Silent Yachts

Occasion – Record historique

Solarwave 64: Here Comes the Sun

  • By Michael Verdon
  • Updated: January 4, 2017

Solarwave Yachts, Solarwave 64

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64, launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

“In October, we cruised 60 miles at 6 knots on just solar,” says Stefan Merker, co-founder of the Zurich-based company. “At the same time, we charged the dinghy’s electric outboard, produced hundreds of liters of water, cooked meals and heated the boat — all with little sunshine.”

The builders decided on a cruising-catamaran design for weight savings and minimal wetted surface, plus more roof area for the solar panels. Solarwave also offers the boat in a “power” version with twin diesels rated up to 600 hp.

“The onboard diesels serve as a power redundancy, and for faster speeds at night or under severe weather conditions,” Merker says. “But we haven’t used our generator for weeks. There was no need.”

The Solarwave 46, the first cruising catamaran that runs exclusively on solar energy

In 2010, the Solarwave-Yachts shipyard launched the Solarwave 46 a protorype, for a 5-year test, carried out at sea and on rivers. A next model, the Solarwave 62, should be launched in the coming weeks.

Chloé Torterat

There are many solar and electric boats all over the world. But Solarwave 46 is the first deep-sea cruise ship that uses exclusively solar energy for the propulsion and operation of all household appliances (induction hob, cooker, microwave, grill, freezer and refrigerator, air conditioning, washing machine, watermaker ). Even the motor tyre and electric motorcycle are charged by the sun.

To verify this unique concept of independent energy supply, Solaryacht was tested for 5 years, starting in January 2010. The boat has crossed all European rivers, sailed on the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea . During this period, 6 to 8 people have been accommodated in full board with water, heating and air conditioning. In all, the catamaran has covered 12,000 nautical miles, with no gas emissions, no fuel use, no noise and no vibrations.

In addition to the accommodation, Solarwave was able to power the engines every day and in all conditions, from a force 9 storm to a calm sea, with sun, rain, cloudy skies, snow and ice falls, using only solar energy .

In 5 years, there has been no need for maintenance or servicing and the on-board generator - mandatory for safety reasons - has been used for only 50 hours, and above all to prevent it from rusting. Over the same period, the electric motors have operated for 2500 hours without any particular maintenance .

The Solarwave 46 was able to prove the feasibility and suitability of the "Solarwave" system for daily use. The system was also awarded the "Energy Globe Award".

A new model, the Solarwave 62, will be launched soon

Following the success of the Solarwave 46, the yard has been working on a new solar catamaran , the Solarwave 62, which should be launched in the coming weeks. The launch has been postponed because additional features have been added, the electric motors have gained power and other details have been added. They will be unveiled when the boat is launched.

Several possible configurations

Solarwave catamarans are available in 52, 62 and 72 feet and in two versions: Standard and Semi-Custom.

The first one has 4 large VIP cabins with owner's suite and separate shower. The owner's version creates a large owner's space - cabin and bathroom - in the starboard hull. 2 VIP cabins, a suite with separate shower and a crew cabin complete the layout.

solawave yacht

In the semi-custom version, the materials (wood and fabrics) are installed on request. The layout can be adapted to the owners' needs: 5 to 6 cabins, a galley in one of the hulls or a 30m2 saloon.

Three possible propulsions

The 3 configurations "Solarwave-Cruiser", "Solarwave-Power" and "Solarwave-Sailor" are identical in terms of hull, deck and interior. It is the propulsion that differs from one model to another.

The Solarwave Cruiser is a pure solar yacht. Independent of the wind, it is easy to maintain, fast and silent with high energy efficiency. In the cruiser version, the boat is not equipped with diesel engines or sails, it moves forward only thanks to the solar energy , stored in the batteries, which allows a maximum speed of 10 knots.

The Solarwave Power is a "parallel hybrid" which has two powerful diesel engines, but also two electric motors. They can propel the boat alone or together. It allows a large range at low speed with the "e-drive" or higher speeds with the diesel engines.

The Solarwave Sailor offers an additional option with a set of sails compatible with the hybrid engines of the "Cruiser" series or the diesel engines of the "Power" series.

6 Glamour Editors Try the New Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand

In the quest to get snatched , at-home skin care devices have skyrocketed in popularity. What was once a pricey trip to the esthetician for a smoother, more radiant, and lifted face can now be achieved in the comfort of your own home. At least, that’s what the Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand promises. A favorite of makeup artists and celebs alike , the Solawave wand recently underwent a makeover to revamp some key settings and features.

The result is a new and improved Solawave wand (it's normally $169, but it's down to $110 for Amazon Prime Day ), featuring “4-in-1” red light therapy, galvanic current, facial massage, and therapeutic warmth. After the popularity of the first model, Solawave listened to customer feedback and incorporated a few changes into the latest device.

The new Solawave has an on-and-off button (instead of touch-activation in the previous model) and 180-degree head rotation to reach every curve and crevice on your face. The LED lights are upgraded from five to seven powerful red lights to promote radiant skin and reduce the look of wrinkles and blemishes. Solawave also swapped out microcurrent for galvanic current, a safe and noninvasive form of energy that can help boost product absorption. Lastly, the new model comes with a travel case, to keep your device protected and hygienic on the go.

Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand

Saks Fifth Avenue

Using the Solawave wand is simple. Start with clean skin, then apply serum. The brand sells its own serum for the device , but any of the best face serums works, as long as it helps the wand glide easily across your face. Gently tilt and drag the device head upwards and outwards across your face for three minutes per area of the skin. You can use the device on any part of your face, including the forehead, brows, cheeks, upper lip, undereyes, and chin.

When it comes to results, Solawave cautions that patience is key. As with most skin care devices, you will have to play the long game and be diligent. According to the brand, most users see results within the first few weeks, including smoother skin, diminished undereye circles, and an overall glowing complexion. After consistent use, most users will see a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines.

So how does the new Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand hold up? Glamour decided to put it to the test. We asked six editors with different skin types, textures, and tones to try the device for three weeks. Ahead, read our honest reviews and see before-and-after photos.

Ariana Yaptangco, senior beauty editor

Solawave Wand Review 6 Editors Try the New Device With Before After Photos

How often did you use the Solawave wand?

Pretty much every day in the morning. Of course, there were some days I wouldn’t have time or simply forgot, but for the most part, I used it daily.

Was the Solawave wand easy to use?

I have to admit, I don»t really have the patience to read directions, so I pretty much skimmed through the manual and hit the ground running. The device is very user-friendly—I was able to figure out how to turn it on and off, along with maneuvering the rotating head. It has a useful timer that measures out three minutes and an auto turn-off function that signals the end of treatment. I would pick it up while watching Netflix on the couch.  Did you notice an immediate or gradual difference in your skin?

I notice an immediate difference in puffiness and lift after using the Solawave wand. In the morning, it really helps drain my face of any fluid buildup from overnight. I even used it before my sister’s wedding, where the bridal party was shocked at the difference between the two sides of my face. They could see how much slimmer and lifted my cheek looked after using it on one side.

