North Pacific 49′ Euro Pilothouse

Strong, stable, stunning, sleek: North Pacific Yachts’ newest pilothouse ticks all the boxes this fall.

The profile of North Pacific’s new 49′ Euro Pilothouse, with its slight forward rake and sturdy fiberglass hull, is the epitome of a classic, strong, stable trawler. A peek inside, however, reveals many elegant touches and luxury amenities give it the feeling of a much larger vessel.

The flybridge, for instance, is spacious enough to entertain guests and store a 12.5’ RIB dinghy on the same deck. Open-air seating at an L-shaped dinette aft of the helm station provides spectacular, 360˚ views, plus a barbecue mount and another bench seat to port. The foredeck can be accessed from both the pilothouse and flybridge and includes a molded-in, cushioned seat with a flip-down backrest.

The interior of the highly customizable pilothouse and full-beam salon features satin-finished ash, wenge, and blackwood paneled walls, dovetailed drawers, and solid hardwood flooring. The settees in the salon are custom made and upholstered with fine leather. A common feature for all potential layouts is the placement of large windows and high, 6’10” ceilings throughout that flood the interior with natural light and panoramic views. Aft to port, the galley includes a convection/microwave oven, a refrigerator/freezer, granite or quartz options for countertops, and a four-burner cooktop, which can be ordered in glass-top, propane, or induction models. There’s also room for an optional dishwasher and trash compactor.

The pilothouse helm features a full set of Garmin electronics, including chart plotters, autopilot, radar, a fish finder, and VHF radios, all controlled from either Stidd or Llebroc helm chairs. A stairway beside the helm leads down to the accommodations, which can be configured in a three-stateroom layout or an option with two staterooms and an office. The master, located either forward or amidships, is full beam with a queen-sized berth, a recessed headboard, spacious windows, an en suite head and shower, and nearly 82” of headroom. The guest staterooms can have either queen-sized berths or bunk beds and have easy access to a shared day head and shower.

The voluminous cockpit covers about 74 square feet, but can be extended by two more feet astern. The area is fully covered by the aft flybridge deck and includes an expandable teak table and cushioned seating along the transom. The cockpit and swim platform are both finished with synthetic Flexiteek decks that resemble real teak but require no maintenance.

All of this is powered by the 49’ Euro’s single 355hp QSB 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine, capable of cruising at 7 to 10 knots. Larger engines are available for higher top speeds, as well as twin engines and get-home-engine options.

North Pacific Making New 49 Euro Pilothouse Cruiser

North Pacific Yachts is building a new, contemporary, Euro-styled 49-foot pilothouse trawler that it expects to launch this fall. It has more windows, more curves, and more interior volume than the company’s traditional 49 pilothouse model.

“With the Euro, we are excited to offer an option that’s fresh and modern, with the highest level of quality that you’d expect on the best traditional trawler,” said Trevor Brice, the company’s president.

The 49 Euro will come with many engine options, offering speeds up to 21 knots. The original 49, which North Pacific still builds, has a single 355-hp Cummins; it cruises from 7 to 10 knots and tops out at 12 knots.

The pilothouse windows in the new 49 Euro are wraparound, and provide a much more modern look than the raked windshield on the traditional 49. The pilothouse still has twin helm chairs, with seating aft that can convert to a pilot berth. Doors open to the deck on both sides.

Below, owners can choose from the original two or three stateroom layouts, or opt for a new midships design for the master stateroom with the guest stateroom forward; both have large windows in the hull sides.

For later in the fall, North Pacific is also making a widebody version of its 44 Sedan, with an additional 18 inches in the salon. That space became available with the elimination of the port side deck. Larger windows in the salon offer more light and visibility all around, and the widebody also has a new integrated fiberglass staircase from the cockpit to the flybridge.

With offices in British Columbia, North Pacific now makes models from 44 to 59 feet. I tested a new North Pacific with Brice many years ago in Vancouver and was impressed by the quality of the build, the craftsmanship, and the comfort of the ride. It was a solid, well-finished, cruising boat.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

A holiday version of 2014’s cocktail darling, the Moscow Mule, this rendition is a nod to Santa’s star reindeer, Rudolph. A splash of grenadine tints the drink red and a crafty reindeer straw with pretzel antlers and a red cherry nose finish the quaff off along with a decked glass rim of holiday sprinkles. This cute cocktail is from my Christmas Eve TV segment on the Today Show (video here).

5 oz. alcohol-free ginger beer 1 ½ oz. vodka Juice from ½ lime 1 tablespoon grenadine

Pour ginger beer into a tall glass over ice cubes and add remaining ingredients. Pop in a Reindeer Straw and give it a stir! To dress up the rim of the glass, mix 2 tablespoons powdered sugar with @3/4 teaspoon of water; it should be thick. Spread on rim of glass then dip in white non-pariels or holiday sprinkles.

To Make the Reindeer Straws:

Maraschino cherries Mini pretzels 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips ½ teaspoon vegetable oil Holiday paper party straws

1. Pick out the most perfectly round Maraschino cherries and drain them on paper towels, while wiping them completely dry; set aside.

2. Turn the mini pretzel upside down. Gently break off the 3 rounded arcs of the pretzel and you’ll have your antlers. It kind of looks like the letter “Y” in a serif font.

3. Add chocolate chips and vegetable oil into a microwave-safe glass measuring cup and melt on defrost setting for 20 second increments until chocolate is slightly lumpy. Stir chocolate as it continues to melt on its own until smooth. Pour half of chocolate into a small bowl and cover remaining chocolate with plastic wrap. Dip pretzel antlers in bowl of chocolate and place on wax paper-lined plate. Put plate in freezer to set chocolate quickly; about 5 minutes. Remove from freezer.

4. Re-melt chocolate in measuring cup if necessary and spoon into a plastic pastry bag fitted with a #2 plain round tip. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper and place a row of chocolate antlers on it.

5. Slide a cherry on to a party straw through the top opening of the cherry. Determine the best side of the cherry for the front of Rudolph’s nose. Carefully pipe a little chocolate into the cherry from the backside; this will keep the cherry from sliding down the straw. Pipe chocolate on the center part of the pretzel. Place the cherry on to the piped chocolate on the antler. Repeat with remaining ingredients and allow to fully set. Keep covered at room temperature until ready to use.
