The Migaloo M5 Submersible Superyacht under water

As impressive as all that may read, we’re only scratching the surface. Migaloo is billing the M5 as the world’s first luxury submersible superyacht. The Graz-based firm promises it will go all out to deliver the sort of amenities its ultra-ultra-rich clientele expect. It intends to work with customers to design the interior of their dreams, but they can expect an opulent dining room with room for 36 guests and panoramic glass walls, a curated wine cellar, and a technologically advanced cinema. There will also be two swimming pools, a jacuzzi and—because this is a superyacht we’re talking about—a helipad.

When the M5 is surfaced, there is also a healthy stable of water toys for the owner and their guests to enjoy. These include five Sea-Doo Jet-Skis, Seabobs, Zapata Racing flyboards and hoverboards, and everything else you need for paddleboarding, kitesurfing, and kayaking. There are also two custom Midget-Submarines, two submersibles, and several ROVs and UUVs. There’s little risk of getting bored onboard the M5.

Move over jet skis: The new onboard gadgets the ultra-rich seek for their superyachts are submersibles.

  • The world's super rich have increasingly sought out superyachts in recent years.
  • One way the ultra-wealthy are now accessorizing their luxury ships is with a submersible.
  • These vessels can cost at least a few million dollars each.

Insider Today

Joyrides on jetskis while sailing the high seas on your giant yacht are so last year.

Now, the world's .01% are seeking submersible vessels to accessorize their latest superyacht purchase, The Washington Post reports.

In 2021, sales of superyachts —yachts at least 120 feet long — reached record levels during the COVID-19 pandemic, Insider previously reported.

And these luxury vessels have only become larger, along with the demand, as the number of billionaires has grown in the past few years.

"You have a mega-yacht, a super yacht — a submersible has become the next thing to have," Ofer Ketter, co-founder of SubMerge , which facilitates private submersible expeditions, told The New York Times.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was recently spotted sailing the Mediterranean Sea in his $500 million megayacht Koru, which is 417 feet long.

There are several other expenses the uber-wealthy may want to consider with the purchase price of a superyacht, which, according to the Post, can cost at least $10 million.

There's gas, maintenance, storage, insurance, and, of course, staff to take care of guests on board.

But they may also want to include a submarine to explore the deep seas with their friends.

"Yacht owners are, by and large, people who have an interest in the ocean," Patrick Lahey, founder of Triton Submersibles , previously told Insider. "They like to go places and experience new things, and there's nothing quite like seeing the ocean from the perspective of a submersible."

This interest from the ultrawealthy was highlighted earlier this year after the OceanGate submersible imploded in June, instantly killing all five passengers. The company offered seats to visit the sunken Titanic ship in its vessel, Titan, for $250,000 per passenger .

The disaster may have sparked more interest in extreme adventures from the wealthy, Phillippe Brown, founder of Brown and Hudson travel company, previously told Insider.

At Triton Submersibles, a vessel can cost between $2.5 million and $7 million, Insider reported.

Similarly, SEAmagine, another submersible company that began in 1995, sells vessels that accommodate 2 to 7 people and cost the same amount as Triton's submersibles.

One of the company's models, the Aurora-80, can reach depths of up to 3,300 feet.

Ian Sheard, a principal engineer at SEAmagine, told the Post the vessels aren't actually parked inside the yacht but instead rely on what he calls "the toy hauler," which is just a "shadow ship" that follows the superyacht and carries all the goods that can't fit on the main ship.

"Even after a thousand dives, it never stops being exciting," Charles Kohnen, co-founder of SEAmagine, told the Times.

Nautilus: U-Boat Worx releases new renderings of 37.5m superyacht-submarine crossover

Dutch submersible specialist U-Boat Worx has released fresh renderings of a 37.5-metre underwater superyacht concept called Nautilus. First presented during the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, the design has been developed in collaboration with German-Turkish yacht and aviation design studio Officina Armare.

Capable of functioning as both an on-water vessel as well as a submersible, Nautilus has a depth rating of 150 metres. The diesel-electric model has a surface cruise speed of nine knots and an underwater speed of four knots and it will able to stay underwater for up to four days at a time. At cruise speed, the underwater endurance is six hours and range is 3,200 nautical miles.

When not in use, Nautilus can be docked at any quay that can accommodate its 6.5-metre draught.

When functioning as a yacht, Nautilus has a range of relaxation and recreational features including a sizeable sundeck equipped with a freshwater pool, a bar, and a dining table where guests can enjoy meals. When the submersible is lowered below the sea’s surface, this al fresco arrangement can be retracted.

The interior of the submersible yacht includes a 50 square metre dinner and lounge area called the Mezzanine Observation Lounge, which benefits from a set of four-metre circular windows. The proposed design for Nautilus includes a master cabin and four additional cabins, as well as sleeping quarters for up to six crew.

Elsewhere, Nautilus is home to a pressure-resistant electrical tender, which is stowed under the aft deck. This tender, called Aronnax, may also be used for transporting five scuba divers underwater to the intended dive spot.

“People that have decided to buy a yacht will now have to consider if their vessel of choice can also dive down to 150 meters,” said U-Boat Worx chairman and founder Bert Houtman. He pointed to numerous advantages of Nautilus, including its efficacy when it comes to combatting seasickness. “If the sea becomes too rough,” said Houtman. “You simply dive and continue your voyage in comfort. With the Nautilus, the yachting market will never be the same again.”

He added that the company's vision was to allow people to explore the ocean in the safest, most comfortable and luxurious way. "Nautilus is the realisation of this vision," he said.
