with their friendly team will do their best to make your vacation unforgettable. They are well-versed in the local area, so they will select the best routes, where nature is of indescribable beauty. Fuel is included in the cost of the cruise.

Do you want to book a boat for rent near you — from the place where you stayed in a hotel or rented temporary accommodation? We will select for you the best option from the many different yachts that are waiting for their passengers (from 2 to 250 people) in popular ports and marinas throughout Barcelona:

  • Port Olympic
  • Reil Club Maritim de Barcelona
  • Marina Port Vell
  • Real Club Nautico de Barcelona
  • Marina Vela Barcelona

Boat rental in Barcelona is paid by the hour. The most popular trip duration is 2-3 hours, but if you wish, you can hire a boat for the whole day and spend it on board from the first minutes of sunrise to sunset.

What events are suitable for renting a boat?

Traditionally, a boat for rent in Barcelona is rented out for any private, corporate, and business events. These services are in demand not only among tourists but also among the local population:

  • romantic walks along the sea coast with a photo session
  • family celebrations
  • friendly parties
  • stag parties
  • bachelorette parties
  • celebrating birthdays and anniversaries
  • original dates, sunrises-sunsets
  • wedding banquets
  • incendiary parties on board
  • intimate candlelit dinners
  • business meetings and corporate parties
  • team building and training
  • wedding photo shoots
  • yachting master classes
  • holding corporate regattas

Boat rental

If you hire a boat for 2 hours, you will have time to enjoy the views of the streets of Barcelona and its monuments, sailing through the oldest quarter, Barceloneta, and plunge into the Spanish sea.

A 4-hour boat rental in Barcelona will provide more opportunities — this will allow you to visit the famous Montgat beach, and swim in clean and clear water.

For an 8-hour boat trip, we recommend visiting the most outstanding and colorful places near Barcelona, such as::

  • Arenys de Mar
  • Castelldefels
  • Premia de Mar

During the break between sightseeing of the beauty of the port, you can taste specialties of Spanish cuisine in restaurants to continue this wonderful walk with renewed vigor. The length of its route and the distance from the coast depends on the type of boat. If you want to take a look at the world-famous resort of Sitges at least with one eye or walk along the chic Mediterranean coast of the Costa Brava, after visiting the progressive Blanes, hire a yacht or a motorboat — and you won’t regret it.

What services does our company offer besides yacht rentals?

To make your vacation on a yacht bright, eventful, and unforgettable, in addition to renting boats in Barcelona , our company provides the following services:

  • catering — booking food on board
  • photo and video filming
  • organization of entertainment on the water on a banana, wakeboard, flyboard, jet ski
  • decorating both the yacht itself and the deck with flowers, balls, and inscriptions, as well as its interior spaces — kitchens, cabins, halls
  • guided tours of the outstanding historical sites of Barcelona
  • host of events
  • DJ accompaniment of discos
  • invitation of popular artists for live performances
  • gift certificates for walks along the coast

Rent a boat

The ideal value, and money. The cost of their rental varies depending on the size of the yachts, the year of manufacture, and the popularity of the brand manufacturer, and is 100-350 euros/1 hour. The maximum capacity is up to 11 passengers.

Motor yachts

The rental price — 450-1200 euros/1 hour — is higher than other types of yachts. This is due to higher fuel consumption. However, this price justifies itself:

  • speed of movement, due to which visiting many places takes very little time;
  • level of comfort and a sense of luxury, because motor yachts have more space and more amenities.

The maximum passenger capacity is 20 guests.

The cost of renting catamarans is usually higher than classic sailing yachts, but cheaper than motor yachts, which is 250-550 euros/1 hour.

Depending on the dimensions, they can comfortably accommodate from 6 to 150 passengers on board.

Due to the stability of the water in any weather, catamaran trips are well tolerated even by those people who suffer from seasickness, and those who are constantly seasick on public transport.

This is a budget option for small companies of up to 9 people, with a rental price range of 100-350 euros/1 hour. In most cases, motorboats are rented by lovers of fishing, outdoor activities, and racing.

In the city of Barcelona, you can rent the following types of motor boats: speed boats with various toys and water activities, boats without a license, and luxury high-speed models.

Cosmopolitan 125 Catamaran

Described as a floating haven by Cosmopolitan, the multihull has an impressive interior volume of 500 GT and offers nearly 6,500 square feet of deck space. The living quarters are replete with “state-of-the-art amenities and luxurious finishes,” according to the yard.

The spacious layout includes four VIP guest cabins, one owner’s suite with a private terrace, three crew cabins, and a captain’s cabin. The guest accommodation is spread across the lower and main decks, while the owner’s cabin can be positioned on either the main deck or the bridge deck. The crew quarters are located on the lower deck, along with the crew mess, galley, and laundry.

