Camaraderie and training are the highlights of the 2024 Riviera Roche Harbor RendezvousFabulous weather, golf, games, dining and a comprehensive line-up of Riviera training have all contributed to make this year’s Roche Harbor Rendezvous in the Pacific Northwest a memorable occasion. Not to mention it was a US record with 55 luxury Riviera motor yachts in attendance and co-hosted by Riviera’s new Canadian dealership, Freedom Marine, alongside Rendezvous stalwarts Emerald Pacific Yachts. A US Riviera Rendezvous record was set in June this year as 55 yachts cruised north and south to meet at the picturesque Roche Harbor for a special Riviera family weekend. I t was a weekend of extraordinary firsts for Riviera owner Rajeev Badyal. The co-inventor of Earth’s low earth orbit internet satellite constellations – also known as Starlink and Project Kuiper and beloved by ocean-crossing navigators – cruised his new Riviera 4600 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition from Seattle 75nm north to the San Juan archipelago for the long weekend in June. “It was a fantastic experience for my wife and I; Roche Harbor is a beautiful place. This was our first time in the ocean with Low Earth Orbiter , it’s our first boat and it was our first trip! It wasn’t overwhelming — it was actually a lot of fun,” says Rajeev. Enjoy the 2024 Riviera Roche Harbor Rendezvous highlights video. “The weekend was extremely well organised and the teams from Emerald Pacific Yachts and Freedom Marine did an outstanding job. The entire event – the dinners, games, sporting events – were very well planned with a good mix of meals and activities. Plus, the weather was absolutely superb. “We really enjoyed the Riviera technical training including the CZone system. The engineer went through a tremendous amount of detail that was very helpful and I’m interested in that sort of stuff,” says the electrical and computer engineer. “We also really enjoyed meeting other Riviera owners and making friends that we’ve kept in touch with since. They’re amazing people and I loved seeing how much pride every Riviera owner takes in their boat. Every Riviera there was spick and span, whether it was 10 years old or brand new — all beautifully maintained. You could sense the pride of ownership. “It was a wonderful experience for us, and my wife and I would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat. It was great to meet other people, listen to their stories, and get to know what they’re doing in their boating life,” says Rajeev. (Click the arrows on the left or right of the image to view the full picture gallery) The entire event, the dinners, games, sporting events, were very well planned with a good mix of meals and fun activities. At the other end of the spectrum, with over a decade of experience aboard seven different Rivieras, were William and Amy Clise on their 585 SUV Elsewhere – a name that perfectly captures their spirit: “Because generally, when we are doing [non-boating] things, we prefer to be elsewhere,” says William. This year William and Amy enjoyed partying with the Canadian contingent and meeting up with the team at Freedom Marine. “The first day we went out and played golf on a 9-hole course with the other Riviera owners, which was a lot of fun,” says William. “It was great to meet some new faces and talk about cruising,” adds Amy. “We brought our kids and they had a great time participating in the games like cornhole. The Canadians brought remote-controlled hydroplanes and we raced them and that was fun too,” she says. This year’s theme was ‘under the sea’. “Though we decided that we like to be on top of the sea!” says Amy. For the pot luck dinner night, Amy dressed her serving dish like a fishpond and designed the shrimp skewers inside to look they were swimming in an aquarium. “I also really enjoyed the sit-down dinner in the main restaurant. It was a little more formal, with dancing afterwards.” (Left) Riviera technical training included CZone, Garmin systems and stabilisation. (Right) There’s a lot of whale watching enjoyed in the San Juan Islands and a presentation on safety around whales was popular. The Riviera family all put their own spin on this year’s theme, which was ‘under the sea’. William particularly enjoyed the informative training sessions on the Saturday morning. “The dealers always do a great job bringing technical people in to discuss the CZone, Garmin systems, gyros or the Humphree stabilisers like we have. It’s always a very good technical morning with Riviera factory representatives. I had a whole lot of questions throughout the weekend, and they were very helpful.” One presentation that captured people’s attention was safe whale watching. “There’s a lot of whale watching in the San Juan Islands and it was a good reminder to be cognisant of our distance and speed around whales. Our home port is Seattle and while the 585 SUV can do 35 knots at the top end, we like to cruise at 22 knots. “The 585 SUV fits our needs perfectly,” continues William. “We generally go out for two months every summer, cruising from Seattle to as far north as Alaska, so the extra room, the seagoing capability, as well as the extra beam of her beefy hull, ensures a comfortable ride on the many 50-mile plus crossings over ocean and inland seas. We also enjoy the stable ride and all the extra storage space in the engine room. It’s the first Riviera 585 SUV on the West Coast and we acquired it only a week before the Rendezvous – I think over the weekend I sold another three or four of them – I’m still waiting for my commission,” he laughs. Delighted to be part of the Riviera family was Denis Barnard, Dealer Partner at Freedom Marine. “We not only love the Riviera brand and its luxury motor yachts, but the passionate owners!” says Denis. “It’s a tight and fun community that we simply had to be a part of. It was great to be able to co-host with Brett, Randy and the EPY team. It was also very cool to see all the owners having fun together on each other’s Rivieras; it didn’t matter if it was a 2004 or 2024 Rivera. Everyone is part of the Riviera family.” 