Would you recommend this device to a friend?

Definitely! I’ve already influenced my sister and cousin to buy their own Solawave wands. The price point is very reasonable for a skin care device. Plus, it’s user-friendly, so even if you have zero knowledge of beauty and skin care, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.

Talia Abbas, senior commerce editor

Solawave Wand Review 6 Editors Try the New Device With Before After Photos

Once to twice a week for a month. I was being super conservative with it—the device says you can use it three times a week for 12 minutes total—because my mom recently developed some kind of skin sensitivity and light irritation from a different red-light-therapy device so I was worried my skin might have a similar reaction.

These Fall Haircut Trends Will Be Everywhere in 2024

I was intimidated at first so I studied the instructions like it was my SATs; it actually turned out to be pretty intuitive to use. The Solawave looks like a pen with a rotating head, which can turn clock or counterclockwise (and diagonal or horizontally) depending on the area you're trying to target. I mostly focused on my cheeks, undereye, and forehead, slowly moving the device in outward motions for a total of five minutes—and after moisturizing. The red light is super bright so I also tried not looking at it directly when it was powered on. And since I didn’t have the Solawave Activating Serum in my arsenal, I’d cleanse my skin and then apply my regular cream before going in with the Solawave. I also skipped my neck area because of the cautionary disclaimer to avoid the thyroid (which low-key freaked me out because I didn’t trust myself to do it properly). Did you notice an immediate or gradual difference in your skin?

I was being more conservative than the brand recommended and  I was testing the Solawave while my skin was hormonal and acting up, so I’d like to think, maybe? But I probably need more time and consistent use to see any actual difference.

I would! I feel like it’s accessibly priced for the technology and easy enough to use for a total newbie like myself.

Monique Wilson, editorial assistant

Solawave Wand Review 6 Editors Try the New Device With Before After Photos

I’ve used it three times.

Yes, very easy. I leave it on my nightstand to use either day or night. It’s easy to charge and use because the directions are very simple. I also like that you can rotate the head to reach different parts of your face.

Did you notice an immediate or gradual difference in your skin?

I noticed a slight difference when I used it on one side versus the other. The side I used felt a little bit tighter, but for the most part, I didn’t see or feel a big difference.

I would recommend it to friends who have prominent fine lines or heavy dark circles. It’s easy to use so it wouldn’t hurt to try it out.

Solawave Wand Review 6 Editors Try the New Device With Before After Photos

How often did you use the Solawave wand?

I used the Solawave every single day for three weeks. There was a one-week period of neglect, but I got back on the wagon and used it daily for another two weeks and continue to use it now.

Was the Solawave wand easy to use?

The Solawave was very easy to use. There’s a slight learning curve in terms of the amount of pressure—especially if you’re used to a  gua sha  or something like the  Jillian Dempsey  tool. You may want to get in there and sculpt, but you’re really just supposed to glide it over your face.

Something that’s intended to help with the slip is the Solawave Renew Complex serum, but I used my own products instead. I’m pretty strict about my current skin care routine and I didn’t want to introduce a new formula while testing this out. Instead, I washed my face, sprayed the  Avéne face mist , and followed up with either  Dr. Jart’s toner  or  Osea’s hyaluronic acid serum . After using the Solawave, I’d respritz with my mist, then top everything off with  Dieux’s Instant Angel  and a  Tatcha sunscreen .

I’d use slow, sweeping motions as displayed in the instructions. I had to keep the little booklet on hand for the first week before I got the routine and the no-nos down. (There are a lot of no-nos.) I’d start at the corner of my lips, and move the wand outwards toward my hairline, moving sequentially up my cheeks to the undereye area. I’d move on to my forehead and focus a bit more on the elevens (those furrowed brow lines). I was in the midst of testing my thyroid levels with my doctor, so I avoided my neck area entirely. I’d use it for five minutes each day.

After using, I’d wipe it with a tissue. This is likely just a me thing, but I found it so. difficult. to properly get the wand into its case. I ended up just setting it on my counter or in my drawer after use (not an ideal way to treat something that’s over $150).

Did you notice an immediate or gradual difference in your skin?

The Solawave combines four treatments into one—it couldn’t possibly excel at each one, right? In my opinion, right. Every day that I used it, there was an immediate sculpted look to my face. But from what I can tell, it’s a temporary result of some lymphatic drainage and a bit of microcurrent-like tightening. I get a similar result when using a gua sha or cooled  Nurse Jamie  roller, but I can’t deny that the Solawave may be more  instantly  firming than anything else I’ve tried. After about a week of use, my partner mentioned that my face “looked more chiseled”— his words! And unprovoked, might I add!

In terms of improvements caused by LED, that was gradual and minimal at best. The biggest draw to using red light is the antiaging benefit, but I didn’t notice any reduction in wrinkles and fine lines, or signs of collagen being rebuilt. I did happen to have a reduction in acne. (Not that I expected to; I’m used to a more powerful panel when it comes to red-light therapy.)

I always break out around my period, and this trial ran through two moon cycles. Not a single cystic acne bump was found, nor did I have as many whiteheads around my chin and hairline. Maybe my hormones were being nice to me, or maybe it was the magic of the wand; either way, avoiding post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation means everything to me.

It depends on why you want it. The Solawave is billed for its LED benefits, but if that’s your goal, I’d steer you toward a larger and more powerful panel. If you have the coins for a mask from Dr. Dennis Gross , for instance, or even better: a visit to a dermatology clinic for some serious LED therapy results.

I do like it as a depuffing tool and face massager, however, and that’s coming from a full-on morning marshmallow. (My Nurse Jamie roller doesn’t gently warm up or vibrate, that’s for sure.) If it were cheaper and the marketing focused more on the sculpting benefits than the LED light therapy, I’d sooner recommend it.

Solawave Wand Review 6 Editors Try the New Device With Before After Photos

I used it every day. Some days I did it in the morning instead of the evening. And I’ll be honest; after about two weeks, I skipped a day here and there, but not often.

I found the directions a little hard to understand, and frustrating. The speed with which the light moves across the skin will make a difference, and I didn’t think the documentation was very helpful. It gave directions for the pattern to use on four areas of very different sizes; cheeks were together in one, forehead was another, then the neck and the undereyes. Then in a later paragraph said to spend 3 minutes per area. But the undereye is so much smaller than both cheeks; it wasn’t comfortable to have the light on that skin for that long.

The only videos on their site were TikToks, so I wasn’t sure how reliable they were. I ended up just slowly moving the device in the pattern they suggested.

I wasn’t in love with the serum in combination with the device. I applied a couple of dots to one area at a time, but before I was halfway through using the wand, the serum had begun to dry and was sticky; the device head would drag instead of glide. To get the serum to reconstitute, I’d pat my skin with damp fingers. After I was done, I tended to use a damp cloth to wipe my skin because the serum was kind of unpleasant. I experimented with using the device with other skin products, like a moisturizing cream, and those stayed moist and I could continue to glide.