The 125 offers more than just a place to sleep, of course. The main deck is home to a large living room with a TV and game area, while the upper deck is outfitted with a giant dining area and bar. A second bar and a gym can be found on the lower deck. Alfresco lounges are positioned forward and aft, while a helipad sits on the uppermost deck.

One of the standout features of the 125 is the beach club. The innovative platform is fitted with expandable terraces that open directly over the water to transform the stern into what Cosmopolitan calls “a private waterfront resort.” The sprawling space, which affords guests direct and easy access to the sea, can be used for sunbathing, swimming, or sundowners.

First guest: Ilma, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht and Boat

Start out with the big picture – what is this cruise line known for?

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is new to the cruising scene . Its first superyacht,  Evrima , launched in 2022, and  Ilma  is the second in its quickly expanding fleet. The collection is meant to provide all the luxury and freedom of a private yacht with the refinement and service Ritz-Carlton is known for. And I have to say they’re nailing it – I truly felt like I was aboard a yacht more than a cruise ship. All of the spaces are designed with intimacy in mind, and you can tell.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht Chair Furniture Handrail Couch Dining Table Table and Water

Tell us about the ship in general .

She’s sleek, sexy, and has a hotelier’s touch. I stayed at Hôtel Arts Barcelona, a Ritz-Carlton flagship before Ilma departed, and being onboard felt like a natural extension of the hotel. Everything felt comfortable, but not at the expense of style. My mind immediately goes to the director-style dining chairs on deck outside Mistral, the restaurant on deck 10, which were not only designed specifically for Ilma – sleek chrome for the base and classic nautical stripes for the cushions – but improved upon from Evrima for new dimensions catering to comfort. I also can’t rave enough about the linens throughout the ship, from the napkins to the sheets to the bathrobe (more on this later).

All of the decks on board are expansive but never feel overcrowded – the loungers, couches and tables are arranged to create pockets of intimate spaces, so you never feel like there are 400 other passengers onboard. There are 10 decks total, the upper deck (10) and lower decks (3-5) being the most social – the main pool deck is on top, with loungers spanning along both sides of the ship and smaller tables between. At the bow, there’s the observation deck, cleverly hidden on the far side of the swimming pool , with couches and its own bar. It’s so private that you almost feel like you might be in the wrong place (replaced quickly by the feeling that this is now your little secret). The lower decks house most of the restaurants, the fitness studio and spa, and the smaller (infinity) pool deck, as well as the Living Room, which has smaller groupings of couches and tables, separated by natural parts of the architecture, like pillars and bookshelves, so you feel like you’re in, well, someone’s well-appointed family room.

Every design decision feels purposeful because, of course, it is. Taking what they learned from Evrima and her guests, the Yacht Collection expanded much of Ilma ’s capacity to respond to what passengers gravitated toward the most, doubling the size of the fitness studios, the number of spa treatment rooms, and the number of loungers on deck, for which I was grateful. I was relieved not to have to wake up at dawn to stake my claim on a seat.

Who is on board?

Mostly couples, a few families, and a handful of solo travellers , all ranging in age. We had a lot of longtime Ritz loyalists, many who’d never cruised before, finally willing to give it a shot, thanks to Ilma .

Describe the cabins .

Spacious, airy, plenty of room to breathe. My cabin – a Grand Suite – had both dining and living areas and a bedroom that I could close off while sleeping, avoiding any gorgeous Mediterranean sunlight let in by the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding door too early in the morning. Running the whole width of the suite, the door opened onto a balcony to rival the decks above. I had two loungers and two armchairs all to myself, of which I made ample use.

I appreciated the two separate closet spaces (more than I have in my current apartment) with drawers and hanging space – with enough hangers! – in addition to open shelving, which I used for easy access to the items I reached for the most: jewellery, bags, and a sarong for the pool.

As for the linens, they were all from Frette , including the bathrobe, which now has the distinction of being the most comfortable robe I’ve ever used and made me realize how scratchy other robes turn out to be.

The colour scheme was, like the rest of the superyacht, refined and understated – soft greys, whites, with a pop of colour from the teal couch.

I relished using the Diptyque products in the bathroom during every shower. However, I did have to hunt for the waste bin, which turned out not to be a separate receptacle but a drawer that was part of the vanity and took some getting used to.

Tell us about the crew.

They were attentive and engaged but not overbearing and often knew what I wanted before I did (thinking of the iced oat milk latte I was offered one morning on the pool deck – it was just what I needed). We were told some of the crew had come from other Ritz properties, and I could tell a few were still getting their sea legs but were well on their way to adapting to the ship.