2024 Riviera Roche Harbor Rendezvous social gallery To enjoy the social galley, click on the first image on the top left-hand corner to enlarge the preview and then click the arrow on the centre of the right side to advance through the full gallery. Several noted naval architecture and yacht design firms are involved with Timmerman, including Vripack, Guido de Groot Design, Ginton Naval Architects, Jon Bannenberg Ltd., and Francis Design Ltd. Founded in 2003, the company was named for 17th century Dutch boat builder Franz Timmerman who brought Dutch boat manufacturing techniques to Russia and co-founded the Russian navy. Timmerman Yachts has more than 1,000 employees working at the Moscow Shipyard. Timmerman has delivered a number of semi-custom luxury yachts between 26-47 metres in length, including TM26 and Timmerman FD-51, designed by Francis Design Ltd. Other notable Timmerman yachts include Victoria M, Alexandra (now Latitude) and Olsten 125′. One of the 10 largest yacht builders in the world, Timmerman is focused on building high-quality luxury yachts at more competitive prices. Its Russian-Dutch partnership provides great yacht-building capabilities. Timmerman builds yacht to the highest standards and holds DNV, MCA and Russian River Register certification. The company reportedly has more than a dozen yachts in some phase of construction. Yachts built by TimmermanA waterspout may have sunk a luxury yacht. Could this happen in Australia?ABC Science Topic: Weather Phenomena Waterspouts, like this one seen in the Mediterranean in 2018, usually only last a few minutes. ( Reuters: Alkis Konstantinidis ) On Monday, a sailing yacht off the coast of Italy with 22 people onboard, including British billionaire Mike Lynch, fatally sank . Eyewitness reports suggest a waterspout — a large column of water — might have damaged the yacht that was anchored off Sicily. Fifteen passengers have been rescued, and six have been confirmed dead, with one person still missing. But as rescue efforts continue, an Australian meteorologist says waterspouts, although relatively rare, have damaged property in the past. Here's what we know about the meteorological phenomena, and whether we can get them Down Under What is a waterspout? A waterspout is produced by a spinning column of air. In the water, this phenomenon occurs when cool air passes over warm water, which sucks up water and produces the 'spout' effect. A similar thing can happen when there's cool air over hot ground, called a landspout, which sucks up dirt. While they look similar to tornadoes or cyclones, Rohan Smyth from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says they have some distinct features. "Tornadoes come out of a very significant thunderstorm system, whereas waterspouts don't have to be associated with thunderstorms," Mr Smyth says. "They're quite different." Waterspouts are normally short-lived, lasting only a few minutes before petering out. However, despite their short life span, they can be exceptionally damaging as winds inside the waterspout can exceed 90 kilometres per hour. "Which is what [the BOM] would classify as a damaging wind gust," Mr Smyth says. "I wouldn't want to be nearby if I was in a boat." How common are they? Waterspouts can happen "semi-regularly" according to Mr Smyth, although certain conditions have to occur. "If you've got a cool air mass and a warm air mass coming together at a head, that can create the conditions to get a circulation going," Mr Smyth said. While forecasters can predict conditions that might trigger a water spout, predicting if one will actually occur is "very, very difficult because they are so localised," he adds. In the latest case, heatwaves had occurred in Italy for the last few weeks, and cooler air had just arrived on Sunday night. However, it can't yet be confirmed if it was a waterspout or some other, more common phenomenon that sank the yacht. Italian climatologist Luca Mercalli told Reuters the episode could have been a waterspout or a downburst, which is a similar-looking, more common event where rain is quickly dumped into one specific location. "We don't know which it was because it all happened in the dark in the early hours of the morning, so we have no photographs," he said. Can they happen in Australia? Waterspouts are not just an Italian phenomenon. They are seen off the east coast of Australia during autumn and winter as the air gets colder but the water stays warm. Earlier this year in March, a series of waterspouts were seen near Moreton Island in Queensland . And last year boaties in the Whitsundays captured vision of not one but two waterspouts which formed off Airlie Beach . However, while conditions in the east are more favourable, Mr Smyth says they can potentially occur anywhere along Australia's coast. In May this year a water spout was seen near Dunsborough in south-west Western Australia . Despite this, there are only a few instances of waterspouts damaging boats or other property. A tornado that ripped through Lennox Head on the NSW north coast in 2010, destroying homes and causing injuries, actually began as a waterspout. And in 2019, a waterspout which occurred on the Auckland waterfront in New Zealand toppled a shipping container and damaged a number of yachts. Are they getting more frequent? While it's unusual to get caught in the path of a waterspout, Mr Smyth says it's not yet possible to say if they are becoming more frequent. "The classic scientist answer: it depends," he says. "Because they're so local scale — so small and so short-lived — it's hard to bring that back to the broader global environment of warming." Even tracking them down for research can be difficult. "They're often just metres across and they last a matter of minutes. So unless you get a photo from someone who manages to to catch it, you'll often miss them. "They're very hard to track even on the radar. You might only get a scan or two before they fall over." Science in your inboxThe global authority in superyachting - NEWSLETTERS

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedySeven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are: - British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
- Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
- Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
- Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
- Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
- Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife
It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal. No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crewNo one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly. The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments. "Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistershipThe captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof". David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat". "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable. However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's 74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward. Live updates- During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
- A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
- According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
- One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
- Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
- Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell , stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
- Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
- Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
- At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk. The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.
Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.