The device buzzes to let you know three minutes have passed, but that was never in play. I had to stop to reconstitute the serum, and I couldn’t do my face in one session, so I just turned it off whenever I needed to pause.

Did you notice an immediate or gradual difference in your skin?

Gradual is the word here. I did feel that after about two weeks, I felt a small difference. Many of my wrinkles are “real” wrinkles, created by the movement of muscles under the skin; they weren’t going anywhere. But the surface wrinkles did seem to be smaller. My cleaning lady told me I was looking younger! But I’ve also had good results with simply using a moisturizer and exfoliator.

I’m not sure I would. You really need to keep it up, and spending 12 minutes a day with this was frankly boring. And the difference wasn’t quite huge enough for me. The one place I did like it, oddly enough, is on my neck. I’m not sure the photos show it, and maybe I’m making it up, but my neck seemed a tad firmer. Since my neck is the first place to show off my recent weight loss, I’m kind of vain about it.

Solawave Wand Review 6 Editors Try the New Device With Before After Photos

How often did you use the Solawave? I used the Solawave every night after cleansing for two weeks, then gradually tapered down to three times a week.

Was the Solawave easy to use? The Solawave is super user-friendly. To use it, I start with clean skin, so I use it just after double cleansing. Then I apply Solawave Renew Complex Activating Serum (the conductive formula) all over my face, and glide the Solawave across my face and neck going upward and outward (toward the forehead and ears). While gliding, I primarily focused on my cheeks and T-zone, which are my problem areas, plus anywhere I was experiencing redness or breakouts.

My skin is…complicated and very high-maintenance. If I make the slightest shift in my routine, it turns red and blotchy, and breaks out—often in one or two very noticeable cystic pimples. But when I started using the Solawave, I noticed an immediate difference. There was an instant depuffing effect, plus gradual improvements in terms of hyperpigmentation, skin tone, and skin clarity. It even helped one of my cystic pimples clear up much faster than usual. (If you’re familiar with cystic acne, you know it’s pretty much impossible to clear up or speed up the process with OTC drying solutions.) The Solawave actually made a huge difference in how my cystic acne has behaved since I started using it, though! Even after my having traveled pretty much nonstop for the past month and a half, every time I use it, it relieves my facial inflammation, evens out my skin tone, and soothes my inflamed complexion, helping my once-incurable cysts to actually shrink and fade away quicker—all without scarring. I will never travel without it again.

Would you recommend this device to a friend?

I’ve recommended the Solawave to tons of my friends and plan to suggest it to more because I love it so much. It’s so easy, and makes a huge difference. I definitely want to get one for my mom too.

Microcurrents , LED lights , cryotherapy — when it comes to skin tech that's now attainable at home, the limit does not exist. There are so many options to choose from, but one device that's currently on the lips (err, skin) of every TikTok beauty creator is the Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand.

For context, the hashtag #solawavewand has over 3.4 million views on the app and is flooded with thousands of skin-care enthusiasts across the globe shouting its acne-clearing, sag-reducing powers from their phones. So, what's all the hubbub over this slender tool? Well, it supposedly combines the powers of soothing heat, contour-defining galvanic current technology, and acne-targeting LED lights to improve your complexion — all for under $200 price.

As a highly discerning skin-care skeptic, I put Solawave's most popular product to the test, and though this tool’s tech specs aren’t the most impressive on the market, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Radiant Renewal Wand lives up to some of its hype.

In this story:

The facts behind led light and galvanic currents for skin, how i tested it, before and after, pros and cons, pricing and value, where to buy it, overview: the solawave radiant renewal wand.

This device seemed to become the biggest thing in skin care overnight, but why? I’d venture that one big reason is that it’s combining four different buzzy skin-care technologies in one sleek package. As stated earlier, this pocket-size tool utilizes LED light therapy, galvanic current ( not microcurrent), low-level vibrations, and soothing warmth to tackle dullness, fine lines, puffiness, and acne.

Solawave's Radiant Renewal Wand is an upgraded version of its original wand . The brand decided to rethink its already-popular device after it received feedback from consumers asking to make the device more user-friendly. The Solawave wand 2.0 now has an on/off button (it was previously powered on by rotating its head), two additional LED lights for improved efficacy, 180-degree head rotation, and magnetic charging.

But what really makes this Radiant Renewal Wand stand out from its predecessor is the inclusion of galvanic current technology. According to New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD of MDCS Dermatology , this is an alternative to microcurrent that “facilitates the penetration of skin care ingredients in the skin.” We'll get deeper into this technology in just a second.

The blue and purple graident-patterned Solawave Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand facial device on a white background

Solawave Radiant Renewal Skincare Wand

Chances are, of all of Solawave’s features, you're probably most familiar with LED light therapy. But, in case you need a refresher on its benefits, Erum Ilyas, MD , a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, has you covered. "Red LED light has been studied with medical-grade devices for use on the skin because it actually has the ability to penetrate the skin deeply. It is believed to work by activating signaling pathways between cells," she says. "There are studies evaluating and showing red LED benefits when used as a medical-grade device — but not at-home products — for acne, wound healing, hair regrowth, and diminishing signs of aging."

So, here’s the thing: The Solawave wand is not a medical-grade device. In fact, it only features seven red LED light bulbs. For comparison’s sake, the $455 Dr. Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite FaceWear Pro full-face mask has over 100. “It is difficult to quantify the results one can expect from a 7-bulb device, however, it may help,” says Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, FAAD , a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist. “The most important is to be consistent with usage to reap benefits, if any.”

As mentioned before, this device also uses galvanic current technology. Like the microcurrent technology harnessed by devices such as NuFace , galvanic current technology utilizes low-voltage electrotherapy for skin-care benefits. But that’s pretty much where the similarities end. Dr. Murphy-Rose explains that microcurrent technology utilizes a “low-level alternating electrical current” to temporarily sculpt and lift your face’s natural contours, whereas galvanic currents use a direct electrical current to increase skin permeability and deliver skin-care products deeper into the skin. “Both microcurrent and galvanic current may promote healing,” she adds. Research published in a 2008 edition of Naturopathic Physical Medicine also reports that galvanic current assists with lymphatic drainage and easing inflammation.

As for the Solawave’s massaging vibrations and gentle heat, Dr. Camp says these settings can also improve product absorption and calm inflammation: “The heat setting on the device may encourage improved penetration of ingredients in serums applied to the skin during use of the Solawave device, and the massage setting may help reduce swelling by encouraging lymphatic drainage.”

“May” and “might” are words that cropped up often in my conversations with experts about the Solawave wand. That’s because Solawave has not done a clinical trial to back up the claims about its Radiant Renewal Wand. According to a representative for the brand, its team is currently finalizing the results of a consumer perception study. (In a consumer perception study , testers use a product or device and then share their feedback. There is no clinical observation or objective assessment of the results, like measuring reduction in acne or wrinkles.) In a consumer perception study on the earlier iteration of the Solawave, 60 people between the ages of 25 to 60 years old tried the 4-in-1 Advanced Skincare Wand for one month, with half the group testing the facial tool along with the brand’s Renew Complex Activating Serum . Of those testing solely the wand, 100% agreed that consistent use for one month led to softer, more supple skin. The majority of wand-only testers reported a glowier, radiant complexion, more even tone, and a decrease in the appearance of fine lines.