My suite ambassador, Horacio, was a particular standout. He always anticipated what I’d need for the coming day – an extra bottle of Moët early on, then a fresh bottle of sparkling water later. He also ensured my welcome-night dress was freshly pressed for dinner and the following party, which I was especially grateful for, as there was no iron in the suite (there are two in the guest launderette, though).

What food and drink options are available on board?

You’ll never want for a drink or snack on Ilma . There are five restaurants, all with distinctive types of cuisine – Tides, Memorī, Beach House, Mistral, and the pièce de resistance: Seta su Ilma . Headed up by Michelin-starred chef Fabio Trabocchi, Seta is the only restaurant on board that requires an additional fee to dine there. I’d recommend making a reservation as soon as you embark.

I experienced Seta (and it truly is an experience ) on my last night on the superyacht; it was quite the send-off. Dinner is an 11-course tasting menu with a wine pairing for every course, so everyone told me to eat light the day of, and I’m glad I did, especially since my favourite course (Wagyu beef calabrese) came last before dessert. Seta was the most intimate of the restaurants, with around 40 seats, and all of the tables had staggered seating times. Our (chatty) table was one of the later seats, and we closed the restaurant.

And when you’re more parched than peckish, there are six bars aboard, most adjacent to their respective restaurants. My favourite was the Marina Bar, in the aft of the ship. Two of the walls transform out into open-air decks with glass panelling beneath you, so you can get a glimpse of the water below while you sip your cocktail of choice (mine was naturally a piña colada).

Image may contain Architecture Building Furniture Indoors Living Room Room Table Couch Home Decor and Lounge

Is there a spa on board, and is it worth visiting?

Yes and yes – treatments available include the usual suspects, like massages and facials, and salon services for both men and women. The Barber – an extension of the Pisterzi brand, which has locations in New York and Milan – and The Salon are the go-to spots for haircuts, shaves, manicures, and all grooming needs in between. (I heard nothing but rave reviews about The Barber from the men aboard – I heard some variation of “best shave of my life” every time.) There’s also a steam room and sauna (one of each for men and women), which you can enjoy even without another treatment booked.

I’m always carrying around a tight back, so I was delighted to be treated to a deep muscle massage and finally feel my shoulders fall below my ears. Before my treatment, my massage therapist asked the usual questions – any injuries, which spots needed the most work, etc. – but then she applied two different oils and asked which I liked better. The one I chose meant my body needed relaxing, naturally. During the treatment, there was a bowl of rose petals on the floor below my head, which I found to be a nice touch. The massage itself was just the amount of pressure I like – a lot – without verging into too much . Afterwards, the steam room and sauna were offered to me, but I was eager to heat up by the pool instead.

What about activities and entertainment?

You won’t find a theatre or auditorium onboard Ilma, and that’s because life is best lived on the decks, so I found – catching sun by one of the two pools or taking advantage of the adult playground that is the “aquabana” – a floating lounge space off the aft of the ship where you can swim in the sea, kayak, paddleboard, or relax with your feet in the water under one of the cabanas. These are common on private yachts, and in keeping with giving passengers a taste of the yachting lifestyle, Ilma acquired the largest one made yet (so I’m told).

There was plenty of live music throughout the voyage: a DJ by the pool deck or a live band in the Living Room – Ilma ’s central lounge space with a coffee bar and rotating gelato flavours by day and a busy cocktail bar by night.

When you’ve had enough sun (hard to imagine, I know), there’s not only a gym but spinning and movement studios, all expanded on Ilma , due to their popularity on Evrima . I had the best intention of spending one morning testing a treadmill, but whenever I walked by, it seemed like the other guests had it under control.

Instead, I power-walked the decks, taking in all the art – you can find an original Hockney, Warhol, and Picasso onboard – and window-shopping at the Bvlgari boutique.

How was the experience for families?

Surprisingly welcoming! I did not expect to see so many families on board, but there was dedicated programming for children through Ritz Kids , as well as several children simply enjoying the amenities alongside the rest of us: dancing, swimming, and sipping juices.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

We sailed from Barcelona to Saint-Tropez , where we anchored overnight before disembarking in Monte Carlo. The overnight port call in Saint-Tropez gave us plenty of time for both planned excursions, which ranged from winery tours to a pastry-making class and taking the tender into town for your own exploring.

For my excursion, I took a tour of nearby Port Grimaud, a planned community built in the ‘60s with a network of canals meant to mimic  Venice , followed by a seafood tasting at a local restaurant before grabbing a digestif along the harbour back in Saint-Tropez with some of my fellow tour mates. I appreciated how much time we were given on our tour to wander – we had portions of planned activities, like a boat tour through the aforementioned canals, but plenty of time for our discovery.

