A Beginner’s Guide to Sardinia: Alghero

If you’re looking for an Ibiza type holiday with nightclubs and crazy parties, you won’t find it in Sardinia.

However, if you’re looking for a complete life changing experience of history, culture, nature, beaches, and amazing food, then look no further – Sardinia has it all.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean. But it’s also a relatively well-kept secret when you compare it with its neighbour to the south east – Sicily.

If you don’t know a lot about it, maybe check the info page I’ve created here .

So, where is Sardinia? Well, let’s have a look at the map…

Now we’re on the same page, I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m not exactly a travel blogger per se. I am in love with the island of Sardinia though, and I’m really passionate about showing it off to everyone else!

I’ve lived here with my Sardinian wife since September 2017. Since then we’ve spent almost every free weekend taking roadtrips and excursions from north to south, east to west. So it’s fair to say that I do know a decent bit about what there is to see.

Sardinia is a big island, so to really do it justice I’m breaking it down into separate posts.

For my first chapter of ‘ Viva La Dolce Vita’s Beginners Guide to Sardinia ’, I’m starting with my favourite place on the island – my wife’s hometown, Alghero.

The Beginners Guide to Alghero

Where is alghero.

Alghero is a small port town in the north west of Sardinia.

The town, the fifth largest on the island, and home to approximately 44,000 people, can date its history back to the 12 th century. Originally, the extremely wealthy Doria family from Genoa founded Alghero as a fortified port town.

Two centuries later, the growing town was conquered by force by the Crown of Aragon – a kingdom of what is now modern Spain.

During the rule of Aragon the crown widely promoted colonisation. As a result, people from Catalonia heavily settled Alghero and the surrounding countryside.

The native Algherese dialect of Catalan, still spoken by some of the local population of Alghero, as well as the Catalan architecture of the historical town centre, are a testament to this colonisation.

Some people refer to the city as ‘Barceloneta’ – little Barcelona, owing to Alghero’s Catalan roots, and the sense of fraternity with the Catalan capital.

Do they speak English in Alghero?

In 2012 Alghero was the 10 th most visited place by tourists in Italy, so it’s fair to say they’re used to having international tourists around. With this in mind, you can find English, French, German and Spanish spoken here.

So, how do you get to Sardinia?

Well, more specifically, how do you get to Alghero?

The easiest way to get to Alghero is by flying into Alghero Fertilia Airport, but it can involve having to take connecting flights, depending on where you’re flying from. This airport is about 20 minutes outside the town, and there are taxi and bus links.

Alternatively, Cagliari Elmas Airport is the largest airport on the island and has direct flights to most European destinations – it is then a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Alghero on a dual carriageway.

There are also train connections from the airport to Sassari, which is 30 minutes from Alghero, please note though that the train from Cagliari can take 4 hours at the best of times!

You can also check Olbia airport, 140km from Alghero, in the heart of the famous ‘Costa Smeralda’ (Emerald Coast) – this area of Sardinia is the playground of the rich and famous – George Clooney spends a lot of his summers here!

If flying into Olbia Airport, just keep in mind that there are not many connections between the west coast and the east coast of Sardinia.

If you are thinking of staying for a week or two, I highly recommend renting a car, so that you can visit different areas of this beautiful island. You can find desks for all the usual international car rental companies at each of Sardinia’s airports.

Useful tips for accommodation

July and August are the busiest months for tourism in Alghero, and with that come higher prices for accommodation. If you want to avoid the Summer crowds, and still enjoy the warm sunshine, I recommend May, June, and September. Outside of the main tourist season, the cost of accommodation is relatively low.

If you’re travelling on a budget, I recommend using Airbnb to find self-catering apartments in the centre. There are many to choose from, and it can work out considerably cheaper than a hotel or traditional Bed and Breakfast in the town centre. Usually you can also look at the reviews and see what previous guests have said about the host and/or accommodation.

When making the booking, anywhere in Alghero itself should be fine as you’re generally only a 20-minute walk to anywhere else in the town.

If you prefer a more luxurious stay, www.booking.com is a great site for finding hotels in the surrounding area – just make sure that it’s close to the centre of Alghero if you don’t have a car.

Getting Around Alghero

Once you’re in Alghero it is really easy to get around by foot, the historical centre is relatively small, and there is a city beach about 15 minutes’ walk from the centre. To visit the beautiful countryside and beaches further out, I do recommend renting a car – public transportation isn’t exactly reliable.

