A General Description of Sailing Yacht ADIX

This sailing yacht ADIX is a 65 m 213 (foot) important steel ship which was crafted by Astilleros De Mallorca and conceived by Arthur Holgate and Dijkstra & Partners. An important triple masted schooner ADIX is a very distinctive Spanish built superyacht which was launched to completion in 1984. Accommodating 10 passengers and 14 crew members, sailing yacht ADIX is ex Jessica; Schooner XXXX as her shipyard project name. She is a traditional triple masted schooner. Completed for 1984 her reasonably traditional interior design confirms the traditional approach in the designing of John Munford/Alan Boswell.

ADIX is a three-masted schooner built in 1984 originally named 'Jessica'. In the mid to late 1980's she was bought by Alan Bond who used her as a promotional tool and consequently named the yacht after his beer, 'XXXX'. In 1991 she underwent a complete refit at the Pendennis shipyard including a transom modification and full interior refurbishment and has since paid subsequent visits to the yard in 2001 and 2008. The 370-tonne three-masted schooner is the largest yacht to date to be lifted out by the company’s 400-tonne travel hoist which is the largest leisure yacht hoist in the UK.

The Shipyard Work & Design for Luxury Yacht ADIX

Arthur Holgate was the naval architect firm involved in the professional vessel design work for ADIX. Her interior design was completed by John Munford/Alan Boswell. Arthur Holgate and Dijkstra & Partners is also associated with the yacht general design work for this yacht. Spain is the country that Astilleros De Mallorca completed their new build sailing yacht in. After the official launch in 1984 in Palma De Mallorca, she was afterwards released to the proud new owner having completed sea trials. The core hull was crafted from steel. The sailing yacht main superstructure is made for the most part using steelandteak. The total length of the luxury yacht on deck is 56 (183.7 ft). With a width of 8.66 metres / 28.4 feet ADIX has spacious size. A deep draught of 4.82m (15.8ft) limits the amount of marinas she can visit, contingent on their specific depth at low tide. She had refit improvement and alteration work undertaken by 2008.

S/Y ADIX Engineering Figures & Range & Speed:

Fitted with a single MAN diesel engines, ADIX can reach a top speed of 12 knots. Her propulsion units are a single screw propeller. Her total HP is 540 HP and her total Kilowatts are 485. For bow thrusters she was built with Hps.

Accommodation Provided by Superyacht ADIX:

The substantial luxury yacht sailing yacht ADIX is able to sleep as many as 10 guests in addition to 14 crew members.

adix yacht interior

Built by Astilleros de Mallorca in 1984 to an Arthur Holgate design, with a length of almost 65m, Adix remains one of the largest sailing yachts built since the 1930s. The yacht was originally brought to the yard in 1991 to undergo a complete programme of refit and repair, including a transom modification, 6m extension and full interior strip out. She has since paid subsequent visits to our yard in 2001, 2008, 2014, and 2022. During her 2009 visit Adix underwent scratch and gloss paint work, Lloyd’s and MCA surveys with a major engineering overhaul on her generators and main engines and cosmetic work on her external deckhouses. At the time the 370 tonne three masted schooner was the largest yacht to be lifted out by Pendennis’ 400 tonne travel hoist. Adix returned to Falmouth in April 2014 to compete in the fourth edition of the Pendennis Cup following which she was hauled out to begin a comprehensive 8-month refit programme. The Schooner underwent engineering works which included the installation of new generators and main engine, the yacht’s weight was assessed and the ballast was reconfigured to improve her weight by over 18 tonnes. Paintworks were completed in situ whilst she was based in one of our 90m construction halls. The Pendennis team redesigned the yacht’s deck house, which was moved further forward and combined with a seating area to provide better interaction with the Owner’s accommodation. After enjoying the summer cruising period Adix returned for final topside works including new lighter carbon and titanium rigging to complete her refit. After departing Falmouth, Adix continued to receive remote assistance from our Yacht Support team in locations around the globe, before returning for a short visit to the yard in 2022. She has recently departed to continue her adventures.