Allure commerce writer Jennifer Hussein using the Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand.

I'll be honest: I haven't spent much time with the Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand, but so far I've been loving it. I've been using the wand every other morning for approximately two weeks. My first day using the device was more or less seamless, considering that the instructions are pretty simple. After letting it charge for two hours before turning it on for the first time, you just apply a serum (for a friction-free glide), turn it on, and gently run the device in sweeping motions across a section of your face. Its three-minute timer will alert you to move to the next area. It's worth noting that you Solawave recommends paring this wand with an oil-free serum or moisturizer with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera in order to get the best results from the wand. (My elixir of choice has been the First Aid Beauty Bounce-Boosting Serum ).

Each Zodiac Sign's Unique Personality Traits

For a more visual step-by-step tutorial, you can watch the brand's instructional video here .

One Solawave session can be as brief as three minutes, if you’re only focusing on one area, like your jawline. The brand recommends at least three sessions a week to start seeing results within two weeks. Since I'm targeting multiple areas of my face and hoping to expedite my results, I use the device every other day at Solwave's max recommendation of 30 minutes per day (that’s three minutes per section, which the brand does not recommend starting with but… I went for it). On each section I target, including my cheeks, undereyes, forehead, and neck, I utilize Solawave's detailed usage instructions , which are broken down below:

  • Cheeks : Start on the area of the cheek closest to the lips and glide outward up the cheek.
  • Undereyes: Start on the inner corner below the eye and gently glide outward to the outer corner of the eye.
  • Forehead: Start at the base of the forehead and glide the Wand upward across the forehead. Avoid contact with the eyelids.
  • Neck: Start on the inner sides of the neck and glide outward and up, avoiding the larynx and throat area.

I've just started noticing a clearer, more radiant complexion. Usually, I have a few blackheads and a little post-acne hyperpigmentation on my hairline, the perimeter of my face, and on my nose. But those pesky spots have noticeably toned down (pun intended).

While the sculpting results are minimal so far, I have been noticing a subtle lift to my jowls. However, the most noticeable and instant effect has been on my eyes — they look way less puffy than usual. Both Dr. Camp and Dr. Murphy-Rose attribute this to the lymphatic draining effects of Solawave’s heat and vibrations. Usually, I have swollen, red eyes from the moment I wake up until I go to bed, but this tool has become my tried-and-true trick for reducing morning puffiness.

In my experience, the heat and massage of the Solawave can have impressive depuffing effects. And if they’re helping my favorite serum penetrate deeper, that’s a lovely bonus. This device is also just a pleasure to use. It’s sleek and compact and feels great in your hand. I found it made me look forward to my evening skin-care routine — and take a little time with it — in a way that I didn’t before. And while the price isn’t low, the wand costs significantly less than many of the other skin-care devices on the market.

Though I have personally seen benefits from using this device, all three dermatologists question this tiny device's overall efficacy in a three-minute treatment. And the brand hasn’t done any clinical trials to back up its claims. "It is difficult to say if the red LED light aspect could achieve any measurable results simply because even medical-grade devices require much more time than a three-minute session," says Dr. Ilyas. "As a product that is relatively cheaper than the rest, I think it is reasonable to try but difficult to say how effective it is in the long run."

It's also worth noting that if you use this device in 30-minute sessions like I do, the battery life is pretty short. The run time is about an hour, so I've gotten only two uses per charge. Considering that it takes two hours to charge the battery and that I chronically neglect all of my devices the moment they die, this was a speed bump in my testing.

Solawave's famous LED light therapy wand costs $169, which is a fraction of the price of higher-quality, versatile skin-care tools like the NuFace Trinity+ microcurrent device (which currently costs $395) or the Allure Readers' Choice Award-winning TheraFace Pro facial massager (another tool just under $400). Yes, Solawave's device is more affordable, and I did see results after consistent use, but this device can’t replicate the contour-lifting effects of NuFace’s device or the more intensive attachments (including a larger LED light head) of the TheraFace Pro.

Want to try the Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand's contour-enhancing powers for yourself? This nifty skin-care device is $169 at ulta.com , nordstrom.com , and solawave.com .

I review products for a living, and I’ll admit the Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand sat in my drawer for months.

It's been raved by staffers and used on celebrities like Reese Witherspoon and Pedro Pascal , but once a PEOPLE senior editor gushed about how it minimized her dark spots in our monthly beauty roundup , I pulled it out, watched a YouTube tutorial on how to use the skincare stick , and finally gave the Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand a try.

In less than two weeks — yes, two weeks — my skin looked brighter and the dark spots along my cheekbones started fading away. My mom noticed the difference immediately, and soon enough, she, too, had a Solawave Wand in her hand.

And right now, it's 40 percent off when you apply code  PRIME40  at checkout.

4-in-1 Red Light Therapy Skincare Wand and Activating Serum Kit

Colors: Rose gold, ombre, and matte black | Perks: Free U.S. shipping and returns

This iteration of the Solawave Wand offers four benefits — red light therapy, galvanic current, warmth, and a gentle facial massage — which is why it is called the 4-in-1 Red Light Therapy Skincare Wand. In reality, the red light therapy is the star of the show, and the rest of the features feel like a warm, vibrating side effect.

Vocab Lesson

Galvanic current: an electrical current that firms the skin, increases circulation, and aids in the absorption of your serum, according to the brand

Solawave’s (new and improved) Activating Serum is also included in the kit. It’s meant to be used in conjunction with the wand to help smooth, hydrate, and plump as you glide the wand across your face.

How to Use the Solawave Wand

It can be intimidating to try a new beauty product, especially one that states it emits a “galvanic current.” Solawave has a helpful how-to video , and I also read other reviews to make sure I used it correctly. In the end, it was actually very simple.

  • “Divide” your face into four sections: cheeks, forehead, undereyes, and neck.
  • Apply serum to each section. (Solawave’s included serum is great, but we saw results using any quality serum.)
  • Power on the wand and rotate the head to your preferred angle.
  • Slowly drag the wand across your face and neck in an upward motion. The wand should gently touch your skin — no need to apply pressure.
  • Wait for the wand to pause before moving on to another section of your face.
  • When you’re finished, wipe off the wand’s head and store it in the included case until your next use.
  • Continue your skincare routine as usual with your daily moisturizer, makeup, etc.

For best results, the brand recommends using it for three minutes on each area for a total of 12 minutes a day. (However, I usually use it somewhere between five and 10 minutes in the morning — depending on how late I’m running — and I still see results.)

To avoid rotating the wand head multiple times, I do the entire left side of my face and then the entire right side.