The best beach spots outside the town, where you’ll find Caribbean-like turquoise blue water, and crisp white sand, are Le Bombarde, Il Lazzaretto and Maria Pia. For the surf lovers, don’t miss Porto Ferro. In a relatively small area around Alghero, you will find some of the best beaches in Sardinia.

Going a little further afield, one hour to the north to be specific, you’ll find the paradise that is Stintino – words don’t do justice to just how beautiful this area is!

Alghero Historical Centre

The historical centre of Alghero is characterised by narrow cobble-stoned streets, and Catalan architecture dating back hundreds of years. It’s great for a stroll, with one of the highlights being getting lost, and discovering something new around every corner.

You can find the historical area close to the port. It’s packed full of great bars and restaurants, and sunset on any of the sea-facing terraces is not to be missed.

Alternatively, there are also a few beautiful churches worth a visit such as San Francesco, San Michele and the Cathedral of Santa Maria. The two main public squares are Piazza Sulis and Piazza San Giovanni.

Capo Caccia and Porto Conte

If you manage to rent a car, definitely do not miss a visit to the promontory of Capo Caccia, and the beautiful Porto Conte Natural Reserve for spectacular views of the sea and surrounding countryside. This area, visible across the harbour to the west of the town, can be reached 30 minutes by car from Alghero.

Winter or Summer, these areas are perfect for a day out in the sun for a bit of hiking and exploring. Don’t forget your sunscreen, sports shoes and water!

Neptune’s Grotto

Neptune’s Grotto is an impressive stalactite cave in the Capo Caccia headland. Local fishermen discovered the cave in the 18th century, and it has since developed into a popular tourist attraction. The cave is accessible by sea or by foot – descending 656 steps called ‘Escala del Cabirol’. The steps have an amazing view, just don’t forget you’ll have to go back up too!

Palmavera Nuraghe

Nuraghe are a typical Sardinian structure built during the Bronze and Iron age, over 5,000 years ago. These Neolithic defensive settlements can be found dotted all over the island of Sardinia. The Palmavera Nuraghe archeological site is an impressive example of a complex nuraghe, and audioguides explaining the history are available in English.

Local Wine Tours

Alghero is also a great location for wine lovers. Sardinia has its own vibrant wine industry, and Alghero is home to two large wine producers – Sella & Mosca, and Cantina Santa Maria La Palma.

Both have great local wines, and you can visit them for guided tours and wine tastings. If you want to visit the wine cellars, I recommend contacting them to make a booking before you arrive, as they are quite popular.

Hi Katarina, it’s not really necessary to have a car if you’re staying in the town itself so I wouldn’t worry – everything is reached by foot in the centre. If you like beaches, I recommend Mugoni and Le Bombarde – you can reach them on the private beach beach provided by ‘Cattogno’. You can find the info in English by simply Googling their name. I would also recommend taking a tour of the Neptune Caves, and maybe a walk out to Fertilia if you have time.

Located in the north of Alghero towards Porto Conte, after Fertilia. The nuragic complex one of the most important of Sardinia develops a central tower around which the rest of the village takes place.

The nuraghi are part of Sardinian history and these archaeological sites are the true symbol of Sardinia. A visit to the Nuraghe Palmavera is inevitable to know the traditions of this ancient island. In your two days of vacation in Alghero you can not really lose it. Guided tours are available.

#5 – Sunset at Capo Caccia

How to get there :  public transport  – by car

One of the most beautiful and romantic places to watch the sunset is the Capocaccia lookout. A glass of wine, the immensity of the sea and a good company. The whole holiday in Sardinia would be worth just to live this moment.

Reach the belvedere at least half an hour before sunset to find your spot on the ridge. Don’t forget to bring a fresh bottle of vermentino with you!

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to spend three days on the island of Sardinia, a province of Italy and the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Alghero is located on the North-West coast of Sardinia and contains incredible historical remnants of the Catalan-Aragonese conquests in the 16th century.

Alghero quickly became one of my favorite travel destinations. This ancient fishing town has it all–friendly locals, beautiful historical sites, delicious seafood, and scooter-accessible beaches. The colorful streets and seascape make the city a perfect place to relax and explore for three days. Keep reading to learn more about my trip to Alghero, including the camping site I booked, the best local beaches I visited, my favorite sites in Old Town, and my top-picks for local Italian cuisine.

How to Get Around: Rent a Scooter!