Let's Talk

Whether you are looking to build from scratch, restore a classic beauty or make improvements to your current yacht, it all starts with a vision, and a conversation. We're here to discuss your next project, whenever you're ready.

Built: 1984

A stunning ketch it has been a joy to do the rigging on this yacht having removed her aluminium rigs twice before, THLS worked with Southern Spars and Pendennis shipyards on her last refit updating her Aluminum rigs to Carbon fibre and her wire standing rigging to EC six carbon rigging. This involved a complex testing and R&D for the yachts unique rig tensioning systems. THLS also provided unique running rigging package to blend the classic yacht with modern materials.

The Schooner The Better – Adix refit 2014/5

adix yacht interior

A track north between the Cumbrae islands and the Scottish mainland and past the coastal town of Fairlie, synonymous with William Fife ’s famous shipyard, is like taking a noble trip down yachting history, but doing this on a 3-masted schooner going like the clappers with the lowers straining at their lashings provides another slant altogether. Adix arrived in emphatic style as she came to a halt off Largs Yacht Haven for the Fife Regatta in 2003, headsails dropped as she rounded up chased by the fluid descent of the Fore, Main and Mizzen in unison. She has seen many a transfixed stare since her ‘creation’ in 1989 and is currently in the midst of a monster refit that will make slight alterations to her deck layout, but more significantly will propel her into the modern era of carbon spars and carbon rigging with plenty of dyneema on board. The end result – Reduced weight and an increase in sail area.

Jessica

Originally built as Jessica for an eccentric Argentinian, she was a stumpier version of the sweet lines we see today and equipped with 2 yardarms on the foremast. She subsequently went on to spend a few years as Alan Bond’s marketing tool in the late 80’s for his Australian brewery ‘XXXX’ before she was bought by her current owner. An integral part of a successful Spanish banking family the new owner had keen visions and employed Captain Paul Goss to create what we now know as ‘Adix’.

Huge inspiration in her rebirth came from the mighty William Gardner designed 3-masted schooner, Atlantic , of 1903. It was two years after Atlantic’s launch in 1905 that she undertook a transatlantic race referred to as “The last Great race of Princes” with the legendary Charlie Barr as Captain. The resulting win set a record, sailing 3006 miles in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds with a 24-hour record of 341 miles maintaining an average speed of 14,1 knots! The record was to last until 1998 making it the longest standing speed record in yachting history. I guess you can see why you might like to take a leaf out of Gardner’s book!

atlantic_old

With Atlantic’s lines in mind Adix was lengthened with a new underwater configuration, longer spars and an interior makeover. In the early 90’s Adix became well known by the yachting fraternity, both modern and classic, as a beautiful one-off; Powerful and fast, yet elegant and graceful, and sailed with genuine respect to yachting’s heritage with particular attention to the art of seamanship.

In the latter part of 2014, Adix sailed across the Bay of Biscay to Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth for what is to be their third refit at this world-class facility. Having un-stepped the masts and removed the bowsprit the 56 metre (185’) hull was wheeled into the main shed for the winter work to begin. Goss’s long-term trust in the Naval Architect Gerard Dykstra, who was instrumental in transforming Jessica to her current shape, has brought the two together once again. Apart from general upgrades one of the major focuses is lightening her. Not surprising when you consider that due to modifications, regulations and improvements over the last 25 years Adix has increased in weight by a whopping 46 tons!

adix yacht interior

For the first change: a deck layout modification. The eye-catching teak sheathed steel deck-saloon has been cut away and is to be replaced by an aluminium equivalent, still teak sheathed, that will be 1 metre wider and positioned 1 metre further forward, making way for a sunk ‘cockpit’ nestled in between the aft end of the deck saloon and the Mizzen mast. In turn this will provide the owner with a superior area for comfortable cruising. Additionally, the topsides will display 4 new port holes on each side, partly for aesthetics but also for natural light down below and the obvious excitement that can be had whilst gazing out of them into the passing seas amidst bowling along at 15+ knots.

adix yacht interior

In lightening the yacht all factors having been taken into consideration and consequently attention has been focused to below the waterline. One of the most challenging jobs so far has been to remove 80 tons of lead ingots out of the keel taking 8 weeks of hard labour. It has since been melted down and poured back in reducing the lead ballast from 80 tons to 65 tons. Not only that, but the way that the new rudder has been constructed, using a duplex stainless steel shaft for the stock with stainless webs that splay out and are filled with foam, hidden by a carbon fibre cover, provides 300 KG of positive buoyancy!