People / Joy Kim

How We Tested the Solawave Wand

To test the 4-in-1 Solawave Skincare Wand, my mom and I followed the instructions in the included manual. For the first few days, we used the wand for five minutes a day to get our skin acclimated to the red light. Then we worked our way up to 12 minutes a day, three times a week.

Now, I look forward to my Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Solawave mornings. (I always time it right before my first meeting of the day so I look extra fresh.)

If you’re too impatient to wait for the pauses while using the wand, you can also count the number of times you swipe the tool across the area. I usually do 12 to 15 swipes and then move on to the next section.

I wish I had Solawave before and after photos, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see such a difference.

The Solawave site promises results in two to four weeks, but my skin looked noticeably better in less than two weeks, and when I use the wand now, the results are immediate.

I started using the 4-in-1 wand in January because I moved to Hawai’i and wanted to reduce the appearance of my dark spots before I developed more permanent sun damage. A quality sunscreen and my Solawave Wand helped fade my previous dark spots and prevent new ones from forming.

I’m not kidding when I say I fully attribute my youthful-looking skin to good hydration, SPF, and Solawave. (I was recently asked on a date by someone a decade younger than me, so I’d say this skincare tool is erasing more than a few years off my face.)

My mom has only been using the wand for a few weeks, but she’s already seen a reduction in the dark spots around her cheekbones. More importantly, she says she loves using this wand because it makes her feel good knowing that she's doing something positive for herself.

Plus, if you try the skincare wand and don’t see results within 60 days, the brand will offer you a full refund.

Just Launched

Solawave just released a Neck and Chest Rejuvenating Mask that we can’t wait to try. It’s also 40% off during the sitewide sale.

Is the Solawave 4-in-1 Red Light Therapy Skincare Wand Worth It?

Is the Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand worth it? Absolutely . I wish I could shout it from the rooftops, but instead, I shared my love for this tool with my mom (and anyone reading this, of course).

Even at its full price of $198, it’s worth every penny, but when it's on sale, it’s a must-have skin device. Can you think of a better gift for yourself or a mom than glowing, radiant skin? This tiny tool can help brighten up a tired new mom’s undereye circles and eliminate older, wiser moms’ wrinkles. Not a mom? Me neither, but I also get undereye circles and wrinkles! However, thanks to this tiny skincare wand, that’s a secret my mom and I will keep to ourselves.

If you've ever found yourself waking up in a hotel room with a puffy face post-travel day, or even if you just love the convenience of skincare devices that don't take up the entirety of your vanity cabinet, I've got some news you don't want to miss. Solawave, the brand loved by celebs like Pedro Pascal and Meghann Fahy for the red light wand that transformed one PureWow editor's skin , just released a mini, travel-sized device. And having personally tested it out, I can confirm you're gonna want to add it to your beauty routine ASAP.

The palm-sized Radiant Renewal 2-in-1 Skincare Mini device ($89) integrates red light therapy, near-infrared light and therapeutic warmth to reduce inflammation, tackle signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, increase your skin's radiance and decrease inflammation (but more on all that in a second) on both the face and body. The point is, this small device seriously packs a punch, and it comes in at just under $90, meaning you won't have to break the bank to grab one for yourself. Below, find all the need-to-knows about the Skincare Mini, plus my own thoughts after trying it.

solawave 2 in 1 skincare mini red light therapeutic warmth facial device

What Are the Benefits of Red Light Therapy, Near-Infrared Light and Therapeutic Warmth?

  • Red Light Therapy: Per Cleveland Clinic , red light therapy, which is a treatment that uses low levels of red light on your skin, has shown promise in ongoing research for treating wrinkles, redness, acne, scars and signs of aging.
  • Near-Infrared Light: Rupa Health shares that when infrared light is used on the skin, it kicks cells into high gear and promotes tissue healing, inflammation reduction and pain relief.
  • Therapeutic Warmth: Otherwise known as heat therapy, applying warmth to the skin can aid in increasing blood flow and circulation through the skin by relaxing the muscles and dilating blood vessels, per the brand. This also then allows oxygen and nutrients to flow more freely to help with tissue regrowth and lymphatic drainage.

How to Use the Solawave Skincare Mini

Unlike the OG Radiant Renewal wand (was $198, now $132), the Solawave Skincare Mini can be used on both your face  and body since it doesn't include galvanic current(though the brand recommends a patch test on a small area of skin like your wrist, first), and should be used on clean, dry skin. You can use the device with or without the Skin Therapy Activating serum (was $29, now $20), which is sold separately, and you simply hold down the power button to get it started. Then, glide the device in circular motions for three minutes on one focal area before moving onto another. Your total treatment should take no longer than 12 minutes, after which the device will automatically shut off. The brand recommends cleaning after each treatment with an alcohol- or water-based wipe.

It's also important to note that this device should not be used by anyone that is currently pregnant, as it hasn't been tested for pregnancy safety, and shouldn't be used by anyone under the age of 18, subject to seizures or photosensitivity, that has skin cancer or with a known allergy to aluminum, silicone or plastic.

solawave 2 in 1 skincare mini review before and after

All My Thoughts on the Travel-Sized Device

When I first unpacked the Skincare Mini, I first noticed just how compact it is—truly the perfect travel size. I was also happy to see detailed instructions were included, so I wasn't nervous to jump in and try it out.

Let's get right into a few things I loved about the mini device. First, it heats up quickly to a low warmth, so there's no waiting around for it to be ready to use—you can just turn it on and get going. Plus, it's designed with a PopSocket -like handle, making it really easy to angle on your face without dropping it. And as someone who tends to be super impatient with my skincare (you won't ever find me spending hours applying different products or using time-consuming devices), I also loved that I could just toss on an audiobook and it felt like the 12 minute treatment was over in a flash. As for the results, though it's a little hard to see in the photos above, I definitely noticed my face was less puffy and looked a bit brighter overall immediately after using it.

Now, on to what I didn't love. The biggest thing here is that, though, the Skincare Mini is designed for the light to blink when it's time to move onto a new focal area, I found that when I used it on my face, I wasn't able to see the blinking. So for my first session, I ended up using it way too long on the first side before switching. This is easily remedied by just watching the clock while you're using the device on your face (it's easy to notice on other areas of your body like your arm), but definitely something to note. Also, the light can be pretty bright when it gets closer to your eyes, such as when targeting the cheekbones or lower forehead, so keep that in mind, especially if you have sensitive eyes.

See the Solawave in Action

Want to see for yourself how the Skincare Mini works? Kate Kesselman , host of PureWow's Take My Money series on YouTube, tried it out, too, and you can hear all her thoughts in the video above.

The Bottom Line

Overall, I think this device is totally worth it's less than $90 price tag—especially if you're someone (like me) who tends to end up with a puffy face post-travel or early in the mornings and want to have a quick fix on hand that doesn't take up a ton of your time or space. Considering the celebrity following of the brand, I have a feeling this new release could sell out quickly, so you might want to jump on it sooner than later.