Are there any stand-out sustainability or green initiatives related to this cruise?

Ilma is the first build in the collection to have a specialised gas system installed, which makes it flexible for current – and future – sustainable fuels, like bio- or synthetic fuels, and the next member of the fleet, Luminara (launching in 2025), will have the same.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

A voyage on Ilma is worth booking to experience the luxury of the yachting lifestyle wherever, whenever – with the full service of a hotel.

HISTORIC AMERICA’S CUP 12-METRES LIGHT UP THE PUIG VELA CLÀSSICA

image1

For fans of the America’s Cup and the competition’s rich history, this week in Barcelona has been a feast for the eyes. The Puig Vela Clàssica regatta, run by the outstanding Real Club Náutico Barcelona, has brought some of the world’s finest classic yachts together alongside a magnificent fleet of 12 Metre Class yachts that competed in the America’s Cup from 1958 through to 1987.

yacht crew barcelona

For many, the 12 Metre Class era was iconic, especially with the Cup changing hands after 132 years of total dominance by the New York Yacht Club when Australia II defeated Liberty in 1983. The class survived one more America’s Cup, down in the big winds and waves of Fremantle, Perth in 1987, and that regatta remains ingrained in many Cup watchers' memories as a stand-out spectacle.

yacht crew barcelona

Several of the boats from that 1987 regatta competed in Barcelona, including the revered Kookaburra II, French Kiss, Crusader, South Australia and Kiwi Magic who duked it out for the honours in Division A of the Puig Vela Clàssica. Furthermore, in Division D, there were some super-classic 12 Metres, with the likes of Northern Light, Vim and Jenetta enjoying incredibly close racing and rolling back the years to a bygone era.

yacht crew barcelona

An interesting aside in the modern 12 Metres is the number of original crew that came back to compete here in Barcelona, still racing at the highest level. Onboard French Kiss, the Phillipe Briand-designed French Challenger that underwent radical stern-surgery during the 1987 regatta but has thankfully been restored to its original flowing lines, the legendary Olympic silver medallist skipper Marc Pajot was on the wheel for the regatta.

yacht crew barcelona

Speaking about what it means to be back, Pajot commented: “It’s a very nice memory for me. I was an Olympic sailor, switched to ocean sailing competing around the world, and finally ended up in the America’s Cup with French Kiss in Fremantle in 1987. Five of those crew members are now competing in Barcelona – 37 years later! It’s an excellent regatta with a very large fleet, and this year, a unique opportunity to enjoy the America’s Cup in Barcelona.”

yacht crew barcelona

For Torben Grael, one of the world’s top sailors and a tactician for the Italian Luna Rossa campaigns in the 2000, 2003 and 2007 America’s Cups, the chance to sail Kookaburra II, the current 12 Metre World Champion owned by Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team Principal Patrizio Bertelli, is all consuming:

“In the recent World Championship (Porquerolles, France), we debuted a reconfiguration of the boat because when it was purchased, it still had the setup from Fremantle 1987. Our program is Mediterranean and sometimes in Newport, where the wind is much lighter. We have changed the keel and other things, and we are getting to know the boat. The 12 Metres are beautiful boats, requiring a good and trained crew for manoeuvres. The races are very close and beautiful.”

yacht crew barcelona

As the regatta concluded, it was the beautiful ‘Kookaburra II’ that secured the win scoring just seven points, to close out the series ahead of Johan Blanch’s ‘Kiwi Magic’, whilst Marc Pajot’s ‘French Kiss’ completed the podium in third overall.

yacht crew barcelona

In the vintage 12 Metre fleet - grouped in Division D - Hans Eliasson’s ‘Northern Light’ won the final race and secured the title with just six points, whilst James Patrick’s Vim confirm their second place, with Thomas Muller’s ‘Jenetta’ completing the podium.

yacht crew barcelona

The Real Club Náutico Barcelona brought down the curtain on the XVII Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona Regatta, the XVII (27 th ) running of this international event that is part of the official RFEV calendar and counts towards the II International CIM Championship (International Mediterranean Committee), as well as the XIII Mare Nostrum Trophy – Spanish Cup of Classic Boats.

The awards ceremony was held in the presence of Marc Puig, Executive Chairman of Puig, Jordi Puig, President of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, Josep Mª Isern, President of the Catalan Sailing Federation, Xavier Torres, Vice President of the Spanish Sailing Federation, Javier Moreno, Naval Commander of Barcelona, Leonardo García de Vicentis, President of AEBEC, Andrés de León, Vice President of CIM, and Pablo Garriga, Commodore of RCNB.

A glittering end to a fabulous regatta with the perfect venue and hosts for an extraordinary festival of sailing.