But this is not the only weight saving. The rig is taking on a modern-age capacity that will thrust Adix into the 21 st Century and give her awesome capabilities.

All 3 masts are being replaced in carbon fibre, built by the leading mast-building outfit of New Zealand, Southern Spars. They will boast 4 metres increased length and are dressed with EC6 carbon rigging, favored by so many performance-related yachts including the 52 metre Alden /Dykstra schooner Meteor and at least 3 of the J-Class fleet. The rigging will be ‘jacketed’ with a polyester braiding material that will provide the appearance of wire from a distance. There will be no bottle-screws to tension the shrouds but anodized deadeyes in the deck and dyneema lashings tensioned by hydraulics.

Structurally new chainplates are currently being positioned up forward to cater for the new loads, and the spreaders on the foremast are going to be adjusted so that they are not swept back as much to improve her light air performance and her acceleration.

Adix wave

Although all of the booms and gaffs remain the same for now, some of them being already constructed with a carbon fibre strengthening ring, the overall weight saving will be around 70% making this newly, improved sailing machine a force to be reckoned with. In time it is likely that all spars will follow suit, but for now it will be about making the most from what there is, with the old lower sails remaining and larger sized topsails built to cater for the masts’ increased length.

All in all Adix will return as what we all recognise her as: An awe-inspiring schooner. Classic or Modern? Well, Yes, that’s a question! But honestly who cares. Having been constructed in 1984 Adix has used the minds and materials that have befallen her to develop into what is to many the ultimate choice. Classic looks, both inside and out, while using the most of present day materials and technology to give the best in sail performance. She is not pretending to be a classic, but those lines are priceless and I for one would love to be standing at the next Fife regatta to witness Adix powering into her anchorage exuberating finesse and carbon fibre prowess.

Sailing Superyacht Adix Begins Refit at The Yard Brisbane

The 64.85 metre sailing superyacht Adix has begun a four month refit and Lloyds survey period at The Yard Brisbane (TYB) in Australia.

The three masted schooner, which was built in Spain 1984 to an Arthur Holgate design, is currently cruising the South Pacific in the run up to the America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021.

While having a long-term refit relationship with the Pendennis yard in Cornwall, the Adix team selected TYB to undergo maintenance work while the yacht is based in the Southern Hemisphere.

Speaking about the yacht’s arrival at the yard, international development manager Mark Phelps said: “We recognise that while looking for facilities in the Southern hemisphere the Adix team would have been measuring every facility against their ‘home’ shipyard Pendennis, a highly respected Northern European yard. To be selected as their yard of choice supports our belief that we hold a place on the world refit stage.”

He added: “ Adix is a truly iconic yacht and we are delighted to have her visit us.”

Captain Paul Goss explained that TYB’s extensive facilities, which include two high clearance refit halls of 90 and 70 metres, were key in selecting the yard.

“ Adix occupies a lot of space when you lay the three rigs on the ground–the sum of Adix’s spars laid end to end is over 220-metres. The Yard Brisbane’s spacious facilities, particularly their refit sheds, were excellent in that respect,” he said.

It comes after Adix completed an eight-month refit at the Pendennis yard in July 2015. The extensive programme included a redesign of the deck house, addition of new portholes and engineering overhaul.

Adix’s first transformation took place in 1991, when the yacht underwent underwent a transom modification and full interior strip out, with design by Dykstra Naval Architects . This remodelling programme saw Adix named as ‘Best Refit’ in the ShowBoats Awards that year.