What’s the Difference Between Solawave and NuFace?

Portrait of Tembe Denton-Hurst

In the world of skin-care devices , the Solawave and NuFace are among the most popular. It’s rare that I go a few days without seeing someone talk about the way one of them changed their skin for the better, whether I’m scrolling on skin-care TikTok or reading the Strategist. And while they’re both popular and can address similar skin concerns, ultimately, they work very differently.

So how does the NuFace work?

NuFace’s big draw is its ability to carve out facial features seemingly in an instant. A quick perusal of testimonials will show impressive transformations — jaws are sculpted, brows are lifted, cheekbones toned. There’s a few reasons for this. First, the way you use NuFace is very similar to the way you’d do a manual lymphatic-drainage massage, which helps with any fluid retention in the face. This helps to make your face look more toned and sculpted. But NuFace, unlike a gua sha or your hands, also uses microcurrent, a low-level electrical current that stimulates muscles and skin cells. When the NuFace makes contact with your skin, a gentle current is delivered beneath the skin with the help of a conductive gel and stimulates the cell’s energy output, or ATP. This helps your skin to produce more collagen, which helps skin to look smoother over time. The electrical current also causes muscles to contract, which acts like a workout for your facial muscles. With consistent use, microcurrent helps to build up the facial muscles in your skin, giving your face a more sculpted look. But it also offers a temporary, immediate lift. Beauty writer Erica Metzger told us she found the cheekbone-lifting effect to be “immediate” and it lasted for about two days.

And what about the Solawave?

Solawave is a convergence of skin-care trends in a single device. It’s an all-in-one, offering a mix of red-light therapy and facial massage in a portable stick. The main draw, though, is the red-light technology. Red light, a form of LED therapy , travels deep into the skin and stimulates collagen while reducing inflammation. It’s especially popular for acne and hyperpigmentation and can help to improve skin over time. There are two types of Solawave wands — the Radiant Renewal wand and the four-in-one Advanced Skincare Wand. The four-in-one Advanced Skincare Wand combines red-light therapy and microcurrent to address issues like hyperpigmentation and acne while also offering the lifting and toning benefits of microcurrent. Because it’s a smaller device, it won’t be as effective for full-face sculpting, but it can be helpful for smaller areas that the NuFace can’t get to, like the brow or lip. The Radiant Renewal wand is slightly pricier, has two additional LEDs, and uses galvanic current instead of microcurrent. Writer Diksha Basu is a fan and says the device is incredibly easy to use and that her face “glows” and her  eyes  “look much less tired than they feel.” Galvanic current, also known as direct current, uses low-frequency, consistent electrical stimulation, which allows your skin-care products to penetrate deeper into the skin. This technology paired with red-light therapy can be very effective for enhancing your skin-care routine, making your products even more effective at their job.

Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand

Which one is better for wrinkles and sculpting?

It depends on what you want to achieve. If the goal is to define your jawline or reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, then a microcurrent device like the NuFace is going to be your best bet. The experience of using a NuFace is similar to using a gua sha, except you let it hover over your skin for a bit longer to let the microcurrent do its thing. Choosing a device also depends on how much time you’re willing to spend on achieving results. While a single NuFace session will make you a bit more lifted and toned, the most significant results will only be achieved as a result of using it consistently at least a few times a week.

Which one is better for acne and hyperpigmentation?

If you want to address issues like hyperpigmentation or acne, then the Solawave is a better option. The red light helps to stimulate collagen production and reduce inflammation, which is ideal for helping with breakouts and discoloration. As far as which Solawave to use, that also depends on what you need. The Radiant Renewal wand is good if you’d like your skin care to work more effectively, while the Advanced Skincare Wand could be the best option if you want to target smaller areas the NuFace can’t effectively reach, like the eyelids or upper lip area.

Can they be used together?

Definitely, and depending on your skin goals, both can be useful. Samantha Mims, an esthetician at Brooklyn Face and Eye , uses them together, alternating depending on what she’s trying to achieve. For softly defining her facial features, she reaches for the NuFace, which she says delivers pretty instant results. “It’s great if you’re wanting to look a little bit more lifted and supported,” she says. She prefers the Solawave for smaller, more targeted areas like around the eye or brow, and for addressing skin concerns like hyperpigmentation and acne. “The built in red-light therapy helps with scarring and getting products deeper into the skin.”

As someone who has always been interested in skincare, I am constantly on the lookout for new products and treatments that can help me achieve a healthy, radiant complexion. Recently, I came across SolaWave , a device that promises to improve the appearance of skin using red and blue light therapy. Intrigued by the claims, I decided to give it a try.

After using the SolaWave device for a few weeks, I was amazed by the results. Not only did my skin look brighter and more even, but I also noticed a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

I was particularly impressed by the before and after photos that I found online, which showed just how dramatic the results could be. What is Solawave?

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

As I was researching the SolaWave , I discovered that it is a handheld skin care device that uses red light therapy, microcurrents, ultrasonic waves, and heat therapy to improve the appearance of your skin. The device is about the size of a Sharpie marker and can be used at home or on the go.

The Solawave has received support from trusted esthetician Shamara Bondaroff for its ingenuity. According to her, the device can improve your skin’s look and feel in as little as two weeks.

One of the key features of the SolaWave is its red light therapy. This treatment uses low-level wavelengths of visible red LEDs to help with the appearance of blemishes and fine lines, and minimize breakouts. The device also uses microcurrents to stimulate your facial muscles and help tone and firm your skin.

In addition to these treatments, the Solawave also uses ultrasonic waves to help your skin better absorb the accompanying Renew Complex Serum. This serum contains aloe vera, which works well with the microcurrents to give your face muscles some love.

Overall, the SolaWave is a versatile device that combines multiple treatments into one. It can be a great addition to your skincare routine if you’re looking to improve the appearance of your skin in a convenient and effective way.

The Benefits of Solawave

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

As someone who has been using the SolaWave Wand for a few months now, I can confidently say that it has been a game-changer for my skin. Here are some of the benefits I’ve experienced:

Improved Skin Texture

One of the most noticeable benefits of using the Solawave Wand is that it has improved the texture of my skin. The microcurrents and red light therapy work together to stimulate the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is responsible for providing energy to cells. This increase in energy helps to promote cell turnover, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin.

Reduced Appearance of Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Another benefit of using the SolaWave Wand is that it has reduced the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on my face. The microcurrents work to stimulate the muscles beneath the skin, which can help to lift and tone the face. Additionally, the red light therapy helps to increase collagen production, which is essential for maintaining the elasticity of the skin.

Increased Collagen Production

Collagen is a protein that is essential for maintaining the elasticity and firmness of the skin. As we age, the production of collagen decreases, which can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. The Solawave Wand helps to increase collagen production through the use of red light therapy. The LED lights stimulate the production of collagen, which can help to improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Overall, the SolaWave Wand has been a great addition to my skincare routine. It has helped to improve the texture of my skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and increase collagen production. If you’re looking for a non-invasive way to improve the appearance of your skin, I highly recommend giving the Solawave Wand a try.