Renting a scooter was by far my favorite memory from Sardinia. It was also one of my most reckless decisions I made because 1) my boyfriend and I had never ridden a scooter, 2) we were rejected by two separate rental companies, 3) we may have over-exaggerated our riding experience to the third rental company, and 4) the managers of the scooter company ran after us when they realized two inexperienced riders were accelerating into a busy street.

Although we had a rough start (my heart was pounding as we rode away from the shop and wove around the first few cars), riding the scooter became a breeze. Five minutes later, we were swerving around roundabouts, yelling “lean left” and “lean right,” and going full-throttle down the road to Porto Ferro, a beach 12 miles outside of Alghero. Along the way, we zoomed past vineyards, farms, and vast open fields, swerved around potholes, and waved at passing cars. I remember watching the speedometer approach 70km per hour and leaning my head to the left to watch the sunset saturate the land in a golden-reddish hue. We arrived at Porto Ferro in time to watch the sun disappear into the Mediterranean Sea.

Where I Stayed: Villagio Camping Nurral

The site was hot, dry, and shrubby – pine needles covered the ground next to my white stucco house and the temperature climbed to 98 degrees during the day. Out of all the hostels I crashed in throughout my summer backpacking trip, Villagio Nurral was one of my favorites. The campsite was simple, smack dab in the middle of a forest, and conveniently located to a bus stop. In the morning, I threw on a bikini and relaxed in the sun, and at night I played pool, drank at the main house with the locals, and fell asleep to the sound of crickets chirping and frogs croaking in the brushwood.

Alghero’s Beaches: Three Places to Relax, Tan, and Swim

The photo below was taken after a sleepless night of travel from Frankfurt, Germany to Alghero, Sardinia. Tristan and I landed at 6am and were unable to check into our hostel, Villagio Nurral, until noon. Instead of catching up on sleep at the tiny airport, we decided to call a taxi directly to the beach, one mile away from our hostel. Sweaty and tired, we dumped off our backpacks at the beach and spent hours tanning and swimming.

Three of my favorite beaches were Spiaggia di Maria Pia, Stabilimento Balneare Rosanna, and Porto Ferro Beach. While Spiaggia di Maria Pia and Stabilimento Balneare Rosanna were less than 2 miles from my campsite and easily accessible by the A.F. bus line, Porto Ferro was 12 miles North of Alghero and only accessible by scooter. If you have the chance to visit one of these three beaches, bring some loose cash to purchase a towel or blanket from a local vendor.

The Main Sites in Old Town

Sardinia’s historical center was tiny yet incredibly beautiful. Each narrow cobblestone street featured tiny hanging lanterns, live music, and a few shops and restaurants. Each morning, I took the A.F. line from Fertilia to Alghero to Ospedale Marino to walk by the harbor area and into the Catalan city center. Here, you can spend an hour or two peeking into shops, admiring the Cathedrals, and walking along the Sea Walls that border the ocean.

The main sites I recommend seeing in Alghero’s historical center are the Sea Walls, Campanile, and Forte della Maddalena, Torre di Sulis, and the Torre Porta a Terra. Constructed in the 16th-century, the campanile is Alghero’s most iconic landmark and embodies the beauty of Alghero’s Catalan-Gothic architecture. As for the Northern part of the city, the Forte della Maddalena was one of three forts built at the end of the 16th century to protect the city. Today, the fort is dedicated to Mary Magdalene and is used as a venue for local events and concerts. In the Southern part of the city, the Torre di Sulis was named after Vincenzo Sulis, a 19th-century Sardinian revolutionary who was imprisoned for 22 years within the tower.

A few of Alghero’s most famous churches include the Chiesa di San Francesco, Piazza Civica, Chiesa di San Michele, Cattedrale di Santa Maria. These churches are concentrated in Alghero’s city center and are open to the public during the day or night.

What I Ate : Plenty of Pasta & Gelato

When in Alghero, you cannot pass up on the Italian food – fresh fish and seafood, delicious pasta dishes, and local meats and cheeses. At nearly every restaurant you visit, carta di musica (music paper) is served on the dinner table. A few restaurants I recommend visiting are La Botteghina, Il Pesce d’Oro, and Trattoria Lo Romanì. For dessert, buy a few scoops of gelato from a nearby shop – Alghero Gelateria “Oops!” is a local favorite.

My trip to Alghero, Sardinia was one I’ll always remember. From riding a scooter down the highway at 70km per hour to swimming and tanning at the local beaches, Alghero was one of my all-time favorite destinations. Visit Alghero and the amazing surroundings

Alghero, with a population of 42,000 inhabitants, is the fifth largest city in Sardinia. The town is considered a Catalan linguistic island where the ancient language of its medieval dominators has been preserved for more than six centuries. Nowadays, the variant of the oldest Catalan spoken in Alghero is recognized as a minority language and is receiving protection through teaching programs and official use in the town. The Catalan-Aragonese domination, in addition to influencing the language, is visible in the architectural style of the historic center: from the buildings to the old walls, up to the churches and noble palaces. The old city is divided into three main areas:

Piazza Civica; the one that includes the cathedral of Santa Maria, via Carlo Alberto up to via Cavour; and the oldest between via Gilbert Ferret and via Roma.

Starting your walk from the ancient walls towards the sea you meet the towers and ramparts that will take you to the more recent promenade.

The history of Alghero dates back to six thousand years ago during the Neolithic and continues along the historical phases that involved the whole island.

The nuragic civilization has left traces in the Necropolis of Santu Pedru and Anghelu Ruju, the nuragic villages of Palmavera and Sant’Imbenia.

The Phoenicians, during the ninth century BC, had established one of the most profitable commercial ports right here; this was helped by the conformation of the coast and the presence of resources, especially freshwater streams.

Alghero preserves little evidence of the Roman period, such as the Roman villa of Sant’Imbenia, the sanctuary of the Purissima and the Roman bridge over the Calich pond. The year the city was founded is not historically certain. The clearest event dates back to 1102 by the Genoese Doria family who populated the town with a small group of Ligurians. From 1283 to 1284 it passed under the dominion of the Pisan Republic and then returned to the Genoese family. In 1354, after 4 months of siege, the Aragonese conquered the city inaugurating a dominion of four centuries: this event marks the beginning of the long Catalan history of Alghero.Only in 1720 Sardinia fell to the Savoy dominion.

In the following years many public works were carried out including the remodel of the walls,the development of olive tree cultivation and coral fishing.

Food & wine

Alghero’s food&wine culture combines the Sardinian tradition with the one of the sea. The products of a land warmed by the sun all year round, the meats raised by shepherds and all the fresh delights of the sea. The real protagonist of the table is the lobster, Alghero invented a famous recipe called Catalan :boiled and seasoned with oil, cherry tomatoes and onions!

Alghero is mainly known for its enchanting beaches, but this territory also produces excellent wine and olive oil, with native grapes and olive varieties that characterize the landscape for thousands of kilometers along the coast and surroundings of Alghero.

Some of the well-known producers: Sella & Mosca Estate and Santa Maria La Palma for wines; Accademia Olearia and San Giuliano for the oil of olive production; there are many of family-run wineries and oil mills that offer visits and tastings.

Alghero, a peaceful place of relax

The coast of Alghero is extended for about 90 kilometers between white sandy beaches, small coves that goes up to the promontory of Capo Caccia, surrounded by the typical Mediterranean vegetation. The sea is populated by largest colony of red coral that inspired the name known by the world: Coral Riviera.

In the area of Capo Caccia, Isola Piana and the Gulf of Porto Conte develops the marine protected natural area.The particular geological conformation (karst origin) create an area very rich in caves and ravines, many of them still unexplored.

Another protected site where you should go trekking for some fun adventure is Arca di Noe located in the area of Tramariglio: the beautiful parc became the house of protected birds like the Griffon,Peregrine Falcon, the Cormorant and the Seagull, but also the Partridges , Deers ,the Giara horses and Wild Boars. This large area includes Monte Timidone, Punta Cristallo and the stunning Cala Inferno. Some recommended spots for snorkeling are Cala Dragunara, Punta Giglio, the two caves of the island of Foradada and Porto Conte, the largest natural harbor of the Mediterranean, where it is still possible to see some specimens of Nacchera (Pinna nobilis), protected by years against illegal fishing. For diving lovers one of the best area is called Grotta del Nereo (about 18 meters deep) which offers a wide variety of marine flora and fauna.

Cap d’Any: Alghero celebrates the new year with a program of festivity starting on December 8th with the Immaculate Conception until January with the Epiphany. The “Setmana Santa”, or “Holy Week” takes place before the arrival of Easter: from Holy Tuesday to Sunday the spiritual processions go through the streets of the city illuminated by red lanterns (“farols”), with the presence of religious groups coming from Catalonia and the rest of the island. San Michele: It is a holiday during 6 days dedicated to the Saint Patron of Alghero. Sant Miquel is celebrated with shows, sports, concerts, exhibitions and Food&Wine festival in the historic heart of the center.