Before and After Solawave

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

Before Solawave: Skin Concerns

Before using SolaWave , I had some concerns about my skin. I had some fine lines around my eyes, and my skin looked dull and tired. I also had some redness and uneven texture, especially on my cheeks. I tried different skincare products, but nothing seemed to make a significant difference.

After Solawave: Visible Improvements

After using Solawave for a few weeks, I noticed visible improvements in my skin. Here are some of the changes I observed:

  • My skin looked brighter and more even-toned.
  • The fine lines around my eyes appeared less noticeable.
  • My skin felt firmer and smoother.
  • The redness and uneven texture on my cheeks improved.

I used SolaWave three times a week, as recommended, and also used the SolaWave Renew Complex Serum. I followed the instructions carefully, making sure to move the wand in circular motions and not to apply too much pressure. Each session lasted about five minutes, and I found it easy to fit into my skincare routine.

Overall, I am happy with the results I achieved with Solawave. While my skin is not perfect, it looks and feels better than it did before. I plan to continue using Solawave as part of my skincare routine to maintain these improvements.

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

How Does Solawave Work?

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

I was curious about how the SolaWave wand works, so I did some research. According to the manufacturer, the wand uses four different technologies to improve the appearance of the skin: microcurrents, red light therapy, warmth, and massaging.

Microcurrents are low-voltage shocks that penetrate the muscles beneath the skin. They work the muscles in a way that can help your skin look younger. The wand uses microcurrents to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Red light therapy uses LEDs to bring your skin back to life. The red light penetrates the skin and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can also help reduce inflammation and improve the appearance of blemishes and acne scars.

The warmth function of the wand increases blood flow and opens up your pores, which can help your skin to regenerate healthier, glowier skin over damaged tissue. The massaging function of the wand helps to increase circulation and lymphatic drainage, which can help reduce puffiness and dark circles under the eyes.

Overall, the SolaWave wand uses a combination of technologies to improve the appearance of the skin. While individual results may vary, many people have reported seeing improvements in their skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance after using the wand.

Solawave Treatment and Results

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

As someone who has tried the SolaWave wand for 30 days, I can confidently say that the device lives up to its claims. However, it’s important to understand what to expect during treatment, the results, and follow-up treatments.

What to Expect During Treatment

Using the Solawave wand is simple and straightforward. After cleansing and drying your face, apply your own face serum or Solawave’s Renew Complex Activating serum, which is specially formulated to boost the results of the wand. Then, glide the wand over your face in circular motions for two minutes.

The wand uses four science-backed technologies to deliver results: Red Light Therapy, Microcurrents, Sonic Vibrations, and Thermal Heat Therapy. The red light therapy uses low-level wavelengths of visible red LEDs that help with the appearance of blemishes and fine lines, and minimize breakouts. The microcurrents stimulate the facial muscles, while the sonic vibrations help to increase circulation and lymphatic drainage. Finally, the thermal heat therapy helps to open up pores and allow for deeper absorption of products.

During the treatment, you may feel a slight warming sensation on your skin, but it should not be uncomfortable or painful. The entire treatment should only take a few minutes, making it easy to incorporate into your daily skincare routine.

According to a study, 97% of participants noted their skin looked and felt more hydrated after two weeks of consistent SolaWave usage. 93% of participants said their skin looked more lively after the same amount of time. Additionally, 86% of the study’s participants reported that the device helped reduce the appearance of fine lines, while 86% also saw a reduction in the visibility of pores.

Personally, I noticed a significant improvement in the texture and appearance of my skin after using the wand for 30 days. My skin felt smoother, more hydrated, and looked brighter overall. I also noticed a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes and mouth.

Follow-Up Treatments

To maintain the results, it’s recommended to use the SolaWave wand 2-3 times per week. However, the frequency of use may vary depending on your skin’s needs. It’s important to continue using the device consistently to see long-term results.

In conclusion, the Solawave wand is a powerful tool that can help improve the texture and appearance of your skin. With consistent use, you can expect to see significant improvements in hydration, fine lines, and pore size.

Solawave Before and After: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Results

After using the SolaWave wand for several weeks, I have noticed a significant improvement in my skin’s texture and overall appearance. The wand’s combination of red light therapy, galvanic current, massage, and warmth has helped to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots.

One of the things I appreciate most about the Solawave wand is how easy it is to use. It only takes a few minutes each day to use, and I can easily incorporate it into my skincare routine. Additionally, the wand comes with an activating serum that helps to enhance its effectiveness.

Another benefit of the SolaWave wand is that it helps to improve the absorption of serums and moisturizers. I have noticed that my skin feels more hydrated and supple after using the wand, and my skincare products seem to work better.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Solawave wand to anyone looking for an effective and convenient way to improve their skin’s appearance. While it may be a bit pricey, I believe the results are worth the investment.

Investigation found that Clarence Thomas took free yacht, helicopter trips in Russia: Democrats

A Senate Judiciary Committee investigation found that conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose at least 35 luxury gifts, including a free yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter to a palace in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin's hometown, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Ron Wyden, D-Or., said  in a letter  to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The letter raised the "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars," mostly from billionaire real estate developer Harlan Crow, who Thomas once described as being among his "dearest friends." Buried in appendix list on page 14 are the references to the Russia trips, which took place in 2003. Other gifts from Crow include "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” the letter reads.

After a bombshell ProPublica report last year that revealed the extent of Thomas' financial ties with Crow and attempts to hide it, Thomas admitted to taking three trips on a private plane owned by Crow, but did not disclose any of the other gifts.

The senators are asking Garland to launch a special counsel investigation into Thomas, with the evidence collected so far "plainly suggest[ing] that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have complied with their federal tax obligations."

In a separate move on Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and a group of fellow progressives filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for failing to disclose "millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court."

Luxury yachts and other myths: How Republican lawmakers echo Russian propaganda

A woman examines the rubble of a destroyed building

Two senior Republican lawmakers, the chairs of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees, say their colleagues are echoing Russian state propaganda against Ukraine.

Researchers who study disinformation say Reps. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and Michael McCaul, R-Texas, are merely acknowledging what has been clear for some time: Russian propaganda aimed at undermining U.S. and European support for Ukraine has steadily seeped into America’s political conversation over the past decade, taking on a life of its own.

McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News he thinks “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”

Turner, chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that anti-Ukraine messages from Russia are “being uttered on the House floor.”

Reps. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Mike Turner, R-Ohio, leave a House Republican Conference candidate forum

For the past decade, since Russia’s first military incursion into Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has spread propaganda and disinformation in a bid to undercut U.S. and European military support for Ukraine, according to U.S. and Western officials.

Some of the arguments, distortions and falsehoods spread by Russia have taken root, mostly among right-wing pro-Trump outlets and Republican politicians, researchers say, including that Ukraine’s government is too corrupt to benefit from Western aid and that the Biden family has alleged corrupt ties to Ukraine.

Russia, in keeping with traditional propaganda techniques, seeks to make its case and tarnish Ukraine through a mixture of outright falsehoods, half-truths, inferences or simply amplifying and promoting arguments already being made by American or European commentators and politicians, researchers say.

The propaganda is sometimes spread covertly, through fake online accounts, or openly by Russian officials and state media. As a result, the origin of some allegations or criticisms is often opaque, especially when a certain accusation or perception has gained wide acceptance, leaving no clear fingerprints.

Early in the war, a false story boosted by Russian propaganda — that the U.S. had helped Ukraine build biological weapons labs — gained traction on right-wing social media and was touted by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Russia also is conducting a parallel propaganda campaign in Europe. Belgium’s prime minister said Thursday that his government is investigating alleged Russian bribes to members of the European Parliament as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine support for Ukraine. Czech law enforcement officials last month alleged that a former pro-Russian member of Ukraine’s parliament, Viktor Medvedchuk, was behind a Prague-based Russian propaganda network designed to promote opposition to aiding Ukraine.

Here are some examples of Republican lawmakers using arguments often promoted by Russian propaganda:

Buying yachts

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress behind closed doors in December to appeal for more U.S. help for his country’s troops, some lawmakers raised questions about Ukraine allegedly buying yachts with American aid money.

Zelenskyy made clear that was not the case, according to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. “I think the notion of corruption came up because some have said we can’t do it, because people will buy yachts with the money,” Tillis told CNN. “[Zelenskyy] disabused people of those notions.”

Where did the yacht rumor come from?

Pro-Russian actors and websites promoted a narrative alleging Zelenskyy bought two superyachts with U.S. aid dollars. One Russia-based propaganda site, DC Weekly , published a story last November that included photos of two luxury yachts, called Lucky Me and My Legacy , which it alleged were bought for $75 million.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine, in November retweeted a post about the alleged yacht purchase from the Strategic Culture Foundation, a Russian-based propaganda outlet directed by Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Treasury Department. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the organization, accusing it of spreading disinformation and interfering in U.S. elections.

Another outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also made a similar claim.

In a December interview with former President Donald Trump’s White House adviser Steve Bannon, Vance claimed that members of Congress wanted to cut Social Security benefits to provide more aid to Ukraine, and that money would allegedly be used for Zelenskyy’s ministers to “buy a bigger yacht.”

“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelenskyy’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?” Vance said. “Kiss my ass, Steve. It’s not happening.”

Donald Trump looks as J.D. Vance speaks.

The tale of Zelenskyy’s luxury yacht, however, turned out to be totally false . The yachts cited in the DC Weekly article remain up for sale , the owners told The Associated Press.

Two academics at Clemson University, disinformation researchers Darren Linvill and Patrick Warren, found that DC Weekly ran numerous stories copied from other sites that were rewritten by artificial intelligence engines. The articles had bylines with fake names along with headshots copied from other online sites. DC Weekly appeared to be a Russian effort to launder false information through a seemingly legitimate news site as part of an attempt to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, according to the researchers .

Asked by reporters about Vance’s comments, Tillis said: “I think it’s bullshit. ...If you’re talking about giving money to Ukrainian ministers — total and unmitigated bullshit.”

Greene’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Vance’s spokesperson said the senator was making a rhetorical point about how he opposed sending U.S. assistance to what he sees as a corrupt country, but was not asserting the yacht stories online were accurate.

Vance’s office referred NBC News to an earlier response to the BBC on the same topic:

“For years, everyone in the West recognized that Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somehow everyone forgot that just as we started sending them billions of dollars in foreign aid.”

Enabling ‘corruption’

Russian state media for years has painted Ukraine as deeply corrupt, and has argued that the U.S. and its allies are wasting money and military hardware by assisting such an allegedly corrupt government.

“This is absolutely a line that they have pushed, and then once it appears in the Western ecosystem, other [Russian] media picks it up and it gets recycled back,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

This line of argument has gained traction partly because Ukraine does face a genuine corruption problem.

Russia’s effort to focus attention on corruption in Ukraine reflects a long-established propaganda method of using facts or partial truths to anchor a broader assertion or accusation, sometimes making a leap in logic, Schafer and other researchers said. Russia’s message amounts to: Ukraine is corrupt, therefore U.S. and Western aid will be stolen and wasted.

Schafer said it was ironic for Russia, a country mired in corruption and kleptocracy, to be leveling accusations about corruption.

Republican Rep. Mary Miller has said she strongly opposes more assistance for Ukraine because it amounts to sending cash to “corrupt oligarchs.”

“With Zelensky coming to DC this week to ask for more money, I will continue to vote AGAINST sending your tax $$ to corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine for a proxy war that could have ended in ‘22,” Miller wrote in a post on X in December.

The Illinois lawmaker also echoed another assertion that often appears in Russian media, that the Biden administration allegedly undermined efforts by Russia to avoid war with Ukraine.

“A peace deal was on the table that [Ukraine] and [Russia] were both ready to sign, but Biden said NO,” she wrote.

There was in fact no proposed peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine were prepared to sign before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to U.S. and European officials. As Russian troops massed on the border of Ukraine, Western governments urged Russia not to invade and warned there would be economic and diplomatic consequences.

Reuters has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a possible deal to avert a war that had been discussed with Kyiv by Russia’s envoy to Ukraine. The Kremlin said the report was inaccurate and has said Russia tried for years to arrive at an understanding with Ukraine.

As for corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy has vowed to tackle the problem, sacking senior officials in some recent cases. But some civil society groups have criticized his approach and Ukrainians say corruption is the country’s second-most serious problem, after the Russian invasion, according to a poll conducted last year.

In an annual survey, Transparency International said Ukraine made progress toward addressing the issue and now ranks 104th out of 180 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index , climbing 12 places up from its previous ranking.

Ukraine is not alone among countries that receive U.S. and other foreign aid but struggle with corruption. Supporters of assisting Ukraine argue it would undermine America’s influence in the world and its humanitarian efforts if Washington withheld foreign aid from every country where there were reports of corruption.

The Biden family and Ukraine

Republicans have repeatedly alleged that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter have corrupt ties to Ukraine, and that they sought $5 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma to protect the firm from an investigation by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

There is no credible evidence for the allegations. A key source for the accusations against the Bidens is a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested in February on federal charges of fabricating the bribery claims. Smirnov says he was fed information by Russian intelligence.

Republicans had heavily promoted Smirnov’s allegations against the Bidens, seeing them as crucial to a planned impeachment effort against the president that has since fizzled .

“In my estimation, that is probably the clearest example of Russian propaganda working its way into the American political system,” said Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona cited the false bribery allegations in expressing his opposition to providing assistance to Ukraine.

“In exchange for … bribe money from Ukraine, Joe Biden has dished out over $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund the war in Ukraine. I will not assist this corruption by sending more money to the authoritarian Ukrainian regime,” Gosar said in a statement in October.

Gosar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
